Good drive failed hard disk test

Q: Good drive failed hard disk test

My computer was working fine, it turned off fine. Later when I turned it back on it wouldn't go past the black windows logo screen with the loading bar. Then every time I turned it on I got the improper shut down screen. None of the safe mode or configuration options would run. I tried all the boot options and none would work. Tried using start up disks and couldn't get repair or anything to work. Got a message that windows couldn't find mass storage device and HDD test had read failure. Everything pointed to a bad drive. For the heck of it I tried windows reinstall and it worked, even tho I lost my info. So I don't understand why a working drive would suddenly become inoperable when it's really not. What would do this? Don't want it to happen again

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You can read a lot of conversations here at TSG to give some answers.... There are many ways a computer can go bonkers, especially the age of components...

Hard Drive Diagnosis Test- Long Dst Test Failed on my Laptop. But my laptop is booting properly but everytime it hangs during working, I have to hard reboot it every time.I am suspecting that, bad memory sector causing the issue I have tried Seatools for DOS to repaire those sector , but my hard drive is not detecting in that tool. Failure ID- RLNG40-7KG845-XD7V6K-618703 Do I suppose to replace the hard drive or it is repairable in HP service center ????

After using the system Recovery DVD error msg. response "hard disk not exist" what does that mean.

A:hard disk test failed

Please tell us a little more about your computer. It sounds like either the hard drive has failed, or the hard drive has come loose from the motherboard. It is also possible that it is a problem with the motherboard itself.I am assuming you are running the Hard Drive Test from BIOS. Have you tried placing the hard drive in a different SATA port on the motherboard? It could be that just the SATA it is currently connected to has failed. You could also place the hard drive in another computer and seeing if it gets recognized then, indicating it was a problem with the motherboard (in which case that computer is pretty much screwed. Contact your manufacturer to see if it's under warranty and if they'll replace it).If neither of these work then most likely the hard drive is shot. You'll pretty much have to either get the hard drive replaced by the manufacturer or buy a new one. One last thing, have you tried running system recovery off of the Vista Installation Discs?

A:hard disk ide dps test failed and not booting.

Hi dionrodrigues,
Is your PC new and have added any new components to it recently (RAM in particular)? The error code you are getting usually appears when there is new RAM installed. If you could upload the BSOD it would be helpful. Another thing to try would be reseating your RAM.
As for your hard drive, I would suggest connecting it with different cables and in a different port. Afterwards, you could consider running a brand specific diagnostic tool on the disk to check its health. There are third party software solutions to be found online, however the once from the manufacturer provide the most accurate results as they are developed for such drive and know the firmware best. You can upload a screenshot of the SMART status after running an extended test. It would be best if can test the drive on a different PC with different SATA cables.
If you manage to access the drive I strongly recommend doing a backup prior to any testing just to be on the safe side.
If the drive has bad sectors it is recommended to change it, or if you use it Ė not to trust it with important information. Having regular backups is always a good idea
Keep me posted,

My 2 TB WD MyPassport Ultra has stopped working. In disk management, it shows unallocated and when i try to initialize it, it says an I/O error has occured. This hard disk was bought only 20 days ago from amazon.

I tried inserting it on different computers, through different cables etc.

I read a lot of threads on this forum on similar(same) problems. I performed WD Lifeguard test, and my hard disk failed both quick test and extended test. What should I do?

The suspected cause is that it was being used on a computer when the system showed blue screen of death. It has not been working since then.

A:Hard Disk not recognised; Unallocated; Lifeguard Test failed

If hope that you had a back up of your stuff or there was nothing important on that drive. You have to contact Amazon and get a replacement. The BSOD did not cause the problem, the problem caused the BSOD. There is a surprisingly large number of HDs that are corrupt when purchased. You should not have a problem trying to exchange it. I do wish you good luck and sorry about your situation.

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Let others know this reply was helpful by clicking the Accept as Solution button. You can also show your appreciation by clicking the Thumbs Up. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you. On some Toshiba's I've worked on, including my own Tecra, I press Escape and Function 1 to get a boot menu and with an XP CD in, there's a three second only window in which to "press any key" when the prompt appears. Are you seeing that prompt when you boot from CD? You might also benefit from formatting that hard disk in the other machine if you already started to install on it.

Please help.

