Q: Programs closing and freezing frequently

Hello I ve been having difficulty with my laptop for a few months now It s running with Windows XP Media Center Edition For and Programs frequently freezing closing the past few months its been very slow to load up when I turn it on Firefox or Explorer when I rarely use it takes extraordinarily long to start up and it frequently crashes I have Photoshop and I generally have to close Firefox before opening it otherwise one or both will crash In general programs crash or freeze very often Sometimes they ll just close with no warning When I have folders open they almost always close with no warning My computer also isn t staying logged in to most sites my banking website has even said it doesn t recognize this computer a few times which worries me Selecting Restart inevitably takes forever before my computer actually restarts Pulling my computer out Programs closing and freezing frequently of Standby or Hibernation also can take forever Opening new programs is always an issue though If I dare to click anywhere after opening something new Firefox Photoshop Explorer etc it will freeze and sometimes cause the whole computer to freeze as well I Programs closing and freezing frequently regularly run and update Ad-Aware but if it finds anything it never seems to be much problem I have AVG free and Windows Defender running in the background all the time I had SpyBot but read a lot of conflicting opinions on it so I deleted it recently I used to have LimeWire and uTorrent but I hadn t used either in a long time so I deleted them as well after I started having problems If you have any advice I d love to hear it Thanks Here s my Hijack This log Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v Scan saved at PM on Platform Windows XP SP WinNT MSIE Internet Explorer v Boot mode Normal Running processes C WINDOWS system winlogon exe C WINDOWS system services exe C WINDOWS system lsass exe C WINDOWS system svchost exe C Program Files Windows Defender MsMpEng exe C WINDOWS System svchost exe C Program Files Lavasoft Ad-Aware aawservice exe C WINDOWS system spoolsv exe C WINDOWS system hkcmd exe C Program Files Synaptics SynTP SynTPEnh exe C Program Files Google Gmail Notifier gnotify exe C Program Files Windows Defender MSASCui exe C PROGRA Grisoft AVGFRE avgcc exe C Program Files HP HP Software Update HPWuSchd exe C Program Files Google Google Desktop Search GoogleDesktop exe C Program Files iTunes iTunesHelper exe C Program Files Google GoogleToolbarNotifier GoogleToolbarNotifier exe C WINDOWS system ctfmon exe C Documents and Settings Rebecca Compton Local Settings Application Data Google Update GoogleUpdate exe C Program Files HP Digital Imaging bin hpqtra exe C Program Files Common Files Apple Mobile Device Support bin AppleMobileDeviceService exe C PROGRA Grisoft AVGFRE avgamsvr exe C PROGRA Grisoft AVGFRE avgupsvc exe C PROGRA Grisoft AVGFRE avgemc exe C WINDOWS eHome ehRecvr exe C WINDOWS eHome ehSched exe C Program Files Google Google Desktop Search GoogleDesktop exe c Program Files Microsoft SQL Server Shared sqlwriter exe C WINDOWS system svchost exe C WINDOWS system mqsvc exe C Program Files Canon CAL CALMAIN exe C Program Files Hewlett-Packard Shared hpqwmiex exe C WINDOWS system mqtgsvc exe C Program Files HP Digital Imaging bin hpqSTE exe C Program Files iPod bin iPodService exe C WINDOWS system dllhost exe C Program Files HP Digital Imaging Product Assistant bin hprblog exe C WINDOWS System svchost exe C Program Files Mozilla Firefox firefox exe C WINDOWS explorer exe C WINDOWS system taskmgr exe C Program Files Trend Micro HijackThis HijackThis exe R - Preferred Solution: Programs closing and freezing frequently

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell Optiplex 330 which has a 2.0 dual processor with 4gb of ddr2 ram. I have windows xp installed and I have a video card that has 1024 mb of ram. I am unsure of the brand of video card or further specs. I bought it off of ebay some time ago.

My problem is that when I try to play streaming video it wants to freeze a lot. I have already given more space for the virtual memory on my computer: I think 4 to 8 gb and I have set my hardware acceleration way down but these changes haven't helped.

I can download and play movies fine, I only seem to have problems when playing streaming video like from or which directs you to sites like: putlocker, deditv, sockshare, loomba, etc. I have used other computers and they don't seem to have as much problems with this so I hope that somebody knows what I need to do to solve this problem. Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Freezing problems with streaming video

When you say freezing, do you mean just the video freezes, or the whole system? If its just the video, it could have something to do with your internet connection. Is the computer on wired internet or wireless?

