USB 2.0 Ports working as regular USB ports

Q: USB 2.0 Ports working as regular USB ports

Hey guys, brand new kid here. Fairly computer literate but not a whiz by any means. I had to do a Windows XP System Recovery on my HP desktop PC a few weeks ago and since then my USB 2.0 ports haven't been themselves.

Before when I used my Kingston 4gb SDHC card in my front USB 2.0 ports (as they're labeled) it worked at full speed with no problems. After the System Recovery, when I plug in the card it gives me a message saying "This device could perform faster if it were plugged into a High Speed USB 2.0 Port." The problem is, my Device Manager lists a high speed port and hub on my computer, but I get the same message on all the ports on my computer. I tried updating the drivers and uninstalling and reinstalling them but to no avail.

Is there any way to fix this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I tried switching between all 3 internal headers and none of them would detect the flash drive.

If I plug the drive in the rear ports it detects right away leading me to suspect the case's ports might be defective but I don't have another USB 2.0 card lying around to confirm.

Based on this info does it seem likely that the front ports themselves are faulty?

A:Front USB ports not working, but rear USB ports work…

You might check to see if the case end of the USB cables are properly plugged into the front panel holding the headers. Some board need more than one brand of USB drivers, Renesas, NEC, etc.

Hey all so I have forwarded some ports on my router with Airport Utility NAT port forwarding but using cmd netstat -n the ports I forwarded aren't listed and using online port checkers confirms they are closed I added exceptions to my firewall even though it is off and windows defender is off and Avast's shields are all off I honestly have no idea how to open the ports up and haven't found a way to do this using Windows not pro Anybody have any ideas It seems like Windows is blocking these ports from opening for some reason There doesn't seem to be an override function in cmd to open them either In case forwarded disabled? router Ports firewalls closed; ports, you're wondering why I need the ports open I'm trying to resolve a quot request timeout quot error when pinging somebody on Hamachi - so I'm trying to open the main ports Hamachi uses I just want to play Terraria man Any Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled? help would be greatly appreciated

A:Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled?

Temporarily add your PC IP into the DMZ and try again , see if the internal/external tests then notice the ports open , this will test if it's a router or PC issue....

Don't forget to take it out of the DMZ after testing...

My modem-router is in bridged mode (everything is disabled except internet), i have disabled windows firewall i have taken my firewall offline (until this issue is resolved) but still no one can access my server (they can't even join a game if i create a server)

if i go to port checker it says connection refused on all ports except port 80? how do i force open the ports?

i called my ISP and they say they should be open and there not blocking any ports.

I have a static ip address, 24Mbit up 2.5Mbit down.

when i run my filesharing program (for sharing files between my and my clients) and they try to download a file from me it says it will take (99years, 99days, 99 hours) now i don't really have that long to wait

edit: and yes my network properties are configured manually (and not on auto detect) i have no problem accessing the internet myself

A:Opening ports, i have the firewall disabled but ports are still blocked

It would be better to open the ports in the running firewall than to turn it off. Firewalls load drivers, running or not. Many firewalls block everything by default when they are turned off so that the machine is protected during boot.

You may need to uninstall some firewalls to get them to open all ports.

I recently installed a new hard drive and re-installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (FYI this is a retail version) on my laptop.

Now it seems that two out of the three USB ports on my computer aren't working. The ones next to the CD drive are unresponsive. The lone USB port on the other side of the computer works fine.

I've tried looking at the device manager but the USB drivers seem to be working fine, I didn't see any errors.

The only drivers that show up in device manger as not being installed are, PCI Simple Communications Controller, Fingerprint Sensor, Ethernet Controller, and Unknown Device.

The computer came integrated with a webcam so that may be the unknown device showing up in the device manager.
The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra A11-S3530 running Windows 7 64bit Home Premium

So I have 3 USB ports. My mouse occupies one of them. I'll use another one to charge my phone. One USB port is vacant, but I couldnt use it if I wanted to because it has completely stopped working, I think this is a fixable issue however.

