Preferred Solution: We Need advice on mail server software

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm trying to get my M$ Proxy Server 2.0 to see Incoming and outgoing e-mail(eudora).

In the Winsock Proxy server Protocols POP3 is on POrt 110 using TCP and Inbound. SMTP(Client)mis on Port 25 TCP and listed as outbound.

In the permissons Protocol on Winproxy POP3 and SMTP(client) are set to grant access to everyone. The mail server is listed in the LAT file. Eudora's web site says to just enable the ports on Proxy and it will work. I thought everything I did enabled the ports.

A:{Advice Offered} - E-mail & Proxy Server

Greetings

You need to install the Proxy client on all your user's machines that you want to be able to connect to the internet.

To do that, connect to the proxy server via Network neighbourhood and you will see a MSPCLNT share, and in it are setup files for the proxy server.

Install the proxy client, reboot the users machine, and they will be able to get their mail.

You need to have the proxy client loaded to be able to access any other port besides port 80.

i would like someone to make me feel better or worse that would difficult however about what i did today i realize this may be a hardware issue rather than a winNT issue we have a RAID file server running windows NT with Exchange server running on top of that when i came in to work this morning the server was beeping raid NT server - Offered} {Advice server - loudly and the console would not respond to keyboard or mouse input i tried the quot caps lock quot button -- nothing so i used an old strategy -- cycle the power and that didn t work i was later told by one of the it guys that you can t just quot cycle the power quot because the drives may be at that moment trying to sync and cycling the power would be disastrous the same folks spent the entire day rebuilding the server and looking at me funny when i walked by did i really do something wrong by cycling the power nbsp

A:{Advice Offered} - raid server - NT server

50/50 chance on that in my experience. Never have had it not recover from cycling the power though. Sounds like some other problem occured. However they have a point. If in fact a volume went down and raid was sync'ing the disks you could have done damage. I've had drives go down in a raid volume and the system still responded to the mouse and keyboard. So I think you didn't cause the problem.

Just my opinion though....

I use Avast! Antivirus and reccomend it to friends/family. It has a free eddition you can download and trial if you're unsure. You can get a free yearly subscription which is easy to renew when needed. I have never had a problem with Avast and think it might be a good starting point.

A:Server (WINDOWS 2008) Mail Issue (MAIL ENABLE)

This has now been resolved, by the kind folk at mailenable.

Here are details of the fix, from the email they sent me:-
Ok we have logged into the server and performed a telnet test locally on the
server to see if we were able to connect to the MailEnable POP, IMAP and
SMTP services which were unsuccessful. We could see that you are running
Symantec Endpoint protection which is includes a firewall option. We added
the MailEnable IMAP service to the firewall rules which allowed us to
successfully connect the IMAP service. You can now use the Horde webmail
interface and log in using the IMAP protocol.

We then tried adding the SMTP service to the Symantec Endpoint Protection
firewall rules, however this did not make any difference. So we then
accessed the MailEnable SMTP properties and enabled the alternate port for
the SMTP service to listen on (587). We were then able to telnet to the SMTP
service on port 587 which indicates that there is some other
application/firewall that is blocking access on port 25. I noticed that the
Windows firewall was also running so we added a rule to the firewall for the
SMTP service and can now successfully connect to the service and send using
the Horde webmail interface. I'm quite certain that your Outlook errors
should be addressed so give it go and see if you can send/receive from the
Outlook client.

Cheers, and I hope this helps anyone who has a similar situation.

Best regards

I'm a network admin, but I don't know much about how the mail system works. Currently we have an 2 NT DNS servers with a horrible freeware program that takes mail in from the outside and forwards it to our Notes server.

What I am want to know is what is the program that others use to do this? Does windows 2000 server or advanced server have some built in function that does this? I realize Microsoft's mail program is Exchange but we use Notes. So since we use Notes does this require a 3rd party app to forward the mail messages?

Thanks

Will someone please explain to me briefly what the difference is between all of these? Why would one want one over the other?

I guess that Windows 2000 is sort of like NT Workstation. If not, please tell me.

And what is the difference between Windows 2000 Server and 2000 Advanced Server?

A:{Advice Offered} - Windows 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, 2000 Anvanced Server--the difference?