A:External hard drive not working after failed disk scan

I think first you need to check for possible drive failure before trying anything else, since if does turn out to be drive failure that's end of story -- new drive required. Download the Diagnostic Software (installable Windows version) from the drive manufacturer's website. The links are here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

I'm buying a new HD. The OEM version of Windows 7 was pre-installed by HP on the laptop. So I have no disks. I do have the 3 Recovery Disks my wife created when we bought the machine. But when I was trying to revive the harddrive one of the recovery screens said Windows 7 had to be already installed on the hard drive for that to work.

So, is there anyway for me to get Windows 7 on the new HD short of buying a new copy? The laptop does have a sticker on it with a product key.

A:Windows 8 Disk errors but disks test good?

I don't see that diagnostics file or the admin events list uploaded.

Does Disk1 contain the volume Boot? If not, then try disconnecting Disk1 to see if that improves things. You also may want to run CHKDSK /R /F on the disk that volume Boot is on.

Have you looked for misbehaving explorer.exe add-ons? Use ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows and disable all non-Microsoft extensions to see if that fixes the problem.
Have you seen if it's a DPC Latency issue (just a guess on my part): How to Diagnose and Fix High DPC Latency Issues with WPA (Windows Vista/7/8) - Sysnative Forums
Have you tried a Process Monitor capture to see what the system is doing when it slows down (these logs are very, very large!): Process Monitor
Another guess is to run DISM (aimed at the "scanned online" portion of the last error message):

Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:

Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

If the problem is fixable, you can use this command to repair it (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after typing it:

Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

The actual error that you're seeing says that the operation was retried. With just 3 errors, I'd suspect that there was a subsequent Information event that stated it was tried/retried successfully (but haven't looked at any other systems for this myself). I'd imagine that it would take many, many of these errors in order to see a significant decrease in performance (a freeze) - so I wonder if this is a symptom of the problem, or if it's unrelated?

Booting from disk on a UEFI system is a bit trying at times.
If it's an OEM system that came originally w/Win8, then try disabling Secure Boot and enabling anything like "Legacy boot". I have no experience with loading Win8 on a system with UEFI other than OEM systems.
At work (on BIOS systems) we usually switch from AHCI to SATA/ATA/Legacy/etc in order to run Seatools on systems that don't see the hard drive (I prefer the in Windows test or a test in Windows PE/RE- as I wonder about damage to the boot stuff if I accidentally boot with AHCI not enabled - so I don't use it myself).

*************************************************
Looking at both topics, there's not even a similarity in the storage controllers.
That leaves (as you've stated) - Win8, W-D Black HDD's, and LogMeIn

To rule out LogMeIn - you've gotta uninstall it to see if that fixes things. Use something like TeamViewer temporarily (if needed).
To rule out the HDD's - you'll have to install Win8 on another (non-Black edition) hard drive - preferably a non-Western Digital drive and see if that stops the problems. If using 2 of them, then disconnect the other one while testing.
To rule out Win8 - you'll have to install another OS (?Win7?) and see if that stops the problems.

I lean towards blaming LogMeIn because it's the easiest to test and it has older drivers. These drivers work in the kernel space and can (fairly easily) interfere with other drivers/kernel components.

My computer is an hp Pavilion Entertainment PC dv2000. Since I had a boot-up problem (hangs after login with cursor arrow on blank screen), I did a system restore to an earlier date, but the problem still persists. So I did a hard disk self test on BIOS. It comes up with a "Test Status #1-07 Fail" almost right away, and then stops the testing (it is supposed to take 129 minutes).

I have been trying to get information on this message, but I have had no luck. Can anybody help me?

It is rather urgent, unfortunately :-(

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

Pretty weird stuff you got going on - media player starting like that. It might take less time to put in a new drive and make a fresh OS build than to ferret out way this stuff is happening. But if you want to play with and learn from the situation that you have, Process Explorer might reveal what is launching media player.

Hi,

I recently ran a scheduled diagnostic test of my PC with the manufacturer's diagnostic software. I received two error messages and the advice to promptly replace my hard drive. The first message was Failed (Error code: WHD20-1VR) and the second was Failed (Error code: WHD16-T57). The apply to Targeted Read test and Smart Short Self Test respectively.

So I ran Chkdsk for the C: drive and received no error messages.

Which is correct and what should I do about it? The error message won't go away on the software.

Thanks for helping.

A:Question: Failed Targeted Read Test and SMART Short Self Test

CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.

You should replace the drive.

