To Replace or Upgrade?

Q: To Replace or Upgrade?

I have a HP a1020n Pavilion I use to do audio reconditioning on, it's running WinXP. I've maxed the memory and have a terabyte drive installed already. My question is; should I bother to try to upgrade to Win7 and add a DirectX 9 video card and a better audio card to replace the onboard chip or just junk it and buy something newer with Win7 packaged with it? I've read one thread here by someone trying to install an upgraded video (Upgrading video card on HP Pavilion a1020n with ATI Radeon X1600 Pro PCI-e) and it doesn't paint a very good picture of trying to do any of this. Any thoughts/advice are appreciated.

Preferred Solution: To Replace or Upgrade?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: To Replace or Upgrade?

It isn't worth the money to upgrade in exchange for the performance increase you would get.

What do you audio reconditioning with? What software? Potentially you could scrap XP, install Linux and use Audacity. Only costs you your time, no money.

I've done a fair bit of audio reconditioning of speeches recorded on cassette tapes with Audacity.

I have an XPS computer at least 6 or 7 years old that's still working well. But the battery now needs to be replaced as well as needing a new network card. The processor is intel cor (TM) i7-2630, QM CPU @ 2,00GH, 64 bit OS APCI x 64 based PC, 8 GB ram with pen support, running Windows 10. It is getting quirkier every time there's an upgrade.my email doesn't scroll smoothly anymore I used to be able to magnify a photo with the touch pad and that's disappeared..I don't know whether it's worth a rehab and if so, what needs to be upgraded. Should I reinstall the OS? Unfortunately money is an issue .I need a computer to do graphic design  and I do try to get a better machine when I need a new one.I've seen some interesting new ones, but the prices are steep.
Many thanks for the help,
Renee

A:upgrade or replace

Assuming the system has a hard drive, replacing it with a solid-state drive is the single best upgrade you can make.  That, plus a new battery and a network card should total less than $300.

I have a Dell 4550 Desktop with 1.8 pentium and 256 RAM running XP, a local computer store suggested I buy an off lease Dell with a 3.0 pentium with 2 GB RAM for $150 and he'll copy all of my programs over.

Or am I better off adding RAM?

The thing runs so slow it takes 10 minutes to restart before everything loads.

So, are these correct sequence of events to get OS onto SSD? 1. Put bootable Win 10 DVD in DVD drive.2. Power off.3. Unplug HDD and plug in SSD into SATA 1 that HDD was using.4. Power on and quickly enter bios setup.5. Change boot order to SSD OR to DVD drive where the bootable Win 10 DVD is at?6. Save Settings and Exit.

A:Did free upgrade to 10 but now want to replace HHD with SSD ...

Hi: Yes, though you may not have to change any boot order settings. The PC should automatically scan for bootable devices on POST, and with the W10 installation media in the DVD drive, it should automatically boot from that device, since no OS is installed on the SSD. Then when you get to the W10 installation screen, you will be given the option to enter a product key, or select "I don't have a product key." Select the "I don't have a product key" option, and windows 10 will install. Once you are reconnected to the internet, activation should be automatic since the PC was already legally upgraded to W10 and previously activated.

I've decided to just replace it myself, any suggestions on what sort of thing I should look for(price range upto about 120)
I'll post my computer spec later.

Give us your make and model of your motherboard. Link us and we will help.

As a side note, never buy from them again. You and I both know it is faulty RAM or that they didn't set the voltage correctly in the BIOS.

There's a weird sound from of of the fans Click to expand...

together with the no input signal message MAY indicate damaged hardware but MAY also indicate that the computer case is totally choked with dust

That is your starting point to open the case - usually but not always a side panel is removable, you want the side panel that is furthest from the I/O plate where the mouse, keyboard, Ethernet etc connects

Unless you know how to proceed examine that aspect first, just visually and when you reply with how dusty it is, I will offer you further guidance

A:Upgrade Vostro 1720 or replace.

It's not worth upgrading this system - yes, the SSD will help but won't perform at its best because of the old controller.  Some things can be upgraded (CPU), others can't (video) and still others aren't worth upgrading (memory) because the type is obsolete.