Greetings

Win2K Professional is, indeed, just NT Workstation 5.0

The real difference between Win2K Server and Win2K Advanced Server is scalability. To quote a CNET article: "Three versions of the operating system will be available next week (it's an old article): Windows 2000 Professional, aimed at PCs and workstations; Windows 2000 Server, for file-and-print servers; and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, supporting clustering, which is a way of making several systems act as a single, more powerful computer.

To quote the FAQ from www.winmag.com:
Windows 2000 Professional is the workstation edition of Windows 2000. This is basically Windows NT Workstation 5.0, although Win2K Professional of course includes all of the new technologies for Win2K.

Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server is the server edition of Windows 2000, which is designed to serve small- to mid-sized businesses and workgroups. Server supports up to 4GB of physical RAM and up to 4 processors per computer. Advanced Server supports up to 8GB of RAM and 8 processors per computer.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is designed for large businesses and computer clusters. Datacenter supports up to 32 processors per computer and up to 64GB of RAM, as well as built-in clustering and load-balancing features.

Is that what you wanted?

Cheers

My client has 3 computers connected peer to peer. They are using an Access DB with the data file stored on one workstation (Win NT4) and the app installed on all three. (The other 2 have Win98.)

They want to add another 2 or 3 computers to the network in the very near future. How many computers can I add to such a setup without running into trouble? If I need a server, do I need an actual 'server computer' or would a high end workstation dedicated for file sharing sufice as the server? What specs would I need for a server?

If I stick with a peer to peer setup, the new machines would probably have NT or 2000. How can I keep one set of users that would apply for all machines or would all users have to be entered on each workstation?

Thank you.

I run an insurance/travel agency.. the only networking that i need is for hte insurance part.. quotes and a piece of softwa'res database is on one single computer right now..

2 other computers are networked to it (it acts as a server) but we are planning on getting another computer because we are going to hire another employee..

My question to you is should i just get another more powerful computer.. with more memory processing power, more RAM and more HD space.. or skip all that and get a server?

A few of the techs that work with the software i use say that having that computer act as a server is sufficient considering that i don't run too many computers off if it, but that is why i am here asking you all... i am going to buy it very soon your prompt responses are appreciated

Reboot. Re-apply the Service Pack. Reboot.

Viola... WINS is running on your server.

A:{Advice Given} - Proxy Server in W2K

Greetings

Win2K has a proxy kind of service natively. You will be able to do modem/internet sharing, RIP processing and other proxy functions. What you will not get is Proxy cacheing or firewall abilities. For that you will need to install M$ Proxy 2.0 or another proxy software package.

Based on your situation and what your saying its probably better to use a decent desktop machine rather than dedicated server hardware, its what 90% of small and medium businesses tend to go with.

I'm looking to start my Apache server just for fun but I don't know a lot about security and servers, is there much to do to harden the server?

A:Apache Server: Advice?

Apache by itself is pretty secure if you have a recent version. It is PHP and other active content things that provide the biggest security holes.

If you are planning on serving static webpages then you have little to worry about. If it is going to be something using PHP, MySQL or similar then you should watch what you install/do and always keep the software up to date.

Okay, I deal with two domain controllers at work. Last night I got a call from some people working with us who said they could ping my BDC, but not the PDC.
Today I showed up and the PDC was completely off. After calming the big bossman down and bringing it back up, I checked the event log, and it stated that at 7:45 in the previous PM, there was an unexpected shutdown. Now I'm wondering, there couldn't have been a power outage, because the BDC and another computer were still on and reachable, but is there anything someone can do remotely to shut the machine off? Or could it have just been someone with access to our office, for example the cleaning staff? After all, our servers aren't in a secure position. Lastly, is this a dumb question?

Hello,

I'm interested in making my system into a server. I'm not sure if this is the right terminology. But what I mean is that, I want to be able to access my computer from other computers by typing in my IP number in the address bar. I've seen people do this before (especially with people with cable).
How might I go about doing this?

Thanks For Any Help,

A:{Advice Offered} - server?

Greetings

Do you then want a Webpage to appear? If so, then you need to install Peer Web Services. I do not know if WinME has that option available (it was available in Win95 and Win98). If you had Win2K, you could install IIS (Internet Information Server) 5.0, which comes with Win2K.

What you can do, is go to www.apache.org and download the Apache web server, which is one of the most well used web servers on the internet. Download the Win32 executable, as the other downloads are for Linux, BSD and other operating systems.

