I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try burning the DVD's in an .iso format. You have probably selected the wrong format in InfraRecorder . Go over the options carefully. I burn all my DVD's in the .iso format. They play fine on all my DVD players and my computer

For the last few days every time I try to burn a dvd the writing software is going through the entire burn process and telling me it has succeeded and yet at the end the disk is still completely blank. It does not matter what I am burning or what i am burning it with I always get the same result. Nero, Windows Vista itself and Convert X To dvd are all doing it. I seem to be able to burn cds still, but dvd burning has stopped. The drive will still read disks that i burned previously. I did hear that other programs can interfere with these things but no information on which ones.

Recently when I have tried to play them back, they are not recognized and so will not play. A:DVD drive won't read NEW DVDs it has burned

Hi there

DVD's should be FINALIZED before they will read in different DVD drives / standard DVD players etc. You might still have a session open on Multi-session.

Check also HOW you are burning DVD's - there's quite a few different things -- for example data (as a DVD-ROM), as an .ISO as a VIDEO DVD as a DVD rip etc etc. DVD authoring also requires a different setup such as "cloning" or copying DVD's. Also are the DVD's Double layer or what. All sorts of possible things here.

Subject is a bit too complex without more info.

Used Nero and new DVD-RW drive to burn lots of data to DVD-RW discs as data discs. New DVDs will read perfectly in other PC. My PC will not recognise / read them. Explorer simply sees no files.
I'm using Windows XP on PC, and all my updates are installed, so far as I can tell. Other DVDs will read perfectly in this drive.

Any ideas? It's really irritating to know that the data is on there but not be able to access it!

Thanks for any ideas!

I have been copying my home-burned DVDs as a test of their readability and I have discovered that factory DVDs are read at four- to ten times the speed of home-burned.

Example: I did a direct diskcopy of the Sony software DVD that came with my burner. I then copied that disk to my hard disk to test its readability and it took easily over 30 minutes.

I then copied the original factory DVD (containing exact duplicate data) and the same process took about 8 minutes.

This copy process varies from disk to disk; but, the time comparisons are always exceedingly in favor of the factory DVD by a factor of four or more.

Is this normal?

Where can I find more data on this?

I have been trying to solve this problem over a month. I've been copying over 5 years without problem but now I am having this problem, that dvds are showing pixels on my standalone dvd player. To make sure that the standalone works fine, I tried copies with another computer and they play fine on it.

I always used Maxell media without problem. Now I tried Verbatim and TDK media to make sure if the media is not the problem and they showed pixels as well.

After deleting unwanted and old software from the computer I scanned computer for viruses, I replaced the dvd burner with a new one, I replaced the memory with a new one of 1gB, I replaced the SATA cable and the cable that is connected with the burner and the mother board as well. But I still have the problem!

Any help or idea what can be the problem?

Here is my system information:

A:Burned DVDs Show Pixels

Pixellation usually occurs when the quality setting is too low in your dvd creation software.
Choosing a lower quality increases the amount of compression and this in turn means more detail and sharpness is lost. The resulting video can then appear pixellated.

I have made about 5 DVDs (all of them NTSC format) and they all seem to freeze, usually about 5 minutes in, when I try to watch them.

I have been having trouble burning DVDs that will play on a regular DVD player. They play perfectly for about 15 minutes then start skipping and freezing and finally stop completely. These same DVDs will play perfectly the whole way through on a computer or XBox 360. I have used numerous software programs and 2 different DVD burners because I thought something was wrong with my hardware. Now I don't think the problem ever was the hardware because I replaced my drive with a Sony Optiarc and then bought another Sony Optiarc just in case I had a bad one. I am out of ideas so any help would be appreciated.

I use Acronis True Image 11 for backing up, all from the bootable CD, I don't have Acronis installed. After creating an image I verify it with Acronis. I also like to burn the image to DVDs and verify them on DVD also. When I burn them to DVDs with Vista, Acronis wont recognize them to verify or restore. If I burn them with Nero Acronis will verify them and can restore them.

Any images burned to DVDs would already have been verified while on the HD before burning to DVDs.

Any body know what the difference is between burning them with Nero verses Vista in relation to Acronis not recognizing the images burned to DVDs by Vista?

Since I've never used the built-in disk burning capabilities of either XP or Vista, I cannot be sure, but it would seem though that the disk being burned with Vista is not following standard protocols, which is why Acronis is having a hard time reading those disks.

If you really must use Vista to burn the disks, then do slowly, and mark the options to ensure compatibility across a wide range of platforms. Or, just continue using Nero to burm the CDs.

One question though - When creating backups, doesn't Acronis have an option to burn directly to DVD?

