Speed Issue W/ New Hard Drive

Q: Speed Issue W/ New Hard Drive

So originally I was using a Rosewill USB HDD Dock with my WD HD103SI 1 TB Hard Drive. Everything went great, but eventually filled that up. I bought a new WD HD103SJ 1 TB Hard Drive, formatted it as NTFS, but the speeds are horrible. Transfer rates say around 2.0 mb/s give or take .5 mb/s, so it takes around an hour to transfer a 4 GB file to the hard drive, whereas it took 4 minutes on my other one. I didn't change any settings, I just plopped a new hard drive into the same HDD dock, but the speeds I am getting on that hard drive are poor. I also noticed that the file text on the hard drive is in blue? not sure why that is...

Preferred Solution: Speed Issue W/ New Hard Drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello welcome to TSG forum.

I have just googled the part number you have included in your post "WD HD103SJ" and it comes up with a samsung spinpoint not a Western Digital (WD) like you stated. Is this correct?

Hello everyone,

This is an issue mainly with my hard-drive and not Windows 8. I attached an image to help resolve this problem. Whenever the 'Data transfer rate' reaches 100% I get huge performance issues. This happens whenever I deal with a few running programs that are accessing and writing data.

The speed transfer of this HD is about 3Gbits I think and is interfaced with SATA. Does this mean I have to buy a new HD with larger transfer rate or am I missing something?

I used to run Windows 7 but switched to 8 and with the new task manager I 'managed' to notice the performance with my HD.

I am going to be buying a new computer in the near future and was wondering if backups, file copying, and defragging will speed up very much?

It seems like that at some point, the drives would not be able to keep up with the processor and faster processors would not be needed for many or even most applications.

I am using a 1 ghz Pentium 3 computer now and am going to get a new 3 ghz computer next.

Also, recently, I read an article about the new dual core Intel chips and that sounds like something that I would like but do not know if they are out yet, and if so, do not know what they are called.

A:Processor speed vs hard drive speed

The main point of having a faster processor is that it runs games smoother, compresses audio and video faster, and so on. These tasks are not particularly dependent on hard disk performance. Nearly all applications will benefit from a faster processor regardless of the speed of the hard disk.

i have done many tweaks already

not sure if there firmware updates for my hard drive, so i an trying to find more tweaks that i can do

to make that transfer rate higher with out buying any new hardware

my hard drive is a

If there is new firmware and you can get a hold of it then by all means try. Some drives can gain performance with a new firmware release.

I recently installed a new graphics card in my system, GTX 260. I have 4gb ram with the Q6600 cpu.

But at times framerates drop extremely low and it seems to coincide with my hard drive churning away. I have defragged etc. but I am wondering if this system simply came with a slow hard drive.

How can I find out the speed?

You could read the label

I have come into the habit of periodically checking out my PC at PCPITSTOP. The last 2x i checked I have come up with a warning about unusually slow hard drive speed. Specifically, it has checked my uncached speed at 2.35 megabytes per second, when comparable systems to mine are 7.91 megabytes per second.
I emailed HP tech support about this as my PC is less than a year old.
Their response was to use PC Doctor which is built into the system to test the hard drive. Their answer was that if PC DOCTOR found no problems than I was ok.
My question is this. Who do I trust? PCPITSTOP or PCDOCTOR?

A:Hard Drive Speed

I would have to say that PCDoctor is pretty reliable in its findings. I'm not sure about PCPitStop as I have never used it.

Hi Guys,
I was wondering about something. I just built a brand new system and my windows 7 experience index is all pretty high 7.4 to 7.6 all around but for my hard drive witch has a poor 5.9 and gives me an overall note of 5.9. Is putting an other hard drive of the same make and making it raid going to be any help to speed up things or is my only solution would be to replace the hard drive itself? And overall would it really change anything?

A:How to speed up my hard drive

Raid 0 will give you a speed boost noticable in every day use, but not noticable in that index score, useless though it might be. The best way to increase that index for HDD is to throw it out and put in an SSD.

Hello, I bought a Compaq Presario SR1810NX back in April of 2006, with a 3200+ AMD Sempron Processor and a 100GB hard drive. It has 512mb of RAM. I have a general question to ask. Is it normal for the hard drive to run at different speeds (RPM's) during different program demands? Typically faster during higher demand times and slower during lower demand times. I don't recall this happening when I first bought the computer in 2006.

