HD 6870 not working after installing driver

Q: HD 6870 not working after installing driver

Greetings reader

So im using a Radeon HD 6870 in my MSI 890gxm-g65.
Installed the hardware and when I run it on on-board graphics, windows is able to detect it as ATI Radeon HD 6800 Series. But after installing the driver for the 6870 it asks for a restart.
The BIOS screen is visible but after the windows loading screen the display just goes off, the LCD in on but it's just black screen.

I have a lot of work to do, so ill be really grateful if someone is willing to help me.

Thank You
in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently did a clean install of Windows 10 Home.
My computer has:
1. standard built in USB ports (to the motherboard),
2. PCI USB 2 card
3. PCI USB 3 card

For some reason, only the built in USB ports work properly.
The USB3 card works with external drives, but no other hardware (eg .webcam)

The other USB 2 card seems to have a yellow exclamation in the device manager.
- VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
- VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller

The 'device status' under properties says: "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"

I have tried to update the drivers using Driver Boost / Drive Easy and it does not find anything more recent.

(The Enhanced Host Controller is a Intel ICH10 Family)

This is very frustrating as I need these ports - does anyone have any advice in order to resolve this?

I have upgraded to Windows 7 and my old NVIDIA driver (GeForce4 MX 440) doesn't work that well. I am trying to install a newer driver and have read that installing one of the newer NVIDIA ones for WinXP/2000 will be OK. However, it tells me that it cannot recognise the operating system as being Windows.

Hi, I have Windows 7 Home Premium, and whenever I install the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller, my USB 3.0 ports cease to function. I want to have them installed because my OCD tells me, because of the "Unknown Device" in device manager that I'm fairly certain goes away after installing it. I have tried different versions, reinstalling Windows, but to no avail.
My important specs are Intel 4670k, Asus z87i-Pro, crucial 8GB of ram, Asus GTX770, Samsung 840 Evo (boot) and Seagate 1TB (storage).

Hi folks,
I am using a Dell Inspiron 1545 which came with win Vista originally. i upgraded this to windows 7 (64 bit).
after upgrading, i am not able to use WiFi. (LAN is working fine and BT is also working fine after reinstalling BT driver).
I don't see any entry for wireless network hardware in "network adapters" in device manager. i could only see LAN hardware. also, i couldn't see wireless network connection option in "change adapter setting" option.

I installed drivers from dell website but i couldn't install them. e.g. R246753, R228532, R248337.

Could you pls help in this regard whether i am installing wrong drivers OR there is some other problem?

A:Mouse Scroll Wheel stops working after installing Windows 7 Driver

Hello WaterBottle and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have access to another machine you could try plugging your mouse in and see if it works. If it doesn't the mouse might need replacing.

You could also make sure your mouse has the latest driver. (Although these instructions were originally written for Vista they will also work for Windows 7.)

If you would go to device manager>propertie>details tab>drop down menu> hardware id.

Copy and paste the hardware id string for the missing hardware we can look for the drivers.

I'm not completely confident that we'll be able to find 64bit drivers for your netbook though but we can try.

A:My PSU with 6870

On the two 12v rails it only puts out 18A on each and a total of 360WS, this PSU is pretty much the bottom of the food chain.

You should use a PSU calculator, (search on the web) there are several from almost every PSU manufacturer and input your total components and see what is recommended.

The PSU is the most important piece of equipment in the system with under-voltage or over-voltage you can ruin the rest of your components.

If your PSU will work with your components by the calculation you should allow for additional Amps and Watts to the PSU is not under a constant load causing it to run hot and go out before its time.

Now and then, almost daily, the fan of my HD 6870 DirectCU goes nuts and start spinning at full speed (atleast from the sound of it) and sometimes lead into instant shutdown of my PC, but not always. If it doesn't shutdown the PC a little hit on the chassi or touching the fan itself makes it quiet again. A:Dual GPU 6870

Seems to be the season for dual-GPU. I guess you gotta find something to new release between now and 28nm.
ColorFire are already on the board with their self-proclaimed HD 6890. Could throw AMD's naming system out the window (a 6890 having more perf. than a 6950 for example).
Add in Galaxy's intended dual GTX560Ti and EVGA already setting the table with a dual GTX 460, it makes you hope that CFX/SLI drivers have a better track record in the future than the past.

