Wifi Capability being turned off

Q: Wifi Capability being turned off

Forgive me for not knowing the proper terms, but am newer to the Wifi game - have only had it since February.

Our Gateway Laptop has always recognized our Wifi signal until a week ago. Now whenever it goes to sleep or is shut off it does not recognize that we have internet. Instead of the 5 bar icon showing; it has a red x. The only way I can get it to connect is to reboot. I have done a system refresh and also tried to update the driver (Realtek RTL8188CE) but it says I have the most up-to-date version.

This is extremely frustrating! Does anyone have any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Wifi Capability being turned off

"Troubleshoot problems" (right click the network icon) can fix the majority of issues without needing a reboot. It will turn off the adapter and re-initialize the drivers.

On portable devices the wireless adapter can be manually turned off for most devices. It is usually a Fn key that is used to turn wireless off.
Wireless can be disabled and enabled, within the list of network connections (Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections).
I know it is frustrating and I don't have a proper solution for you. Especially when you say you have updated your drivers. But the above may help in keeping you from having to completely restart your machine.

One thought does come to mind though. That is checking to see if the wireless is set to turn off when the PC goes in sleep mode. Keeping wireless active could keep it from bugging out.

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change Plan Settings
Change advanced power settings
Wireless Adapter settings > Power Savings Mode > Setting:
There is a choice between (Performance, Low, Med, and Max)
My desktop never sleeps and wireless is set to performance. So I have no experience with the setting, I just know it is there.

Hello, and Welcome Go here and download the first driver on the page.

In Device Manager Uninstall the current Wireless driver and then run the one I linked to. If I can remember correctly, it will ask if you want only the driver or the driver and complete software. Do the driver + software option. Reboot.

I have a Dell XPS M1530 with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I lost my wireless capability all of a sudden with the previous install of Home Premium. Yes, the wireless switch is turned on. The machine has Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN Network Adapter and Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller. I have it hard-wired to my router with an Ethernet Cable. It's working fine.
Are there any suggestions as to how I can get my wireless capability back?

I am having issues with my wireless on my Asus laptop with Windows About half a month ago I was trying to help a friend with his internet problems and was going through the steps myself I instructed him to disabled then reenable Wireless Off Turned is Capability the wireless adapter in the network and sharing center I did so myself and noticed my wireless did not work after that I ran diagnostics for it and it told me that my wireless switch is turned off which I checked and it is turned on I tried switching it off then on again but it still didn't work I then Wireless Capability is Turned Off did a system restore to get it to work again which it did Then this morning I was having trouble connecting to the internet so thinking it wouldn't do it again I disabled and reenabled the wireless adapter and now its doing the same thing I tried doing a system restore but it comes up with an error about the memory and cancels it I would like to fix the wireless problem without having to do a system restore anyway Please help Thanks GPolice

A:Wireless Capability is Turned Off

Nevermind, I fixed it. What I did was disallowed Windows to disable the adapter for powersaving, and I uninstalled the driver. I restarted it and let it install the driver and it worked.

Ok on my Dell D530 Laptop I got home last night to find my laptop I use for work has no interner connection.

1. Checked my other laptop- It has a connection (not the Router or service its self)
2. Restarted Cable Modem and Router, just in case.
3. Re set the NIC adapter of the D530.
4. Windows Diag was no help.
5. Did everything I could think off.
6. Back-ed everything up, and re-imaged it.

With a fresh factory. It's still saying "wireless capability is turned off". There is no physical switch to "turn on or off"

I looked in "services" and re-started things I thought were help but nothing.

Anyone have any ideas that would help. Next move is calling Dell.

Thanks, Ryan

If I go into Windows Network Diagnostics it says to turn on wireless capability.
It says via a switch at the side or front or a function key combination.
I cannot find were this is.
I think it is a function key.
F2 has a blue signal looking icon on it, but if I press FN + F2 it
does not seem to do anything.

There is often a switch on the side, bottom, or front of the laptop that turns the card on or off.

Also go into Device Manager, find your card, and make sure it is enabled from the right-click menu.

I'm using Lenovo Z570 laptop. (Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter)

Problem:- Can't switch on wifi. The on/off switch is grayed out. While troubleshooting, it says, " wireless capability is turned off".

Solutions Tried:- Re-installed drivers provided by lenovo's website.
Re-installed drivers by windows update.
Reset settings in Bios to default values.
Yes the physical switch is on and the indicator light is glowing.
Fn+ F5 just toggles on/off airplane mode.
Disabled the option so that power management doesn't switches off wifi to save battery.
Other numerous solutions on internet.

