Can a SATA hard drive short the power?

Q: Can a SATA hard drive short the power?

I recently aquired a new molex-sata adapter for adding a second HDD to my computer, but when I plugged it in and turned the PC on, it won't power up. Without either hard drive plugged into the power supply, the PC will start but obviously go no further, but with either hard drive plugged in the computer simply won't start.

I've tried with three molex-sata adapters now and none of them will make it work, so I was wondering if it is likely that the new adapter has ruined my hard drive? If not then any tips for fixing it?

Thanks very much

Preferred Solution: Can a SATA hard drive short the power?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

A:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! I finally loaded my window xp media center on my brand new Seagate gb SATA g s transfer rate hard drive series and the next day the computer wont turn on at all dead My thoughts were first the power supply went bad or bad power cable to power supply but after checking all connections and possible options i found out that it was hard drive related I thought it was my hard drive at first because only when the power cable was connected was when the computer wouldnt power up at all and it would shut off if i tried to connect it while computer was running The hard drive also smelled shorting? SATA hard drive cable power like an electrical fire so i SATA hard drive power cable shorting? thought i fried the mother board on the hard drive or it froze on me I sent it back in the Seagate warranty and they gave me a factory repaired unit I used a temporary hard drive WD gb IDE not SATA for the time being with windows xp proffesional on it and worked completely fine no problems at all As soon as i got the new hard drive i found out that the new hard drive didnt fix the problem i had before and in fact it got worse The computer will run but somewhere where the red cable connector meets the hard drive power connector is where it starts smoking and burning up So im thinking it could be the power cable itself because i was using the same SATA power cable as before but im not totally sure yet any suggestions nbsp

A:SATA hard drive power cable shorting?

You can have a defective connector. As a test, use a molex>sata power adapter to connect the sata drive to a standard molex connector ie the same one you used for the ide drive.

Next have you given the sata connector a VERY close inspection with a bright light?

my used hard drive is the IDE power cord interface ( 4-pin). Now the hard drive had bad, and I want to buy a sata power interface. My motherboard has sata interface, but I don't know how many pin the sata hard drive interface to connect the power supply interface. Could I use my old power supply?

A:Sata hard drive power line interface

Hi Rae and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

You can get adapters that will allow you to connect drives with the newer SATA power interface with PSUs that only provide the older Molex connectors. Have a look here: molex sata adapter

Hi there im wondering if there is anything wrong with running three hard rives Power data / SATA Molex hard drive cable question and off the same power source Basically coming form my power supply antec watt im looking to split a single molex into three SATA power cables for the SATA / Molex Power and data cable hard drive question three hard drives b c i have the molex to sata power splitter to do so This way the case can stay a bit neater But am not sure of the reprcussions of doing so if any I can see in the case of a power surge that there might be an issue but i think there would be an issue either way if there was a power surge But other than that i think i should all right i think But id rather ask first and she what ya all say before i go killing three drives with one stone Also with the SATA II data cables that have the metal latch for keeping from coming dislodged can those work on drives that are only sata I Well im sure they would work but would the latch actually make the data cable from coming off easier if the drive isnt meant for it Any suggestions is greatly appreciated nbsp

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

A:sata to usb adapter cable dosen't fit sata hard drive in laptop?

Does the drive have an adapter need to remove to expose the SATA conenctors? I don;t see anything about the Y480 not having a standard SATA drive and laptop and desktop SATA connectors are the same.

Maybe post pictures of both the drive and your SATA cables.

I have 2 IDE HDs installed and added SATA drive lately. SATA runs in IDE mode in CMOS. Problem is, even though SATA drive is recognized by BIOS, Disk Manager, Norton Ghost & System Works, it doesn't show in My Computer, causing problems with saving and opening files. Tried a couple of tricks (changing the drive letter, disconnecting & reconnecting the drive, reformatting etc. ) nothing seems to work. I use this SATA drive for storage and for now I have to drag the files down there manually.
I don't know if it's of any importance, but I have nVidia GeForce graphics card onboard.
Has anyone encountered this kind of a problem ?
Thanks Carl

Laptop will start but will not get as far as the HP logo.Cannot open in safe mode.Ran a system test which gave the following negative result: Hard Drive Shot DST Check: FailedFailure ID : 9GFT7T-82G89A-MFPX61-60T203Background: Laptop is under a year in my possession bought new and unused, within the last week it has shown some signs of slowing down, (firefox not responding just when a new tab is opened).Last night, went to open league of legends, adobe air could not locate files (which is odd as I was on the game 2 hours earlier).Woke up today, turned on the laptop and was greeted by nothing, not even a system logo, now whenever I start it up I just get a black screen.Able to enter bios.