I was doing some clean-up of our stock room and found out that we have a bunch of 486 machines that the department is just willing to throw away because of obsolescence.

A colleague suggested that I get a decent machine and run it as an applications server for the 486's.

He mentioned it works like the teller machines at banks where they all get their apps off of a single powerful machine.

My intentions, if this is to be pulled off, are just 2-3 486s connected to one PIII. I am just hoping it could run Office programs and the Internet.

Any suggestions on how to get this up and running would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

A:{Advice Given} - Application Server

OK... you can install Win2K Server and with it comes Terminal Services. You then create client disks for what ever OS you decide to use on the 486's (win311 or win95 perhaps), and install the terminal Service Client on the client machine OS.

You will then connect to the Win2K server, and Office and Internet Explorer will then be run ON the Win2K server, and all that will be sent to the client machoines will be the Desktop images as you work. And all that will be sent from the client machines will be the mouse movements and clicks, and the key strokes.

Before you install Office 2000 on the Win2K, you need to download the Terminal Services patch for Office 2000. If you don't then Office 2000 will not be able to be used by Terminal Services users.

Im not too sure if this is the right section to post in since its not really a problem with a game. Depends on what your computer can do. Since you wanna host 40 people, is this going to be local server or dedicated to another type of server? (wherever it is) what your computer specs? cores speed and RAM is the main thing.

I have high speed internet and am interested in running my computer as a server so that other people can access it. How might I go about doing so?

A:{Advice Offered} - Server

Greetings

If you are running Windows9x (Win95, 98 or ME), then I suggest you install the Apache web server. It is one of the most used web server software packages used on the internet.

If you are running NT4.0, then I also suggest using Apache as IIS4.0 is not good enough (in my humble opinion) to be used as a decent web/ftp server.

If you are running Win2K, however, then I do suggest using IIS5.0 (it comes free with all versions of Win2K). It is a very robust and feature full web/ftp server.

Obviously, if you are running Linux, then Apache is once again recommended.
Then, once you have your server sorted out, and you have your web sites ready to go, you will then need to register a domain name with InterNic. They will ask you for at least two authoratative DNS servers which will point to your web sites. Talk to your ISP for more information regarding this, as I am sure they will be able to help with not only the DNS but also the registration with Internic.

Once that is setup, all you will then need to do is tell people that your sites are there. I think there are a few programs that you can download that will register your site with a load of search engines.

Hope that helps

I need help specing out a rackmount server for my website. It needs to run Windows 2000 and have SQL. What considerations should I look at in buying a server to host my site? I'm getting about 100,000- 200,000 hits per day and the site is written in asp.net. Single or dual CPUs? Power supply? Motherboard? What sized hard drive(s)?

A:Rackmount server advice needed

I think that the first thing you considered is the RAM. The more the better , and somewere around 1 Gig should do it.
Also should think about a mobo with a raid array , since you need to serve pages fast. Based on those 2 thing you should start to shop for the rest. When it comes to single vs. dually cpu's, i belive that a single cpu should do it ,since it will only be used for web purpoises.

From there click on the Menu item Policy then User rights. Scroll down the list till you see, Log on localy to server, change that to what group you want to be able to log onto the server (or everyone if thats what you want). After that you will be all set!

We have an NT network here in our office. We are thinking of adding an Exchange server, but the thing is I don't have much knowledge about Exchange. Can anyone recommend any good books or websites that will help me understand and setup Exchange? I would greatly appreciate anyone's info or advice. Thank you.

Oh, I have two questions about Exchange.
1. Do we still need to have our email accounts hosted by our ISP?

2. Do we have to purchase Exchange separately or does it come with NT?

A:{Advice Given} - Any Information on Exchange Server?

Greetings

The best resource for Exchange that I have found is www.Slipstick.com. If the information you need is not on the site, it will have a link to a site that does.

1) No. If you have an exchange server, the mailboxes and email accounts are housed locally. However, you will need to get yourself a domain name (ie MyCompany.com), and you must inform your ISP to set an MX record pointing to your DNS Server. You will also need to install DNS service on your domain controller and add an MX record for your Exchange server.

2) In a word... Hell No! Exchange is very definately a seperate purchase. If you have less then 50 users, you could look into getting Small Business Server, which will give you Exchange, SQL, IIS and a few other Back Office products, limited to 50 users at a cheaper price then a full exchange purchase.

