Preferred Solution: Outlook 2000 question restoring email, FAQ??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

*.pst = mail, contacts, calendar, etc.
*.iaf = internet account (something, maybe file)

I have done quite a few office 2000 business addition installations, but this one has me stumped. For some reason even after email addresses have been put in to the TO or CC fields and sent, when starting to retype those same names they are not auto populating. Any ideas?

A:Outlook 2000 email addresses

My first thought is the Outlook.nk2 file. If it doesn't exist, i don't know if it will recreate itself or not. I do know that this is the file where outlook saves the auto complete addresses, and the path to the file should be:

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

But, before messing with that i would look through the outlook email options. In outlook 2003 go to tools, options .... on the preferences tab click "email options", in the email options window click "advanced email options", and then there is the option to "suggest names while completing To, CC and BCC fields" . So you'll want to find the similar option in outlook 2000. if this option is turned off, turning it on may force the creation of the outlook.nk2 file. if not you should be able to create it yourself or copy it from another system or user profile. hope that helps, as i don't have a system running outlook 2000 available to test it on.

Does anyone know if its possible to schedule a email to automatically be sent out at a specific date or time?

A:Outlook 2000 + automatic email

yes it is

when you have the email up - have a look for options
it should be there to delay sending

However, this assumes you are on an exchange server OR your PC is on and connected to the interent at the date/time you want to send

I use MS Outlook 2000 on a Windows XP computer. Just recently my e-mails appear to have gotten stuck in the Outbox. When I look at the messages in the Outbox the messages are bold but not italicized so it doesn't look like it will send. I open the message and click send but nothing happens.

When I check my Sent Items to see if it has actually sent I will see the message duplicated hundreds if not thousands of times. The recipients will receive the message but mostly just once, some have reported getting it three times. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I just did a MS Office update download as well as a Spyware Removal software update but neither seems to have done the trick. Does it sound like I need to create a new PST file and move items over from my old one?

Thanks for your help

Hello all!

I have a small problem and am not sure how to fix it...I have Outlook 2000 on my work computer which is hooked up to a Novell network. We recently changed our exchange server to a different manager and had to archive emails before the switch. I am trying to retrieve my emails and can only find an *.ost file to import back to Outlook. However, I do not know what program to use to read this file. Should I just chalk my email up to being lost, or can I do anything with this *.ost file to find my archived email? Please help if you can - let me know if you need any more information!

Thanks for any input anyone can give!!

KLAW

A:Archived email Outlook 2000

.ost files are your offline folder. Is that how you archived your mail by synching it all to a offline folder? Or did you put it all in a local folder (.pst files)

I installed office 2000 last week on a new computer and every thing was waking fine. in outlook I was able to get all the mail and contacts transferred by creating a pst. backup and importing it to the new computer. A few days later I noticed that I can't send but i'm able to receive email thru Outlook anymore but it works thru IE hotmail or outlook express. What I get is a error 550 spam notice from my ISP.

Next I remove Anti virus software but it didn't help. Also run a few spybot scans and came up clean.

Anybody have a clue ???
Thanks, Stocky

A:Outlook 2000 Email Trouble ?

If this is to be setup to work with Hotmail then Outlook can't be configured to work with this app. You need to use Outlook express.

When email sent, it goes to Send box, Outlook registers delivery complete, then I get a McAfee VirusScan message indicating that email could not be sent , 530.5.7.0 Authentification required. It indicates to contact online help for email program for more info on the error, or email provider if problem persists.

Has been going on all week. I run a second computer on the same line, same email account, using Outlook 2007, and its working fine. Suggests it isnt an issue with my provider.

Any ideas? Is this an outlook problem, a McAfee problem, a worm or virus? And most importantly, how do I fix it?

A:Outlook 2000 email not sending

If you're getting a McAfee message, I'd be inclined to think that it's a McAfee issue. The "Authentication" required may be a setting you need to change in McAfee.

For no reason I can think of, when I open an email in the inbox folder in outlook 2000 and then close it, it disappears. It is not in the deleted items folder, spam folder or any other. This started a couple days ago. I did not change any setting I know of. This only happens in the Inbox folder. I can not locate any settings that would cause this.

