Microsoft office excel files - cannot open directly

Q: Microsoft office excel files - cannot open directly

1. For a while the computer has become very slow, to open a file takes two minutes and to print a page takes five minutes.

2. Unable to open excel file directly, a blank page comes up, have to go to FILE and then select particular file to open.

I have been told to reload M/S programme to resolve this problem. Is it correct?

Preferred Solution: Microsoft office excel files - cannot open directly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Client has SharePoint 2010 project server.
When the user clicks on a Excel file, the file open in the browser and when the user click on "open in Excel" we receive the below message
"To open this workbook, your computer must have a version of Microsoft Excel installed and your Web browser must support opening files directly from Excel in the browser."
Below is the browser version

However when the same is tried/accessed through a browser deployed on a dev machine, it works normally. Below is the version of the IE on the DEV server

What is causing this to happen?
Is there any tool to check the difference between the IE settings on my Desktop and the dev box.

Office 2003 on XP.

If I double-click a .doc or .xls file, I get a brief "Preparing to Install" window that goes away in a second or so. The app then opens to an empty screen. If I then click File/Open, I can drill down to my file and open it that way.

Anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Word and Excel won't open files directly

This is a long shot, but you may have to associate the files with the program they were meant for. On eway to do this is to open my computer, not any office program. Find the file (files) you want, right click and choose "Open With" and pick the correct program in the list.

In the future your files should open with the right program without any additional efftort.

Let me know if this works.

So I recently installed Windows 8 and Office 2007 (including Excel 2007). I then decided to participate in the Office 2013 trial, so I downloaded and installed that on top of everything. It worked correctly, and I could open files normally. Then I deleted Office 2007 in an effort to save space, and now I'm encountering problems.

Basically, every time I try to open an Excel file, Windows 8 gives me the "How do you want to open this file?" dialogue. I check "Use this app for all .xls(x) files" and click "Keep using Microsoft Excel" and the dialogue closes but the file doesn't open.

The only way I can get excel files to open now is by going to the Metro menu and opening Excel 2013, then opening the file from there.

Is there a way to fix this issue without resorting to the workaround method?

Thanks in advance!

When doing File -> Open in a Microsoft Office application (Excel, Word, ...), I can't drag files in the Open dialog box (for example, dragging a file over a folder). This applies in Windows 98, 2000, and XP. Cutting and pasting is an option, but why doesn't dragging work? It's not a problem in other applications (Notepad, Paint, ...).

I wanted to open an excel file directly from IE9, but when I double click the excel file in the browser, it opens right in IE instead of Excel program. How do I make the file use Excel program to open rather than open in IE itself? I am using Windows 7 and Office 2010. I tried the Microsoft registry fix but still it doesn't work. Hi all, I am using office XP.

I have this problem that I can't seem to open any excel file directly from my document or desktop, when I double click any file, it opens up excel and then just struck there with a "Ready" on the lower left corner....

But when I open from excel - File -> Open and it works.....

I tried reinstalling the program and tried 'Excel /regserver' but no luck....

Please help....

A:Can't Open Excel File Directly.

Your problem may lie within the the path of the icon on your desktop. Try this
Fix1
1. Open Explorer Start>Explorer
2. Find the Full name of your file (for ex. C:/MyDocuments/fred.doc)
3. Copy this name
4. Now find the icon and right click and select Properties
5. Find the target and paste you target over that

Fix2
You may have minimized/closed your file in a way that it has been minimized so try to look around you taskbar for the excel and right click select restore.

Lastly, you may just have to do it the hard way or try creating shortcuts via Rightclick on desktop>new>shortcut

While I do not have an answer for you why you cannot open directly, think on the bright side: You have to drag it out someplace first, then you can SCAN IT WITH ANTIVRUS, and finally open it. Safer this way!

Hello Community,

I'm having an issue here, and reading through threads and forum posts - i'm getting nowhere.

I get no error messages when trying to open a file from a mapped drive.

I have a user onsite unable to open any Mircosoft Office 2013 files from any of his mapped network drives. If he takes the files, copies them locally to his laptop, then open perfectly fine. However, if i try to open a office file from their mapped drive, it just opens up a blank document.

--I've done the changing folder name of the Microsoft folder within %AppData%, still no luck.
--I've tried repairing Microsoft Office, still no luck.

I don't want to uninstall office, then re-install as i will have to drop the computer off our domain (Group Policy for some reason, blocks office.) *I'd prefer this to be the final option.

Surely there must be a fix around? Much thanks!

