Start Menu Window appears on startup

Q: Start Menu Window appears on startup

Hi ~

I have a friend who, when she boots up each time, the Start Menu window appears on her desktop. How would she fix this problem? It is the actual window that has the Start Menu in it.

Thanks ~ Jody

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello All,
I was wondering how to add the applications appearing on Windows 10 Start Menu to Windows Start Screen, that too in a specific location on the start screen, with a specific tile size and under a specific application group? Do you think it's feasible? I know it's easily done interactively by right clicking the start menu app and pinning it to Start but this has to done for the enterprise users so would like to see if the task could be accomplished using a GPO or Script.
Kind Regards,
sK

Switched to the XP-ish Classic Start Menu, plus Adjust for Best Performance, in the usual prescribed way, no third-party interface-modifiers. All looks & works fine except that the Start button itself looks like TWO buttons -- one atop the other and just slightly out of alignment (screenshot here).

Nothing?s malfunctioning, but it sure looks silly. I haven?t done anything unusual, apart from docking the taskbar on the right side of the screen. What could be causing this, and how can I un-cause it? Would Classic Shell fix this?

Grateful for any clues.

Hi all, I use Startisback+ in Windows 8.1 Pro WMC x64, never had any issues (months using it). Today, for no apparent reason, the Windows Start Menu (where I pin frequently used programs) appears blank as shown below. I tried running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth followed by sfc /scannow in command prompt without success. Any suggestions to repair this? Thanks

A:Start Menu appears blank

Not familiar with using this program.
If you tried settings within this program and it did not help, possible program has corrupt or missing files, should have nothing to do with Windows 8 as far as SFC, which fixes system files not other software files. Any system restore points ? If not try reinstall this software.

Hi, my name's Pedro and I'm using Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14332.
I have a laptop Lenovo Yoga 11s, Intel I5 3339Y, 8GB, Intel HD Graphics 4000 (last driver) and 128GB SSD card.

In the last build (14328), after a good install and a normal work short period, the All Apps in Start Menu has disappeared. It doesn't appears in Start Menu anymore since then.
I've installed the new build (14332) hoping that this could be solved, but that doesn't happens. I've changed the video driver but that did not work either.

So I'm asking here if anybody has some information about this that could help me to solve it.

Thanx in advance

I do not understand your question.

I posted before regarding this problem with a different title to the thread.

I was running with Vista 32 bit on my PC and bought a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade and installed. But annoyingly the explorer window appears at each start up. I have tried re-installing several times but with no change.

Now in retrospect, all I have to do is click 'X' and it goes. But it is annoying and if anyone can help stop it appearing it would be appreciated.

Bear in mind I am pretty much a novice in computer terms and any fixes can you keep it basic.

regards and thanks

Johnston.

A:Help. Explorer window appears at start up.

Hey John.

Press start, and type msconfig. This will bring up the startup menu where you can enable or disable startup services. If you look through the tabs, is there any place where it starts an explorer window? If you check "Safe Startup" on the main screen and reboot, does it still happen?

Upon getting the System Tool 2011 virus this morning, I was able to delete the unwanted files using the combination of Rkill and Malwarebytes after three attempts.
I just rebooted and my computer is working wonderfully. However, I just clicked on my start menu and I notice that System Tool is still there (and it is highlighted in orange which I think means that it was a recently added program). I think this should be removed, right? I feel that leaving it there might leave a chance for the problem to reoccur. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Greetings!

I shot a quick video of the issue:

When we switch themes, the orb reappears but functionality does not return to normal, then the orb will disappear again and be replaced with "Start" written in text. No odd group policies are enabled (not that I am aware of), the default theme is aero, the machine is completely up to date. Rebooting temporarily fixes the issue, but returns shortly thereafter to no rhyme or reason. I am grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks!

Had, and still have installed in machine, an SSD with Windows 7 as OS
Had, and still have, a Western Digital 2 TB external HD attached. It was used as back up for the original set up. This also has the Smart Ware software installed but which I have not used.

Tried a dual boot on a new SSD using Windows 8.1 recently but turned out ot be a pain so I simply installed 8.1 on new disk.

