Dell Inspiron 530 extreme fan noise and temps. Changing processor state reduces it :S

Q: Dell Inspiron 530 extreme fan noise and temps. Changing processor state reduces it :S

I m a little confused about what s going on with my PC Basically recently processor Changing extreme it :S Dell noise temps. state Inspiron 530 and fan reduces my Dell Inspiron Vista Home has been extremely noisy When I m just on the desktop there is almost no noise the fans are silent However when I play almost any game visit a site such as google maps open Microsoft Outbox or almost any other program that is a little bit tough on the system resources the fan noise increases from silent to the noisiest it could possibly be in a matter of seconds It almost seems like it s all or nothing with the fan noise it either makes no noise at all or makes a horrendous noise Dell Inspiron 530 extreme fan noise and temps. Changing processor state reduces it :S when I run just about any program All these programs never before caused Dell Inspiron 530 extreme fan noise and temps. Changing processor state reduces it :S the fan to make such a loud noise I decided to use SpeedFan to try and work out the problem There are some unusual things I have observed When I open a simple java browser game Runescape in this case the Temp reaches C This is simply on the start screen not playing the game at all However this is what really confuses me and I m sure you can make sense of it When I go to the quot Power Options quot in Control Panel click quot Change plan settings quot and go to the quot Processor power management quot section it gives me the option to change the quot Maximum processor state quot This was previously at so I changed it to and changed the quot Mininum processor state quot to Magically the sound dissappeared The Runescape start screen gave me very little fan noise and there was no noticable difference to the performance of the game If anything it ran smoother Even though Vista told me my performance should now be reduced And whats more Speedfan tells me the Temp is at a mere C So changing these settings caused a reduction of C and gave me almost silent fans from deafening ones What is going on S So I now don t have the crazy fan noise but I don t understand why I had to change the processor state options to reduce it I ve had this PC for years with it on for both min and max processor state and it has previously been fine no excessive noise This is a good temporary fix but I m worried there may be something wrong with my processor like it is reading the temperatures wrong or for some reason just pushing the fan to go fast unnecessarily Also I don t even understand what I have changed and is it safe to run the PC on these lowered settings The control panel tells me that from reducing the processor state I should now have reduced performance but I don t see any Or is this just because I am not running the really intense programs that require the full processor I d really appreciate any advice help as I m just really confused right now and not sure if I should replace the fan power source or if it s something more serious like with the processor Thanks nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

2. What temperature would be considered "high" (resulting in damage to the CPU/HDD)?

3. Should there be frequent changes in temperature?

Thanks!

Hi all I have a Dell Inspiron all standard hardware and recently I ve been having problems with the PSU staying connected and charging the battery I has begun to make a high-pitched whine while it is on whenever I plug Dell Noise Power Inspiron Jack in a PSU I ve tried three different types one dell and two generic For this reason I doubt it is the PSU I opened it up to clean it out and Dell Inspiron Power Jack Noise see if there was anything visibly wrong and saw that there is a little browning around where it connects to the motherboard as well as a few small spots nearby other soldering points I haven t payed attention to the coloring of the components before but I m worried that it s begun to damage things I plugged in the PSU while it was open to test if any sounds were being made while it was off and I heard a clicking sound every or so seconds Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions Replacing the motherboard aka Dell s solution to all hardware problems is probably not an option since they seem to run higher than what a new computer would cost nbsp

Hi SISS292,Does the system overheat? Are there bluescreens / system crashes? What is the current OS installed on the system? Is the fan issue seen while the system is in laptop mode or in tablet mode or both?Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/2cVSFCl- restart the system and check.Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional. Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.Let us know if you have any other queries.

I bought a Dell Inspiron i3148-6840sLV 11.6-Inch 2 in 1 Convertible Touchscreen Laptop (Intel Core
i3 Processor, 4GB RAM) on a whim yesterday from Costco. I have 90 days to use it and return it. I paid $399.99. So far I rather like it.

This is not my main computer but I would use it as my main laptop because of portability, etc. I am wondering if an upgrade to a SSD would be worthwhile and if so, what kind, etc.

At this price, plus with the addition of the SSD, is there something a lot better I should consider or it that too subjective?

Any input welcome.

Thank you.

A:Dell Inspiron 11.6 2 in 1 with i3 Processor. SSD?

