I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After putting it off for a couple weeks, I finally did my Dell system update which was supposedly a Bios update.  Upon restarting, ALL of my files were wiped (except the ones in my recycle bin- go figure!). I have Carbonite so I am restoring everything but it takes a long time and is very frustrating.  I wanted to put this here as a warning to anyone.  How could this have happened and how can I prevent it in the future, besides not doing any updates?

The computer wont start.   After pressing "ON" one can hear a vibration sound, it turns on an orange LED.   Stays black for two  minutes; then screen does light to a dim night-blue color.     This is for a Split x2 13-g110dx (windows 10 64bit). Already tried:  hard reset and going to BIOS (Windows button + "B"). Also tried booting from  a USB drive.   It did not work (see screen below). Any suggestion(s) of how it can still be revived ("do it myself")? Thank you.                                       Screen message

Hello all, this is my first time posting here so please forgive any mistakes/oversights. I've just updated my Samsung laptop's system BIOS via their software update program, and my Nvidia GPU (GT 650m DDR3) no longer seems to work. The Nvidia control panel is still there, and it still gives me the option to select which programs use the GPU, but there is no GPU actitivity showing up. Also,I've tried playing Skyrim (which auto-detects the PC's graphics cards) , and the game no longer seems to detect the Nvidia GPU (just the Intel integrated graphics).

My laptop model is NP550PC7, with 6 gig of ram, and an i7 quad core CPU, and the OS is Window 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I've tried looking in the BIOS but I can't seem to find anything related to the GPU or display options. Any help or avice is much appreciated.

Have you updated your GPU with the latest drivers?

Please navigate to:

Look under "Display Adapters"

Is the Nvidia GPU listed there? If so are there any yellow symbols etc?

A:Bios Updates

You should not be downloading BIOS's from Phoenix even though it's written by them. You need to download the BIOS from the link you provided, Foxconn's support site. I do not know if they have to be flashed in order of version because I see there are different sizes between versions both larger and smaller. What is the BIOS version on your MB? You should see it at either initial boot or in the BIOS settings. Keep in mind that a bad flash can brick the MB.

I just dowloaded (1) bios update onto my dv-7via HP, but am curious about all the other updates on the list that aren't bios.Do I update these as well?

Bios updates are dangerous, if the update fails for any reason at a crtitcal point it will break your laptop and you will have to send it to HP for repair, si my advice is to Never update the bios unless you are trying to fix a critical issue that cannot be solved any other way. The other updates may or may not be newer than what you have installed, you will have to check dates for each, my philosiphy is if my system is stable and has no issues I dont update drivers or bios.

I've been looking for a list telling the new stuff they have and what they've fixed, but I haven't found anything.

I'm just interested to see, what updates is there in the new versions, compared to my current one. So if anyone would know where I can see those, I'd really appreciate that.

If there's a newer version of my BIOS available, should I update? Or is that something I should do only if there's a major system problem of some kind?

Try this utility :

Its like Belarc Advisor / Sisoft Sandra - providing you with full details of your system spec, components, drivers, system temps, and info including info on Bios.

There are hotlinks from withing the programme to the manufacturers websites that should allow you to d/l any updates.

Failing that then perhaps indicate what Mobo you are currently using so someone else with the same can point you in the right direction.

Most people don't know that on just about any board with an ISA slot (granted most newer boards do not have ISA slots) you can still boot even if your bios is trashed if you have an ISA video card, and then reflash it from there.

However, it does not work. After I press the Check for updates button, after a bit it comes back with "Check for updates failed" and the GUI-U15 error in the logs. I tried many times, including after a reboot. Also, the app just disappears (probably crashes silently) when I go to Advanced->system details.
Any ideas? I was excited to spread the word around about it but can't as it doesn't work at all.

How do I update the BIOS on a Linux build of the M3800?  The downloads page only provides an exe file, which doesn't work on Linux.  I also found a page that describes loading the BIOS using a bootable thumb drive, but creating the thumb drive also requires Windows.
The M3800 has been very unstable, and I'm hoping a BIOS update will help.