We have been facing these problems in two of our computers with OS xp.

When we open any files in the winrar with double click, it opens any other files not in the winrar window.

For e.g. I have four pdf files compressed in rar format. When I open the rar and double click any one of the files inside, it opens an excel file in my desktop.

However if I extract the four pdf files anywhere and open it, it works fine.

Installed on my PC I have an old copy of Microsoft Office 2000. I use Word for my documents and made a spreadsheet on Excel for a game I play, other than that I have I have no knowledge of using the other features of this suite such as Access, Outlook or Powerpoint.

While downloading the latest Java update I noticed an ad for a freeware program called OpenOffice.org and after Googling it found that as far as I can see it is the same sort of thing as the Office 2000 suite only newer and probably more modern.

My question is, would the Open Office.org program be better than my outdated Office 2000 Suite and would I still be able to read my word documents etc using this program or would I have to keep Office 2000 as well.

Ok, well up until yesterday my father was using Office 2000 with Microsoft binder for work. He just got a new laptop for work and he's got Office 2007 installed. From the looks of Microsoft's site it states that 'Microsoft Unbind is not included with Office 2007.' Looks like what I really need is Microsoft Binder from Office 2000. Is there a place I can download it (legally) or purchase it? He literally has thousands of binder files (*.obd) that he needs to be able to access. I've tried searching with nothing turning up.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

A:Microsoft Office Binder (*.obd files) with Office 2007?

So further searching turned up that Unbind for Office XP/2003 is just a waste of time for Office 2007 and no point in looking further into that.

So then I found this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822622

Which seems to me if I can track down a Office 2000 disc I should be able to install JUST Binder 2000. Results show that it works along side Office XP/2003 so I don't see why it wouldn't with Office 2007. It would only be used to unbind old files, not create new ones.

If anyone has any other thoughts that would be great.
I'll look into what I wrote above tomorrow and post back with the results if need be.

Hello,

I am running Office 2003 on Windows 7. My PC is only 6 months old and everything has been running like butter. All of a sudden Office files open slowly when double-clicked from their respective locations (they would normally blink up). If I open Word or Excel and then open the files from there, they open quick. Outlook on the other hand, is just slow to load up...which it wasn't before.

I did a ton of research online and couldn't get a clear fix. My thoughts are:
Anti Virus? (I'm using AVG Free)
Ad-Aware Free? (Ad-Watch live is on...however it was on before)
Windows update or office update?

But obviously I'm here to get your thoughts. It's a pain in the ass when I bought a new PC so it could perform quick, and now spreadsheets and email take 20 seconds or more to open.

Hey All,

Here is my issue. The Company we consult for has not transitioned all of the way to Office 2007. We have a number of machines that still have Office 2003. Compatibility Pack works on almost all issues.

Current issue is one of our users received a PowerPoint 2003 that has embedded PowerPoint 2007 files. When the user opens the PowerPoint 2007 file Office 2003 shuts down. He has to download the 2007 file to his desktop.

From what I can see this is because the file conversion process shuts down Office 2003 before attempting to open the PowerPoint 2007 file.

Another issue that may be complicating the error is we had to run a Fixit patch from Microsoft that was causing Excel, Word and PowerPoint to be scanned which caused long opening times. I don't remember the KB article for that one at the moment but will find it if I need to.

Thanks for any help in advance.

A:Microsoft office excel problem.

Can you give more information to help diagnose the problem?

The error you are encountering is many times associated with a calculation that involves many cells at one time and the computer may not have enough RAM to complete the calculation. possible solutions (without knowing more about the problem) include,

1. Reduce the amount of cells to be calculated at one time.

2. check to see if the calculation formula or function is correct (sometimes a mistake in the formula or function itself may cause the computer to go into a "loop")

3. Install more RAM to accommodate the needs of the spreadsheet.

Let me know more info on the problem

My desktop pc is a Compaq Presario with Windows 95 and Microsoft Office. Recently it has started taking forever to close down a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet. The program itself closes out in normal speed but its the separate documents that take forever.

I have checked disk space - plenty available. I have done the usual maintenance ie defragmentation, scan disk etc.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If you're using office 97, according to microsoft, one possibility is that outlook is journalizing your other office documents. They say to start outlook and under tools / options / journal clear all the check boxes under 'also record files from' list. They say this can cause files to close slowly even if outlook isn't running.

