Q: Exchange server for home use: help?

Hi I recently aquired a Dell poweredge c box onto which I ve had server and exchange installed I ve for home use: help? server Exchange been quoted to have the box installed on my home network but I m running out of budget so I d like to have a crack at it myself and hopefully pick up some knowledge along the way I have a simple ish home network - most of which is either wireless or wired through the mains power network The Dell server has NIC but I have another I can install - I m told I need I m at a loss as to know where to start ie how to plug it all in and from then how to configure it all I m told the server needs to sit in the DMZ this true Exchange server for home use: help? If so should I fit it with AV software recommendations here please Also the box is noisey and might therefore live in the garage and need to be accessed remotely from another terminal in the house This possible Could I get away with cabling the server into the modem router via the mains electricity route or better still via a wireless router I have sat upstairs in a cupboard What would be really useful is if someone who has carried out a similar installation can offer advice tips pitfalls etc Also if I could be pointed in the direction of some kind of Exchange home-user for complete s guide that too would be very useful nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First, go to Dell and download ALL the available drivers for that model Service Tag. They also have pretty decent setup instructions.
This system is not all that different from what you are used to... so do not be intimidated with it because it is "new" to you. Simply start out slowly, and become comfortable with how it works... add and remove as needed, but slowly. Don't add the second NIC until you know why it is needed.
The noise is caused by a high speed, rugged power supply that is designed to run 24 hours without interruption. You can replace that power supply with a quieter model that will work just as well, but may not have the 3-year long life of the current one. But yes, it is often useful to have another terminal at your desk IF you can control the dust and heat in the garage.
You will likely need more instruction than can be posted here, but there are plenty of good ideas available with a Google search.
Your thinking on this project is very good, however.
One thing I would do is call Dell support, and ask them to send you a copy of the install disk that came with that model. It will have the latest service packs. But all other drivers will only be available via download.

Is it possible to use exchange to pull in web based emails (aol, hotmail) and then deliver those to outlook clients on my home network. I do not use a domain (use peer to peer) but could do if required.

Any help greatly appreciated.

EDIT - I would like these emails to be treated like regular pop3 emails, i.e not having the usual IMA in Outlook trappings such as deleted emails appearing with a line through etc...

A:Help with exchange Server on Home Network and IMAP

To cut a long story about Domain Controllers, Catalogue Servers, Active Directory, DNS, WINS, Windows Server edition, IIS.... short.

The answer is No.

Think of this:

If Mr A sends an email ([email protected]) to Mr B ([email protected])

The mail goes to HOTMAIL.COM and is authenticated at Hotmails email server. Not yours.

How could it possibly go to your mail server when hotmail have the domain (domain as in Domain Controllers/Networking/AD - not web domain) name ?

Exactly, it cant.

You should just configure POP forwarding from your chosen web based email to Outlook and stop all this nonsense about Exchange for a Home Network.

Hello everyone,

I am setting up a home computer lab from scratch using a single server with windows server 2008 r2, I am planning to use this to set up exchange server 2010 and an office communications server 2007 r2. I was wondering if anyone had any tips hints and comments about this. I am primarily looking for instructions or a guide to make the set up process easier current the only decent source I have is :

beyond this I was wondering what I need to set up.

Here is basically what I want to set up:

office communicator features
exchange server features
online exchange server access

The purpose of this is purely for fun/educational purposes really, the kick here is if I manage to get this working over a hamachi network, but before all that I just need to set these features up.

A:Help with basic exchange server / home network question

You probably don't want the security headache of hosting an e-mail server locally. You can go through g-mail and one of their hosting services and set up a domain and accomplish everything you are after without the security headaches.

If you want to setup and in house mail server you need and IDS system running on your network and be able to understand what it is telling you. If you have a mail server it will get hacked and you need to know when and what to do about it.

As for the file sharing install a VPN router to get remote access to your network.

The above config will nat to You can't static NAT an entire IP to the same as a global (your interface). You can only do this if you NAT specific ports.

The above config will allow internet to reach via TCP 80/443/25. I can only assume you're using ISA for EFE server, and maybe proxy. (Not an ISA fan)

The above config allows your ISA server carte-blanche access. In essence, it's a DMZ by name only. Don't fool yourself.

Don't use conduits, they're deprecated.

Don't use a firewall to permit "any" to your ISA server, actually use it to block inbound ports.

Also, your ISA server shouldn't/can't have two NIC's in the same subnet. That's a bad idea on 10 different levels. IF you're using your ISA server (blech) as EFE / reverse proxy for OWA, and outbound proxy - you might as well keep it on the same subnet as your Exchange server (inside, I'm assuming.) Again, 10 different reasons why it's a flawed security plan.

If this is simply an EFE server or reverse proxy, make sure you don't keep the ISA server part of any AD domain, stick it in the DMZ, and restrict what hosts it's allowed to see on the network that you're trying to protect.

Hello everyone:

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this or not but I thought I would try.