Will be interesting to see how many of these designs come to pass (EVGA excepted of course).

A:6870+6770 vs 6990

Not according to this you won't,

Not only that but the 6870 is a newer GPU, where the 6770 is still the older 5770 just with a couple of new features added to it.

So here's the dealio. I currently have an XFX 6870 and am looking into an upgrade. I've always found x870 cards to be good cards as I have owned a 4870, 5870, and 6870. So naturally I'm looking at the 7870. Given the recent price cuts they seem like they are at a good price/performance ratio. I'm willing to spend up to $239 for a 7870. So my question is should I go for the 7870 at $239 or pick up another 6870 for $100 less and pair it with my current 6870? Which setup would perform better? And is there another option for $239 or less?

Right now I'm leaning toward the 6870 crossfire option as its cheaper and I'm already setup for crossfire as far as power supply, motherboard, etc. go but I would like yalls "professional" opinions first. Thanks ahead of time!

A:Upgrading from the XFX Radeon HD 6870

2x 6870 cards in CF should provide really decent performance across the board, and even if you've got multiple displays. What resolution do you usually play games at?

I just upgraded myself actually... moved from a 1GB 5870 to a 3GB 7970 and the difference is quite staggering. If you have the extra coin I would recommend looking into the 7950, which can be had for around $300 now. Hopefully they drop the price even further as the GTX 660 Ti gains popularity on nvidia's side. The 79xx AMD cards are pretty powerful and provide excellent support for big resolutions.

Get an adapter and plug in the other 6 pin connector. It really doesn't matter what you read or didn't read. If the card has two connectors, both should be plugged in. All 460W power supplies are not created equal. Sometimes an indicator that a power supply is not designed to power such a card is the lack of one of the PCI-E plugs. Your 460W PSU could work but only if you power both connectors on the card.

well i would chalk it up to how the air is flowing through the case and do you have enough fans in postion to make it cooler besides its own fan my hd5770 never got that hot but close

my 6870 is like 10 to 15 degrees cooler than my 5770

I've recently bought a new GPU to my computer, but I (almost) instantly noticed that i didn't play any OpenGl games. (after a little research i found that i had to copy the opengl.dll to .dll in system 32) After that it did launch OpenGl games, but (example minecraft) could not launch accelerated OpenGl mode. (Caused by drivers) well the drivers are the newest one for windows 8, but when I tested it with Mandriva Linux it worked fine.

What resolution do you play at? The 6870 is now a low-mid range card so if you're running at a high resolution you might have to turn down the settings in the more demanding games. It should be fine in MW3 though.

Make sure you download the latest drivers from AMD.

A:Radeon HD 6870 vs HD 6950?

I assume your PSU is the StealthXStream II 500W (there is no OCZ SilentXStream PSU series AFAIK); you should be okay with either card.

I, however, would recommend the GTX 560Ti instead; it trades blows with the HD 6950 and runs cooler. Driver support is also better overall for NVIDIA products, and you may get it cheaper as well.

A:6870 - 6850oc - 460oc

Then I ask myself.. Should I drop 20 dollars from the Video card and get a stronger CPU,
or should I drop 20 dollars from the CPU and get the next upgrade Video card.

What do you guys think would provide the highest constant frames per second

***** Under heavy multiplayer maps with 30 players ******

Should I just stick with the AMD x4 975 - 6870? I guess that would be the safest bet.
But I sure would love to have one of those cards with the two fans (I dont know why X_X, sure seems odd).

Both the x4 975 CPU and 6870 cost 150.
I could drop 20 from the Video card and get a GTX 460oc and add it to the CPU upgrade.
Or the other way around and get a 560 GTX. X_x.

What should I do ?
if I specifically want "highest stable framerate while under Heavy multiplayer specifically" ?
Im sure any of these hardware would do fine under standard gameplay.
Its the larger multiplayer I would like to enjoy also

I've had a problem since day 1 with my 6870 where it will run constantly at around 55% even when the computer is idle. It's pretty damn loud and although I can manually turn it down, that only causes the temps to start rising.