So I have the two working USB ports. But if I have my mouse and phone charger both plugged in, one port will usually stop working, or both will decide not to work. Therefore I have to only utilize one usb port at a time.

This was a n issue that started happening every now and then, and now is happening all the time. It must be something in my settings, right? What is the fix here? Drivers are up to date according to my system.

Try to remove them in Device Manager and restart.
Are they running at 500mA or less?
Check the disk that came with the motherboard.
There may be driver updates or some other type of update on it.
Or try for the update.

Is it the front, back, or all USB ports?

Windows XP. None of my USB ports are working. When I plug in my external hard drives, they light up, so I don't think it is a problem with them. The USB will not read any type device that I try to plug into it. I went into computer management --> device manager-->expanded USB controllers and then uninstalled my USB controllers. After that I restarted my computer, and the system re-installed all of the drivers, so I thought my problem might be solved. It was not. Even after that, none of them work. I am not really sure what else to do, my brother in law told me about this website and said he has had nothing but good luck with you guys. Any help/suggestion would be appreciated.

Thank You,

A:USB Ports not working

Is this a laptop or a desktop? Without knowing I can tell you I've seen people with this problem at my work and I've not been able to fix it completely over the phone once. One time a lady's USB ports in the back worked after re-installing the drivers. This is because the ones in the back are directly connected to the motherboard while the ones in the front usually run from an add-in card (which also decreases speed over those ports) So if I had your problems here's what I would do:
Backup important files. This can be done using cds, or you can get a free 90 day trial of an online service at which doesn't require a credit card.

Then do a factory reset. If your computer came with disks, that's what you use, most nowdays have a section of the hard drive that they put the factory info on that you can restore from. All HPs and some dells and some acers (maybe more I'mnot aware of) allow you to make your own discs, which is the option I recommend.

If you do that and it's just a software problem, it will fix it. If you do that and it doesn't fix it, then it's a hardware problem and you need to have the computer serviced. That's personally what I would do, maybe someone else knows an easier way?

Hi. So a while ago, 2 out of 3 USB ports on my Notebook stopped working. There are 2 USB ports on the left and one on the right. The one on the right is the only one that still works. I decided to run a HP diagnostics test on the USB ports that are not working and i got the error code Q4XBL1-78J89Q-MFPV6J-8D7KO3. I ran the test on both of the ports and both came up with the same code. Can someone please tell me what this code means, and what to do about the problem? Help would be much appreciated.

A:USB Ports Not Working

Need the full model number but likely the two ports gone bad are on a daughterboard that plugs into the motherboard with a cable and the good port is directly on the motherboard. The usb port module can be purchased separately and replaced fairly easily (or if under warranty HP will do it).  But I need the model number to check the Manual and be sure this is correct for your laptop.

My desktop was originally windows 8 and I had no problems then the update to 8.1 downloaded automatically and the problems started. Just before the cut of date I upgraded to windows 10.
My desktop has 2 USB 3 ports and 5 USB 2 ports. After the 8.1 update both USB 3 ports and 4 USB 2 ports stopped working but sometimes 1 of the USB 3 ports works for a short period of time.
I recently updated all my drivers and a pop up message appeared saying that there was a power surge to my USB ports and my pc does not recognise them.
Has any forum member had the same problem if so how did you resolve? or does any member know how to solve this issue as I cannot connect my printer, card reader external back-up HDD and other periferals that I use.

How were you uninstalling drivers? If you were doing it any way outside of the Device Manager then there is a good chance you were doing it wrong. Just delete your USB root hubs from device manager and reboot. Windows should autodetect and install the drivers for them automatically.