The wifi worked flawlessly in windows 7. I even used it as a hotspot (via cmd method).

Someone save me..... Life without wifi seems Dull. :'(

Try doing a full uninstall of the device and driver in Device manager. Then reboot and see if Windows 8 will find the device on its own. If it does, then you should be able to go into the desktop, open device manager and see the device listed as functioning.

The wireless capability is always automatically turned off when I restart/shutdown my notebook. I'd like it to be turned on without pressing Fn+F12 everytime I turn on my notebook because I'm using external keyboard&mouse. The driver is broadcom wireless downloaded from HP, its date is January 31, 2016 This problem won't occur on Windows 10, only Windows 7 has this problem.

Hi @Roween, Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums! This is a great location to get resolutions and interact with experts from the community. I read your very interesting post where the Wi-Fi turns off when you either restart or shut down the unit in windows 7 and not windows 10. It needs to be manually turned on each time. I?ll be glad to assist you with this. After doing some research I found a great response on HP forums that is an accepted solution. This has been authored by a certified HP forum Expert DavidPK . Please visit this link: perform these steps: Open windows Control Panel, open Power Options and next to your currently selected power plan, click Change plan setting. In the following window, click Change advanced power settings. In the next window, open up 'Wireless Adapter Settings' and then open up 'Power Saving Mode'. Next to On battery: click the current setting and a drop-down box will appear - select 'Maximum Performance'. Do the same for Plugged in. Then click Apply and Ok to save these settings. Restart the notebook and see if this has helped the issue. Also open device manager. Go to Network adapters and expand it. Select the wireless network adapter for your device by right-clicking on it and clicking on properties. Then go to power management option and uncheck the box that says? Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Also, check the box that says ?Allow this device to wake the computer? Also please check if the F12 key is the Wi-Fi key on your unit. If you press it once it turns on the Wi-Fi and if you press it again it turns it off. So it toggles on and off. Please check that. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" up button to appreciate my efforts. If this helps, please mark this as ?Accepted Solution?. If you require further assistance let me know and I will gladly do all I can to help. Take care now and do have a pleasant week ahead.

The issue seems to be with my wifi hardware chip. Eventualy I had to take the laptop to Service Center. The guy tried everything that I did again. Finally the problem is resolved, he plugged out the wifi hardware chip, cleand its both ends a little bit using a eraser, and inserted again and voila, it got detected. He said it could be the issue of carbon lodged on chip's connecting ends. Since then I have faced same issue several times, and All I do is open my laptop, plug out WiFi chip from motherboard, clean it a little and plug it again. And It starts working like a charm.May be it is loose or I don't know what is the exact problem. But it still has a problem with Antenna, I recieve very low signal from my wifi, even I am within decent range of wifi router.

Hi Bob and welcome to Eightforums.

Since you have a laptop you are, when it comes to replacing hardware, very restricted to options the laptop manufacteror is allowing. Laptop hardware is often rebranded. That means that 'ordinary' hardware will mostlikely not work.

I'd advise you to ask Asus this question. They made the product, so they know what you can and cannot do with the laptop.

Hi - how do I find out if my PC can connect to wifi rather than with a cable? And if it cannot now, can I download an update to enable wifi? MY PC model is p6-2050ix Thanks

A:does my PC have WiFi capability?

That is a desktop and likely does not have the hardware for wireless. Most people use the wired ethernet port on desktops. You can't just download software to make it work you need the hardware. 2 options: 1. a pci wireless network adapter and antenna which would require opening the case and inserting a card into an open expansion slot; or, 2. a usb wireless dongle. The first option would likely perform a bit better but they make good, cheap wireless usb dongles and all you have to do is pop it in a usb port, maybe (not certainly needed) install a driver and you have wifi. Post back and let us know what you want to do.

The reason why I signed up in this forum is s I can seek help fron those that might know more about computer than me, in order to solve my problem

A few days ago, my laptop was working perfectly fine. But then, I turned my computer off, the next day, everything started up as normal, with Windows 7 Home Premium still in the backgrounds when I am logging in but then, the network connecter won't automatically start. So I was left without internet for a bit. Whats more, I noticed that the taskbar, which was always semi-transparent before, is now white. As well as all the title bars of the programs that I open, turned into blue!

Is computer has always ran Windows 7 as far as I am aware, but e way the taskbar, and the title bars, are behaving, reminds me of windows xp.

