Preferred Solution: I knew better... but

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:I Wish I Knew What To Put Here But I Don't

Hello, mrmahaffyWelcome to the Bleeping Computer Forums. My name is Jat, and I will be helping you with your situation. If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will have to close your topic. You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic. The topics you are tracking can be found here. Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself. Please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.Let's begin with ComboFix:ComboFixPlease download ComboFix from one of these locations (If you already have it, delete it and download again):Link 1Link 2Link 3* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your DesktopDisable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Instruction can be found hereDouble click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:Note** ComboFix was designed only to be used under the supervision of a helper, not for general use.Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

A:I Wish I Knew....

Hello chrissymike,Welcome to Bleeping Computer Please don't bother purchasing Panda, as you have too many AntiVirus programs as it is. You should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running 2 Anti Virus programs. (Norton and McAfee) When you do this both programs compete for resources, and the end result is neither does it's best and can cause system instability. I recommend that you choose the one you want to keep, update it, disable or uninstall the other one, and use it as an on demand only scan occasionally.I see Viewpoint installed.Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we knew in 2006; read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present. * Viewpoint * Viewpoint Manager * Viewpoint Media PlayerI notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:1) Run Spybot-S&D2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any promptsYou can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean. This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.1. Download this file - combofix.exe http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall. Thanks, tea

Hi lynz-

You will most likely receive a faster response to your HJT log if you post in our dedicated forum, HijackThis Log Help . It looks as though you have a couple of bad guys aboard.

It would be good to know what settings you changed, but that may be for this forum still.

Hi i_oWn_u---I have split off your post to your own New Thread> please make all replies here....having your own thread will allow you to get help easier. We do not advise tacking a Hijackthis log or request for help with malware onto an active thread as it gets confusing for all of us.

Who hasn't visited the Microsoft at Home website recently?

Then you would have noticed the blatent glitch on the first page LOL

Who would have thought that with their seemingly unlimited resources they can't get this little glitch sorted

A:You'd think they knew what they were doing LOL

What browser are you using? Works fine in Firefox 3.5.

I ran 'HiJack This' in preparation to ask for help from this forum. But... When I found out what the 'hosts' file did and tried to test the "bad" IP address that I found there, I got even more porn related stuff thrown on the machine! Boy... do I feel dumb!

Now when I try to run another 'HiJack This' to pick up the new stuff, I can't save it to a file because it's in "Fix Checked" mode! NOW WHAT?

Anyway... I sure would appreciate someone's help in cleaning up this mess. I've read the HijackThis tutorial, but think that I should get some real expert help before proceeding.

Can someone tell me how to reset the 'HiJackThis' program so that I can produce an updated listing - so that I can then ask for help - with an up to date listing?

I am running winxp sp on my laptop about weeks ago my system really started slowing down to the point every program took - minutes to load and i have to type slow or i would get that annoying beep takes about a second for each letter to show on screen which sucks cause i type pretty fast checked for malware spyware and virus nothing turned off everything through msconfig didnt help a bit reinstalled xp back to nice fast typing and program loading until i did something real stupid I updated windows and all the problems are back since the format and reinstall i have updated drivers system software and all the usual linux use i wish knew to really how tricks but nothing is working to solve the system lag my cpu usage is sitting at most of the time or when systemidleprocess decides to go nuts any ideas on a fix did MSC screw up again or are they trying to get us all to upgrade to their new OS again

A:really wish i knew how to use linux

System Idle Process will have the majority of your CPU usage almost all the time...system idle process doesn't *actually* use any of your CPU and wouldn't account for the lag. What you want to look at is what programs are using a lot of memory and see if anything else is using the CPU aside from System Idle Process.

As they were duplicates of one another.

Do your speakers have a volume control on them? Usually only one speaker will have a volume control, and this will adjust the volume on both speakers.

Ok charles so its a virus. Its in a temp folder so just follow the path to the 2 files and right-click and delete them. You dont need them or basically anything in the temp folder. If you are not logged on as an admin you can elivate privledges to do it.

Hope this helps

If you have a mouse, hover over an application open in the taskbar. Note: It has to be an OPEN aplication. Now click down the scroll wheel. It opens the application without right clicking and selecting it again! Does anyone else know about this? I have been using Windows 7 since 2010 and never noticed this.
Thanks, CoreyTech.

A:Something I never knew about Windows 7

Even if the app isn't open but it is pinned to the Taskbar, clicking on it with the center mouse button also opens it.

and, I did, a few years ago... now, I realize that i was 'kludging' thru (the hard way) to find the solutions to the problems I was encountering... and then, Vista comes along, and Windows7, and i feel lost, even in XP...

i was able to fix systems, and can probably do so again, but I want to feel like I know what I am doing and WHY...

I got LOTS of questions, most of which will wait til later...

The question ive got right now is this... HOW COME, the system tells me I dont have Administrator Privileges to make a change when i am logged into an Admin account, EVEN when I am logged into the Admin account through Safe Mode Boot, which i 'thot' was the 'hi-priv' (super-user) account.