I'm using Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2007 Professional. When I highlight a column, the highlighted color is so light that when I do a "Find" (Control F) command and it finds the value you can't tell it found the value. (The found value is in white which isn't much different than the highlighted column.) Is there any way I can darken the highlighted column? I've tried changing the color scheme for the entire program and that doesn't help.

When I open Excel 2003 the splash screen hangs for 30 seconds to about a minute and then excel opens and behaves normally.
All other office programs such as Word etc open quickly and behave normally.
If Excel is opened in safe mode , the program opens rapidly without any splash screen at all.

Any explanations and indeed a cure for this behaviour ?

Good afternoon,

I use a spread sheet which contains Check Boxes, that I manually tick to show a task has been fully completed. I have a basic formula that calculates returned items, and once it reaches 0 (all returned) I tick the box. I wish to have the Check Box auto-tick itself once the returned items count reaches 0. I'm damned certain this is possible, but beyond my abilities. I know you can have formulas to display text once a Check Box is ticked, I am kinda trying to do it the other way around.

Thanks for any help

You are correct, it is possible.

What you need to do is learn the Visual Basic for Applications coding in Excel. Then you can add code that runs every time the sheet calculates (basically when something changes on the page). The code can check the status of a cell and change the status of another cell (or object in your case) based on criteria you have coded.

I'm not a programmer but playing with Excel Macros (VBA coding) and manipulating excel cells is a long time hobby of mine.

The easiest way to learn is to record Macro's and then study the code. It is easier learning the code if know first hand what it does. After you are familiar with how the code works, you will be surprised at how easy it is to code your own macros. Once you have the macro working for you, it is easy to move the code and have it run every time the sheet loads, calculates, closes, or several other possibilities.

Are these files you are working on local to your machine or are they over some sort of network? If they are network files, it may be timing out trying to create temp/caches of the file you are working on as undo procedures. If it's a network file save a copy of it to somewhere local on your computer and try editing it.

Hello everyone,

I have two questions regarding Microsoft Office Excel 2007, that are no doubt simple ones to answer.

Firstly, is it possible to have a column where every entry added would appear automatically with quotation marks? For example, if I entered Movie #1 in to a cell in Column A, when I click out of that cell, can it automatically change it to "Movie #1"?

Secondly, on a seperate work-sheet (but within the same work-book), how can I have a display telling me how many cells appear in a particular column on another work-sheet? For example, if I have Column A in Work-Sheet #2 filled with entries, can I have a cell in Work-Sheet #1 tell me how many entries there are there in total?

I hope that all makes sense.

Any help would be appreciated!

In both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, when I do a "File, Open" command, a box comes up showing the contents of the last directory I used. If I then attempt to use the drop down from this box to navigate to a new directory, it takes 65 seconds before the drop down list appears, and then another 30-40 seconds before the drop-down menu responds to my request for a new directory.

I have uninstalled and re-installed Microsoft office, and I have run the "detect and repair" option in the help menu. Nothing seems to fix the problem. I have no idea why this is happening or what Microsoft Office is doing during those 65 seconds to produce the drop down list and during the following 30-40 seconds to navigate to a requested directory in the drop down list.

I do not have this problem with other applications such as Lotus 123.

Any ideas?

I have recently created an excel spreadsheet using Excel 2007 and have some worksheet protection and cell protection where necessary. It works great for Excel users, but when someone opens it using Open Office, it seems that the protection no longer exists and they have access to every cell on every worksheet, which should not be the case.

Is this a conversion issue between Excel and OO, or did I miss something when creating it in Excel?

My computer did some sort of restore yesterday. I'm not sure exactly what happened. My son was looking at the computer trying to fix a problem with the audio because nothing I tried had worked. On the Lenovo, there are strange things ..  delays. So i insert a row and then nothing happens. So i scroll the info off the screen and then back and boom, the row is inserted or deleted depending on what i did.  Also sometimes i have to click a few times to get the cursor into the cell.  When i adjust column sizes it is the same thing. I have to scroll up and down to make sure everything takes.  What is the problem with this on this machine. It doesnt happen on my old Dell. Any ideas? Excel works fine on the Lenovo when i am not pasting in information from that website.

When I try to open an office application I get this error message.

Something went wrong. We couldn't start your program. Please try starting it again. If it won't start, try repairing Office from 'Programs and Features' in the Control Panel.

When I try to change or uninstall in control panel nothing happens. I noticed as it's listed in the control panel programs it says it was installed 5/30/2016 and the file size is blank. This is office 2013 so I've had it for a few years and it just started this yesterday.

