Sharing media player

Q: Sharing media player

I haven't been able to find any info concerning sharing the media player of one computer with another on a local network. Can this be done? if so, how?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Sharing media player

Programs play on a computer. A media player is a program.

You can move a program to anothe rcomputer but not 'share' the execution of the program between computers.

You can share data files that contain music, video, etc. but they will need to be played on a single computer.

Well, I'm not sure what to do here. Up until a few days ago I was sharing my media with all computers on my network on my wireless router.

Now when I log into windows and open WMP 11 it says that I am no longer sharing media, would you like to turn on sharing? So I say yes and confirm to share my media to all devices on my network, mainly my PS3.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled it (well it actually just reverted back). I also checked to make sure that Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service is set to automatic in Admin tools. And also checked windows firewall that it allows the service.

So I am at a loss here, I don't know how to get my media sharing capabilites back. I know its not my PS3, as I am sharing media from my laptop right now. Any suggestions?

Thanks High

Sonnyboy quote:
PS3 and Vista Sharing Sorted
Found it. Disabled IPSEC Services and rebooted my router and hey presto media sharing in vista with PS3. Although I had disabled this before and restarted my computer I had not rebooted the router (ie turned it off and on again). This was the important thing on my set up and I missed it.

Funny thing is IPSEC Services do not have to be disabled in XP.

Hope this helps someone.

This actually worked for my Windows XP, I am now able to share, but is this a safe thing to have turned off?

Every since January th of this year I have been trying to fix a very annoying issue with windows media player How It Started Back in January my dad's computer constantly kept freezing over and over due to him having way to many podcast on his computer I'm the only one who knew how to fix it from crashing and so I tried to delete some of the memory off the computer however when the memory was low I noticed sharing turn Windows refuses Player media Media on to that a few programs including media player were not functioning correctly I was able to fix them but then I noticed that media player's entire library was missing which Windows Media Player refuses to turn on media sharing made me think if I restarted the computer it would fix it Sadly it didn't but I was able to find tutorials on how to restore the library back to MP but the thing is before I attempted that I went into media player with administrator on in hopes it Windows Media Player refuses to turn on media sharing would make a change Of course it didn't Windows Media Player refuses to turn on media sharing but now there's a issue that I face and I keep running into dead ends Every single time I try to turn on media sharing in the WMP library when I check both options and then click ok it doesn't do anything No matter how many times I try to press it nothing happens and also what I find strange is that the ok button has a administrator prompt shield on it now Kind of like it's trying to ask for permission but fails before it can do that The solutions I have tried I have tried dozens of solutions and yet none of them fix the issue I tried using regedit exe and tried fixing it's registry but that didn't do anything I tried fully resetting WMP entirely but that doesn't work either nor does using service msc The only lead I have that something may be broken is that when I looked inside service WMP Network Sharing Service cannot startup At this point I'm pretty burned out of ideas and nbsp this may be the most confusing bug I've ever faced And now since Media sharing doesn't work I can't stream music to my xbox If you somehow know the solution please tell me

Hey everyone,

I am having troubles sharing my Windows Media Player 11 library on my Vista machine with my Windows XP computer.

Both players are sharing media the same way and automatically allowing new devices to connect.

My roommates computer see's both libraries as well as my Vista Computer. The XP machine does not see the shared library.

I have Trend Micro PC Cillin on my Vista machine. It is connected by cat5 to a Linksys Wireless router in gateway mode.

On my XP machine i have AVG antivirus with no firewall installed. It is connect to the Linksys wirelessly - bu so is my roomates laptop.

On both machines i have the latest .net framwork installed and on the xp machine i installed windows media connect.

I cant figure it out, i think it is a software problem and not a physical network problem.

any ideas?

I'm trying to share my windows media player library that is on my win 7 pc with my xp laptop.

I can navigate from my laptop to folders on my win 7 pc and play files that way but I'm trying to get the library option working.

Both computers are in the same workgroup and are both visable in the same workgroup from my xp laptop. However if I go into network on my win7 pc I can see the laptop in the computer section but not in the media device section.

When i then go into the sharing options on the win7 windows media player i can not see the xp laptop so I can't allow sharing.

I guess the problem is that my xp laptop is only showing up as a computer and not a media device? anyone know why this is?

I have turned of my firewall to check that and it has no effect.

