I want to replace my laptop

Q: I want to replace my laptop

Hi there,

I currently have a Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop, but it is about 4 years old now, and I fancy something new. I have a budget of Ł400 - Can anyone please recommend the best laptop for the price (all round ability). I hope this isn't too much of a broad question!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So i have a laptop that is aging. I was thinking about taking the DVD drive out and putting a new hard drive in.
I removed the DVD to check it out. I don't recognize the connector. Heres a picture. is this standard, what it called?

Is there any reason my plan wont work?

Your plan won't work. Get a USB drive.

I'm looking to purchase an SSD for my laptop as the primary drive.
CPU is: Intel® Core™ i7-4710MQ Processor ( 6MB L3 Cache, 2.50GHz)
The current hard-drive I have is a 1TB (7200 RPM) Western Digital SATA2 Hard-Drive. Will most likely turn this one into the storage drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm also thinking of getting another HDD to have a mirror image of what will be on the SSD in case something goes wrong, so any suggestions for a back up HDD will also be appreciated!

Thank you!

A:SSD to replace HDD on laptop

ocz and kingston both do well priced 480gb drives
you could do one of two things after installing the SSD, 1) buy a 2.5" 3.5" external dock or a 2.5" enclosure for the hard drive

As for a backup i would let someone else here have a hand in this!

Personally i would buy a Network Attached Storage (NAS) something like a WD cloud drive and do a clean install of the OS on the SSD

I realize this is a very vague question with no definitive answer but hope to get some info to make a decision Yesterday my Vista bit laptop monitor suddenly turned bright white When I reboot it goes immediately to white However when I lean the monitor forward to about a angle the screen becomes visible I looked online Fix laptop or replace and found that it was probably a loose video connection My husband and I took it apart and disconnected everything in the monitor We found several minute spots on the fine Fix or replace laptop wires where we could see specks of silver We used electrical tape and covered them and put everything back together No change I now have an external monitor hooked up to it but that makes having a laptop rather useless My question is am I looking at a very costly repair or do I need to just replace the laptop It was a cheap laptop Presario CQ - WM but does everything I need which is mainly a little emailing and reading recipes Nothing that requires much speed Any suggestions will be much appreciated Peg nbsp

A:What Should I Buy to Replace My Laptop?

Based on all the various uses (ie: applications), screen requirement, and keyboard, I'd say get another laptop. Your only major requirement (for a laptop anyway) is the screen, so concentrate on getting a model with the largest screen in your price range. The specs don't really matter as the new hardware will be much faster than the old Dell.

My girlfriend recently dropped her laptop while the dvd tray was out which bent it and it won't open now. Is it possible to change the DVD-Drive on a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5874. If so where I can purchase the part from so I don't have to pay the heinous repair costs. I have done a lot of work with desktop computers and some with laptops I just don't know where to locate this info.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

A:Can you replace a DVD Drive on this Laptop

Yes. There are several available on eBay... Most of the drives are of equal quality and work well, but you may have to change the peripheral hardware to fit... If handy with small tools and logic, you can do it yourself... otherwise find a talented tech friend.
You should totally remove the optical drive and partially disassemble the Toshiba to make sure nothing else is damaged that will make repairs difficult.
Any impact damage great enough to bend parts in an optical drive, could have done other very severe damage.

So today my brother destroyed my dad's laptop's screen and I was blamed for his ridiculous anger problems

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend someplace or website to get a new screen because it has a crack in it and nothing will show up on it I would like to know if there are any risks or dangers of replacing it.

I know the laptop itself works just fine because I plugged it up to a different monitor and I was able to use it like normal.

If you need more information I am just fine with telling.

Ok guys longtime out of the loop on laptops I'm running an MSI GX and it's done ok on dota which is the only game I play a lot of right now However I will be looking to play a few others in the near future dungeon defenders and the final fantasy remake when it comes out The problem is that I've recently run into a problem with my GX the hinge seized and broke the screen casing So I have two options pick up a new laptop or there replace Fix my laptop. or current is a used GX for I can pick up to just fix up this one and use it for spare parts Now I don't have a lot of for a new laptop right now max around So I'm just wondering if it's worth trying for something new in that price range or just fix up the gx for now Specs on the GX - Intel Core i - M - GB HDD - GB RAM - HD video Thanks guys

A:Fix or replace my current laptop.