Outlook is configured for workgroups although I am the sole user of the computer.
The OS is XP Home edition.

Hi... It sounds like you have a VIEW filter set in Outlook 2000.

In Outlook, go to VIEW and click on MESSAGES. It sounds like you have it set for UNREAD MESSAGES, which will hide all your messages except for the ones that you have not read!

Have fun and I hope this helps!

I use Outlook 2000 for email. I click the button to send a new message, then click the "To" button to address it, and a box called "Select Names" pops up. There is a drop down menu listing all of my contact lists from which I can choose a person to send a message to. What I want to do is change the order of the contact lists in this drop down menu, so I can put the list I use most in the first position instead of having to always choose it from the drop down menu. Anyone know how to do this?

check in file, page setup, define print styles. depending on which style you are using (either table or memo) go to edit and then switch to the "paper" tab. see what is chosen there... you can also reset to defaults from there if infact your settings are off... i don't know if you already tried this but if not it's worth a shot.

I have Outlook 2000 SR-1, and use Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2 (to the extent it is relevant). When I go to address an email by scrolling down the list of contacts that show up by clicking on the email "to" button, only some of my contacts come through, despite the fact that all of my contacts contain email addresses. I have checked the Microsoft website, and their fix on this (OL 2000 (CW)/Q197907) for Outlook 2000 is limited to Outlook installed with the "corporate or workgroup" option, which mine is not. I was unable to find any additional help for this version of Outlook and would greatly appreciate any insights. Thank you very much.

A:Outlook 2000 SR-1: Problem with Contacts in Email

Hi lawyermom
Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Do you have more than one Contacts folder in Outlook?

Open the Address Book in Outlook, are there folders or groups listed under Contacts?
If so, look in each to see if the missing Contacts appear.
If Contacts appear in other folders, you can Copy them to the main folder.

When using the To: button, you can also click the drop down arrow and switch to the other folders (if they exist) to select those Contacts.

Let us know what you find.

Any way to configure my searching to be more precise in sent or received emails? Outlook 2000 won't let me set the date range I want to search nor let me select the fields I want to search. When I go to advanced find in my email I seem to be stuck with searching "subject field" or "subject field and message body" or "frequently used text fields". Same with dates-only a few date range choices are allowed. What a waste of search time when I only want to search for the word "popcorn" used in one message body last Halloween week. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

A:Advanced Find in email for Outlook 2000

If you're just looking for the word "popcorn" in the body of the e-mail. Outlook can do that.
Click Find on the toolbar, then under Options click Advanced Find.
On the Message tab sheet, type popcorn in "Search for word(s):"
For the "In" drop down menu box, change it to "subject field and message body", then click on Find Now.

Outlook can also search in date range. Let me know if you still can't find the word popcorn.

Hi,

The read receipts appear to come randomly. sometimes once, sometimes twice or thrice in a day. Its the same read reciept evrytime.

I have not been able to find out the root cause or a resolution to this.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

A:Repeated Read receipts for an old email in Outlook 2000

Hi satish.kallem
Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Is the user using an .ost file or a .pst file?
If it is a .pst file, create a second .pst file and make it the Default Delivery Location.
Close and restart Outlook 2000 for the changes to take effect.

Then Right click and Close the original .pst file.
Close and restart Outlook 2000. Does the repeated read receipt stop?

If so, reconnect the original .pst file to Outlook 2000:
File > Open > Personal Folders File (.pst)
Browse to the location of the .pst file and select it.
The original Personal Folders should then appear in Outlook 2000.

Change the Default Delivery Location back to the original .pst file, if desired.
Close and restart Outlook 2000 for the changes to take effect.
Let us know if that works for you or not.

A:Outlook 2000 Question.....Please Help

They are *backwards* or they are *alphabetical*?

In my experience the "TO" button generates names in alphabetical order. There are two ways around that:

1- instead of using the "TO" button to select recipients, list their names in the 'to' section of the email (it will recognize the names and auto-fill the email addresses). The names will list in the order you enter them.

