I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have win 7 home prem & would like to remove desktop icons that I never use (from the desktop). These icons are: documents, libraries, control panel, my documents, desktop. I normally delete icons by right clicking on the icon & selecting "delete." However, when I do this to "my documents" it starts to delete the data not the icon. What is going on here? I'm now afraid to delete the any of the above because I don't want to loose the information. I tried using "personalize" from the desktop but it's no help.

Any help appreciated.

Wish I had a better title, but I wasn't sure how to word this.

Basically what's happening is I have 2 instances of Firefox (different versions and different folder locations) and one of the instances is not opening where it's icon location is.

Example Screenshot:
As you can see. The far left instance does not want to open where it's icon location is.
The far right version always does it.
Even if I unpin the currently working instance (blue/orange icon) to only house 1 firefox instance (grey/black), the grey/black instance will still not open like the blue/orange instance current does (in it's own icon).
Hopefully this isn't confusing for anyone. I searched for a few terms to see if anyone had this problem and nothing came up, maybe I wasn't wording my searches correctly.

Hopefully someone can give some insights.
Thanks.

Hi!
I have just re-installed my OS. After I installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 64 bit, I pinned it in my taskbar. The icon of the desktop shortcut looks good, but in the taskbar, this is how it looks:

How could I solve this problem?

A:The icon shows in taskbar as "unknown icon"

Hello barbu110 and welcome to Seven Forums.

It's possible that your icon cache became damaged or corrupt for some unknown reason. You could try rebuilding it and see what happens.

I use third party software to update and do other system functions so I don't need the Action Center icon nex to the clock, how do I get rid of it?

A:Remove the "action center" icon from the taskbar area near the clock?

The notification area is located on the right side of the taskbar by default, and it contains program icons that provide status and notifications about things like incoming e‑mail, updates, and network connectivity. When you install a new program, you can sometimes add an icon for that program to the notification area.

You can expand the notification area to view hidden icons

New computers often come with icons already in the notification area, and some programs automatically add an icon to the notification area during installation. You can change which icons and notifications appear in the notification area, and for certain special icons (called system icons), you can choose whether they show up at all.

You can change the order of the icons in the notification area, and the order of hidden icons, by dragging them to the position you want.

To remove or hide an icon from the notification area
Click the icon in the notification area and then drag it toward the desktop.

Unil this morning i could click on a little "up" arrow on the right side (not extreme right) of my taskbar to display a pop up list of my desktop icons. I could then click on the 1 i wanted. it was very convenient because i didn't have to close all my windows to see the icons. The arrow suddenly disappeared & everything became different & i don't know why. How do I get it back?

Hi Guys,

I have Firefox pinned to my taskbar, but when I run the program, it opens up another icon in the taskbar to indicate that it's running. The other browser I use does not do that. In fact, I do not remember Firefox doing that previously. It will just "underscores" the pinned icon on the taskbar to indicate that the program is running.

How do I stop Firefox from opening another icon when it runs? Please see image below:

Regards,
Andrew

A:Program shortcut opens another "running" icon in taskbar

Right Click on the Taskbar and select Properties. In the option for taskbar buttons make sure the setting is to always combine.

Recently ran into major problem with Word 2000 SR-1.

Whenever I work on -- or try to -- on a .doc file, at the bottom of the screen in the taskbar that lists the page number, line, column, there is a small "book" icon with a pen, and as this pen moves across the book, I cannot edit the text, and the blinking cursor disappears until it ( the pen & book) *finally* decides to quit doing whatever its doing.

It has sat there and "wrote" for over 20 minutes before stopping. I can save and exit a .doc file, but just as soon as I reload it, and type anything, the "pen" starts writing.

What can I do to turn this annoyance off? Until its fixed I cannot use Word2K.

A:Word2K Taskbar "Book" icon -- Major Problem

That icon is for grammar and spelling. Under the Tools menu click on Options and then Grammar and Spelling to view your settings. Maybe if you play with those settings you will figure out a way to edit your document. Hopefully I've pointed you in the direction you need to go but I don't know what the solution is.