What can i do to get the Windows system to recognize my rights to make these changes, eh?
any response most welcome,

Note: this could belong in the games forum, but I'm not positive.

Built a new system (see below #1), with lots of advice from you guys and for the first week or so, hubby was extremely pleased with how it ran and played his RCT3 game.

Now, all of a sudden he says it is just as slow and stuttery as the old system and the game crashed tonight, losing hours worth of building. Nothing has been done to the computer, except we disconnected everything and rearranged the room -- twice. What could possibly be wrong?

The title should show Intel not Microsoft (sorry).

Intel offer a suite of utilities for Intel mobo owners here:
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/software/idu/download.htm

However, before downloading, I would offer the following precautions. This entire suite is intended for Intel mobo owners; however, buried in the 3rd-party software folder are two gems that probably can't be found anywhere else for free today. They are:

Diskkeeper Lite v9.0
NT4 Backup Now! Suite 4

So, for my purposes, I deleted everything except the 3rd-party folder and then installed the above two programs. That way you can't unknowingly attempt to install an Intel mobo monitor on a non-Intel mobo. Note, there is a Passmark "stress test program" but it is only intended for Intel mobos.

Check it out!

We knew it would happen sooner or later, but maybe all hope isnt lost.I would think that because mozilla is open source the mozilla foundation will keep releasing fixes in new versions. But this sucks.

A:We knew it was only a matter of time.

As a prediction, I am not sure how good it is, since malware will continue to target the dominant browser, IE. I also note that Mozilla seems much more able and willing to issue patches in a timely manner than has been IE hitherto.

John

I have this Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000, and when I hook it up (usb) it automatically installs the drivers and is said to be working properly... when I try and type the characters are all mixed up... the keys I type are not the characters lol... I have tried to uninstall and re-install it but I have had no luck... and i would think it would have something to do with keyboard layout, but i don't seem to be able to configure anything...
this keyboard makes me feel.... incapable lol

thanks

A:Never knew a keyboard could be such a pain

Hello Deathrail,

It looks to me like the XP (I'll assume you have XP) drivers for your keyboard aren't the ones you really want.

Firstly, unplug your new keyboard and put your existing keyboard that works in and restart. Then go into device manager (shortcut for XP: windows key + break) and select your driver under keyboards and right click on it. Click Uninstall.

Then insert the disc that came with your new keyboard or browse for the drivers online. Install the drivers as you normally would do with a program and plug in the new keyboard when prompted. Everything should be AOK now.

If not, then you probably have a driver conflict (check for any exclamations in device manager.)

Yes, new generation laptops has integrated mic and web cam. You can check on Dell website or if you see a dot hole on laptop (usually being at under the keypad or top of the LCD screen), that means you have it. I think you don't have any Mike problem with Dell 600m. So Inspirion D600, can you tell me when you go to sound settings on windows what are you seeing in there for sound recording device?

I've looked everywhere on the net and through the forums here. Just a quick question.

How do I make a send to a new folder option?

I can send it to a specific folder. But I want it to make a new folder and add it into it. I despise making a new folder when I'm organizing multiple unsorted artists.

Programs to do this is ok as well but I'm not a fan..I've got alot running already.

THANKSSS! =D

Yes, you can download last version of W10 and do clean install, that usually gets rid of problems caused by upgrading. If your present W10 is activated you can even skip entering registration during install.

Microsoft to stop updates for XP SP2.

Microsoft this week will stop issuing security fixes for computers running the Windows XP operating system updated with Service Pack 2.

Companies can continue to get security updates for XP computers through April 2014 by upgrading to SP3. It's free. Testing and deployment is not trivial but can be automated, noted research firm Gartner. Or they can replace old XP units with new Windows 7 PCs, which Microsoft fully supports.

Microsoft typically issues security fixes, called patches, for freshly discovered flaws on the second Tuesday of the month.Click to expand...

A:We knew this was coming - now it is here: No more WinXP SP2 support

Your title is a little misleading Tom as it looks like XP's entire support life is over when in fact it's only SP2 so I'll edit it to reflect that.

So I failed to mention that my Memory is always running very high, and also that sometimes my computer is making a very strange almost "grinding" type noise. I have made sure that it is free of hair, dust, and dirt inside of it, and cannot understand what that noise would be? It is a fairly new PC so this is very troubling!

I am running Windows XP and have Microsoft Works 8.5 installed. When I use the word processor and such everything is fine but my situation calls for me to move documents at various times from word processor. I don't see any "SEND TO" options, so how is this done ? I realize this is very elementary but until you do it once, I simply don't know how to do this. Thanks ahead of time for any advice

A:Solved: simple task if I only knew how

You just want to send the file to someone/somewhere else? Like, in an email?