A:BIOS Updates on Linux (M3800)

Hello!  So from everything I could quickly find on the Precision M3800, it came with Windows installed and is not "officially" supported with Linux as such there will not be any way to update the  BIOS without re-installing Windows to do so.  If you have access to a Windows installed computer, you could take the exe file or BIOS file and make a bootable flash drive.
I am not a linux expert by any means, but I have heard of programs like WINE that can emulate windows however since you are updating the BIOS I would highly recommend you use the above two options to update your BIOS less you brick the computer.
Its also possible someone has another idea.

im just curious on if updating your system bios is worth it or what exactly it would do--
i was looking @ a few driver sites that have my manufacturer (phoenix technologies) but there is a huge list and im not sure how to find the one i need---if i need it---

just curious

A:bios updates install/point?

You can upgrade the system BIOS for sure. But first of all you need to download the exact driver depending on the motherboard you've. The exact model or else it could cause a lot of problems for you. Might not be able to access even the HDD at bootup. So need to be very careful when you upgrade the BIOS driver.

Upgrading the BIOS is a good option but it has to be done very very carefully.

There was another thread where the person was having a few problems(a few fatal exceptions, blue screens) he was able to solve it by upgrading his BIOS, audio and may be also video drivers. So BIOS upgrade is OK.

Now this is the most important thing - If everything is working fine then let it be and no need to fix it.

Hope this helps...

A:Control Panel\System and Security\System BIOS Version\Model?

A clean install wipes out any manufacturer installed software that contains your computer information. (The same thing happened when I did a clean install on my Sony Vaio.) Unless you still have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive (or recovery disks) that can return your Acer to original factory specs, I'm not aware of anything that can get that data to show up on the System dialog box. However, there are free 3rd party utilities like Speccy that can provide all the Acer data and then some, like real time monitoring of temperatures, hardware serial numbers, etc.

I've gotten a lot of help from other forums as to exactly where I went wrong. Everything they've told me points to this being possible, and I've managed to corroborate this on my own, but I can't seem to find the right BIOS to make this happen. Can anyone here help?

A:Running into a brick wall with BIOS updates

The BIOS would have to be compatible with your board, if you could tell me what Motherboard you have i will take a look for you.

I built my own computer, used a USB to install windows 7 to it and everything, yet it still functions somewhat poorly. I have seen my fair share of driver update tools (most of them were either viruses or completely untrustworthy, as they asked for your credit card info, naturally). I need someone to point me towards a good tool I can use to update my BIOS, if there is such a thing. Thank you for your time.

A:Need a trustworthy application to check for BIOS updates.

You don't need anything but your browser. Just go to the motherboard manufacturer site and look for the latest drivers/BIOS versions. Any software other than the official ones is inherently unreliable.

BTW, unless you know for a fact that the BIOS is in fact a root cause of problems, it's better to leave it alone. Updating "just because it's the latest" is a sure way to problems.

I came across the fan problem on an older computer the other day and cured it by opening the computer and blowing out the dust accumulation in the finned heatsink between the fan and the CPU, fan didn't have to work so hard providing cooling.

Hi My question is How can I determine if a downloadable application offered by a Web site is indeed safe i e not malware or spam before I actually do download and install the program Here are the gory details I was curious about updates to my computer's BIOS and drivers so I searched Google and turned up a web-site that offers a download that scans your computer to determine the current BIOS and driver versions then provides a checklist showing which are up-to-date and which aren't I ran it and it looks pretty neat http driveragent com It also provides links to download the updates Unfortunately that costs about for a year's subscription It's not just driver Downloading updates safely update & BIOS that I'm broke it's also kind of scary My question may be Downloading BIOS update & driver updates safely foolish especially since I downloaded and installed the program that does the checking without knowing anything about it But I'd really like to know if there is a way to determine how Downloading BIOS update & driver updates safely safe a downloadable application is quot before quot actually downloading and installing it Many thanks I look forward to hearing your advice JimB