A:Hard Drive Short DST : FAILED

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Kyle, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You can test it further using the SMART test from the BIOS.  When you replace it you should buy one the same size or larger.  If you didn't backup your personal data, you will not be able to retreive it.  You should begin doing this immediately after you replace the drive. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

When I turn it on it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then goes to a blank black screen and after a long while a blue screen that has an 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error Sometimes it starts and says 'Preparing Automatc Repair' but only for a few seconds again then it goes back to the black screen and the same error I saw some tutorials but it involved me getting a bootable CD or USB drive and I tried that and it still won't work It just makes the loading screen stay on a little longer then goes back to the error So I ran a System Quick Check and it failed the Hard Drive Short DST check I don't know what any of this means do I need a new laptop nbsp

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail?

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP. Please see USB - Windows 10 64b Recovery Kit to order the media or contact HP Customer Support to purchase the medai, If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

A retail laptop/mobile 2.5" SATA hard drive can be used.Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Sorry to say files also die with a hard drive. Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.

An issue I had resolved a few months ago has begun occuring again wherein the laptop has difficulty loading things when started up and soon after crashes and has to be restarted I assume this means the hard drive has failed again and so I have no doubts about how to resolve this but I am posting this query to ask Why Why has a laptop I have had for not even a year DST short failure... drive again. Hard check at this point already had the same problem occur twice even with replacing the part that broke the first time I'm willing to assume it's something to do with excessive use as I will admit it is switched for a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. good part of most days often for several hours as I play games on Steam on it I do not currently plan to have the hard drive replaced again as this is clearly an issue that is going to keep occuring the way things are and so I may as well get a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. PC that won't break every time a gust of wind hits it Any information on why this is occuring and how it could potentially be prevented in the future is appreciated particularly if it provides a solution that doesn't involve paying an extortionate amount of money

try using ubuntu

UBUNTU Stand Alone DVD

Note the latest version of UBUNTU needs a DVD to use and boot from

if you only have CDs then you can use an older version, version 10 or 11 from this archive list

It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get any of your data off.

If you have another PC with a DVDwriter and spare DVD
Download the ISO

UBUNTU version 14
For almost all PCs. The following ISO 32Bit image will work on most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.

You can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick

A tutorial is here BUT this is for version 9 - so the start up options are slightly different

click on the image "download ubuntu"
Select a location
then begin download
Save the file onto your PC ? remember where you saved it ? so you can find it again to create the image bootable DVD.

You do NOT copy the ISO file onto a DVD - you have to use the ISO to create a bootable DVD
The DVD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO

If not - use this free program - Choose the option Write image file to disc
Be very careful when installing , as imgburn now includes and installs a load of unwanted programs, so make sure you read each page during the installation and decline them ALL
you can use this stand alone ISO Burner to burn the ubuntu onto DVD

If you need any help burning these images to disk, see the Image Burning Guide, from the ubuntu website.

When the UBUNTU DVD boots - you will see a screen - with Language on the left panel and two option images labelled

== > Try ubuntu
== > Install ubuntu
You can try Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer, directly from this DVD

Use "Try ubunto" ONLY. This option will run from the DVD and "will not" install onto your harddrive
Be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., you have been warned, only use the option "try ubuntu"
Now you should see a UBUNTU desktop
This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working
NOTE: if you only see a black screen - then this is a known issue, and can be resolved by using the following:-
On some hardware configurations, you need to set some kernel parameters for ubuntu to boot or work properly. A common one is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot in to a black screen or corrupted splash, acpi_osi= to fix lcd backlight and other problems.
full details are here

If you press the F6 key, a menu at the bottom will open allowing you to set kernel options with the space bar or enter key. You can close the menu with escape key and resume booting by selecting the option ?try ubuntu without installing? (please note that session does allow you to install ubuntu once you found the kernel options cured your problem).Click to expand...

Bought this Pavilion 17t in December of 2014.  Upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 months ago.  Just last week the laptop got stuck in an automatic repair loop. I tried a hard reboot and that didn't work.  I ran the diagnostics test and got a Hard Drive Short DST check Failed.  Failure ID Q4JF9G-7G189F-MFPV7A-60SU03  Product ID J7B57AV.   Does this mean my hard drive is failing after such a short time?  Is there any solution other than an expensive repair?

