Dell xps M1530 won't save date & time on cold boot

Q: Dell xps M1530 won't save date & time on cold boot

I had to replace the motherboard on this laptop and it all worked fine with Windows 7 home prem. The only issue was not saving the date and time on cold boot. When I put it in sleep it does fine on wakeup. I tore it down again since the cmos battery is very inaccessable. The battery checked fine(3.2v) The only error I get on boot is: "RTC is fixed- time and date may be wrong"
What am I missing? Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You might just need to replace the CMOS battery to fix that problem.

Hey,
Had a Dell XPS M1530 since around February last year and was working fine up till now. Left my computer in sleep mode last night (which i do fairly often) but when i got home today and tried to turn it on (by pressing the power button) the button only flashed on for about 3 seconds and there was no other response although i could hear hard drive whirring away.
After trying another 2 times I restarted computer (by holding in power button) and then tried to turn on. However i keep getting the same result of the blue flashing on for three seconds then turning back off.
Have tried taking out the battery out and putting back in and starting the computer with only power cord but same result every time.
My warranty with Dell has run out so i can't just send back. Any ideas?

A:Dell XPS M1530 won't boot

As an update I tried reseating RAM and trying with only 2GB stick then with only 1GB stick but no improvement.
Found on Dell support holding 'fn' and power button runs a quick diagnostic with flashy LED's as codes. Got the first one flashing and the others solid which according to website means :

"The Microcontroller is handing control of the system to the processor. This code will persist if there is no processor detected"

Which i believe i'm correct in assuming means either my CPU or my motherboard is stuffed? In which case about my only option is finding the cheapest person to repair/replace it...?

A:my hp desktop won't save time and date

Make sure the new battery is in properly (+ side up when holder is flat on motherboard) and its clips are holding the battery tightly. It could also be a broken solder joint holding the clip to the motherboard. What is the date resetting to?

When I create a file in Windows 7 and save it I get the current date and time stamp but when I edit the program at a later time and date and save again it doesn't change the date and time stamp it stays the same as the original file! I feel like a moron but how can I change this?

A:Change date and time stamp on file save...

Hi Dave,

Presuming you have made changes to the file that require saving, the date and time should indeed change. See the image below : do you have the Date Modified, or Date Created option showing?

A:BSOD on cold boot no clue this time

Yes, the last BSOD during logon is totally silent about any possible cause. But with 30 programs at startup can cause it.

Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.
Click on the Start button
Type ?msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the ?Startup? tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Accept then restart.
Any change in configuration may also cause it. If it recurs, you may try Advanced Boot Options > Last Known Good Configuration.

The bugcheck stop 0xA is usually caused by the following reasons: Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner, Backup tool, compatibility. So if possible, plan to update the BIOS to Version 2301 dated 2012.09.29; from ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 .

Also, stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.
If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Install the latest NVIDIA DRIVERS 314.22WHQL.
Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features3D Vision Control Driver
3D Vision Driver
Graphics Driver
HD Audio Driver
PhysX
nvidia Update
(Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
Download 314.22 WHQL. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:

Hello,

I've just turned on my Desktop today and got my first blue screen since building this computer (built in 2012).

I'm more of a hardware guy than software... but know my way around registry etc. So thought it be best if I post here, as I'm sure someone in here will have allot better understanding of trouble shooting these BSOD's!

I have attached the Zip file as requested in the 'Posting Instructions' so hope I've done all okay.

Many thanks in advanced to anyhow is able to give me an in-sight as to what could have caused this BSOD.

Regards,

Makem.

Every day I come home and boot up my computer, and every day it BSODs either instantly or within 10 minutes, once I restart it seems to be fine and will run for DAYS. Also seems like all of my last systems have been having the same problem, so possibly it's some of the hardware I have been re-using, but it is beyond me to figure out and I just need it to stop..

Windows 7 x64 full retail, fresh installed in the last 2-3 months, problem didn't exist immediately..

Hardware varies from a few months old (motherboard, cpu) to a few years old (video card, hard drives, some older and some newer ram). I have tried with multiple different hard drives with fresh installs of Windows as well as different RAM combinations and configurations.

If anybody can help me sort this out, I would love you forever.

Hello:

Each time I turn on my computer and as it is boots up it will delay for a time with a line that reads something like ...Automatic IDE Configuration.... and then a message that my date and time are incorrect. The date goes back to Nov. 2003. Once I correct the date, time and year things seem to perform ok. Any suggestions on how to correct this problem would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I am running XP Home SP3 on an Asus 1005HA netbook

Every time I boot up I get a message to say that either I can press F1 to enter setup to set date/time or press F2 to load default values

If I choose F1 and enter the correct date/time and press F10 to save and exit - XP then starts up normally but the next time I boot up, the same problem occurs.