Just bought a new Dell Inspiron 3000 (actually a 3847) and reinstalled Win 7 Professional. There is an icon at the far right of the taskbar for "My Dell" (it's a blue circle, outlined in white, with a white wrench inside). Right clicking on it brings up a list of Dell tasks (notification, checkup, backup, system info, support, settings and finally the overall My Dell program) but right clicking again does not bring up a list with properties, etc.

Cannot move or unpin it - cannot tell what it references, etc. Any ideas??

Some time over the last few weeks I lost the Speaker Volume control icon on my Taskbar (Normally on the right side near the digital clock). I don't know what I did to make it leave, but I was looking for it just the other day and realized it was gone! I went into my Control Panel to access the audio sliders, and when I checked the box to display the volume control icon on the Taskbar, a text box popped up telling me that I have to install it from my add/remove programs function. Well, I can not find the Volume Control icon function anywhere, including on my original Windows XP Professional installation CD. Can anyone tell me how I can re-install the speaker Volume Control icon on my Taskbar?

Thanks!

You know, the small icon that appears in your taskbar when connecting a USB device? It no longer shows up, so now I have to go to Windows Explorer and click "Eject" directly on the USB device. How can I have this icon re-appear?

It's the one that let's you select your USB device to "Safely remove device".

A:"Remove USB Device" Icon not showing up in taskbar

happened to me quite a few times on my laptop ...

if it is not just 'hidden', try this

Start, Run, paste this line and click OK:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

This will bring up the add remove wizard. When I did this, it actually put the icon back in my task bar as soon as I removed my USB drive.

The other day I tried to send an email Naturally I was quite surprised when Windows XP Pro told = + "My 99% Computer" Taskbar No + No SVChost Icon Virus? me quot Not enough memory quot I SVChost 99% + No Taskbar + No "My Computer" Icon = Virus? rebooted the computer Upon booting it back up I found that my taskbar was locked and in the lowest possible position nothing visible on it I did not set it this way I unlocked the taskbar but I still could not move it up I also noticed that the quot My Computer quot Icon was no longer on my desktop Upon opening task manager i found that one of my SVChost exe processes was taking up of my computer s resources Note that this is not a fake SVChost exe nor a non-essential one as windows shut itself down when I ended its task I booted the computer up in safe mode and all three of the same problems were there I was still able to open folders on my desktop so i managed to navigate to and use several diagnostic tools including Adaware Spybot McAfee Virusscan Stinger and the FixWelchia and FixBlaster tools all of which took an incredibly long time with SVChost slowing everything down None of these found anything except for Virusscan which found a minor trojan which I easily deleted The problem persists and the fact that it seems to have tried to stop me from accessing anything by removing quot My Computer quot and locking my taskbar leads me to suspect that some sort of virus is causing this If so it must be very new or very elusive to evade Virusscan and Stinger both of which I updated a little over a week before Anyone have any ideas nbsp

A:How to pin an "open folders" icon to Win8's taskbar?

Hi Skyzoomer,

it's very easy to do what you want. Here are the instructions.

Go to START and click on the arrow in the lower left part of the screen. Now you can see all the different installed programs etc. Scroll to the right and under the header "System" you can find an icon that says "Windows Explorer".
Rightclick on this icon and choose "Pin to taskbar".

Et voila! If you go to the desktopmodus you can see the pinned icon for Windows Explorer. Any explorer windows you open will be grouped 'in' this icon.

Hope this was helpfull.

A couple of weeks ago, I installed the software for a HP DeskJet 5940 photo printer that I purchased. Afterwards, a "Safely remove hardware" icon appeared in the taskbar.

None of the startup entries for the new printer are running in the background, so I don't know how to get rid of it.

I've tried following these instructions:

1. Right-click within the notification area, and then click Properties.

2. On the Taskbar tab, click Customize.

3. Select Safely remove hardware, and in the Behavior column, click Always hide.

but when I right-click on the icon, the only thing that appears is "Safely remove hardware".