If you're not opposed to the idea, can easily pick up a used MSI for around that price. I've bought both of the MSI's I've owned used and they work/worked perfect. Check Amazon, eBay, and some hardware forums as well that sell a lot of hardware. Will probably have a 2xxx or 3xxx series i5 or even an i7 - and probably either a 5xx or 7xx series nVidia card (or equivalent AMD GPU).

My Toshiba Satellite M20-S257 hard drive squealed to a halt. It's shot. Mechanically, it's easy enough to replace. It is the original HD: 30GB Ultra ATA/66 (ATA-5) 4200 rpm 9.5 mm; Disk Drive HDD 2181 MK3021GAS.

Are there constraints in purchasing a new HD? For example, can I upgrade the storage space and the rpm? Do I stay with ATA-5? Any recommendations on HD brand?

I currently have 512mb RAM which can be upgraded to 1gb. The laptop runs at 1.3ghz.

Finally, will I be able to reboot the machine with my backup copy of XP Pro service pack 2? Thanks.

A:Help. Need To Replace Keyboard In Laptop

It would help if we knew the make and model of laptop.

But, I've had to replace keyboards on two Dell laptops. One I downloaded the Service Manual for, followed the instructions and everything went smoothly. The other, I watched YouTube videos on how to replace the keyboard and had no problems doing so.

I think your best bet is to go to the manufacturer's support site and download the Service Manual for your particular laptop. Keyboards are one of the easier replacements.

I have an HP laptop that appears to have fans that aren't working properly. I used speedfan to check the temp of my computer because we thought that could be the cause of the blue screen of death I kept getting. It showed all the comp temps to be at 102C and the fans at 0rpms.

Can I take the fans out and check them? There are screws around the fan casing, but is that something that is easy enough to do? If they aren't working right- how easy is it to replace them myself? It'll be just as expensive to send the laptop to HP with shipping, insurance as well as the time without the computer as it would be to go to compusa or something and buy two new fans. Could I do it myself, or should I have the local comp shop do it for me?

Welcome to TSG.

I've fixed the text in your post to the default size, you had made it gigantic for some reason.

I think you may have confused with another site. We don't have directions for changing keyboards in laptop unless you are referring to a specific thread where someone posted something in which case you need to provide a link to that thread for reference.

I did find a video for a similar model on YouTube that may help you get the keyboard off:
He also removes several other parts but you can obviously skip those things.
And here's a link to the HP Maintenance guide:

I have taken the faulty seagate ST94019A 2.5" hd out of the laptop, looked on ebuyer and found a couple that seem compatible but some say ATA-100 and some say IDE.

Im not sure if there different or the same, and also not sure about physical size.

Can anyone advise please?

A:Solved: I need to replace hd on laptop but need help?

Based on the model number you provided (seagate ST94019A), this is a 40Gig ATA drive.

Match the replacement interface to be ATA aswell and perhaps consider a larger capacity while you're at it - good time to move up in capacity since you'll have to install the Operating System (i take it it's windows)

I want to replace my 5 year old HD, and would like to do it with an SSD. I know the old HD is SATA, so my guess is that as long as the form factor is the same and capacity is equal or greater, this should be easy, but I wanted to check here to be sure. Do any of you know if there are any "gotcha's" I need to look for? Is there a cross reference guide anywhere that would line up an "engineering equivalent" HD to SSD match to be sure it will work? The old Satellite is a L675D. Thanks,

Have a Dell E1505 thats about 3 or 4 years old and the battery hasn't held a charge right in a long time, expected.

What I see on-line are so many offers with prices varying from $79.00 for a 7800 mAh 87wHr @ Laptop battery depot to what Dell has 9-cell 85wHr for $155.99.