So I recently started to overclock to boost performance out of my old cpu, core i3-530..I could manage 3.6 ghz at stock volt..with more volts, I have clocked till 4.07 ghz..I don't see any point crossing that barrier. Here's my concern..Is it safe to overclocked(say 3.6ghz) and then reset it back to default/stock frequently or rather set to a certain speed and keep it as it is..I am concern with longevity of processor and power consumption since I couldn't set the bios to increase or decrease the clock hertz as windows does at its default..

A:Overclocking and resetting to stock frequently

What voltage did you use to get to 4ghz? If we know that we can kinda say if its a safe day to day OC voltage. If your planning on running your system Overclocked all the time I have always kept speedstep/cool and quiet enabled to allow the cpu to down clock when idle to save on power and I have gotten 3+ years out of every chip I have overclocked while doing that.

A:Programs are slow to respond

Slower response indicates the issue of bad memory allocation which is related with multitasking.

Hi there,

My mouse cursor freezes once every ~30s for about 1~2s. It doesn't happen all the time, but I suspect it might happen because of the usage of postgreSQL, as I've seen 2 other people with the same problem who also used it.

I have tested another mouse, the problem persists. I've tried updating mouse/USB drivers as well, nothing helped.

My trackpad, however, doesn't stop working at any time.
Any ideas?

A:Mouse cursor freezing

Interesting how when you tested another mouse the issue persisted, but it works with the trackpad. Are both mice you tried (non-trackpad) wired or wireless?

Normally, 99.999% of the time I just shut it down completely but I'd like to know what "sleep" means?
Does that mean if I do so, upon opening the lid it'll be where I left it at?
I notice in Control Panel>Power Options>System Settings whether its on battery or plugged in , it shows sleep.

A:Choose What closing the lid does?

I recommend sleeping the laptop if you are gonna use it after you close it within the next few hours. Otherwise shut it down.

So, I recently bought an Asus UX31a running windows 8(in may) and it was working perfectly until a couple months ago. The only browser that works is internet explorer, which is disgusting (I miss Google Chrome) and several programs such as Adobe reader, Google drive, steam and visual studio either lag for about 5 mins each whenever I want to use them (or click something in them), or I have to close them with the task manager because they aren't responding...(This includes when I want to open pdf documents in internet explorer.

I've run several virus checks with ESET smart security which hasn't ever found any viruses...

It would be a great help if anybody could help me find what the problem is.

A:Multiple programs are stopping to work, also, I don't appear to have had or ever have a virus.

Try using a new Windows Restore point. This may not work because of "it was working perfectly until a couple months ago"... It is most likely caused from a stubborn malware infection other than a virus

Hello, I'm David, and I am having problems with packet loss. I usually use internet to watch videos, play some games and what not, but recently I started experiencing lags. I googled it up, and then tried to see if my pc had packet loss (pinged -t). I had a 6% packet loss. Then I tried it on my other pc (it is connected to the same router and is half a meter away from other one). It had 0% packed loss. Then I remembered that recently I downloaded some programs and stuff on the pc with the packet loss. Could it be the cause of my packet loss? Thank you to all who at least read my delema.

A:Internet packed loss. (Could it be a programs fault?)

What Router brand and model are you using?
Are you connected wired or wireless?
Are you connected 100mbps or 1.0 Gbps.
Have you upgraded the firmware on the router lately?
Also have you upgraded the drivers on the PCs network cards?
Have you ever power cycled the power on the router or modem?
Any switches connected to the router? If so, try a different port.
Have you tried a different port on the router?

Packet loss in a router means the router started degrading on the ports side.
Device could be overheating or just have duff ports (bad)
In your case you can also.