Hi there first off I wasn't sure where to post but my guess is it's a driver problem so that's why I started the post in Drivers section So here's the brief story I'm presently running Windows and I'd like to switch to Windows Vista bit I have both Vista Home Premium and Vista Business however the two CD's won't read neither while logged on windows or when I try to boot the disk after bios booting yes I set CD DVD drive as first in booting sequence I'll say in advance I deleted the windows old folder so now I can't revert to Vista that way I would say it's the CD DVD drive but I've inserted other CD's DVD's and they were read completely with no trouble As well as I'd say it's my Vista disks DVD good is disk reading, Vista installation drive not DVD AND disk that are bad but the business disk was sealed in the original quot paper cover container quot therefore there are no scratches or damage to the disk I want to also mention that windows update is up to date I'm running on a Dell Studio any thoughts on what might be preventing me from reading and installing Windows Vista

A:Vista installation disk not reading, DVD drive AND DVD disk is good

I want add that another thought of mine is that the disk won't read until the hard drive is completely wiped, but I'm not sure if that's how Vista installation disks are configured and if wiping my hard drive will help..

I was running Win XP which finally failed and I was able to enter in safe mode (only, no networking) and ran all the tests I could think of. Hard drive is ok and so I attempted to repair WinXP from the installation CD. However, the PC failed to shut down and restart so I eventually force closed it. Now it won't even load past the initial black windows screen, don't even get the option of going into safe mode.

Is there any way I (or someone) could access the hard drive to retrieve the data? I guess I could reinstall the OS but don't want to do that yet as I'll definitely lose the data.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Win XP failed, repair failed -- can I access hard drive?

Sure, there are many ways. Depending on what you want in the end decides how to proceed.

If you have a lot of space free on the drive, you could boot off a linux dvd and create a new partition. You'd have to shrink the existing, then make a new one. Then you could just copy over the data from the old one to the new one. Then reinstall windows onto the old partition, and copy your stuff back (then delete the partition and expand the remaining to fill the rest of the space).

You can also just boot off a linux disk and copy it to a thumb drive or whatever.

Or you could remove the hard drive and place it in another computer.

Also, I'm not convinced you lose the data if you install Windows again. I'm pretty sure you can install without formatting the drive. Your programs won't work, but it shouldn't overwrite any of your data. This is a non-ideal solution though.

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

I need to test a hard drive to see if I can use it in a laptop. The drive is not installed anywhere. What utility should I use and how should I connect it to another PC that is functioning so I can test it. The drive is a Hitachi drive.

A:Need to test Hard drive

If you don't have one already, get an external HDD dock with a connection appropriate for the PC you want to connect to (such as USB 3.0, USB 2.0, or eSATA), plug in the drive, then try to see it on the PC you are using. You may need to format it if it hasn't been already (you didn't state if the drive is new or used). Once you can see the drive, use a program like Speccy (the free version will work quite well) to check the drive condition.

It always restarted when trying to boot Then the next day disk checking was performed when I booted it and it worked for a while until it crashed again This happened about times Later I either got a stop error when I selected disable automatic restart on system failure but i was able to use safe mode A short while later even safe mode didn t work Either the screen remained blank whenever I pressed F or I got the error quot Failed to load operating system quot or the error quot Disk Error Occured quot I decided to install a fresh copy of xp I formatted it and reinstalled After that I still got the message quot Failed to load Operating System quot so I installed xp on my D hard drive and evrything worked fine Right now I have xp and some other files on my D and on my C WIndow and a few other files I put on it When I boot my computer it gives me the option of selecting from copies of quot Micorosft WIndows XP quot One of them is the D one Right now when I tried to boot I got quot Failed to Load Operating System quot error again When I unplugged my computer and replugged it i was prompted for disk checking skipped and it worked fine again So I m wondering if this is because my hard disk failed or for some other reason If my hard disk did fail then do I have to remove it from my computer or do I just have to leave it empty and not use it nbsp

A:Has my Hard Disk Failed?

Yes it could be failing, what make is the drive, it is best to get the manufacturers diagnostic utilities and run them as they can mask some of the bad sectors sometimes. Also you could try writing zero's to the drive using Darik's Boot and Nuke from HERE.

Hi all,
As you probably know I am new :-) and like I said in the title think my hard disk has failed... I was putting Linux over windows 8.1 and then it froze after wiping the disk and now I get this... Image is taking forever so it say No Bootable Device Found

A:I think my hard disk has failed....