Speedfan reports the card at running around 53/54 degrees C on idle too, which I'm sure isn't a great temp anyway.

I've tried clearing dust away from it, whilst it's been sitting in the computer but as I say, this is a problem I've had ever since I bought it.

Any help is appreciated!

Do not turn the fan speed down. Your specs don't show your case.
Increasing the air flow in the case might help. Try this free test.
Remove the side panel of the case and point a house fan of some kind blowing into the case and watch the temps. If the temp drop down a bunch is a good indication more case air flow is needed.
Also what is the ambient temp.
What are your gaming temp. or load temps?

One more thing. IDK if this information will help, nevertheless, the Sims 2 runs smoothly, only tested through the Sim 2 Create a Sim Demo. When you using the Sims 3 create a Pet Demo, when spinning the animal, it's not as smooth or seamless and sometimes you'll see screen tearing. It's as if the card can't handle the extreme graphics/ai/rendering of the latter game. I'm just really hoping that this new GPU will make a difference. I'm going broke :X

A:single 6970 vs 2 x 6870 XF

so would it be better to buy the single gpu?

As a long time, soon to be former crossfire user, Imo - yes.

The 6xxx series scales better than the previous generations, so it's great when it works.

However there are still quite a few games that are glitchy or flat out don't work with 2 cards. Some of the AMD 'fixes' for this are to disable crossfire at the driver level, or in an CAP profile, which means you'll be limited to the power of a single 6870.

In the long run it's simply less headache to run a single faster card than two slower ones.

I recently won 6850 in a sweepstakes competition and i'm wondering whether i should sell it and get a GTX 580 or buy a 6870 and crossfire the two. I know the nVidia option would be more expensive overall but that's not really an issue...

A:Radeon HD 6850 and 6870 in CrossFireX or GTX 580?

My personal preference where possible is to run one more powerful card than two or more less capable cards in Crossfire or SLI.
If you are the kind of person that tinkers and tweaks a system and are constantly upgrading then the drawbacks of multi-GPU gaming (driver releated bugs mainly) will be more insignificant than the advantages (lower performance/$ costs).

If you plan on Crossfiring with the HD 6850 then I would suggest you pair it with another HD 6850. Crossfiring with a 6870 would tend to bring that cards level down to 6850. Crossfire and SLI rely on on alternate frame rendering (AFR) where each card produces a frame more or less alternately- thus the slowest card tends to dictate the level of performance as well as game IQ you can use.
An alternative is to trade the 6850 against a HD6950 (not such a large price discrepency as the GTX580) with the possibility of adding a second card at a later stage if you feel the need for higher game IQ or framerates.

There are black and white - what I can only describe as 'mosaic' squares - appearing in Photoshop and games, but also other graphical glitches in any software or application (including Catalyst) that has images.

Running on Windows 7 64bit, I've tried both the current driver, 11.10 and also 10.8. I've tried the card on another hard disk running XP and have the same problem.

If you could please take a look at the images and advise. It seems like a hardware issue to me...
Even the 'Select Installation Operation' image on the Catalyst install window is broken.

Yes,those type of artifacts usually indicate a bad video card.

I've got a Sapphire Radeon 6870 that seems to have only one working DVI port, of the two on it. Both sets of cables work, one is brand new. Both monitors work. I can't use the HDMI out as I don't have an extension cable. I've tried using just the one that apparently doesn't work after a restart, nothing. I have no clue what's going on. I have the sapphire TRIXX utility to control fan profile, and AMD overdrive to control clock speeds, as well as the basic drivers for the card.

A:6870 dual monitor fail

Your problem is that you have one monitor that can use DVI (206BW) and one that is VGA only (920Nx), and a video card that only supports VGA/analogue on one of its two DVI ports. You need to figure out which of the two is the one that supports VGA when using the DVI-VGA adapter, and connect the older VGA only monitor to it.

A:HD 6870 1GB vs. HD 6950 1GB - which one is worth the money

Whether they're worth the money is relative to what you are asking of them.