1. Backup config settings in the Router
2. Do a Factory Reset will wipe all prior settings out
3. Restore Backup config settings in the Router

If all was tried you should consider replacing the router only as option though.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505-GS6000 and was looking to upgrade my ram so my computer would run faster. one reason I am doing this is an online game I used to play all the time wont play very well, the fps is good but after about 4 mins of playing the game starts freezing every 4-5 seconds. my question however is while looking for ram to put in my computer I found a Corsair 8GB PC8500 DDR3 1066Mhz SODIMM Memory - 2x4096MB or Patriot PSD316G1333SK Signature Laptop Memory Kit - 16GB (2 x 8GB), PC3-10600, DDR3-1333MHz, 1.5V, CL9, Non-ECC, Unbuffered. I wasnt sure which would be better for my laptop an give it the best speed. also what does the Unbuffered mean? I was also wanting to make sure the Ram memory kits would fit in my laptop. Thanks

Ran Ccleaner
Removed old out of date antivirus installed new one, updated it, ran it and removed 1 threat
Turned off startup programs
Adjusted appearance for best performance

Didn't do anything major and nothing I wouldn't normally do.

well the first step is making sure you dont have a ton of programs running in the system tray (next to the clock.).
If you could click the windows button, right click computer, click properties, and tell us what is written down in system, it would give us a better idea of the caliber of PC we are talking about here.

I get my internet through GVEC which is the electric company in my area. I live out in the country so this is the best I can get. It seems like every hour I lose internet access and I have to reset the router and or disable my NIC and re-enable it. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, I'll lose connection. I normally thought it was either the ISP or the router, but it still broadcasts wireless internet even while my computer doesn't have internet access which has RJ-45 connection to it. I replaced my NIC thinking it was that, but it still happens. I even have updated drivers. Can anyone shed some light on this or know what's going on to help me solve this issue?

Hello, First of all thanks to anyone who can help.

Here is my problem: I just built my brother his computer for Xmas and everything is brand new and the computer is "working". Yet every time I start a game or try to get the system rating the comp either freezes, restarts, or blue screens. I've updated the video card half a dozen times and It says that it is updated yet problems still occur.

Here are the specs

OS- Windows 7 64bit
Video card- AMD Radeon HD 6900
Processor- AMD 6 core 6100
Motherboard- 990FX Sabertooth
Ram- 8gs
Power- antec 900w
HD- 2 terabyte

A:Drivers are updated, but PC keeps freezing

Although that processor is supported by the motherboard, it's possible that the BIOS is an older version, pre-FX.

I have a sony vaio VGN nw350f that keeps freezing while playing online videos and games. When it freezes the sound will keep playing but at a slower, louder, more annoying speed. Sometimes when I restart or turn on the laptop after shutting it off it will tell me "Operating system not found" or just blink _ at me. Don't know if these symptoms are related.

I tried downloading both intel and sony display drivers where at first I was able to install, now when I try to install any of the drivers it says I don't have the right drivers for the right OS.

OS: windows 7 x64

edit: I have already restored the HDD to factory default.

Hi all,

I have been checking some stats of my computer to run some of the new games, and to my surprise I have found that although 4 x 1024mb sticks have been installed in the computer only 3338mb's show up. I am using Win XP. I was expecting for 4gb to be present.

So is there a windows program that will allow me to test each ram stick without me having to go in to the computer pulling them out individually?

Thanks in advance.

A:Programs to check bad mem sticks?

Because XP is a 32-bit operating system it can only recognize and utilize 3.25 gigs of RAM. It takes a 64-bit operating system lo to recognize and utilize a full 4 gigs of memory or more.

First I would advise you never use a registry cleaner unless you know exactly what it is removing, they can do more harm than good.

My first thought is that your hard drive may be failing so please follow this guide to run the manufacturer's diagnostics.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

Seagate, Maxtor & Quantum:

Western Digital:

Toshiba Fujitsu:

If you have a Toshiba hard drive I would suggest the use of the diagnostics from the Seagate link as this will work on all makes of drive and on any OS.Click to expand...

Freezing, crashing, etc It reminded me of what would happen when a game cartridge for the older consoles like snes went nuts I took a screenshot of it http img imageshack us i gpuproblem jpg After this i decided to completely exit wow and began loading this screenshot up but my computer froze It also froze completely at one point during the game and did not blackout But that was only once I also got some brief message from my taskbar about quot AMD recovery successful quot or something along those lines I began to suspect it was the processor I m leaning towards the GPU I ll run some more diagnostic tests with MW at the moment and see if this problem would persist Could this issue be the same as the ones from Newegg s reviews for this gpU I Remember reading the reviews as I was about to purchase this card and there were a few posts about their gpu not working properly with wow EDIT After running mins of mw there were no problems However when I would stream a video the similar issue arises After the blackout this is the message quot Display Driver AMD driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered quot nbsp

A:I think my GPU is broken? Freezing, crashing, etc

imo i would try this first try using a program like driversweeper and remove all AMD display drivers then just download the newest drivers for your card and install. Also note that lowering the clock speeds of the card in ati overdrive may help to as well as increasing the fan speed of the video card.

