Upgrading Computer to Run Starcraft 2

Q: Upgrading Computer to Run Starcraft 2

Hey everyone just like a lot of others out there I am trying to upgrade my computer to run Starcraft The biggest problem is that I have an extremely old computer so I feel as if will be very difficult to upgrade to a suitable computer First off as long as I can run on low system specs I will be happy with that When I did SystemRequirementLabs I came short on RAM and Graphics Card Well here is my computer specs from a site http support gateway com s PC R sp shtml Everything from that site goes with mine to Starcraft 2 Upgrading Computer Run I believe the biggest problem will be the graphics card and I think it is connected to the motherboard so that would mean I need a brand new motherboard instead I think Honestly I have a very broad knowledge on computer specs so when it comes to specifics like these I become lost If anybody could Upgrading Computer to Run Starcraft 2 lead me to good upgrades that would be extremely appreciated I don t want to buy a whole new computer because I will be getting a new laptop for college in months and after that I will not use the desktop anymore Although if somebody can find a very cheap one either by building or just buying that would be fine too But if anything I would love to upgrade for a cheaper price than buy a whole new one So help me if possible I know its a lot but maybe just maybe I can run it nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I just recently purchased starcraft 2 and when I tryed to install it onto one of my two computers. At first glance I thought there was something wrong with the CD, because when I would put it in the DVD drive nothing at all would register. When I try running the DVD drive it says there is no disc. Since my computer is a 2006 PC made to run windows 7 I decided to try the CD on my newer computer. The CD registered fine and had no problems when I started to download it. The problem is that computer is reserved strictly for work purposes and I need it installed on the other.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the CD register on my computer?

I, with the help of some computer gurus, just built a new computer. AMD athlon 64 bit processor and etc.

Everything works on it so far. Steam, AIM, Winamp, AVI's. The works. But whenever I try to install old games, they either work, then crash, or don't work at all.

I've tried installing and reinstalling several times. Each time it just finds a new place to crash. I'm at my wit's end, here.

What could be the issue?

If you need more explanations, go ahead and ask.

I've had my eye on an GeForce GTX 660 2GB for quite some time.I have a standard Dell XPS 8500 right now and I'm planning on upgrading it sometime. Some concerns I have are if I will need modular power for this as well as if my computer will be able to handle this card? It currently has a 460W power supply, but some have told me I will need modular power in order to run this card. I am positive that it won't bottleneck considering I run an I7 processor right now. I could use another computer expert's opinion on if it would be able to work with this card! Thanks!

A:Upgrading my computer

I'm not sure why you were told, you need a modular power supply. Modular is helpful in cable management for cosmetic purposes. Modular is nice but it is not a requirement. I currently have a MSI GTX 660 and my power supply is Corsair CX600V2 600W, which is not modular.

Looking at the specifications for Dell XPS 8500, I don't foresee an issue. The GTX 660 requires a 450W power supply, and your PSU supplies 460W.

By the way, were you the one I replied to on Newegg?

Hello Chips, could it be that the 580 is running out of Vram? What does it have 1.5gb?

Have you been able to monitor the CPU and GPU to see how much of what it's using? That should track down what you need to improve.

If it is running out of Vram then I would recommend a 4GB 670 or 680 depending on how much you want to spend.

could you give more specific information about your system?
cpu-z is a good, free and easy tool to retrieve valuable information from your system

the cpu might be ok but would be good to know if it is a celeron, dual core, hyper threaded, etc
also, what brand and model motherboard is need in order to recommend you any ram upgrade and/or video card..
you should be able to pick up a decent video card for under $100. something like a nvidia gt 240 or better a gt 430.
you should upgrade to 2 gb of ram with decent performance or 4gb if the price is right.

