Password Protect a Single Program?

Q: Password Protect a Single Program?

Does anyone know of a utility which will enable one to password protect a single program only and not the entire hard drive? I would like to so protect my income tax program but there is no password protection built in.

Preferred Solution: Password Protect a Single Program?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Don't let him login as an administrator. Some security software have a password protection feature with them you can check and see if yours does. What AV are you using anyways?

You don't have to log off. Pressing WinKey+L will lock the machine almost instantaneously, and then you type your password to get back in. That security model is safe and secure against most "threats" likely to be found in the home.

Everyone should have their own account, and when you're done using the computer you log off. That's not very complex either.

Relying on aftermarket security utilities is neither safe nor particularly robust - many of them are mediocre exercises in software development which can cause crashes or data corruption.

Hi,

I'm a newbie here and also new to Windows programming.

I want to keep a program from storing a value in its registry key. The other values of this key are needed to store necessary program options, so I can't bar write access to the key completely. The key is in the Current User hive.

With regedit or the RegSetKeySecurity and SetNamedSecurityInfo functions I seem to be able to assign permissions only to the key as a whole, but not to its individual components.

Is there any way to protect a single value?

I'm using XP professional, but I'll have to install this program on other versions as well, so any help will be appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance!

It's really important that I backup some information on my harddrive, and so burning some cds is the ideal thing to do.

The main reason that I'm backing up is in case my computer would get stolen. I

'm looking for some basic password-protection or something like that. Nothing complicated, I'm not trying to hide secrets from the government, or something such that would require really heavy encryption. Just something to prevent, the average Joe to stick in my cd and see all the files.

Couldn't you use the Administration method to lock them?Other than that, I know that there are alot of FREE programs that will lock your folders for you, and there are some that will simply make them invisible, where no one can see them at all.But I'm guessing that you should be able to do it right now, if you have Administration rights on the computer.

I want to know how I can password protect IE7 so that anytime the IE app is called to load, it will ask for a password. Correct password = internet access, incorrect password = no internet access. There are no Windows users setup except for Admin (and I would rather not do that either), so protecting folders etc. with that is not an option.

I have looked extensively for a 3rd party app or add-on, but cannot find anything. Strange, as I would think this would be something that many people/families would like. Just something simple to block IE only. Freeware would be nice, too.

Thanks in advance!

Any internet usage means some kind of downloading. When you open a webpage, a bunch of images and text is downloaded. There is no way for any program to tell the difference.

You may want to give the untrusted users very low privileges (down to guest level even) and allow them to use only the safer browsers like Opera or Firefox.

Maybe describe the situation a bit more. What kind of people are these and what are they using the computer for?

In IIS open the properties sheet for the folder or file you want to be secured and go to the Directory Security tab. Under the Anon Access and Authentication click the edit button and check the challenge response check box. If there is a user account and password set up they should be able to access the folder when challenged.

When I got my computer some years back,I remember having to type in a password and my name (I think) to open Windows or to just enter the computer. I was thinking that you could do something to get rid of the sign in box and I did. So when i turn it on it starts up Windows.
Is there a password protection at startup I can install to prevent prying eyes from getting into my computer?

A:password protect

There is a BIOS password you can set that will not allow the system to boot up until the password is entered, so it won;t even go into Windows.

You do this by entering the Startup when your system is just starting to boot up. Usually you will see something along the lines of Pres F1 to enter Setup or maybe it'll be Delete, or something else. In the BIOS setup, you will be able to find the Security section that will allow you to enable the password, and set what the password is.

One word of warning though, don;t lose that password!!

Hi I would like to password protect a few folders on Windows 7, how can I do this?

Ideally when someone would click on the folder there would be a prompt asking for a password, similar to what happens when you make a .zip and password protect it.

The only software I found till now which comes closest to my needs is Protected Folder, however you have to open the program each time and unlock the folder you want to use, then re lock it when ready, it's not so straightforward as I was imagining. Also I don't know if access will be blocked from other users on the network, once the folder is shared.

Would love to know if you guys know of some other software that better meets my needs. Thanks.

Hi,
I have a D Link DI-524 router for 3 computers in my house. I can't seem to find any info from the company website on how to password protect my network. Also, what encryption should I use so I can safely do my internet banking?

Thanks!

Jess

A:How do I password protect my network?

If you look at the manual for the DI-524 there is a wireless section where you can add secruity
WPA would be a preferred type of incryption - but not all the older machines support that so you may need to use WEP

This is the default method - if nothing changed
Connect a PC to the router by cable
Open a web browser - I suggest Internet Explorer as some router do not work well with Firefox etc
Type in the IP Address of the Router (http://192.168.0.1)
Type admin in the User Name field
Leave the Password blank
Click OK

Click on the wireless button - the version of the manual I have only has WEP as a choice - but later firmware will have WPA
the manual is on the D-link website

Also, what encryption should I use so I can safely do my internet banking?Click to expand...

I would make sure you have a upto date virus scanner on the PC and also a malware scanner - malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and superantispware http://www.superantispyware.com/

I think you can do that with such softwares, TrueCrypt, MyWinlocker...FolderLocker, DirLock...

But you can aswell set to private all the folder in C:\Users\your Name\

A:Password Protect Folder USB

Hey, unfortunately because of the nature of USB storage (and the way in which they can be read by many OSes [which you wouldn't be able to script for]) The only secure way to password protect a USB stick is by encrypting the files within or using an encrypted file system.