Please say this can be fixed easily...I'm not the most technical person on the planet!

Hello all,
I have been grappling with my first home build for about two days now, everything seems to work beautifully except the system keeps freezing up entirely, only way to recover is to reset.I would think it was a windows issue except that the first time it happened was when I was working in the BIOS, before I installed windows. Upping the NB voltage from factory 1.1 setting to 1.2 seems to reduce frequency but not fix. Specs are below, thanks for any insight!

AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE 3.4 OC'd to 3.5
ASrock 870 Extreme 3 6gb/s USB 3.0
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
WD 1TB Caviar Black 7200 RPM 6gb/s
Sapphire Radeon HD5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB PCIE 2.0
LG 10X Blu-ray
XION Gold series 90+ 700W PSU

A:New/first build having problems with freezing

Have a look in Event Viewer and see what it reports for the crashes.

When you say the first time it frooze was before you installed windows, this suggests a hardware error.

This will most likely be the RAM or your graphics card.

Try running without the graphics card (if you have onboard graphics to use) and also try running with just one memory stick then swap to the other if no better.

I appreciate all your components are probably new but even some new stuff is faulty.

What OS are you using.

Programs do not use much RAM? [SOLVED]

My programs do not use as much ram as i would like them to. For example Mafia 2 when running only uses 800Mb out of 4gb ( around 2400 available.) It is also the case for allmost every memory-intensive program, i am running in 32 bit. would switching to x64 help? or is there a software or tweak available to help ? Any advice is much appreciated.

A:Programs do not use much RAM?

You cna download a program called "Cleanmem" that will go throught he programs in the taskmanager and work out what programs are not currently being used and reduce the memory usage that they are using and INCREASE the memeory for programs that are running but to be honest if you are not seeing a lag in your program it should be fine.

If you have 2400Mb of memory availabel and its only using 800Mb then the program only requires that memory to run properly. As long as you have free memeory then if the program requires more emmeory if will use it.

Cleanmem is a free program.

Is there any program that can do this for me?
Please post a link of a program that can do this in a reply

Please Reply ASAP

Sorry is you do not understand, im not good with my english

A:Is there programs that copies your whole hard drive

You could obviously have your personal files on the PC, but you'd never be able to (without much headache!) run the OS on your pc thats been installed on your laptop.

You would have the same files to begin with, but without copying them backwards and forwards nonstop you really couldn't keep the files the same.

A much better idea if you need the files available on your PC and laptop is to purchase a external drive, and move all your personal files onto that - That way you just plug it into whatever computer your using and you have them to hand.

I got around the problem myself by using a 1GB drive in my PC, and and allowing my laptops access to this drive, so regardless of which laptop I use, or the PC I'm always using the most up to date documents. I chose this because keeping them all updated across several computers turned into a nightmare in the end. This solution suits me much better.

Any suggestions on the next path to take?

A:Toshiba Satellite A105 freezing!

Do a hard drive and RAM test on the machine.. you will probably need to download something and put it on a CD to do these, I Suggest Hiren's Boot CD. Very helpful tool for testing hard ware on computers..

You will obviously need another computer(Working properly..) To download, and burn a copy so you can use it on the machine.

If you get Hiren's Boot CD, to test the ram go to "Dos Boot" then select Testing Tools, select RAM Test (#1), Mem Test(#1). Let it pass a few times, best to just leave it overnight to see if there are any errors..

For the Hard Drive test, select Hard Drive Tools, go to Hard Disc Sentinel, it will tell you the type of hard drive in the machine, then select the proper test for that hard drive. Do a long/extended test on it, and wait for results..

