I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Every time I try and find those Microsoft products, I keep getting prompted to purchase Office, so I decided to just go for Apache Open Office...

but is it possible to get any of those programs for free? I mean, someone I know is NOT computer savy at all, and only knows hows to use Microsoft word, excel, and Power Point.. so any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

A:Word, Power Point, Excel.... questions

You cannot get Microsoft Office programs free (unless sponsored by another business, etc). Only Open Office is free.

You can, however, pay a monthly subscription for Microsoft Office 365 that gives you access to all those Microsoft Office programs on a monthly basis.

Hi,

Recently, I'm having slow file loading while opening ms word files and excel files directly from windows explorer. It takes a minute to load, however it opens immediately if I open .doc files or .xls files directly from their application software. It also take a minute for MS Word and Excel software to shut down.

I have run my antivirus (Symantec) and MBAM but they all show no virus was found. I'm not sure what should I do next, please advice.

Client has SharePoint 2010 project server.
When the user clicks on a Excel file, the file open in the browser and when the user click on "open in Excel" we receive the below message
"To open this workbook, your computer must have a version of Microsoft Excel installed and your Web browser must support opening files directly from Excel in the browser."
Below is the browser version

However when the same is tried/accessed through a browser deployed on a dev machine, it works normally. Below is the version of the IE on the DEV server

What is causing this to happen?
Is there any tool to check the difference between the IE settings on my Desktop and the dev box.

Good morning,

I just did a Clean install of my Windows 10 Home last night after it developed several corrupt files that I couldn't repair. I previously had Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus on my computer but I somehow think that could have something to do with my corrupted files (not letting me utilize Windows Update successfully).

My question: Does the free 'Open Office' program have a program I could utilize to open Power Point Presentations that I had saved on an External Hard Drive? If so, it would keep me from installing Office 2013 again.

When I had Office installed I only used it for the Word Program and to open Power Point programs.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

A:Microsoft Power Point

Sounds most likely that you are trying to open a file that has been compressed in order to send it to you. First, check the 'properties' of the file, if it ends in .zip or .rar, then it needs to be 'uncompressed' first, then Powerpoint can open it.

The 'old' (Office 2003) Powerpoint save type was .ppt, now with Office 2007 & 2010, the 'default' save type is '.pptx', (and several others also).
There is a list of file types that will open in MS Office programs at;

Does anyone know how to fix this?

A:Pasting Excel graphics to Power Point

Hi, Bill.

Have you considered using MS Graph right inside PPT instead?
Consider taking the data from Excel, then Insert-MS Graph in PPT, and paste the data...

I don't know if the resolution will be helped or not. Also, are you sure you're not potentially VIEWING the files in a lesser version? 97 and 2000/2002 don't have the same colors. So, if you picked a purple in 2002 and view it on a 97 machine, it might change its color entirely.

Also, see if the information here helps. It's way over my head:

A:question about microsoft power point

Try downloading Openoffice - http://www.openoffice.org/

It can open MS PPoint presentations, from there I would imagine you should be able to save the images - if you had Microsoft Office installed, 'Save as Web Page' (HTML), would be the way to extract the images easily.

or tell your dad to send them in another, more accessible, format, like a zip archive!

You could go to Control Panel, Default Programs, Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Scroll down to pps and make sure it's assosciated with Microsoft Office Power Point and the current Default is Microsoft Office PowerPoint. If not go to top right and click on Change program and select where power point is installed.

You may also be able to right click on the file and select Open with from the menu.

I try to use Power Point but it won't open. After installing from CD it says:
Setup cannot access the required initialization file C:\Progra~1\micros~1\office\setup\wms\win95\wmsset32.dll. I have even physically copied this file from the installation CD of Office97 into the proper folder and it won't see it for some reason.

A:Getting Power Point to Open

WMSSSET32.DLL is a key component of the Windows Messaging Subsystem (Needed for the advanced MAPI features in office97) Basically it allows you to directly send a document, spreadsheet, or presentation through outlook or exchange32 by clicking File/ Send To/ Mail recipient.