A:Hard drive speed RPM's

The hard drive always spins at one speed; 7200 RPM is common for most desktop PCs. What issue are you having?

Depends on what the etc stands for at the end of your first line.

It really depends on what you put onto each. Since 10k drives have a size limataion, i would say your OS and main games should go on to that. the 7200 drive should take the grunt files. (pics video non game programs) IMO THis would be the best layout to keep performance up.

Hi all,

I have an acer aspire 5750G, a budget laptop I bought for my university studies. The laptop has just 1 usb 3 port that I am using to connect a Usb 3.0 Iomega eGO drive. The first time I copied some files I noticed that the speed was unusually low. So I downloaded crystaldiskmark to perform some benchmarks and I get around 28mb/s seq read and 25mb/s seq write. In reviews I read the drive had about 80m/s read...

What am I doing wrong? The laptop has no actual usb 3 port (it looks different physically than the others and reviews state otherwise as well)? The drive is not a usb 3 drive although it is indicated clearly on the casing and packaging? Driver problems?

I run my computer off an SSD.

But I have 2 Samsung 2TB drives for storage.

I regularly have to transfer filed from one 2TB drive to the other. Until not it has always been a fairly speedy process.

The problem I am having:

I am transferring a large file (5GBish) and for the first 5/10 seconds it transfers between 120 MB/sec - 150 MB/sec, but after that it suddenly starts slowing down, until about a minute later it's sitting at around 20 MB/sec.

I'm sure this never happened before? What is going on?

A:Hard Drive - Read/Write Speed Cap?

Actually, this looks normal, it is just taking a long time for one or two of those apps to get past Initialization stage. What is that "VProtect" thing, and I don't like that "Antimalware" thing you got underneath it.

If this is a Laptop, then it is most likely you are capped, at 5400rpm. I am going to check something, BRB.

Ok, "Capped at 10mbps" looks better than mine, the highest I see on mine is 5mbps. But I need to check my system while it boots.

When I boot this PC, all of the stuff that is loading makes everything peg out at 100%, not just HD, but CPU and RAM as well. But once it gets past it, everything goes down to very low use.

Can I swap out my laptop processor for a faster one? HD?

I suppose I should post this under "portable computing"... but does anyone know how I can upgrade my laptop? I've built many desktops over the years, but never got inside a laptop. I's like to put in a faster processor, and a bigger, faster hard drive, but not sure if I can, or if it will improve the speed... I loaded the RAM to its max, though it says it will only take EDO, unfortunately...luckily, I searched for hours online and found a hardware dealer that sells 128 meg EDO SO-DIMM sticks for $75 (everywhere else they cost $200-$300).

Here's what I have:

Dell Latitude CPi D300XT (just bought it used, in perfect condition)

Pentium II 300 processor

6.4 meg IBM hard drive (which runs at only 4400 they make any laptop hd's faster?)

Windows XP (despite what Dell and others told me, XP not only works on this machine... but makes it fly!).

So... does anyone know whether I can open this little Dell up and remove the CPU, and replace it with, say, a P-II 600, or even a P-III? And what about a bigger (faster?) hard drive, a good idea?

If anyone else has any upgrade or tweak ideas, please speak up. Though this runs fast, I'm used to running my AMD 1800 XP system with 768 of DDR... so, I'd like a little more speed from this laptop (though I only paid $250, I guess I shouldn't ask for too much more).

also... anyone know where I might find updated driver for the
NeoMagic 2160 video chip?

Does it make a difference how big your hard drive is, in regards to how fast your pc will run. In other words, will a larger hard drive slow down your computer. Or is a very big hard drive, sometimes too much for a pc with a slow processer to handle. I sent my father to the store to get a hard drive for my little sister. Told him to get a 20 gb drive, as she only has a 530 mhz processer. He came back with a 120 GB drive, and said that the salesman had talked him into buying it. They had a sale and it was only 20.00 more. Will her processer handle this size drive? Thanks. Your response is a appreciated.

Hi matts,

Have you partitioned the drive? or you installed OS on 2TB hard drive? You must have installed other programs on this drive as well. So, now the OS has to read the whole drive before it boots or shuts down. You can check the disk for errors.