[If I select F2, then XP loads normally]

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks for any help in advance

I have a dell inspiron 1526 running 32 bit Windows Vista. I've had it for about 2 years, and since about a month ago, when I power on, the lights and fans come on, but no display shows. I can even hear the hard drive spinning. This happens every time I try to cold boot.

So I shut it off, then turn it on again. I go through this process about 20-40 times, and my computer suddenly turns on and runs normally. It behaves the same with or without the battery in. It will also randomly crash and just power off. No reboot or blue screens. And occasionally, my date and time settings will be off when I finally get the computer running.

The only conclusion I have came to is that it could be a failing component, just not sure which one it is. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:Dell Inspiron 1526 no display from cold boot

try hooking an up an external display to see if you still get video. the fact that the date and time are off could indicate that the system battery is failing. however, if the board is not working properly the battery is pointless to replace.

When laptop wakes up from sleep (or boot/reboot) the pest splash screen (then login, again!) stops workflow.
ie, one key to close the splash screen THEN password to to login (and I only stopped to scratch my ear)

I have followed the instructions at Dell "How to disable the Dell splash screen" for "For Dell? Inspiron? 3500, 5000, 7500, and 7000 Systems

How do I permanently disable the splash screen , it serves no usefull function other than more clicks to start work.

Would appreciate any help

Depending on computer/laptop model that logo/splash might be hard or not possible to remove.
What splash screen can it be then... Art for art's sake...

Seems you've already posted this on DELL's site.

I'm guessing this splash screen s from Windows 8: date time included. Is not related to the BIOS.

This one is called lock screen, pretty useless because it's just for the looks, requires an extra key press... reduces productivity.
Forget this BIOS stuff below if this is the one bothering you.
To disable it:
How to Disable the Lock Screen on Windows 8 Without Using Group Policy
In case of BIOS splash see below:
The site you linked looks weird here, just in case here's the info:

For Dell? Inspiron? 3700 and 3800 Systems.
There is no option in the BIOS to disable the splash screen. Pressing the <Esc> key will have No effect on the splash screen either.
For Dell? Inspiron? 3500, 5000, 7500, and 7000 Systems.
Pressing the <Esc> key will remove the Dell splash screen temporarily. To permanently disable the Dell splash screen:

After you power on the system, but before the operating system begins to load, press the <F2> key to enter the System Setup Program.
The System Setup Program screen appears. At the bottom of the screen will be instructions on how to navigate the menus.Use the <Arrow> keys to navigate to the Main screen.Change the Quiet Boot option to Disabled.

NOTE: When Quiet Boot is set to Disabled, it allows Power On Self Test (POST) messages and the summary screen to appear at system start-up. When Quiet Boot is set to Enabled (default), it prevents the diagnostic POST messages and summary screen from appearing at system start-up. If Quiet Boot is enabled, a boot device cannot be selected during start-up.Press the <F10> key and then the <Enter> key to save the changes and exit the program.
For Dell? Inspiron? 3200 and 3000 Systems.
There is no Dell splash screen that comes up on these systems; therefore, the diagnostics screen will display during boot.
For Dell? Latitude? LS Systems.

Hello,
I'm running into trouble with a Dell Inspiron 1545, windows 7 Home premium service pack 1, 64bit, 250gb HDD, 3gb Ram.

after I did a tune up (all updates, remove outdated antivirus and some other unnecessary programs and stuff) when I Shut down the System: it restarts instead of just shutting down and every time it restarts the Date/time is wrong, when I go to date/time setting to set it to Internet time the APPLY button doesn't light up to apply the change so it temporally changes but it doesn't remain. with that said I can't shut down properly as I'm suppose to, and the date/time it's alway ahead for hours or even days..
CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME?

Thank you all very much :)

Readers Digest version we have an / on boot changes Time system Date install base of two different laptops HP amp Dell Inspiron at our customer sites running our locked down kiosk software These are all running a version of XP that is installed off a master version made about two years ago This was intended to be a quot known good quot version for long term use in a non-networked environment so no updates were supposedly needed What I'm seeing now Date / Time changes on system boot that has come is a small percentage of our install base about are having a problem with system date time being reset back to Dec ever time they turn the system on My first thought was CMOS Batteries needing to be replaced but as I said these are two different hardware Date / Time changes on system boot versions and not all were sourced at one time We would buy a dozen at a time and order more as needed And the problem cropped up all of a sudden when the year flipped over I'm not ruling CMOS replacement out but it seems less likely then a software firmware issue This is causing a problem as our Date / Time changes on system boot software has a license with two dates coded into it date of start and date of expiration Date of start is always days prior to the expiration date we set when we generate keys Hence if a customer has a valid license but the computer thinks it's it give an quot invalid license quot error and they can not use the software Currently I have customers either not reboot their systems or force a manual setting of the date time every time they boot up I am unable to recreate this is my lab with any of the laptops I have here I do have one system this is happening on in route to me for inspection Hopefully I'll see some type of system error in the logs telling me what is going on Any thoughts

A:Date / Time changes on system boot

Hi Z

Seems like you've got the most likely candidates in mind already - the CMOS batteries and the firmware. If it's a bug in the Bios, seems like that would be likely only on one platform - but not both.