So rather than your question, the one you want to ask is "If I game at this resolution, which one would be more suitable in terms of price?"

Your answer:

Both are worthy if your gaming at 1080p, but the HD6950 is stronger due to being better performing. Seriously, a HD6870 will be fine for gaming at 1920x1080/1200 at high settings. If you have the money spare on top of that get a HD6950.

If your happy to spend the extra money a 2GB HD6950 is the better of the 3.

This E8400 is a beast, been taking 1.5v Vcore for over a year, and is simply rock solid.

I have it at a solid 4.8ghz, and this thing is still AMAZINGLY FAST.

All games run like a breeze. All games.

A:Would my CPU (4.8GHz) bottleneck HD 6870 CrossFire?

... but yeah, it probably would. As impressive as your overclock is (and it is very impressive), 4.8 GHz does not mean 2 X 2.4GHz because of scaling issues. From what I've read you really need a decently clocked (>3 GHz) quad core to fully utilise modern, higher end graphics cards. Still, if all your games really do run like a breeze, you won't really need a better CPU.

To soon for 6000 series cards. You would see better results going with a 5000 card right now. Price is kind of weird too. 5000 cards cost more then 6000 cards for no apparent reason. Still your money is better spent on a 5000 series right now.

The 1GB GTX460 has only just been beaten by the HD6870. However, both of these GPUs represent extremely good performance/price in the midrange price bracket. Either are very good, but the HD6870 is newer, and better (all be it at a 50 (in UK) premium over the GTX460).

I cant choose between this ATI Radeon HD MSI AMD Radeon HD 6870 OC 1024MB GDDR5 | R6870-2PM2D1GD5/OC

and this Nvidia Novatech GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1024MB GDDR5 | NOV-560

A:Which card is a better choice? GTX 560 Ti or Radeon HD 6870

The GTX 560Ti is slightly better performance-wise. Take a look at the below benchmarking site and try to base your purchase on the results you see there. The GTX 560Ti comes in at rank #9 while the Radeon HD 6870 is at #13.

Lastly, I wouldn't go with a Novatech card for two reasons. It's not as reputable a brand as ASUS, EVGA, MSI etc. Also, it only has a single fan. If you're willing to spare the ?20, I would go for the ASUS GeForce GTX 560Ti DCII. The problem with this card however it is overly large and you will find it very difficult to SLI if you want to.

If you're willing to spend an extra ?23 you can get a MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II/OC. This is an excellent card that is factory overclocked higher than both the Novatech and the ASUS card. It also has Twin Frozr II fans which provide great cooling.

Putting the card in a mini-tower PC may be tricky... I have a Mid-Tower case and the hard drive bay is movable, to accommodate the "long" video cards. Get the video cards measurements and apply them to the inside case, where the PCI-e card slots are. Keep in mind that you will need to take up 2 card slots for 1 video card. If the mini-tower case has a standard ATX power supply any good brand (Antec, Corsair) 500 watt or better power supply will work

I have a OCZ 700W ModXStream Pro Power supply and Im thinking of getting a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 or 6950. Will they be compatible? Ive heard people on forums saying they have this rig up and running, but I saw that the cards require 2 PCI-E power connectors. As far as I can see, the PSU has only one PCI-E power connector, but theres a zipper-bag full of extra connectors and stuff that comes with it.

Does anyone know what the crack is?

A:Looking for fix to ATI drivers that cause BSOD with radeon 6870

Found out the problem which is the card being defective. Installed an old 1650 with drivers and works fine with no functional issues. The 6870 displayed slightly noticeable horizontal red lines and when booting the BIOS logo half the screen appeared somewhat pixelated. Doing an RMA since the card is barely a year old, hope this helps anyone else down the line with a similar issue.

Hi, so I've recently purchased a radeon HD6870 card and was considering going for a cross fire setup.

At the moment a second 6870 is outside my budget. Whould it be possible to pop in a 6850 without any issues?

Is crossfire limited to a given manufacturer or can I mix them.......I.e Sapphire + HIS

A:Crossfire compatibility... 6870+6850?