I'm installing a second exchange server and just wanted to get something clear. When I add second exchange server to the same site it is suppose to replicate with the first exchange server correct? And how extensive is the replication? Can I bring down the old server for upgrades and still not lose exchange functions? I guess what I asking is the replication good enough to remove the exchange services from the old box and just to run the exchange on the newer box. Trying to stay away from backups if possible because the old box runs other services and needs to remain on the network. Thanks in advance for any help.

A:{Advice Given} - Installing second Exchange 5.5 server

Greetings

Well, if you want to REMOVE the first Exchange server, then you will have to first move all the mailboxes from the one server to the other, which is not part of the normal replication. What Replication does, is replicate the Directory information, and the public folders (if it has been set to replicate public folders).

There is a way of moving the mailboxes in Exchange, but I am not sure that you can automate the moving of ALL the mailboxes.

A:{Advice Offered} - NT Server Service

Greetings

If you want a program to run as a service, there is a program that comes with the NT Resource kit that will make any .EXE an NT service.

However, it is pretty limited in scope. A better solution is to get ServiceMill which is a commercial package that will allow any EXE, COM, BAT and CMD file to become a native NT service. They also have an OCX available, so that you can add it to any program you are writing, so that it can be installed as a service.

Hope that helps

A:need advice for file server spec

What is your budget?

You should consider getting a real server box with real hardware RAID, preferably SCSI or SAS. SAS would be more flexible, because you can attach normal SATA drives to that too.

The processor is totally unimportant - anything sold today will be more than enough. A good place to save money.

XP would probably work, but as Rick said, something Linux or BSD would be much more solid (and you'd save the price of XP).

Are you sure DVD is enough for backups? 300 gigs of data is some 40-50 DVDs Two USB2 external hard drive enclosures would be more feasible maybe.

A:{Advice Offered} - Setting up an FTP Server

Your best bet, would be to have a look at Apache Web Server.

It is an industry standard (it host more websites then IIS), it is open source, it runs on NT, Unix and Linux servers, it is free, it is small, it is well documented and relatively easy to install. One of it's major plusses over a system like IIS is that you are able to RESUME an FTP download... something that is still lacking proper support in IIS.

Go to the website... there is a lot of documentation there.

Put the Server's IP address into your browser's address bar, and click on the Go button. Did it get to the web page and view it ok?

If so, then the problem is not on the server, but on how you are trying to access the server.

Open up a command prompt and type in "ping {Web server name}".

Does it try connect on the new static IP address, or on the old Address?

If it is the old IP address you must try fix your name resolution. Perhaps you had a static entry in the WINS server, or perhaps there are now two entries in your WINS server for the same machine. Check your DNS server. Also, make sure that you do not have a HOSTS or LMHOSTS file that is pointing to the wrong IP address. (The HOSTS and LMHOSTS files can be found in \windows\ on Win9x/ME and in \winnt\system32\drivers\etc in WinNT/2K).

Tell us what you find out.

Cheers

Help, Our web site has been hacked twice. We use IIS with the current service pack. I have tried running a security program and the ports remain open. I have stopped services for FTP and SMTP and still the ports show up as open. Any ideas?

A:{Advice Offered} - IIS Server and Security

1. Do you have a proxy server, ie. proxy server 2.0 by MS.
2. If yes, to # 1, make sure its configured properly, and that with the two nic config. check the nic which is connected to the Internet and see if IP forwarding is selected. YOu don't want if forwarding packets to your LAN.
3.You could also try a free download such as zone alarm. (a software firewall)
4. Now test your vulnerability by going to the below posted link ("Shield's up"), which after choose the appropriate button will either scan your ports, or test your shields.
* Note you can try this before installing zone alarm, then after to see the difference.

** zone alarm can be downloaded from: http://www.zonelabs.com/download.htm

***Shield's up site: http://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2=4q2hzkpe

Hello again

This is my problem........
I am trying to connect a win98 Pc to a RAS Server over a modem link, but when I call in to download the global address book it vaildates the password but then tells me that the microsoft exchange server can not be found ............any ideas

A:{Advice Offered} - Ras Server conection

Greetings

Ok... firstly, can you ping the IP address of your exchange server? Can you then ping it's server name?