Any chance that the customers might have local tampering going on? [Anyone possibly getting access to the system after hours]?

Best of luck

Hi,
Loooking at trying to run a batchfile to set time and date prior to vista login or boot like a bootloader menu. Can any one help.
I have one that runs at startup but need it sooner.
Reason: Bios Battery unsoldered and laptop battery no good(due to knackered AC input.
Could set this via bios each time but thats a pain in itself, thats why I use a batch file on startup but programs load prior to this and flag up faults( tried using startup managers to delay times)
Thanks in advance

Hi,

I have desktop with pretty old configuration (from 2005) which had been working perfectly till now, unless it started showing "CMOS: Invalid date/time setting" on every boot after switching on from mains.

If mains is powered on and only system is shut down and started, CMOS invalid date/time issues are no longer noticeable.

I have done this below steps so as to troubleshoot the issue:
1. Replaced the CMOS battery with new one
2. Clear the real time clock through jumper pins as provided in mother board user manual (ASUS K8N)
3. Loading with default values from BIOS and setting date/time through OS.

The above mentioned methods solve issue temporarily and the set information is getting lost when the mains is switched off.

Can anyone suggest what might be the problem?.

PS: I did not face this issue from past 10 yrs of usage even though I had replaced battery couple of times.

A:Invalid date/time setting on every boot

presuming that the problem is ONLY related to the Battery
check voltage with multimeter on OLD battery and new battery
generally 3V

if old battery is less - and new battery is correct - check contact for battery is clean usually small sprung type projection contacts base of battery
side contact to + is usually OK

That is the first job
those batteries must be 3+ t0 work 2.8 is no good
There is not gradual fade they are either specified voltage or they are flat as far as the system is concerned

Since installing SP3 my Dell Dimension 4600 resets date/time to 2004 (purchase date) and the boot drive reassigns to A: every time it is switched on.

I have uploaded the latest BIOS form Dell's website and tried a hotfix from MS. I re-set the date/time and boot drive in the setup utility in the BIOS on start-up, but these settings only last as long as the PC is left on.

I do not think this is a problem with the CMOS battery but with SP3. If I restore to SP2 then all seems fine.

A:HP Compaq gives time and date error then refuses to boot up

If the CMOS battery is dead, the computer may not boot.

A manual for repairing the laptop can be downloaded here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00622160.pdf
The procedure for getting to the battery can be found in section "6.24 System Board". It looks fairly involved, so I would not recommend attempting it unless you are confident you can put everything back together.

The battery isn't one that is readily available since it has leads attached to it. Here is one possible source: http://www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_kw=BIOS+CMOS+Battery+379812+001+3+for+HP+Compaq+NC6200+NC6230

Hello, Welcome to TSF.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

Please download and run the programs in the order listed below.

Download TDSSKiller.zip

>>> Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application.Click on the Start Scan button and wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue

If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue

If you are asked to reboot the computer to complete the process, click on the Reboot Now button. A report will be automatically saved at the root of the System drive ((usually C:\) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt" (for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt). Download ComboFix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this web page: A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

IMPORTANT....

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...

Morning All,

A long time reader and user of advice on the forum but in need of advice if possible.

Long story short but for work purposes I have to have a Win 7 dual boot system that I need to log in and change the time to USA regional time on one of my setups.

A number of times I have inadvertently forgot to change my time and date settings and either cant login to my secure network or when sending emails I get errors messages due to time and date settings.

Is there anyway I can add in a batch command on start up to setup the local date and time ?

Any advice much appreciated

A:Batch File for Windows Date and Time - Dual Boot

Hi Lewis, and welcome to Sevenforums,

What exact timezone are you after?

To change the current timezone setting to, for example, the Central America Standard Time (UTC-06:00), the command would be

Code:
tzutil /s "Central America Standard Time"
A list of valid timezone IDs can be viewed via tzutil /l.

Once you have the command you need, simply wrap the command into a batch file then place the script into the Startup folder.