If the error is a 797 error code, Try downloading Eraser97 from
M$KB 176823
and re-installing Office 97

Other suggestions include

turning the DMA off for your CD rom drive,
updating the firmware for your cd rom drive

It would help if you could post any error code following the message

The only way I can get any MS office programs to open is to right click and choose the "open with" option. I check the box to Use as default, but they still won't open the next time.
I tried run > winword /r to reset word, but that didn't help either.
All the icons are the same, a little blue chemistry beaker.
In properties, the type of files say they are, "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc".
How do I get these files to open the normal double click way?

A:Excel and Word files will not open in Excel and Word

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Aside from that if the file types are "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc", that suggests you've installed some other software that has taken over the file associations. In that case, you might consider uninstalling that software; otherwise you'll need to reset the file associations, by right-clicking each Office file-type (docx, xlsx, etc.) and using Open With>Choose default program to re-associate them with the correct Office application.

A:Cannot open a pps file using power point

Welcome rohit111 to the windows 7 forums.

One problem that I see is that the file does contain a bad guy or it was made with another version of Power Point
like PP 2010 which is not directly readable in pp 2007.

If the file does contain a virus/trojan, then your AV is most likely doing it's job.
Most AV's will allow you to scan a particular file for bad guys, read the screen after it has finished scanning
the PP presentation that you can't open.

Hope this helps

I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?

Thanks

Got a problem with Word and Excel 2007.

Both programs open ok (under 2 seconds), so no problems there.

The problem is opening the program by means of opening a document. It takes about 1 minute

Exactly the same thing with both Word and Excel.

Has anyone got a solution? Surely there must be a quick little registry tweak to sort this out?

Hello,

Couple of issues here.... help!

1) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word doc or excel and try to open it by a click (internet explorer) it opens of the window that comes with the computer to "buy" or ... so I have to save on the desk top, open word or excel then open the document through the software.

2) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word or excel document in (Chrome) it opens a little window which ask if I want to open, save or open/save and where to save it. If I press open another window opens and ask if I want to open it now.
How can I just click on the word or excel document from gmail or anywhere and it just open up instead of opening up the program to open within?

Thank you ahead of time!

My desktop pc is a Compaq Presario with Windows 95 and Microsoft Office. Recently it has started taking forever to close down a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet. The program itself closes out in normal speed but its the separate documents that take forever.

I have checked disk space - plenty available. I have done the usual maintenance ie defragmentation, scan disk etc.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

A:Microsoft Office-Word and Excel

If you're using office 97, according to microsoft, one possibility is that outlook is journalizing your other office documents. They say to start outlook and under tools / options / journal clear all the check boxes under 'also record files from' list. They say this can cause files to close slowly even if outlook isn't running.

Tried application manager which states MS Office programs & updates are downloading in the background - also says "done:". Nothing is done because it is not working. I did a restore because I downloaded some updates yesterday (these were KB... updates) and still not working. I have Office 2010. IE 11. Windows 7.

A:Cannot open MS Word or Excel

You could try running MS Office Repair. To do that open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office 2010, Right Click on it & select Change, this will open a couple of Repair options to try.

When you say you did a Restore, did you uninstall Office & then reinstall it.

Do you have any other versions of Office installed?.

In both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, when I do a "File, Open" command, a box comes up showing the contents of the last directory I used. If I then attempt to use the drop down from this box to navigate to a new directory, it takes 65 seconds before the drop down list appears, and then another 30-40 seconds before the drop-down menu responds to my request for a new directory.

I have uninstalled and re-installed Microsoft office, and I have run the "detect and repair" option in the help menu. Nothing seems to fix the problem. I have no idea why this is happening or what Microsoft Office is doing during those 65 seconds to produce the drop down list and during the following 30-40 seconds to navigate to a requested directory in the drop down list.

I do not have this problem with other applications such as Lotus 123.

Any ideas?

This is a question about the search functions within Microsoft Office Word 2007 and Excel 2007. I want to be able to do searches that would yield both "e" and "é" in the results of a single search. Right now all I can do is two separate searches. This may mean setting up a way to ignore accent marks, or a way of defining "e" as "e or é" for the search process. My operating system is Windows Vista. Thanks for your help.

When I try to open Word and Excel Files, Windows ask how I should open them. I have to manually select Word and Excel from the list that shows all the different programs on the computer. Once I manually tell it to open in Word or Excel it does, but it is an inconvience. Also each file does not have a Word or Excel Logo, it is white with a little computer screen in the middle. Each file is saved as ".xls" or ".doc" files. Any help with this would be great! Thanks!