I have an emachine T5026 that I am either looking to upgrade or replace. If I were to upgrade it I need a new video card and at least 1 GB of memory. I have had this computer for nearly three years and also know that the psu should and needs to be replaced. I have built an older computer from scratch before so this will be easy to replace these things. Or should I buy a new computer? I would like a good gaming computer. If need be I could scrap parts from the emachine. Either way it needs to be affordable.

A:Upgrade or replace? Core 2 Q6700

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You need to be more specific with the "i cant connect" situation.. this isnt a hardware fault so theres nothing broken, this is a connection/game issue.

If you really just want a new pc, then dont buy one, build one. You have a decent branded powersupply so you can keep that for the new rig, the rest is all down to budget.

Hi guys,

So let me explain my situation. I have a 15 month old laptop, with a dying hard drive. Quite frequently when it spins up, the hard drive makes a horrible buzzing/scraping noise. I decided I will invest the money and replace it for the $100 and get a faster one (7200 rpm).

Here's the catch. I have an upgrade disk on order, and only an OEM backup disk (Vista) to reformat.

Whats the best way to replace the hard disk and use an upgrade media to use 7 on my computer?

A:Upgrade and Replace Hard Drive

Pull the HDD out of the laptop. Attach it to your desktop, assuming you have one.

When new HDD for laptop arrives, attach that to desktop as well.

Use Clonezilla to clone the old HDD to the new.

Take new HDD out of desktop and put in laptop. Boot the laptop as normal. Enjoy. Remove old laptop HDD from desktop and phyiscally destroy it if there's sensitive data on it. Throw it out after.

Upgrade to Windows 7 on the laptop in any way you see fit.

Ok so my computer doesn t emit a monitor signal and turns itself off most of the time after seconds this is after reapplying thermal paste because it shut itself down a couple of times from overheating Done a couple of tests and I think the cpu is dead or the motherboard I have or replace processor sure completely? - Not upgrade Asus p b-vm se corsair gb ram ati hd xt intel q Should I replace the broken cpu bearing in mind it could still be the mobo possibly Or should I just replace the cpu mobo and get Not sure - replace processor or upgrade completely? some new ram while I m at it to be up to date I m just thinking that if i replace the cpu i might find out that it s actually the mobo that s broken and also if it is the chip and I replace it how long before I upgrade anyway What processor would be a good upgrade I ve been using tomshardware charts but not sure really what kind of scores in what areas I m looking for I ll be using Not sure - replace processor or upgrade completely? cpu-upgrade com anyway to find out what mobo I need to get if I upgrade Thanks in advance guys nbsp

A:Not sure - replace processor or upgrade completely?

try this:
Download this bootable CD image: http://soft-best.net/software/utilities_tools/1314-utility-cdrrw-8cm-v2100-bootable-iso.html

boot the cd, go to Hardware test section and run the eurosoft tests.
its a comprehensive set of tests for all your hardware. you will then know what is causing the problem. (use winrar to extract the image, you only need to download the three parts from one of the sites)

Advice:
I reccommend that you only perform the Non Distructive tests.

The reason why I ask is because I just purchased Windows 7 64 bit Pro -Upgrade from school on a student discount for like 28 bucks. I couldn't pass it up.

Anyway I'm using Vista Home Premium 64 bit atm and I know already that an upgrade won't even attempt to install if you don't have a valid copy of Windows.

Obviously I do have a valid copy and I intend to do a custom installation, doing a clean installation.

Anyway does W7 replace your current product key with an upgrade key? I want to know because I'd like to install my Windows Vista to another machine just as long as they don't share the same product keys...

So is this possible? Because I won't know until sometime next week when it gets mailed to me.

A:Does a Windows 7 Upgrade replace your previous product key?

Hello Matt, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, it will replace the old product key. During the installation of any Windows 7, it will ask you to enter the product key number for the one that you are currently installing, and use it instead with the Windows 7 edition that it is for.

If you have a retail copy of Vista, then you will be able to install and activate it on another computer since it will no longer be installed on any other computer.