Well the problem has nothing to do with Windows but I so got used to this Forum being the main resource of computer wisdom so here it goes I have an old Sony laptop PCG-VX P is the model number It worked very well for a Sony time bomb with won't today's date boot laptop - long time real hours battery time but eventually it was getting slower and slower until at some point it simply refused to boot I thought the problem was with the hard drive so I used the Spin-Rite to quot repair quot the drive reinstalled Windows yes it's XP and it still won't boot it gets to the welcome screen then I click on the user icon it shows Desktop for a while then the BSOD and it restarts so quick I can't say what's written on the blue screen at all I thought the thing was done Sony laptop time bomb - won't boot with today's date for But busy as I am it was gathering dust for some time until recently I decided to sell Sony laptop time bomb - won't boot with today's date it for parts as an alternative to throwing it away But having forgotten what Sony laptop time bomb - won't boot with today's date the real problem was I decided to boot it up and erase the hard drive again Of course the laptop's battery was drained completely I had to plug it in and the BIOS screen appeared asking me to set the clock I ignored it since I did not care to use it and miraculously everything worked - the machine booted up nicely worked fine OK I thought I'll change the time to normal did it in Windows and then rebooted - and it won't boot Next day I recall that this time change was the only thing I did so I got into BIOS and changed the year to - the laptop boots up nicely just complaining that the date is wrong before showing the Desktop So here's the summary of the trouble - the laptop boots OK and works OK if the date in BIOS is set to or anything thereabout while with today's date it shows BSOD right after the first glimpse of the Desktop and after that goes on the unending circle of rebooting Anybody heard anything like that Some battery going bad I'm kind of puzzled by this

A:Dell xps m1530 NVIDIA GPU

It is true that nVidia has always claimed that only some of the chips were defective.  Other sources claim they're all defective and that nVidia never redesigned the chip as would be required to fix the problem.
With a system that is 4+ years old it's likely impossible to differentiate a failure due to the design flaws in this chip from normal age-induced mortality.

I have a Dell XPS M1530. When it is plugged in, it seems to get kind of hot. The fans are still running, I can feel the air coming out and I can hear the fans running. I blew out the vent anyway. The real pain in the butt is that it will just shut off sometimes. I have not noticed the issue when it is not plugged in. It gives me no warning just POW! .... it's off. When I turn it back on it gives no indication of a bad shut down or anything. Sometimes it says that status monitor 3 has stopped working but, only sometimes. Any ideas?

I have an XPS M1530. It was displaying the message about battery can continue to charge but is reaching the end of its usable life - for about a year. I never operate the laptop without the AC adapter. I went to turn it on and it turned on and then immediately shut off. Then the AC light turned off. Now if I unplug the AC adapter from the computer, unplug the AC adapter from the wall and plug it back in the light will come on. Then as soon as I plug the AC adapter into the laptop the light goes off. Laptop does nothing/completely dead. I have 2 Dell AC adapters and both behave the same. I have tried it with and without the battery and same issue. Do you think a new battery will fix it? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi,

I am experiencing random BSOD's on my Dell XPS M1530 (T8300,4GB,8600M GT 256MB DDR3). The freezes happen while gaming or doing normal stuff (surfing the web, listening music etc.) I tried to verify what the problem is but couldn't identify the cause. I'm using Windows 7 x64 Professional which was freshly installed a week ago. I installed all up-to-date drivers that could be found on the net. The freezes occured even earlier, before the fresh install. I attach the dump from the BSOD which occured today. I hope you can help me find what the problem is.

This one is pretty straight foward, it is due to your intel wifi driver. I would download and install fresh copy of it

Has anyone who has a Dell XPS M1530 (laptop) installed the 64 bit version of Vista? If so, which drivers do you need?

My graphics card is nVidia geforce 8600m gt

I definitely know that a driver is required for this graphics card, but I'm not entirely sure where to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone has any other driver information with regards to the XPS M1530 then please make it known.

I have totally disassembled this laptop, replaced the entire LCD, and the power inverter, still all I get when it boots is a black screen, sometimes it kind of gets darker and you can see the black image split in the middle? Although I can hit FN and LCD to an external monitor and that works fine?

Im not sure what to replace next? Could it be the LCD cable or is it most likely a bad mobo?

Are the video channels separate, the LCD from the external monitor port?

Any help would be great, as this is driving me crazy!

A:Dell XPS m1530 problems

This could be one of several problems, but assuming you can't get to your Vista desktop anymore, (is that right?) when you power on the pc, tap away at the F8 key, quickly, and straight after pressing power button.
Do you see a blackscreen with white text? If yes, scroll down with cursor key to the line 'Use last known good configuration' and press 'enter'.
But without knowing any more, your problem could be, a faulty RAM board, (5 minutes to swap in a new one, and not expensive), or a failing Hard drive, not good, or other main circuit board problem. It's not so likely to be the battery though, but try the F8 key (Safe mode) idea first.

Hi guys, I was just wondering, if anyone knew about a newer firmware or driver software that I could find for the Optical Drive of my Dell XPS M1530.

The problem is that I'm testing Windows 7 SP1 (V 1.53, btw). Yeah... Yeah... I know... Since is not an official release I can't hope for it to work or have them available, etc... etc...