Have a desktop Acer Aspire model M and running windows Power supplied is watts Upon boot got a black screen message saying quot warning keyboard not found quot In addition a BSOD message indicated that the quot usb drivers were not found quot Prior to these messages the computer was fine except the usb ports in rear in front sometimes worked and other times not When they didn t work I would restart the computer If that didn t work I would go into the device manager and check to see any yellow highlighted next to a driver etc If I didn t find any I would shut down computer then unplug power source and open the case I would check if anything looked peculiar USB working not ports such USB ports not working as a loose usb hub or connector then look inside the usb ports if any of the pins looked loose or mis-aligned What I found was the following One usb port behind the computer had two pins that were shorter than the other two Because of this my theory was that there wasn t a good connection between the usb cable for the keyboard and that usb port For the usb port in the front of the computer the same USB ports not working problem was visible like the rear usb port but this port was for the usb cable for the mouse What I did for both usb ports was use a fine twizzer tool to pull the pins forward and after doing so those pins were aligned with the other two pins that weren t mis-aligned My other curiosity was why the other three usb ports behind the computer weren t working after testing them with both the keyboard and mouse usb cables These ports looked fine unlike the other two with the pin issue Finally I put the computer case USB ports not working back into place and plugged in the usb cables from the keyboard mouse audio speakers printer and wifi adapter Plugged in the power cord into the power outlet on the wall and turned on the computer Miraculously I didn t get any of the previous error messages upon boot and I saw that both the keyboard and mouse were getting power from the usb ports they were connected to Then the computer loaded the windows desktop and voila things seemed to run normally as before this problem occurred Should this problem present itself again is there anything I could do different For now I won t fix anything if it ain t broken but do you think my usb hubs are going bad or something else My other question as a beginner novice on hardware issues is this Can a usb hub attached to the motherboard be replaced without having to replace the entire motherboard It seems as though if a hard drive or graphics card go bad they can be replaced without replacing the entire motherboard in some cases Thank you for reading and I look forward to any replies with much appreciation nbsp

Perhaps a silly question, but you have double checked that all the drivers have been installed correctly on the drive that isn't operating them correctly?

If they work fine with another drive and fresh install that would lead me to believe there is a driver / software problem on the faulty installation.

I have an Ei 204-UK pc, when I bought the pc everything worked fine. Recently my computer broke and I've had to get Windows XP reinstalled, and now none of the USB 2.0 ports are working. I've searched around and it tells you to go into the device manager and delete all of the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, but there are none showing.

Can anyone help?

A:USB ports are not working.

You post that you reinstalled windows; did you install your chipset drivers?

As a general rule, you install in this order;
1 Install os
2 Update to latest service pack. For xp sp3
3 Install chipset/mb drivers
4 Install sound, nic, drivers as necessary
5 Install video driver

Now make an image of the system as a clean install. If you ever need to reinstall again, it takes all of 5~10min to restore the image.

Now do windows update and install ALL critical updates.

All my usb ports stopped working. I reinstalled the drivers and the system says they are 'working fine' yet they aren't. Updated bios, reinstalled root hubs, no change. I have a ASUS p4p800 mboard running win xp home. ASUS dude said to reinstall OS but I can't without wiping the drive. Any thoughts?

A:USB ports not working

I suggest you do as the Asus guy said. Backup your important data and reformat and reinstall the OS. If that doesn`t help, It`s probably the mobo that`s faulty.

When a USB device such as a flash drive is plugged in, the computer does not react at all. It does not find the device nor does it show (not even as unknown) in the device list. However when I boot the computer with the device plugged in, it works fine.

IThis may be related. I have an 'Unknown Device' that periodically pops up and then disappears. I've tried many software programs & checks but nothing can identify it. I have the latest Intel chipset drivers installed and my drivers through DriverMax are up-to-date.

I would appreciate any help.

A:USB ports not working

I you have not already done this, go into the BIOS (integrated peripherals) and find all USB controllers....anything that says USB on it and make sure it's enabled. For some reason, I have seen BIOSs that have certain USB function disabled be default. One was disabled on a Gigabyte board I got a few months ago. There must be some reason they have, but I would just make sure. It may be something simple like this. Hope this helps.

Two of the USB ports intermittely do not work.
Could that be caused by too many peripheral connected to it. (six)
In one of the useable port I use a four port USB dongle to compensate for the lack of ports, but even that one does not always work.
The mother board is a nettle3 MCP61PM-HM.