If you have a OEM copy of Vista, then you will not be able to install and activate it on another computer since it is permanently tied to the first computer that it was activated on.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have a HP 6005 Pro SFF with a 240W PS, and I would like to upgrade its video card.  It has an ATI Radeon HD 4200.    One HP Forum person (Paul Tikkanen) recommended an upgrade for a 6005 using an optional video card for the HP 6200 Pro SFF:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121439&cm_re=hd_6450-_-14-121-439-_-Product Please confirm this also works for the 6005.  If I replace it, can I actually remove the Radeon 4200 and replace it directly to same motherboard's slot space to save PCI Expansion slot space, or must I use the PCI Express 16x Expansion slot?   If so, is the procedure for direct replacement documented anywhere?

A:Replace ATI Radeon HD 4200 Video Card to Upgrade Graphics fo...

Hi: The ATI Radeon HD 4200 Video in your PC is the integrated graphics chip according to page 14 of the quickspecs at the link below. In other words, the graphics adapter is a chip soldered to the motherboard.  It is not in any expansion slot. http://static.highspeedbackbone.net/pdf/HP%20Compaq%206005%20Pro%20Business%20PC%20Quick%20Specs.pdf The dedicated PCI express x16 slot should be empty right now, and that is where you would install the card I recommended. I see no reason why the HD 6450 wouldn't work.  It works in the dc7800, dc7900, 6000 Pro, 6200 pro, 8000 Elite, 8100 Elite and 8200 Elite business desktop PC's. You just need to make sure you uninstall the HD 4200 graphics adapter and driver in the device manager.  Also check the uninstall driver box. Also uninstall the catalyst control center software in the add/remove programs section of the control panel, shut down and unplug the PC, install your new video card and driver for the 6450. Here is the link to the service manual. See chapter 2 pp 20 - 25 for expansion card installation procedures, paying particular attention to the PCIe x16 slot info. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01870938

Hi all The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite A -S A few weeks ago it got dropped right on its adapter? Replace the replace the or jack power corner Replace the power jack or replace the adapter? with the power plug still in it the little metal plug of the AC adapter is now slightly crooked and the power jack has a little chip off the plastic part of it Anyway after this mishap it worked fine for another weeks and then suddenly this week it s refusing to power up Its battery has been shot for a while can t hold a charge and I ve been using it with the battery out Why the sudden refusal to boot I took the whole thing apart---minus the little chip the power jack looks totally fine and cosmetically sound Put the whole thing back together taking care to check that plugs were snug---still no power Stuck in the crappy battery booted just fine and then shut itself down after like minutes How likely is it that it s the power jack which is broken And why did it take this long to crap out if it IS broken A new one of those silly jacks costs over on eBay so I want to make sure that it s the jack before I just up and buy one Of course if it s the AC adapter that s broken that would cost even more Bah Input nbsp

A:Replace the power jack or replace the adapter?

AND/OR inside the case the the jack is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is also possible that
1) It's already cracked
2) If not yet, it's gonna crack

So look to see what connection looks like between power jack and motherboard, If you feel u wanna/can re-solder yourself or the typically price to redo the whole power thing seems to run $125 parts/labor/warranty if you take it somewhere. So how much is it all worth to you?

Hello I need Replace in Find Column) different (but Replace & a to Find & Replace (but Replace in a different Column) know if there is a function perhaps a Macro or Query or a more complex Find amp Replace that can accomplish the following cause my database is huge amp I m hoping not to do this manually I keep an Access database for my homeowners association on the condition amp conformity of different exterior attributes for about townhomes The Board of Directors wants to move away from using the term quot Grandfathered quot which is distinguished by the acronym quot GF quot in the database column that shows conformity labeled IAW We use this database to generate annual architectural reports for our residents Our board wants the entry quot GF quot replaced with a quot Y quot they want the GF entry removed from the report completely amp they re serious about it Now I have already created a Query that has located all the GF entries in their various columns of various records which our Board wants me to use in an internal quot in-office quot database in order to keep track of what attributes actually were grandfathered originally as a reference for our field inspector when he inspects the townhomes But we also want to create an unassuming symbol on the report perhaps an or a something that will alert the inspector to an attribute that once was grandfathered on his field report This is to be done so that he will not be flying blind when he comes across a non-conforming attribute i e he will see the symbol amp know that that symbol means there used to be a quot GF quot in it s place BUT we want to move that symbol to a different column a column labeled quot Comments quot I could run the Find amp Replace function find all the GF s amp replace them with a Y but that symbol would go right back in the very same column that the GF came out of So is there a way to find all the GF s in one column amp replace them w a Y in that same column but have a symbol quot quot appear in another column of the same record I know it sounds complicated but can it be done Thanks mark man Access nbsp

