noob here hope someone can help me..
i physically took out my hard drive from my desktop computer and connected it to a HDD dock to transfer data to my laptop.
when i put the hard drive back inside my desktop computer, C:\ and D:\ appears as a folder instead and cannot open when i double click. i have to right click and click open for it to work.
so i did a format on D:\ because there's no data in it originally and now it's back to the original D:\ hard disk icon and works fine when i double click it. but i have alot of valuable info in C:\ that's too large to transfer anywhere else to format.
does anyone know a way to restore the C:\ icon back to the original hard drive icon and double click works without wiping out the data?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just installed Windows 7 Home Pre x64 on my computer. When i was installing i mistakenly didnt format the hard drive befor reinstalling, neither did i parition the drive. Now in my Local Disk Drive (C there is a folder in it called "Local Disk". This folder contains all the computer files, user files, and program files. In the root directory of the Main C Drive, the tw program files folders appear, with the Windows folder also. There is also a folder that says Windows.old, Windows.old.ooo. What do i do?
I would reinstall delete the old partition and create a new 1 unless you are wanting to save any of your old files. The windows.old are your old files. You have two operating systems on the same partition, I believe.
Sorry maybe this is a silly question , i want ask ... can i hidden folder like Program Files, Users, or else anything else at Local Disk C, just Hidden the folder...
can i do that? if i do that have any windows will corrupted?
Why do you want to hide those directories?http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/209113-ask-about-folder-local-disk-c.html

Hello,When I click on "My Computer" and then on "Local Disk C:" I have an oddly named folder. The name of the folder is 56e35b9f1684e9418c344fe4c62fa0 Inside of it there are two more folders. One named "amd64" and another named "i386" Each folder has the same files in it. Can anyone tell me what this folder is, and what it is for? Is it from a Windows update? Is it safe to delete?I am running Windows XP SP3. Thanks for any input.
I had something similar on my computer at the office. I'm almost certain it is from a Windows update. I deleted it and haven't noticed any adverse effects.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/238478/weird-folder-in-local-disk-c/
About a week ago. I noticed that I new folder appears under my Local Disk Drive. I do not have a clue what this folder is for. I have attached a couple of pictures of the folder (see below). The folder is titled "RD4B335D2AF9F44185AFC417F8D8D4B473DR".
Can someone tell me what this is? I also attached a HJT log.
I have noticed a strange folder appearing on the root of my C drive called "028ba83bcfc3da7a66a99d" which contains a log file named "msxml4-KB927978-enu"
I have no idea how this got here and it looks very suspicious to me. I have attached a shortened version of the log file as the original exceeds the 200KB limit for uploading. Would any of you guys be able to have a look at it and let me know if there has been anything installed on my machine? If you need the rest of the text I can upload it in another post. Any help would be much appreciated.
That's a log for Windows Update KB927978 and if the update was successful you can delete the file. Here's more info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927978 notice at the bottom it says 'Although it is optional, you can remove the log file and the folder.'

In most question disk Solved: folder local computers Solved: local disk folder question I have seen the local disk has several folders made up of seemingly meaningless numbers and letters for example eb de a a c f is a folder in my Solved: local disk folder question desktop s c There are plenty others like this in the hard drive and I have seen the same thing on other computers Inside these folders are other folders all named quot update quot and in side them there is a notepad file CSetupExtension CSetupExtension Entering CSetupExtension CSetupExtension Leaving they all contain this My question is what do these do and is it safe to delete them I would assume they are safe to delete they just look like an update log for a program that thinks it is too important to store its update logs in its own personal folder but i wouldnt like to delete something important I have seen the same thing occur on other computers as well Thankyou for any information you can give me nbsp
I've noticed a strange issue (see image attached). I've found that there's a new folder, that has appear inside other folder I've been working recently. The new folder, is called "C:", as the name of the drive where I've got windows xp installed. The new appeared folder "C:" behaves as a link to C:\ when I double-click it, but if I try to delete it, then windows notifies me that I'm trying to delete C:\windows folder and that that's not possible. Indeed, trying to delete the subfolder "C:" is the same as delete the whole "C:" drive.
Men, you never know what's the next surprise windows will bring to you.
I don't know exactly what to ask. Do you think this is normal? Thanks in advance!
I have recently installed a 256GB SSD Hard Drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on it. After launching Disk Manager, it appears that Windows thinks this is two seperate physical hard drives (Disk 0 and Disk 1). Disk 0 is 238GB (containing Windows) and Disk 1 is 8.00GB. This disk is unallocated and cannot be initialized. An error message appears "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error".
How can I reconfigure this SSD drive so that Windows 7 recognises it as one drive, in its entirety?
Post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management.
Was this new SSD the ONLY drive connected at the time you installed Windows and is it the only physical disk currently in the PC?
Are your system specs correct? 7 GB of RAM (?), 1 SSD, 4 HDD?
Ok, so I just upgraded to W7 and was going through a process of organizing the "libraries" and I noticed (possibly of my own doing but am not sure) that the second drive in my system (B) was sitting there in my user folder. My question is, is that normal? How did it get there and how do I correct it if it isn't suppose to be there. Here is a picture of what I am talking about...
As I understand it, this temp folder is a place where temporary files are stored during program installations and uninstallations. you seen this http://perfdata.com on other help sites saying some programs will store folders and files there.
That's completely possible. Are you asking if you should delete that folder? Are you using any Ricoh printers, etc?http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-7/dont-recongnise-tempricoh-folder-in-local-disk-c/19050.html