A:media sharing in windows media player 11

You can't share Library's with any computer other than Windows 7. Library sharing can only work if all the machines in the LAN are Windows 7. Although you should be able to stream and share your music using Workgroups.

You should be able to share the WMP files by making these adjustments. Click on more media options to allow for media sharing with your XP machine.

I have a home computer network between two computers. I would like to share my media from Windows Media Player 11 with my other computer. The music that I would like to share is the main computer that has the router and all connected to it. I know that under the options in Media Player, under the library tab there is a configure sharing button. I click that, check the "share my media to:" but my other computer connected to the network is not listed. Is there something I have to do with firewall on either computer? Please help.

I am using XP and have been trying to get my media to share to my xbox 360 and at first the system said I had an ip address issue, even though I could connect to the internet. Now however, it won't find the pc. Upon going to Window Media Player's library/media sharing section, I am prompted with this message: Media sharing has been turned off because a required Windows setting or component has changed. I have tried all of the obvious quick fixes and nothing works, does anyone have any suggestions as Microsoft is less than helpful telling me something, somewhere has changed? Thank you.

Is there any technology that allows the sharing of media player?
Such as, I am watching a movie on DVD or VCD and my sister can use her computer to view what I am watching. I can send pics by e-mail, I can send streaming video, videos created by webcam, etc, so I wondered if media player sharing was possible. Or copy a DVD somehow on a file and send to my sister so she can open that file and view the same DVD on her media player.
thanks for replies

A:media player sharing?

You can copy DVD's only if you have a DVD-RW, or DVD-R. And, a burning program, such as Nero.

is she on the same network, or across the Web? Also, which version of WMP and Windows are you using?

I have four PC on my network, two XP (XP-1, XP-2) and Two Vista (Vista-1, Vista-2). All are up-to-date. All running Media Player 11.

I am trying to share (serve) media mainly from XP-2.

When I open the Library | Media Sharing dialog in Media Player on either of the Vista PCs it lists all three other PC in "Share my media to:" and sharing works fine.

When I open the dialog on either XP PC; I only see the Vista PCs and not the XP PCs. Since I am mainly trying to see the media on XP-1 served by XP-2 this is very frustrating.

On the Vista PCs you can show the Entire Network and it lists the Media Servers on both XP PCs.

I have tried all the obvious things like turning off firewalls etc.

I had WMP sharing setup just perfect for the last year or so. But in the last few months I had a few friends bring over their xboxes and so the devices on my media sharing list got a but out-of-date with a lot of entries, so deleted them "assuming" I could refresh the list.

Now all the devices are gone and I cannot find a way to refresh the list and just see the devices actually on my network right now. Anyone know how to do this?

Sorry if there's a post here about it already, I kept getting errors trying to search the forum.

Hey guys, I'm having issues with Windows Media Player 11 sharing media. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit. I've actually never had this problem before. For some reason, my media is not being added to the shared files on Media Player. When I add the folders that I want to share, it shows that it found like 7,000 different files, but when you look at the "added" tab, it says 0. I've been using Windows Media Player 11 to share with my Xbox 360 and PS3 for the last two years and never had this problem. I recently did a complete restore on my PC, and it hasn't worked right since. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Windows Media Player 11 - share my songs?

Can you tell me how to share the music on my main pc with a laptop that is networked to it please.
Went to - Library - media sharing But could not see the laptop (although it is visible in Network places)
Should I be doing something else?
Also do I have to add all the music files to the laptop? As a large folder Or can I just click on the links??

A:Windows Media Player 11 and sharing my music

Why don't you try sharing the files on the network. If your computer is networked properly then they should show up in network places. Right click the file, then click on the sharing tab and click share on network. (These instructions might be wrong as im not booted in windows right now.) If they are all in the same directory, i.e. My Music, then you can just click play all when you navigate to the folder in My Network Places. Alternatively you could select the files you want right click them and click play with windows media player.

The point of Windows Media Sharing is not to be some sort of P2P application, but rather like a radio station that you can tune into specific tracks. If you don't already own the music you're trying to burn then it's really not a legal practice you're getting into.

Vista displays, occasion (and I havent worked out WHAT occasions yet):

"windows media player network sharing service stopped working and was closed" - followed by some bulls?$t about windows informing me of a solution when it becomes available

This pop up appears relentlessly - about once every 30 seconds, and i can see the system performance hitting 100% CPU for 5 seconds or so each time it does.