Hopefully one of the hardware aficionados will chime in. But this may be of interest:
Five Best USB Hubs

I would go with externally powered solutions. One thing you can try that shouldn't hurt anything is boot into safe mode and uninstall the usb stuff in Device Manager. On reboot Windows will reinstall the same drivers. This often fixes stuff that works but does not work correctly.

But I suspect you are sharing the internal power across too many ports.

Good Day All,
Unfortunately for me, I was one of those that succumbed to the dark-side and purchased an Emachine. Now I know that Emachine has a bad rep, especially when it comes to the power supply. I have had my Emachine for 4 years now, and the power supply finally gave out. As far as I was concerned, not a problem. I replaced the power supply, it booted up the OS just fine. With one small exception, my USB ports will not work anymore. I have updated the drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled. Still they wont work. So i figured I would come ask the experts, before going out and purchasing PCI Slot USB Cards. Is there something I missed, something I did not connect when installing the new power supply, besides the dumb mistake of buying the Emachine is there any other dumb mistake I may have done??????? Thanks in advance for any help on this ppl.

Hi. .

USB is Plug-N-Play meaning that Vista will find the drivers for you automatically, unless you have installed software for that specific USB device.

Perform a system Restore using a restore point prior to the loss of the USB.

Then check these areas:

? The Device Manager
START | type dev man into the Start Search box | right-click on Deice Manager that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | look for any red/yellow flags - pay specific attention to the USB area.

? Problem Reports and Solutions -
START | type wercon.exe into the Start Search box | right-click on wercon.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view "See Problems to Check".

? The Event Viewer -
START | type eventvwr into the Start Search box | right-click on eventvwr.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view the various logs starting with the Administrative logs.

? Reliability and Performance Moniter -
START | type perfmon into the Start Search box | right-click on perfmon that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view both the Performance Moniter and the Reliability Moniter.

Regards. . .

I have control before Windows loads (in Bios Settings).

I can not system restore. I have no control in safe mode.

Basically if it deals with windows, i have no control. Only before windows loads.

Go into the Bios and see if there is any settings for USB, make sure it is enabled. If this is a desktop computer and it has PS2 ports use a PS2 keyboard and mouse until you get the drivers installed.

I don't know if this will help; but, I saved it in my notes:

From JohnWill at, Dec 5, 2006 in reply to user whose USB ports seem to have quit working.

Click Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEYSTEMurrentControlSetontrolession Managernvironment]

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

I do know that one of the ports in the front has some damage to it but I'm not sure if that would cause them all to suddenly not work? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

A:USP Ports are NOT working

Hi Tammy and welcome to TSF

When you boot, does the lights on the keyboard blink? Wondering if it is a problem all the time or just after Windows boots.

You need to try a PS/2 mouse and keyboard. See if you can borrow them if you don't have them. There is an adapter to interface USB to PS/2 that will work on a mouse, but I'm not sure if it would work on the keyboard. If you at least had a mouse, you could use the On-Screen Keyboard to check out the USB drivers, etc.

It might be the damaged USB port on the front of your computer. The USB connectors at the front are plugged onto the mother board. If you are confortable about going into your computer, you could unplug the front ports from the motherboard. If the problem is a damaged front port, that might clear it. If you decide to go inside your computer, be sure to unplug the computer before you start and touch the bare metal of the case before touching anything inside the computer. Discharge any static electricity from yourself.

Let us know how it goes.

My first thoughts are wondering if you have installed all the drivers for your laptop? Windows Update does not always find up to date drivers concerning your model of laptop.
For the drivers, click here and enter your model.
The most important drivers are the ones in the category AHCI, AMT and Chipset.

I recently downgraded my HP 15-r209ni Notebook from Windows 8 to Windows 7. Only Windows 8 drivers are listed under the support page, but they all seemed to install and work just fine. The only problem is that my USB  ports don't work after Windows loads up. There aren't any drivers under the support page and Windows Update can't find them, nor can several driver update programs - It's just listed as an unknown Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller under the Device Manager.  Any idea where I might be able to get those drivers?