But, I felt a considerable speed up in my system, and almost all bugs and slowdowns that my Win 7 64 bit had, were resolved, or were not presented.

I really need a driver that can actually support it, if exists, if not, well... got to wait for the main release... ()

This is the optical device:

Happy New Year!

OK, I have a 2-3 year old Dell XPS M1530 laptop, which is crashing.

It was running Vista Home Premium 32-bit OEM originally, but I upgraded it to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Retail some time ago with no problems.

Since then I had problems with the internal Intel WiFi 4965AGN disconnecting and dropping packets, so having tried upgrading the driver, I replaced it with an Intel WiFi 5300. So I suspect the 5300 is the likely problem.

Let me know what you find, and thanks in advance.

These are all STOP 0x124 errors. As such, it's the CPU telling Windows what the error is - and that just doesn't provide any significant information for us to work with. The errors are usually either a hardware problem or a compatibility issue.

Also, The Windows Debugging Tools aren't able to access symbols for your operating system files (in particular NTOSKRNL.EXE / NTKRNLMP.EXE / NTKRNLPA.EXE / NTKRPAMP.EXE) from the Microsoft Symbol Server - so that makes debugging them difficult if not impossible.

Please do the following:
- activate/validate the Windows installation at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine
- run sfc.exe /scannow to replace any problem files
- open a support incident with Microsoft to see if they can fix the missing symbols issue ( http://support.microsoft.com/ph/14019 )
- If that doesn't fix it, then wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows
- don't use "leaked"/torrent builds

I'd suggest uninstalling all traces of Nero 7 - it's not compatible with Win7 according to this site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/com...ero%207&page=3

Also, please remove or update these older drivers that were loaded at the time of the crash. Don't use Windows Update or the Update drivers function of Device Manager.
Please use the following instructions to locate the most currently available drivers to replace the one's that you uninstall OR remove:

Quote:

How To Find Drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html

Here's the older drivers. Please pay particular attention to any dated 2007 or earlier:

Hi I have a Dell XPS M1530. Sometimes it boots, other times Windows appears to be loading but the screen is black. When it boots I am informed that the battery needs replacing. I have no problem replacing the batteries but I am not sure this is the solution. If the laptop is plugged into a mains supply I would expect it to boot regardless of whether the batteries needs replacing or is this not the case?

thanks
Fatima

I'm working with a Dell Xps M1530 that I was told had a black screen issue. I have booted and find the screen comes up normal except at the bottom. Along the bottom, the screen shows rays of light extending upward. As you can tell the system is Win 7 Prof. I am wondering if replacing the inverter should take care of this or would the screen be necessary to correct the problem? I believe the inverter is failing when it gets hot, causing the black screen issue and the light ray appearance may be related to it as well but I don't want to replace the one item and need two. I also don't want money to be spent if it isn't needed.
I tried to attach a photo but at 1.87mb, it is too large.

A:Flash bios for Dell XPS m1530

You can't flash the BIOS on a machine that won't post, and that's unlikely to be the source of your problem anyway.
You seem to be saying it won't boot from a CD/DVD.
You could try re-seating the hard drive, but this isn't looking good.
Have there been other, previous problems? Have you ever dropped or kicked this machine? Have you tried booting with the battery removed?

These crashes were caused by your network, and wifi drivers. I would reinsatll a fresh copy and run a system file check
to do that type cmd in search?right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow (not the space between the sfc and "/")

Let us know if you need help with this

Hi,
I just got a motherboard replacement for my DELL XPS M1530 (not replaced from DELL) after the previous graphics card was cooked.
It had been three years since the machine was working fine when I started giving some problems and I had to get the motherboard replaced.
The garphics are fine now but sometimes it reaches 100% CPU Usage point and the fan starts running more than often.
During this period I noticed, I am usually not performing any intensive tasks( normal tasks such as browser etc.)
What could be the reason for the high CPU usage?

A:High CPU Usage (DELL XPS M1530)

One way to find out is to open the task manager, click on the process tab and look down the list to see which processes are using the cpu power. Then google that process,it is of course possible that what you find is a windows process using the cpu. Antivirus programs and firewalls can cause this to happen. You often have to use a process of elimination to find the cause.

I have a Dell M1530 running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. My touchpad \ mouse has stopped working. The pointer just sits in the middle of the screen. I even tried to use a USB mouse, that didn't work either. I got the newest driver for it from Dell, installed it & still nothing. When I check for it in the Device Manager the Mouse \ Touchpad has a yellow ! on it. Checking the driver for it, it says windows can't load the driver cause it is corrupt or missing (code 39). I can barely navigate around on it! Please help me! I just want my mouse \ touchpad to work again! I don't want to have to do a complete reinstall, I'm not that smart & would probably mess it up.