Matt

Also-any idea how to open ".RAR" files?

A:Word/Excel won't open on its own-needs to be done manually.

Slightly dependent on Windows version (which you omit to mention) but:
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to any .xls file, right click it and select "open with"
(you may need to hold shift down when right clicking).
Select "choose program" (even if Excel is in the drop down list) and then choose Excel, make sure the "always use this program" box it ticked.

Then do the same with a .doc file, but this time select Word as above.

That will set your file associations.

.rar is a compressed file, opened by a program called WinRar (not part of Windows or Office, Google would find you a download copy)

A:Word & Excel Have Gotten Slow to Open Lately

Hello. This is a rephrase of the above post I recently made about this problem
since I still have the issue. In this post, I am distinguishing between
opening the *program* on one hand, and opening a *file* created with the
program on the other hand.

I am running Office 2007 for Home & Student under Vista.

- When I open an Office *Program* (like Word) from the Start Menu or the
Quick Start bar, it opens in a fast 1-2 seconds; opening a *File*
from the Office Button is another fast 1-2 seconds.
- However, when I open the same Word *File* from the Desktop, or from the
Recent Items list, or from a folder, it opens in a very slow 7-8 seconds;
the first 5 seconds of which time is 'dead time' before the Word window even
appears.

My recollection is that these files once opened very quickly from the
desktop and the slow down is fairly recent.

Any thoughts on what may be causing this *file* opening slowdown?

Other data:
- I have 2 GB Ram
- Other *files* open from the desktop in 1-2 seconds; the slow behavior is
only with Office generated files [e.g. Windows Movie Maker *file* opens very
quickly]
- I do use indexing, but always have.
- Have tested with and without my avast A/V and no difference.
- I am not on a network.
- One thing that has changed for me lately is the addition of a graphics
tablet; however, Word/Excel is slow even with the USB tablet unplugged.
- I have run Office Diagnostics (someone suggested) but made no difference.
- the Word files are .docx, but have found that .doc is also slow from the
desktop.
- Someone asked if I have the Office Startup Assistant (osa.exe) in place; I
have not been able to find such a file and not sure if it matters anyway.

So, if anyone has further thoughts, would appreciate, thanks!

John

I'm having an issue where I can't open up the older files from years ago on my computer. The Word (Microsoft office 2007), Excel, Powerpoint, and image files that I had on my computer for years will not open up. But anything that I created recently will open up. I can download a powerpoint file and it will open up, but the powerpoints I had from 2012 will not open up. For my word documents, I got the mswrd632.wpc conversion error. I deleted the registry entry for it based on google advice. Word opens up but all the characters are in a weird format. PDF files give me an error message when trying to open it. For images, I can see the preview of the image in my pictures folder but when i click on it, it says no preview available.

A:Old Word, Excel, PDF, and images won't open up

You can download the portable version of LibreOffice. When you download the portable version and double click the exe file you can select a folder on the desktop to install to. Open LibreOffice Writer and select File > Open. Browse to your Work FIles. You can do the same for excel files using LibreOffice Calc. For the PDF files you can download the portable version of PDFXchange Viewer. Unzip to a folder and double click the exe file. Select FIle > Open and browse to your PDF file. If these fail then you files are possibly corrupted.

Hi: Try running the system restore utility and select a restore point to a time before the automatic HP update ran. If you are unfamiliar with how to use this program, please read the info at the link below. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore Then change you HP update program to notify you that there are updates and you choose when to install them rather than it being done automatically. That way you can run them and find out which one is blowing up your system and you can prevent that one from running the next time. Or you can just leave things as they are if they are working OK for you. Paul

A:Exporting Microsoft Word Form Data to Excel

Hi Sasha
If you are wanting to use VBA to copy / move between Word and Excel you will almost certainly need appropriate boxes ticked under references in the VBA editor for Microsoft Excel XX Object Library.
I've no idea whether the Mac version is set up the same and would imagine you would have a bit of work to do to translate VBA written for windows into a mac variant.
What you might do is consider providing some dummy data and files and seeing what we can do to help.

Problem is I run my own business and my son is doing his A levels so we both need word working on here as its a much better computer. My system is Windows XP, both Microsoft and HP have sent me things to try but can't seem to action them.