So the real problem is where is the best honorable place to buy a bat. at a reasonable price. The Dell cost is NO Option, ...way too much, but I'm leery of getting what is a slightly better/longer lasting (according to their specs) that is 75 dollars cheaper. Cheaper b/c laptop manufactures mark their batteries up so much, or are they crap???

Can those who have replaced there battery post with there place of purchase, was it reasonably priced, and is it just as good if not better than laptop factory stamped batteries?

I just have no idea where to buy or who to trust.

A:New battery or replace laptop?

If she ever runs the laptop on battery alone by all means replace it. On the other hand if she always keeps the laptop plugged in there is really no need to replace it. You can even run a laptop with battery completely removed-though this can be a problem in the event the laptop is accidentally removed from power. Even a weak battery can give enough time to reinsert the power cord. As for the Windows Update issue, I have seen several posts recently about Windows 7 update problems and some express the opinion that it has happened since the free update to Windows 10 expired and may be part of the push to get everyone to move to 10.You might try the Windows Update troubleshooter at Microsoft to see if it offers any help.

I have a US Toshiba Satellite A505 laptop, which obviously has a US keyboard. I'm from the UK, and so am used to the UK keyboard layout, and just discovered that UK replacement keyboards are pretty cheap (not that I need to look at the keys as I type anyway, it would just be nice to have the proper keyboard).

Is it physically possible to change a US keyboard to a UK keyboard? The size of some keys are different (our Enter key is 2 lines high for example, and our Shift key's shorter). I'm not sure if the connectors underneath the keys are specific to the US layout or if the connectors underneath can apply to both a British and American keyboard layout? (or if the connectors come as part of the keyboard part itself?).

So I bought a fan, went home and a day or two later, the screen turns black and a popup shows "Display driver AMD has stopped working blablabla." and then goes back. Now it's just stuck on that blue screen thing. I can't boot into Windows at all.

Or Do I need to replace the motherboard as well?
Thank you in advance. Any help is always appreciated. Of course sorry my bad English

A:Is it possible to change or replace laptop processor

Nope. Laptops are so cheap now days. You could buy a new one, for the price of a motherboard for the current laptop. The Celeron CPU is actually a downgraded CPU (say i2 or Core-Duo). Biggest scam was when P4's were considered high end, but the budget systems had the word "Celeron" in it. So people figured that the CPU was garbage.

I all that the laptop is being used for is Web Browsing, email, looking at PDF's, occasional documents, online streaming, the current one will be fine.

You can use CPU-Z to find out the actually Factory "die" that Current CPU is. CPU-Z | Softwares | CPUID

i have a fujitsu N5010. its pretty much the same as a toshiba laptop. the CD drive currently installed is a toshiba combo drive. i think the drive is pretty outdated so i wanted to get a newer different brand model.

the problem is the shell, or outside of the drive. If you can remove or separate the shell from the drive, then any drive should work.

Will a dual core benefit a person that is mainly going to game with the laptop? Any recommendations? I'm looking at a $400 - $700 range if possible.

It's apparent that my laptop's graphic card is messed up. When the computer is switched on, the screen first goes white an after a long time, half the screen turns black.I'm forced to switch off the main power then. My laptop is an HP one, 2.0 Ghz,2 gb ram and 128 MB Nvidia AMD graphics. I bought it in late 2007. I heard it's not possible to replace graphic card; but how can I check whether it can be replaced ? It has an expansion port on it's left side and a slot in the right side.

Also, how much long will it to take replace it (at the repair store I mean) ?

A:Is it possible to replace optical drive on laptop with 2nd H...

See p. 39 of the Manual here: Manual It is very very easy to remove the DVD drive. It is allowed for end users to do and keep the warranty. You need a 9.5 mm thick optical bay hard drive adapter: Some things you need to know. The interface will be slower. It will not be a bootable device so whatever you put in there is for pure storage. Get a big cheap 5400 rpm SATA hard drive. You can stream video from it but it will not be great for video editing or anything else requiring fast disk access.  But it is possible to do and easy. I'm new, plz help.  My laptop's hard drive is failing and needs replacing.  I can order a similar drive (a 160 GB SATA drive) from ebay.  Question: when I get and replace the drive, what steps must I take for the laptop's BIOS to recognize the new drive, make it the primary, then install the Windows 7 OS from my Recovery DVDs?Perhaps the BIOS will see the drive automatically and I can simply use the Reccovery DVDs???? Thank you!