hey, what you must have done is drug it over there by accident, as you can see it is still located were it is supposed to be further below, all you did was add a link to it. so you can safely erase the link, or ignore it, its up to you.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/133628-local-disk-inside-user-directory-folder.html

If the eject button doesn't work, then the drive needs to be replaced. If this is a desktop, check the connections.
I've seen this problem reported elsewhere, but I haven't found a solution. I'm reinstalling Windows 7 Professional SP1 from scratch on a Dell Precision M4600 laptop. Yesterday, I went through the entire process of installing the OS, the drivers and running system update. After that was completed, I ran Disk Cleanup, whereupon I noticed a random folder being created in AppData\Local\Temp, which is almost a duplicate of the DISM folder in Windows\System32. This folder got created when I selected the option to clean up system files.
To be certain it wasn't being caused by one of the drivers or system updates, I reinstalled the OS again from scratch and checked again. It was there immediately after the first boot, so I suppose it's being caused by an update in SP1. Any ideas how to fix it?
I attached dism.log and here is the contents of the folder:
Anyone have an idea what's causing this?http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/273322-dism-folder-being-created-appdata-local-temp-disk-cleanup.html

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.
Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.
A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"
I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.
When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.
I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."
PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES
With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)
Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.
If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.
Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.
If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.
Ok so what im wondering is...
I have heard of mounting an ISO as a CD drive.
I was wondering if i could create a folder and mount it as a CD and then add and remove files as i wanted.
I think some thumb drives came with a program that did something like this.
Hello I found this forum out of necessity I have done a folder folder Sync pc local local office on w/ Surface Pro??? on fair share of googling this question without any luck resolution Hopefully someone here will have a useful answer I use a program at my office that stores data Sync local folder on office pc w/ local folder on Surface Pro??? in the Sync local folder on office pc w/ local folder on Surface Pro??? local program folder on my pc However i also use this program on my tablet surface pro these are both windows devices respectively so i'm hoping that works to my advantage Most of the resolutions i found on google involved using my OneDrive however the Local folder is approx GB depending on the number of projects so this is not an option I would rather find a solution that does not involve an external HDD at this is just one more piece of equipment to carry and i worry about performance issues while working on the projects In my opinion the ideal solution is Use the program while i am at the office the files save to the Local folder on my PC and then when my tablet is awake the modified files automatically sync over our wifi connection The wifi aspect isnt a deal breaker i am fine with syncing via a USB cord as well The main goal is i want the projects data from the Local folder to sync with either my PC or my tablet depending on which file has the most recent time stamp So obviously if i work on a project during the week and need to view modify it outside the office any changes made will sync to the PC the next time I connect via the wifi or USB I am also open to alternative solutions that i may be missing Cross posted to Windows Forum as well
I would agree that having a cloud storage would be nice should the office server go down. You do know that you don't have to sync the entire share folder and programs right? You can sync just individual files that are actually being used and changed. As far as extra storage goes, no need to tote around an external HD. Why not get a couple USB 3.0 flash drives or sdcards? And I really do mean get 2-3, just in case one should fail you have some kind of a backup. You can never rely on a single backup.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/553249/sync-local-folder-on-office-pc-w-local-folder-on-surface-pro/
My Local Disk is out of space so i'd like to add additional space from my extra drive but I'm not able to this is what I have under my disk management
even when i turn new volume into unallocated space i still cant extend?
Edit: ive tried using ease use partition but i cant resize c drive please help im not very tech savvy with these kinds of things but ive been looking all over for a solution it might be right before my eyes and i dont realize
You can not do this as these are two different disks, you can extend a partition within a drive but not to another drive.http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/70934-cant-extend-local-disk-drive-8-1-a.html
Ok so I was looking through my computer and found this
I'm pretty much sure I didn't intall a new HD so what going on here?
Can you access it? Is there anything on it?
Try clicking Start and right-click 'Computer' and select Manage. What shows up under 'Drive Management'?
I'm not very technology-savvy. I believe I have/had a virus that doesn't/didn't allow me to open my Local Disk by double-clicking. An error would appear saying "Windows cannot find 'resycled/boot.com". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
I looked up my error online and followed the instruction of someone (probably shouldn't have), where I deleted the "boot.com" in my Registry Editor.
However, now, whenever I attempt to open my Local Disk by double-clicking, instead of getting the "Window cannot find...." error, I now get: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association Folder Options control panel."
I have absolutely no clue what to do. Any help? Please?
tttony, Try the "Drive Association Fix" at the link below. Instructions are on the page.
I keep getting a message that reads: "you are running low on disc space on local disk c. to free up space on this drive by deleting old or unneccessary files click here." The message comes up on the botton bar and has the drive c icon. When I click on it, it brings me to scan disk which I have run numerous times over the last few weeks and continue to get this message. I have uninstalled a bunch of stuff that is never used and still have this problem. I need a solution. Thank you Kevin C.