I am looking through old CD's/DVD's to see what is on them and when I pop them in all I see is this: DESKTOP.INI

but as you can see here there is files on the disc:

When I pop the CD's into my laptop they show up. What is going on here? It is doing it on certain DVD's so far it seems to be doing it on Memorex DVD+R discs.

I am just guessing because it was only 3-5 discs that have done this so far. Is there a setting or something I am missing?

I just put a CD-R in and it also refuses to show the files. My friend told me it's because my Drive is -R and the disc is +R. However the CD-R not showing up kind of shoots that theory.

Hi I believe it would be a format / codec issue. You would need to read the types of disc the TVR can play and then create a disk to match.  This may involve downloading additional software etc. So if you could give some more details then perhaps someone here could offer more help.

Make sure you are not creating a multi-session disk and ensure that you finalize the disc. Also dvd players have an easier time reading DVD+R than DVD-R.

Minor issue here. I have a lite on dvd recorder that came with a nero 6. Recently I upgraded to nero 7 ultra and now I notice that when I playback a burned dvd in my dvd player that it cannot fast forward over 2x the speed. It simply freezes up then return to the original menu. Before I could fast forward a scene up to 8x the speed(the maximum of my dvd player).
I tried changing the settings just before I burn my dvd. First making sure that it was a the maximum setting. Then i tried to change the write speed setting to 8x. No change. Like I said this is minor but I was wondering if this is a glitch with nero 7 ultra or did upgrading somehow change a setting or what? Thnks!

Except for this everything else seems to work fine. I tried changing the speed in the nero vision 4 just before burning. First I made sure that the write settings were on max. I have a Mashita 842s DVD-RAM superdrive in my Toshiba M400 notebook. I am running XP w/SP3. I don't recall whether or not in the past I've tried to play movie dvds on it using such as WinDVD and Windows Media Player 11. However, recently I've had the need to do so. Unfortunately, although data DVDs (both those I've burned myself and software discs) and audio cds can be read without a problem, movie dvds are not recognized as even being in the drive. The lack of recognition includes Windows Explorer, WinDVD and Windows Media Player. Because the other type of discs work fine, I'm assuming this a software or configuration problem. I've used both Windows and a third party utility and both say the driver(s) are the most recent. I would appreciate any and all assistance in diagnosing and correcting this problem. Thanks.

A:Retrieving Burned Data?

First, make a shortcut to the folder.
Select this shortcut and cut it (Ctrl+C).

In XP and 2000:
Go to "C:\Documents and Settings\Your_username\SendTo" and paste it (Ctrl+V).

The "SendTo" folder is hidden, so you may need to unhide the files

Ok, I have had this Philips CDRW for a couple years now and it's worked great. Recently we had some work done on our system and had to disable the regualar CD drive (the standard one) as it died. This made teh CDRW the master (?). I'm not sure if this is what caused the problem, but recently everytime I try to burn a CD there is not sound on the CD. In my stereo and on the computer, the # of songs come up and with their individual times, and the songs will even "play" but there is no sound at all. I've tried the Roxio Easy CD creator and also I tried another burning program, still no luck. Different CDs were used too.
Any advice would be awesome!!! Thanks so much!

i dont think u can retrieve data from the cd. it seems the table of contents on the cd is damaged, maybe due to scratches or dye deterioration. thats why explorer is seeing it as audio tracks and not solid data. ur only hope is Isobuster, but even in that, u cant retrieve the whole data if the cd sectors r damaged.

Hello everyone,
I have a problem.
2 years ago, I burned 2 CD's.
Today I put them in my laptops' DVD drive.
When I opend the disks, an empty window opened, showing no data whatsoever.
I know the CD's are still good, and I know my DVD drive is good.
Any idea on what is happening?
The CD's were burned on a MAC. I have opened these CD's on other Wintel machines before.
I am currently using an inspiron 9100 laptiom, with a DVD+ drive.
Thanks for all your help,

I get the following message just as it's almost finished copying to my computer:

Cannot copy [filename here]: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Now, I really hope I can somehow get this resolved, because the file is only 700MB of 4.7GB on 8 discs, and I really don't want to have to re-download the program...

A:Error when copying from burned data disc

Yikes ... try cleaning the disk :-X This problem is usually caused by a scratched or damaged disk. Use a little bit of water and hand soap ... believe it or not, the safest thing for a CD. Better than that, if you have some lens tissue or the cloth you use for cleaning glasses, try that out.

Worst case scenario, you can buy a "Disk Doctor" if that doesn't work and the CD is really important to you.

Have you tried this CD on another drive? Sometimes that can magically do it.

I am trying to format a CD-R disc (erase all data on this disc) but when it starts the system comes back with disc is "write protected"? Help.

