Laptop screen pulsing

Q: Laptop screen pulsing

Can anyone help,
I have a compaq presaio cq61

the other day the screen went dark, could just see the screen in the background, scrolled through forums and decided that it could be the inverter.
Purchased and fitted a new one screen lights up fine but now is continuously pulsating. Does anyone have an idea on this, could it be the wrong inverter? or other problems.

Your help in this would be extremely appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

OK so to start with the computer got soda spilled on it and I'm trying to fix it. I took it all apart and dried it all out and left it over night to try and get it all dry. I put it back together today and it is not starting the power comes on and fan spins but than goes right back off. I have also not seen any thing on the screen yet not sure it its bad or just from in not starting. Not sure if its just done or if anyone knows what it could be or a fix for it.

A:Laptop Pulsing on and off

Rather than letting it dry, did you use distilled water to flush the soda off of the hardware?
Soda is acidic. Put something with rust in Coke and it eats off the rust.
If you did not rinse off the soda, your motherboard contacts and other metal parts might be etched by the soda.

I am trying to set up a Dell XPS400 with Windows 7. The computer said it needed to update the Nvidia driver, but when it tried to install the download, the computer said it was incompatible, so I assumed it didn't install. But somewhere under all those windows was one that said the computer needed to restart. When I did that, I got a black screen with a blinking cursor and I can't get to anything except the F2 menu. I have no video control at all so can't do any of the suggestions I've seen. I've tried putting in the Windows 7 disks but I still get no video. What can I do? I'm pretty sure I just need to somehow restore the video driver. I heed help!

My previous montior kept pulsing which made me annoyed so i got a brand new one and its doing the same thing but worse what could make it do this?

A:Monitor keeps pulsing

Electrical interference. Try plugging it into different outlets to be sure the power itself isn't causing this. If that doesn't fix it you'll have to move the monitor to a different physical location.

Hi there,I received my Thinkpad P40 Yoga roughly 6 months ago and have not had many issues, however, for the past few weeks I've noticed my fan at times pulses with a very annoying sound.  At times when my fan runs, it sounds like it is pulsing.  Sometimes it's constant, while other times it pulses and I'm not entirely sure why.  I looked around and read a few posts stating that sometimes a BIOS update is required.  I got software from the Lenovo website to automatically update it, but the sound remains.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

A little hard to explain. My google side bar (weather, note pad, pictures, time) started pulsing. I tracked it down to Outlook express. When I opened my mail the pulsing stopped. About the only thing I fiddled with lately was the Windows Search 4. I removed it based on a post here that it is not necessary. Any hints where to look for a problem.

This is an update to a post from April of 2008. I use Windows Vista on a Sony laptop and from time to time when I boot up, my windows would pulse and pop up windows that allow selections such as the "shut down, restart, sleep" closes too fast to select. What I found is that I'm using an external 4 port USB hub (powered by the laptop USB port) and connected to the hub were two external hard drives and two thumb drives. If I boot up without the hub plugged in, the pulsing doesn't occur. I believe the voltage regulator, etc. cannot handle that much power sourcing during startup and that does something to Windows. If I plug the port in after startup, the pulsing never starts.
Simply unhook any external USB devices, reboot and see if that fixes your problem.

A:Pulsing Power and front!

Definitely strange. Though wrong drivers can damage hardware, theoretically, it is very rare and not likely if you used the correct driver and the sound worked.

It may just be coincidence. But I'd vote power supply before CPU or board. Try a replacement if you have one.

Of course, check all internal connections, cards, and RAM.

Hi everyone,

I have a Dell Dimension E510, and lately I've become aware of this humming sound that pulses on and off constantly. It's not something that starts up when I run too many applications or anything. It just goes all the time, whenever the computer is on. Each pulse lasts for about a second and just repeats at a constant rate.

Do you know what might be doing this? I gather it is likely the fan or the hard drive. Do you know how I might fix this?

Thank you,

Hello, I have an issue with the fan on Inspiron One 2330.
Issue: The fan pulses consistently. On, off, on, off, on. It doesn't matter what I am doing. I have closed all applications and terminated any robust processes. There is no change.
What I've Done So Far:

I've update the BIOS.
I've checked and cleaned the fan.
I've run diagnostics and both thermal and video fan measures check out fine (plus no other errors).
I've manually reviewed and updated (as needed) most high-value drivers, such as chipsets and video cards.

Any thoughts on what I should try next?
FYI, Windows 10 new install.

I have tried it without any cards or accessories with no luck also checked the memory

A:Weird power pulsing problem

If the power supply is good and other parts have been eliminated, all that is left are the main board, processor and the case (case: possible grounding or stuck switch).