I have 2 networked PC and one of them has an old dos program that only runs on C drive. Despite it's an old program, it still runs on Windows xp. This pc with the dos program shares the drive so I can map it to my computer. Is there any way to map the network drive from that pc to a folder on my C partition? Both computers have Windows xp installed on C drive.

Problem is, depending on the version of Windows you're using, the image from your old machine likely won't work on the new one. If it's Windows 2000 or XP, the two machines must have the same I/O chipset, or the image will bluescreen on the new hardware, and you'll need to at least do a repair install to get it working again (there are other workarounds that can be done before imaging, but they get somewhat involved). In the end, it's probably more trouble than it's worth.
If you're mostly worried about your work on the old machine, just take the drive from it and plug it into the new one as a secondary drive, so you can access and copy off your files.
I would like to know if there is a way to get Windows XP pro to think that a map network drive is a local hard disk. I'm trying to get my ftp Filezilla server to show a folder from another computer on my network but the software is not compatible with network drives, it really needs to be a local drive to work. Links don't work either.
I've tried the "subst" command in DOS but it only creates another map network drives.
Is there a software be like Deamon Tools (for virtual cd) but for network folder instead of iso file ?
Mapping a network drive makes a network share work like a local disk. A network drive is the closest you will get to a Local Disk without putting the other drive in your local pc.
I need to gain some space on the local C drive I still have low space with a red line running through the bar on bottom the Icon of the C drive local disk.. I tried various things like indexing ,disk clean, shrink and volum check and repair , how ever the Red line is still there but my mail and IE 9 works pretty fast , so whats the fix to get rid of the Red line or just leave it ?
The red line on your disk space usage is warning you that you're below the threshold of the disk defragmentation utility being fully effective. In general, you are best to have at least 10% of your disk space free. The other reason for the warning is that Vista can swell or shrink by a number of gigabytes as it downloads updates, creates restore points, and does other activities. When you're down to less than 10% free, that can have a negative impact on system performance.
To get yourself back above 10%, there are a number of things you can do. I suggest the following:
Uninstall bloatware from your computer (these are programs that came with your computer that you never use).Delete any files remaining in your Temp folder.Go to Piriform and download the well known and trusted CCleaner. With CCleaner installed, run the "Cleaner" icon to find and eliminate any junk or unused files. NOTE: Do not click on "Registry"--it's not recommended to use 3rd party tools to clear out registry entries.Run the "Tools" --> "System Restore" in CCleaner and delete older restore points, leaving the two most recent ones. Only do this if you know you won't need to roll back any earlier (meaning the 2nd most recent restore point is trustworthy).
I also recommend going through the "Speed Up Vista Performance" tutorial. These tips are located there, and many others that you might find useful.

Last evening I formatted a hd installed in a USB external case hooked to a laptop. During the process I noticed an option to name the laptop something other than, Local Disk (E, so I did.
Now my Question is; if the renaming option is available for Local Disk (C would the format process be selective and just change the disk name, or would the process be global and wipe the the drive while renaming it?
System configured as RAID 1 (mirror) and works well until this day. From today DVD/RW Drive Shows Up As Hard Drive! Under conmputer mannagment all drives shows correctly. I tried everything - unninstall, tried diferent DVD/RW drive, tried assign a new letter etc. Nothing does not help to to solve. Maybe you have some ideas?
Hi, Welcome to SevenForums.
Not sure whether this will help resolve your problem but no harm in trying.
Rebuild your icon cache. That is what comes to my mind.
Create a manual System Restore point ( just in case you need to go back ) and then try this.
Icon Cache - Rebuild
Hi, im not too computer savy, i was just wondering if there was a way to maybe password a 2nd drive on a system to keep important files etc from being acessed by friends/family. I share my computer alot, and i'd rather make my 2nd drive a sort of personal drive for myself that cannot be used by just anyone.