A:Dell M1530 Touchpad / Mouse

Hi, Any issue with the Touchpad driver or hardware would have no connection to the USB mouse problem. The problem if both are not working sound like a windows issue. With the USB mouse plugged in does it show up the Device Manager? It should show up and load drivers that are provided by Windows. Have you tested the USB ports to see if anything else plugged into them is working?Have You tried System Restore to go back in Time to when the Mouse / Touchpad worked? System Restore should be accessed by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Our Tutorial on using it is hereWindows Vista System Restore GuideIntroduction to System RestoreSystem Restore is a system recovery feature of Windows that creates snapshots, or restore points, of the state of your computer at various intervals or before you perform a certain task. These restore points can then be used to restore your computer back to the state it was in when they were taken. When these restore points are created, and restored, the only files affected are the Windows Registry, programs, and system files. Your data such as spreadsheets, documents, images, and music remain untouched between restores. You may be wondering why you would want to restore your computer to a previous point. The reason being that there comes a time in every computer user's life that they install a new program, install a new driver, or just turn on the computer and find it no longer works as it did the day before. You have no idea why, can't resolve the problems, and are left with two options. You can either backup your data, reinstall the operating system, and then reinstall all your applications or you can restore your computer to a previous snapshot in the hopes that the problems will now be gone. By using System Restore to restore your computer to a previously known working state you can save considerable time or money compared to reinstalling the entire computer.Good LuckRoger

Hi I ve got a XPS M Vista Dell crash up on booting M1530 XPS SP and I have recently experienced some problems This morning the screen would remain black while the laptop made the usual start up sounds and then did nothing The power button remained lit After some googling I had found a solution heating the gpu I found the info in a thread on this forum So I opened up my laptop but I was not able to remove the heat sink a screw that just wouldn t open so I Dell XPS M1530 crash on booting up determined through pictures where the gpu was and heated the area of the heat sink under which the gpu lies with a hair dryer I did this till the area above the gpu was too hot to touch Afterwards I started my laptop up and I didn t have the black screen it just booted up as usual However before I got past the dell screen it crashed I assumed it was overheating but after waiting some time I booted up again and got past the dell screen and had a boot up screen asking me to do a diagnostic and recovery thingie because there might be a software or hardware failure It proceeded to do this but after some time during the test it crashed again After booting it immediately back up it crashed before I got past the Dell screen After waiting a long time I tried again and this time it got further through the diagnostic test but eventually crashed again Now when I try the load bar on the dell screen goes extremely slowly and the laptop crashes before it gets past that stage it crashes slowly if I didn t try to start it before rapidly if I just experienced a crash Sorry for the long post but does anybody have an idea what I can do about this nbsp

heated the area of the heat sink under which the gpu lies with a hair dryer. I did this till the area above the gpu was too hot to touch.Click to expand...

Where did you get the advise to do this You should have come here first for some honest advise.

Heat is not a good thing for any electronic device. What you have done may have finished off a processor that was already half baked. I doubt if there is a way to recover from this other than replacing the GPU.

When you quote the GPU are you sure you are not confusing this with CPU. As far as I can see from your sytems manual, on the Dell site, the gahics card has no heat sink so you probably cooked your CPU. The heat sink is there for just one reason, to get rid of heat.

You cant replace graphics cards for laptops. But I may have a solution. I would have first thought that this was a screen issue, but when you hooked it up to another monitor that idea was gone. This indicates that invalid system memory has been referenced.

Usual causes are a bug in a device driver, hardware related memory issues, corrupt NTFS volume, anti-virus software.

If they are, temporarily remove the device to ensure the camera is not the cause of the crashes.

sptd.sys is listed and loaded in your drivers list, this is the SCSI Pass Through Direct Host - Daemon Tools (known BSOD issues with Win7). Remove this driver with the following tool: DuplexSecure - Downloads

If Daemon Tools is installed (I don't see the driver listed, but just in case) remove Daemon Tools ASAP as well.

I see you have Norton installed, I am going to recommend temporarily removing Norton with the removal tool and replacing it with Microsoft Security Essentials for troubleshooting purposes:

I had to reinstall WinXP on my Dell XPS M1530, and now Windows doesn't detect the bluetooth unit. The symbol in the line with power buttons etc is lighted though. I have software from before, but could only copy, not install it. What I find works only in Vista. Broadcom's own bluetooth software does neither detect a bluetooth nor work without that. In the control panel there is no icon for bluetooth, even though Windows help suggests exactly that.

Does anyone know how to do that? It worked before, but now I can't figure out how, even after hours of googling...