Is that PCMICA red in color or blue in color on white? I use the red one Version 5 never game me any issues from Belkin. You might want to disable the Belkin wireless tool and use WZC from XP. That's what I had ended up using. Belkin one seems to freeze up more. So go into the Belkin tool and tell it you don't want it to manage the wireless but setup your wireless info and encryption into it and then tell it you want to use WZC. You could force it not to load also. Check services or Startup Manager. I won't recommend disabling any features of the PCMICA card. Though go into the BIOS and disable any onboard wireless though.

The symptoms you describe could have a number of causes, but I doubt the power supply is the problem.

I just built this new box for gaming about 3-4 days ago, had all the parts shipped in from and have been having problems with random freezes. No BSOD's at all, just freezing of the screen, no mouse movements, and I cant even turn numlock off on the keyboard. I have ran memtest, HD tests, virus scans, spyware scans, and have checked the temps of the CPU GPU and MB. All temps are normal (CPU avg. 25-30 degrees Celcius at idle, GPU 50-55 degrees Celcius at idle, and MB 18-25 degrees Celcius at idle). I cant seem to figure out the problem. Any input would be appreciated.

Also occassionally playing WoW, my keyboard and mouse acts like it gets unplugged and plugged back in from time to time. Mouse is plugged into hub on keyboard.

What is the make and model of your video card and did you update the drivers? If not try the following steps:

1. Download Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper (both have free versions; make sure the version will work with your OS) to your desktop screen and install.

2. Download the latest diver(s) for your video card but don't install them.

3. Uninstall your video card drivers and reboot your PC into Safe Mode. Run Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper. If it doesn't find any video card drivers that is quite okay.

4. Reboot and install new video card drivers.

* Also unplug mouse from keyboard hub. What are the results?

Hi, I'm having this problem with my windows 7 OS Lenovo Ideapad Y450 laptop.
when i try to connect to the internet at home, it connects and before i could go into the internet browser, it drops again. this continues to happen for many times until i couldnt do anything with it.
what's the irony is that i have other laptops (vista OS) at home running with no problems , and when i am in school, my Lenovo laptop connects perfectly. no signs of dropping of connection at all.

A:Windows 7 connection drops frequently for no reason

get this free program called inSSIDer and run it on the laptop. Walk around your place and see where the drop it starts and ends. Then you need to buy a Repeater and place that in the dead drop zone. The repeater is 100% wireless no need for hard-wire cable from the router to it.

In the meantime make sure your router is reset and also have the latest firmware for it.

sounds more like a network issue than anything... check for conflicts and update network drivers if necessary. i don't understand why CPU usage is so high but perhaps a network protocol or service is hogging res? download process explorer to get a better picture of what's going on why the streaming is running.

My computer keeps freezing roughly 10 minutes after starting up every time. It always starts up fine but after running for around 10 mins it freezes. Sometimes when it freezes I can just about move the mouse pointer around but it is super slow and laggy. I can't get up the task manager or start menu etc after it has frozen.

I am running windows XP on a very decent system (Quad core, 4gig Ram etc). I also have a 1TB harddrive and have recently used up quite a lot of space on that in a relatively short space of time (I have been editing variouse films). Could this have something to do with it? The drive is partitioned into two 500gb sections. One section has about 90gb left and the other has about 350gb.

Does anyone have any idea what could be happening here? I have never seen a computer do this before.

At less than two years old my custom built PC has always been in perfect needed Computer & crashing, freezing help condition but recently I ve experienced problems with crashing and freezing The first problem s started around three months ago when on plugging an ipod in to the USB drive the ipod would break and have to be rebooted in disk mode and wiped to work again tested with separate Computer freezing & crashing, help needed ipods At first I thought it may be some sort of virus but after running scans with AVG I found my computer was clean which led me to think it could be a power fault Then around a month ago my computer started to randomly crash shutting itself down immediately while in use then Computer freezing & crashing, help needed on restarting it would crash again When left turned off for a longer period of time a few hours it would start up again as normal and work until the next crash when it would have to be left switched off again but as my computer case has a thermometer I knew this was not due to overheating The crashes began to occur more and more Computer freezing & crashing, help needed regularly at very most minutes after the computer was turned on so I explored as many options as I could think of I opened up the case and hoovered inside I cleaned the fans I deleted all temp files and temp internet files I did a disk cleanup I ensured there was sufficient RAM After all this my computer STILL isn t working properly the crashes have stopped and I have been unable to check it with an ipod but instead it freezes completely frozen - the cursor will not move music playing stops Ctrl Alt Delete doesn t work etc randomly Sometimes immediately after logging in to my work station the computer will freeze and need to be restarted whereas at other times - generally when nothing or only a single program is running - it will stay on for longer without freezing an hour or more Could this be a power supply problem If so how could it be fixed and if not what is wrong with my computer I am not technically minded so I may be missing something obvious here but I m at a bit of a loss and any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated Chloe nbsp

By any chance do you still have the minidumps created by your earlier crashes? You can find them in C:\windows\minidump. If so, please zip them in a single file and post them here with your next post.