For some reason W7 has decided to change 'Copy and Replace' with 'Move and Replace' when picking a file up with the left mouse and dragging it to another folder where an old version of the file exists.

My Excel SS is in two places: My desktop and USB which I use for backup. I would simply open the folder on the USB pick up the file on the desktop with the left mouse and drag it to the USB folder. Then I would get the message 'Copy and Replace'.. But not anymore it's become 'Move and Replace'.

I know I can 'Copy and Replace' by holding down the Ctrl key but I dont want to.

It looks like there should be a simple answer

Can anyone help? I swear I didnt change anything.

A:How can I 'Copy and Replace' not 'Move and Replace'.

Hi,
Have you ever tried right click drag and drop ?
There will be a list option after you drop,

A:To replace or not to replace.. that is the question.

Hi and welcome to Techspot!!

Test the RAM sticks individually. One of them might be bad. You can use Memtest86 to try them out.

Also, try them in different memory slots. That sometimes helps.

After a series of unstable voltage problem, I couldn?t get into Windows normally (only got into the desktop once, yet shut down within a second following a warning message), so I loaded a Windows CD to the blue Windows Setup stage, I got a message saying ?File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 4.? I restarted, I then got ?System 32\DRIVERS\pci.sys is damaged or missing.? in a dark screen. Is my disk still OK? Do I need to replace the HD? Thanks for the answer!

A:Do I need to replace the HD?

Maybe not. Lets focus on your "low voltage problem". Bad power can cause data corruption. Bad power can also permanently kill off hardware, such as a hard drive. We need to first establish if you solved your power issues, and how.

Did you replace the Power Supply? If so, please post manufacturer, model # and rated power output of your current PSU. If not, post the voltages as reported in BIOS.

So i wasn't sure what this topic fell under but i was hoping i could get some help on this. So i want to start running some higher up games and i'm not sure what is bottle necking me atm. I don't wanna replace both but i do have a $200 budget or so for an upgrade. I heard from someone that my cpu isn't the best but it can still hold up. While my gpu is really outdated and not good. With my current combo i'm able to play most games on highest quality, but for newer games like the witcher 3 and so on, i can barely run it. I was gonna get the geforce gtx 960, thinking that may help my performance. Here are my specs

My specs:

AMD A8-5600K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
8192MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 4B DDR3 memory

Sometime i turn off and on then the fan will work also.

Do you think i need to replace my PSU or could it be something else?

A:Should I replace my PSU?

What is the make and model? This is not sounding good what you describe. A good working PSU is the backbone of any system.

Give us the rest of your system hardware including make and model of your motherboard, amount of RAM installed, harddrive and video card. This will help us help you if you feel you need it.

Lately, I have been getting computer crashes where my monitor loses a signal from the computer, the gpu fan goes to 100%, and my computer becomes unresponsive (shutdown keyboard command doesn't work). This happens more and more often, to the point where it crashes before the computer can even post. However, when I open up the computer and jiggle around the connections, sometimes pulling out cords and re-plugging them in, this seems to completely fix the problem, until a couple days pass and the process repeats. I am certain I have a loose connection somewhere, but I'm not sure where. Should I replace the power supply or the motherboard? Or could something else be causing the issue? Thank you for any help!

I would start with swapping in a known good pw supply. While the case is open, get a bright light and give the mb a VERY close inspection. Look for any capacitors that look like the pics below.