A:How to replace my laptop's hard drive

It's really straightforward. Stick the new drive in the machine, boot from the DVD and let the installer initialize, format and mount the hard drive.  Hard drive "how-to" is on p. 4-10 of the Service manual here: These older laptops are a joy to work on. Reminds me of when the computers and pollution control stuff became common on cars. I got so confused searching for a solution I decided to ask for specific detailed answer. My 80 year old brain doesn't help especially since I am not a techie, just to poor to pay to have it done!!!
I am getting notices that my 8 year old Win 7 laptop 80 GB HDD has a problem, but it still works and I haven't used it since the notices appeared.
I purchased another 80 GB HDD.
How do I clone the existing HDD to my external HDD, install the new HDD and transfer the clone to the new HDD and have it boot with all the existing programs and files working as before.
I appreciate someone's help.

A:Need to replace dying hard drive in laptop.

You could try a clone. Or you could try an imaging procedure.

Either can work or fail.

I'd say the best tool for the job is Macrium Reflect Free Edition. It will clone or image. It's free.

Windows 7 has a built-in imaging capability, but it can be confusing if you are unfamiliar with it.

With Macrium Reflect, the general procedure would be:

Install Macrium.

Use it to make an image file. Save the image file on the external disc.

Make a "recovery" CD with Macrium.

Install your new hard drive.

Boot from the recovery CD and navigate to the image file you made.

"Restore" that image file to the new hard drive.

That's the basic procedure, but it's not foolproof. Neither is cloning.

Are you ready, willing, and able to reinstall Windows and all of your applications if cloning and imaging fail?

Have you backed up your personal data, bookmarks, and email to the external hard drive? That would probably be my first concern as the old hard drive may expire in 2 minutes for all we know.

Can you give the exact message you are getting about a bad hard drive? What is giving you this message?

My Acer 7750G all the sudden showed a black screen, shut off and won't boot. I've had it for two years. The battery had been lasting less and less in the past year. That day I had been using the laptop unplugged for an hour or so, but when it went dead I'm pretty sure it was plugged in.

When I try to turn it on, the power button and the "light bulb" light blink five times and that's it.

When I take out the battery and try to boot, the blinking stops but it's still dead. Taking out the power cord makes no difference.

I also tried taking out the battery and the power cord and then pressing the on button for 60 seconds, but there was no response and no blinking.

Can this be fixed by replacing the battery?

Hi, The Specifications Page for your notebook lists it as shipping with Windows 10 - if that's correct, the machine should still be under warranty so you could contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced free of charge- If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the UK, contact HP Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you do want to replace the HDD yourself, the procedure is detailed starting on Page 56 of the Maintenance & Service Guide.  ( Note that there are 2 screws under the rear rubber feet that are easy to forget- Page 39 ). Regards, DP-K

A:HP laptop failed. Can I replace the hdd and reinstall vista

Usually these days one is lucky to get the actual disc set.. Manufacturers wishing to save on cost? But they do provide a recovery partition and encourage users to make their own set of recovery discs too. When you replace the HDD of course the recovery partition won't be there; and if you didn't have the disk set you say you have? you would have had to contact HP - or go to their support/download area to get them? You have the discs! So you're well ahead? that you can simply install the new drive and use the discs to rebuild the Vista installation? Dug it out from hp support - just to give you a firm re-assurance?Re' backup software - which one was/is it?When you do get Vista running again. suggest you copy (rather than backup) your data etc to external media. Typically DVD and ideally another medium (another HDD)? Check the copies are accessible etc too on at least one other working system. Keep them safe and check/update at intervals?Actual copies are more flexible in that you "don't" need the actual backup software to recover/access them/content - they will be accessible by any system? Also - in-case you need more input? what model HP do you have? Also what happened to the current HP HDD; and is there anything on the "failed" HDD that you might wish to have a go at recovering?message edited by trvlr