Hi all I hope someone can figure out the issue with my machine Here is the setup Dell XPS m Current OS Windows Ultimate x Downloaded from MSDN via subscription Original OS Windows Vista Home x Here is the issue I upgraded my laptop to W with a clean - Windows Dell - x64 Ultimate BSODs 7 m1530 XPS install and downloaded most BSODs - Dell XPS m1530 - Windows 7 Ultimate x64 drivers from Dell the vista bit drivers Additionally i installed an upgraded video card driver from nVidia Upgraded the BIOS and installed some Dell specific applications Everything seemed to work fine for a while I am not sure how long - A few months maybe and then I started getting really random BSOD's It didn't matter what I was doing on the machine I also seemed to get every kind of error imaginable During that time and increasingly more BSODs - Dell XPS m1530 - Windows 7 Ultimate x64 frequently I started hearing a sort of clicking sound or maybe more pinging - it's hard to describe The crashes sometimes coincided with me hearing this noise but not all the time Eventually my PC would not boot at all and I called Dell who said it was a motherboard problem I am still under warranty so they BSODs - Dell XPS m1530 - Windows 7 Ultimate x64 came out and changed it A few days after I started getting crashes again About a month ago getting fed up I reinstalled Windows again and updated the essential drivers instead of all of them like I did before From Dell I installed the sound bluetooth and touchpad drivers installed the quickset application so the media keys would work and installed the graphics card driver from nVidia Everything else seems to work fine except that there are two devices in device manager that do not have drivers installed They are labelled Base System Device and Unknown Device I still get BSODs but it seems not as frequently I have attached the BSOD info since the last install Hope I've given enough info to help solve the issue Please let me know if more info is required Thanks

I have been trying to repair my optical drive for my Dell XPS M1530 laptop which has Windows 7 Professional and I am unable to make it to work. My discs keeps getting stuck in there and I already purchased two identical optical drives and still get the same results. Any ideas of what might be wrong? I think I will just get a little break before I continue working with this problem.

Hi,
I have a Dell XPS M1530 which I installed Windows 7 Professional (SP1) x86 from MSDN.

Most times when the laptop is going to sleep from a power management sleep after x minutes, or closing the lid, this happens:
- The system appears to hang. There's no hard disk activity and nothing recorded in the event viewer around that time.
- The screen is black and doesn't wake up
- Capslock/numlock don't light up when toggled

And I have to hold the power button to turn the system off. When I turn it back on there's no evidence of a bugcheck or error in any of the system event logs.

What's the best way of starting to debug this issue and track down what's causing this?

Thanks!

A:Dell XPS M1530 becomes completely unresponsive when entering sleep

Hi breathing ,

My name is Sukanya and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.
In regards to teh issue you have reported ,I suggest you update the system BIOS and teh video driver once .If that does not fix we can try reinstakkin Windows 7 once again just to rule out the OS .If that alos do not fix the issue ,it could be a hard ware fault and a video card replacement may be required.
I am attaching the link from teh bios and the graphics card driver.

Please let me know how it is working out.

Most likely possible. I installed Win10 on a Dell Studio 17/1747 a couple of days ago that had Win7. Have also installed it on 2 Dell Inspiron 15 Notebooks, just finished one. One thing to watch for is perhaps the need for updated/Win10 compatible drivers for Wireless Network and, if you have it, Bluetooth Wireless [both of my 15s needed it] but check support.dell.com with your Service Tag to be sure.

I wasn't quite sure where to post this, so I'll try here. I have installed W7 RC and the Dell MD BluRay software and it works except it wraps the video around the screen. IOW the left side of the video starts about 1/3 of the way from the left side of the screen and the right of the video wraps to the left side of the screen.

I have tried Arcsoft TMT3 and PowerDVD and the video is fine, but no sound from TMT3 and PowerDVD spiked my CPU to 100% 5 times watching a movie yesterday. Had to completely shut down the program and restart and then it would run fine for a while.

If anyone has any suggestions or knows of a Dell upadte, I would be gratefull.

I too am having the same problem. When I first got machine, it did not have error. However, since I have reinstalled OS, I now have video wrapping from right to left around window. Changes to settings does not fix problem.

Greetings and thanks in advance for your help Awhile back I formatted my Windows PCs to show ddd dd-mmm-yyyy on my taskbar clock This worked happily on my desktop and laptop for months maybe even a year Now probably starting in the past couple days if not today on one of those two PC's this format will no longer display It is Okay on the other PC What has changed that the taskbar clock space to Time Taskbar fit format date area expanding Date desired / quit used to expand to fit the quot short date quot format but now it will no longer expand - and instead Taskbar Time / Date area quit expanding to fit desired date format just refuses to display the date at all NOTE Taskbar Time / Date area quit expanding to fit desired date format I've verified the issue by testing shorter formats -- short formats like quot ddd quot show up correctly Only if you request a longer format will the date not display - evidently because it is too long for the clock area Additional Notes that may help quot Working quot pc is running build PC with too small a clock space that won't expand -- Build Other differences Notification Action center Icon is left of clock on the working PC - Right of clock on the non-working Right- Clicking on task bar gives quot properties quot option on working PC -- But quot Settings quot option on the non-working I don't want to prejudice responses - but clearly the implication to me is that some recent OS update is most likely the culprit Thank You