I did what is suggested on here - ie disable the service - and it STILL comes up with the eror. Any ideas????

A:"windows media player network sharing service stopped working and was closed"

As an addendum - I think this happens when I'm doing any type of install - e.g. windows update, service pack, etc

I have a problem opening any media file in any of the Media Players viz., RealOne Player build or my Windows Media Player 10.
Whenever I open the above mentioned Media Players on my system, their interface opens up and after I open and select any media (usually audio) file, the player keeps on connecting to the file and takes more than 1 minute and above in opening and playing any valid and good media file, may it be a .wma or .mp3 audio file.
How to fasten the dead slow speed of the players?

We are having a problem on a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine running Windows media player 10. It says "this version of media player is incompatible" when you try and open it. We have tried removing version 10, and putting on 9 but you get the same problem. This happens if you download the install file from the website or install WMP from the WindowsUpdate site. Has anyone come across this before, or got any ideas on how to get WMP to work?

Thanks a lot,

I have two pcs on a wireless network connected to a cable modem. One pc (Thinkpad) has no problem playing internet radio stations through wmp. The other one (Dell 4100) has problems with streaming audio. It can connect to the radio station fine (or download the audio file in either format) but then it keeps buffering while it's playing. I've tried just about everything I can find to fix it: editing the registry (MSoft tech note,) changing the network settings, changing the buffer rate but nothing seems to work. There is more than enough bandwidth to handle the flow of data, plus my cable company says it's not them (of course.) Any help would be really appreciated!

I've been having problems listening to music on windows media player and watching flash videos. The playback is choppy (sometimes gets stuck and generally bounces around) but also my system seems to take an age to start up and is slow.

I've run disk-defragmentor, scandisk, spybot, adaware, AVG etc. But no luck.

This has come about since I've put about 20GB of music onto my laptop (I still have around 47GB of 70GB free). However, when Windows Media Player is not open the system still runs slowly and I have no luck running flash videos.

The only possible solution I can think of is deleting the music but I'm a bit hesitatant to do so because it took me ages to put it on!

Anyway, thanks very much for any help you can give me!

1. what are they?
2. where to get them?
3. how to use that to convert the file to some other format?
4. what formats do Real Player and Windows Media Player support?
4a. Is there another downloadable DVD player that will play the AVI file as is?
5. I also tried to burn this AVI file using Nero but when I tried to drag the file to the proper place, I encountered problems. What could be the issue here?
6. I have been told in another forum that my CD burner can burn a DVD file on DVD media if the format is proper. What format is needed? Is this another codec issue? (Nero says it needs AVI and that is what my file is).

Now use open with

ok (as you my know by know i rarther hate windows media player)

well basicly i have loads of .mp3 files in my Docs and my music folders, there not all music files, when windows media sees them it ads them to libary, Annoyingly, i manages to stop it downloading extra info like album art (cos its soo stupid, it gets it wrong like 95% of the time lol) but it keeps adding every thing back to the libary even if i delete them from it, its soo annoying any!! surgestions please?

A:Solved: Stop Windows Media Player Automaticly ading media files to libary

In WMP go to Tools > Options and uncheck all the boxes in the Player tab, Privacy tab and Library tab.

In the Library tab click on Monitor Folders and set the top part to "My personal folders", then click on Advanced Options.

Set all the folders to "Ignore". Unfortunately you can't set the Rip folder to "Ignore" so for that go to the Rip music tab, where it says "Rip music to this location" click on Change and create an empty folder somewhere. Then just never add any music files to that folder.

Then delete everything out of the WMP library and it should remain empty.

Does anyone have any ideas how the info is different (I thought Media Centre read the Media Player Library) and how to fix it?

General technique:
1) Edit the tags in Windows
2) Drag the album to WMP11 to check
3) Fix the tag info in Windows where needed
4) Redrag to WMP11 and check again
5) Repeat 3 and 4 as necessary
6) Open VMC and pray!

Problem 1: Inconsistent/duplicate albums
You didn't mention the file types, but I'll assume they're MP3s. In this case the problems is likely in the tags. Try this procedure:

1) Select all of the tracks of the album inside of Windows
2) Right click and select "Properties", then "Details" to bring up the Tag editor
3) Rename the Album Artist to something different like "a" and hit OK
4) Do this again but this time rename the Album Artist back to the correct name and hit OK

This will clear any inconsistencies in the Album Artist which seem to happen when tags are downloaded from the internet. Remember that tag info is a community thing, their is no quality control.