Please give us more information on this 'pulsing'. How long does each pulse last and how often does it 'pulse'? Does the machine turn on as soon as power is applied to the power supply or does it attempt to power up only when the power switch is pressed?

Have you made sure the power switch isn't sticking closed (closed circuit)?
Relevancy 45.58%

On powering up the blue circle behind the cursor pulses regularly together with the thumbnail and blue header which pulse alternatively and I cannot use the keyboard during one of these pulse cycles which occur about every 3 seconds which makes it impossible to type anything! I have 'solved' this occasionally by taking battery out, disconnecting power and opening in Safemode and then closing down and rebooting normally but there is no clear pattern to resolve this except to leave the machine permanently powered up - which works until the next Windows update and off we go again.

A:Pulsing blue circle behind the cursor

Have you waited til it was done ? Could you describe the issue a little more precisely.

My Dell Inspiron 1545 has been sitting for a while, and when I went to plug it it and try to use it, it would not turn on. All I got is a pulsing power light like when it's in sleep.
I recently replaced the battery as well as the charger, because the original battery was shot and the charger was in horrible shape. I also replaced the power jack a while back because the pins inside were bent and the laptop got no power.
I had successfully used the laptop for a while after replacing these parts, but now it won't turn on. Whether I'm on battery, AC power, or both, it only flashes/pulses when I press the power button. If I hold the power button, it will shut off.
What's wrong here? I have checked and re-seated both memory modules, also testing both slots and nothing changed.

A:Inspiron 1545 Won't Power On, Pulsing Power Light Like When In Sleep Mode

Thank you for the update.
Well, when you power on the system, if you hear the fan spinning and the HDD turning on, connect an external monitor and check if there is any display.
Reseat the cmos battery and check when possible. Since the system draws power from the adapter, at this point, I would not suspect the adapter. Also, remove the memory modules and disconnect the HDD and check if the system comes on and beeps - indicating a missing HDD / memory.
As advised in my previous post, if nothing works and the indications do not change, I would suspect the motherboard.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

When my PC is idle (no applications open and not online), my hard disk seems to "pulse" at regular intervals - say every couple of seconds like there is some background activity.

What could be the cause of this activity ?

I am wondering if it is related to the fact that when I play a DVD on my PC or run an animated screen-saver, the DVD or animation seems to freeze for a split second every few seconds - seemingly in time with the pulses of hard disk activity. I do not get smooth paly-back or animation. Any ideas why this might happen ? In this case, is it just that my graphics card is not up to scratch (16 MB only) ?

My PC is a Dell PIII 500 MHz (XPS T500), 512 MB RAM running Windows XP Pro.

Would be grateful for any theories re the above.

A:[SOLVED] Hard Disk "Pulsing"

These are just thoughts which may lead you or others to different ideas - I do not really classify these as promising trouble-shooting leads...

You may, indeed have something running in the background with a high enough priority to momentarily affect your games/animations (there are many services running in XP).

I can't see where your video card would have any influence on your disk drive - except - if the card shares main memory it could drive the paging rate up. This does not sound like what you describe.

There is a potential for a conflict between software driven sleep/hibernate (Windows feature) and hardware/firmware driven functions which are similar (set in the BIOS). This can cause a disk to attempt to spool down then catch itself and spool right back up. This, also, does not sound like your problem.

Sorry I cannot be of more help. I would suggest you do more investigating of your system. Check task-manager (ctrl+alt+delete to invoke) and look at the processes which are consuming resources. Run msconfig (Start>Run>Msconfig) to see what is auto-started. Any additional information you can glean may help solve this.

I have an LED monitor and when I leave it powered off for an extended period of time (a few hours) and turn it back on the image 'pulses' and will sometimes force the monitor into sleep mode. If I unplug the power and plug it back in, the monitor works fine for as long as I have it on (even if it's on for hours). The same thing happens again when I power it down for a few hours or overnight.

If you can get it to work by tapping on the machine, then it doesn't sound like a software problem. It could be a bad system board or memory.

I would call HP again and see about getting service on the hardware.

I have a 2 year old Gateway laptop which, I understand, was actually made by Acer under license.

All of a sudden a vertical line appears midway in the screen display. Sometimes it is a red line, sometimes a white line.

Does anyone have any idea why this occurs? Is this a sign of the "kiss of death" for my laptop display, to follow? Does this mean the "end is near" for the screen?

I just bought an HP Pavillion dv6-7014nr and I love it! Except for one thing. I upgraded to the 1920x1080 screen to get the HD quality and the matte display. Everything on this screen is so tiny, its uncomfortable to read. I have increased the text size in windows to 130% dpi and I have downloaded and extension in Firefox to keep the zoom level I like. My problem is that with this increased DPI setting, the text in programs, such as iTunes gets cut off or overlaps. I was just wondering if there was a solution to this problem, or is it just something I have to live with?
Thanks very much!