A:Downloading BIOS update & driver updates safely

hello & welcome to TSF ,

driveragent is a very safe place to get your drivers from .....

i have a standing subscription with them for i do alot of repairs on a daily basis and trust them greatly and it is so much quicker & easier for me !!

now the best way you can get your drivers for free is to go to the home site of the manufacturer of the pc you have or the for the hardware that you have installed & to know the types of software you are using that require specific drivers like (Realtek AC/97audio & nVidia video & ATI chipsets & Intel & AMD ) and so many more that are used to run certain applications on a pc / there is quite a few that Microsoft offers thru the update site/plus many other trusted sites that you can get them from

but you need to know the specific driver that you need for you can get a driver that may look like the one that you need but rather is for a diifernt application and then you are then going to create a driver conflict and then you have issues on your pc and have to trouble shoot to find the issue

for you see some drivers for one hp will work on a dell , but then they wont for certain hp computers /then you have some dell drivers that will work on a hp or many differnt hps

then you have the differnce of having a laptop from a desktop

so the need to know is very inportant & can be time comsuming

i hope that i have shed a little light on the subject for you

so what drivers are you wanting to update / well what type of pc do you have / is it a prebuild ( purchased from a store like a Dell or HP ) or is it a custom build (you built it yor self or had someone build it for you ) ?

A:Softpaq - Installs updates [and flashes bios] only to reboot...

Your post is not that clear but in any case we are just forum users (and not HP support) so we don't need constructive criticism ' Frustrating as it is, for some, consumer gear can sometimes provide a better user experiance than much more expensive corporate gear that seems more locked down and less often updated... Consumer motherboards for example see more micorcode and BIOS updates than worksation motherboards (and thus can take the latest CPU's with ease - big OEM's just expect corporates to replace their stuff often)... Anyway, as to what BIOS version you actually have installed on your workstation, look when booting as it should display it during POST (or go into BIOS and look). This should clarify the actual BIOS version you have. Then, if a later BIOS version exists, fetch the appropriate softpack from HP and run it. HP downloads for your system can be found here. Latest version in your case is sp76244.exe (BIOS 1.54 Rev A) and updates some UEFI vulnerabilities that as i understand are not being currently exploited (and can only be exploited with physical access to the system). It's critical according to HP but hardly a case of the sky falling. In any case, double clicking the HP softpack within windows will create a c:\swsetup\sp76244 directory containing the contents of the softpack and also autorun the update executable. The update executable will then check the BIOS version and indicate if it is the same as the softpack version or later than the softpack version before continuing. If the update is run within windows, it requires a restart to complete it's task (since it needs to put the CPU into 16bit mode to load BIOS into NVRAM, hense restart needed to get CPU into that mode)... If for some reason the update is failing, try the direct BIOS update method by placing the DOS BIOS found within the c:\swsetup\sp76244 directory on a FAT32 formated USB stick. Then insert the USB stick and during POST jump into BIOS and perform a BIOS update pointing to the USB stick. Not sure the exact menu worrding but it should be obvious. But if your confusion is related to the "HP tools" that tell you when new updates are available, then i can't offer much as i always manually update my systems and don't use the HP tools to automat it for me (i keep tight control of what i allow on my system)... It simply maybe that HP tools has not detected the latest BIOS and this sees a new varsion available - uninstall and resinstall HP tools may or may not resolve such issues... Or simple refere to the HP update site periodically and see what you consider worth updating

Yesterday I updated my BIOS because I noticed that the one loaded was considerably behind the latest releases the nd to last stating some added compatibility with Vista SP Since I have SP installed I figured it would be a good idea to update to the latest Usually firmware fixes scroll forward so the latest one would have all of the improvements and optimizations Well my boot up time increased significantly at least and perhaps up to I took the absolute latest BIOS for my machine and yes I verified that it is for Vista x So I figured perhaps I things, not them? worsen improve updates Shouldn't BIOS should roll back to the nd to last updated Shouldn't BIOS updates improve things, not worsen them? BIOS--same thing Now I'm thinking that maybe this wasn't such a good idea and that I should go back to the BIOS I had originally I'm just wondering if anybody else has run into this kind of symptom with a BIOS update Also even though a BIOS update has various fixes and improvements is it always best to wait until there's an obvious reason to upgrade such as support required for an added device