Secondly, do not rely on single AV solution, I would also advise you to scan your system using online scanning of ESET (it will ask you to download a small ESET scanner and install it).

Download Secunia's PSI and run it; it will let you know if you have any security related issues with your installed software and advise you to update (if needed be).

Check your system's logs, by going to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, then to Event Viewer, check all logs, specially check if there are logs with red/yellow tags; if there are any, please give as many details you can get from there.

Also give us your system's specs, and OS details (e.g. which service pack you've installed etc., you can check that by opening my computer, then going to help menu and clicking on about windows).

i bought this set a few days ago: Asus P7P55D-LE, Intel i7 2.8GHz, Ati Radeon HD 5770, 4g RAM and Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. It has been "freezing" all the time and ive been starting to think its my hard drives. But know its been starting to reloading my BIOS like making me have to put the setups again. When it freezes nothing works and when i try the num lock on my keyboard it doesnt go on and off. It freezes randomly, some times when i play a game or sometimes just on the desktop without doing anything. If i leave the computer on and go to school it's frozen when i come back.Pls someone help me? . Im kinda regretting my purchase.

E: And when it freezes it requires reboot.

A:Computer freezing and accasionaly reloading BIOS

First thing first, the computer is in Warranty; so you should call the system's supplier and ask them to fix it.

Secondly, please go to Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools and open Event Viewer. You need to carefully scan Event Viewer's Windows Log (you need to click on it to open sub-tabs containing Application, Security, Setup, System logs etc. Please carefully examine all of them and let me if you see Red/Yellow Tags events with their Event ID Number and other details related to processes/files etc.

In the last six months or so my computer has been experiencing mounting performance problems mouse function Frequently losing I have the feeling that it is a combination software hardware issue but the primary symptom right now is the mouse so I thought I d start here I really noticed it when I started using Facebook apps They run very slowly and graphics are herky-jerky I would periodically get a message saying that the Windows memory paging area was insufficient and was being reset After a while I just reset it manually to a larger size but that seemed to cause problems itself so I let it go back to an automatic setting Then the mouse started to freeze and lose power occasionally Now it s happening every few minutes What usually happens is that first the cursor freezes then the mouse appears to lose power When I unplug it and plug it back in it comes back to life Originally assuming Frequently losing mouse function that this was a memory or driver problem I tried a installing and running a new anti-malware program I was using AVG switched to Avanquest on the theory that maybe a new program would find something different b running CC Cleaner c defragging d disabling a bunch of unnecessary stuff--well in fact everything ultimately-- on the start menu e uninstalling the mouse driver and reinstalling it An additional problem that makes diagnosing this difficult is that Task Manager doesn t work No matter how it is launched the only pane it will display Frequently losing mouse function is one that lists my account and offers the option of disconnecting it I m running Windows XP with a Celeron Frequently losing mouse function processor of some sort I ve thought about buying some more RAM but don t want to if the computer has some mechanical problem a dying mouse port or some kind of sneaky virus I can t seem to find Help Edit I have now taken an old mouse off another computer and hooked it up to a different port So far that seems to have solved the mouse problem although I don t know if the issue is the mouse or the port They have different socket configurations so I can t test the port I still have the Task Manager issue though nbsp

I bought a cheap as chips mouse because I wanted a light-weight USB type. I have disconnected this as it tends to drop-out much as you described. Yes pulled out the round purple DIN plug one from the draw and use this now as I couldn't be bothered with the new light-weight one (had to find the mouse pad too), keyboard too is the green round DIN plug and not USB. :suspiciou
I bought a subscription to DriverAgent and this was the best thing I found to update my drivers (as the computer I have is 100% recycled / unwanted and I don't have the XP boot disc to get free M/S driver updates) from as recommended by :approve:
Also try not putting the computer into Hibernation all the time as this fills the temp.files folder slowing production / indexing

Is your RAM new as well? Asus makes great boards but they are quite well known about being very picky about the RAM installed on each and every model of motherboard they make.