I've gone into the taskbar properties and tried to do it that way, but it wants to hide all inactive icons, which is not what I want to do.

Any suggestions?

A:"Safely Remove Hardware" Taskbar Icon

Hi Frank,

For each system tray icon that you want to see, you also have to select the "Always Show" behavior - which is what I see posted at: http://www.tech-recipes.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=414#1213

Check the items on the Task Bar in the desktop it should be there that is why you do not see the option to pin to the taskbar.

My internet works fine, but I can't figure out why the red "x" is over my internet access. (I've uploaded a pic of the toolbar area) It doesn't show how many bars I have unless I click it. I use Windows 7 and this is a brand new laptop. Any ideas on how to get it to go away?

I'd appreciate it.

A:Red "x" over the internet access icon in taskbar

Hi Millie0513,

I'm guessing your laptop has a Wireless and a Wired network card (who hasn't these days? :)) Anywho, it might be showing that one of your network cards is not connected to anything, thus giving a misleading image of the Network view.

Are you able to connect to a network if you click it?

Could you please do the following:
Go to Start > Search.
Type "cmd" without the quotes > Hit ENTER.
Type in "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt" > Hit ENTER.

A logfile with your network cards/settings should've been saved to C:\ipconfig.txt. Attach this file to your next post.

This is the easiest way to get rid of the icon. You can right-click on the date/time in Taskbar system tray and select "Customize notification icons" option. It'll open a new window. Now look for GWX (Get Windows 10) entry in the list and change its value to "Hide icon and notifications" using the drop-down box.

Apply the changes and it'll hide the White Windows flag icon in Taskbar notification area.

If you want to get rid of It you need to uninstall update KB3035583 as that is the main part of the GWX Upgrade process. You may hide the notification for a while but the application is still running and the notification will return. There are other ways to disable the function through Task Scheduler but uninstalling KB3035583 takes care of most everything. It also depends on what your intentions are re: upgrading to W10. If you don't want W10 right away then you should get rid of it and if you have a reservation in you won't have much wriggle room when your number is up.

1.Get the WMP icon in your desktop. (start > all programs > right click on wmp icon in programs list > send to > desktop.)

2. Right click on it > properties >change icon > browse (to the icon you want)

3. Open wmp , now the icon is in taskbar. Right click > pin the program to taskbar

You are done.

WinXP (SP2)...

This may seem trivial to others, but:

I have several icons on the right side of my tray. I right-clicked on the taskbar and clicked "Properties". "Hide inactive icons" is checked. I clicked "Customize" and set certain icons to "Always show", "Always hide", or "Hide when inactive". In particular, I set the APC PowerChute icon to "Always hide". However, each time I re-boot the computer, it ALWAYS defaults to "Always show" and keeps showing in the tray. The other icons keep their settings.

Now...
Is there a registry setting where I can change that behaviour to "Always hide"?

Has anyone ever found a way to remove the blurring effect on the task bar? I've found numerous sites to remove the blur from the frames of the windows, but not a single solution to do the same for the taskbar. I've only been able to find themes that remove the "lines" in the transparency but not the blurriness. Is it simply impossible without paying for 3rd party applications? It seems like it should be such a simple task but every website I've searched has always lead to no answers, the closest I've found is this at deviant art, but even when using this and some transparent png and gif, it still is blurry. What gives? I have no idea, if anyone has done this successfully without windowblinds or something please let me know, it'd be greatly appreciated. I want to be able to see through the bar and read text behind it.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

A:[SOLVED] Trying To Remove "System Alert" Balloon That Directs To "virprotect.com"

Download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Save ComboFix to the desktop and please ensure that you disable realtime security/virus programs that monitors your PC while CF is running.

1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Copy and Paste the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log. Do not use Code or html unless asked for.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.

A while ago, ALL my htm and html file icons in Windows Explorer changed to white paper icons with the corners turned town.

I do not have this problem with any other icons--just htm and html.
I do not have this problem with other file managers, such as XYplorer or Shelless.