If the problem remains, try the same process for the Album name.

Problem 2: Album artwork in VMC
This can be really tricky, I have one album that I cannot fix this problem! But try this:

1) Inside of WMP11, right click the first track and select Advanced Tag Editor, then Pictures. Make sure that the picture is correct.
2) If it is not, delete it and Add the correct picture ( has great album art).
3) If the art is missing on on the tracks, then you should be able to drag the JPG art over the album icon in WMP and it will add it to every track.
4) Try deleting all of the non-music files in the album's folder in Windows. These are hidden so you will need to go into "Folder and Search Options", then "View" and select "Show hidden files and folders" and deselect "Hide protected operating system files".
5) Also, try deleting the Windows Media Center Art Cache while you have hiddne files and folders viewable. They are in one or both of these locations:
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\ehome\Art Cache
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player\Art Cache\LocalMLS

Overall, getting your Music library to catalog and display properly is really hard work, but eventually it will work.

So for some background I basically stream music pictures and Media Windows Content Streaming Media Xbox 360 to via Player an video content from my computer to an Xbox in the lounge room for my family to enjoy This has worked for quite a long time with Windows I installed Windows Consumer Preview today and got settled in with it and indexed my libraries with Windows Media player so this could resume But to my dismay this doesn't seem to work in Windows I have each folder and hard drive shared on windows for network use I have a little experience from LANs in this area I have enabled all streaming options in WMP that I know of and the entirety of my library has been fully indexed This is WMP and everything I possibly know of is up to date I haven't got the Homegroup feature active as I never had to use this before The only other thing I have noticed that has changed is this A little green icon that in windows would appear on top of the xboxs I'm assuming this means something On the Xbox end it used to display the Libraries such as 'Recorded TV' 'Music' 'TV Shows' 'Movies' and other things but now when Streaming Media Content to an Xbox 360 via Windows Media Player I try to access video content it gives me a folder called 'Videos' which contains nothing Does anybody know of any solutions

I have just bought on-line, will only transfer music files with Windows Media Player 10.   The instructions for the music player, Samsung YP-Z5, says that you can only transfer files to the player when Windows Media Player 10 is installed on the pc, which you have to instal with the installation CD.  I have Windows Media Player 11 and Media Monkey on my pc, that I use for my other music player and Windows Media Player 12 and Media Monkey on my laptop.  Does that mean that the version 11, I have on my pc will be rolled back to 10 then? isn't that going to mess up my music.  I don't understand why it is an older version of Windows Media Player as I can't use it on my laptop. Can anyone help please.

I'm running Windows XP.

When I'm looking at cd's on Amazon and I try to play a sample of a cd it doesn't work no matter if I choose Media Player or Real Player.
Both tell me they can't play the file.

But they work if I put in a cd in the drive.

Anyone know why they wouldn't play from internet ?

I have tried everything to get Windows Media Player 9 to work in Mini Player mode, but to no avail. I have followed the Help instructions, i.e:

To use the new Mini-Player

1. Right-click an empty area of the Windows taskbar (such as below the system clock), point to Toolbars, and then select Windows Media Player. This step enables the feature and must only be performed once. The Player will dock the mini-Player in your Windows taskbar whenever you minimize it.

2. Minimize the Player to view the Mini-Player.

This does not work. I have Windows XP Pro SP1, and Windows Media Player Can anyone help ?

This is not an OS question so I am going to move it, which hopefully you will get better responses.

My computer crashed today. An error stating that my windows files were missing or corrupt. Quick call to PC world who talked me through a system restore.
Only problem now is, I cant get my MP3 player software to work. its a Samsung YP-Z5F. I plug it in via USB, the computer detects it and then pops up a bubble saying an error occured during installation and my hardware may not work properly. And it doesn't! I cant get windows media player or the samsung software to recognise the player is plugged in.
How can I get it back to working fine the way it was before the system restore?

A:Cant Get My Mp3 Player To Work. Media Player Wont Recognise It!

Have it sorted now. Seems i had some archaic version of Windows Media player after the restore. Nothing a reupgrade to version 11 hasn't fixed :-)

I am running Vista and am having a problem with Windows Media Player 11.