What I found is that your unit probably has a 500GB HDD but an equivalent-sized SSD may cost close to the same amount. The only time I've seen a change from HDD to SSD it worked best by doing a clean install on the SSD from the Factory Restore discs made while still running the HDD.

Hi Dell Support,

I am having so much problem on this unit. First issue the graphics not responding and now second the loud fan noise! *** is happening to my Laptop. I just buy this laptop Last January 2016 and I am having so much problem on it! Can anyone repair or replace it? Please let me know if I can still replace or repair this laptop!

A:Dell Inspiron 15 5559 Loud Fan Noise and Not Responding Graphics

Hi BONGSKY,
Does the system overheat? Does it stop working or turn off automatically? Are there any bluescreens / system crashes? When did the issue start? When do you encounter the graphics issue? What exactly is the problem with the graphics adapter / driver? What graphics adapter do you have an issue with? Is the issue seen with or without the adapter connected?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1TZqnDE
Download the Intel video drivers from - http://intel.ly/1RdHykJ - for your OS and the AMD drivers from - http://bit.ly/1Lqm0Ld for Windows 8.1 and http://bit.ly/1iqwIba - for Windows 10.
Create a system restore point and then uninstall the existing video drivers from device manager and programs and features - then restart the system and install the Intel Driver first and then the AMD driver next. Should you have any issues during or after installation, you could always restore the system back.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
If the system is under warranty, then contact us via Twitter - @dellcares for faster communication or write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details. If there is no warranty, then we can help with a paid service call if required.
Keep us updated.

When I put a CD in the drive, it makes a loud noise and the laptop vibrates. However, this only happens when I put a CD-RW disc in the drive. When I put another CD in, such as an audio CD, it doesn't make this noise.
Does this suggest the CD/DVD drive needs replacing?

Hi would anybody be able to give me any info on upgrading the processor on this laptop? Thanks

A:Upgrade processor Dell Inspiron N7110

Upgradeability depends on what's in the system now.  They were shipped with up to an i7 2630QM CPU.  You're limited to the second-generation Core i CPUs, and if you upgrade from an i5 or lower to an i7, you may need a new AC adapter as well (you'll need 130W or better depending on the GPU in the system, where the i5 will work with a 90W or lower adapter).

Hi everyone!I want to ask you ...which one CPU i can put to my Laptop .Dell Inspiron M5010Now it's:Athlon II P340 Dual core

A:Dell Inspiron M5010 Upgrade processor

Dell did ship these with Phenom II-X4 CPUs, so most of the Socket S1-G4 CPUs should work.  Stick to models with identical or similar power requirements - installing a CPU that requires more power than the original, is an invitation to system instability.

Hi
I have a dell inspiron 580 and i want to upgrade the processor from intel core i3 to intel core i5. But first i need to know what is the socket type of the processor so i would know which one to buy. I tried to find it on google but i couldnt. Is it h2 lga 1155, or 1156 or h lga or h57?
Also if you have any recommendations for i5 processors then reply!
Thank You

A:Dell Inspiron 580 Processor Socket Type?

Hi malick4132,
Dell has tested Inspiron 580 with the following processors without any issues:

Intel Pentium G6950
Intel Core i3 - 530, 540
Intel Core i5 - 750, 650

Your computer is shipped with Mobile Intel H57 Express Chipset. For more information on this, you may refer to link: http://intel.ly/XJYkuG
Click on the compatible products to get the list of processors compatible with your computer. Most of them support LGA1156 socket or FCLGA1156 socket. Both are almost similar. Please ensure to update system BIOS before you upgrade the processor on computer.

Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go  ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.
Please reply for further clarifications.

I notice an electrical/buzzing sound when my laptop is connected to the mains.  The noise isn't coming from the power supply but from the laptop itself.  This noise coincides with CPU activity which leads me to think it may be 'CPU whine' but if that's the case I don't understand why there is no noise when running from battery.  My model has SSD storage so not expecting any noise to be coming from the HDD.  Any ideas as to what might be causing this?  Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 15 7000 - Buzz/electrical noise (hard to describe) when connected to AC