Any manufacturer will work with any other as long as it is the same card. No the 6870 needs another 6870 to crossfire I assume that hybrid crossfire might work but it would be less than stellar. Others would know more on the subject.

First of all hello from a new user, I have a problem with my computer but I need help to nail it down to one part (I think it's the graphics card, but who am I to tell).
A friend of mine said people over here are very nice and competent so why not try to get help here.

Long story short, I played a game, Velvet Assassin, that is rather buggy (I.e. it didn't let me change the resolution to my native 1680x1050).
After some time the screen started flickering in complete white with some color bars here and there. I thought it was another bug on newer systems and changed the resolution; the problem seemed resolved.

Until my little brother started to play Forge of Empires, that little browser game, where the problem again occured at an even faster rate.

I hope you can help me, I made a short video of the issue, I know it's not of best quality, but maybe it helps.
Thank you in advance

A:AMD Radeon 6870 HD Temperature and noise problems

It is normal for a graphics card to get rather hot but 85-90 celsius and past is when you need to start worrying in my experience. Usually auto fan speeds are best but without hearing the fan I can only assume, when you say the fan is making annoying noises, that the fan is going bad.

Your card is not so old that its not worth saving. I'd recommend reading this over and if it doesn't apply there may still be options.

I have connected the computer to my full hd monitor via hdmi and Windows recognizes it as full hd, although the screen seems to be scaled down. There are black lines around the edge of the picture.

It like watching a movie filmed in 4:3 on a 16:9 tv although all the way around.

Is there any reason it could be doing this?

3. Corsair Vengeance DDR3 4 GB (1 x 4 GB) PC RAM (CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9)
4. some 500 watts psu
5. existing seagate 500 gb harddisk

Any of the cards you listed will be faster than two 5670's in Crossfire, with the 6870 being the fastest and the 7770 the slowest (but not by much behind the 6850).

The listed components look good, but there is one troubling bit,

As long as it is a good quality 500W it should be OK. If it is some no name, then I wouldn't trust it at all.

displays such as a movie on the TV while I surf the net. Is this possible? I have my monitor hooked up via DVI. Is what I want possible using the setup I currently have or can someone direct me somewhere? Thanks

A:Running monitor and tv from AMD 6870 concurrently displaying different

Mine does the same thing when I use my TV, it sets the TV as primary and the monitor as secondary. Not a problem as more of an annoyance, and no idea why it does it. Think it is a hardware level kind of thing, as it comes up the same on a reboot.

Now with that said it is an easy work around. First is to use Windows own display settings instead of CCC to set primary and secondary. Right click on the desktop and select "Screen resolution", click on the one that is your monitor (likely #2) and set it as the primary. That will force Windows to use the monitor instead of the TV as the primary display. Also make sure that it is set to extended mode and not duplicate/clone mode.

Now if you do like I do and only use the TV occasionally, from the "Multiple displays" dropdown set it to "show desktop only on 2". Then reverse the process when you want to use both.

Hi all, I am building a new computer and have already got the Case, Motherboard, Hard Drive, DVD writer, CPU cooler, Neons and i am waiting on the RAM.

Next i plan to buy the Power Supply. But i am stuck on which one to buy. The Corsair HX650 or the HX750. I plan to overclock this new system as high as i possibly can.

The final specs will be:

AMD Phenom II x4 955 CPU
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H Motherboard
4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 RAM
1TB Samsung SpinPoint F3 HDD
2x HIS Radeon HD 6870 video cards
NZXT M59 Case

2 sets of cold cathodes are going into this system. 2 red ones and 2 blue ones.

So will the HX650 power this system fine. Or will i be better off getting the HX750, which is only $60NZ more then the 650.

Cheers, Nathan.

A:Corsair HX650 or HX750? Radeon 6870 CrossFire

The HX650w will suffice for that setup. Here is a little reading on the subject. This ais a an OC'd i7 956 BTW

The HX650 has 52A on the 12v rail and is more than capable for a CF 6870's the 750w would provide headroom for upgrades, however the 6870 can only go 2x CF.

