On-board sound card is not recognized

Q: On-board sound card is not recognized

Hello,
As the topic says, my computer doesn't detect my on-board sound card. It all started when I tried to install new audio drivers from manufacturers page, but the next day when I booted PC up there were no sound. In Device Manager, under Sounds, game,.. controllers tab sit 4-5 High Definition Audio Devices. Here's pic:

Then tried re-installing original audio drivers from motherboard CD, enabling/disabling On-Board HD Audio in BIOS but still no luck.

My Audio Device is VIA VT1705.
DxDiag shows that no sound card was found.

This is what is shown in Playback Devices tab:

But I have no HDMI kind audio devices..

How to make my system recognize my sound card?

Preferred Solution: On-board sound card is not recognized

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
My motherboard reads 'Intel D850MV/D850EMV2'
Ever since I reloaded 'Windows 2000 Prfessional' my sound doesn't work. My speakers are functional. So the problem isn't there. I downloaded a sound-card utility programme. When I run it, it says that I don't have a sound card. That can not be, since my motherboard has an on-board sound device.
Do I need to reload windows? What are the possible solutions? One of my friends suggested that I look for drivers for the sound card. That is not working cos my computer refuses to believe that a sound card exists anywhere on the system! If that be so the question of drivers doesn't arise at this stage. How do I get my computer to believe that there is a sound card available to it?
Thanks in anticipation.

A:On-Board sound card not being recognized

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Untill you install the sound drivers, your computer won`t recognise your sound card.

Go HERE and download, and install your audio drivers.

Might I also suggest you download your chipset drivers as well.

Hi,

We have been having a problem with a SOund card we recently installed... The sound is warped when we use it in conjuntion with Windows Media Encoder. I wonder if it could be the mother board or the sound card which is an Echo Mia Midi card.

Any input is appreciated.

I am trying to put my LP collection onto cd.
I have worked out how to do it but the recorded sound is poor.
I only have a mic in socket on the back of the puter (no line in) and the chip is onboard the motherboard.
Would a seperate soundcard with a line in jack be better?
I am on a limited budget so I am looking at a Soundblaster Live 1024 card.
Would this improve the quality of the final record.

Thanks in advance

I have never done it but can only assume that a direct connect would yield higher quality than using a microphone for the pickup. The microphones always seem low quality to me anyways.

A:On board sound card cannot play sound

When you reformatted and reinstalled Windows, you lost many of the drivers you formerly had installed. Now you have to reinstall any drivers that are missing. Check the Device Manager and if you see any yellow symbols next to any device listed, those need drivers installed.

For your onboard sound, for example, you should find the sound driver on the motherboard driver CD that should have or might have come with it. If you don't have this CD, you should be able to download the onboard sound driver from the motherboard manufacturer's website. In your case, I think the manufacturer is ECS Elitegroup.

3 (Green, blue, pink) is common on older boards, 4, 5 or more commonly 6 jacks for newer (and 5.1 +) sound codecs.
If you post some details of the system/board the forum will be able to give you a more definitive answer.

I am running a machine with windows XP sp 2, 4 gigs of ram, MS 7336 ver. 1 bios 1.08 Motherboard, and the radeon HD 5850 with the 10.10 catalyst. I was having trouble with my audigy 2 sound card so it was removed to be checked on another machine. In the mean time I have been using the onboard sound from my motherboard. The drivers for the audigy are still on my computer. I have been getting blue screens with the “drive irql not less or equal” messages and when I play games such as witcher and HOI 3 both crash to the desktop. Is it possible that the motherboard sound “card” is causing these crashes because there is a conflict between it and the video card or is it because I have a blank slot where my audigy used to be but the drivers are still installed? Hi everyone I am having problems with the sound card on my ACER PC and I asked the people I brought my 2nd hand ACER Veriton 3500v from what they did to the PC re formatting the HDD and loading it up with WIN XP Pro again. Apparently they used a program called KIlldisk that wrote 0?s to the HDD before they formatted it? They formatted it in FAT32 then loaded the op system.

As the sound card etc was working o?k prior to them doing this would it have been possible that using KIlldisk has turned ?off ? some how the sound card etc? And if so how can I turn it back on? I keep getting a msg Multimedia Audio Controller not loaded code 28 can you help.