Also, when I try to open an existing document an additional error message pops up that says, There was a problem sending the command to the program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't think anything has changed on my computer over the last few days, except a couple of windows updates.

A:Microsoft office won't open.

If you have the installation media for Office 2013 you could uninstall it and re-install it - this will not affect your documents and other work as they are not stored along with the program files.

Alternatively, if this problem started recently, you could try restoring Windows to a time before this problem started and see if that fixes the problem.

I'm not sure if it because the files are 2003 or not? When I try to open them an error message appears stating, "...the file you are trying to open is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source..." These are my files. The interesting thing is that if I try to open the same file that I have saved within the last year (before I got 2007) then I can do it? That is, I have a cache folder of files that I go get to do calculations then save in a new job folder. The ones in the new job folder will open (also 2003), but the ones in the original cache will not? I would truly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

I have a similar problem as the previous posting but my problem is with Excel not Word. When trying to open any Excel file I receive the message: "There was a problem sending the command to the program." The only way I can access an Excel file is to open "All Programs," choose "Microsoft Office" folder, choose "Microsoft Office Excel 2007" icon, choose "Open" folder, and double click on desired file.

My computer is a three month old custom unit built with Windows 7 Professional. I am using Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. There have been no problems until this week.

Thanks for any help,

Wilks

Hi I m Excel Open error in #value! Solved: in but Office not using a Perl package WriteExcel to produce spreadsheets in XLS It works very nice though this is the situation Solved: #value! error in Excel but not in Open Office One uses workbook- gt write in Perl to write things on the spreadsheets so I write VLOOKUP B D E then with the same write I fill the range with some values also fill B with the searched value and that s Solved: #value! error in Excel but not in Open Office all It s a small KB XLS file When I open the file in Open Office-Calc like excel it shows all correctly If I open the same file in excel there is a value error where the VLOOKUP is If I F Enter at the cell where VLOOKUP is the error disappears If I send -when filling out the XLS file with workbook- gt write - VLOOKUP B amp quot quot D E the error persits as well as if i replace the column number by or value If I open and save that file in Open Office and open it in Excel the error disappears The thing is I can not rely on this because the XLS file is supposed to be produced on the fly downloaded from a web site by the user to finally be opened in either Open Office or Excel What could be the reason for the error The formula just looks the same before and after F Enter It seems of course that Excel quot feels quot some value is in the wrong format but so far no luck in putting the values in the expected format Thanks for the help Sample file is at http energiash com samples under name quot cuanti--ello xls quot nbsp

A:Solved: #value! error in Excel but not in Open Office

I tried also sending the matrix first and then the other data, ending with the formula. It did not work either.

What did worked was to switch to a similar PHP library by Johann Hanne which is based (most likely debugged also) on the John McNamara's Perl module Spreadsheet::WriteExcel (http://www.bettina-attack.de/jonny/view.php/projects/php_writeexcel/).

No "#value!" error is produced for the vlookup function.

Thanks for viewing and for best intentions in helping.

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knew how to create a macro that takes each letter from a string in one cell, and puts each one into its own cell. For example, if I pasted this paragraph into cell A1 then click my macro, this happens (edit: doesn't matter what case the letters come out in; caps or as they were written):

EDIT: A macro to do the opposite would be useful too, i.e. take all the information from the seperate cells and put it into one string. Thanks.

EDIT2: The formula CONCATENATE(a1;b1;c1) etc seems to work for the opposite, except for the fact that i'm working with strings 1000 characters long, and CONCATENATE(a1:z100) or whatever doesn't work, it just returns the letter in A1. Any ideas?

I have a 32 gig flash drive on which is an MS Excel 2007 file with all my passwords, serial numbers etc.

Last week I purchased a new HDD and successfully installed Vista Home and MS Office 2007 but when I click on the Password File on the flash drive, I get a message that "Excel cannot open the file .............. .xlsx due the file format or extension being invalid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that file extension matches that of the file format.

I have tried opening it in MS Word and other similar programs but no joy.

I downloaded the MS Compatability Pack but nothing................

Any ideas on how I can get this important file to open properly using Excel?

Virtually nothing has chaged to my way of thinking except the reinstallation of Excel again!!

A:Cannot open MS Office 2007 Excel file

It doesn't help, I know, but if you manage a successful recovery, I'd suggest saving what is a crucial file in text form. "Ah, you fool!" I hear you say. "Text files can be read by anyone. Why would I keep my passwords etc. in a text file?!?" To that, my response would be ADS. Look it up.