A:Unable to erase all data on burned CD-R disc

Yes, you are correct. If the data is sensitive then snap the disk into small pieces or score the 'label' side to make it unreadable.CD-R (& CD+R) disks are designed to be written to once and, as such, are a good way of keeping a (relatively) permanent copy of data but they are no good for use as a 'use many times' medium, for that you need the ones with 'rw' at the end (for 're-writable'). The same goes for DVD and Bluray disks."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Pink Floyd

I have this DVD drive that reads video DVDs and pretty much any other application of DVDs but it can't read data DVDs or install software from them.

A:DVD drive doesn't read data DVDs

How old is the DVD drive.
The most common failure item in a computer built in the past 10 years is the optical drive. The laser burns out, or the laser gets out of alignment, or the belt slips, or the drive wheel slips.
They generally last about a year, but if you use them a lot, they will fail after six months.
Luckily, they are very inexpensive nowadays. You can replace one from Wal-Mart, or Best Buy, or Target, or Circuit City, or the remaining CompUSA for about $$24 to $29 to $34 to $39. Four screws, and some cable exchanges, and you are done... if you can figger out how to get into the case.

What exactly is a "recovery DVD drive"?

I know what DVDs are. I know what DVD drives are.

You say "burn the data from the DVD drive". More confusion. A DVD drive doesn't hold data. DVDs do.

What do you think you want to do?

A:cd dvd combo drive plays dvds but will not read audio or data cds

Well, here's what you can do to narrow it down to a software issue. You said the drive obviously was working when you reloaded your OS from the factory restore disks, which I have no dispute on. So how about rebooting with one of those disks in there again (the first one thats bootable), if it boots off of that again great, but be sure to cancel everything so it doesn't wipe your existing system.

Provided it boots from that your drive is still good, and it is something in Windows, something I can't think of right now though

A chkdsk /f will fix some errors if possible. You will need to run it from a elevated command prompt.

My Inspiron 5150( Windows XP) laptop Hard drive stop functioning and what I would like to do is transfer the data to my HP desktop(Windows 7). I read somewhere that if I buy an 2.5" USB Hard Drive Enclosure and a software to get the data back, that would do the trick. Please advice me as to the best way to go about this. I am not an expert on computers but can follow instructions.

Thank You

A:Corrupt HD need to save data

an 2.5" USB Hard Drive Enclosure and a software to get the data back, Click to expand...

you dont need software - should just be able to attach the Now USB drive to a PC and access like an external drive - you may have some access denied issues

you could try
It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get data off.

If you have another PC with a cdwriter and spare CD
goto and download the ISO

YOu can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick

full details are here

click on the image "download ubuntu"
Select a location
then begin download
Save the file onto your PC – remember where you saved it – so you can find it again to create the image bootable CD.

You do NOT copy the ISO file onto a CD - you have to use the ISO to create a bootable CD
The CD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO
If not - use this free program

When the UBUNTU CD boots - you will see the following options
1) Try ubunto without any change to your computer
2) Install ubuntu
3) Check CD for defects
4) Test memory
5) Boot from first hard disk.

Use OPTION 1 "Try ubunto without any change to your computer" ONLY this option this will run from the CD and not install onto your harddrive - be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., so repeat only use option 1

Now you should see a UBUNTU desktop
This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working

You may see your Harddrive on the desktop - if not have in look in the places on the tool bar at the top of the screen.

If you can see your harddrive – see if you can find the your datafiles –
XP look in “documents and settings” under the user name you had on the PC
Vista/Windows 7 look in “user” under the user name you had on the PC

Now if you have a USB flash drive or external harddrive – you should be able to copy your data from the harddrive onto the USB device

I have kapersky 2010 and windows vista and my data base says that the black list is corrupted and to update. When I update it will only do it for 3 seconds then stop and will still say it is corrupted. I also tried to rollback the data base with the same problem.
I did a rollback with windows when it has issues restarting but there was no update from Kapersky in between the last time I had it on and the windows rollback.
So I am unable to update and was thinking that I may need to reinstall but it could still be upto date it is just the windows rollback messed with it and it may right itself with the next Kapersky update.
Any help would be appreciated.

A:All downloaded data is corrupt - possible causes?

The easy way to isolate this would be to try a different computer on the broadband account. Have you tried a wired connection to the router to see if that solves it? How about connecting with a wired connection directly to the modem and eliminate the router and wireless communications from the possibilities.

Divide and conquer here.

A:EasyRecovery Pro and Corrupt Data

lot depends on exactly how Partition Magic screwed up. If your files are defintely corrupt, then it may not be possible to fix them, as I don't know of any tools that can do this.