I want to rearrange my disk letters. I have a cdrw and a DVDRW plus 4HDDS the first of which is partitioned. i am running xp pro. The dvdrw is set as master on secondary and its slave is the cdrw. when i go to rearrage the drive letters, the cdrw doesnt show up though it shows up when i click on "my computer" any help?
Look a bit closer in Disk Management. Optical drives are only displayed in the graphical representation, and they don't have anything displayed on the right, just the drive letter and icon on the left. Right click on the drive icon and you can change it's drive letter.

That could be either a recovery partition or a diagnostics partition don't mess with it, both should be hidden to the regular oshttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/112129/a-fat32-local-diskg-recently-appeared-as-a-hard-drive/
Either with my startup today, or sometime in the last day or two, all my drives/partitions in Windows Explorer (and XYplorer) have lost their labels and are now showing as "Local Disk." Looking in Windows 8 Computer Management and EaseUs Partition Manager, the labels are there, as shown in the screenshot. I ran all three main repair modules of Yamicsoft Windows 8 Manager and there have been a few reboots, but still the same. Any ideas what might be going on? Thanks,
Sometimes they show your labels, sometimes they show "Local Disk" - My system does this too. Right now, they are all showing "Local Disk".
In every other place that matters, like in Sharing, the right names will show up. I've tried for the last 3 years to get them to show my labels, it did this in Windows 7 too. I eventually gave up. You can try "SFC /Scannow" and see if it helps.
When I am looking at the drives in my other workstations, they are all named with the Label. So I figure the labels are still there, just not being shown in Explorer.
If anyone knows a permanent solution for this, I'd like to know too.
Ok When I click in my computer it runs Installshield for Quark Express 5.0

If I go to the music library, then Sample Music, which has 3 sample files, it also has a folder named local disk.
Its empty, but right clicking and viewing properties shows it has 3 files and 4 folders, and is 400 bytes in size. It was created during the OSs install date, and is shared.
What is the purpose of this folder? I have hidden files to be showed enabled.
That folder does not belong there. It must have gootten in there with an erroneous manipulation.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/347639-local-disk-folder-music-library.html
Alright I have a whole bunch of my music and videos on my external hard drive and I got a new Dell XPS yesterday I had been using my external hard drive just fine for the past - yeas now with different laptops working fine I plugged it yesterday to transfer all my music to my new computer and it seemed to be working fine There was an error as the copy rate External Local -- won't open Disk as only working, shows drive hard stopped up slowwed so I decided to delete and try again I did that about times and then decided to just copy the music album by album Eventually I don External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open t know how it ended up happening instead of the Hard Drive coming up as Seagate on the My Computer Tab it started showing up as Local Disk J on my Dell and Local Disk E on my laptop now It doesn t matter where I plug it in Not only that it won t open when I try to open it It will get loaded and then just pause and stop responding I m completely lost My hard drive is Seagate GB nbsp
Hi, first I would run the Seagate diagnostics to check the hard drive is still healthy following this guide.
Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.
If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.
Seagate, Maxtor & Quantum:http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads
Toshiba Fujitsu: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic
If you have a Toshiba hard drive I would suggest the use of the diagnostics from the Seagate link as this will work on all makes of drive and on any OS.Click to expand...
It sounds likely that the circuitry in the drive enclosure is failing (or the drive), if the test won't run then remove the drive from the enclosure and purchase a USB Hard Drive adapter, or use the internal connections in a desktop PC to connect the drive. This should allow you to run the test and/or extract all the files.
If the test runs ok with the drive connected to another PC internally, or with a USB adapter then you will know for sure that it is the enclosure that has failed.
Hello I hope you can help you have before and that was great I files .exe and appearing folder RECYCLER folder! 2gb Volume keep in of System Info have had no problems since you last helped me but I ran a Spyware Doctor scan and found around exe files that were obviously some kind of trojan I tracked them down and found them in the System Volume 2gb of .exe files keep appearing in System Volume Info folder and RECYCLER folder! I recently purchased a 32 GB San Disk Flash Drive. The security files pre-installed on the drive were junk, and I could not delete them so I formatted the drive to remove them. This cleaned the disk, and it holds data, but I'm not sure if this is part of my problem. I am trying to load my copy of windows 7 onto this disk, and using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool, I can select my ISO file, but when I go to select my USB drive, my computer does not recognize the flash drive as a flash drive. Is there a way to change the Flash Drive so Windows will recognize my Flash Drive as removable media? Smaller USB drives still work on my computer, so its not the computer. Anyone have any suggestions?
Hello masonta. Welcome to the forum.
Let's start with this: can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management window, expanded so we can read everything, with the USB stick installed?
You also might check in Device Manager to see if the stick shows up as a USB device, or a hard disk.