The problem-

When I boot and Windows 8.1 starts, window showing the external hard drive and contents appears. Annoying. How can I stop this?

I am planning to reformat this external storage and redo the back up using the new 8.1 OS and current content of the my other HDD containing our data, will this likely stop the "pop-up" on start?
Thank you for any assistance or ideas.

The question is what is wrong with the boot manager, i want to be able to see and load any partion drive. I want to keep my data on the drive with xp.

I will really appreciate any useful information on how to have window xp and window on my system without any issue with booting

Hello and welcome to the forums! My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed. If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.____________________________________________________Rootkit UnHooker (RkU)Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.Link 1 (.exe file)Link 2 (zipped file)Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. Good evening:I?ve been having trouble with the Start menu in Window 10. I use the Full Screen menu but sometimes when I turn off the computer and turn it on, the menu reset to the classic default and I lose all of my custom shortcuts. Yesterday I clean install because I was also having trouble with the latest update from Microsoft and my computer was constantly resetting trying to install unsuccessfully the KB.If anyone can shed a bit of light, I will truly appreciate.

Can someone share with me how to customize the START MENU TREE in Windows 7 ?

I'm not talking about simplistic stuff like turning on and off "Recent Documents" / "Pictures" / "Networks" etc. I'm referring to to the listing of programs installed.

In Windows XP you could do this using C:\Documents and Settings\User\Start Menu\Programs.

But in Windows 7 this is either hidden,or, located in some obscure location.

Thanks.

Re: Windows 2000 Pro

Hi,

I used to be able to go to Start, My Favorites; click on something; and it would open into a new window. Then, a moron from eBay told me to change a bunch of things, and I can't remember what the idiot made me change (because I thought the brainless idiot knew what he was doing).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Does anyone have "small" Favorites Menu opening Start window? any suggestions to the following problem I m running Windows with IE If I go to quot Start - Start Menu Favorites opening "small" window? Favorites quot and select any of my favorites including my homepage IE opens the browser as a quot small quot window not fit to screen If I navigate to my quot User - Favorites quot folder and click from there it s the same thing However if I click on my IE icon in my taskbar my homepage opens quot full quot every time I would like my favorites to also open to fit the screen I have tried the obvious maximizing it then closing it normally dragging the edges of the small window to fit the screen and then closing with quot x quot and also with quot ctrl-file-exit quot and quot shift-file-exit quot - the only suggestions I ve been able to find so far but nothing is working In my start menu - programs I have right clicked on both the and bit IE Explorer icons and selected for them to open maximized but it hasn t helped I recently had a run in with the quot SmartHDD quot virus but this problem existed long before that issue I have done a reset on the browser after the smarthdd issue I reinstalled the browser but I d assume there may be something other than the browser causing this problem Scans with AVG Spybot Malwarebytes Superantispyware are not showing any problems with the pc Any suggestions aside from installing programs that will open windows maximized any warnings against using programs such as IEmaximizer Thanks

A:Start Menu Favorites opening "small" window?

Close all but one (1) IE window. "Grab" the corners of the remaining window with your cursor and "stretch" it to the desired size but do NOT maximize it! Now close the resized window. The resized window MUST be the last window closed in order for its size to be remembered.Or you can install IE New Window Maximizer and forget about it!http://www.jiisoft.com/iemaximizer/The above is a quote from M/soft Help desk - The MVP people seem to think this program is OK to use -Hope this helps -Regards -

Is there a way to change the start menu so that the left plane (the one with "All Programs", "Recently Open Programs" and the like) so that it's not there anymore? I got rid of all the components inside the space, but now it's just a large white box and is a bit of an eyesore.

Here is an example of what I got and what I would like to have:

Main focus would be doing this on 32-bit Ultimate, but having it work for 64-bit Home Premium as well would be nice.

I was playing games and all of a sudden when I wanted to check email, I noticed that the bottom task bar and the start menu were not there. So, I forced to close the laptop. And when I restarted it, the task bar and start menu are still not there.
I used the mouse in the bottom and side and tried to drag incase it was there, but in vain.
Help here please.
Thanks a lot.