I highly recommend that you replace it by cloning the current disk to the new one.  That is the simplest method. See the sticky I created  in this section  of the forum for details on how that is done.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/How-to-upgrade-your-notebook-to-a-SATA-2-5-quot-SSD/td-p/4563352/jump-to/first-unread-message An SSD of 256 GB or higher capacity is recommended as a replacement for the legacy hard disk currently installed. An SSD of 256 GB or higher capacity will allow for use of the Recovery media that you created with the HP Recovery Media Creator utility. See the following links at NewEgg.com to see what will work. You can only use SATA, SATAII and SATAIII interface SSD disks. None of the other interface types are compatible with your notebook's systemboard and BIOS !!! http://www.newegg.com/Internal-SSDs/SubCategory/ID-636?Tid=11693

A:What should I replace?

For what it will cost you to upgrade it to play games, I would just suggest saving for a new computer.

First, you'll need to install a video card. If the model you have is in a micro-tower, it's not likely you'll be able to find a video card to fit.

Second, you would want to upgrade the processor. Even though it's apparently dual-core, it's still extremely slow.

Third, you would want to upgrade to 4GB of RAM.

And then to support it all, you'd likely need a new power supply.

So like I said...your best option would be to clean that up, sell it, and buy a new computer when you get the money.

You can boot from the Vista DVD and run the Memory Test to see if it has any memory errors. From there you can decide if you need to replace the RAM. You could also reseat the RAM (take it out, put it back in making sure it is in good).

A:should i replace my HD?

I don`t think you should replace you hard drive just yet.

The fact that you`re getting lots of different stop messages, could be a symptom of faulty ram.

Download the memtest86+ programme from www.memtest.org.

If you don`t have a floppy drive, there is an iso version that you can burn to cd, and then boot from that.

Let the programme run for at least seven passes.

To begin with I ssd, everything as Replace it is? keep wasnt sure if this topic should go to the hardware subforum or here so please move if you deem it neccessary So the story is I have a gb ssd drive Replace ssd, keep everything as it is? for my windows installation win pro x Although Replace ssd, keep everything as it is? I am keeping every possible software installed in my D drive after years of use the ssd drive is getting very low on space I am constantly removing useless stuff and regularly declutter it but still Right now there are only gb of free space and since I ll be needing to install Visual studio soon I ll need at least - gb more So the question is is there a way to change the drive but still keep everything as it is without the need of a clean install Would an application like norton's ghost do the trick sorry if ghost is obsolete for the past years but that was the last time I needed something like it Thanks a lot John

I have a laptop that just shut down on me. when I try to restart I get to the screen for windows to start loading for about half a sec and then blue screen that flashes to fast to read anything on it. when I try to do a sys. restore from my XP CD I get this error message "PXE-E61 Media test failure, cable check". Any ideas?

A:need help to see what i need to fix or replace

Sounds as though it thinks it's needs starting from a network and that would make me wonder if it's been taken over remotely so when you do get it started, it might have a major malware infection. Tap the Delete, Function 2 or whichever other key you need to go into BIOS or Setup and seek out Boot Options or similar and make sure the order is set to boot from hard disk first.

Replace faulty HDD with a new 1TB replacement (same size - same brand).  Always get "Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot media..." all to no avail.  Doesn't matter if CD/DVD, external or HDD selected, same message.

I bought a new 400w psu with my new case. (my mother board had been flakey with lower watt models and wanted to be safe.) It runs great however the fan is a little loud and I'm looking to quiet it down. I was going to replace it with an Enermax 80mm since they're speed ajustable and quiet. I don't come close to using all the connectors provided. I run a CDR, DVD, HDD, floppy and two case fans off of it. Would it be safe to replace it with a potentially lower RPM model like the enermax?

Hi all,

I've got a little bit of a dilemma here, I've got a 3.5year old Dell 8300 with the following specs:

3GHz P4
1GB Ram
X700 Pro
225W PSU (or thats what i suspect)
Ive got a standard PCI slot.

The issue is whether to replace whole thing and get Kentfield extreme with 8800GTX obviously spend will be around 1800 for base unit or to replace graphics card (and probably PSU) and wait for Yorkfield chips later in the year, which are expected to be cheaper to produce with more speed and lower power consumption. It's just id like to play some games even with minimal detail during the year (well except Crysis which would give my system processor failure just at the sight of the box).

What would people recommend and on graphics card front what replacement would offer best value for money given my system.