I copied some large files from a SATA harddrive across a wired Ethernet 100Base-T network to a new LaCie NAS harddrive. I was surprised at how long it was taking, so checked Networking in Task Monitor. The network was shown to be operating at only 25-35% of its 100Mbps capacity. CPU was running less than 20% capacity. No other programs were running and nothing else was being transferred over the network. Computer a 1GB RAM, so that should not have been a bottle neck.

Is that a normal harddrive transfer rate or do I have a problem somewhere?

I have Hard hard -> work issue drive at down slow been experiencing this issue on a regular basis ever since I got my Vista desktop Recently I upgraded to Windows and the problem persists Every once in a while the hard drive starts working intensively and the computer becomes almost unresponsive It stays like this Hard drive hard at work -> slow down issue for anywhere between minutes and a couple hours If I reboot the Hard drive hard at work -> slow down issue issue does not go away the quot process quot continues until it completes at which moment the computer becomes normally responsive again I have tried Hard drive hard at work -> slow down issue to track down the culprit using both the Task Manager Resource Monitor and Process Explorer It's not obvious what the process causing the slowdown is but it seems to run in a svchost exe I am quite sure that changes to very large files on the hard drive hundreds on megabytes gigabytes trigger it CPU usage is relatively low For diagnostic purposes I have disabled several tasks antivirus antimalware defragmentation system restore prefetch windows search file indexing -- to no avail the problem persists My theory so far is this when files on the hard drive undergo changes particularly large files Windows runs some scheduled process at normal priority to reorganize the hard drive and or compress or defragment files irrespective of my settings The larger the files the more time it takes to complete and the longer system responsiveness is limited The annoyance is that during this time I cannot use the computer I have to wait it out As I mentioned rebooting does not help As a matter of fact if I reboot then the shutdown and restart are extremely slow can take - minutes each It drives me crazy I was hoping that the upgrade to Windows would fix the problem but it didn't Any advice

I have been using a USB 2.0 Seagate 250GB external hard drive for a number of years and it's been working fine.

My laptop has USB 3.0 ports.

The last couple of weeks it's got really slow (less than a MBs) when transferring a video file.

I checked the hard drive for errors - none were found.
USB drivers are up to date Driver Booster 3 says.
Is there some settings I could try to speed things up?

As far as I know I've not changed anything so I don't know why it's suddenly got so slow.

A:Extremely slow transfer speed to external hard drive

If you right click the drive in Device Manager and look through the Properties you may see an option to either treat the drive as removable or permanent. Removable supposedly you can unplug without ejecting. But it is slow. Permanent supposedly enables write caching. Likely it was set to permanent before.

If nothing seems apropos you can try the old trick of deleting the drivers and rebooting. Plug and play will install the same drivers that were there but will do it "right" somehow. I have seen a lot of problems disappear just by doing this on a particular device. That is why support does it. Anecdotal success rate seems to me around 50%.

Hi Everyone.

I have recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows. I have also had to replace the motherboard, CPU and power supply. I borrowed a 1.5 TB Freecom firewire external hard drive from a friend to back-up important data before the format, but the transfer speed is uselessly slow now that I am attempting to put the data back on the drive.

I have tried:

- updating the drivers for the firewire card
- switching to 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) in the device manager
- Optimizing the drive for 'better performance' as opposed to 'speedy removal' in the drive's properties.

As things stand at the moment, I am getting about 400 kb/ps transfer speed from the external to my on-board drive. As you can imagine, this is virtually useless to me, considering I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of data to transfer.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Extremely slow transfer speed from external hard drive

The best option if the external HD offers an eSata port would be to plug the drive in by either an eSata port provided with the case you or by an addon eSata card. Even when backing things up on a drive in a usb enclosure like seeing a full system image made the data transfer rate slows to a crawl.

One example for that was an image made from a 7 laptop to the drive in the external enclosure taking some 3hrs. to finish from a 120gb drive with hardly anything on it and comparing that to an image totally 497gb made to another internal drive on the desktop here only taking about 35min.!

Unfortunately the only other option would be removing the drive from the self contained external casing it came in to install internally like I did with one WD Essentials 500gb model during the beta and RC testing of 7 simply to add in an extra drive. Otherwise you have to suffer with what the firewire bus will allow.

Of course if it did have an eSata port you could also open the side cover on the case while powered down long enough to plug the drive into a port on the board long enough to see everything copied over which would be faster but just a little awkward. Then you would be using the onboard sata controllers.