A:Bottom task bar and start menu are disappeared in window 7

Restart and press F8 continuously. At the Advanced Boot menu (Safe Mode etc) Choose Repair Your Computer. If that fails it will take you to the RE (Recovery Envirnonment) first choose System Restore to a time before this happened if that fails choose Command Prompt and type chkdsk /C: /R and press enter.
You can also try this method, do everything except the Registry Cleaner.: Windows 7 Taskbar Missing, Ways To Rectify This Issue

My workstation -- Windows XP Pro SP3 -- got hit with a nasty trojan type virus last week which deleted all of my program menu items from the start menu, all my taskbar shortcuts, all my favorites from IE. I have managed to restore/recover just about all the menu items/shortcuts/Favorites. The only thing I have left to fix is on the start menu when I am in windows XP view -- I cannot see the run window or settings, Documents, .... menu items. If I go to Classic view, then these items show up. How can I fix the start menu in Windows XP view to show the run window and the Settings, Documents, ... menu items?

Thanks

I'm writing this for a friend.

"About 1:00 this morning, my Gateway Laptop starting acting strangely. I was surfing the web when suddenly my computer began running incredibly slowly. I decided to restart, but when my profile opened, my entire desktop was clear, start menu included, save for my wallpaper.

"The start menu and icons appear at first, but then clear away after a while. In that time, I can open up outside applications, but not My Explorer or anything windows related. I brought it into Best Buy this morning and they told me that it was a virus that hit explorer.exe and that I had to back up everything and nuke the hard drive with a reformat.

"Needless to say, I wanted a second opinion. What do you guys think? I'm running XP, btw."

Hi,
I am trying to help a friend with their laptop. When he turns the laptop on there are no icons or start button just the background. I booted in to safe mode and did a system restore and it worked until I got on the internet then started to get multiple popups about viruses and such. I rebooted and lost the icons again. I did the restore again to try and get HJT this run. The scan seemed to work fine but I could not get the log to save so I had to do multiple screenshots. I think he had an old version of HJT but was unable to get on the net from his laptop to get the most recent version. Hopefully the screenshots will be sufficient. I have attached them in a zip file. thanks in advance full all of your help

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputerPlease download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop. * Close all other windows before proceeding. * Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts. * When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. What DSS will do: * create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista. * clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives. * check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.=========================================Logs RequiredC:\Deckard\System Scanner\main.txtC:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

2 nights ago i went to bed with pc running fine etc. i woke to it shutdown(not my doing) upon restart, all i have is a purple screen. i rebooted in safe mode and tried to run avast. it found a virus in my memory and recommended i reboot and scan b4 anything was loaded. it found several items and i followed prompts to handle them. at end, i rebooted and now i still have no desktop, background etc, it will now open my documents from which i can access everything. quite inconvenient. can someone help me figure out what else i might need to do? I've searched my issue and found others with similar and checked the registry for a changed location but found no issues there.

ps. i've also run malware bytes and spybot and nothing was found

thanks in advance,

I'm on XP x64. Whenever I start up my computer nowadays, the start menu doesn't even show up. I've been waiting for a long time for it to. The reason I'm able to post on these forums is because I went through Task Manager, and File -> New Task (Run...) and typed firefox to access this site. It's just the idiotic startbar. Halp?

EDIT: Oh yeah. Whenever I log in (i'm using the Welcome screen), and it says "applying your personal settings..." or whatever, I have to hit ctrl alt delete to ge ttask manager. The only time windows will load is if the start menu DOES show up which is rare.

Every Day when I leave my computer on and I check the start menu, for some reason the Backup and Restore Center is always there, even though I've never used it and constantly remove it from my front window, any ideas why?

A:Backup and Restore Center keeps appearing in front window of the Start Menu?

By front window, what do you mean? The most recently used programs list? A screenshot or 2 might help.

Hi: I upgraded from Win 7HP and everything went well.  After a few weeks(and I assume an update) I cannot use the start menu or the search bar/ Cortana. I have to right click it to be able shut down or access control panel. No apps are accessible
either.  I don't get the start menu/smart screen tab when I go to settings either.

I have a new XP installation - XP SP2 Pro, actually an upgrade from 2K Pro it comes up each time perfectly up to the login screen. After login in there is no taskbar, icons etc, just the plain background. Alt + Ctrl + Del shows no Applications running but several Processes are.