You can download the DOS based Seatools from Seagate and run them against the hard drive.  These diagnostics are excellent and will give you good information about the condition of that drive.

Good luck.

I have bought a new 40G HD from a local Computer super market and installed Win2K and Office 2K and have been using for sometime.

Then it crashed. I used a Maxtor utility to do a Low Level format on it. Then reinstalled Win2K and Office 2K but it failed after I completed the installation.

I tried doing the LLF and the installation the second time. It failed. I tried doing the LLF and the installation the third time. And it failed again.

Is there a way I can rescue this hard disk?

I aint concerned about the data. Just the HD.

Many Thanks.

Why would you want to put your data on a hard drive that's failing? Buy a new one.

When I start my pc it stops at the start in the black ones. (the one with the bios at the start) Hardisk failed appears when I press f1,f8 and others then it is askin for a system disk. Boot from disk press any key etc. on top of it appears secondary ide 80 connector not installed. (something like that I forgot what exactly appeared but I think youíve got it). Iíve checked the connections already inside but they are all right. What is the cause of it. Thanks.

A:Help!!! Hard disk failed???? Why..

Who is the manufacturer of your disk ?

You may be able to download some hard disk checking utilities from the Manufacturers site.
These are usually in the form of a boot up floppy, that will load some tools to check the drive.

Depends on the make/model of your drive. Western Digital has an excellent little utility to check THEIR drives. Do you know what kind of drive you have? You may need to open the computer and have a look on the drive. Then go to the drive's manufacture's web site and see if anything is offered.

How to test a laptop hard drive

I am trying to upgrade my older laptop hard drive but my comp doesn't seem to recognize that it is there. Could this be because: 1) It is a bad drive 2) the ide connector is not compatible (shouldn't any ide connector work?) 3)the drive is not compatible with my laptop 4) some other reason.

The hard drive is a IBM Travelstar 4.78 G
The laptop is a Micron Trek Transport II

Is there a way to test the drive in the laptop? I'm guessing not if the laptop can't even detect it. Does that mean the comp isn't even reading it, or it could be bad? Ugh.

A:No hard disk detected or has failed

Howdy @Fraser11?, Welcome to the HP Support Forums.   I gather that since replacing the power supply in your Pavilion 500-076ea that your hard disk is no longer detected.   I am confident that I will be able to help you work towards a solution, and I ask only that you pay it forward. When we resolve the issue, I'd like for you to kindly mark the applicable post as Accept as Solution so that others experiencing the same or similar issue can find what worked for you. Please use the Replacing the Power Supply in HP and Compaq Desktop PCs document as a checklist to ensure that nothing was missed when you replaced the power supply.  In my experience, most of the time when this error occurs after replacing the power supply there is a cable that is not connected securely.  Please let me know the results.

A:Hard Disk Short DST failed

Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of your g7 series notebook - see Here for a further explanation. Regards, DP-K

p6-2260ea desktop/workstation. You need a new hard drive.  Service Manual The Manual shows how to install a new hard drive. Pages 2-6. It takes a standard 3.5 inch SATA desktop hard drive.  Post back if you need any more help.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hey guys I was trying to partition my drive using 'Partition Magic ' apparently of the way in it came across bad sectors and aborted saying nothing had been changed Turns out I couldn't even boot my computer after so much for 'nothing changed' right Anyway so I plugged it into this computer as a slave drive It shows up in My Computer but as bytes and when trying to open it it says the drive is corrupted So is there any good software? Partitoning Any Failed, Drive recovery Destroyed... good file recovery software that anyone knows of Anything that someone would recommend to me paid or not paid Also as a side note would it be better to format the partition and then try to find my files As far as I know a format doesn't do much except for say the data is avaliable to be overwritten and I heard from a friend that if it's unaddressable it'd be better to format it and then try and look for stuff because while its corrupted part of it is unreadable by any program Thanks

A:Partitoning Failed, Drive Destroyed... Any good recovery software?

Recuva does a good job from what I hear: Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

As for the part about partitioning the drive first. I would try using Recuva first. If it won't let you search for files on it, do a quick format. It does more or less what you described. A full format erases everything.