Just received mine today (4K 16Gb RAM and SSD), and I have the same issue here.
There is this annoying buzzing/screeching/scratching noise like an old hard drive would do when busy and it is coming from the center area near F7 key, below the screen but not inside the screen. It also seems to match the CPU activity (actually non activity), although the sound disappear while scrolling. This noise is really noticable only when plugged. It's a lot lower on battery.
It is also stronger when the keyboard backlight is on and after a little search, it seems that it is not the first dell laptop to having that issue. Apparently the previous XPS 15 has it too and a few more.
Note that I use a french version of the laptop and the power comes into the adapter at 220V.
I am seriously considering returning the laptop as this is a real issue and dell was aware of the same problem on others models released prior to this one and obviously didn't do anything about it to solve this on the latest releases.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 and it list the processor clock speed at 1000/733 mhz. The processor speed is currently at 733 mhz. Is there a setting that can be changed to achieve the full 1000mhz clock speed?

A:Is Dell Inspiron 8100 processor speed correct?

Your Inspiron like many notebooks will throttle back your processor speed to reduce heat and prolong battery life. So even though it is a ~1Ghz processor it will at times run at 733MHz. That's normal behavior. You might be able to disable this feature in Control Panel/Power Options.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 that I traded for today. I washed the keyboard clean of all the dried, gummy CocaCola that was in it and it works fine now. It has a 2.0-GHz Celeron processor. I don't think much of Celerons and I have an unused 3.0-GHz Pentium 4, socket 478 gathering dust here.

I haven't found anything at Dell's site or in a Google search that tells me for absolutely certain whether this is a socket-478 system and whether it is replacable. So far, it seems replacable; but, I need to know the socket type. I don't want to disassemble this thing just to find out the processor I have will not fit.

I Dell Processor battery unless hot disconnect sink I 3137, Inspiron heat 11 stays have Dell Inspiron 11 3137, Processor heat sink stays hot unless I disconnect battery a Dell Inspiron that has served me well up to this point nbsp Upgrade to Windows went well no prior issues Recently and possibly after some driver updates I noticed the laptop was having problems waking from sleep mode nbsp I usually leave it plugged in overnight with sleep mode nbsp In the morning it would not wake opening the lid and or pressing the power button nbsp The only option was holding the power button for about seconds and then pressing it again and it would normally restart nbsp That was when I noticed something I have never seen before on any laptop I have ever had nbsp I decided not to use sleep mode and turned the computer off completely nbsp To my surprise the computer stayed warm on the bottom but not by the battery nbsp It was up higher by the processor nbsp I removed the AC adapter power and waited for it to cool but it did not nbsp An hour later the computer was still hot on the bottom near the processor nbsp I removed the bottom cover and sure enough the copper heat sink from the fan to the processor was very hot with the computer turned off for over an hour and the AC adapter removed nbsp I disconnected the battery and of course the copper heat sink clipped to the top of the processor then cooled almost immediately I did some research and doing a battery pull is one of the suggested reset guides for a number of problems with this laptop so I gave it another try nbsp Things worked okay for about two days then it happened again just now nbsp I had to remove the battery connector to stop what must be power going to the main processor with the laptop turned off and causing both battery drain and the heat sink to get hotter than I would like to leave the laptop unattended nbsp Obviously I would never put it into a case or my backpack under these circumstances I have tried resetting the BIOS to the default setting and testing the AC adapter voltage is good nbsp Drivers are all correct and current nbsp Note nbsp the battery itself does not get hot and shows as being good nbsp Only the processor or more accurately the heat sink over the processor gets and stays hot while the computer is turned off Any ideas nbsp Thanks Art Penrose

So I was hoping to be able to add a second monitor with my Dell Inspiron, but I didn't have an extra monitor just lying around, so I was hoping to be able to use my old laptop for the same purpose. I tried hooking up the two computers with an HDMI cable, but there was no response. I'm fairly certain that the issue lies in the Inspiron's Display Adapter, which uses the Intel graphics card instead of the Nvidia one that is also installed. Is there some way to change the display adapter that the computer uses?
Or, if I'm just completely wrong about what's causing my problem, is there something else that could be making it so that my two laptops won't connect via HDMI?

Hi Sharon.

If your game then so am I.

All the things you stated sound like a possible infection or operating system corruption due to unknown reasons. Although none, or a questionable one, was found. I am in total agreement with Garmanma. Also the fact that the rootkit scan is disabled in AVG causes me some concern.