2- once you select recipients using the "TO" button, return to the email and right click on recipients, cut, and paste the names into the order you want.

I'm trying to think of a reason one would need to do this... hierarchy?

A:Display email address in outlook 2000 instead of just names when sending

Unless you're using your company's global address list, you must have saved the e-mail addresses yourself (either in your personal address book or in Contacts).

If so, the name is just a short identifier for that e-mail address. You can change the names to include the e-mail address by editing it the name:

In Contacts, right-click the contact, click Open.
Change the Full Name line to read:

Contact Name: E-mail address
e.g. John Smith: [email protected]
In the File As line, make sure it says the same as above.
Click Save and Close.

Alternatively, use:
File, Address Book, double-click the addressee, click the Name tab.
Add the e-mail address to the end of the surname and make sure it appears the same in the Display line.

If you're using a global address list, I'm not sure how you'd change it, maybe someone else can jump in and help you?

I'm hoping that someone can help me with changing the default internet email account in MS Outlook 2000 Corporate/Workgroup. In the regular Outlook 2000, there is a button in the service box for set as default. However, this does not exist in my program. I am running two internet email accounts, and I would like the second one that I installed to be the default for sending messages. I know there must be a way to do this, but I just can't remember/ figure it out. Thanks!

Best,
Jeremy

Bob C, or anyone... I'd appreciate your help.

I had to uninstall Ofice 2003 and put 2000 on the machine instead.

I backed up a PST from Outlook 2003 basic edition in the format compatible with Outlook 97-2000.

I installed Office 2000 and set up Outlook 2000.

When I attempt to import the PST into "Outlook Today" "Personal Folders" folder, an error message comes up as follows:

"The source and destination folders for this operation cannot be the same"

This happens when I import it from Applications data/Microsoft/Outlook on the local machine.

I had to creat a new profile (long story). For the life of me I cannot remember (maybe 3 hrs of sleep in 2 days is a factor ) how to import my messages & address from a backed up version of Outlook 2000 from a zip to my hard drive. I looked on MSN & as usual could not find an article about how to do this.

Thx for any help! I am too brain dead to do this on my own...LOL

Whenever I move messages from the Inbox to the "Deleted" folder, and empty the "Deleted" folder, and then close out the program, the next time I open Outlook they are all back again in the Deleted items folder and also the messages that were new in the last session are showing as "new" again - even though I've already read them!

What am I doing wrong?

So basically I have outlook 2003 linked to my Gmail. So when I write a new email and hit send this is not secured going to gmail's servers, but once it's there it's secure, but when it gets sent to the destination email it's unsecure again. The only way to secure is all party's must have a security certificate like verisign? Is this correct? So essentially most emails are unsecured during transit over the internet? And if this is the case couldn't some evil doer just intercept emails left and right and try to get any personal info. Or is there more to email security. Like when you register usernames and passwords at a bank or internet forum doesn't that just get sent via email for confirmation unsecured over the internet.

any help would be appreciated thank you

A:outlook 2013 email question

This is going to be very difficult to answer without additional information.

It is not uncommon at all for e-mail clients to download nothing but the message header, but not the message content, until you try to open it.  This saves bandwidth and lets you mark stuff as junk without ever having opened the message or downloaded the message content.

It's also not uncommon, if this is how you have Outlook configured, to get a message if the Outlook client is trying to retrieve the message body from the server and that is delayed for any reason.

If you still have the message and/or can do a screen capture (Alt+Prt Sc) of the message dialog and post it that would be helpful.  I'm willing to bet that the message dialog would not appear again if the content was fetched the last time you touched the e-mail message under discussion.

Sometimes when I open a new email or reply to an email the window will be a different size than the last email I sent. Why do they change sizes? What can I do so that they don't change size unless I manually change it? Thanks!

A:Outlook 2003 Email Window Question

It acts just like IE.
If you click and drag the open window to size by the corners and edges, then use File>Close instead of the X in the upper right hand corner, it should "remember" and stay that way the next time it's opened. From then on, you can go back to the quick close X.
You'll have to do it for each type of window open in outlook. (i.e Send, Receive, Reply, etc).