If you right click on the file in explorer (after saving any changes of course) there should be "Send to" option with a few options. Alternatively, if you're looking to email the file to someone, you could also manually attach it (or several files) to an email by either dragging them to a new email document (if you're using a mail client) or selecting the attach option in the email window and browsing for the files you want to send.

After working on issues for a week I'm wishing I had heeded the clean install advice I went from Vista Home Premium to Windows on a hp update I knew I wished things laptop Followed the directions precisely Didn't know that the Norton beta UAC I had set up would hose things up On the reboot after said it was done the hp setup manager DVD was supposed to be put back in Couldn't read it Couldn't read the win disk either Finally found where someone else had that problem Removing Norton UAC solved the problem without having to reinstall The OSD for the volume control disappeared but came back after update things I wished I knew I installed another one Then my wireless connection started dropping Just mine not my wife's It would stay sort of working and then when going to load another browser window nothing doing Tried all kinds of stuff Finally removed hp's quot wireless assistant quot which does nothing but put the radio tower in the notification area This after trying a bunch of different broadcom drivers with no luck Well it seems hp wireless assistant was the bad guy because I've stayed on for quite a while now Boot time is slow and I've followed some of the advice but it's still taking a seconds or more I read the event logs but they don't really tell me anything except it is taking too long Cleaned up prefetch once IE started opening second pages minimized and slammed up at the top of the display Had to 'reset' IE a couple times as advised and that worked Haven't removed any of the quot old quot directory stuff figured it's just taking up space Any new advice on reading logs or speeding up the boot would be appreciated Thanks for the Forum It's been a sanity preserver for sure

A:update things I wished I knew

Never too late for a clean reinstall!

Norton is some of the worst bloatware your WIn7 Upgrade is struggling against. The curse of Bloatware is that it can corrupt your OS just as badly when it is uninstalled.

Check your model's Support Downloads page and see how many of the model's apps that you like are there for download. Most all drivers are in the installer or come via Windows Updates, but see what is there in case.

Start collecting your program disks and installers which should be kept backed up in Downloads file.

Once you boot from the DVD and do a Custom Clean install with formatting, it will be like having a new computer.

Then save a Win7 Backup Image of your finished job externally and (if you want) in a Primary formatted partition, and you will never have to reinstall again.

A:Wish I knew the problem.. strange computer

One thing that I've encountered time and again with seemingly random problems is loose power connections. Especially if your PSU is modular, make sure that the power connectors are inserted until they "snap" into place.

The next step would be to assess RAM compatibility. Is your RAM specifically listed on the motherboard's QVL or on the Corsair website as being compatible with the motherboard?

Do you have the latest drivers for you hardware and OS. Also, if you don't have the latest BIOS and the info of later versions than you have states something like "improves system stability" you might consider updating.

Speaking of BIOS, does your BIOS version fully support your CPU?

Finally, you might want to test the RAM, one stick at a time, with Memtest, which is linked in my signature.

If nothing else, these will rule out some things until a BSOD expert shows up.

Click here to download ewido anti-malware - it is a trial version of the program.Install ewido. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.The program will now go to the main screen. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click updateThen click on Start UpdateThe update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. Then:Click on scannerClick on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin (do not open any folders or open the windows control panel while the scan is in progress). While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OKWhen it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save reportClick Save report.Save the report .txt file to your desktop. Now close ewido.Rescan with HJT and post a new log here together with the ewido log so that any remnants can be removed manually.

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

The "Aurora" vulnerability, patched on Tuesday, was reported to Microsoft on 26 August 2009. MS planned to patch it in February 2010.Microsoft today admitted it knew of the Internet Explorer flaw used in the attacks against Google and Adobe since September last year.Microsoft Knew of IE Zero-Day Flaw Since September

I posted a while ago about how my Dell Latitude wasn't recognizing the batteries anymore and everyone thought they sounded dead but I didn't think they were.

Turns out... they're not dead! They're fine BUT the whole thing is pretty touchy. I can press down the right side of the keyboard and get the batteries to show up and start charging but I can pick it up and it will stop recognizing them. There's definitely some kind of issue. I'm not the original owner and I have no shot in hell (or desire) at dealing directly with Dell.

So what kind of place would look at it and be able to fix it?

A:Just got call from someone claiming to represent MS Tech - knew CLSID

A CLSID is associated with a COM object in Windows and is unique to that COM object but not unique to a particular machine. In other words, for a given COM object in Windows 7, all machines will have the same CLSID.

Support Desk Scams: CLSID Not Unique

To my knowledge, MS would not ever call you.

Hi Patrickg355,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Protection of your data is a top priority for Dell. Unfortunately, technology phone scams have become prevalent across our industry. We would love for you to take a moment to help us stop cybercriminals by reporting the details about your interaction. Please complete this form. This will allow us to investigate further. Also, please read this Wiki which has more helpful data. Note, Dell would not call you unsolicited. The only time we would contact you would be through the DellConnect software or the Dell Support Center software. But only after you agreed to this within the software.
Thank you,
Amy