A:[SOLVED] 1920x1080 screen resolution on a 15.6" Laptop Screen

1920x1080 doesn't suit everyone on a 15.6" screen as it's really more suited to large-screen external monitors (20" or more). It's big plus of course is that it gives you much more screen space to use for multi-tasking or using apps which have many palettes (like Photoshop). Personally I think 1920x1080 is way too high for the average laptop screen size unless you've got perfect eyesight.

If you don't need all that space, you may find that setting a lower resolution (and changing DPI & zoom levels back to their defaults) is more in line with what your eyesight can deal with. It probably won't look as pin-sharp as the native 1920x1080 resolution though, but at least you shouldn't get some app Windows extending beyond the screen edges.

Need help here.

I have a HP laptop DV9543cl with 32bit Vista. Last Thursday (6/3/2010), Vista update icon showed up and asked me to install the update. As always, i did that. Once install was done, it asked for a reboot which i did. It started booting up again and when it finished Windows logo screen, it went blank and no display with all the other lights were in correct status. I waited for a long time before attempting a reboot. Since then i don't see anything on the screen after the initial BIOS screen (Which is also all jumbled up). I tried F8 (BIOS) and F11(Restore) but no screen. Don't know what to do but i am pretty sure that Laptop is working ok just not displaying anything. I am going to try Remote desktop on it now.

The image displayed on the screen of my Toshiba Satellite laptop is offset so that not all of the tray at the bottom is visible, and there is about 3/4" of black screen at the right side of the display.

It seems to have coincided with my having installed a malware-ridden application. Although I think I have expunged all of the malware, the screen display problem persists.

I have tried restarting, and I poked around in the Control Panel options, but no obvious solution has presented itself.

Any suggestions?

I have an M60 laptop that recently started failing the boot process after the Windows XP splash screen, just before the login screen. It does the same thing with an external monitor attached. If I start it in Safe Mode it will boot. When I restart out of Safe Mode it boots without a problem. The next time I try to boot in regular mode the same thing happens.

I have tried removing memory and switching DIMMS around; I have tried replacing the current hard drive with the original hard drive which was working when I replaced it and it has the same symptoms. I did this as any easy way to eliminate viruses, trojans or corrupt drivers. It appears to be a hardware problem, but I am stuck. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks

Sounds like a faulty card or cable, if your able strip the laptop down and find the cable that links the screen to the motherboard, it may be loose, if the graphics card is a plug in type then try reseating it.

Other than that your gonna need a visit to a pc shop....

When I attach an external LCD to the laptop, it shows the Windows load or Windows resume graphics on the external monitor, but not on my laptop screen. As soon as the Desktop Screen with the Windows Login appears, it then appears on my laptop as well.

I also can't seem to get to safe mode. I push f8 and it never comes up I haven't installed any new software or hardware to cause this.

Hi! I reinstalled windows the day before yesterday and since then every time I turn my laptop on after entering my password the screen turns off for like 2 seconds then turns back on. This have never happened to me before. I tried putting my old windows back via Macrium Reflect and I even tried reinstalling it again but neither of those things helped. I have an Acer Aspire V3-572g laptop. Any idea what caused this and how could I fix it? Thanks in advance!

A:My laptop screen turns off then back on after the log-in screen

Hi, as you quite reasonably expect, shouldn't normally happen. That does happen e.g. after changing language, and for rather longer, but only the once, but I can't imagine that's relevant here.

Does it happen in safe mode?
If not, try a clean boot, and if that's ok, process of elimination.

Were any of your install attempts a clean install rather than an upgrade? If so and it still happens then you could try the version of your graphics driver used in Win 8 (but note Win 10/MS will quickly replace it unless you take precautions- see Tutorials)

My laptop screen has just broken.
I have attached a picture of it.
Will this be a inverter or a screen problem/replacement needed?

A:Laptop Screen Light Off, but screen is still on

Can you explain the situation a little more clearly...Are you saying that the laptop is apparently "off" but there is display visible on the screen? And are you also saying that you cannot power up the laptop at present; it won't boot up etc.?

Hello friends, I recently got the Gnome desktop environment on the Ubuntu Software Center, and I used the gdm and startx command as said by another forum site. Nothing wrong, they said to logout, tried to login again, goes to a black screen and sends me back to the Ubuntu login screen. Tried again, same result, panicked. Looked up video tutorial on how to fix it, they said to access the control panel via ctrl-alt-f1 or f2, went to a black screen, no text at all, computer runs fine, no crashing. Is there a special way to access the terminal in a System76 computer, I really don't know very confusing? Is there a way to login with the guest session? I use Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf on my laptop. What causes this, I read on Ubuntu forums it's driver issues with Ubuntu and Nvidia, but I have my suspections with the Gnome desktop environment.