I've heard good things about TrueCrypt and the time it takes to encrypt/decrypt. It depends entirely on how badly you need to make the files inaccessible.

A:Password Protect Partition

Hey,I would like to protect my Backup Partition. How do I go about doing this?If there is any software available, please could it be Vista Compatible.ThankdeanpcmadI recently started using Paragon Drive Backup Personal Edition. I don't think the Vista support is fully debugged yet so I wouldn't use it to resize partitions to make a "backup capsule" on the HD of a Vista machine. But it's fine for making a Vista system image on an external drive. Also since you already have a separate partition you could backup to files on that partition and then make another backup or copy those files to an external drive in case your HD got trashed completely. For $50 it's worth it. The nice thing is it's an imaging program so you can restore with all the programs installed at the time of backup. A System Snapshot. To test it out I created a backup on an older machine, deleted the C: partition, then restored! Everything worked just like before. Way better than reinstalling stuff. Also it comes with a boot CD that has USB drivers. I booted the CD and I could see the backup files on my Seagate USB drive. I've been going without system backup for a long time because I never found any that really did hassle-free restore until now. If you have access to network drives for backup you might want to look at the Pro version. But for me the Personal works fine.Paragon Drive Backup

Well since some viruses completely disable AV programs from running, I doubt a password would help unless it has to go though the password first and then hit the AV product. But overall, it's really your call. Your computer, your choices.

Hi, I have a quick question. My boss just set up a new office, there are 3 computers there on a network, 2 running Vista, 1 running XP. The office next to ours has a T3 connection and my boss purchases his internet connection through them because its cheaper than the cable connection. However, he is worried that they have too much access to our systems. All of our shared files are in the Public Folder, which is something I have grown to hate in Vista. Anyway, I was wondering if there is anyway to password protect the shared files on our systems. Can you do this through Vista or would we have to purchase 3rd party software.

Thanks

I don't know how it is in the UK, but medical records in the US are subject to very strict Federal regulations about privacy, aka HIPAA.
It's not something I would want to freelance with, especially with untested and possibly non-compliant 3rd-party software.
There is little/no slack cut for violations and the penalties are substantial.

I would assume there is something similar in the UK?

Unless you are talking about your own personal medical records on your own personal, home computer (and even then), I would research the rules very thoroughly before proceeding.

<just sayin>

A:How to Password protect a web page

For a truly effective password you would probably need to use CGI to process the request. You can search for CGI scripts on the web. If you just want something simple to stop some of the people you could use javascript, but this is not very secure, but is just a barrier. You can find some at www.codingforums.com, look in the "post a javascript" section for password.

A:Need to password protect external HDD

See if File Secure Free would help. You can password protect external hard drives or USB flash drives by plugging it in, choosing the drive and clicking a "lock" button to enter a password which then locks the drive. To unlock the drive, you'd again select it, enter the password, and then click the "unlock" button.

Is there A way to “lock out” a secondary hard drive and only allow access to it via a password? Something that will still work if the HD is taken out of the computer and transferred to another. Something that basically will only allow someone to access it if they reformat it. I know there are programs to encrypt a HD but for a program that will encrypt 320 GB. Hi All,

I'm currently in need of a tool or piece of software that will password, or even easier, lock a folder.
At the moment, Domain Admins within our network are able to view pretty much all of the C drive. I am a DA myself.

I'd preferably like to be able to gain access just by opening it (thus authenticating with my account). At the least, i will have to manually enter a password each time.

Can anybody recommend a tool or software that is safe? Opensource is always good...

Thanks!

Is there a way to password-protect AVG 8 free ... or otherwise prevent it from being shut down? There is a person in my house who insists on shutting it down, saying that a firewall (which I also had to password-protect) is more than sufficient, and it's driving me crazy. We've had viruses and trojans aplenty over the years, and that's *with* an antivirus program' but I simply can't argue this person into seeing the value of having one. User clicks on Icon, user is asked for a password to acess that app, user supplies password and app launches, or no password/wrong password, no app.

Any Idea how this would work, I know I can set up a seperate login for this, but that is not really the solution I want.

Ideas/opinions ?

A:How do I password protect one application

What's wrong with a separate account? You could rig it so that only AccountX has access to the app executable, and then create a simple shortcut or batch file which does "RUNAS /user:AccountX MyApp.exe". The app will start only if the correct password is supplied.

I want to Monitor users who subscribe to my RSS Feeds.

How can i use an authentication Process to block users from getting access.

A:How can I password protect RSS and XMl feed

the normal RSS feed is
just a url
to a specially formated file
To 'control' that access, you would need your users to 'login' before accessing it,
and that breaks the RSS subscription data flow; ie any Pop3 email client can 'subscribe' to an RSS feed.

To 'monitor' without control, place a fixed image in the feed, like the FAVICO.ico file reference. Now your server logs will contain an entry for each time it's served.

Instead of the FAVICO.ico, which is served to every browser that accesses ANY content on the server, create your own gif in some other location, eg rss/rssaccessed.gifand each 'hit' was from a RSS subscription.

Try re-installing the trial version, but it may not install if it detects that the trial has expired, in which case you'll have to buy the full version. Personally I would never use any locking software on anything as there's just too much risk of being locked out.