For each board model they have a recommended vendor list and the acceptable version for each memory manufacturer's inventory. For example Corsair makes several offerings but not all Corsair will be recommended for a particular motherboard model even if said RAM is DDR2 and it matches timings and voltage. Is this clear?

A:PC randomly turns off frequently without warning

Well, this generally happens for 2 reasons:

1.) High temperatures. Check your GPU and CPU temperatures and ensure that they are within their rated / acceptable limits.

2.) Power surge and lack of power protection device. Recently I removed my UPS and connected the PC to a cheap surge suppressor. I had exactly the same issue as you are having now.

I've been having problems with my Sony Vaio VGN-AR605E laptop recently. Had it for a couple years no problems, switched from Vista to XP about a year ago, no problems there. It also freezes up when I try to add music to my Itunes library. Sound still works and I can still move the cursor on screen. Nothing works but turning it off manually then turning it back on. Hi, I have an annoying little (or maybe big, its hard to tell with PC stuff) problem. Every so often my system will just freeze on me (and when it does the HDD light is off constantly). There seems to be nothing I can do to fix the problem other than hit the reset button. There is no set pattern to the problem as sometimes I will be not even using my computer and I will come back to it and its frozen up. I tried a stress test last night using BurnIn Test which showed everything working just fine. I've used Tuneup Utilities to fix my registry and check the HDD for errors but the problem persists.

My system is GA G33M-DS2R with Intel Core 2 duo (E4500) 2.20GHz and 4GB RAM, 64 bit Windows 7. Any ideas? Anyone?

PS. I tried to attach the latest .dmp file but the file size was too big, any help?

Yesterday, my brother asked me to look at his computer because he couldn't connect to the internet. I took a look and realized he had viruses and the best solution would be to reformat.

I had an extra hard drive that was larger than his so I went ahead and just installed that one instead. Now, I can connect it to the internet and everything but when I do it keeps freezing.

He has an old system that my cousin built like 8 years ago. The hard drive he had was only 20 gigs and the one I just replaced it with is 250 gb. Is there some compatibility issue that I'm not getting or something? Or could there be a virus in the RAM? I thought this would be an easy deal, but its taking me all day.

Please shed some light.

A:New hard drive freezing

Take out that old 20GB out..
Install the 250GB
Go into the BIOS and see if the BIOS can see the 250GB. Most likely it can't but don't worry about it. When you install a fresh copy of Windows you need to partition that 250 into either 50GB for the OS on C and D and E you need to see how large you can make the second drive if you not then you need to have D and E partition form that 250GB.
Install Windows OS XP.

We will need to know more about your system... Brand and model, or motherboard and configuration.

Strange problems that sometimes work. Replace the CMOS battery CR2032. Removing the heat sink to remove and replace the thermal past with the thinnest possible layer... as too much thermal paste acts as an insulator.
Others have had problems with the OCZ Stealth in higher speed units. Works well in normal computer installs, so you might want to try a test with a different power supply that is not OCZ and Not Antec... Perhaps Seasonic, FSP Group, Corsair...

The interesting thing is that during these 15 seconds only my display freezes while everything else works normally. For example if I am playing a Shooter Game and my display freezes, I am still able to shoot guns and move my character during this freeze, but the screen is simply frozen.

Here are my computer specifications:
Processor: 2.33 ghz Q8200 Core 2 Quad
Ram: 4Gb DDR 2
Video card: Nvidia xfx 9600 512 mb 256 bit
Supply: 350 Watt
Hard Disk: 350 GB
OS: Window Vista Ultimate 64 bit

If you have any information to help me fix this issue, please share.

Additional Details
Already updated with the latest drivers, and recently formatted and reinstalled windows.

Well im not pro, but try to install programs for cleaning your pc from errors like TuneUp Utilities, AusLogic BoostSpeed, CCleaner...Maybe you got virus in pc, so try to scan it. These are the basics. And if problem still exist and no one can help you, you can try to reinstall system.