A:On-board audio or dedicated sound card - pros and cons

It's not quite the same as switching from on-board video to a discrete video GPU card, but it's the best comparison that I can think of. At least with the video you can see a significant difference. With audio it's a little harder to hear a difference, especially since you need a good speaker set to reference from. If your CPU is a little down in power then you'll notice some improvement in games too. A lot of the crackling and poorly addressed effects will be cleaned up. For me, I was also able to hear other players further in a map than I could with on-board audio.

One thing to add to this brand of card that you're buying: The manufacture makes different audio profiles available in their software for this card. These profiles are designed for entertainment, games, etc... Enabling or disabling a profile might make the difference if EAX is available in-game or not. If it does not come with the manufacture's software, I would suggest looking for a disc ISO since this software would be necessary to configure the card for these options. And the updates at the manufacture's website might be incomplete.

I have an asus A8n-sli board with the Nforce4 chipset. I have creative x-fi xtreme music installed on the board and the sound works fine in XP.

The issue is that the when I try to install the drivers it keeps telling me that there is no compatible hardware installed. In device manager it shows an audio device but no available info for it. I tried the reinstall method and moving it from one slot to the other.

I am running 4 gb of ram, W7 64bit and do have the onboard audio turned off via the bios.

I have tried installing drivers for the nforce4 chipset but they will not work, Is that the issue? Are there a compatible set for this, I have tried the xp64 and vista 64 drivers but with no luck.

A:Sound Card not recognized in W7

Sorry, don't have a solution ... but just to show you that you're not alone, I have an ASUS nForce 4 board too, installed Win7 64-bit, and like you, could not install my audio drivers because it said there was no card connected.

I checked with the card vendor and they said (1) I had the latest drivers and (2) the drivers should work.

I removed 64-bit, installed 32-bit (and yes, I have a 64-bit, dual-core processor), and everything worked OK. Sound card detected, drivers loaded, audo config app works fine.

So, maybe there's a more general problem with ASUS nForce 4 boards, WIn7 64-bit, and plugin sound cards.

Interesting that WinAmp isn't having a problem!

I guess I'd remove the Sound Card, and Boot the sytem.

Go to Device Mgr and see if the Sound Card's entry(s) are still there.

If yes, Remove them.

Shutdn the system.

Reinstall the Sound Card and re-boot.

When the Card is found by Windows...install it using the CD if available.

Check Device Mgr, making sure that all entries are correct.

Either go directly to test the Player applications OR re-install them (preferably).

Report back on results.

Perhaps the drivers are bad? Drivers are small programs that lets the hardware communicate with windows.

Hello I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (SP1)

The problem is that my sound card is not recognized. I try to install the latest drivers from Creative, but the installation says "Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system. Please ensure that your product is properly installed before running this Setup program.
Setup will exit."

I tried switching the card to a different PCI slot, but no difference. I disabled onboard audio in BIOS. The card is not even showing up in device manager. The card was working earlier today on my previous machine (Asus P5Q-E). Running out of ideas here, anyone got any?

The motherboard is Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 and the sound card is Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. Old card I know but there are official drivers for it on Win7.

Thanks for your time

The motherboard has on-board sound. This is in the bios under something like "PCI Devices". It is not uncommon for this to fail over time. Install a simple PCI sound card and disable the on-board audio device

Hello I m back I have two hard drives and both of them have Windows XP installed on them I cannot access my account on the bigger hard drive nor can I for some reason reinstall it on either of them due to a problem with Card Not Sound Recognized? Being the bios or whatever So I m currently running with the small hard drive which still works and all but it seems as though my sound card is not being recognized For example I have my speakers plugged in and nothing is going through I also cannot edit the volume of sound and when I hit back space or a message appears like someone contacting you on messenger my computer makes a sound as if I have no sound card On my big hard drive my sound card works perfectly I m confused as to why it works on one and then doesn t work on the other Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks nbsp

A:Sound Card Not Being Recognized?

Are your sound card drivers installed on the secondary hard drive? If not find them and install them again.