A:External SATA III USB hard drive runs slowly, how to test speed?

Data transfers to USB drives do seem to be slower than transfers to internal drives and I also have slowness with the front USB 2.0 ports. I use this product in my computer:
4-port USB 2.0 High Speed Front-Bay Hub - Black | C2G
Power comes from the PC's power supply and the data cable plugs into a port on the rear.
Haven't gotten a similar product for USB 3.0 ports yet but this page shows several:
With Notebooks now including eSATA ports on some models I'm starting to think about that for my one Desktop that could use such a drive.

I decided to do a backup of my data, because I will be formatting my laptop. I'm using a WD elements 1TB hard drive (usb-powered). While it does support USB 3.0, my laptop doesn't. It is half full, still has about 400GB of free space.

My problem is, when I'm copying any files onto it, the speed drops below 1MB/s and I'm not sure why. Is it because the disk is half full? It is a real pain to copy the files and folders one after another, waiting for each one to finish...

Edit: For some reason it now copies at 10-20 MB/s...

hi wizardcia,

Chances are your mainboard doesn't support Sata300, only sata150.

On the drive or in it's little manual you can see how to set the jumper for sata150.

Don't worry about sata150 being theoretically slower.
Your drive in that system will never come even close to the 150mb/s boundary.

Good luck

Hey, bought a new computer HP 110-414 desk top ! It is supposed to have 1TB hard drive but it shows in the specs as 786 mb out of 814 mb what's up with that ?? I have checked the Apps & all are in small MB's ! Wonder what will happen when the max is reached on drive "C" and where the system is stored "D" is showing 1912 mb's ..... It should be showing both in TB's not MB's !! Any ideas ??

Hello flashh4,

Due to the way the drive sizes are marketed, the size is not actually 1TB (1024 GB). It's more likely around 931-910 GB in size instead minus what is being used by Windows and what you have installed/saved.

HDD's - the Advertized size vs the Actual size. - Windows 7 Help Forums

Please post a screenshot of your Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) window showing the full layout of this hard drive to see what else may be using the space. For example, recovery partitions.

hello i have recently reinstalled windows. I had two sata hdds hooked up on the previous install. When i booted back up after windows had finished setup, the drive with the os was working properly but the drive with other misc files wasnt showing information. When i go to disk management it reads it as a 130 gb drive when it should be 320 gb. I click on the drive in my computer and it asks me if i want to format. I said no hoping my info is still there.
A local computer shop told me that i must convert the disk to dynamic in order for windows to recognize it. Is this true and will it format the drive if so? Anyone have any other suggestions as to what the problem can be/solutions? thanks in advance.

A friend was having problems with her printer, so she call lexmark and the guy went in remote to her computer to try to resolve the problem. He went into task manager and unchecked and stop everything that was running on her computer. Now her computer won't boot up. I tried everything I can think of, nothing works.
It won't boot normally or in safe mode, it just reboots.
I tried the disc to go into recovery and it tells me there is no hard drive present.
I went into the dell recovery patrition and ran all the tests but it says it can't read the hard drive.
The hard drive does show up in the bios. (it's a sata if that matters)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I recently replace my hard-drive to a 500 GB Western Digital, and added 512MB of memory to the current 256 MB. I installed Windows XP and got all my updates etc etc. I went to my Disk Defragmenter and noticed that something is really wrong, it says my capacity is 128GB. I went to my computer, right clicked on my Hard-drive and selected properties it says 127GB. I'm really confused about what I should do about this issue.

Does anyone have any idea's, I don't have a clue.

A:Hard Drive Issue(s)

What are the make/models of the Hard drives? Have you tried going into your bios and set the 2 Terabyte hard drive as primary? In my opinion, I would eliminate Windows Vista (no point in running Dual Boot Windows Vista AND Windows 7). If you've already saved what you want from the 750 GB hard drive, then I would just format it and use it as extra storage until it no longer works, or just eliminate it totally from the system. You can setup profiles if you are worried about keeping information separate or you can give another operating system (Linux) a try.

So as the title says I am having a hard drive issue. What is going on I have nexstar 3 external hard drive. I have use this for years however it has failed and stopped working. I contacted support and they said if I get the same model I can still access the data on the hard drive. First of all is this true? Next is the model I have has been discontinued so is there another way to save my data? Please explain this in detail for me I do not mind a long explanation.