The problem is only htm and html file icons in Windows Explorer.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi guys. I noticed that in Win7, the applications in the new Quick Launch move if you run one of the applications in the "Pinned to Taskbar" section. For example, if I have Windows Explorer and Firefox next to each other and I click to open Windows Explorer, the Firefox icon will slide far to the right so that it's after the Windows Explorer task in the taskbar.

Is there a way to keep the new quicklanuch icons in Win7 in the same place, like WinXP?

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please refer to Microsoft's Online Safety article for tips on creating a strong password.

Do not change passwords or do any transactions from the infected computer until it has been cleaned.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Please re-enable your antivirus before posting the ComboFix.txt log.

A:Flashing systray icon - popup "System alert"

Yay! It's gone!

I got frustrated enough that I started flailing --
found the following files in \windows\system32

swxcacls.exe
swsc.exe
swreg.exe
SrchSTS.dll
Process.dll
dumphive.dll

It took a while to find them because their MODIFIED dates were all prior to their
CREATED dates. When I added that field to the display, it was clear that they all showed up at the time everything went south.

I also checked a bunch of stuff in HJT to fix. Don't know if that made any difference. But the icon is gone now.

I'm attaching an image of the files & dates.

This icon suddenly isn't showing up, so I have to shut down or risk damaging something to get my external USB devices disconnected from the system.

Is there a place in XP Pro that I can enable it?

A:Lost the "safely remove" icon in the system tray

Hello,

Attach the drive
Go to Start => Run and type in "devmgmt.msc" {without the quotes}
Locate the USB drive in 'Disk Drives'
Right-click => Properties => Policies tab
Check the radio button 'Optimize for performance'
OK to exit

How to: Remove system "Favorites" icon from Windows 7 desktop

A:Remove system "Favorites" desktop icon

I'm not really sure what this means.
How to: Remove system "Favorites" icon from Windows 7 desktop. What is a system Favorites icon? When you left click on this icon what opens?
If you have installed a icon on your desktop and no longer want it just drag and drop to recycle bin. This works most of the time. You can also right click on it and go to delete, this also works most of the time. Get back and let us know how thing are going.

I of "bars" icon Tray Meaning in System recently replaced an old Meaning of "bars" icon in System Tray Windows desktop with a new more powerful Windows desktop My old machine was wired to a Gigabit Ethernet router and so is the new one Here's the difference The new machine has wireless adapter and when I look in the Notification Area I see a quot bars quot icon On the old machine which did not have wireless I saw a quot wired connection quot icon in the Notification Area See attached screenshot When I first saw the quot bars quot icon I thought the new machine was actually using the WiFi connection rather than the much faster wired connection But after poking around I was convinced that traffic was going over the wire I would definitely prefer Meaning of "bars" icon in System Tray to see the quot wired Meaning of "bars" icon in System Tray connection quot icon in the Notification Area when the machine is using it But when I choose quot Customize quot I do not see the icon The quot bars quot icon is simply called quot Network quot I find that confusing What happened to the wired icon

A:Meaning of "bars" icon in System Tray

If you see the "bars" you are connected with wireless. It is also possible to be connected with both connections. You can click the "bars" icon and disconnect from the wireless, at which point you will see the little computer (wired) icon.

The bars will go up and down depending on signal strength. If you are connected via wired, disconnect the wireless by clicking the bars and choosing to disconnect.

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

Hello,
I got this problem today. Normally when right clicking on the "explorer" icon it shows shortcuts of folders that I added as well as frequently visited folders.
But now it shows nothing but two options: "Windows explorer" and "detach the program".
I tried to move new folders in but nothing was changed.
Please, what is my problem? How could I solve it?
Thank you!

A:"Frequent" and "attached" disappear from Explorer Icon

Problem solved!

Jump Lists - Reset and Clear All Items

Delete everything in these two folders:

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations

And then you can make new shortcuts as you want!

A:result of "Hijack This" / removing "www.myfunstart.com" homepage

do this to see what it gets rid of, then if you post a new log at the end we can see if anything is left

Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then

press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of

the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot

remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

then reboot &
download AdAware 6
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives"

,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL"

and "Scan my host-files"

then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized

processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use

at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it.