If you can ping the IP address, but not the Server name, it is possible that there is no valid form or Name Resolution, and you must then use a LMHOSTS file to make that connection for you.
When you log onto your PC at home, are you using the same username and password that you use when you are at work? Are you using the Client for Microsoft Networks at home?

Does the RAS server, or the network it is connected to, have a WINS or DNS server? If so, make sure that the IP addresses for them are in your Dial-up settings.

Cheers

Basically this is GPO Server Structure in Advice on 2003 Win the first time I am designing an Active Directory for actual use and I just wanted to run it by some people who are knowledgeable with these things Basically it is going to be used in a small school with about users total only about extreme maximum would be logged in at any given Advice on GPO Structure in Win Server 2003 time I have an OU for the teaching staff administration staff and children Each of those OU s will have a single GPO linked to them that will be unique to Advice on GPO Structure in Win Server 2003 that group e g a child GPO an administration GPO and so on All the functions of that GPO will be recorded in a text document and securely stored for reference later then if anything needs to be added in the future it is added as a new GPO linked to that OU Therefore there will only ever be a maximum of two GPO s per OU one main one that is kept pretty much the same unless needs drastically change and one additional one that can be created and added if it is needed I m trying to keep to the quot as simple as possible quot rule and if personal preference factors in the above seems quite simple to me But does this make sense to you and how would you handle it Any advice is welcomed thanks nbsp

I have been doing quite alot of work having 2 operating systems on one machine.
My latest endevor is to place a NT server partition on a disk with win98.

I have for now just created a 2GB partition formattted it with NTFS and FAT16 but both times after the initial setup, the machine restarts and I am confronted with a black screen with a flashing cursor, nothing more.

Does NTserver not like partitions or is it the cheap disk partitioner i am using?

Any ideas?

A:{Advice Offered} - NT Server Partition

Greetings

Do you mind doing a "scorched Earth" re-install? Meaning, are you willing to FDISK the drive? If so, then this is how you should do it:

1) Run FDISK from a boot floppy. You can get one at www.bootdisk.com or here. The best is to create a 1 Gig drive for Win98.

2) At this question, follow the graphic's example and select N.

This will make sure the File Format is FAT16.

3) Install Win98.

4) Setup Win98 with audio, screen, etc drivers, so that it is running as you would like it to.

5) Install NT. There should be nothing but empty Space as the rest of your HD. Let the NT install program create it all as an Extended partition, but only create a 2 GIG partition that you will install NT onto.

You can create DATA drives out of the rest of the HD space later, using NT's Disk Manager.
If you are getting the blank screen after the dos-based portion of the NT install, it might be because the boot partition has not been written correctly. On my boot disk is a program called BootPart, which you can run off the boot disk, which can write an NT boot partition to the boot partition on your HD.

I've got a document scanner (my Canon MX870)
I'm getting rid of my documents - scanning and throwing in the bin

But, it's still annoying having to type notes with the document
How can I reduce this work?

The answer: OCR software??

I've never used OCR software before

OK, so I know you can use the software to get text from a PDF or image scan
But for my purposes, what should I do? How best do I file away - and then be able to retrieve or search?

One thing of importance is the file name itself

Does anyone know how the professional document scanning companies work?
What do they use? What methods do they use?

Thanks

Just in case, you could try to reboot your computer with the hdd plugged in, to see if it makes any difference.
Is the hdd recognized by Disk Management (Start-Run "diskmgmt.msc")?
If you boot your computer with the hdd plugged in, is it recognized by your BIOS?
Another option is that it's not getting enough power from your USB port, some external hdds come with two USB cables, one for power and one for data transfer.

There is also a chance that your hdd is dead.

I sure don't endorse the page and never have done business with them.

A full Adobe Photoshop 7 is for sale at $99.00 and I will admit that it does interest me.

Has anyone here had any experience buying this type of software and is it legal to purchase the OEM software?

I understand that you don't get company support, but that has never been a problem with me.

I have a new Dell with XP. Any personal experience you might have with purchasing OEM software would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Hi,
I have been asked by a small educational institution to implement web filtering for about 10 student computers. Their goal is for the students to have access to specific web sites that are on a school whitelist but not show any pics, videos, java content, etc. Basically just plain text. After googling around it seems that MS ISA server is an option (expensive but user friendly) or Squid (free but not so user friendly). I need it to have some basic features like a log of who accesses it and when, timed access, etc.
Any suggestions out there of what I can use to accomplish this? Are Squid and ISA the only choices? I also saw something called "Firestarter" http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/. Has anyone had experience with this?