Hi cfitzarl,
welcome back, I only know of you from your great posts in the gallery I have a couple of suggestions for you, if you don't mind coming in under budget. the Gigabyte board is a solid well performing board. the DFI is a personal favorite of mine, its more of a high performance board at a good price. the DFI board also has 2 pcie 2.0 slots if you decide that you want to up your
the HD 4850 will give you good performance up to 1680x1050 resolution with most games on high settings. a notch up from that would be the HD 4870 for good performance at 1920x1080. and yes we have pcie v2.0 now. its not a huge deal yet as no card out to date saturates the bandwidth of pcie 1.0 yet....although Nvidia is coming out with a monster card (the GTX 300) that might challenge that. anyway i own a similar DFI board and 3 of the 4850's and they perform wonderfully. from what needs you described, this seems like it may be a good fit and pairing for your x2 6000, let me know what you think and if I can help.

okay, so I have a Studio XPS 7100. And I would like to upgrade the graphics card (I do not know anything about computers). As far as I know, I would also need to upgrade my power supply. My questions:

What graphics card would I need?
What power supply would I need?
Would I need to upgrade anything else?
How do I know what parts will fit in my computer?

A:I need help upgrading my computer?

You would need to upgrade the power supply to support any of the current addon video cards.

That model uses a standard mid-tower case, so card size shouldn't be a factor for most cards. All you would need is a PCI-E slot on the motherboard and adequate power.

As for card selection, I'd recommend the fastest card that fits your budget.

A:upgrading computer

First you need to make sure if that motherboard of yours will seat something like a 1ghz+ processor. That will make a world of difference in terms of difficulty and cost. It might cost as little as 120-150 dollars for that processor if you shop around, and only require you to pop out that old processor and heatsink. But, if the motherboard doesn't support your new processor, you'll have to buy another motherboard, which will cost you a good 100-150 plus the processor cost. Also, installing a motherboard is a big project if your sorta new, as I suspect you might be. I recently had a bad time with a motherboard (eeeh...we won't reflect on that). However, make sure you get decent cooling for that beast!

A:upgrading computer

I requested this thread be moved to Hardware.

You can't connect 2 computers together for "double the power". It doesn't work that way. eMachines are very low-end computers with puny power supplies and minimal cooling. The only safe options would be memory and hard drive.

If someone is thinking of upgrading an old computer, what things limit a computer? IE, i know computers have limits on how much ram they can handle, what limits a computer in what processor it can handle, memory disk etc.

Ya get a Geforce 7800GS AGP card. It is about the best you can do on AGP. Other than that you need to do a complete overhaul to goto PCI-Express video cards. I just made the jump but the 7800gs did very well on most games @ 1280X1024. It will need a little more power so I would make sure your Power supply can handle it.,1213.html

Hello Tech Guy community!

I have an eMachines W1050 Desktop in fully working condition with all the factory parts in it.
I want to spend no more than 500 dollars.

Is it possible to upgrade this computer with a new motherboard, video card, RAM, and CPU (or anything else) with this amount of money and be able to play most current games between mid-high detail running at at least 30 fps?

I would like this computer to end up with at least an i7 processor and a video card with at least 512mb of dedicated memory good enough to play, for example, Diablo III on max settings using a 1366x768 resolution setting, DDR3 RAM (any amount over 1GB) and a hard drive with a minimum of 250GB.

Thank you for your help!

I currently have

Operating system : Microsoft windows XP professional (5.1, build 2600)
BIOS : Award Medallion v6.0
Processor : Intel Pentium III, ~800MHz
Memory : 256MB RAM
Video card : All-in-wonder 128 pro AGP (from ATI and its memory is 32 MB)
DirectX 9.0
Disk drive : QUANTUM FIREBALL AS20.5
Motherboard : I think its an ASUS mother board

Can I upgrade it to run games like Battlefield 2? I do not want to buy a new computer even though it is from 2001.., I've heard I can buy a new AMD 64 Sempron CPU to make it better and a new motherboard and a new video card and more RAM and maybe another hard drive I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and my budget is around 400$ :unch:

Try to explain something to me because I don't know THAT much about computers, believe it or not this is a 10 years old typing this message. :hotouch:

A:Upgrading an old computer!

I bet if you look around hard enough, want ads, your local (independent) computer store, ebay, you could find a P4 used with a decent video card
and still be able to grab a couple stix of ram with the budget you have.
Sometimes the P3 case will not support a P4 motherboard, so you would need a new case as well. Shop around, lots of people upgrade and sell nice comps all the time. Happy hunting!

I am currently using a laptop running Vista which has 2 gigs of ram in it, and it runs pretty slowly, both due to ram issues and a processor issue.