A:Outlook 2007 email address question.

I am using 2010 so I can't be specific.

You should have an export feature to export to different file formats. Office 2010 will do it in an excel format.

You also should be able to import the list you have created and make a distribution list of it. They are now called "Contact Groups" in 2010.

In various places it says to close down Outlook 2013 prior to restoring from a .pst. To simply copy and paste the .pst file into the proper location which is often listed as an email address.

Why is this, and does restoring in this way really apply when restoring Outlook 2013 from earlier versions of Outlook?

I recently imported a .pst file from Outlook 2000 into 2013 (all emails/contacts) and to my amazement, the source 398 MB .pst ballooned to over 1 GB.

Does importing the .pst ( as opposed to copying and pasting while Outlook 2013 is closed) cause such great multiplications in file size of the .pst?

A:Outlook 2013 - restoring from .pst & closing Outlook

It is always good to use the Import option if you want to Import the .pst files from a very older version of Outlook. Outlook 2003 and later versions use a different file format compared to earlier versions of Outlook. That could be the reason why the file size has increased.

chops: I believe the issue is caused when trying to import the files from read-only device.(Your CD) Outlook see the files as Read-only, and assumes that another application has the file open. No. Not possible to my knowledge or without VBA.

I think it might be easier for you to set Access to import from the PST file at a given time each day. Of course, you'll have to have exited Outlook at that time or the PST file will report that it is in use.

I have a question about restoring a computer while it has already virus/spyware,malware infection....is it realy a good solution when you early restore your computer? I just chat with a friend and he said he always do that??

A:question about restoring a computer....

System Restore is the feature that protects your computer by monitoring a core set of system and application files and by creating backups (snapshots saved as restore points) of vital system configurations and files before changes are made. These restore points are stored in the System Volume Information (SVI) folder and can be used to "roll back" the computer to a clean working state in the event of a problem. This makes it possible to undo harmful changes to your system configurations including registry modifications made by software or malware by reverting the operating systems configuration to an earlier date. Keep in mind that System Restore will back up the good as well as malevolent files, so when malware is present on the system it may be included in restore points. If System Restore is working you can always try using it. Sometimes this method of recovery works but other times it may not. Whether it will be successful depends on what type of infection you are dealing with and what is restored (What's Restored when using System Restore and What's Not).Generally its better to leave System Restore alone until the machine is clean and stable. However, in some cases, using System Restore may return some system stability if you are having problems running disinfection tools or booting up. If you are able to successfully use System Restore to return to a previous state there is no guarantee your computer will not still be infected. As such, you should immediately perform scans with your anti-virus and anti-malware tools afterwards.

I have a old Dell that I wish to restore to factory settings but I have one issue before I begin.

The PC game with Windows 7 Home Premium, but I have upgraded the PC in the past to Windows 7 Professional in which I did so via "Add features to Windows 7".

My question is I wish to restore the laptop back to factory settings but wanted to know if there was a way to keep Windows 7 Professional installed.

Would restoring the PC to Home Premium then using the CD Key in "Computer" to upgrade back to Professional work?

Thanks!

A:[SOLVED] Restoring Question

if the original was used to justify the upgrades, then you cannot install it without removing the upgrades. it would violate microsoft license.

is there any way of retrieving outlook data from a hard drive if it's not backed up to a pst file?

A:restoring outlook data

Not sure what you are asking about. Recent versions of MS-Outlook for Windows use .PST files for storing a user's Outlook content. I believe that they contain just about everything except e-mail account settings (which are buried in the Windows Registry). If you create a backup within Outlook the file is typically named ARCHIVE.PST.