What could be the cause of this and how can it be corrected?

Hello I'm trying to run programs upon boot in W but it doesn't work I have put them in Start folder and if I go to Task manager I can see the programs are there as well in Startup tab and enabled but they will not start I have to manually launch them anyway I found out a thread where someone was able to get a fix in the same situation by going to taskbar and menu menu startup couple A broken and of programs q's automatically - start properties and selecting 'use the Start menu instead of start screen' but alas my menu has no such tab Any ideas how A couple of q's - startup programs automatically and broken start menu to try to get them programs to launch upon boot would be appreciated The machine was just freshly clean installed with W and it has but a couple of programs on it - exactly the programs I'd like to auto-start Done all windows updates as well Another machine of mine developed a weird glitch in that the start menu doesn't suddenly work at all It just raises a red box in the middle of screen saying something like 'oops your start menu doesn't seem to work but don't worry we'll fix it up for the next boot' and then it promptly reboots but whatever I try it doesn't get fixed I have updated the machine several times without issues and it works fine just can't use the start at all or it reboots been using it for a month now as it is now got the big updates and all but it doesn't get fixed Start menu would sometimes be rather convenient in a machine no Well any ideas about how to try to fix that as well would be welcome The latter machine I might just re-install clean anew I have windows boxes all now W and it appears every one needs to be freshly clean installed to W before they really start working well

A while ago I had some problems with virus/malware on my computer (redirect virus and fake anti virus program). I think I removed them but have still have been having some issues. For starters my start menu and all programs were suddenly empty, I managed to get the program files back but most of the sub files remain empty. I attempted to run unhide.exe some time ago with no luck. Also, on start up my notepad pops up with '[.ShellClassInfo] [email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787dRe' which I've also attempted to fix but have been unable to.

I'm running windows vista home premium 32bit and currently am using free versions of AVG and Kaspersky, neither of which are detecting any issues at the moment.

Any help would be great, thank you

Windows 7 won't start. This began to happen last night and didn't notice anything wrong the day before when using it. Startup repair fails and also system restore. I have tried system restore from varous points. I went ahead and tried sfc/scannow in the command prompt and it tells me repair is still in process and needs to restart.

After read through that thread I recall that I got the same pop up over a week ago stating "Windows cannot read removable disk"

I posted in a thread earlier today in the Windows 7 forums and another user agreed it may be malware.

Can't seem to edit the thread for some reason so here's what happened:

Delayed some non-security programs at start up with Task Manager still loading and the task bar and start menu still freeze. Then tried after deleting Task Manager from the start up folder and it still freezes. So I don't really know what the deal is. Any ideas? Computer only loads completely in Safe Mode.

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.

I have a situation where a program shows on "All Programs" but not in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs in Explorer. How can I see that shortcut or whatever in Explorer?

Also, on C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs there appear items (files, shortcuts, whatever) of the same name. What's going on here?

Thanks,

royeo

Subject says it. Just setting up new pc for my wife. Came with XP Home preinstalled but the start menu was the classic. Switched it to the XP start menu (which I've grown to like better) and My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer icons were removed from the desktop. Only recycle bin remained. Switching back to classic puts them back again. Oddly enough, when I was saving a dowload to the desktop (while set up as XP) the My Computer, My Network Places showed in the save to box when pointing at the desktop.

When I click on the START menu, why is there no path for me to be able to look at say, C:/my documents/my pictures etc...There is nothing there like it is in other Windows programs I have used.

Also when I right click on a program and try to "pin to start menu", there is no option for that, only the shortcut option.

What's up with these things?

Anyone feel like helping a XP Pro Novice out here?

Thanks in advance forn your help!