I am using Windows 2000 Advanced Server as a workstation (don't ask). For some reason, all of a sudden whenever I right click on a local drive in My Computer and click Properties, nothing happens. Drives on my Novell 5 server will display Properties and all the other options on the right click menu work (I have not tried Format for obvious reasons). I see nothing in the Computer Management screen that gives any indication why this is happening.
I also noticed that Adobe Photoshop 6 suddenly will not save to the network, I have to save to a local drive and then copy to the network. Very wierd. Anyone have any ideas how to start searching for a reason for this nonsence?? Thanks!
This account keeps on appearing on my New PC fresh out of the box. It is linked to a Norton program i removed.
Still have Norton remains on my PC and it is really starting to tick me off.
I have tried deleting the Norton registry but it wont delete. I have even tried deleting the dat file of the 'baqhkcmvc local account' linked to ' %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Norton Internet Security\Engine\126.96.36.199\ccSvcHst.exe' but it still remains.
What the blue blazes is going on? With Vista and Win7 when i removed the bloat wear they never created accounts!
Help please chaps.
Hello Rosebud, and welcome to Eight Forums.
If you have not already, you might see if using the Norton Removal Tool may help to clean up any remaining remnants. Afterwards, see if the baqhkcmvc account is still there or if you may be able to permanently delete it.
Hope this helps for now,
I have recently installed a secondary hard disk into my HP Pavilion DV laptop running Windows Vista Everything works correctly with that drive and the primary C drive This isn t the problem but might be related Continued I have noticed that when I insert a removable media flash disk into the Local Random Appearing! Disks computer a quot Local Disk quot appears in addition to the quot Removable Disk quot which contains the flash drive contents I have confirmed that the flash drive does not have a secondary partition by using it in another computer -- It only displays the one drive on any computer I ve used it on The Local Disk entry contains the next letter assigned by Windows The disk is bytes and does not appear in Device Manager or in Computer Management Disk Management It cannot be opened or removed I am afraid to quot format quot the drive since doing so may cause damage to other disks if the problem is linked to them When removing the removable media another Local Disk entry appears taking the next logical letter after the previous Local Disk There are now two Local Disk s appearing This pattern occurs every time a removable disk is added to the computer Eventually Random Local Disks Appearing! the computer becomes overwhelmed once the Local Disks hit the letter Z and new removable media will not be auto Random Local Disks Appearing! assigned a drive letter The cache of drive letters can be cleared by deleting Volume CLSID entries in the registry from HKLM SYSTEM MountedDevices and restarting the computer I am looking to stop removable media from causing this flood of Local Disks from appearing in My Computer Help nbsphttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/random-local-disks-appearing.937709/
Im new to this forum, i have tried searching this problem but not been able to solve it. I am running windows 8 on a Lenova pro 2 yoga laptop. I connect to my internet via wifi but i have noticed the past 6 months in my 'network and sharing centre' i can see my wifi as private network but there is also a section below that says unidentified network as public network which has lots of local area connections. (screenshot attached)
I have gone into 'change adapter settings' but after restarting my laptop, they appear up again. (screenshot attached)
I don't know how or why it's happening, any help would be appreciated.