Hello,

Great Forum. Wonderful, knowledgeable folks.

Had to re-format HD, and seems to be working now.
But for how much longer, who knows.

On the old setup, I had MS WORD and Excel.
Many existing files of both.

I only have, if I remember right, 2 or 3 downloads allowable/available from the
Student Edition of them that I purchased a while ago.

So, I don't want to use up what is left on my present PC, as I have real doubts about it lasting much longer.

I heard about Open Office, and that it is free, and "completely" compatible with the MS equivalents. True ? Or,... ?

Is this what I want ?
Are there "better" free ones tghat would work very well with my existing WORD and Excel stuff ?
If so, suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

A:Open Office, And MS WORD/EXCEL Questions

Both Open office and Libre Office can open most Word/Excel documents provided they don't use any incompatible features. They will not open any encrypted documents however. It is also possible to save documents in .doc and .docx format though how compatible the .docx format is I am not sure.

I know I can do this as I have done it in the past a long time ago. Using the Find and Replace option add and extension to my sku numbers, such as:

SKU #

8686708052

I have a column of these sku's and want to add the extension .jpg to all of them at one time!

8686708052.jpg

I have done this in the past and can't remember what I did and it worked great instead of having to manually add the .jpg extension to every sku #!

Thanks!

Hi All of a sudden microsoft word will not open properly. I get the page with the hourglass but it doesn't open to a fresh page for typing and I cannot open any of my documents either. I have tried system restore but didn't have a point far enough back for it to work. I have tried reinstalling from a disk I had from my old computer, but it doesn't work either.
I don't know why it would suddenly just stop working, it keeps telling me to report the problem, which I have done endlessly.
I am on XP using an admittedly old version of Word (2000) but it has always worked just fine before.
Can anyone help me with this please? Many thanks.

The following page on the Microsoft web site explains how to set default programs to open different file types in Windows 7.

If your current trial installation of MS-Office has expired and you do not wish to purchase it, then yes, you can uninstall it.

HiI downloaded the MS Windows Install Cleanup utility from the support MS site and ran it. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;2903011. Run the MS Windows Install Cleanup utility2. Select the non MS Office 2003 versions and hit remove. This will generate some kind of error message and crash the utility interface, but no harm; once you restart the util the entry for the selected item is gone.3. Repeat until all non MS Office 2003 office versions are gone (I had to do four, two for each older version).4. Reboot and voila! No more annoyance! Hope this helps everyone! or try thisIf, when using a MS Office application, you have the message "Preparing to install ....", just create an empty folder named "XLStart" in the following position: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11".Now restart your excel application and it should work ...Source: http://icrontic.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-12340.htmlHope this helps TKP

Microsoft has officially confirmed attacks targeting a Critical 0-day vulnerability affecting various releases of Office Excel. According to the Redmond company the vulnerability is actively being exploited in the wild, and a patch is in the works, although no security update is available as of yet to resolve the flaw. The Microsoft Excel Invalid Object vulnerability is rated as Critical because it can allow an attacker to perform Remote Code Execution on an affected system in the eventuality of a successful attack. Attacks against the security flaw generated by a Boundary Condition Error have initially been reported by security company Symantec.

I've got two different spreadsheets in Microsoft Office Excel 2007 that rely quite heavily on graphs. Now, the issue I'm having isn't stopping the practical functions of the spreadsheet, but it is aesthetically frustrating.

Each time I access either spreadsheet, some of my graphs data labels reset their formatting and styles. Approximately 75% of the data labels remain as they were originally formatted, but approximately 25% of them reformat themselves each time. I correct it by formatting them the way I'd prefer, and I re-save, but the next time I open the spreadsheet they've gone back to their default state.

Now, this is only the formatting, not the content of the data label, but it is still frustrating.

Can anyone please give some advise as to how I can fix this?

Hi All,

on this occasion Google has not provided me with the answers i am looking for.

I have got an excel macro that i have sent out to a number of people, for those who use excel it is fine but i am needing it to work in open office or similar open source free program for the few that dont have access to MS Office.

I know that the coding is different and after the research i have done it seems that there are extentions or converters that make the VBA code work in Open office.

Does anybody know how i can get this to work? I can not find the extentions but am told they exist.

Any help would be really great

Cheers

BTW this is what the Open Office site claims:

It freezes if I try to open an existing file
If I create a new file, and click File + Print or File + Print Preview, it freezes

Open Office Writer:
It freezes any time I try to print

I sure hope I don't have some kind of virus.