I've been a fan of Registry Mechanic for years now and have used it on every computer i've had and sometimes on 's i've fixed I have however not installed disk Good registry/hard cleaners it on Windows I don't know if this is the technician in me or what but i'm keeping my as clean as possible Untill I installed Windows I was happily running Vista Ultimate and even installed Tuneup Utilities This was IMO excellent for cleaning my hard disk of unwanted junk and it even cleaned the registry Again i've not installed it on Windows My question is What is the best software for cleaning up your registry amp hard disk Here's what I would like Scenario Install a program run it until Good registry/hard disk cleaners it's finished or until i'm bored Uninstall the program using Windows Add Remove programs This will no doubt leave remnants within the registry amp on the hard disk Solution Run registry a cleaner to find any keys relating to the uninstalled software then run hard disk cleaner to eliminate remnants on the hard disk There are several Uninstall programs available which supposedly do this all in The only thing is after using Perfect Uninstaller Final Uninstaller Your Uninstaller amp Good registry/hard disk cleaners Tuneup Utilities i find that there are yet still keys amp files left on the hard disk Is it really that difficult to create a piece of software that actually uninstalls a program Open to ideas here

A:Good registry/hard disk cleaners

I used the Wise reg/hdd cleaners in the sticky above for free software. Somehow it made me unable to log on Live Messenger nor reinstall it. I made the grave mistake of not backing up the registry too . Good thing I was about to do a clean upgrade to 7077.

So whatever cleaner you end up using, always backup and check what it's deleting first.

I have got an external segate hard drive that connected to my laptop through USB cable, I doubt that there is a problem, then I decided to test it by using : Segate seatool utility (windows version not dos version) that I have downloaded from segate site.

I can see the external hard drive :

But the test option is unavailable!!!!

Is there any other utility that can test such a USB connected HD or any other barnd ?

I knew that we can connect faulty hard disk directly to the mother and then run the test from CD or floppy, but this is not feasible in my case

A:Segate External Hard Drive How to test it

I am pretty sure that Western Digital's Diagnosis program will be able to do it. If you get an errors, however, the drive is most likely bad. http://support.wdc.com/download/?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3

Hi  My laptop does not fail but it keeps on hangging up. So i ran diagnostics test and it failed the Hard drive optimize DST check. Does this mean that my hard drive is not working properly and i need to replace it or this is  an operating system problem.  Regards

A:Hard Drive Optimized DST test failure

That means the hard drive needs replacement. Is the laptop still in warranty?

Hi Guys I recently installed Vista after having my machine running XP I have WD gb drives that I have both put into external enclosures both with gb partition each BOTH drives worked fine in XP I stress this Now here is the issue One of the drives works fine The other drive is showing up in Computer as quot Local Disk quot but does not recognise any partitions In hard disk managment it says that the disk is in raw format I took the drive into my friends computer who is running XP and the drive is still fine Every file there and completely writable I read an article the following quot The solution to this annoying problem I had it on one PC seems to be to locate and delete the file INFCACHE which may be corrupted and causing the problem To delete this file you will first have to modify its permissions so the users group can access it right-click on the file- gt Properties- gt Security INFCACHE file It s located at C Windows inf scroll down to the file Note to see INFCACHE you must set Windows Explorer to display hidden and system files quot So i tried that will Drive and (this Vista Hard External test you) and it did nothing I have installed all updates nothing To make matters worse I thought a reinstall of the generic driver would be External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you) enough to kick start the new driver cache NOW when i plug the drive in i get quot Windows needs a driver to install this hardware quot FOR AN EXTERNAL HDD MAN WHATS WRONG Vista looks online for the driver but doesn t find anything I even tried to manuely locate the driver by selecting the default driver that windows was using for my External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you) second external harddrive they are exactly the same device afterall Still nothing I know that once I can actualy install the driver I could just format the drive in vista but i m not going to do that It is completly full to do that I would need another drive to backup onto I thought I could try to do a partition recovery on the drive but again I really do NOT want to since there is still a good chance that this will loose my data So Thoughts I think this will test alot of us here Nath nbsp

A:External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you)

Ok , i got the drive installed properly again. So I am back to where I started.

Here is a interesting update, I installed [email protected] Partition Recovery to take a look at the drive. The program doesn't find anything wrong with the drive. In fact, it shows that the drive does have the partition and that there is nothing wrong with it. So I can't even "restore" the partition because the recovery software doesn't see the drive the same way that Vista does (and the drive letters are the same, so active partition reports, "I:\ (Data Backup)" and Windows reports "I:\ Local Disk RAW Format".

Any thoughts from anybody this time....