Hi, my laptop screen (HP) has started going black occasionally. I think it is getting too warm; I now have a chill pad under it, but it doesn't seem to help. I can turn it off and right back on and it's fine. Any ideas? Thank you.

A:Laptop screen

Its just possible you have the Power Options set to turn off the monitor after some period of non-use. You can open the Power Options by going to Start> Run> type in powercfg.cpl and OK. On the Power Schemes tab, you will see settings for turning off the monitor after a selected period of time. If you do not wish for this to happen at all, select Never from the drop down menu.

See the attached screen shot

BTW... This is for XP

Hi all,

My laptop screen is all of a sudden dim and der appears watermarks in the bottom.

A:Laptop screen becoming dim

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Please provide more details of the problem.

By 'watermarks' do you mean patterns on the screen or actual water stains or what ?

Make and model of the laptop would be helpful too.

Managed to drop something quite heavy on my laptop which has broken the lcd display. Only had the laptop 5-6 months but would guess being my own fault the warrenty will not cover this so looking to purchase a new screen.

Was wondering whether the replacement screen would need to be of the same make and model or any 15.4" screen in this case would fit.

Computer is a Dell Inspiron 1501 and screen is 15.4" wide screen XGA TFT Display with Truelife 1280x800. I searched for that particular screen on Ebay and got 1 result with a price of 160 pounds. Is this what im looking at paying? or would a cheaper alternative be available.

any help appreciated

A:laptop screen :(

Use a torch to light up the screen, see if you can see anything. It could just be a case of the backlight has failed rather than a major component.

Started here

Okay, so I replaced the inverter and still have the same exact problem. What should be my next step? It doesn't seem like the button that turns off the screen is stuck as I have gotten to it with a pair of tweezers. Is there a way I can test it? My next thought is the backilght itself, but I am not sure if a burnt out backlight would cause this type of problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I purchased a used Dell Laptop from the local school system. It was reformatted with Windows XP. Works just fine BUT occasionally a green line appears as to provide a split screen display. This line appears at random times and last for a few minutes or at other times quite awhile. The function of the computer is not affected. The computer is 5 years and has not been abused. Is this the start of a screen failure or is it something else? Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks

A:Laptop Screen

It could be an early sign of the green line becoming permanently stuck on and it may also be why the school was getting rid of it. The only fix might be to replace the LCD panel.

Did you buy it with any kind of warranty or "As-is"?

A:Laptop screen won't come on

Hi acefsj,

Have you tried pluggin in an external monitor into the VGA port to checkl if there may be a fualt on the mobo ?

Also i have (on many occasions i must sadly admint) replaced a laptop screen only to find i missed a cable along the way.

Please help me to solve the problem from my laptop! There is nothing displayed on the screen of my laptop when I turn it on. How can i solve the problem? In case of changing the screen, how about the price and where I can change it?

A:screen laptop

The first thing to try is a hard reset: Assuming that does not work, the next thing is to try hooking up an external monitor to the vga or HDMI port and see if you get video on an external screen. If so, then we know it is the screen panel and replacing it will likely fix the problem.  If there is no picture on the external screen then the problem is more serious than a bad screen.  Can you describe what is happening when you try to turn it on? Do any keys or lights flash or blink?

Have new Dell laptop WinXP with Radeon 7500C video card. Laptop has an S-video output but in fooling with "Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Displays" and toggling between making the TV or the laptop "1" or "2", I can get the desktop to appear on one or the other but not both. Do I need a second video card to run the TV? or a "DUAL USE" card?? I know in meeting presentations (laptop & projector), the laptop image and the big screen image both appear together. Is this due to two cards in the laptop or a monitor output to the projector which is then set to be compatable with the existing laptop screen setting?

Quick, possibly impossible question.

Is there any software I could possibly use to somehow hook up my old PC to my laptop and use my laptop as a monitor?

See, I have a monitor but it's pretty hard to get at the moment since I put it away because I was in dire need of space (big old chunky monitor) and to get it would mean to go through a lot of obstacles and a lot of hassles, so maybe I could be saved by some oddball programmer who decided "Hey! I want to use my laptop as a monitor for my old PC, let's make the code!"

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you for your time an patience.

My screen is becoming more dim. I have the screen brightness on high, have tried high performance power setting. Majority of time laptop is operated with adapter plugged (no battery).

Any adjustments that can be made ? Feasible to repair or best to replace ?

(No problems in past, system meets my needs)

Advice appreciated !

Sounds like a hardware issue. Typically this is a failure of the backlight or the inverter which powers it.