For Christmas, I bought myself:

and today I bought 2 of:

Which, when I get them into the box, will put me at 5 gigs of RAM, which is overkill I know, but the 2 gig sticks are just way too cheap and my ram at least will be future proofed.

Anyways, is there anything I need to know about the interaction of the ram and the Vista? It's the Home Premium version that comes with the PC.

Also, should I get the computer formatted and up and running, then install the 2 new sticks of ram, or just put them in there and boot with them the very first time?

I'm sorry but none of your NewEgg links made it into your post. They have "..." in the cut/paste. Can you try editing/relinking or describing what the parts are?

It's also difficult to compare ATI and NVIDIA cards directly as they have different features and strengths/weaknesses. Putting these aside:
X800 XT ~ 6800 GT
X850 XT PE ~ 6800 Ultra

I do not believe NewEgg ships to Canada, but you may want to check. The only Canadian hardware source I know of is TigerDirect and they do not have nearly as good prices as NewEgg.

Relevancy 38.7%

ok I have an HP Pavilion desktop that I got last april for my 8th grade graduation. I want to upgrade the CPU but I don't know if the motherboard can handle it. How can I find out? Also, I want to upgrade my computer with more RAM. Right now I have 512MB of DDR RAM. The computer manual says its expandable to 1GB of RAM, can I go higher without damaging anything? My dad's IBM told him not to go higher than 256MB and he's running 384MB with no problems. Thanx in advance.

A:upgrading computer

What HP Pavilion do you own? With Brand Name systems its best to contact the manufacturer to see what will work when it comes to CPU's. Generally these systems don't provide as much upgradeability aas opposed to customed built systems.

As for the RAM, this is depenedent on the chipset - chipsets only support a certain amount. You can check at to see what they say for RAM type and amount.

Without upgrading the motherboard you won't be able to add the AMD FX6200 as the socket type is different (the FX6200 is AM3+ whereas your motherboard appears to LGA775), and that motherboard (Dell 0N826N) only supports up to 8GB DDR2 RAM.
You'd also have to find out the wattage of your PSU if you're looking at adding a GPU, from what I can find your machine only has a 250W PSU but I may have that wrong.

I'm soon to be rebuilding my computer: New graphics card, mother board, case, PSU, RAM, almost everything. I've been worried that I may need to do a fresh install of windows 7 (worried since my copy was OEM and I don't even have a disc for it). I've been using Windows 8 CP for the last few weeks, and I was wondering if there was a way to install that on my new machine instead of having to track down another copy of Windows 7? Or will just hooking my current harddrives into my new motherboard result in a painless start-up? (I've replaced computers before but never gone through a mass component-upgrade, so I'm a bit unsure how this works with a new motherboard being installed and everything).

Thanks for any help or advice you can give!

The outgoing Intel CPUs/chipsets/motherboards are looking like the real bargain at the moment, if you don't mind the "dead" socket thing. You can build a kick *** machine for a very tempting price if you shop around, and it will perform everyday computing tasks faster than the AMD equivalent and at least equal it in gaming prowess.

A:Upgrading my computer

Junk the computer.

Thats a waste of $160 (video card & RAM) for a computer that was built slow back in 2004~2005... so those parts would not be usable in a new computer.

$400 for this Compaq AMD would be better spent... too bad its not using the AMD chipset. You could build a better computer for about the same money... but since your nervous you just may want to upgrade the Compaq. You maybe able to sell your OLD PC for about $50 or so to go towards the upgrade/replacement.

There is nothing you can easily / worth-while reuse in a new built/parts.

If you built yourself (rough cost) similar to the Compaq (Windows7 costs the most):
$60 - AMD X2 CPU
$65 - Gigabyte AMD 740 board
$60 - 2GB DDR2 800Mhz ($80~90 for 4GB)
$60 - 450~500w (low-cost PSU - by my standards) or $70 for a 450w quality unit.
$60 - 500GB HD
$30 - DVD-RW drive
$40 - mouse & keyboard (far better quality than what comes with a desktop)
$50 - case (quality) - cheap stuff starts at $15... and looks cheap.
$425 Base parts
$110 Windows 7 Home OEM (OUCH - told ya)
$535 Complete computer

$ 75 ATI 4670 video card PCIe

$610 Total

If you bought the Compaq and upgraded it to the custom build:
$400 + $135 (PSU and same 4670 video card) = $535.
*note: The desktop self-built system has more options and slightly faster CPU)

So thats the choices... look at how much MORE it would cost over just trying to upgrade the OLD computer. Which was about $210.... so for $325~400 extra, you'd get a much faster, modern computer... the HD is much faster, helps.