I first tried to look up how to solve my wifi problem. I manually opened the network connecter in the control panel, and tried to "Connect to a network". But it didn't detect any wifi servers! Which is odd since I had always used the one my family used, and I am using wifi on that server at this moment!

When I tried to use troubleshoot on my "internet connections", it first showed me that the issue was "The Diagnostic Policy Service is not running" but then every other time I tried to troubleshoot again, it doesn't show any problems detected

And with the problem of the taskbar, I tried to search solutions, and found some. I right-clicked while on the desktop and clicked on "personalize". And my sources tol me to select an aero theme. However, all ofthe aero themes are greyed-out, and I am unable to select any of them. The only theme that I am able to select is my "unsaved theme", which has a square with a blue pirtion on the top that has a white bar in it, and the bottom, which is the white portion, and has a black bar across it. All the themes with the roundish edges and clear squares are unselectable...

I have no idea whats wrong with my computer now, would somebody please help me? Alnost all other programs are functioning fine, but the wifi is not connecting(Oh, and I am unable to adjust my screen brightness)

All help are thanked!

BTW, I wrote this on my iPad mini

No idea what the problem might be but it doesn't sound good.

Have you considered using System Restore to take your system back to when it was working correctly?

This would be by far the easiest way to fix this type of problem, the link shows you how.

Well since your cousin has an iPhone and lives near by I'd ask him first to make sure it's not him.
He may know the password to get onto your network.

I recently updated my Inspiron 14" 5459 to the Windows 10 anniversary update, i noticed that when my wifi access point changes or wifi signal drops or turning off wifi, my laptop semi-freezes, you could still scroll with the mouse or track pad and select open tabs but that's all, clicking other icons and even the windows start menu does not work, if you wait for more than 5 minutes, everything goes back to normal. Waiting around for about 5 minutes is annoying so what I do is press ctrl alt delete and from there restart the laptop. my wifi adapter is updated to the most recent version and also both graphics card (intel hd 520 and amd radeon m335) is also updated to the latest version. Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?

A:after Windows 10 anniversary update, Inspiron 5459 freezes if wifi is turned off or wifi access point is changed, is there a solution to this problem?

Please confirm the wireless card from the device manger or the network control panel. Also please update the BIOS firmware to the latest version. The BIOS update should ideally be version v1.2.2. Also please try system out with a LAN cable as well to confirm if is indeed caused by the wireless. Though this may not run a complete diagnostics on the network you can run a hardware diagnostics on the computer using the following steps

Shutdown the computer
Hold the 'Fn' key and turn on the computer
Let go of the 'Fn' key after 2 seconds

This is will initiate the H/w diagnostics. Please let us know if it completes or if you run into any errors. If you do run into any errors.

Hello I'm recently experiencing issues with my Dell Inspiron I have an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC adapter issue turned off WiFi and ever since yesterday it stopped working completely When I click on the wifi button in the taskbar it says the WiFi is quot Turned off quot However there's no way to turn it on Even if I click network settings and click the wifi toggle it instantly goes back to off I tried to go through the troubleshooter and it suggests that the physical switch is off However i have no physical switch and the only related key I have on my keyboard WiFi turned off issue is for the airplane mode and is currently off I tried to run a Ubuntu Live disk and it gave WiFi turned off issue the same issue radio hardware off or something similar To make it even weirder yesterday I had left the laptop alone for an hour or so and when I came back it was working again But this morning it was off again and it is not working ever since then Of course I tried restarting and even restoring from a previous backup but to no avail Please let me know if you have any suggestions Thanks in advance L EDIT I also tried reinstalling the drivers both the newest ones from Intel and the latest on Dell's website IIRC but nothing changed

A:WiFi turned off issue

Hi, given what you said about checking this with a boot disk, it sounds more like a hardware problem, assuming you know it worked with the boot disk previously.

(The erratic behaviour you're observing is odd as you know. However I also find MS providing the Wifi tile on the Action Centre (as well as my physical button) confusing).

Presumably you are not also using an ethernet connection.

You can get more information and lots of technical detail if you open
Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network Connections
& rt click on the WiFi connection and click 'Diagnose'.

You can also check these (shown with Wifi connected)

My wife has a toshiba Satellite L645D-S4040 running Windows 7 64 bit. This morning she ran an update and has since lost wifi and Fn F8 does not work. Went to Toshiba site and downloaded and ran the TVAP. It got rid of the Microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter and we still can't get the wifi to enable. Unfortunately she does not remember which update it was that she performed. Help.

Update: My wife remembered that the only change she made was to install Secunia PSI from this sites download section.