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

A boot manager I installed under Vista x64, and subsequently removed, has left some hidden files and folders on my system. I want to get rid of them. Attempts to delete them, even as Administrator, are blocked with a message of "You need permission to perform this action." Is there a way to remove these folders and files from my system.

A:Removing "system" file

Hello Eldiener,

You should be able to take ownership of the file and grant yourself full permission to then be able to delete it afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hey guys, now I have this very minor, but weird problem that I would like resolved on my computer.

As you can see above, my image for the "Show Desktop" Button will not show in the Quick Launch bar... how can I restore it? I tried Google, but all Google is showing me on how to make this icon again and drag it there... but I already have the icon, I just want the image restored.

I know this is very minor, but I am sorry I am not very good with all this.

Any help?

How do I restore the Safely Remove Hardware icon to the system tray? I've clicked into "Customize Notifications" and a folder titled Safely Remove Hardware is listed under Past Items. I've changed its "Behavior" next to the folder to Always Show, but the icon still doesn't appear in the system tray. Rebooting after making the change doesn't help. Any ideas?

When I downloaded the updated drivers for my hp scanner software, an icon appeared on my desktop and if I right click it to delete it my computer freezes. If I drag it to the recycle bin or any other folder it just duplicates it and it is still on the desktop. I can't find anywhere else where I could delete it from the registry for example or add/delete programs list. I can't rename it , to try to delete it, because of the freezing issue. I will never use it so It bothers me that its there. Any ideas?

I move files from anywhere to the recycle bin (clicking delete or dragging,) but the icon does not change. If I right-click the icon, "Empty Recycle Bin" is grayed out. Clicking "Refresh" does nothing.

Here's the odd part: opening the bin/folder or deleting files with the folder open will change the icon in the way that it should.

Emptying the bin changes back to the "empty" iicon as it should.

My OS is Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium.

Recently, via Windows updates, I accidentally DLed IE 9. After realizing the error, I went to Programs and Uninstalled IE 9. and now a back to IE 8.

Now, whenever I click on a Desktop shortcut icon to open any of the programs I ordinarily use, instead of the program opening, I get a screen that says: Open With, and then there follows a brief list of programs I have recently used.

This is driving me crazy!!! How do I get rid of the problem, and go back to opening programs in the usual manner [simply double clicking on the icon]?????

Thanks so much if you can help with this. This is so frustrating, and I will go completely mad if I can't get this fixed!

In Excel 2013 (running under Win 8.1) I have the "Light Shading" icon on the Quick Access Toolbar. I use it a lot to give cells a gray fill and to clear the fill in any cell(s). But the shade of gray that it produces is darker than I want - I don't think of it as "light". However, I can't find a way to change the shade that it produces. I suppose it's set somewhere in the Registry; but so far I can't find it.

Can someone tell me how to change the shade from Excel's default? Alternatively, is there a VBA routine that I could put in Personal.xlsb to do it? That would enable me to change the color and tint to anything at will simply by editing the code.

Thanks for any words of wisdom.

A:Solved: Change shade of gray produced by "Light Shading" icon

nope, just write your own function and choose your color.
I do not know the color codes, it's limited but there is difference

You have the following options:

interior.color or the interior.colorindex

You'll have to google and play around with the values

A:Solved: Powerpoint 2003 - Removing "Read Only" & Write CD-RW

Hi MCBride

If I understand what you're asking, the answer is you can't.

You cannot edit a presentation that's on a CD. What's there, on that media, is set in stone, if you will.
You can only edit the active file that's resident on your computer, that the PowerPoint software can access, and allow saves to. Then you can burn it to disc, after the edits are saved on your computer.

Once a file, be it pps, ppt, slide show or whatever is on the CD, well, there it is. You can only read it from the CD, not edit from the CD.

Does this help, or have I got your question wrong?