As for getting your normal OS working again, you should be able to run the installed from windows no matter if the bios is recognizing the disc or not. If you provide more information on the problems with the bios and other hard disk, I would be glad to help you with that.

My HP Pavilion 502n has on-board video. The computer turns on but will not display anything on the monitor- it'll just put the monitor to sleep. I tried 2 monitors and it has the same affect on both. I tried both monitors on another computer and they both work fine on it, which makes me think that the on-board video unit has failed.
how can I disable on-board video using "device manager" when I can' t see the display? I'd like to replace it with a video card- do I just install a sound card anyway and hope that it'll work?

Thanks.

A:Replacing failed on-board video w/ sound card on HP Pavilion 502n

You don't replace a graphics with a sound card. They're two different animals. Sure, you can install a sound card but you'll only get sound out of it. You replace graphics with a graphics card.

I can drop into CMOS and disable Audio Codecs for Realtek AC'97 but should I also remove the Realtek AC'97 driver from Device Manager? Are there any more drivers that I would have to remove?

Also, an independent sound card plugged into an on-board-designed mother board wouldn't require any other wiring attachments to the DVD CD drive or motherboard, would it? I could just plug the sound card into a PCI slot let 'er go?

Hello.
Got a Dell Inspiron 1150, had to reformat the HD.' Installed windows XP pro, and I have no sound. I go to control panel and I see no sound card at all... Strange, Reboot and in Bios there is a sound card ( Sigmatel 9750- C-Major Audio)
Go back to Dell support, download the correct( and only one file there) audio driver.
Try to install and get a message that there is no sound card found... Go back to manually install sound card and rely on the file I downloaded for the .inf file, and get a sound card installed, but with a yellow ex sign on it. Try to install drivers again, and get the same error... No card installed...
Anyone can help?

One of the computers where I work stopped playing any audio and when you try an error message pops up as follows:
“Error: Windows can’t play this file!
Windows Error text: All wave devices that can play files in the current format are in use. Wait until a wave device is free, and then try again..”

I checked the drivers for the audio card and they are completely gone. I tried updating them and downloading a program to install drivers for me but I cannot find a good/free one. Thank you for your help!

Moving my old PC stuff to a newer PC - both operating WinXP SP3, and when I moved the Sound Blaster Card and went to install drivers - driveware software from Creative indicated that hardware was not found. I noticed in Device Manager that Creative SB Live! Series (WDM) and Creative SB Live! Gameport were installed under the Sounds, Video, and Game Controllers tab, so I am puzzled why the Creative software didn't recognize it. I would like to us this card and install associated software, but can't seem to - any help would be appreciated. Also, if yu require additional info, just let me know. Thanks.

Alright I completely formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows XP Pro and have everything up and working fine except for my sound card. I have the original cd the card came with and it was working fine before the format/install. Here are a few bits of info.

I have already run the sound blaster cd and installed..everything on it...and it just wont get recognized.

In the device manager/sound, video, game controllers. There is..
Creative SB Live! series
Creative Game Port

System Information/components/Sound Device

Name: Creative EMU10K1 Audio Processor (WDM)
Manufacturer: Creative Technology Ltd.
status OK
driver: c:\windows\system32\drivers\ctaud2k.sys

When I go to controlpanel/sounds and audio devices it just always says no sound device, I also went into bios and turned off the audio on the motherboard already.

Any ideas or help would be great....

If anyone can steer me in the right direction, I would appreciate it greatly. My PC does not recognize this card when I put it in any of my PCI slots. It says there is a sound card in but it doesn't know what type it is, it simple says there is a sound card installed and nothing more. I read this card requires PCI 2.1 slot type and my PC manufacturer's website states my mobo is "PCI Master 2.2", so I presume this means it is compatible. BTW, it defaults to the internal speaker when I install it (the one that makes those crude Apple IIc beeps) and my PC doesn't do that with my SB0090 and that is much older. Any suggestions on getting this to work? Thanks to everyone for taking their time to read this.

What would cause a sound device to be listed as working properly in the "device manager" utility but no sound device is available in "sounds and audio devices" utility?

Also, Windows will not boot in normal mode. It freezes on the load screen.
It works fine in Safe mode with networking, which I am using now. Thanks.