Hi, Basically all standard HDD's for laptops (2.5", 7mm or 9.5mm thick) from any reliable vendor will work. They come with many different size (capacity) from 120GB (or even less) to 2TB or more such as: My suggestion: buy SATA III HDD with 7200RPM and big cache (32Mb and up). Your machine may only run SATA II but no harm for using SATA III, you only have to pay few dollars more. For capacity, 500GB, 750GB or 1TB will do. Regards.

Hi, I have a gateway solo 2500 laptop (12.1'' tft screen)

The thing stopped working 3 yrs ago. Power on, cd spins, hd spins, fan spins.. nothing after that. Wasn't about to pay gateway $400 to fix it. Recently figured it out.. I just needed to reseat the processor. Problem is that in the last 3 years somewhere the screen got cracked so bad that I can only see a small fraction of it, though external monitor is fine.

So I purchased another Gateway Solo 2500 with a 12.1'' tft screen and I want to swap the screens (the other one I bought is a 266mhz MMX processor whereas mine is a celeron 400) so how do I do that.

Has anyone done this? Are there any things I should watch out for, is it super simple or is this something to leave to the pros?

I'm great with desktops, not so experienced with laptops.

thanks... closetgeekla

A:How to replace laptop screen (Gateway 2500)

Are the cases identical ? If they are, then you need to start taking the unit apart until you get down to removing the Lid's hinges. There should be a cable that goes from the MOBO to the display. Unplug it and swap lids.

This is based on my experience disassembling my HP laptop to fix the connection cable, which was being pinched by the hinge.

Of course the other possibility is to swap the newer MOBO and drives into the other case's base unit.

These ports are soldered to the motherboard. Replacing/repairing them consists of removing the motheboard from the laptop and soldering a new powerconnector on.

Definately not a do it yourself type thing. I would suggest a competent local computer shop. This service usually runs around $100 in my area. The challenge will be finding someone willing to work on laptops anymore.

You are probably SOL if the laptop smells burnt. That "receiver" is nothing more than a small VRM. Did you accidentally plug in an AC adapter that wasn't meant for that laptop?

Either way, your best bet is to see if you can get it rma'ed.

hiya buddy read this see if any good.
Downgrade Without Reformatting
Obviously, the most convenient way to downgrade is to do so without reformatting. In order to do that, you need to have a real retail CD of Windows XP. If all you have is a recovery disk that came with your computer, you’re not going to be able to do it this way. You will need to reformat.

To downgrade, use the following as a guide:

Do a full backup of your current, Vista system. If something happens, you can always revert to the backup.
Boot your computer off the Windows XP disc. Just pop the CD into the CD-ROM and reboot. If, for some reason, your computer boots without looking for the CD drive, you need to go into your system BIOS and change the boot order so that it checks for the CD drive during the boot process.
When the computer asks to press the space bar to boot from the CD, do so.
When Windows XP Setup starts up, press “R” to enter the recovery.
If it asks you to choose a Windows installation, press a number and hit Enter. The likely number will be 1.
If you get asked for an Administrator password, enter when asked. If you do not know it, you will need to abort and go back into Windows Vista to get your password.
At the command prompt, we’re going to use the “fixboot” command. We’ll use the following commands in sequence to prep for XP:
cd \
ren windows winvista

When done, reboot the machine again using your Windows XP CD. This time, you can proceed normally with a normal XP setup.
When setup is complete, what you’re going to have is a separate installation of Windows XP. You’re still going to need to re-install your applications and manually move all your data. You will see Vista’s documents on the hard drive. Just move them over to the location you want them to be.

As you can see, there is still work involved with this method. There is no way to downgrade to XP and not have to re-install your applications. The only way to pull that off is if you originally upgraded from XP and you had Windows save a restore point before upgrading to Vista. In that instance, you have something to fall back to.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and the audio input in front is can sometimes get it to work but often it's impossible. How difficult is it to replace it? I also heard from someone that you might be able to do the sound through that correct? What is my best option here?