I recently had to install a new hard drive in my old desktop my kids use. My old WinXP was corrupt, so I opted to get a new hard drive and reinstall everything. What I need to know is, how do I pull in all my old emails from the original hard drive? I have the new drive as master and the old drive as slave. As far as I can tell the data is still there, I know some pictures were missing, not really sure why that was, but I have those backed up on another hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

I have a HDD from an XP Pro machine hooked up to my Win7 machine. I can browse it's files as if it were any other storage device. This HDD has issues and I need to reinstall XP Pro on it and I don't want to lose the data. So I ran the back up utility in Win7 and made a full back up of this drive (E: drive).
My question is, when I reinstall XP on the E: drive, I'm going to have to boot into Win7 and run the Restore Wizard, to restore the E: drive files i backed up right? What kind of problems will I run into doing this? I assume I will because I'm on Win7 and I'm trying to restore an XP back up.

You didn't say what software you used to make the System Image, but if you backedup only C:, then when you restore the image, it will only affect C:. What software did you use to make the Image?

A:Question on Restoring OS with clean Re-Install.

If you have the reinstall CD for the operating system, you could just boot to the CD. Then, once it is loaded you will get a screen asking you which partition you would like it reinstalled on. Myself, I usually just delete the recovery partition if I have a reinstall disk, but that's just me. On that same screen where you pick where you want to install Windows XP, you can also delete other partitions if you would like. When doing a fresh install, I always just delete all the partitions, then you will only have one option, which says "Unpartitioned Space" (something like that) and you just select that since it is your only option. Deleting the other partions, you just use the arrow keys, select the one you want to delete, hit 'D', then it will prompt you 'Are you sure' etc, and then you have to hit 'L' on the keyboard.

Then, after this step you are given options to format NTFS, NTFS(quick), and possibly FAT. Obviously choose NTFS, (or quick) and you will be on your way installing Windows XP, fresh install. You most likely will have to load the drivers for a lot of the devices, if you your enternet or wifi drivers you can try and use Windows Update to find those drivers.

Hope this helps, maybe see what someone else recommends too...a lot more smarter people around here then me...

Oh and instead of Firefox, you should try out Chrome

That's the Windows 7 system backup, right? To re-image your partition using that image boot to the System Repair Disc (I guess; I thought there might be a special "rescue" disk needed, but it makes sense that the System Repair Disc can handle that chore).

If you have a Recovery partition but have not yet made your set of Recovery DVDs I suggest that you do that now. Even if you do not intend to ever use it, it's a good safety in case you do need it someday.

Ok,
I have turbobackup and it backs up ALL the files listed in the appropriate folders for outlook info, eg. .pst files, .ost, .pab, .oab and so forth. When I restore those files in the same directory as from where it was backed up from originally(clean install of windows and office 2007), everything like contacts, calendar and even the look of the folders, appear the same. However, the calendar reminders dont work(error message), the accounts even though listed in the side bar, personal folder and any imapi folders like hotmail, are listed however in the account settings there are no accounts listed.

I have done this before and have had no problems with outlook. All the settins xferred ok, and even the rules worked. This time the rules even say in parentheses (on other machine) or something to that effect.

Please help. Am I missing something?

There is a very old thread where Cpt Jack Sparrow came up with a simple solution to my Outlook 2010 problem - I couldn't access it. I had tried everything I could find, but it was only his suggestion re a simple Registry edit that solved it. Many thanks.

However I am now trying to restore my data. After I deleted the Registry profile and created a new one I tried to use my Acronis True Image backup but this does not restore the data even though it appears to be doing so. As you can see from the attached screen capture I have several options for restore. I picked the ones ticked plus used a backup form before the problem. That doesn't restore the data as far as I can see. If I include the Profiles, then the problem I had re-appears.

Irrespective of whether or not this restore issue is fixed, thank you Jack for restoring Outlook!!

A:Restoring Outlook data with Acronis

You can give this a try.
Mount the Acronis Backup Image.
Then use Explorer to copy/paste the data you need restored from the Image file.

Hello, I hope someone can help.

I have just recovered my system from a dismally failed reinstallation of WinXP (BIG mistake to assume this would actually work.). Instead of reinstalling Windows on that original drive I have instead started out with a totally new drive and thus installed a brand new copy of XP onto that, thus the orignal data on the old HDD is OK and remains accessable.