Many Thanks

I have a Dell desktop with XP from 2005. Should I replace it now? And does that mean a new computer?

A:Necessary to replace xp?

XP will still work ok it will be less secure, and if you were going to replace I would consider a new pc yours is 9 years old so drivers for a newer operating system could be a problem.

Hi......simple question i have a hp pav 8984 with a cd burner......sometimes when i use the burner the computer turns of for no apparent reason..the i have to wait a few hours before i can switch it back on.....but i've been thinking i dont hear the fan anymore and at the back it gets a bit hot....should i replace the fan???? probably a stupid question....but could be something totally different...

Which fan?

If its the power supply fan, its essential. If you cook the power supply, the HP only replacements are very expensive, and standard ones usually do not fit.

A:Replace SSD

Go into control panel>backup and restore and save a disk image to your internal hard drive or an external hard drive. replace the ssd, then just use your windows install disc to put the image back on the new ssd. It`s that easy.

Hi, I am planning to purchase HP Envy 15-AE116TX and upgrade the hard drive from HDD to SSD. I will buy the SSD separately.  However, so as not to void the warranty, I should take it to HP service center and let them do the job. My question is, how much should I pay for the service? I have been calling HP service center hotline (02) 867-3551 and even the direct line to Makati service center (02) 888-6100 but nobody dared to pick up the phone. Is this the kind of after sales service that HP offers? Anyways, I am willing to go to service center but I would like to know exactly how much they will charge me.  And I have to make sure that it won't void the warranty of the laptop. Hoping for your immediate response.

I would remove the fan then see if you can match the size with this or similar from Ebay :- http://www.ebay.com/itm/65mm-DC-12V...491634?hash=item3aafbcd672:g:-rYAAOxyzfNRyFhK

You will have to match the electrical connector as well so check how many pins are in the board socket.
You may have to use some force to disconnect the present fan's power cable from the GPU board.
It is a plug/socket connection isn't it ?

When I installed Win 8 Pro on an old laptop with Win 7 32-bit (dual boot configuration), I do not remember seeing an option for installing either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8. My System shows I have 64-bit and I am having trouble locating video drivers for my 6 year old Toshiba Satellite laptop. I found people with a similar problem on an NVidia forum and they put together a 32-bit driver version that supposedly works. I did not mean to install the 64-bit version. Is there a way to do a reinstall, but this time select Win 8 32-bit? Is there an option for it If I just do a clean reinstall?

A:How to replace Win 8 Pro 64-bit with Win 8 Pro 32-bit?

Hello Stan, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The installation of either a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8 is dependent on if the installation media is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If you like, you can use the tutorial below to download a 32-bit Windows 8 ISO file from within any 32-bit Windows computer that you can use to create a bootable installation DVD or USB with.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ad-create.html

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello, On my motherboard this morning when removing a faulty graphics card, the little white clamp at the end of the pci express slot broke. Is there anyway to replace or fix this? I was thinking of gluing it somehow but the last thing I need is for the glue to melt and cause more problems than it solved. If it involves sending it off to a technician does anyone know the avg cost to replace the white clamp or complete pci express slot? If you need more info on what type of pci-express slot it is it was holding a nvidia7900 gtx OC. I'm hoping I didn't just ruin the whole motherboard.

Hi,

I ask because I purchased a Lenovo laptop (Ideapad 580N) that came pre-installed with Windows 8 which is a nightmare. I recently upgraded to 8.1 because it supposedly had some Win 7 features, instead, it has been worse than Win 8. I've never removed one Win OS and replaced it with another and I have not purchased the Win 7 OS software yet. Is there anything I should know beforehand? HATE is a strong word, but it's the only word appropriate as to my feelings of Win 8 and if possible, I would like to get back to Win 7 asap. Thank you.

Have a friend with a 9-month-old Dell Inspiron laptop who's had nothing but problems with Win XP. We've deleted the main partition and reinstalled XP, but problem (inability to maintain a modem connection) persists. It may be just a bad modem, and Dell is sending a new one, but he just doesn't like XP, and asked if it's possible to put Win 98 on the computer. I use Win 98, so am not familiar with XP, but know that XP uses NTFS instead of a FAT, and can't find anything that says whether or not it's possible to reformat the drive for a FAT-based Win 98 system. Is it, and if so, how (i.e., can I just boot to the command prompt, type "format c:", and hit enter)?