A lot of Not starting startup options normally, but menu start normal from starting using adware was downloaded to my wife's laptop and I was trying to remove it The problems included Strongvault some adware coupons in several flavors and a registry cleaner After ahving successfully uninstalled several programs and cleaned up the adware there were still remnants of Strongvault Whenever the Laptop started it would attempt to install something and the event viewer pointed to Strongvault I first ran Malwarebytes' AntiMalware software wich found some things I had not seen earlier but the install rpoblem persisted I then ran Hitman Pro and after that the problems started If I start Windows normally it stops and asks me to run Startup Repair or Start windows normally Startup Repair truies to restore to the last good image but the system restore fails I tried to start up in safe mode which works When going into the startup options I can also start windows normally and it starts up but not with the usual settings such as the see-through task bar etc but things appear to work When the normal start fails there are nothing in the event viewer to clue me into what the problem would be Does anybody have any suggestion as to what I can try to get some traces to see where things go wrong

A:Not starting normally, but starting from startup options menu using normal start

Have you looked at msconfig?

Click start and type in msconfig and press enter.  Under the Services tab click the "hide all microsoft services" check box at the bottom and you can safely turn everything off, and then under the Startup tab you can turn everything there off.  This will at least boot cleanly and you can see how things go.

Understand some of these services and startup programs may be something you use all the time, so if there's something missing that you need starting up with the system go back through the services and startup sections and look for the one you want.  The biggest problem I usually see with people that are new to using msconfig are printer / scanner / digital camera related (Lexmark is usually indicated with an lx... listing, and hp digital imgaing for auto starting your camera / scanner software)

Just another road to explore if you haven't already.

Easy question, impossible answer to find...

I have a co-worker of mine when he goes into any context menu from the desktop, everything appears on the left instead of the right.

As an example. He right clicks on the desktop, then goes to "Arrange Icons By". The other choices appear on the left instead of the right.

He uses a tablet with a touchpad. No mouse plugged in configured for left or right handed.

Any suggestions?

Hello all,

windows 7 64 bit,

when i highlight any text, and then right click to copy, i get a menu with, bing, google, translate, etc. It appears for one second and then my regular menu appears.

I was suspicious it was from open office so i deleted that but the menu still appears. I would take a screen shot but it disappears to fast.
any ideas??

Chris

A:right click menu appears for a second and disappears.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Are you highlighting this text while inside a browser? If so, which browser are you using when this happens? You might try removing each accelerator, restarting the computer and then putting each desired accelerator back one at a time (testing the context menu between each one).

Well, this only started recently. Apparently, I somehow messed up my computer and now I am loaded with annoying pop-ups. However, that is not what I am posting about. Lately, I have been getting this window saying:

Buffer overrun detected!

Program D:/WINDOWS/explorer.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

This is the first time I have seen such a window in my life, and I don't really know what to do about it. Also, after I click "ok," explorer just restarts. Thanks in advance.

A:Strange window appears.

That problem might very well be related to your popup problem, so first thing is to get rid of that malware.

Follow the HJT - 5 steps against malware link in my sig, go through the whole 5 steps, then if you're still having problems, post your HJT log in the HijackThis section of the forum and not here. Security techs will look it over.

I think the title says it all

What to do if a questionable pop up window appears?

For example, if I'm doing some research on Google and I start clicking on many sites. Some of them will obviously be safe, but I might go on a not-so-great site and get a pop up window telling me to download an antispyware program (like Antivirus 2009 ). I've read somewhere that even if I click on the "X" to close the window, it might be too late. Would "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" be a good idea?

A:What to do if a questionable pop up window appears?

That is the better option. Ctrl Alt Del. the X is probably too late. I would still scan my PC.

This is the main reason your computer is infected. Visiting cracksites/warezsites - and other questionable/illegal sites is always a risk.

Even a single click on the site can drop multiple forms of very serious malware, many of which disable your onboard protection, and System Restore.

If you install the cracked software, you are running executable files from these dubious, unknown sources. You are in effect giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over the operation of your computer.

Additionally, cracked programs are illegal. Before posting for help, uninstall any such applications.

Referring to the Forum Rules which you should have read at the time of Registering at this forum, TSF does not support illegal activity. As such, be advised that any request for assistance in removing malware may go unanswered, or may be discontinued, if the cracked (illegal) software is still present on the machine.

In 2006, a study revealed that 59% of keygens and crack tools downloaded from peer-to-peer networks contained malicious or "unwanted" software.