When having stability problems the first thing you want to do is not OC, don't start OC until you have the system running stabile.
Check you ram timings in BIOs and make sure they are correct.
Try bumping up you ram voltage and see if that helps.
Try upping your graphic card voltage a little.

Sounds pretty much like a graphics issue, either the drivers are causing havoc on the system or, since you used it in safe mode and the same issue occurred, the GPU has some problems; probably overheating.

Have you tried peeking into the case, maybe cleaning some stuff inside, especially the graphics card?

A:AMD Radeon HD 6870 And 6850: Is Barts A Step Forward?

Just finished reading a great review on the VisionTek 6870 and it is impressive. This new series of cards from AMD look like great gaming cards and in the 250.00 range.

I was closing my cd tray and the headphone wire got caught and hung it up. I pulled the cord to the side and the tray closed by itself. I put in a cd that I had burned from my old computer with music, pictures and docs. It didn't play and checking the device manager it says that " Windows cannot initalize the device driver for this hardware. Code 37 "

So, not seeing how a cord could cause driver issues, I'm guessing I had a bug on the cd. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the cd rom but that didn't work.

Any sugesstions?

hey guys, i need a hand with my monitoring.

i have just installed a radeon 6870 (which supports 6 monitors. it has 2 hdmi outs, 1 dvi out and 2 mini dvi outs. i want to set up 2 monitors. i currently have 2 hdmi cables going to my lcds, but windows 7 will only register the main monitor. in the display settings there is no second monitor and no option to extend the dekstop across the 2 monitors. the 2nd lcd is showing no signal even though it it plugged in correctly.

any ideas? also i was thinking of getting dvi cables as the images are sharper, but would i have the same problem using the mini dvi outs?

any help is appreciated.

Hello, Welcome to seve nforums
Does the 2nd monitor show up in device manager?

Right click my computer
click manager
click device manager
Expand Monitors

May just need to update your drivers for ur 6870, Although they should be up to date enough to display 2 monitors by default drivers from Win Update.

I am looking for something to run 2x DVI and HDMI TV all at the same time. Can 6870 do that? I currently have HD5570 and it can only do 2 monitors at a time.

Also is $80 decent for a **USED** 6870 or is there something better that I should be looking at for $80 to run 3 displays?

If there is something better, I would like to make sure there IS a fan. Not interested in fanless.

(EDIT: Seems theres a couple different versions of the 6870, this is the version I am looking at Radeon HD 6870 Video Card | system components | St. Catharines | Kijiji)

A:Is Radeon HD 6870 Video Card compatible w/ ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo MB?

As long as you have a PCI-E x16 Slot in that motherboard (In which case it does), then it will work.

I am not sure what happened I did a format and fresh install of Windows x I have a ATI RADEON HD GB card No problems with this card before the format and re install Average Idle temps were around c my fan pushed around - just sitting MOBO is an M A Fresh runs and HD Radeon 6870 hotter louder install OS, TD EVO asus After reinstalling my device drivers and MOBO drivers the average idle temp of my Vid Card is c when playing mild games such as an MMORPG with low end specs my temp bumps up to c- c adn the fan pushed at much louder Fresh install OS, Radeon HD 6870 runs louder and hotter havent tested it on a more demanding game yet I emailed XFX and the response I received was that they are designed to run in the mid 's and attain high 's under full load I'm nearly smelling some BS tech answer since Mine spent months running at c idle and never even got over c and now its pushing much higher at minimal usage I do Fresh install OS, Radeon HD 6870 runs louder and hotter not remember ever having a power saving MOBO software installed so I am not thinking that would be a contributing factor I am more irked by the sudden increase in noise and heat and would rather a Vid card behave like it had Ideas

What driver version did you have before the fresh install? What driver version do you have now? Is it overclocked at all...either manually or automatically?

Ok ive recently bought a 6870 and randomly (not all the time) the second i load a youtube video with hardware acceleration enabled in flash the screen goes (blue) sometimes black however the fans and the rest of the pc appear to be running.

I have run some tests with an auto refresh addon on the youtube videos and its deffinetly hardware accelration thats causing the issue.

The card works perfectly with all games and everything else it just seems to be flash related..

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