Hi All

Hopefully just a quick problem...

I was engaged in some heated chat with a girl i met in the Yahoo! chat rooms when before i knew it we were sparking up the Web Cam's(haw haw haw)... now my only problem is... i recently upgraded my computer to this.

Asus A8V Deluxe MB with USB 2.0
Athlon 64 3200+

Now ive never had a problem like this before, and as far as i can see all the USB controllers are there and appear to be software active, i checked BIOS and all seem correct, although to my only semi-triained eye.

Now my computer was formatted so i had only just tried to re-install the web cam when i realised, and as far as i can see its not even getting power.

Any Ideas guys/gals ??

Hello guys,

I have just got my motherboard replaced by a PC World Techguy and I got it back last week. Because the BIOS on the new motherboard has not be altered to the same has the old one. The front 2 usb ports are not being recongized, but the one that my usb hub is plugged into is working OK. Am I missing a setting in Bios or something?

A:Not all USB ports are working

Mate, I think you just got a bad MoBo....

Using xp sp1. Device manager says the ports are enabled and working but they definately aren't.
They were working last week. Removed some viruses from my system today. Could that be the problem?
These ports are hardwired to the motherboard however when we attached an external usb device it wasn't recognized either.
I totally confused, please help.
If you need more info let me know. I've been working at this for hours now and my head hurts.

Today I wake up to find no internet so I start the usual unplugging the modem and so on. I then realize the wireless devices are working and the devices with the ethernet cable are not. The ports are amber lights with some blinking.
I have a Zoom 5350 cable modem/router.
What could cause this?

A:LAN ports not working

"Working" and "not working" doesn't really help here. Troubleshooting network problems go beyond yes/no troubleshooting steps.

Can you provide some diagnostic data?

Can you ping the default gateway?
Are you getting a DHCP address?
Is this a DNS resolution issue?

A:USB PORTS are not working

This may be a faulty motherboard. Best and cheapest solution is to fit a card with USB ports on it.

I have tried many different usb sticks and external hard drives that just dont seem to work with my computer. once i connect the device it loads up fine. the problem begins when i transfer data from my cpu to the usb storage. the transfer stops and i usually get an error balloon pop up in the bottom right corner saying that my usb device has malfunctioned and the connect usb device from my computer dissappears. my devices are fine since they work fine on my other computers and transfer files with no problem. So im assuming the problem is the usb ports of this computer. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers of usb ports from device manager but didnt help. any suggestions? oh and i have a Acer Aspire x1700.

A:USB ports not working

The next things I'd try are:

1. "Disable" then "Enable" the USB Devices in Device Manager (different than uninstall and install)

2. Clean out all the ports with canned air

3. Open PC (I assume no responsibility if you damage your system or void your warranty) case and check that all associated wires and plugs are secure (I'd disconnect the connectors and blast them out with air, too).

4. While the PC is open, check to see if all of your usb ports are on the same card/slot (if they are, and none are working, then I'd suspect hardware; if you have ports on different cards that aren't working, I'd lean more toward software/driver issues).

I hope this helps a little! Good luck!

Open a command prompt and see if you can ping yahoo (ping see if you get any replies. I would run a virus scan and make sure the popup did not give you malware. If so, follow the 5 steps in my sig.

My Laptop is refusing to recognise devices plugged into the USB ports although it has done so in the past My Kindle and Flash Drive both listed under Other Devices on the Device Manager both have the yellow troubleshooting triangles alongside them and are insisting that their are no installed if they were ever needed drivers again even though they working not usb ports must obviously must have been for them to work just this morning The PC obviously knows the devices are attached but is refusing to work with them When I try to Update the Drivers the PC insists that they do not exist And yes I have tried running a System Restore times to no effect It cannot be the Removable Disk or the Kindle since the work when usb ports not working plugged into my ancient Desk Top PC And for some reason my Wireless Mouse which operates out of a USB plug in and yes I have tried usb ports not working the one to which it is normally attached still works so the failure to recognise other devices is particularly puzzling