Reformat the original D partition and expand the c partition to overtake the 7 gb that was the original d. Now my question is are there shareware products out there that will help me do that or will disk administrator allow me to do that. Any info is better than no info.

A:{Advice Given} - Added Harddrive for Terminal Server

Greetings

I dont think that is possible with shareware products, or native NT.

See, with native NT, the only way to recapture that 7 Gigs and add it to a HD is to make a Volume set, to include to space. Unfortunately, you can not have your ststem files on a volume set, as the volume set can not be read until NT is loaded, and NT can not load until the files are read off the volume set...

Of course, if you had Partition Magic, the whole operatin might take all of ten minutes. If it is an NT server, then you will have to do the operatin in the DOS version of Partition Magic, as the NT version of Partition Magic does not work on servers.

Scenario :

I have a master domain (MasterDom)

I have a resource domain (ResDom)

The ResDom trusts MasterDom

John has an account in the masterdom and logs in no problem

John is the member of a global group (Globgrp) in the MasterDom

There is a local group named Locgrp created at the ResDom

The Globgrp from the MasterDom is made a member of the Locgrp from the ResDom

A member (MemSrv) is part of the ResDom with a share named Resource.

The Locgrp is given the full control permission to the share and the NTFS permission of change.

When John logs in should he be able to access share Memsrv

Thanks in advance

Well... I feel like a question has been missed out, but here goes an answer.

You need to create a Global group in the Resource Domain. Put the Global group from the Accounts domain in the global group from the Resource domain.

On The Member server, create a Local group. Give the local group the correct permissions for the resource on the member server.

Then add the global group from the Resource domain into the local group on the member server.

Hope that helps

A:{Advice Offered} - Windows NT Server Setup

Greetings

It sounds like the drive you have is formatted with FAT32.

Here's what you can do:
1) Get a boot disk, ( I have one available from www.xperts.co.za/multiboot ), and use it to delete the partition, and recreate it as either FAT16 or NTFS (most bootdisks have FDISK and FORMAT, which will only give you the choice of FAT16. My disk has Partition magic, which will give you both options).

2) Recreate the partition as FAT16 or NTFS

3) Try re-installing NT.
Also, make sure that the active partition (the partition that is bootable), is NOT more then 8 gigs away from the start of the drive, and that the size of your system partition does not exceed 8 gigs (this is a flaw in the installation program for NT4, which has been corrected with Win2K).

Hi everyone I was hoping for some hardware advice recommendations for a SMB server build We currently have a server that s built on consumer hardware Phenom II X GB RAM and a gaming mother board but Advice Build? I am trying to set up a DHCP server, I need to know what other services are required along with DHCP example: WINS, DNS, ,etc.. Also what protocols to install besides TCP/IP. I tried NetBEUI and was able to log into the server with my laptop and a crossover cable, but when I use only TCP/IP it says there is no domain to verify my log in. But when I was able to log in the IP address was the same on every login, it was something like 169.???.???.???. Also when connecting a hub do I need to have some kind of serial connection from the hub to the server or just patch cables from the hub to the NIC cards. Thanks for the help.

A:{Advice Offered} - DHCP server & Hub info

I see Reuel hasn't gotten to this yet, so I'll give it a shot...
With my DHCP Server (PDC), I've got it with WINS, pulling the info from another site. Put WINS on there so you can resolve the computer names from the IP's...That way the only protocol you need is TCP/IP. If you're not getting your WINS info from somewhere else, you'll need to set up your lmhosts file. Put those settings on your server, add the new computer to your domain, then log on. If you've still got that 169.xxx.xxx.xxx do an ipconfig /release, then /renew from the command prompt, and I suppose that should be that.
As far as the connecting with the hub, I believe you can just run the patch cables from the NICs to it, if there is a switch for "normal" on the hub, go to that, not "uplink". Then again, I could just be talking out of my arse here.
But I honestly think the best thing to do is to try whatever Reuel has to offer...He's the man, in case you didn't know.

i know nothing about terminal server, but i'm wondering if a person with terminal server on their nt workstation can create a "session" with another nt workstation that doesn't have any of the terminal server "stuff" installed (a basic nt install) and does that mean that they can view your desktop, the things that you're doing, or what? does this make sense?