A:Sound card working properly but not recognized!

Since you can boot into safe mode...I would do so and remove the sound device drivers. I would then see if XP is able to boot normally.

I would do that based on the premise that they are corrupt and incapable of working properly.

Device Manager cannot be relied upon to provide clues that driver files may be damaged...but the fact that the system boots into safe mode but not normally gives a clue that it is a driver problem. Might as well start with the sound drivers.

What sounds and audio devices might you be referring to?

The key question is whether the sounds function is working properly (e.g., you actually hear), not what some utility reflects.

You bought DDR400 so I'd say your RAM is not supported by your motherboard. Also, the voltage standard for your motherboard is 2.5 volts. Your RAM needs 2.6 volts although it should still run if your motherboard supported it in the first place. You might be able to bump up the voltage in the BIOS but I can't say for sure.

Hi,
I have a PC-Chips M848 ALU V2.1 motherboard with an onboard soundcard, C-media CMI9739A 6 channel audio.
I have downloaded the latest driver from the PC chips website, as the one that came on the CD didn't work at all. I also have the AC97 Realtek drivers installed.

My problem is that if I try & play an MP3 or a DVD the sound gets really jumpy or if it's missing part of the track out. It sounds like when there is a thumbprint on a CD & it skips over it.

Now I'm new to this so it might be something simple like it is set up to play through 6 speakers or something & as I only have 2 that is the problem, if it is great but can someone tell me how to do this. If not can someone suggest some other solutions??

I'm running XP Pro.

thanks,

A:on board sound problems - sound keeps jumping / dropping music.

Onboard audio can use alot of system resources and you will get audio artifacts when there are programs running in the background, system memory is low or you have an under powered processor. Win XP Pro has alot of crap running in the background. What are your other system specs? You may want to think about getting a sound card. Good ones run $20-30.

Why would speakers sound scratchy, but headphones and external cabled speakers sound OK? I have a Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional.

236GB used, 214GB free space
Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor
64 bit OS
4GB memory

The built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset sound is good. According to the Dell Support Assist utility, the sound card is "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
Microphone test -- earphone playback is OK, on-board speaker terrible.

A:Why would on-board speakers sound scratchy but headphones sound OK?

You Dell Studio 1555 laptop uses IDT HD audio driver for the built in laptop speakers.
The ATI HD audio driver is only used if an HDMI connection to an HDMI monitor (with an HDMI audio/video cable) is used.

possibly a driver conflict with IDT audio, built-in speakers may be malfunctioning or dirty (gotta have them repaired if it's a hardware problem and not a software problem). just listing the possible causes for the scratchy sound.

A:On board sound gone after installing Sound Blaster Audigy Fx...

Hi: See if your BIOS has an onboard audio setting. If it does, it may have automatically gone to disabled when you installed the add on video card. Check the options you have for the onboard audio setting. If it is on Auto or Disabled, change it to Enabled, save the setting where you made the change, and again when you exit. The sound should work on both devices then. And if the audio card doesn't work with the onboard audio setting on enabled, then change it to Auto if the onboard setting had been on disabled.

ok you will need to download this program because there are a few motherboards that use that

http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_147.zip

than after you have downloaded it right click on the file and hit extract or it might say unzip than open the extracted folder if it doesn't do that automatically than run cpuz. after its finished loading look at the top and click the tab that says mainboard than write down the information it says about your motherboard than post it here and that should make it easier to tell you which is better.

Hi,
The on-board surround sound on my XPS 8700 will not work properly.
When the configuration sound test is run the front speakers both give the little melody correctly, but all of the other speakers give a little dink sound like a cracked bell.  The surround sound in the game I play the most only seems to work with the front speakers.
My Creative Inspire T7700 is admittedly quite old (12 yrs) but I don't think that is the problem.

I have sound connected to my DVD-ROM but there is only one sound cable. Is there a way to split it and put it to the CD-RW as well?
Ruth

A:on board sound

Yes, you can buy a splitter that has two ends on the one side. Generally there is more then one Audio plug on a motherboard, commonly labeled CD and AUX. There may also be a smaller white plug on the motherboard that matches some ends on the CD audio cables.