A:Hard drive issue

First of all, do you have a current backup of anything important on the drive?
Next what the mfg is referring to is to buy the same housing and pull your drive and install it. That will only work IF it is the housing that failed and not the drive.

You can pull your drive out of the housing and attempt to connect the drive as an internal hd. This will tell you very quickly if the drive has failed or the housing has failed.

Remember if you do not have at least two copies of data files [on separate media] then you do not care about the data AND you should expect to lose said data. ALL drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail. With a current backup, it is a very simple matter to install a new drive and copy the data files over.

Had to re-format my grandsons 150gig HD. Use XP home
(XPH) disk that came with his comp. After formating I loaded
the XPH and re-booted and let XPH do it's thing. After all was
said and done I checked the drive through explorer and discovered
that the 150gig HD was now a 4.50gig HD.

Could someone PLEASE tell me WHAT the heck happened to reduce the
drive DOWN to a 4.50 form a 150gig.

Also - and this is what made me check his drive on my system as a
slave -after re-booting from the re-formating the keyboard and mouse stopped working during the boot-up.

WHAT HAPPENED and WHY did the keyboard/mouse stop working,
I'm sure the drivers did not load or some such and is there a FIX
for all the above.

A:Hard Drive Issue

Check how you put the keyboard and mouse back in, AKA the connections, also try the bios. may have disabled them? Try a USB keyboard if you were using PS/2

As for the HDD, youve probably formatted it into a format Windows wont recognise as a usable storage HDD (NTFS or FAT32)

So go into Administrative tools, component manager, then disk manager and check out the seperate partition. - This is all in classic view control panel.

Hope this helps.

Hello. I have recently been getting a multitude of STOP 0x errors. They vary in frequency and type. I have recieved multiple 0x77 errors, one or two 0x50 errors and just a singular 0x80 error.

These errors have happened when I was installing ut2004 or when I was installing half-life on my computer. I also got an 0x77 error when I was pre-caching half-life 2 on Steam. The site I used to research these errors wasn't very clear on their cause and there was no "link" between the 3 different error codes.

My question for you guys is, do you think these problems are indicating a hardware failure? If so what is failing?

Any help on this issue would be very much appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Hello Adeason, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It most certainly sounds like your hard drive has kicked the bucket, and is now dead as a door nail. R.I.P.

You'll need to get a new 2.5" hard drive to replace the dead one, then do a clean install of Windows 8 or 7 on it.

Open your computer's case and check that the fan(s) are all running. Check to see if the inside is clean and free of a lot of dust and other crud... If it is not clean, clean it out. Check that the cables to the hard drive are solidly connected. If you still can't get it to boot, the hard drive is toast

Okay, I was curious.. For the 137 GB barrier for the harddrive, does it occur for if the one hard drive is over 137 or if the total storage is over 137 gb. Because I'm trying to get my second hard drive working, and I've set both jumpers to cable select (since they both support it) however the total storage is 140 gb's (60, 80) and the bios doesn't reconize it....

If anyone could answer this question, I could go ahead and try to solve the problem a bit better. Anyways, thanks for your time

A:Hard Drive Issue

It sounds like the drive is very, very close to being dead.

Those few minutes of up-time you get may be all that's left - try getting what you can off of the drive during that time. You won't be able to get a system image of it though, just data (in image would require too much time).

A:Hard Drive Issue

It does sound like a bad controller on the drive. Depending on the brand and if it was properly registered when purchased, you may find that the drive is still under warranty. Check the manufacturers website. Especially if it's a Western Digital since they have online tracking for warranty based on the model/serial number.

While you at the website, check for any drive utilities that the manufacturer has, most of the time these utilities can detect the drive and tell what's wrong. It could be as simple as changing the UDMA mode to be supported by your raid controller.

On my Windows 7 computer I've been getting a lot of weird hanging/freezing issues. I did a virus check, hijaackthis scan, and general look at the windows process to make sure nothing funny was going on. I found nothing - nor is there any weird popups or anything.

The problem is basically I'll have a firefox window open and sometimes it'll just freeze. Sometimes windows explorer hangs up. I''ll be playing starcraft 2 and it minimizes saying that "there isn't enough memory available".

What hardware part do you think is responsible for these issues? I have a 30 GB SSD and 4 GB of DDR2 RAM.