A:Replace hard drive in HP Laptop without install discs

The chances are that yes, it is that simple.

On my old Dell laptop with Vista, that's how the system had been transferred to an SSD. The difference was that I've used USB not CD boot disk. The imaging with Macruim did not impact licensing of the OS and applications, they are working just fine. Vista is SSD aware and will adjust the boot sector size for the best SSD performance.

The wild card is how HP handles licenses for the new hard drive, be that HDD or SSD? They may do it differently than Dell, but I doubt it...

I have Acer Aspire VN7-791G-71P5 with Intel Core i7-4710HQ and Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M. Running Asus ROG RealBench stress test, CPU reached maximum temperature (95 °C) and was thermal-throttled to 2.6 GHz (almost no turbo). After I replaced thermal compound with Arctic Silver 5, CPU reached 80-85 °C and was not thermal-throttled (full turbo). The pre-applied GPU thermal compound is actually comparable to the Arctic Silver 5; GPU temperatures did not measurably change after re-application.

I have a Dell Precision M4500 laptop that I bought a couple of years ago. It has a 64GB SSD with 64bit Win7 on it, and a 500GB internal 5400rpm Toshiba storage HD linked to the SSD. Lately I've noticed that the Toshiba drive is starting to click noticeably, which means it's probably time for a replacement.

The question is if I go out and buy a new 500GB or 1TB drive, is it just plug & play and the OS will just detect it automatically? Or will I need to install some kind of Intel storage drivers and do some additional tweaking?

I've never done this before so any help here would be most appreciative.

A:How do I replace a storage hard drive that's built into my laptop?

It will likely be plug and play, but laptops can be kind of finicky. If it does require drivers, Windows should install them automatically, or through Windows update.

The instructions provided by HP are poor.   The youtube videos I have quickly searched don't follow the instructions provided. Some actually make things more complicated and have you remove the entire rear cover of the laptop. Other videos have very poor imagg quality or jerkiness that it is impossible to follow. I am very frustrated right now because an HP poster said this was an easy task to do. I beg to differ. I have built PC's before and replacing this keyboard is anything but easy unless you're an HP engineer.

My 40 gig burped then chkdsk deleted EVERYTHING. I'm assuming the 40 gig drive was the root of the problem an want to replace it with a Seagate 160 gig but have concerns about war stories I've read in various forums about doing this. Are any of these true?

1. Is there something called a "STAMP" on the eMachine motherboard that prevents installation of any hard drive that isn't purchased from eMachine?

2. The restore CD for the 40 gig eMachine won't work on the new 160 gig upgrade? I've even heard that it can't even be done with a brand new Windows XP SP2 home installation. What gives?

I've heard some horrible stories about upgrading eMachine laptop hard drives. I'm searching info before buying the new Seagate 160 gig drive.

A:Want to replace eMachine M2105 laptop 40gig with Seagate 160gig

Good luck to you. We have repaired a number of these with new drives. They don't remain fixed, crashing after three months. We suspect the cooling channels are too small... and when they fill with dust and hair, the M105 overheats.
We have NOT had any trouble using the restore discs to install windows on a Seagate or Western Digital 80 GB hard drive. We also have not had trouble installing WXP OEM on a larger drive up to 120 GB.
However, they do not stay fixed... due to some problem with the computer which we never bothered to understand.
We ordered a new 3-Disc recovery set from eMachines... and had no trouble installing it on a number of machines.
The problem with the other sizes is due to restrictions by Microsoft, not by eMachines... and eMachines tech support has been willing to help us reset tje system.

A:Looking to replace broken LCD screen on Compaq 700 series laptop. Any Tips?

Easy to do

Its not a complicated item to change.. You will need a T-9 Torx driver.. Pull the rubber pads off the Bezel.. (all 5 4 small corner and the one long center top) Then the rest is downhill.. If you need a screen I have one here..