Seems you already have a pretty good idea how to format the drive and reinstall your OS and drivers....... But would like to take it one step further in this case though. I would like to have you wipe the entire hard drive to zeroes prior to formatting and installing the OS. This would include what is called the MBR = Master Boot Record, the partition the OS is on as well as the restore partition. Of course this would leave you only the option of reinstalling via the CD. All pre-installed software will be gone for good. Complete restore CDs are usually available from the OEM for a nominal cost.

The only reason I suggest this manner is, 1)The problems you are describing does somewhat resemble infection symptoms. 2)Depending on the possible infection type a simple reformat may not get rid of it. I have also read that it is possible for the restore partition can become infected as well.

The procedures are really pretty easy, the program(s) to wipe the drive to zeroes is free and we will do our best to get you through the whole procedure as painlessly as possible.

Let me know what you decide.

A:Dell Inspiron One 2330 Desktop Black Screen After Changing Boot Option

Do you get any indicator lights that the system is booting besides a black screen?

Are there any lights on the monitor?

Try shining a light to the screen what do you see?

Pressing the screen side buttons for menu does the online display come on?

Try resetting the bios once more. This time completely remove the power cord and press the power on button to clear any voltages left in the system, then clear the cmos/bios pulling the battery. Put the battery back in and reconnect the power and boot it.

don't know if this is the right place to post-- there is no overclocking and cooling room like in vista forums can the operating system temps processor Odd itself place a burden Odd processor temps on Odd processor temps the processor to cause temps to run higher might sound like an odd question and i really don't know how to phrase it any better but here's the scenario about weeks ago while still running vista x i wanted to push my processor a tad bit higher it is a phenom II x with a stock speed of ghz running with a sunbeam core contact freezer cpu fan control is off with the fan running at max all of the time at stock speed idle temps consistently stayed at c i decided to pushed it to ghz and temps stayed at c- c i must say that at the time i decided to up the clock outdoor temps in the southern california area were about f to f with indoor temps where the computer is located hovering a few degrees cooler f since then i've installed win x outdoor temps for the past few days have been about f to f with indoor temps pretty much consistently about f after installation i wanted up the clock on the proc again i set it back to stock when i installed win this time pushing it to ghz well my temps now--consistently--are at c i know ambient temps weigh into the equation but does the actual operating system play a big part too

A:Odd processor temps

Are you certain that Windows 7 is not slowing the processor down when it's not in high use scenarios? That is my guess as to what is happening. I really don't see the point in setting the CPU at max "all of the time", when it usually only needs to be that fast here and there. Just let Windows control it.

This is a Compaq Presario CQ60-215Dx laptop which was badly overheating. I repasted the Athlon processor but am still getting 90c CPU temp readings with CoreTemp.

I noticed there were two other chips having their heat dissipated by heat sink, one an Nvidia display chip and not sure about the other. But these were using a foam pad on heat sink and not paste. The pads were in good enough condition I left them although thought about using paste. I don't think they're responsible for high temps because these are dual core CPU readings.

Any suggestions of what to look at. The CPU fan is blowing very hot air.

A:Still getting high temps after repasting processor

Just to clarify Greg.

90C at load, or 90C at idle?

The thermal pads should be sufficient for the NVIDIA chipset as it's an integrated NVIDIA 8200 card that's not a heat monster.

Hello I m sorry if someone has posted this before but I cannot find any reference to optimal operating temps for the new AM processors I think on AMD s website says the max temp is upto something but I was wondering if my temps are too high Now I am using some Antec silver-based thermal paste and I m not sure if I applied too much or not It was thicker in some places than others temps? AM2 dual-core AMD processor not uniformly smooth and it covers a lot of the whole die but not the edges So should I reapply AMD dual-core AM2 processor temps? it I also initially used an oil-based nail polish remover to clean the cpu and heat sink but have since removed all that and re-cleaned AMD dual-core AM2 processor temps? with isopropyl alcohol and reapplied the paste The heatsink Thermalright Ultra- came with some white paste which I believe would be silicone based not metallic which I did not use Should I use that instead I m averaging between - or so from idle to load By load I mean I quot m recording channels at once from my tv tuner while watching one of them on vista media center When I stop media center the temps still stay around and I think they should be lower I ve only done this days ago and maybe I should wait longer for the temps to get lower BTW the heatsink is barely warm to the touch shouldn t it be quite hot A friend of mine says his are or so at idle and that sounds too low Mind you he has extra fans on his case and I m trying to keep mine quiet Maybe I need better airflow for my case I ve currently got a mm fan on the heatsink and more mm fan in front of the case blowing air outwards I ve read in many places that this is wrong and it should be sucking in air from outside not pushing it out I m also supposed to add more fan to the back of the case nbsp