My computer has been freezing since I got it, I think there may be a problem with the RAM. Maybe the voltages or frequencies or something are off, how do I go about checking if the RAM is good?

A:Computer keeps freezing!

You have not given us the hard drive brand and model, or the memory brand and type. And the age of your system, hard drive, and memory might be useful... as would the power supply specs.

Have you looked in your Device Manager for any error flags?

With a problem like this it is sometimes difficult to know where to start.
I would download and run the free Memtest86 if it will run that long... It takes about four hours or seven passes (which ever is longer) to know if your memory is good. But it is important to rule out memory as a cause.

I did my first build a few months ago and recently it has started freezing, at first it was only occasionally but today it happened 6 times in a row shortly after startup. I cleaned all my fans cause they were a little dusty and that took my GPUs temps from 46C to 39C, my CPU temp is around 55C with the cores fluctuating between 50C and 55C. Smartfan says my System temp right from startup is 103C which seems impossible considering the time and the fact that I have 4 huge fans and an almost entirely mesh chassis. The OS is a little sketchy, my friend gave me a burned DVD and said he copied his, I dont know about it though, he may have downloaded it. Please help with this, I think its probably a software issue but I am not sure.

A:Pretty new computer keeps freezing

You might want to inspect your heat sink and cpu for coloration due to heat...
Otherwise, you possibly have too much or too little thermal past, or a failing CPU fan.
You simply have to respect the Smartfan... It is not all that acurate, but even "close enough" is a worry at those temperatures..

If thermal paste is not too thick (acting as an insulator) nor too thin (inadequate heat transfer), then CPU fan is such a likely suspect that I would replace it and see if the temp specs change.

we need some more information, such as PC specs, does it only do it on movies, it could be a simple thing like a missing or bad codec or a memory error.

I was playing Oblivion on the default settings when I realized that I could play on a higher resolution because I have a good graphics card.
It was going fine for a while yet the last time I tried to play the game kept freezing on me.
I tried lowering the resolution and graphics but to no avail it still freezes.
I'm kinda confused now.
If it helps just recently I had Roxio on my computer and it refuses to uninstall properly. Everytime I start my computer an error comes on screen saying I need to run Roxio setup.exe which is complete Bull. I doubt this is connected to my video problem but Im not positive.

Anyway my main problem is the freezing of video during gameplay of Oblivion.

Can anyone help?

A:Computer freezing in Oblivion game

I solved (most of) my Oblivion lockups by editing Oblivion.ini, lowering iThreads and iNumHavokThreads values. Apparently the engine not that well multithreaded.

As for Roxio, you might be able to disable that startup thing with msconfig.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1318.

When I try to open programs, they will either not open at all or they will have a spot in the taskbar but there is no window open.

For example, itunes will not open at all.
I suspect a virus, so I've downloaded some programs from my other laptop (CCleaner as one) and when I open setup, the program will be in the taskbar but there is no window open, so it won't install.

Any suggestions?

Edit: When I turn it on, it will go past the Dell loading screen and then the screen will turn black for a very, very long time, then it will get past it and turn on.

There was also a time where something similar to the "welcome screen" (of vista) would show up but it would be gray/black.

It also takes a very long time to get into safemode.

A:Some Programs Won't Open

Can you boot to Safe Mode?
If so, install and run MalwareBytes or other antispyware, and antivirus software in Safe Mode. Many will not run, but some will do a good job.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 running Vista Home Premium and it's running ridiculously slow and it keeps freezing!
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz
2.00GB RAM

I have no idea what's wrong with it; I've done scans using Avira, CC Cleaner and Ad-Aware and they've found nothing. I have also done a hijackthis scan and deleted a couple of items, but it didn't help. The laptop is fairly new, I got it in March of 2008 (last year).

The only thing new I have recently downloaded is BitTorrent.

Please help!

A:Computer Freezing/Restarting randomly

You have some serious issues here:

1. My mobo is only held on by 2 screws
2. My CPU is mounted pretty snug, but during mounting the one corner clip/button that you push down broke off

Why is the motherboard held by only 2 screws? Where are these 2 screws positioned? Near the CPU or I/O panel?. A "pretty snug" CPU HSF (Heatsink/Fan) is not snug at all. Is the CPU socket fitted with 1 pin or 3 pins?

Try replacing your power supply for test purposes