Last night I was transferring some files from my laptop to my external Working Not Ports USB hard drive and everything was working fine but then a couple hours later I went to plug in some rechargeable USB batteries that I have and noticed that they weren't lighting up I then tried plugging in several of my other USB devices but none of them were connecting either Also I was transferring the USB Ports Not Working files between my Xbox and updating my Ipod at the same time so I was connecting and disconnecting a lot of times over that short period of time and I'm not sure if that might be an issues I've tried several other solutions after Googling the issue but none of them have worked so far Here's a brief summary of what I've tried - Restarting the computer However I did notice that if I plug in the batteries after restarting the computer they do light up for a split second and then instantly fade away - Turning off the computer and disconnecting all power sources and re-starting - Checking device manager and checking for driver updates and re-installing the USB controllers It said that they were up to date and there are no exclamation points beside any of the controllers - Running the sfc scannow tool I USB Ports Not Working didn't find any integrity violations - Doing a system restore back to a couple days ago when they were working fine - I ran a full virus scan USB Ports Not Working with Microsoft security essentials and it didn't find anything - The only thing that has even remotely given an inclination of an error is this fix it tool I downloaded from microsoft support and it says quot Hardware changes might not have been detected Windows Update configured to never install drivers quot and quot Change Windows Update settings - Not Run quot but when I check my device installation settings the automatic update option is ticked and when I manually check for updates it says they are up to date So maybe I do have a virus or malware I'm just not sure Thanks in advance for any help you can give me

Hello Kutter mate the batteries you haven't mentioned the size they are and I am if you have put a bit too much strain on the USB ports to deliver.

I just bought a new Kingston Ultimate 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive. It works fine in my 2.0 ports but will only light up in the 3.0 ports and Windows 7 64 bit does not see it. I have enabled the USB 3.0 ports in my BIOS and I have got the latest NEC USB 3.0 driver for my MSI P55-GD85 motherboard. The driver does not install correctly and in Device Manger under Storage Controllers I get ACS-6XXX pop up with a yellow caution flag when I do install it. I have tried other drivers as well, but no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:USB 3.0 Ports Not Working

All right my ASUS board did the same thing.

The ACS-6xxx will have to be hidden in Windows Updates. Otherwise it willl continue to install it messing up the right driver.

Give me a couple of minutes.

This is drawn out but necessary. Go to Start> Control panel> Windows Update.
Then as in left picture click Change settings.
Then as in right picture change the drop down curtain to read as mine does. This will keep the ACS-6xxx from reinstalling after we get rid of it.

By the way you have no ACS brand hardware on your motherboard but neither do I.

That is step one.
Step 2 to come- deleting the ACS-6xxx drivers unless you already know how to do that.

Go into Device manager find all the yellow caution ACS-6xxx right click on each ACS-6xxx individually and left click delete. Rid yourself of each one individually.

Then go to MSI and get the drivers for your board. I think this is the right mother board below but double check.
NEC USB3.0 Drivers Ver: should be the right one.

I recently added a 512mb stick of RAM to a computer running XP. Immediately following, (perhaps by coincidence) none of the devices plugged into the USB ports are recognized. I tried two different devices, an HP Photosmart printer and a flash drive into multiple USB ports and none of them were recognized.

The new stick of RAM is posting, so I know the addition of the RAM may not necessarily be the problem. I have the most current drivers installed for the printer, so I know this is not the issue.

I read on another forum
where a user reported having exactly the same problem while they were running Vista. The solution was to delete said corrupted USB files, reinstall the RAM and then plug the devices back in...

Does anyone have any insight into how to do this?

A:USB Ports Not Working/New RAM the Cause?

I agree the ram most likely did not cause the problem.

Check device mgr for any yellow marks. If everything looks normal, you can try this reg fix for usb problems. Note make a restore point before you begin this task. The following is a fix posted by John Will [another mod]

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