I lost a partition several times before, using partition magic, and I never had any success with EasyRecovery. I more recently lost a partition, not due to partition magic this time, and successfully rescued all my data using GetDataBack for NTFS. Its the only software that has ever worked for me, but as I only used it once, I cannot say whether you would also find success using it.

I managed to rescue every single file without error using that software, but it isn't cheap. By the sounds of your issue, your data would appear to be damaged, though the cause may be more down to those files being fragmented when your partition went missing. If that is the case then GetDataBack can recover fragmented files in most cases.

EasyRecovery is not so good at recovering fragmented files, so that may be the cause of your problem. I'm only guessing though.

Also, while you appear to have managed to fix any corruption of your office files, you may actually have some corrupt data in those files. EasyRecovery has simply fixed any critical issue and allowed you access to those files. They will not be identical to their state before corruption occured.

Hi guys,

I just bought ARMA 3 and believe it or not, the brand new DVD I received has a corrupt file on it. I brought it from ebay so I would like to try and repair it before sending it back.

I am 100% sure it is the disc as my DVD drive is working fine, every other DVD I put in works flawlessly. Installing the game fails at around 50% and burning the DVD to an ISO also fails at 50%. Other games install/burn fine.

I tried copying the files to my hard drive and found that the damaged file is '107411_depotcache_5.csd' which is about 1GB in size (every other file copies without issues).

My question is, can I somehow repair the corrupt file?

Not likely unless its just a smudge or finger print on the DVD that can be wiped clean.

Hi Firstly sorry for long thread but i thought it best to give as much info as possible I recently purchased a Barracuda ST DM HDD for use as storage within an external Thermaltake G USB enclosure I connected it directly to one of my PC's and installed Win bit onto a TB partition with on HDD external NEW data Corrupt/lost the remaining space partitioned up to Corrupt/lost data on NEW external HDD the TB limit therefore making the partition approximately GB I was not aware of the limits at the time to be used as a data with no operating system installed The remaining data above the TB limit did show up within the Disk Manager I transferred all of my data onto the drive and decided then to do a fresh install of Win on all of the other drives Once I had done this I connected up the external HDD only to find that the data could not be accessed Win was saying that the HDD needs formatting I then tried it on a different PC with the same results I also tried it within a Startech USB enclosure and directly connected to SATA on two different systems all with the same results in addition to trying it on a Win XP system One thing to note that the TB HDD DID boot several times prior to the HHD s being reformatted and reinstalled with Win I only checked the data was there I did not check that anything was corrupt at this point The fact that it started and everything was present without any obvious errors was enough at the time hindsight s a wonderful thing Finally I have used Get Data Back GDB software to try and recover the contents which I was able to partially do but there seems to be extensive corruption with many files unreadable I am currently running GDB under XP it takes hours having already run it under Win just to try and see if there are any different results obtained I have also tried Recuva and Panda Recovery which neither work as they both claim that the drive needs formatting An extremely curious issue is that within the photos that are recovered via GDB many of them are not the original photos but the same photo four times but not always i e the correct photo on the first file and then three copies of the same photo BUT with the original correct file name Also the preview image of the file when going into is quite often incorrect corrected by deleting the Thumbs db and then refreshing though The same effect has happened with my MP files the song playing matches the track name but then the same song for track and again with the track name being the correct one Then it starts again with song matching the track name but then track and still showing the correct track name but upon opening playing song Excel files upon opening are generally but not always not the files that they should be but a different file maybe that was next in the list or nearby with many being corrupted The files contain accounts data for a friends company so are rather important as are the personal photos I do have some backups made with Genie Backup and these were moved temporarily onto the TB drive hindsight again for the short time that I formatted the other drives It will take a long time to sort through the current files and the backups the ones that haven t become corrupted to find what is and isn t useable and I know that some of the data is older than the current data that has been lost Please can anyone advise what can be done to safely recover the data Thanks Neil

Quick intro: Using windows XP, I was copying large amounts of data from 1 WD sata drive to a Seagate (connected through e-sata), left the PC, when I returned, the PC had restarted and was executing chkdsk for one of the drives (I think it was the Seagate).
Seagate drive is perfectly healthy (hardware-wise), the WD not sure yet (it probably was the cause of the problem).

Question: Can this whole scenario by any chance have corrupted my data on the Seagate drive? I do not care about the directories that I was copying (I have deleted all the half-copied stuff), I care about what was in there in the beginning.

Can someone who understands how the file system and chkdsk work reply with certainty to my question? I need some re-assurance because I didn't keep checksums.

Take care

A:Application Data Folder Corrupt

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD or an integrated SP3 CD if SP3 is installed).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2,(or SP3) you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go start > Run the box type in sfc /scannow …please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).