When I try to close Media player by clicking on the X on the top right hand corner or selecting exit, I get the following message in a popup box.

Would you like to hide the player instead of closing it? Yes/No

The answer is yes, but it would just have just closed for me in the past. Is there some option somewhere where I can turn this question off?

I have noticed that if Media Player is open but no music has been selected to play and I close the program, Media Player will close correctly without the question being asked.

Anybody have any idea?

I recently reformatted my computer, and since the reformat, whenever I try to play a CD in Windows Media Player, I get the following message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer. It may be in use by another program or it may not be functioning properly."

A:I'm unable to play a CD player in Windows Media Player

You may need to re-install your sound driver.
Look in Device Manager to see if it's missing.

I am a music downloader.
It used to be that WMP12 would update the mp3 music folders to where the folder contents would read as follows:

01 'Track Name'
02 'Track Name'
03 'Track Name'

and so on...

This is no longer the case. WMP will not update my media library files, although it says it does. I have cleared the cache, cleared all .wmdb files, and have completely removed all 9000 plus songs and have them reloaded. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled WMP12 to no avail.

I can manually correct the files myself, but I shouldn't have to.
What setting am I missing that needs to be set so my media library will automatically update?

The window says that it is going to download video license ver 3.412

My OS: Windows Vista 32-bit SP1

I have a lot of music on my computer, and I share it to a SoundBridge device. This works well WHEN it works. I have two problems.
1 The Media player loses the library and has to rebuild it frequently.
2 After a few days or so, it prohibits me from sharing media. When I click on Media Sharing, it displays an error message about sharing being turned off. When I go to web help, it tells me to start the Media Sharing Service, but when I look, it has been started. It also tells me to check ownership of the media database, but that is OK as well. I can get it to start over by uninstalling the media player and then re-installing it, but this gets to be a drag very quickly.
Can anyone help? Thanks very much.

Is there anyway in Windows Media Player 11 to play media without displaying skin, meaning only the media is displayed. Full screen display basically does that with controls being hidden and then activated by cursor movement. ATI does that with it media player by allowing you to hide/display border/controls.

Thanks for any help!

I have a couple of problems that I've been beating my head against the past week or so and while at least on the Media Center problem it seems I've gained a tiny bit of headway I haven't found anything on the embedded video problem I'm very proficient with computers and fixing issues I do so for a living and have for years so I'm no dummy but these issues are being incredibly difficult and I'm sure with it being a new OS isn't helping matters much either Lets start with my setup Core Duo e GB RAM eVGA GTS MB Vista Ultimate bit All the latest and greatest patches and drivers Problem - Media Center - Used to be when I fired up Media Center and went to Library Setup it would crash the Media Center program saying quot Media Center has quit working and will close now quot or something similar and that was it I was also having an issue with Windows Media Player & Media Center Player Embedded Broke Media also crashing but right upon firing it up and Media Center & Embedded Media Player Broke also H video files in Media Player Classic running too fast However after messing around with different ways and versions of K-Lite Codec Pack and FFDShow I finally got it to where all my videos now work great in Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player now doesn't crash Media Center & Embedded Media Player Broke and Media Center no longer dies with an Media Center & Embedded Media Player Broke error but now instead when I go to Add Library or try to play a sample video it comes up with some error about my video software not being installed correctly and to try reinstalling Media Center if possible Well I know that reinstalling Media Center in Vista isn't an option as far as I know so any ideas on what I can try I've been doing alot of Google searching and haven't found much except some posts where peeps said that they had similar issues after installing Satellite TV for PC which of course I had to do the same and that it totally messes stuff up I have to think that could possibly be why all this got messed up to begin with but since I have uninstalled that software and no remnants remain as far as I'm aware Problem - Embedded media in IE - For some reason I used to be able to play any embedded videos in IE but now I can hardly see any instead I get one of those lovely blank placeholder boxes with a red X If I try running a CNN com video it actually tells me I don't have Windows Media Player installed but since Windows Media Player is clearly installed and now working this doesn't make sense to me I also have the same issue if I run Firefox or Netscape as well even if the appropriate plugins are installed Any ideas on this I can't find really anything on this via Google searching and this one is actually the one I want fixed the most Sorry for it being so long and thanks in advance