First, if at all unsure backup
Parigon disk suite (free trial)
I am just wondering as to whether you can alter the write protection in a USB drive.
Do you have to scan the folder - check for errors like in my 500GB Seagate USB external disk drive?
I am just enquirying as Seagate are saying that I must have used it with a Mac which I have not.
I just wish to put some other data on the disk and able to transfer to another computer.
Go into the properties of the drive and make sure all permissions are checked, you should be able to do anything you want with the drive. Is it brand new, did the problem just start ?http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/276124-write-protected-folder-usb-disk-drive.html
My internet connection is working fine. I have the checkbox for don't display whether connection is connected or having problems. But something weird is going on. After I come back to the computer after a while, there are multiple local area connection icons in the systray indicating that there is a cable unplugged. But my internet is working and I can't find any other local connections in network places. The other weird thing happening with those little icons in the systray is that when I try to hover over them with the mouse to right click on them to see where they are coming from, they vanish as soon as I hover over them. There will be a row from 2 - 6 of them, they al vanish as I hover across the lot of them.
What is going on?
It sounds like either your adapter is telling windows that it doesn't have a cable plugged in from time to time but then re-establishes a connection or there actually is a problem with the connection contacts such that it wiggles just enough to disconnect and reconnect. The multiple instances are just the residual tray cache displays that are refreshed when you pass the cursor over that area so they then disappear because they're no longer there.
First thing I would do is inspect the connections for any slight damage, then consider changing to a difference Cat 5/6 cable, then consider the network adapter itself.
I have this idea however I don't know if you can do it. What i want to do is to make my Hard Disk Drive as my My Music folder: Whenever you click or go into My Music, it will act as a shortcut and head straight to the Hard Disk Drive. The reason for this is so I have a Hard Disk Drive full of music while my original HDD has all the other stuff. Also My Music is a special windows folder so I would like to keep that if possible when doing this. I hope anyone can answer this question. Thank you.
I just reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 on my brother's computer. He's used to having one or two "network drives" that actually are just mapped to local folders on his computer. Since reinstalling the OS, he's not able to map a network drive to a local folder. Does anyone know how we can get shortcuts to individual folders to show up in My Computer as drive letters?
This really isn't as small of a thing as it sounds like. This functionality is very important for the work my brother does. He doesn't actually *require* it, but it will save him a lot of time.
Thanks for any ideas,
So I have a 64GB USB Flash Drive (Centon DataStick Sport). I had not used the drive in several months until the other day when I plugged it into my computer and it asked me to reformat it. I don't know why it asked me to reformat it, but it might have been due to water damage (I had carried it in my backpack and water may have hit it. I'm not quite sure).
I reformatted the drive using NTFS file system and everything is fine aside from one thing; when I plug it in, it shows up as a "Local Drive" under "Hard Drives" like my WD 1TB drive does. I would think that it should show up under 'Devices with removable storage" but it does not.
Does anyone know why this is?
Hi SlashEmUp Welcome to Seven Forums .. Right click on the Usb Drive propertys/hardware uninstall the Driver . Then unplug the Flash Drive .. Re-Install .. See if that workshttp://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/299143-usb-flash-drive-showing-up-local-disk-windows-7-a.html
Hey all I recently upgraded from Windows to Windows and I'm loving it EXCEPT for this one problem I'm "Local Hard Disk" External inaccessible, Drive becomes having Immediately after I upgraded my external hard drive WD Ext HDD TB was missing from quot External Hard Drive inaccessible, becomes "Local Disk" My Computer quot I never had any problems with this HDD before I upgraded and the file-system is NTFS The external drive is visible in Disk Management however there is no letter assigned Right clicking on the drive's partitions in Disk Management shows every option grayed out except for quot Delete Volume quot Upon seeing this I attempted to use diskpart to assign a new letter however in diskpart the partition type is listed as quot unknown quot and when I attempt to assign a letter diskpart says quot there is no volume specified quot Listing volumes in diskpart only seems to list the volumes on my internal drive not the external one After reading some articles on similar problems I tried using the program quot MiniTool Partition Wizard quot to assign a new drive letter and it seemed to work The drive showed up in quot My Computer quot with the correct name and letter with all my data intact In Disk Management all the drive options were still grayed out but because I could access my drive I figured the problem was solved However after a short amount of time the drive became inaccessible In quot My Computer quot the drive's name changed from quot cmluepke tb external F quot to quot Local Disk F quot Clicking on quot Local Disk quot results in an error message At this point in time I can use quot MiniTool Partition Wizard quot to assign a new letter but after a variable amount of time - minutes the drive will become unavailable again Other things I have tried in order to solve this problem used many different USB ports plugged the external HDD's power cord directly into the wall rather than into power cord uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the HDD and for USB Mass Storage Device in Device Manager checked bios couldn't find options pertaining to the external drive ran chkdsk I have read into similar cases and heard that quot Delete Volume quot should fix the problem however I don't currently have a way to back up this much data I simply don't have space for tb of stuff anywhere else If that is really the only way to fix it I understand I just figured I'd check and make sure there wasn't anything else I could try before I delete and reformat Anyway sorry for the long post Let me know if you need any more information or if you have any ideas of things I could try
I had this exact same problem with a 16GB Toshiba thumb-drive a few days ago.
I'd been having heat-related shutdowns, and believe this to be what caused the issue in the first place.
Deleting the volume, then re-creating it allowed me to format and assign a drive-letter.
But yes, I did lose the (non-critical - a recorded TV show) data.
I'm not aware of any other 'fixes'.
I was wondering after all the normal cleaning and maintenance how do I fix my problem when I get an error on my photo program that says not enough disk space on hard drive containing your system folder, need to free up more space. I have a new computor that has
dual core processor
4GB RAM memory
871 GB of free space
I Have oen pcture open that I am trying to print as a bussiness card that I want to print in a multiple print on a page of 10 and it won't allow me to print. Can someone please help me.
You have 871 gb of free space yet it is saying that you have no free space? I doubt that is true, can you show me a screenshot of Computer to see the 'free space' on your drives.
Hi I am not sure whether I should be posting this in the Windows forum or the PC Hardware because it involves both I have an external GB Transcend Drive with a lot of important data Recently I unplugged it from my PC and took to another to get some files One the other machine Vista it didn't show up as far as I can remember thought that was strange so i brought it back to my Laptop Win Dual Boot Disk" doesn't Hard Win "Local and In in / 7 as Drive External work Works Ubuntu Shows with Ubuntu and it only showed as Local Disk I have tried to find useful information on the net but some is very vague and some is outright stupid and irrelevant The fact is that the HDD is not broken When in Ubuntu I can view the contents fine and everything is there no freeze ups or anything but External Hard Drive Works In Ubuntu / Shows as "Local Disk" in Win 7 and doesn't work in windows the drive shows up as External Hard Drive Works In Ubuntu / Shows as "Local Disk" in Win 7 and doesn't work Local Disk I don't think it is a drive letter conflict The Device shows up fine in the Device Manager I'm sure some of you have solved this problem as it seems many on the Internet have If so please tell me in a few steps how you resolved it I am External Hard Drive Works In Ubuntu / Shows as "Local Disk" in Win 7 and doesn't work not formatting as I do not deem this necessary since I can access my data fine in Ubuntu Kind Regards
I suggest that while in Ubuntu you move the files to local HDD, then reformat external HDD, then copy the files back.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/external-hard-drive-works-in-ubuntu-shows-as-local-disk-in-win-7-and-doesnt-work-500728.html