If all else fails you could read the documentation for your laptop to see what/where the wireless switch is. It may be the Fn + F5 key combination.

I recently bought an ASUS a456ur, and had windows 10 anniversary update installed into it. I had this problem: i can't turn off the wifi unless i turn on the airplane mode, and make all the connection turned off, including bluetooth, which i needed to connect to a bluetooth speaker of mine. And also, if i turned on the airplane mode, i can't turn it off by turning on wifi.
i tried to turn off the wifi by various way. i tried to disabling it from the menu popped out when you click the wifi logo from your notification bar, i tried to disabling it from the settings, and tried to disabling it from the actiion center, and none of them is working.
things i have done:
try disabling wifi from ubuntu, and it works,
updating the driver of the network devices

A:Wifi can't be turned off, unless by airplane mode

Even with the Function key combo you cannot? Sometimes you have to press Fn and the Function key, if you did not change it to standard Function key operation.

I've already consulted Samsung about this issue, and they want me to Refresh (windows 8) my laptop. I have important programs and I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT.

Started about half an hour ago, I plugged my laptop into the wired connection because it was downloading 6 GB. Plugging in a cord activates Airplane mode. In theory, once out of Airplane Mode, WiFi will turn back on. NORMALLY IT DOES, BUT NOW IT DOESN'T. THIS IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF.

A:WiFi turned off and won't turn back on.

Is this a second computer with the same issue?

I would suggest contacting Microsoft as it seems to be a software issue and not hardware. Especially if you can turn on the wireless manually.

Hi there

Recreate the wireless connection on your PC.
Windows 7 - Goto Control Pannel -> Network and Sharing Center.
Click on "Manage Wireless Networks" (Left Pane).
Remove the current wireless connection.

****Try the following only if you know how to setup a router from scratch or you have access to your ISP's tech support so that they can guide you....

Reset the router and start from scratch.
Hope this helps

It's always happened, at least ever since we upgraded his computer to windows 10, and then upgraded our internet from AT&T to cox (about a month ago).

My mom runs an old refurbished vista computer and I have an inspiron Windows 7 computer. Literally all he has to do is turn his machine on and the internet shuts off and reboots itself.

Does anyone have any idea why this is?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. My mom works at home and she would appreciate being able to work in peace without disruption.

A:No internet connection after I turned my laptop into wifi hotspot

To my knowledge the WiFi adapter work as either a connection point to a WiFi router/Wireless access point or AS a wireless Access Point, WiFi Hot Spot, but not both. So you would need to connect the notebook to a router (internet connection) with a Ethernet cable. Then the computer will take the internet from the Cable and send it out to connected devices.

Hi there
We just got my dad an ADVENT 7109 laptop. Its a great little machine for the money, but what we find very very annoying is that it boots up without having WIFI turned on.
It doesnt have a switch on it so you could permanently leave it on, if has a actual button(that can only be pressed once the pc has been turned on).
Does anyone know how I can make this laptop have wifi automatically turn itself on when I boot it up?
It is quite annoying.

A:Google redirect turned to no wifi internet connection, W7 Starter

An update...

After further poking, I found that this system had a partition which contained the original windows image. Since there was no valuable data on this computer I decided to go ahead with the recovery. I have regained my internet connection...and some sanity. However, I am thinking this may not be the end of the infection... or is it?

A:internet connection not shared by my laptop turned wifi hotspot

If the sharing tab is missing then it means that the driver isn't up to date. About the only way to fix that is to look for a more recent version of the wireless driver. Just updating or reinstalling the driver might be enough although some adaptors simply can't support this feature as per Paul Thurrott's page on this.

I recently got an update from Microsoft on Win 7, and immediately after it had finished updating I had no sound in any application (AIM, Skype, Chrome, Firefox, Youtube, etc.). This has happened before, and I ran Microsoft's Sound problems wizard and it always said that an option had been clicked off and that it had restored it. This time when I ran the wizard it says it detects no problems. I am sure it is the software, as it happens a lot with MS updates. Will downloading a new driver help? I can't go back to a previous configuration, I don't have one to go to. What should I Do? A computer without sound is like a bicycle without wheels.

I was playing War of the roses earlier, and my pc decided to turn off for no reason. I thought, ok, I'll just turn it back on after dinner and continue playing. But when I pressed the on button, nothing happened. I tried a few more times and opened up my case. I unplugged the power cable then plugged it back in, and the CPU fan turned on for about a second, then went dead, and this happens everytime I unplug and replug. I'm pretty certain it's a PSU fault, but I just need someone to clarify this for me before I buy a new one. If it isn't a PSU problem then please tell me what else it could be and what I should do about it? By the way, I only built it a week ago, so my warranty is still valid, if that changes anything. Thanks in advance <3

Hi, I have noticed that while video editing/rendering (premiere) or performing any resource hungry task that my processor might only be up to 30% usage and 700MB of my 2GB of RAM is being used.