Hello prissyellowsmom, Welcome to TSF!

Without a Retail version of a Windows? XP Home? SP2 CD, there is absolutely nothing you can do.
The only solution would be to go to a reputable Computer Store and purchase one.

At random, XP will restart on its own. The computer was built less than 2 years ago and I'm not quite sure if it's a software or hardware issue. AMD 2600+, 1.9 ghz, 512mb RAM, windows XP, radeon 9600 graphics card.

I find the computer crashes when it's put under a heavy workload. For instance, I opened Spy Bot S&D to rule out any infections and within 30 seconds of running the application the computer restarted. This occured back to back just moments ago. Other times I am using WORD or browsing. This has been occuring for more than 4 months now.

I've ran a CPU application to max it out and again the computer restarts. It occurs everytime I run the program.

I also monitored my RAM while it performed and only 50% was being utilized.

How do I know it's the CPU and not the Motherboard or HD?

Thanks!

A:Do I need to replace my CPU?

Spobot Killed the Computer in the Den with the Fireplace Poker

This isn't "Clue" we're paying, you say?

Spybot uses 100% of the CPU. Your box could be entering thermal cutoff.
Use canned air to clean out the CPU/ heatsink, and just for good measure the rest of the insides as well.
Find out if your board has hardware monitoring and find what the critical zone temperatures are. You may have to install either the board manufacturers monitoring software or a utility like "Speedfan', available here at Techspot.

I need to replace the HDD in my HP PV 1000 Laptop.
I have a couple of questions.
1. Are all 2.5 drives physically the same as far as fitting into its slot and the connections?
I ask this because WD has an wxternal HDD that comes in a USB housing. It's low cost and would make it simple to get an image onto the new drive and then swap the drive into the laptop. (after removing it from the housing)

2. Has anyone come across a video of the swap? I checked UTube but only found a video of a HDD failing.

I am trying to do some work on a laptop (Win 8). HDD is completely dead so I can't read the product key from it. I am going to replace the HDD and reinstall Win 8 on it. How ever I know from experience I can't install 8 unless I have a product key.
I have read that Win 8 stores the key on the motherboard, and that when installing Win 8 it will pull the key from the motherboard.
Is this true? and will it work?

Thanks

A:Will I need a Product key if I have to replace HDD

Hello WAX,

If your laptop originally came with Windows 8/8.1 installed by the OEM, then it'll have its product key embedded in the UEFI firmware chip of the motherboard.

When you install Windows 8.1, it'll automatically detect the product key if it's the same edition the key is for.

A:Replace HD in Desktop

if both pc's have then you can join together via usb. http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/dccmain.htm

i always used a network lan etc,

do you have a CD writer, you could write the files here - NOTE outlook does not like readonly files and i have not been able to run from CD - but you could copy to new pc

The outlook files all exist in a single files. so if you create an offline folder and copy all the files you want - you can then copy those and open on a different PC.
or

if its outlook express heres and article on backup to another pc

After years of not seeing any failing drives, I've had several customer PC's with them recently. I'm working on one laptop for the 2nd time, same issue: bluescreen due to bad blocks. I'm thinking its time to retire it but wonder: is there a test routine that tells one "its time" ?? If I simply look at the SMART status after doing chkdsk repairs, it will show "healthy".

A:HDD with bad blocks, again. When to replace?

I've wondered the same thing.

If you Google around, you will see a lot of recommendations to replace when bad sectors are first seen--the implication being that more bad sectors will follow, sooner rather than later.

But I've never seen any reasoning behind that assumption. Maybe more bad sectors are no more likely to occur just because you have a few. I do remember that when hard drives were very small and expensive, you didn't see the recommendation to replace offered so freely--implying that they were still serviceable.

I'm not aware of any other inexpensive consumer-level hard drive tools that shed much light on this.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 RC on a Dell 1545 which had been running Vista Basic.

All was well except that the DVD writer vanished from explorer and Device Manager at random intervals.