A:{Advice Offered} - terminal server question....

Terminal server runs on a server and allow workstations to run application on its CPU, via their keyboard/mouse/monitor. You use the CPU power of the server, not the CPU power of your machine. Kind of like the old dumb terminal days.

I don't think that has anything to do with what you are talking about...

Are you asking if it is possible for someone with NT Workstation to remotely control somebody elses NT Workstation?

i want to add a trusted site to my proxy server. how do i do it? i'm using ms proxy server 2.0 on nt server 4.0

A:{Advice Offered} - Proxy Server question....

Domain filtering is used to grant or deny client access to certain domains/IP addresses.

Click the checkbox next to Enable Filtering to allow filtering.

Options:
• Grant - Grants access to all domains except the domains that are specified.
• Deny - Denies access to all domains except the domains that are specified.

You can grant or deny access to:
• Single computer - Must specify the IP address of a specific system. Can click the ellipsis button next to the IP field, and specify a DNS name. It will then return the IP address of that DNS name.
• Group of computers - Must specify the IP address and subnet mask of the systems.
• Domain - Must specify the domain name to grant or deny access to.

I have a question regarding NT's Server Manager :

A friend has asked if services on a remote server can be stopped and started using server manager ?

I said yes they can, but not having server manager available I am now asking myself "Have I given him an incorrect answer"

So - can services on a remote server can be stopped and started using server manager ?

Thanks in advance

Tas

A:{Advice Offered} - Server Manager Question

Tas,
You are right. Open server Manager. Highlight the remote server, and use the menu bar: Computer > Services. This opens the services dialog box of those that are running on the remote server.

I have 4 servers: 1-PDC, 2-BDC & 1-Member.
One of my BDC servers has been experiencing "black screens" for no apparent reason. Upon reboot, there is nothing in the event log pertaining to the shutdown other than it was "unexpected". This morning I came in to find that my PDC had done the same thing for the first time. No indications at all. Upon reboot, the browser and replication services didn't start automatically and had to be done manually. I can find no error messages or anything dealing with the actual shutdown. I know there are thousands of variables and possible causes depending on certain factors, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this phenomena and had any success troubleshooting the problem.

Thanks!

A:{Advice Offered} - black screening server

Greetings

Try disabling all Power Management (in the BIOS, and in the OS), as there may be some incompatibilities. Other then that, I can only suggest running tests on your hardware (you can pick up a diagnostic diskette from HERE (run the program with a diskette in your A: drive; it will format the disk and set it up as a bootable disk that will run a Diagnostic Troubleshooting program).

Cheers

Hi My company bought out a company recently and now I have to manage a new server The server is windows server that is getting fairly old now not sure exact age of server There are no more than users accessing the server It is running out of hard drive space and sometimes the tape backup drive acts up This server does machine to if convert advice a a need virtual should server I a bunch of different jobs The server is running exchange server a blackberry server for a couple users ms sql server I think for some accounting software and it is also a file server I was thinking of replacing need advice if I should convert a server to a virtual machine it with a windows server but that would mean buying all new server software and office to connect to exchange Than I would need to migrate data to the new server I have a some experience with migrating right now as I have need advice if I should convert a server to a virtual machine setup a test lab to try things out using virtualbox So I have also been thinking about converting the windows server to a virtual machine and running vmware or other virtual machine software on a new server and using the image from the old server So my question is would converting the server to a virtual machine and running it that way be a good idea It would save a lot of money in software Does any one have any pro s and con s to this type of idea or would getting a new server be the best option Thanks for all the help nbsp

A:need advice if I should convert a server to a virtual machine

In my limited experience, virtualization is best for larger corporations that want to reduce the amount of hardware, energy consumption, and space requirements. A lot of the time, if you're a smaller company it would actually cost more in licensing costs to virtualize than to buy another server.

Is it possible to install nt 4 server ontop of a nt 4 server 120 day evaluation? Someone installed a server, and used it without knowing that that it was a evaluation copy! Is there anyway to fix this, I thought just installing nt 4 server ontop of it would work, but some people think its not possible.

A:{Advice Given} - upgrading 120 evaluation nt server to full

Greetings

Yes, you can, but you need the FULL version of NT4.0 Server, and not an Upgrade version.