I replaced the mobo on my Dell 5510. Purchased from Dell. Sticker on mobo says BIOS ver A05. About every other day I get blue screen and physical dump of memory. My system info says my BIOS ver is A07. How do I go about changing BIOS? Is it as simple as pulling battery for 15 seconds? Some have offered this suggestion but I get a little worried at "friends" advice.

A:Replaced MOBO on Dell 5510 BIOS sticker on MOBO says A05, system in still has BIOS of A07

Removing the battery won't change the BIOS version. You need to download the version you require from the Dell site. From Windows you "flash" the BIOS. Take your time preparing for this. If anything goes wrong you will wreck your motherboard.

Dell will soon be releasing updated desktop docking stations that are compatible with Type C and Thunderbolt systems.   These docks may require that you update your system's BIOS and install docking station drivers before they will function properly.   Older BIOS versions or lack of docking station drivers could result in the dock not being recognized by your system or not working as expected.   Once released, these docking station drivers and updated BIOS versions will be available on for supported laptop systems.

I have installed a lot of them because they show up in my windows update. Is that correct ? and if so can I just go through the installed update list and delete them?

A:32 bit updates on a 64 bit system

I am confused here, you should always install all updates from windows update, (except optional, they are not required)
I would not trust a tech "from system mechanic"
System mechanic is a known bloatware application. I would uninstall it.
That software is unnecessary as windows 7 can handle itself. 3rd party cleaning programs are not absolutely needed.

I was finally able to create a back up in Win7pro.64 bit after a lot of trouble with the error code 0x81000019. I let windows choose but of course I cant see just what was really backed up. I am limited to 1GB per month of internet data (really bad air card plan in remote location)I need to do either a reinstall or repair install of windows7, because of Adobe premiere elements 9.0 which likes to make a very irritating change to the registry.(no volume in program only) I have tried every fix I can find including Adobe desktop assist which did fix it once but the problem reoccurs repeatedly so this is my next test. My question is whether the system image (assuming it made one) backed up my updates and if so how can I apply them to windows after the fix. I have(pre-installed)7 and OEM disc. with upgrade.

A:system image & updates

Hello Riverman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

A system image will include everything on the selected HDDs at the time it was created including any Windows Updates that were already installed.

However, you will not be able to restore just Windows Updates from a system image backup. When you do a system image recovery it will restore everything as it was at the time the system image was created. You could manually extract files and folders from a system image though.

The only way to backup only Windows Updates is to download the MSU standalone installer for each specific Windows Update that you wanted to backup and keep it saved on another drive or partition. This will allow you to run the MSU to install the Windows Update.

Hope this helps,

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I installed some new updates from the Dell support page (all newly released updates from the past ~10 days; I usually install newly released updates every week or two). If I remember correctly I flashed the new bios (A07), updated Dell Update, some digital Dell services and some more minor updates. Since then, the Dell Update app also found an audio driver update (however there is none I believe), so it installed something.

Since then the audio on my computer does not work. I tried restoring to before the driver updates, and it doesn't work. I now read somewhere that this might be as a result of the new bios version. I will try now to downgrade to A06 and see if it works.

Did anyone come across this issue?

In the process of updating an XP SP3 system that needs updates. Are their directions available to move the updates from one XP system to another instead of beginning from scratch? Thank You.

A:Can we move XP updates from one system to another?