$210 = improved game graphics, but no upgrade path. CPU/PC will never go faster.
$535 = Upgraded Compaq... limited upgrade (CPU limited)
$610 = Clean hand-build... can easily upgrade to a X3 or X4 core CPU.

My specs are:
AMD Anthlon XP 1600

Also, what processor would you recommend I upgrade to and if another motherboard is needed what would that be.

Thank you,

A:Upgrading my computer

If you go to the manufacturer's site for the motherboard it will have a list of all the supported processors, just find the fastest to maximise your systems performance.

If it is an older motherboard you may find the maximum increase in performance that you can achieve replacing the processor simply won't be worth the money.

There are a huge number of motherboards to choose from, what you need to decide first is what you are going to use the system for, if it is going to be for gaming then you will be looking for a fairly high performance mobo and CPU. You should carefully check that any new board will be compatible with your existing memory or you will also need to replace that. Likewise with the power supply. Then if you will be gaming you will also need a good graphics card.

If the PC will just be for general everyday use then you should find a package available from most good suppliers that will include a mobo, memory and CPU. Then you just need to check your power supply.

Things to watch out for. If you stick with the old power supply make sure the connectors are compatible with any new mobo. Another problem that can occur with a new mobo is the front panel connectors may need to be altered.

Any more questions, please ask. It will help if you can provide the make and model of your existing power supply and motherboard.

all the specs of the comp are in that link above. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Upgrading Computer. Need help.

He should be able to run it but he might have to upgrade his power supply. I believe the 8800GTS requires a 400W or greater power supply with at least 26 amps on the +12V rail(s).

I couldn't find any power supply info on Packard Bell's site. Open the case and see if you can read the sticker on the side of the power supply. If you can't see it, it might be on the top of the power supply in which case you'll have to remove the PSU to read the sticker.

A:Help With Upgrading My Computer!!!!!

Hi and welcome to TSG.

That new set of kit should definately give you a performance increase over your current setup, however there are things that you must look at / consider.

1) Exactly what make and model power supply are you going to use? Your current one may not be up to the job.
2) That board only supports DDR2 RAM, it would be better to look for a DDR3 board for future proofing a bit more.
3) Its a MicroATX board, ensure your current case can support it.

My computer is a Dell 3300 i think or a 3000, it has 3 pci slots and i was wondering is there anyway of buying apg or pic-e slots at all?

Because i want a better graphics card than the one ive got???

Tom wells-day

A:Upgrading My Computer

Although it would be nice...there is no way you can make/add in slots. What you have on your Motherboard is what you got.

WHat graphics card are you currently using?

Couple of years ago, I spent a lof money and bought a Dell Precision 530. Base system w/ 2ghz Xeon (dual capable), 512 mb ram, nvidia quadro4 128mb graphics card. I've been using this system mostly for cad drafting, 3d modeling/rendering and it just feels very slow at the moment. I'm using Win 2000 pro.

Can you provide suggestions as to how I can upgrade this machine without spending more than $800? Is it worth it or should I try to get rid of it and buy a new system? Thanks.

A:Help in upgrading computer

I would say adding more ram and upgrading your vid card would make a pretty big difference. Especially more ram for the type of work you are doing.

Also if it has been a very long time without a reformat of your hard drive, you might notice a big difference in wiping your drive and re-installing Windows.

Hey guys,

I am planning on upgrading my computer(mainly the GFX card) and i would like some advice from you guys. I am after a gaming machine.

My current computer is:

Mobo: nVIDIA nForce 680i SLI

CPU: QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2400 MHz (9 x 267)

RAM: 8GB DDR2-800

GFX: Nvidia 8800 GTS x 2

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional

I am looking to spend on GFX card however if you feel i should spend on other areas then please let me know.