I re-installed the Vista Basic and the drive worked perfectly. I backed up the driver so I have a cdrom.inf and cdrom.sys from the working Vista system

I then upgraded the Vista system to Windows 7 and sure enough the DVD drive problems came back.

I cannot find a way of replacing the Windows 7 driver with mt nice working Vista driver.

I can't update it as W7 says the current one is the best, I can't delete the driver because apparently I need TrustedInstaller permissions, I can't give myself permissions as W7 doesn't give me the option under the security tab on the driver folder.

Help please!!

A:How do I replace a W7 driver...

Device Manager > Right Click Device > Properites > Driver Tab > Click Update Driver > Choose "Let me Pick a From a List..."> Select Have Disk > Choose the driver you want to use.

A:Can I replace my CPU in my laptop?

Hi, The following link shows its specs:    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03905124 and here is some information on this processor: TypeCPU / MicroprocessorMarket segmentMobileFamilyAMD E-SeriesModel numberE-300CPU part numberEME300GBB22GV is an OEM/tray microprocessorFrequency1300 MHzClock multiplier6.5Package413-ball lidless micro-BGA (FT1)SocketBGA413Size0.75" x 0.75" / 1.9cm x 1.9cm Looks like you can't upgrade the CPU because those BGA of processors normally are soldered to the motherboard. Regards.

Your plan won't work. Get a USB drive.

Hi, There seems to be some problem detected for my original 16GB M.2 SSD, so I want to replace it with a new one. I bought the following one, which should be compatible https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KBZH72I/ref=twister_B00KBZH7E6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 My question is, after I get it, should I just remove the original one and install the new one? Is there any other thing I should to complete the replacement? The OS is on my HDD, but I don't plan to move it to the new SSD. In this case, do I just need to remove the old one and install the new one? The reason why I ask is that the manual says: "Ensure that you partition the M.2 solid-state drive after installing it on the computer you are servicing. Otherwise, the M.2 solid-state drive will not function correctly." Thanks a lot!

Hey all,

Just wondering what special steps I need to take to replace my HD without having to reinstall WinXP. Never had to do this before, so I'm not really sure of the process.

I currently have a 80gb WD Caviar IDE drive, and would like to replace it with a new WD SATA 250gb drive. Can I just copy over all the files to the new drive, and set it to boot from the new drive in the BIOS, or do I need to use a special program like Norton Ghost? I'd rather not have to go with any third-party software if I don't have to, so any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

A:Replace HD without reinstalling OS?

Hello, Jones! What do you think of using True Image? As I know it is impossible to replace HD without reinstalling the OS and without usin imaging software. I think True Image is the easiest way. It has a special feature PC Cloning that will allow you to do it easy and fast. Anyway True Image is very useful program=)

P.S.: I hope you would replace your HD with a trial version, but I'm not sure=) Good luck!

Hi All,

This is my first post here on the forum. I've been using Norton AV for the past year or so. Due to the fact that my internet provider freely offers it as a bonus for being a customer, but I feel that it's just way to resources hungry. Taking up much needed disk space, not to mention it's high cup usage and annoying pop-up's.

Would anyone be able to offer me any alternatives, when replacing Norton's bloated software. To help give my machine it's much needed protection?

Regards.

A:Looking to Replace Norton.

As far as Norton still using a lot resources and high CPU usage, not so true nowadays as older version might of been this way.
Using Norton Security not causing me any issues or using a lot of resources or CPU, see here. As far as cost of it might not want to spend 40-50 bucks to renew it as many other AV out there that are good and cheaper. Norton does get decent rating on detection, i have no issues with popups as can be turned off, this is probably due to yours is also expiring.

I currently have a 931GB Western Digital WDC WD1001FAES-75W7A0 (SATA) in my desktop computer. How difficult would it be for me to change that to an SSD drive?

A:Replace SATA HD with SSD?

How full is the drive? Is it partitioned so that OS & Programs and data are in separate partitions?

Do you wish to do a clean install of your OS & Programs or clone your existing hdd? How large of an ssd do you plan to install?

What many people do is get a 120GB ssd to install OS & Programs on, then use the existing hdd as a data drive.