The updates need to be properly installed, and even minor differences between system might affect which updates should be applied.different updates, therefore you cannot simply forklift files from a patched system to an unpatched system.
If you nave many roughly identical systems to patch, you could manually update one, as you go noting the KB numbers of the updates needed for that system.. You could then download the manual version of te update from the Microsoft website and manually install the updates. You can find information and links to download updates individually by appending the KB number to (i.e for the update for KB2760583 go to ).
You'd still need to run windows update on each machine after manually installing updates, as some machines might have individual requirements.

hmm.. I would assume you have a 64 bit version of windows installed.  That being the case, some programs run in 32 bit mode which shouldn't be an issue and having an external drive shouldn't effect anything in terms of windows updates. I still wonder what is wrong and how to handle that. Also, I do not know how to allow specific websites through the Firewall. I know how to allow programs, but not websites. And judging from some answers on forums concerning this subject, it may not be the answer either. Thank you in advance for any tips.

A:Windows 7 System refuses certain updates

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

My computer got bogged down updating Windows 8. It caused the svchost to work over time and thus overloaded our bandwidth for three days!! If I go to system restore will it want to update Windows again? ( I have changed the settings to only update on command)
Don't want to over load the system again. Live in a remote area and have Sat Dish, it's the only form of Internet.

A:System restore. Windows updates.

If you go into system restore and create a new restore point after the updates, you can use that restore point and not have to re-download the updates again..

If you got Hughesnet downloads between 2 am and 7am do not count towards your usage..

After installing Windows Updates my pc does not restart as it says it will.
It needs rebooting, after which it goes into Repair Mode.
This prompts a System Restore and eventually it will boot up again, but often only after several abortive attempts. It seems to need to be left alone for 10-15 mins before a successful reboot.
I have posted thsi problem before and the nearest I got to a useful reply was being told that "it happens", and advice to turn off Automatic Updating which I have done. I only install what look like important updates and I haven't had the problem since, until now.
Any ideas please?

A:System not restarting after Windows Updates

I know you have probable done this before but the first thing to do is...

Run a full up-dated AV scan with your installed AV...
Run a full scan with malwarebytes, free version.

After you know that there is no problem as far as a virus or malware then do a sfc scan, here is the tutorial for doing so.

System Files - SFC Command

When the sfc is done look at the results, if there are any error's then run the sfc 3 more times each time you run it , it repairs more. This is the easy way...

1. Click Start...
2. Type CMD in the search box...
3. When to popup list comes up go to the top and Right Click the cmd.exe and run it as administrator...
4. When the command box appears then type sfc /scannow, notice the is a space between the sfc and the forward slash...

If your sfc won't run in reg mode the run it in safe mode. When you run the first sfc upload it to the forum so we can see what's going on.

If you have questions or need help then post us back and we will help...

I have a ms security update problem.
I have tried to load my latest update and it resets my computer.
My other problem is that the security update icon still remains and when I start up my computer the "install updates" notice appears and it is frustrating because if I say to download it it will again rest my system.
Any help is very much appreciated.

I had to disable windows updates for my Windows 10 OS because one of the recent updates keeps freezing my system. When I did a system restore to a point before the update, everything worked fine again, but everytime it would automatically update again the same problem occurred and would take me a long time to fix. Is there another option besides disabling updates? I don't have time to keep restoring my system and undoing the glitch this most recent update (week of 10/10/2016) causes.

Is there a way to program Windows to do this?
The checking for updates (not to speak of actually downloading and installing them) can really slow down work on the computer.

Hello helpers,

Recently my laptop (Dell Latitude E6410 - Win 7 64 - Intel i7 - 8 GB RAM) is getting BSOD. Also after starting it, it takes long time to come to teh desktop screen after logon. Randomly after the desktop seen, I cannot launch any application, and when checked, not all services are seen in the task manager. I need to reboot again, and I can run the program.

The dump files are attached for reference.

Quick notes:
1. RAM is upgraded from 4 GB to 8 almost after the Windows updates. I ran memtest86+ and there were no errors.

2. I updated BIOS too after BSODs, but no difference.

3. I have downloaded some new drivers (Intel chip, network etc.) but have not applied them as there are so many (Dell recommended), but will do based on BSOD analysis.