To resolve this problem, upgrade the evaluation copy of Windows NT Server or
Workstation with the full retail version using either of the following methods:<ol>

[*] Start Windows NT Setup using the boot floppy disks supplied with the full retail version of Windows NT 4.0. If the boot floppy disks supplied with the full retail version are no longer available, you can create a new set from the full retail CD-ROM. For more information, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q131735 How to Create Windows NT Boot Floppy Disks

[*] Start Windows NT Setup directly from the full retail CD-ROM by using the winnt.exe or winnt32.exe command.
<ul>
[*] NOTE: Upgrading your installation using the upgrade retail version of Windows NT 4.0 is not possible. The full retail version of Windows NT 4.0 must be used. For more information, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q154538 WinNT 4.0 Upgrade CD Will Not Upgrade WinNT 4.0 installation

[*] NOTE: Upgrading Windows NT 4.0 over an installation of Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 2 or later applied may prevent the computer from starting. You must
uninstall the Service Pack prior to starting the upgrade.
To remove Service Pack 2 or 3, start the Service Pack installation program and choose the " Uninstall the Service Pack" option when you are prompted. To uninstall Service Pack 4 or later, use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

In addition, if you have uninstalled Service Pack 3, you must make sure that the
Windows NT security files are not replaced during the upgrade. To do so, follow
the steps below to perform the upgrade.

If Service Pack 3 or earlier was
installed, perform the following steps:
<ol>
[*] Copy the I386 folder from the Windows NT 4.0 full retail CD-ROM to the hard disk. In this folder, rename the following files as shown below:

+------------------------------+
| Original name | New name |
+------------------------------+
| Samsrv.dl_ | Samsrv.org |
+------------------------------+
| Samlib.dl_ | Samlib.org |
+------------------------------+
| Winlogon.ex_ | Winlogon.org |
+------------------------------+

[*] Expand the Windows NT Service Pack 3 files in a separate folder with the following command:

nt4sp3_i.exe /x

[*] Copy the following files from the Service Pack 3 folder to the I386 folder you created:

Samsrv.dll
Samlib.dll
Winlogon.exe

[*] To begin the full retail installation, click Start, click Run, type "<path>\winnt32.exe /b" (without the quotation marks), where <path> is the location of the I386 folder you created, and then click OK.

[*] When you are prompted during the Windows NT Setup program, choose the upgrade option.

For more information, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q146887 Repairing Windows NT After the Application of Service Pack 3
If you are running Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 or later, the following steps should be used to resolve the Stop 0x00000098 error message.

NOTE: There are a few differences between Windows NT 4.0 SP4 and earlier service packs, so the recovery procedures are different.<ol>
[*] Create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) by clicking Start, clicking Run, typing "rdisk /s" (without the quotation marks), and then clicking OK.

[*] Copy the I386 folder from the Windows NT 4.0 full retail CD-ROM to the hard disk. In this folder, rename the following file's extensions to .old (for example, Samsrv.old):<ul>
[*] Samsrv.dl_
[*] Samlib.dl_
[*] Winlogon.ex_
[*] Services.ex_
[*] Msv1_0.dl_
[*] Lsasrv.dl_
[*] Setupdd.sys
[*] Expand the Windows NT SPX files in a separate folder using the following command:

spXi386.exe /x

[*] Copy the following files from the SPX folder to the I386 folder you created:
<ul>
[*] Samsrv.dll
[*] Samlib.dl... Read more

First off don't know if this it the right forum. Aplogize if this is not.

Question: My company is currently looking at deployment of a Citrix Server to deploy all commonly used apps(Office,Financal,Legacy Database programs, email etc...) My concern is that if 65 users are hitting this server for its apps won't this cause a major network slow down. The server is a Compaq ML380 with 933Mhz,256k ram,RAID 5 and is connects to a 10Mbps 3com Switch. Most workstations run Windows 95 and 98 with a few NT. My first thought is to change the Router and Switch to 100Mbps. I would like any feed back on this. Thank you very much

Bob

A:{Advice Offered} - Citrix Metaframe Server

I don't know how well Citrix will put up with 65 hits on the server, but I can tell you for sure that you should go to a switching 100 hub. I don't like running at 10 with 3 computers.

What are you thinking of the router for?