Now that said, that cable is only used with analog audio. If you use digital input you don't need that cable at all. If you have XP then it should work without any settings. In Windows 9X you can set the audio to digital in Multimedia settings in the Control Panel or in CD-ROM properties in Device Manager. There's also a Digital Input option in most players like Windows Media Player.

Greetings all kind souls out there. I started to look on my own but finally decided it would take forever and I still might not figure it out so... I'm asking for help from anyone out there who might take a fancy to give some good advice. I've had some great advice from this forum in the past so I'm certainly hopeful.

The Creative Labs PCI 128 sound card I have is a fairly old sound card but is it still better than the on-board sound which is on my mother board. The motherboard manual says "AC 97 Audio Codec" compliant with the "AC 97 2.2" specs.... supports "18-bit ADC and DAC". This of course means absolutely nothing to me.

Any comparison thoughts concerning these two sound possiblities? One better for computer games? Thanks, as usual.

Sincerely,
R. Smith

A:Is on-board sound better than CR PCI 128?

Well we would need to know a little about he motherboard and such. The Codec is one thing, but is it only 2 channel or maybe 5 or 6 channel. My mother board uses the AC97 codec also but is 6 channel sound.

Hopefully, I am in the right forum for this question. If I were to get Lan or Sound on board, and someday it happens to go haywire on me, would I be able to replace with a card? Planning on building my first real soon, and trying to learn all there is to know, before hand.

Yes, both the onboards can be disabled and replaced by add on cards.

I am currently trying to run Audacity to record from our sound mixing board to a laptop that has Vista.

On playback, it sounds like the person is talking into a tin can and there is lots of hiss and pops on the line.

When I recorded onto my old laptop with XP, using the same software and levels, I get a perfectly clear signal.

There is no specific line in on the laptop, so I am using the mic input for this. Someone suggested getting an external USB sound card for this, but I don't know what to get and what is Vista compatible.

We should have the option to chose whichever operating system we want put on our pcs and not have to live with whatever they dump on us.

Can anyone help?

A:Recording from a sound board

I'm currently running Vista 64 bit and I also use Audacity.... if you check the audacity website there is a page with instructions on how to set up "what you hear" recording. I did it once a year ago and can;t completely remember all the things to do but it should still be up on the Audacity web site.

You won;t need an external Sound card or any fancy new sound card.

I had this prob years ago and left a message on TSG and was advised to post back witjh the board ID and was directed to a site that gives info about the board along with where to go for drivers.
I have his board ID but (being an ageing rocker) cannot for the life in me remember the site.

Just put together the first system using a Duron 600 and the onboard sound is cutting out something fierce.

The only card installed is the ATI Expert98 8MB.

After installing 98SE, I installed the Via 4in1 4.24, then the Sound card codecs.

There does not appear to be any IRQ conflicts in device mgr, deleteing card and re-installing did no good.

I've searched around a bit looking for a solution, and I'll continue to look, there's gotta be an easy fix?

Bought a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card to upgrade from my mobo on-board sound. Installation check program says everything is installed properly, but when it runs a sound check, I get no sound from speakers or headset connected to the sound card however sound is still coming out of on-board system. I guess my question is ..How do I disable the on-board sound system?

A:How do you disable on-board sound?

Make sure in device manager (right click on my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager) that the on board sound card is disabled and bettere yet uninstall the driver for it. Then restart your computer and go into your BIOS setup. Disable the sound card in your BIOS, it should be under onbaord PCI... I will try and get more info. Then exita nd save BIOS. That should do it.

Im dealing with a Asus Pundit-R pc and this type has the intergrated sound , now im running Windows 98 se. I installed the sound drivers that came with the disk from Asus and everything works like the sound, but I keep getting a BSOD "Fatal Exception Errror" and the error is the sound driver. Now even though the disk does have 98 drivers for it, the pc is does recommend running windows 2000/XP for optimal performance. So my next step is I disabled the on-board sound, and install a pci sound card, now that installs fine but you hear no sound at all, so its either keep running the on-board sound and get "bsod", or run the sound from the pci card and get no "bsod" and no sound. Can someone please guide me thru' this procedure? I know as far as "press Del key on start up" & look for "on board sound" then disable, but would feel happier with a step by step guide.
Regards,

A:Disabling on board sound win 7 64 bit

You would boot into Setup (Bios) at bootup you should see a message to press a certain key to enter Setup, for many that is the Del key. Once in the Bios, look for Onboard Audio, using your Arrow key, choose to Disable it. If you cannot find it. then Boot the computer and go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager open the Sound, Video and Game Controller highlight the Audio Controller, Right click it and choose Disable

I think it happened when I started messing with audio drivers when I was trying to get my headset working, I may have un-installed the wrong driver or changed something then both the front and back audio jack would not work.