A:HP Pavilion 17t Hard Drive Short DST failed

Yes unfortunately it means the hard drive must be replaced. If you are willing to do it yourself, hard drives are probably not as expensive as you fear. We would need your precise model number to provide the correct manual and instructions and likely a video. Since you had Windows 10 installed and activated you can use media downloaded for free direct from Microsoft.

Hello there! My computer recently started rebooting (BSOD) nonstop after turning it on, and it won't even go into Safe Mode. After running a system quick check, I received a message stating Hard Drive Short DST: Failed. With this message, I assume I need to replace my hard drive. I'm not sure where the best place to look for a new laptop hard drive is and how to find one on the HP store. Recovering potentially lost data is also a concern. What's the best way to go about replacing the drive and attempting to recover what was on it?

A:HP envy dv6 Hard Drive Short DST: Failed

You can use any manufacturer's hard drive. HP uses Toshiba, Seagate, etc in their laptops-they do not make their own. Western Digital is a popular replacement. Best Buy, Staples even Wal Mart carries hard drives. Just be sure to get a 2.5 " hard drive for laptops not a 3.5" desktop hard drive.Example: As to recovering files you may be able to do that by installing the old hard drive into a usb enclosure then plug it into usb port of a working machine. If the hard drive has any life left in it you should be able to browse it and copy files over to hard drive of host machne.Example:

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

Hi @Himanshu9001, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it.  When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD.  When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful.  I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot,  but it is not working.  I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console.  I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.

Suddenly my dell latitude d620 stopped working. Message when I boot the laptop is "Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141".

I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.

So is something wrong with the hard drive???

When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.  A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Your model is not one of the easiest to replace hdd on but the Maintenance & Service Guide will help you or your chosen repair shop.

Can anybody talk me through installing a slave drive on my gateway gm5483e motherboard model 945gct-m3 made by elitegroup also known as ECS

A:windows Vista sata hard drive slave drive

It should be as simple as installing a couple of cables. Hopefully you've got a nice flat cable either with the new slave drive, or a spare with the motherboard: it's normally red, but can be other colours, about 1cm wide and 1mm thick. That needs to be plugged in between the drive and one of your SATA slots on the motherboard. They'll normally be black, and unlike most, will have a slight 'L' shape to them. If you get a torch on your motherboard, you should see SATA1 or SATA2 written very close to them. If you've already got a SATA drive, then it should be easy to spot, so just use the second port.

When you start the machine up, go into the BIOS by pressing the appropriate key (it should come up with a screen just after displaying what graphics card you have / testing memory, telling you what key to press - normally F1, F2, F12, Esc or Del),

Then find your way to the 'Boot Order' section (sorry, not sure quite where it'll be for your chipset - but it'll be either on the first screen, or more likely a menu off of it), and make sure that it's still on your CD/Floppy/original drive first and hasn't swapped to your new SATA (it shouldn't have done, but some prefer a SATA drive by default to an IDE).

Any probs or questions, please come back. You'll do fine!

Brand names are irrelevant especially when you are installing your own OS.

That would be the idea if you have it set to boot from disk in the system BIOS. The CD/DVD must have first priority over the HDD to boot.

Hi Is this possible I have tried numerous times on my DVD Windows with Install and 7 Hard Sata IDE ROM Drive Drive PC to install Windows onto my Sata Drive to no avail Yet as soon as I plug in my IDE HD it installs fine I have unplugged all external peripherals USB and internal Card Reader Set my Bios ok as it sees both the Hard Drive and DVD fine Both in the bios and during selection Install Windows 7 with Sata Hard Drive and IDE DVD ROM Drive of hard drive during windows installation Yet when I come to install it it craps out at a random percentage saying cannot read from source or worse yet it crawls so slow through the percentages I really don't think Windows should take hours to get to Yet both the hard drive and dvd are fine and the disc works great on my other PC without the sata drive in I'm pulling my hair out here My motherboard is a Biostar G -M TE with latest bios now what is odd is that I recently updated the BIOS to the latest one so does my problem come from here or was it always going to be a problem on this board Also when I do have win installed on the IDE drive when I plug in ther sata drive inside the whole system goes belly up from freezes when transferring large files to just not seeing the drive Help

One of my favorite tips is to pre-format the HD on another computer to the partitions that you want for the new install on the new computer. Sometimes SATA drivers are required during install either from Disc or USB flash drive containing the correct Sata drivers needed.
Also check your Bios setting for AHCI, SATA, IDE.

What is the power supply like? Make sure the power cables are on a different branch, if possible.

Perhaps the PSU isn't sending out enough power for both drive on a single cable?