Hello thistle2 and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can hide malware from us when we are performing a fix, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:Please click on Start, then Run, and type msconfig and then press Enter. When the window opens you should be on the General tab. Click on the Normal Startup item. Then press ok until you are out of the program. It will ask you to reboot so reboot normally. Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it here as a reply. I will review it when it comes in.OThttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/19879/local-c-folder-and-system-32-folder-open-on-boot-up/
I took my SSD off my tower and took it as external drive during my holidays.
I had to access my own files from another Windows 10 machine.
When browsing to my user folder, I was asked to take ownership of the folder to access files (so easy!). I knew it was risky but I had to access those files.
Back to my tower, I could log on but many things weren't OK : no wallpaper, no search, Firefox and Thunderbird would not load profiles...
I could take ownership back browsing APPDATA and other subfolders but many problems still remains.
I suppose it should be as simple taking ownership back as it was answering "YES" on the other machine but how?

Moving some docs from old pc to new win10 via stick. I wanted those files in the local doc folder not MSOne Drive.
I just assumed that "documents" under THIS PC was my local documents. But it points to one drive. When I tired to reset it to default. See attach pictures.
While I tried to reset it, multiple "copies" of "documents" showed for a little while. See Pic
I was checking the folders and files on my harddrive and noticed a folder with a 7 character name i didn't recognise. The folder showed empty so I tried deleting it but it just re-appeared but with a different 7 character name. I can rename the folder but it makes no difference even if I change the name length. Is this a virus? Please help. Thank you.
What folder? Where? It may be associated with a program you have perhaps.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/335347-re-appearing-folder.html

One thing I am not sure about but DID notice... what is "SureThingShared" that is found almost at the end of the HiJack This log file?
Whenever i use Media Player for music, movies, or anything, a folder labeled "Music" appears on my desktop completely empty.
I think it has been going on for a few months now
It happens a few seconds after opening WMP and if i delete it right away it wont reappear until i open WMP again or open another file.
If anyone has any explanation, besides Format C: (Im getting tired of those), i would appreciate them
Not sure which version of windows you are using, but usually with XP, I believe it will always create a folder called My Music, when you run WMP if there is not one present, but it is usually found under "My Documents".
I know this happens with Windows Movie Maker, where it creates "My Videos" when I run it.
Hi there, my laptop operates windows vista. In the last few days the system32 folder keeps opening on my screen. During a classroom session yesterday where I used my laptop for a power point presentation, the system32 folder regularly popped up on the projector screen - a real pain. Today, it keeps doing the same or remains orange in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, where all open programmes are shown, until I right click to close it. I think this is happening every quarter an hour or so. I'm concerned I might have a virus but McAfee shows nothing and I downloaded and ran DrWeb Cureit, which showed I had no viruses.
A mysterious WAV Folder keeps appearing on my desktop as I websurf.
A few weeks ago I created a WAV Folder, then put some computer .wav files in it, then cut and pasted it into my Media Folder. Now every few minutes a new WAV Folder appears on my desktop which is empty. I can delete it, but it comes back a few minutes later.
What is creating it? And how do I stop it?
As soon as you delete the folder try emptying the recycle bin and see if it comes back.
Hi yesterday I downloaded a freeware DVD burner folder in ytd.exe temp keeps appearing top rated on PC magazine and when I downloaded and ran the installer norton immediately blocked a supposed trojan so I stopped the installer at the first window deleted it and went on with my day Later I noticed that my homepage for all ytd.exe keeps appearing in temp folder my browsers had been hijacked by bing No matter what I did it kept coming back up Eventually I found a program that was recently installed I don't remember the name but it was generic so I uninstalled it reset some of my settings and everything was good until I noticed norton block another trojan At that moment a window popped up saying that windows could not find ytd exe in my temp install random numbers directory I then went through and cleared my non essential temp files but the ytd exe was blocked by norton in another install directory with different numbers After a while I had a few of these directories in my temp folder and they continue to appear at a random time Norton always automatically quarantines the ytd exe and says the threat is either a trojan or quot goobzo quot After scanning my processes installed programs and program files x folder I decided to try and use system restore However after loading up system restore I found that I didn't have any restore points This I found very odd since they are created automatically and kept for a good bit and I had just that day installed a game from steam which should have caused the system to create a restore point I'm worried that I might have a malicious program that is attempting to download and install more malware secretly by running these ytd exe files in my temp directory and that it deleted all of my restore points in order to keep me from getting rid of it easily I've run a scan with norton that turned up nothing but I keep getting blocked trojans and errors saying that windows can't find these blocked files I'm at a loss on how to attempt to track down and eliminate this virus so if anyone can help me I'd be extremely grateful Also if it helps I'm running Windows home premium bit with the latest updates