I have full admin rights, and run with an ID having Admin rights.

Any help much appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance,

A:BSOD Random (after Win 7 system updates?)

Welcome aboard,z007.

The cause of your current crashes is Intel Matrix Storage Manager (an obsolete storage solution by Intel, Replaced by Intel Rapid Storage Technology, and never necessary to run a computer), the driver date is June 2010.

Uninstall it at first.

And, if USB Selective Suspense is enabled, disable it.

Let us know the results.

Hi- I had a problem that developed recently and was characterized by browsers (IE, Firefox and Opera) opening very slowly. I tried to fix it by scanning for and removing malware, which did nothing. I finally resolved the problem by using System Restore, back to Jan 11, 2011. My question is: in using System Restore have I lost the Critical Updates to Win7? If so, might one of them have caused the problem? When I looked at Windows Update to see if it would show them as missing after the restore none of those updates appeared. Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks -Howard

A:Lost Updates with System Restore?

Yes, when you restore you also roll back the updates. What I would suggest is systematically adding any updates (one at a time) to see which one seems to be causing the issue (if it's even the updates)

I apologise if this has been asked before.

I have just had to put the system Windows 7/64 HP back to factory settings as the hdd failed.

I now see that there are over 200 updates to be downloaded and installed. Is there not a solution to this ie a "unofficial service pack". Alternatively please tell me if there is a way to slipstream Windows 7/64 - last time I looked there wasn't a solution.

I just ask as I would have thought large corporate users of Win 7 wouldn't be too happy with the unnecessary time to download/install etc.

Thanks so much for any constructive advice.

A:System recovery and windows updates

For SP1 integration Slipstream Windows 7 SP1 into a Installation DVD or ISO File

If you have a retail Windows 7 key though, you can just download the installer from MS Software Recovery - Microsoft Software Recovery

The rest of the updates you will have to download.

Companies can use Windows Services Update Server (WSUS) to deploy Windows Updates they wish.

Ive been help in friend with his pc installin norton, Ive installed Norton system works 2006 and internet security 2006, ive done the live update for the internet security and it works fine after i restarted the comp,i then updated System works with the live update and then restarted the comp and it loaded the bios up and recognised the hard drive, but when it came to the Windows XP load bar screen, it froze before showing the Windows Xp Loading screen.

Any one else having problem with Norton Updates ? Or anyone got an idea how to fi the problem ?

A:Norton system Works updates

Norton Works and Norton Internet Security BOTH have the Antivirus.
Did you try to install Both Antivirus routines ???
Sounds like you have an internal fight going on.

If I were you I'd dump Works ... and install NIS only.
The extra routines with Works only causes more problems.

1: Remove all Nortons
2: Run this ..
3: Install NIS 2006 ... ONLY
4: Check back

NIS 2006 will give you Antivirus .. Firewall .. Pop/Ad blockers ... Spam blockers ... and more
What more do you want ???

My laptop has been working funny since last night and I really don't know what to do. It's not a virus though...
It all started when I downloaded Internet Explorer 8, my computer crashed and when I rebooted it automatically restored to its initial point: when I had Internet Explorer 7. However, for some reason, it didn't restore properly and now the system is really slow as well as working not properly.

1) whenever I switch it off/ switch it on it starts configurating 3 updates.... all the time

2) Internet Explorer doesn't work and I have to use Firefox or Chrome

3) Windows Mail won't let me write emails or typing text in replys, etc.

4) The system is really slow and bugged

5) also the stupid sidebar doesn't show the gadgets properly

HELP me please!

Thank you!

I have noticed that some things keep getting reset after some MS updates are performed.
Specifically I have my desktop background set to do a slide show of the wallpaper, every so often after an upgrade this is reset to no longer do the slide show, I must activate it again.
Another item is that in folder options i prefer to have each folder open in a new window, this has been turned off and I need to go back on turn it on again and again.

Has anyone else noticed these annoyances?