Of course the difficultly with a 'new' installation is getting back to the status of the old system, i.e. any previously opened (i.e. saved) emails and Firefox / IE favourite links, hence questions:

1) How can I transfer the old (archived?) Outlook emails from my old HDD into my new Outlook? They are both Office 2003 based.

2) How can I transfer the old Firefox and IE favourite links onto the new system?

TIA,

Andy

A:Restoring Outlook & FireFox / IE Favourites

If you hook up the old HDD as a slave you should be able to drag and drop the files over that you need.

1. Outlook files are saved as PST or OST files depending on the setup. If it is a POP3 account the are most likely saved as PST if it is exchange it will be an OST. All you should have to do if locate the file which is usually in \Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Then open up outlook and import the data.

2. Favorites are easy. On the old drive go to \Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Favorites copy the files in there to C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Favorites and you will be all set.

I am using Outlook Express with XP. I have created a mail backup folder. Iwant to restore some items to the active folders. I followed the "How to restore Outlook Express items" instructions at Support.microsoft.com/ however when I finished I could not find the items to open. Can someone tell me where to find these items after they are restored?

A:Outlook Express restoring items

Hello waa

I don`t know how you did this restore.

Here is a very good guide on how to restore a backup.
(The article assumes you saved the backup folders on the desktop. You will have to browse to where you actually stored them)

The folders should return to your Inbox where they were originally

Had to clean up my PC, re-format the the HD. Saved all my Outlook files/folders by dragging (burning) to a CD. The entire contents of that back-up are now on my cleaned hard drive and Outlook is re-installed. But it is bare bones. How do I get my former folders/files in my current set-up?

A:Restoring Outlook folders/files

You can either configure Outlook to use the PST file that was backed up, or import it into the current one.

I'm trying to restore to factory default settings that came with my PC from 2011, just to start from scratch again without reformating. Anyways when I choose the date to revert all my settings back it tells me "There is not enough free disk space. The recovery process has failed". I don't completely how I could not have enough space? I have a 2 terabyte system and I have 66% free space available. Why do I need free space to restore my system to begin with if It's just going to end up wiping it all after the process is complete? Anyways I hope I explained it well, I still honestly don't fully understand it myself. Thanks for your time.

A:Question about restoring factory defaults that game with my PC.

I've never tried to restore to factory defaults as I build my own PCs, but I'm a bit confused by your wording.

You say you want to restore to "factory defaults".

Then you say you are asked to choose a date.

Offhand, I wouldn't think a restore to "factory defaults" would give you any choice about dates. It would be to a fixed point in time as of when the PC was built and you would have no say at all about "when". There's only ONE "factory default" state--not two to choose from. So I'm unclear about choosing a date.

I assume you are trying to restore via a partition placed on the PC by Dell, that is accessed from a menu.

Am I wrong about that? Walk us through the steps in your method.

What are the choices from which you must choose---what is the wording on those choices? Specific dates, like August 22, 2011 or October 4, 2011?

I am looking to replace my C drive. I'd like to backup and restore my existing documents & settings and my program files. But does the Windows XP Pro backup wizzard even work for PROGRAM files when you "backup all information on this computer", then replace the C drive with a new drive, then restore all of the backed up data onto the new drive? Or do you need to create 1 big image file backup (using a software like Norton Ghost) in order to restore all files (including PROGRAM files)? I always thought that PROGRAM files are the one type of files that can't be copied.

Is it new? Does it still have a warranty? If it still has a warranty, take it back so you don't void the warranty.

I was using the Uninstall or change programs feature in control panel to free up space on my computer and I uninstalled something that was only 25.0 MB and had nothing to do with these other files but for some reason it uninstalled everything in the folder and in all sub folders instead of just that program. So I was wondering if there was anyway to get back the data my computer deleted in that folder. I have vista 64 bit.

Thanks

A:Question on restoring vista using recovery disks

My thoughts are yes it would be.

In my experiences with Recovery/Restore discs, especially if supplied by the PC manufacturer, the first thing they do is format the drive. Some have the option to let you keep your User files but usually thats the most they allow.