ALT, TAB window to close ALT, TAB window suddenly appears... any programs nor do a graceful shutdown of the pc I have scanned the event viewer and see the errors that resulted from a hard power down but nothing in the log that would point the problem There appears to be no particular sequence of open programs that cause the problems it happens when I am typing in a document editing an image or simply viewing a web page The problem existed before I upgraded to Win from WinVista Frankly it was one of the major reasons I did the upgrade Given the subject of this posting I don't even know the correct nomenclature of the problem subsequently my online searches have been futile Any info i e what do I call the problem would be greatly appreciated Dan

Since this is a long term problem, I would tend to suspect the keyboard. Check for stuck keys, and if that doesn't cure the problem, try a different keyboard.

Hello,

When Im in network connections and I right click either my lan or wireless connection the context menu appears but there is no writing in it.

Same things happens in safe mode.

Also when Im in the network and sharing centre and click on the wirless connection the window flashes up but then immediately disappears.

Anyone got any ideas to fix it?
Ive included a picture to illustrate if what i said doesnt make sense
This only happens in the network connections window - all other right click context menus are fine

Thanks

Got this fixed today just thought I'd reply and say how.

I ran sfc /scannow which found some errors which could not be fixed.
I went into the log file that it left and found that the corrupted file was netshell.dll.mui

I then used my windows 7 dvd and extracted the file from it and replaced the one in my system32 folder restarted and all was working fine again.

Due to recent changes in AVG and how it interacts with CF, AVG must be uninstalled to run ComboFix. You will get a message from CF stating such.

If AVG will not uninstall, it is first recommended to uninstall it with this AppRemover by Opswat. The AVG uninstaller can be downloaded from here > AppRemover.exe Go to their homepage and you will see they have support for removal of other AV's as well AVG appremover tool.

I had to replace a failed primary drive and so did a clean install of Window 7 Home Premium.

Now, whenever I login in, an "Open with" window immediately appear on the desktop, naming 'Tom' as the file to be opened. Tom is the sole (admin) user.

When Notepad is selected to open the file, the following appears:

------------------------- start of paste -------------

What is causing this? How can it be stopped?

BTW, if I choose not to open, I have to click Cancel twiice to clear the window.

A:An 'Open with' window appears after login

I waited for someone more knowledgeable to answer your questions - but seeing no posts, I'll step in.

My guess as to what caused it:
Something barfed and wrote a log file or a part of a log file to one of the start up folders and there is no file extension on the file. Thus, every time you log in, the computer tries to open this file.

My guess as to how to stop it:

1) unhide this info: File Extensions - Hide or Show

2) unhide this too: Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide

3) look in this folder for the file or shortcut to the file that you keep seeing open:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
If it is there - delete it.

4) look in this folder for the file or shortcut to the file that you keep seeing open:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
If it is there - delete it.

If the file is not in either of those two places, then you might need to look in the registry for a "run entry" that is causing the file to try and open. Since this is unlikely, I'll wait to hear the results of the steps above before posting how to work with the registry.

If you opt to open the file in Notepad and then use the File > Save As feature, you can locate the offending files location - but deleting the file might not solve the whole issue if there is a shortcut pointing to it.
BTW, the only reason that I can think of for your having to press close twice to dismiss the "open with" dialog box is - the file is being opened twice or there are two such files being opened.

For a couple of weeks, a mystery window has been appearing on my screen, and immediately closing again before I can identify it. I haven't been able to discern a pattern to it yet.

I've scanned my computer with MS Security Essentials and MalwareBytes, and it's come up clean - doesn't look like malware. But I'd like to identify the program and deal with whatever it's trying to tell me. Any idea how to go about this?

I'm using an up-to-date copy of Win7 Pro.

Thanks!

A:Identifying window that closes as soon as it appears

Welcome to Seven Forums rschaefe. Does this window flash reliably? That is, can you expect it to flash within a certain time period, or when performing certain steps? It's possible you may be able to capture it using the Problem Steps recorder.

Problem Steps Recorder

The only other thing I can think of is a scheduled scanner task perhaps. Like an end to a Windows Defender scan for instance, which might conceivably flash a window quickly, but would create a log file with a time stamp that would correspond to the time period of the flash I believe. Another possibility would be event viewer event at the time the flash occurred.