Why does my laptop not use all of the resources available to it to complete the task in a faster time?

Is there anything I can do to say "hey, you have more memory and a faster processor. Use it!"

A:Max CPU and RAM capability not being used - WHY?

My name is Mike, I’m a Technical Analyst located at Dell corporate headquarters in Round Rock, TX. I’m part of an internet outreach team developed to interact with the online community regarding technical questions and issues that customers face with Dell products. I read your question and wanted to chime in. The operating system should allocate the maximum resources available based on system specs, software demand and hardware availability. This means that if the software is calling for a specific amount of RAM, HDD space, and processing power, the OS will evaluate the systems current load and decide how much of the requested allocations can be granted. If the maximum request is possible, meaning the allocations needed are available for use (not being used by another program) then they will be released to the program for use. A better way to look at it is the program will only use as much of a resource as it needs to run stably. If more resources are still available while the program is running at full throttle then you’re actually doing well.

Now, you can set an application priority over another (excluding needed system functions) in the device manager. If you click on the Process tab and locate the application, right click and select Priority, this will let you tell the OS what priority you would like to run the application at. Think of priority as amount of available resources. It’s best to not set a priority too high, it’s usually better to set other applications to a lower priority to release more resources for other application to use. I hope this helps.

Thank you,

Dell customer advocate

How can I tell if the PCI slot I used is 2.1 compliant - or how can I make it compliant if it isn't? Or is this the problem, or am I missing something?

i have heard that windows xp has a built-in unzipping capability for compressed files. i have WINZIP-can i get rid of it and use instead the xp version, and if so,how can i access the xp program?

A:win xp unzip capability

Yes you can get rid of winzip. I have XP and have never used winzip on it. All you need to do is uninstall winzip and xp will make your default compression program XP. It is a built in program so there is no way of opening the specific program. The way it works is if you have a zip file you just double click it to open it like you would any other file. Then once open it shows you the zip files contents and you can use them right there. If you would like them extracted you can use the extract button that will appear on the left side of the screen once you open the zip file. To compress, you need to select the files you would like compressed and then right click and go down to Send To and select "Compressed (zipped) Folder." Best of luck. Any questions, let me know.

I get the error message "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while burning the file to the disk." The error message directs me to a Windows Media Player Help website indicating error code cood10da. It suggests that I try a lower burn speed. I tried all speeds with same results. I also tried going into Device Manager and checked the box next to "Enable CD burning," but this didn't work. After this I tried unistalling the device and restarting computer to have it reinstalled. Since then, Device Manager, doesn't show the box for "Enable CD burning." Still get same error message when try to burn CD. Thanks for your help!!!

I was recently hit with an auto update of Win 10. After three day I was finally able to get into my Inspiron N5050 and revert back to Win 7. I've had little glitches but thought things were getting better. I have no print ability at all. Not local with USB or via wifi. I've deleted printers and reinstalled. Reinstalled drivers using compatibility mode. Updated the firmware on my wifi router. Nothing. The printer is connected fine to wifi. I can also "see" the printer when I map the network on the laptop. When I send a test page or print from a document, it shows that it was sent but never connects and prints. With the issues Win 10 has caused with printers, is it possible my computer still thinks is running 10? What am i overlooking and what else can I do to fix this?

I was watching the PDC demo again and remembered the system being more touch friendly. Now, I understand they demo'd this on a HP TouchSmart, but from her description, I took it as that it could be done with any touchscreen via mouse bindings. Is that how anyone else took it, because I have a little HP L5006tm and it's not exactly acting all fancy

most likely the the touchsmart also support multitouch using alpha (read pre-beta drivers)
with win 7
ive read on and it does not allow for multitouch bindings
touchscreen is usable for your monitor and it should work great just not the flashy stuff
it all depends on the hardware

A:Bluetooth Capability

Hi: What model wireless network adapter does your notebook have? If you don't know, go to the device manager, click to expand the network adapters device category, and there you will find the name and model number of the wireless network adapter. In today's notebooks the wireless and bluetooth radios are integrated onto the same circuit board. Some model wireless cards do not have the combination wireless/bluetooth radios. I would say that 50% of the HP consumer notebooks sold today do not come with built in bluetooth networking.