A:AMD dual-core AM2 processor temps?

thats about right, never complain about too low.... only be concerned about too hot. If it all seems ok and your worried about low idle temp I wouldn't worry.
the fan placement that i see pretty much standard is always blowing out the back, with everything else brining air in. Put the 120 on the rear blowing out, asap. That should be fine.

I have been shopping for a new notebook computer.

I was looking at a Dell XPS online.

The first choice it gave was processor. You could either pick the Pent. 4 HT 3.4Ghz 15.4 WUXGA or a Pent 4 3.4Ghz HT Extreme Edition WUXGA for $1000 more. Wow. What a difference for same speed processor.

Could anyone comment who knows about the difference between these processors, and if there would be $1000 difference?

Another choice is between a ATI 9700 Radeon 128 MB and a ATI 9800 Radeon 256 MB Graphics. The difference is around $300 dollars. Could someone comment on whether there would be enough difference to justify price on this?

Just these additions adds around $1300. The notebook will have 1 Ghz of Ram, and be used for all the normal stuff in addition to high end gaming.

Any comments appreciated.

A:Notebook - Reg or Extreme Processor?

IMO, the Extreme processor is not worth the money, but the video upgrade would be. If you're playing games, the #1 requirement is a really good video card. A 3.4ghz processor with a gigabyte of memory is not going to be a limiting factor.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Hello, new joiner here..

I have been reading about setting the processor power settings in the control panel to help with Gaming..

I have read one time that I should set "max processor state" to 99% so as to disable TurboBoost which apparently can heat up the computer playing games too long.. or help with pausing/freezing in games..

Can anybody shed some light on what decent settings the Max and Min Processor State % should be at??

So i put Minimum State at 10% and Max at 99% is there a reason why I wouldn't put Min state at 99% and Max state at 99% besides overheating? I am doing this on a Lenovo Laptop.. Plugged in though.

oh and if anyone knows the latest guide on how to setup settings for A SSD harddrive I would love to know that too.. I've looked at tomshardware guide.. but its from like 2013..
thanks

A:Max Processor State 99%

Those power settings for Lenovo I'll let somebody with like model to answer but can help with SSD.
You are right about those recommendations for SSD, most are even older than 2013. Most important part is to have AHCI mode enabled in BIOS, the rest is practically same as for HDD. Nothing special unless it's an old or tiny one.

Hello st time poster with a question- XPS gigahertz Intel Core I - windows megabytes of ram A BIOS The problem encountered was extremely slow screen loads some programs would time out other screens processor extreme in change speed and screen loads Extremely slow took forever to come up The spinning icon was very slow This happened the first time I started up the computer and Dell tech support had me run the F diagnostics all items passed so he had me update the BIOS from A to A and the problem was resolved This was a year and a half ago The same problem happened nights ago I first ran virus scan and malware scan All of them reported no issue I had Verizon reset my FIOS connection and check my Internet-no issue on their Extremely slow screen loads and extreme change in processor speed end I was finally able to resolve the issue the next morning by running the F diagnostics the long version took about hours or so and now the computer is back to Extremely slow screen loads and extreme change in processor speed normal Diagnostics were clean no issues reported and everything passed I have a program that gives a complete profile of my computer-The Belarc Advisor- I ran it while the problem was present and my processor shows a speed of gigahertz not gigahertz I reran the Belarc Advisor after the problem was resolved and now we are back to normal gigahertz Has anybody every encountered this issue or seen the processor speed change so dramatically and then return to normal

A:Extremely slow screen loads and extreme change in processor speed

Unless you mis-typed it, something was wrong with what Belarc found because there's no way a CPU could run at 57.65 GIGA-Hz.

I understand the point of a "maximum processor state." You can lower it to restrict the CPU and gain battery life. The CPU consumes less energy and the fans consume less energy from a cooler thermal load.

I've never really understood the need for a "minimum processor state" though or what it even does for that matter.

Anyone?