I have been looking at this GFX card Sapphire HD 5970 OC 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI PCI-E Graphics Card - Ebuyer. (sold out on ebuyer but i have found it here also: )

Will that work with my current set up? Or would i need to upgrade other areas first?

Thanks in advance,

My only concern would be driver compatibility with high-end cards like that...other than that you look good to go...Nice Rig!

My son is upgrading his computer, what is the best manner in which transfer the XP OS to his new hard drive?

A:Upgrading Computer

I'd say...clone the hard drive.

End product is a drive containing everything on old drive...that will be bootable when it replaces the old drive.

I would then take the old drive, delete everything on it...reformat it and use it for additional storage, backups, etc.

well definitely a GPU upgrade for gaming, however with that P-4, the biggest I would go is a gts 250, or a HD 4850. If you want DX 11 a HD 5670.

If they're hooked up to the same router, forwarding the same port on both computers won't work. One will cancel the other out.

It seems like lot of people have this lag problem.
It lags when there is more then 2 players in the game (including me)
I can't see text of other players, I can only see the host typing.
I download map like 2 minutes later after joinning.
And when it counts down to start, there is a extra 5 sec lag or something,
When in game, everyone lags out or is lagging if still in the game.
I don't seem what's the problem..

1 thing I figured out is hosting a game doesn't cause any sorts of lag or problem. it runs fine and smooth. just joining is the problem.

How much do you think Starcraft's gameplay compares to Warcraft 2?Not too much of a difference?(Like a total conversion mod?)

It's nearly identical. SC was based on the WC2 engine, so it's very similar, but the graphics are updated, and probably other things as well.

So I go to Multiplayer in the XP, start a game. Then I go to multiplayer in the ME, and it doesn't see that there is an open game.

What can be happening?

alright so i had found a post here that no one really answered and i cant get ahold of the creator but here is what he said quot Hey I was wondering if anyone could help dsl. lag starcraft on me with my start craft lags issue The problem is when I join starcraft lag on dsl. games my dl sometimes wont start or if it does it takes about minutes to start downloading a map if I need it And if i actually get into a game it lags really bad Its wierd because it makes everyone else lag somehow somtimes to the point where it will disconnect all of them and I will still be in starcraft lag on dsl. game and it will end in either victory or draw but I have not been disconnected yet starcraft lag on dsl. Also the whole time I m in star craft playing i have one green ping the whole time And I believe that its not my computer because it passes the requirements by far Please help quot so my ping is fine in the chat but when i get in a game it lags so i am on a wireless network but i have taken and plugged directly into the modem and it did not fix it im on windows xp the game worked fine when i was on dialup and when i went to my brothers who also has dsl but that was last year i rebuilt my computer since then but i havent gotten the updates for it yet could that be part of it please help aim m aikb and i will be checking here thanks nbsp

A:starcraft lag on dsl.

When you download a map on Starcraft, it is suppose to start downloading from the fastest connection in the room. However, sometimes it will not, and sometimes the fastest connection in the room is a 14.4K dial-up.

Same with the in game lag, it might be caused by someone else or the server rather than you, even though you are being affected by it. One bad apple ruins the bunch.

But if it is a persistent problem, I don't know what could be causing it, and I would recommend re-installing Star Craft and getting the updates you mentioned. Also, try playing another game online and see if you still have latency issues so you can tell if its only StarCraft or if it's your connection.

As far as size goes, you will need to find the form factor your current case will accept. This is a "micro ATX" board.

A:Questions for Upgrading RAM on my Computer

If you want to play the games mentioned at max graphics at reasonable fps you'll propably need: #1: Better CPU. #2: An inch better GFX. Medium settings should be fine.
One thing to mention is that the currently installed 2x512MB RAM most propably isn't PC3200, so buying that kind of RAM won't give you the full benefits, if you don't buy 2x2x1GB kits and replace the current RAM. Of course you can buy just one kit, and dump the old ones, or let them be, propably you should test a little to find out which one gives the better performance. (Propably the old RAM has lower frequency and higher latencies, so both might be better)
Hardly ever RAM will cause the PSU to drop out.