Just a guess.

alright, so I have a SATA drive, that came in an external and had to be removed, sort of a long story but this means this HDD is out of warranty, anyways the little plastic piece that supports the flat pins on the HDD has broken off. The pins are still there, a bit bent but still intact. This causes the sata cable to be unstable inside the HDD. Is there a way to fix this without say super glue or scrapping the HDD? Thanks for any help.

I just bought a new 500GB SATA Western Digital hard drive to install into my current build PC. My old hard drive is an 80GB IDE connection.

I installed the device, but receive a message on boot up saying the device was not installed properly. All connections look fine. The PC boots up fine but does not read the new drive. Also, when it is plugged in i cannot access the RAID tools to set the device accordingly. Also i have a SATA DVD-RAM drive plugged in. This disappears while the HD is installed, almost like the HD is blocking that device. Ive tested both MB SATA connections and both cables via the CD-RAM, all of which are fine. I have also downloaded the latest BIOS settings TNA.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know, also just say if more information is needed to help resolve this.

I was getting an unmountable_boot_volume message and was unable to get into recovery mode or do anything so I went and bought a new hard drive (seagate barracuda) which I was planning to install as master and try and recover some stuff off the old drive. The problem I have now is that it appears I have no xp instal disks as Compaq do not issue them (preinstalled on partition - which I can't get to!) Can anyone suggest any help please? I don't have a floppy drive so can't boot from floppys!

All suggestions greatfully recieved!

Hello peeps, im new to the forum so bare with me.

Ive got a computer which has windows XP. It has a SATA hard drive.
It wont switch on. Ive taken it apart and ive come to a conclution that it will only switch on if the hard drive power is unplugged. There is a light on the motherboard which when the hard drive isnt plugged in it is red. I turn the computer on and the bios loads up, but as i plug in the SATA ( Plug and Play) harddrive the computer just shuts down. Ive tried two different power supplys so its not that. Please help because this is really annoying.

A:Sata Hard Drive Help!!!

Hi Tyler and welcome to TSF

Did the SATA drive just fail, or has it been bad all along? It sounds like a short in the power supply connection at the Hard Drive. Check the pins on the HD's power input plug. You may have a bent one. If you have access to another SATA drive, try it.
Try unplugging all other devices on the PC (printer, usb devices, etc) to help unload the power supply and see if that makes a difference.
My SATA drive has a small flat plug for the power supply input. It looks like it could be plugged in upside down with very little force. Make sure your's is plugged in properly.

Hope this helps

does anyone know wat the best Hard drives are out of SATA or IDE. I am stuck on which one to buy?

also 8mb or 16mb cache ? which one do i choose

How do i get the best performance out of the hard drive, for example fo i partition it in 3 for example or do i keep the hard drive as 1 single partition?

hope someone can help

A:IDE or SATA Hard Drive ? ?

Get SATA, it uses a much smaller cable, you don't have to worry about jumper settings. IDE is an old technology and is being phased out, so unless you're on a tight budget, go with SATA

also 8mb or 16mb cache ? which one do i chooseClick to expand...

The larger the cache, the better.

As long as it's 1 single drive, the only real performance you will notice is quicker defrags and formats. If you want performance, get 2 separate drives.

There are however other gains to partitioning. If you separate the OS from your programs and files, if you ever have to reinstall the OS, you will only have to format the small partition that the OS was on

Hi, I currently have my main (and only) hd (western digital 320gb) connected by SATA to SATA port 1. I've been getting the BSOD "process or crucial thread has been eliminated" for the past eon or so at random times when i'm on my computer. It has happened a minute after startup and it has happened after my computer has been on for 5 days. After researching the interweb for a solution to this annoying BS i've found that many ppl have had the same problem because their hard drives werent set up as master. So my question is can you set a SATA connected hard drive to master or is that only for IDE connections?

A:Hard drive on SATA 1

IDE (or actually ATA)

Also you should try Sata 2 port, and also possibly replace the Sata cable for your issue.

You should also run a Drive Diagnostics on your HardDrive. It may also be a partition fault, you may be able to check this with a GParted boot CD

I'm a bit desperate here. I have a Sata Seagate barracuda 7200 320 Gb hard drive that wont work. it appears to try to start but it starts making a weird sound, almost like a car when its trying to start but can't. I was recommended to get a SATA to USB wire and tried it, but no luck. it tries to start for a while then stops all together. windows said a USB device malfunctioned. any ideas the drive isn't that old so i didn't back it up & there is a lot of data that I would hate to lose, some I don't even remember that may be important. any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