A:Minimum Processor State

Say that you're doing something long and intense with the system - and want to leave the computer but continue to process it at a reasonable speed.

Then the power settings won't lower the state below that specified level - so you can keep processing at a certain level even with the power settings turned on.

Hello everyone First post here first things first Hi Secondly I'm experiencing an issue with my laptop running Home Premium My model make is NV U Gateway and I am experiencing some pretty annoying issues Anyways I am hearing quot cpu whine quot or more correctly toroidal coils which are vibrating very rapidly causing interference with the speakers My question is this Whenever my processor goes Processor Minimum State into the sleep state with no jobs that's Minimum Processor State when the computer whines however when the processor is Minimum Processor State actually doing Minimum Processor State something the whine goes away entirely I looked online and found solutions regarding rmclock but I'd prefer finding some more natural solution I went into the power management and found quot Minimum Processor State quot which I believe should fix my problem since it will keep the processor at a higher clock No dice After looking at the cpu utilization it seems as if the cpu completely ignores this minimum processor state setting and lets the cpu go to anyways Is there a known bug with that allows this Can one of you confirm that the cpu simply goes to zero despite any setting you enter Thanks for your help and please let me know if I should provide you with anymore information Yes I've updated drivers windows updates

A:Minimum Processor State

The Minimum Processors State only controls the clock speed, reducing it to use less power and create less heat. It does not keep the processor working at 100% utilization if there is nothing to work on.

I have a new Dell XPS 8900 connected to a Dell U2413 monitor using the HDMI to mini-HDMI cable.  When I switch off the monitor (to save the screen and energy), the PC jumps into an unrecoverable power saving mode, shutting down all open applications in doing so.  The mouse and keyboard lock up.  The only way to restart the PC is to press the power button for several seconds (hard reboot).   This began happening recently.  What can be done to fix?

In power options when you go to change plan settings then processor power management theres a min and max on battery and plugged in, what should they be?I tried researching this but cant understand it, but i think the minimum should both be 5% and the max should be a low number to avoid overheating, i think the max is always 100% default.

Are it and maximum processor state useful on a desktop, or is it just for laptops? Lower and Maximum are both set to 100% for me.
I read that if I lower the minimum, my cpu doesn't reach the max overclock level.

A:CPU Minimum Processor State useful on a desktop?

On a desktop you want as much performance as you can get. So things like setting the power profile to high performance, same applies to CPU, you want that to be on maximum performance all the time.

Hi I was checking my dads computer to see why it is making so much noise noise Processor fan I opened it up and it appears to be coming from the processor The computer is - months old the processor is a intel pentium The fan on the processor is like I have never seen before Usualy the fan just sits on top of the processor However this fan is different at first when you open the case you see a big blue pipe sitting where the processor is leading to the front of the case Obviously the heat travels through the pipe and gets blown out the front of the case Processor fan noise by the fan I Processor fan noise was able to remove the pipe and except for some dust the fan was clean After blowing the dust away and putting the fan back i booted it up again It is still noisy and it looks like part of the design Is there any way to make it quiter Also becase I removed the fan do I have to apply more of the gooy stuff that is between the fan and the processor A friend told me it helps with heat resistance and because I removed the fan if I may need to put more on Can anyone confirm this please Please help nbsp

Hi,

Does anyone know how to set the maximum processor state to 200% such that it can fully take advantage of the processor.

Possibly a registry key, where to manually change it. Because it won't take anything above 100%, even if you type it, and hit apply.

Advance Thanks

Hello

I have a asus vivotab8 that had windows 8.1 on it. I used these reg edits from this post

Power Options - Add or Remove "Min/Max processor state"

to create the minimum and maximum processor state entries on my windows 8.1 tablet power management entries (which didn't have them).

Now that I have updated to windows 10, those power management options have disappeared again. i dont know why they were missing in the intial windows 8.1 and now in the windows 10 upgrade version also. But the registry edits really helped a lot. As my tablet suffers from severe lag otherwise, unless I set minimum cpu to 40%.

I was wondering is it safe for me to use those windows 8 registry edits on the windows 10 operating system to bring them back? As desperately need to set a higher minimum cpu use.