I have to admit I have not seen this happen before, but there has to be a reason this is happening.
I am a bit confused though, are you deleting this folder and sending it to the recycle bin?
Are you also emptying the recycle bin once the folder has been moved to it?
When this folder appears on your desktop, does it still contain the music files you originally had in it?

Hi Guys, The system 32 folder keeps appearing when I log on, I have tried the link below to fix it, but there is no funny or wrong entry in the regedit, can someone help!
Just purchased a brand new Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 a few days ago. Just yesterday I noticed that eveytime I startup and logon, (My computer) folder keeps showing up... tried everything possible, (msconfig), diagnostics, tried all scans available including MSE Full scan & MalwareBytes. No Luck!
all scans came up normal, no viral infections or malware... + tried all the registry editing available...
the only scenario that this stops occurring is by running in safe mode!
Core i5 3210M
Intel HD 4000 + nVidia GT630M
6GB DDR3 1600Mhz
Goto C:\Users\<yourname>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
for some reason the personal folder and some times other folder go blank. has any one else notice this.
Try right-clicking on the taskbar, and clicking Properties, and go to the Start Menu tab. Hit Customize, and Do Not Show personal folder. Close all windows, and then re-enable it.
every time i start my pc there is a "new folder (4)" appearing on desktop. please help how to get rid of this, i have scanned whole system for virus already but have a negative result, i also checked for startup programs and didnt found anything werid.
Hi and welcome to SevenForums
See the links above my signature on how to take and upload screen shots here = show us the folder you get,
Also what have you scanned with ?
Review Jacee?s instructions to run Adwcleaner here post #7,
Ignore the title of the thread,
Instant Savings App
On the BleepingComputer site use the button that looks like this,
You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
See this tutorial on how to download and run Malwarebytes,
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free
Also use the Custom scan option not the Threat scan,
Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware Detection & Removal Software

I have a problem with the Search function in XP SP1. When you switch on the Advanced Options, the folder name should appear in the "Look in' field.
I have two identical PCs, when I right-click and choose 'Search' it should insert the folder name in the Look In field. One PC it works, one the other it doesn't
Has anyone else come across this?
There is a folder that keeps appearing on my desktop. I keep deleting it and it re-appears at random intervals. I am running Windows 7 64 bit and I use IE11. This folder has the following properties:
Size: 770 bytes
Size on disk: 8.00 KB
Contains 2 Files, 0 Folders
Files are read-only
The only visible file
name: Indexed Locations
Type: Saved Search
The file contents seem to be an index of files on my computer some of which are dll and exe files and internet searches and web sites including this one.
I scanned the folder with Avast and it didn't find any threats.
I have looked at the properties for the file and I cannot find what is creating the folder.
I want to know how to get rid of this folder so that it does not reappear
Its just a options which have applied on the system. just try the steps mentioned in the link

I need some help.
One folder keeps re-ppearing on my desktop. I can't delete it.
- When I try to delete it, it says: "Cannot read from the source file or disk"
- When I put one file inside, I can delete it. But later on, it re-appears.
Could anybody help me solve this?..highly annoying.
I'm puzzled now , my HP has 1 Hard Disk with 2 Local Disk inside... I'm currently using Local Disk C:/ , but when I clicked on Local Disk D:/ , It says " Local disk D:/ is not formatted, Do you want to format it? " , Many peoples says that format it will lose all the recovery files, but when I go to "Disk Management" , Local Disk C:/ has 80 Gb while Local Disk D:/ has 60 Gb left...and not in use...should I format or buy a new one?