I have installed the audio divers from the motherboard manufacturers.

I have attached several screenshots from the sound panel device manager and the manufacturer’s website.

my mobo is a ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 and it came with a driver cd

ive tried installing the sound driver manually but it says
the audio driver files do not support your computer hardware

is this because i already have Xfi drivers installed and need to install the onboard drivers first or is there a problem?
thanks

A:on board sound problem

You've got to have one or the other. On Board Sound or Sound Card.
I've been down this road before. When you decide which one, you will have to flush out all the drivers for the one you don't want and do a "fresh" install of sound drivers for the one you want.
In other words: Been there done that

Hey all,

On my studio pc, I've installed a new rack mounted firewire audio interface in the studio. On the other drives (windows 8.1) the interface has installed perfectly but on the xp drive, although the drivers etc have been installed, once set, it works perfectly with the new outboard soundcard.

However, whenever I reboot to the xp drive, xp always reverts back to the on-board realtek sound card. I set the default to the new interface (a Presonus Firestudio Project) but every reboot it defaults to the realtek.

The motherboard is a P5N-E SLI if that helps.

How can I stop this happening so the new interface is the default?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Onboard sound, as with onboard video, is inferior to a good card. If you don't want any bells or whistles, and don't care about high quality sound, then it should suffice. However, for as you say, $40, you can pick up a Audigy which will give you a worlds difference on sound from onboard.

Hello,

I have a Dell Vostro 1510 and just got a pair of Sennheiser RS120.. Only 2 things suck about it. Sound volume/quality isn't what I expected because of the on board sound I believe. And the "open" design makes it so that when it's on max anyone near by can hear it clearly which is obnoxious on my part and also restricts me from having it as loud as I would like anyway.

Regardless, I would like to solve the quality issue as I am currently playing .FLAC audio and it just doesn't sound like what it should be. If anyone knows a cost effective solution or external sound card that will bless my ears at least to the full potential of these wireless headphones I would greatly appreciate it. I am reading reviews but was hoping someone here could let me know about a more productive, effective solution!

Thanks.

I have purchased a new PC with onboard sound (RealTek HD Audio). I would like to replace it with the EMU 0404 card I already had. What is the best way to do this? Most searches on the web have come up with the advice that you have to disable it in BIOS/Periperals. But is it best to do anything else first?
1. uninstall the software in Add orRemove Programs (which means I wouldn't be able to reinstall it as there wasn't a disk provided)?
2. Disable or Uninstall the driver in the Device Manager?
3. Make any changes in the registry?

Off the top of my head, the only suggestion I can make to try to narrow this down a little further is to run the DirectX diagnostic tests (DXDIAG) to see what else you can determine about this problem. Make SURE that you save a full report, so you'll have it as a baseline diagnostics record. That way, you can compare the results of any changes you make with follow-up tests after you make changes to your settings.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who hates WMP; I still use Winamp 2.81 on most of my Windows rigs, though I did install Winamp 5.07 on one system recently, just to see the difference from the older version.

Also, open the Control Panel, and check the Sounds and Multimedia Properties for your hardware. Check ALL the Audio tab settings, including the Volume and Advanced option buttons (start with the Sound Playback settings). Check the balance sliders under the Volume options. Check the "Use only preferred devices" box, then check the Hardware tab. Examine the properties of your devices, especially the properties for your Yamaha CD/RW; put a check-mark in the "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" box (if it isn't checked already), then run DXDIAG a second time, and compare the effects your changes have made.

Good luck; as a dedicated headphone user, this is one area I have little experience with, though I'm sure others will be able to provide more specific advice.