I've got Excel 2003.
It's been working fine and now all of a sudden when I try to open a file it gives this window that says "Preparing to Install"
Then I get another window that says "Installation Error. File not found."
I don't have my installation disc. What can I do?

HiI downloaded the MS Windows Install Cleanup utility from the support MS site and ran it. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;2903011. Run the MS Windows Install Cleanup utility2. Select the non MS Office 2003 versions and hit remove. This will generate some kind of error message and crash the utility interface, but no harm; once you restart the util the entry for the selected item is gone.3. Repeat until all non MS Office 2003 office versions are gone (I had to do four, two for each older version).4. Reboot and voila! No more annoyance! Hope this helps everyone! or try thisIf, when using a MS Office application, you have the message "Preparing to install ....", just create an empty folder named "XLStart" in the following position: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11".Now restart your excel application and it should work ...Source: http://icrontic.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-12340.htmlHope this helps TKP

A:Microsoft Word and Excel and Windows Explorer Take forver to Load

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. While we are working on your HijackThis log, please: Reply to this thread; do not start another! Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so. Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so! Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix. Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.Thanks.

I have a new pentium 4 computer running xp pro corporate with sp1a and microsoft office xp pro. Everything has been going fine until a couple of days ago when word and excel files opened within a second. Now however word or excel takes 10 seconds to open with the file another 3 seconds. (via my documents)

If I open word or excel via the task bar they both open in a split second and when I open the file it also opens within a split second.

I have closed down my firewall, zone alarm, my anti virus, vet ran a scan with Ad-aware, Spybot and Pestpatrol and cannot fix the problem.

Another strange thing that has happened as well is that if I try and do a system restore it locks up half way thru the process.

I hope someone can help me solve these problems.

I've done extensive searching on Google, but am unable to find a solution to my problem anywhere.

The problem is that when I try to click on a hyperlink in Word and Excel, it fails, saying that "no program is registered to open this file".

This is Office 2010 running on Windows 7. Does anyone here happen to know how to resolve this issue?

Office 2003 on XP.

If I double-click a .doc or .xls file, I get a brief "Preparing to Install" window that goes away in a second or so. The app then opens to an empty screen. If I then click File/Open, I can drill down to my file and open it that way.

Anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Word and Excel won't open files directly

This is a long shot, but you may have to associate the files with the program they were meant for. On eway to do this is to open my computer, not any office program. Find the file (files) you want, right click and choose "Open With" and pick the correct program in the list.

In the future your files should open with the right program without any additional efftort.

Let me know if this works.

Hello,

Great Forum. Wonderful, knowledgeable folks.

Had to re-format HD, and seems to be working now.
But for how much longer, who knows.

On the old setup, I had MS WORD and Excel.
Many existing files of both.

I only have, if I remember right, 2 or 3 downloads allowable/available from the
Student Edition of them that I purchased a while ago.

So, I don't want to use up what is left on my present PC, as I have real doubts about it lasting much longer.

I heard about Open Office, and that it is free, and "completely" compatible with the MS equivalents. True ? Or,... ?

Is this what I want ?
Are there "better" free ones tghat would work very well with my existing WORD and Excel stuff ?
If so, suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

A:Open Office, And MS WORD/EXCEL Questions

Both Open office and Libre Office can open most Word/Excel documents provided they don't use any incompatible features. They will not open any encrypted documents however. It is also possible to save documents in .doc and .docx format though how compatible the .docx format is I am not sure.

There is also Kingsoft which looks like Office 2003 and can read but not write the later Office file types. There are free versions of this.

When I click on the name of Word document in a folder to open it, it hangs and then says "Not responding". (This just started happening.) I have the same problem with files in Excel and html (where I use Firefox).

However, I can open files fine if I go to Word and use File, Open.

For some reason, I can still use a folder to open PowerPoint and Adobe files.

I have Windows XP and use Office 2007.

I regularly scan my computer for viruses (with Norton) and for spyware (with SpySweeper) and haven't found any problems.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

A:Word/Excel documents won't open from folder

Hey Ray,

I had a similar problem which was probably different than yours, but here it is for your info. I couldn't access EXCEL or WORD. I would get a lock up and eventually a "can't open excel' message. The short of it was my NORTON had gotten corrupted and because it was set to scan those documents upon opening, it cause them to halt.

Maybe that tidbit will lead you somewhere. Good luck.