Hi,

I recently ran into some computer trouble on my laptop and was hoping to receive some input as to what the problem may be. For about one day now, my laptop, which is a Dell XPS M1530, has been cutting off on random intervals (sometimes on the order of minutes to as much as an hour), and I cannot seem to figure out why. What we know is this:

-The fan is still fully functional
-The computer is not overheating
-No viruses detected after doing a scan (we thought that viruses may be a possibility)
-The power supply is functional
-The motherboard is obviously not damaged, as the computer can still work

I would greatly appreciate any assistance!

Thanks,

~Trav.~

I am looking to set up a macro or formula that basically inserts the current time when a cell is filled SO:

when a2:a100 is populated with any thing then the corresponding C cell will be populated with the time.

AND

when e2:e1000 is populated wiith anything then the corresponding D Cell will be populated.

Currently I am using this macro.
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
If Target.Cells.Count > 1 Then Exit Sub
If Not Intersect(Target, Range("A6:A100")) Is Nothing Then
With Target(1, 4)
.Value = Time
.EntireColumn.AutoFit
End With
End If
End Sub

which works great for the A and C cells

but it does not work for the other one.. how do i add and modify this so all my needs are met.
I need another 2 sets of 2 macros accross the sheet for time entry.

I have a Date/Time field that I need converted to just a Time field.

It comes back with 2/11/12 0:00:00

I need just the 2/11/12

I thought about changing it to a text field but I think there will be an issue with the month because it does not bring back a 0 in from the months with only 1 digit.

This table that I am creating is being sent to a txt file and that is where I see the issue. It looks good in Access, but not the txt file.

Any suggestions?

Initial inspection shows it to possibly be a conflict between an AVG filter driver and a Peerblock filter driver. Check for updates on both of them, as I'm seeing them (especially Peerblock) being pretty dated. Note that you may even need to remove one of them, as by design they both operate on the same principle and will clash against each other when handling the same resources.

I have two identical Dell XPS for my kids They use mainly for steam games Both running the Windows AU Today on one XPS Long Time 8700 Boot Dell of them by son said a message popped up and asked to stop a service and he clicked yes Then all Dell XPS 8700 Long Boot Time there was was a gray screen and mouse pointer He came and got me The pointer would move but nothing else responded So I did a power shut down On reboot the machine took around seconds from seeing the dell logo to the sign on screen This seemed very long So I rebooted the other machine to see how long it takes and it was only seconds from the dell logo to the sign on screen I do not know if the Dell XPS 8700 Long Boot Time long boot time has been going on or just started with this issue I ran sfc scannow and it said no issues I remember in September a year ago I had an issue with this machine where on power on all I would get is the spinning dots at the Dell logo and it would not boot into windows I even let it sit there for hours and just spinning dots I even tried new install of windows where the machine would let me install new windows but after updates the same thing happened with the spinning dots After a tons of troubleshooting a dell tech recommended pulling the cmos battery I did that and from then on it booted fine So since the long boot time did not seem right I pulled the cmos battery again waited seconds put it back in and booted into bios change the clock not sure if I had to but did and then reboot and now after the dell logo it gets to the log in screen after a few seconds like the other Any idea why this happened Why I needed to pull the cmos battery to get the short boot times Both XPS machines are on an APC battery backup Just curious if there is something defective with this particular machine thanks

Hey guys, I got a new Dell XPS 13 9350, did a clean install of windows 10 pro. windows update installed all drivers for me. Computer is working well, but the boot time is on the slow side. It takes about 23 seconds to get to windows login screen from clicking the power button.
After clicking the power button the screen remains black for about 8-9 seconds, then the DELL logo shows up. After which is starts loading windows. I've seen some videos like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XjdXy0yORU There it boots up insanely fast. It will show the Dell logo after only a second or 2.
I've updated my BIOS to the latest version. Fast Boot in bios is set to "minimum", so it loads the least amount of checks. What could be causing the long wait before showing the Dell logo?

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
There are a few steps that you have to try to isolate the issues.
Step 1 – First of all, double-check that your version of Windows is not infected with any viruses.
Step 2 – If you are given the all-clear by your anti-virus software of choice, its worth having a look through the Windows Task Manager.
Step 3 - The Windows key and R as soon as your desktop appears.Type in services.msc in the Run box and hit the Enter key.f one of the processes is dragging its feet, simply Right-Click the item, Open them and then change their Settings from Default – to Delayed Start. Then save and reboot the system.
Thanks
Robin