No idea what is causing this, but it switches by itself to 100% on balanced plan.
I'll set it to 5%, and it will stay there for a couple of minutes, but after that it is again at 100%. It happens only to "on battery" setting, "plugged in" stays at 5%.
I'm running ASUS X75V notebook, clean windows 10, no asus bloatware. Only programs installed that sit in tray are avg, gdrive and dropbox.

Hello

Recently updated my MSI Bios to latest version and one thing i realised was the CPU fan getting loud. So i went to Power Options in Windows 7 and wanted to adjust the Minimum Processor State and Maximum Processor State.

But when I am in the Power Management part, all I see is the Cooling Policy (Passive or Active). Previously there were 2 other options showing Minimum Processor State and Maximum Processor State. Now they are gone.

I'm not too sure what could have disabled or removed them.

Any clue or technical enlightenment will be appreciated!

thanks!

A:Minimum & Maximum Processor State option

It sounds as if the BIOS update may have cut out those options from the setup utility.

That doesn't mean they're gone; perhaps they're combined with another setting.

Welcome to the Forums!

1.) Wrong forum to put this. It should go under "Cooling and Modding".

2.) Check to see if the heat sink is tight on the CPU cause if it's loose the fan will make it wobble (hence the noise).

Hello Everybody:

Slightly over a month ago, I bought a Gateway Desktop pc at Office Depot. It has Windows Vista, Home Premium, the only browser is Internet Explorer 7. Well, about two weeks ago, the processor began to make a crackling sort of noise, although it works well. However, since the noise started, I've begun to worry that the noise will get worse and result in the computer not working in the future. I phoned Office Depot and they won't replace it with a new one, even though I have only had it for a month and a few days, which seems incredible, so Gateway has suggested that I take it in for diagnostics and repair.
The noise happens whether the computer is idle or not, but seems to happen more when I'm not using it, or it's idle.

Any ideas? Thanks.

A:Serious Power Option reset of Maximum Processor State every sleep/hib

Have you updated the BIOS on that machine to the latest version available (if it hasn't been already)? I remember issues with their thinkpad line last year where resume from sleep would cause the CPU to throttle itself and not come back from throttle, even under A/C power, until a cold power down and reboot (and thus the IBM tools would set OS values incorrectly at times). A BIOS update mid to late last year fixed this problem, so make sure your BIOS is the latest if you can, and it should be very recent too.

no noticeable increase in noise.
here are specs of the fan ,, the heatsink can accomodate 70mm fan as well.
screenshots of  hwmonitor and prime95 using default cooler and a fan attached to it are shown.

pics of how the fan is attached to cooler is also attached.

Hello,

For the last two days upon turning on my computer, there is a loud ringing noise emanating from the CPU or processor and Windows does not load up. After a few seconds/couple of minutes, the noise stops and I get a black screen with some data and at the end I am prompted to either press delete to setup or press F1 to resume. I have been pressing F1 and only then does Windows load. The noise is quite loud and it makes me think that my computer is on its way out, which would be too bad because I can't afford another one at this time.

Any ideas on how the problem could be addressed would be very much appreciated.

If you motherboard has an AGP slot, then you can get pretty much any video card you want, if it doesn't, then you're limited to PCI video cards. Both will probably work better than the integrated stuff, and will free up some system RAM as well. Now, to recommend a card, it's easier just to know your price range...how much are you willing to spend? Also, what kind of games are you planning on playing?

It seems to me that some software occasionally switches off the sound. This effect is very unpleasant when the computer is connected to a PA system as it startles the people around to death.
There is a posting with the same problem at tomshardware forum.
Please help me to solve the problem with this crack sound.

Hi,
I would suggest you to update the BIOS and audio driver on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section and audio driver from audio section onto the system and install it.

For some reason, my computer frequently produces a loud fan noise when I am using it. For the majority of the time, it is silent. However, there are often times when I don't even have many webpages open but it grows louder. There are two levels of loud (the second level is so loud that it can draw attention from people sitting next to me).
This is only a 2 month old laptop, so I am unsure why it gets loud. Also, I have 12gb RAM, which adds to my confusion.
Any suggestions or reasoning? Thanks!

Hi mcharfi,
Welcome to the Dell Community Forum.
I understand the situation. May I know if you experience the system overheating? Please clean the air vents & check if it helps. Also update BIOS & check. Click on the link below, enter the system service tag and click Submit. Select the Operating system from the drop down list to get drivers for your system model:

The Title pretty much explains it for the most part. Its making a noise akin to old-school modems, and seems to coincide with what I do with my mouse most often. Keyboard doesnt seem to generate the sound too much.