From Microsoft after submitting the Design Change Request (DCR) and Business Impact Statement

I was in Redmond last week and this issued was discussed in detail with the development team . We did figure that this is a change in the design /code that lead to the issue you are seeing . The team weighed the effort of investigating this further ; the
effort of changing the component code that has already being isolated verses a workaround for the issue that could be provided. The team felt that this request did not meet the set ( high) bar for taking in design change request for Windows 7 . Case notes
indicate there are some workarounds that have been work on by previous engineers who worked on this case with you. If not, the Dev team and me will be glad to work on the workaround by editing the scripts. With my request the Dev team will file this design
change request for the next OS release (the one after Windows 7) . At this moment I don’t know if this request will be accepted in the next release but if will certainly be discussed and a decision will be made.
Cause and Status

There is a change in code path /design from windows XP to Windows 7 that is  leading to this behavior
A request of design change was filled . The team weighed the effort of investigating this further ; the effort of changing the component code that has already being isolated verses a workaround for the issue that could be provided. The team felt
that this request did not meet the set ( high)  bar for taking in design change request for Windows 7 .

With my request the Dev team will file this design change request for the next OS release (the one after Windows 7) . At this moment I don’t know if this request will be accepted in the next release but if will certainly be discussed and a
decision will be made.

Workaround
One of the basic script workarounds is that , if we have a batch script that will attempt to access \\server\share that
should be mapped to z: then the expected behavior can be achieved with net use.  At the top of the batch script we can add the line: net use z:\\server\share
In the situation where we currently have a failed access, the script will work precisely the same.  If the user was in a functional situation then the added line will give the following error message: “System error 85 has occurred. The
local device is already in use.” However, the batch script will continue as before providing the expected functionality.
If this error message is not acceptable (although it will be hard to notice it because if we just click on a script it will flash the cmd window by quickly) then the output can be suppressed.  Using “net
use z: \\server\share 2> nul” will suppress any errors this command would
produce.

Hello, everyone.

I was playing Diablo 2 today and my Internet Explorer 6 icon on my desktop (icon available in desktop settings, not a shortcut) seems to have reverted to something from Internet Explorer 4 or earlier.

I've tried re-applying the Windows XP theme (this worked for me on the original Diablo on my old PC when the start button did something similar) but no luck. I'm good at computing (e.g. I can edit the registry easily, follow instructions, I know quite a lot about XP) but I've never had a problem like this before. I'm gonna have to ask for help on this one.

Screenshot.

Any help would be excellent thanks. Also, I've had a similar problem on another computer when after installing IE7 the icon disappeared and went to the default XP "white-page" icon. It needed a registry edit to fix it; are they fixed in a similar fashion?

Thanks.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in the right direction.

A:NO DESKTOP after booting up … & SYSTEM RESTORE "Incomplete" … & "Strange" Temp Files

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

Today an icon appeared on one of our user's desktop, called (not exact, i'm at home now) "Fw: Easter egg carvings". Looking at the icons properties, there is not any information - no date created, modified, accessed, no type of file, nothing. It will not allow itself to be moved, renamed, or deleted. I have tried SpyBot, Killbox, and the command prompt. It always says the file is in use or doesn't exist. Command prompt said "could not find". A dir command also showed nothing with that name listed.
fyi, the user has no email with such an attachment in any of her mail folders, and her AV is up do date and running. WinXP Home.

Thoughts?

A:Solved: Icon "Fw: Easter egg carvings" won't go away

FYI, This is how I fixed it: Created a new user account. Restarted in safe mode, as Administrator. Copied all items from the Desktop folder of the old user except the weird one over to the desktop folder of the new user. Restarted windows, logged in as new user, deleted the old user account.

Hello, recently I noticed the x's to close windows on my laptop have disappeared. It's happened to every program I use. The minimize and re size buttons are still there and the space for the x is there as well.

I'm using XP pro SP3.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

A:Solved: Close Window Icon ("x") is gone :O

Sorry, I just realized it was an error with Windows Blinds. Strange that it just came about randomly, I'd been using the same skin for months...