It only started this today, i'd wait and call AMD tech support, but if i do, i just may be lacking a moniter when i get to that part

Anyone ever experiance this before? As i said, it jsut started and has never done this before. It really doesnt like it when i use my scroll wheel.

I've just bought a new Dell Inspiron 3250 desktop and turned it on today for the first time.
There is a continual clunking noise coming from it which happens more the harder it works. This is my 3rd Dell and the first two I owned were virtually silent in operation so I'm finding this hard to come to terms with. It is very distracting when I'm trying to work on the computer.
Is this normal or is there something wrong with it?

Yeah that doesnt sound good at all. The spindle may have become slightly off centre and as it spins faster the edge of the disk hits the wall of the drive case or something else. I sujest that you save what you can onto pen drive or external hard drive and buy a new hard drive for it. It would be a good chance to upgrade it aswell.

Hi,
I just bought a Inpiron 24 5459 AIO and noticed the fan is quite noisy. The fan seems to always spin at high speed regardless CPU temperature. Does this model supports fan speed PWM? Or maybe my unit is defective?

Thanks,

Jack

I have Dell Inspiron 3537-6958 with Windows 8.1 and latest drivers downloaded from Dell support website.
I don't use Skype often but today friend of mine told me that she can barely hear me from all background "noise" (static). After finishing chat I tried reinstalling drivers, trying windows ones, and so on and so forth multiple times.
To avoid calling Skype sound-test bot (or whatever name is) I downloaded sound recorder.
90% of sound is just noise, I can barely hear my voice when speaking in normal tone. I tried playing with microphone boost (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%) and I cannot tell witch one is worst, DC offset cancelation also doesn't help. In Dell Audio I tried Microphone Enhancement On/Off without any luck.
Not sure what else to try. All ideas are welcome.

A:Inspiron 3537 built-in mic has too many noise/static

locodogTo avoid calling Skype sound-test bot (or whatever name is) I downloaded sound recorder.
Is it Windows Sound Recorder? That is included in Windows and is the test I would have used also. Because it failed the Sound Recorder test there is a good chance that the mic hardware has failed. Contact tech support if you are still under warranty.
A great test of hardware is to perform a system recovery. If the mic does not work immediately after a system recovery then it has definitely failed.

My microphone generates a steadily rising noise when I do not speak into it for several seconds. When I do speak, it is perfectly clear and quiet, however a few seconds of silence and the noise begins again.
Help would be appreciated.

Greetings,

I think I have a big problem:

For a couple of weeks, I had a bad RAM module (512 MB) in my Inspiron 9300. Sometimes my laptop crashed, just like last night. But when I booted (very slow) my laptop this morning, my fans immediately runned at 100%. So I removed the bad RAM module and did a system restore, hoping this would help. It didn't. Then I started I8kfanGUI and these are the results:

CPU speed: 220 Mhz (should be 800 idle and 2000 stressed)
Temperature: 85 C (normal peak values are 70 degrees, idle: 35 degrees)
CPU load: mostly 100 %, base load is about 60 %
Fans: CPU: 5345 RPM and Nvidia fan: 5231 RPM, so both at max...
GPU, Memory, Chipset temperature: missing! strange...

What can I do about it? Will a complete format help, or is this a hardware issue... Maybe Bios? I just hope my CPU isn't damaged... Warranty is over.

Many thanks

Alexander

Please may I have the Dell part numbers for the cooling fans, as it seems both have gone bad.  After a few minutes they start screeching so loud I have to power down.  I am certain it is the fans and would just as soon replace all fans at once while the unit is apart.  I have the Service Manual.  Thank you.

I started using this new laptop on Oct 12. Shortly afterwards I had the big Windows 10 update. Now I have an intermittent and random cracking noise in the audio. It almost sounds like some one has plugged a jack in to a PA system. I hear it through my headphones, my external speakers, and straight from the laptop (nothing plugged in to the jack). I have the latest BIOS installed (A11). I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the Realtek audio driver (7737). I switched to the Microsoft native driver. Nothing works. I tried "Chat with Technical Support" a few hours ago but no reply there. I can't figure it out.