We have an Exchange server running Windows Server 2000 and we Blackberry Enterprise Server running on a seperate server. We are getting ready to upgrade our Exchange server to Windows Server 2003 and have run into a snag with a test user we created. We created the new account on our old server and then moved the users mailbox to the new exchange server. When we did that the BES recognizes that the user has moved servers but it doesn't send or recieve messages to the handheld.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

A recent cumulative update for Exchange 2016 was intended to add support for Windows Server 2016. But, after numerous reported issues, Microsoft has acknowledged a problem exists.

According to the release notes?

If you attempt to run Microsoft Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016, you will experience errors in the IIS host process W3WP.exe. There is no workaround at this time. You should postpone deployment of Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016 until a supported fix is available.

Once again, Microsoft?s testing of its own patches seems to have taken a backseat to accelerated release deadlines.

Most obvious way would be to check what is running on the server, otherwise check your settings in outlook and see if you receive/send mail from pop3/smtp or if Exchange Server is listed.

I'm hoping someone can answer or comment on this:

If I said our (Netgear) ADSL Router 'forwards' (IP Port Forwarding) our email to the Exchange Server's IP address, would that make sence?

What would happen if we then ditched the ADSL Router? We're moving into a new office which has the Internet already set up for us to use.
How would the mail know where the Exchange Server is? - Or will it just all fall into place?

A:Exchange Server Back-up

You really aren't going to find any that are FREE and do a good job of backing up individual mailboxes and databases while they are live. You need to ask yourself how much this email is worth to you and what would the effect be on you if they were suddenly gone and unrecoverable. If the answer is "they are worth nothing" then you can use the built in ntbackup utility to back it up. It the answer is "I would be devestated" you need to spend the money to get something like Veritas, BrightStor or other with Exchange connectors. 16GB is a lot of data to lose.

In attempting to fix an issue I had with OREANS32.SYS in my c:\windows\system32\drivers folder on a Win2K3 server, I renamed the file, then created a new 0-byte text file called OREANS32.SYS in the same directory.

Adjusted the pagefile to move it to the D: drive, (which is faster), and upon reboot, I can login to the server, map drives, view an internal website that is hosted on this server, but I can no longer RDP into the server, or open Outlook on my local machine (which connects to this server for Exchange mail).

I have gone back and undone my OREANS32.SYS changes, rebooted, but still getting the same issues.

Any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

A:Can't access exchange server or RDP

OREANS32.SYS on google comes back as an infection, could be one of many... I assume you've already followed this route? If you have an infection, renaming the file isn't going fix the problem...

I'm making the assumption that you're running 2003 SBS if you have everything in one. Are you running enterprise antivirus for your exchange or just a client covering the pc? What errors are in your logs? Can any machines connect to the exchange server?

Check your services, are all necessary exchange services running?

Normally when you set up a new user on exchange and log onto a machine you will have two error messages

"Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft exchange server your system administrator if this condition persist"

and then

"the Action could not be completed"

If you go into the control panel and open "mail/Mail & fax" and then "properties"
and enter the correct name for the server & mailbox and then hit the "check name" box it should underline the user, you should then be able to access the mail.

I hope this is what you needed!

What kind of email client will they be using on the Mac? If the hosted Exchange offers Outlook Web Access, they can access their email from a browser and there shouldn't be any issues.
There are Mac versions of Outlook as well, which will probably work better with Exchange than the native Apple Mail application, although that should work as well.
If they're going to use some other client like Thunderbird, then make sure the hosted Exchange has IMAP and/or POP enabled -- on Exchange, those aren't by default. They'll also need to install an add-on if they want to use all the Exchange features that aren't available in IMAP or POP.

I was hoping there was someone out there who has done this before that could kind of walk me through it. We are running a Windows 2000 server with Exchange 5.5. The OWA component of Exchange is installed, but obviously not configured properly.'s a dumb I need to publish the OWA web files to a web server? Where do I find these files?

I'm moving an mailbox from a Microsoft 2000 server using Microsoft Exchange 5.5. to another server with the same versions. I moved almost everyone except for a few that are still on the old server. One problem I had was with this one user who is on our VPN and trying to set up his OUtlook. It says that the server is not accessible. This happened to th other users I set up before when Outlook was open while the mailbox was being moved. I would just update and refresh the Exchange Manager and Outlook on the client would be ok. For some reason, I think OUtlook is still looking for the old server instead of the new one that's why it can't connect. I'm trying to move it back to the old server now then back to the new one. Any help would be appreciated.

I use MS Office2000 professional and MS Back Office and am having trouble on a small, 5 computer network, sharing things like my calendar and contacts. Every so often, when I reboot, and go to File, then Share, Sharing is greyed out and therefore unavailable. The only fix I have happened upon is to use "detect and repair" and insert the Office2000 disk and wait about 10 minutes while it does whatever it does. When I reboot, it's fixed. This is getting tiring. Any ideas?

I have just recently deployed a new exchange server 2003 on a domain controller running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2. Everything was working well until I setup the VPN server. Now clients have to open and close Outlook several times before it will connect them to the exchange server. It will eventually allow them to connect to the exchange server it is just cumbersome to have to open Outlook 3-5, sometimes 7 times before it will connect to exchange. The DHCP and DNS are working fine, there are no errors reported about them in the event log, but I can't seem to resolve this issue. This just started happening after the VPN server was setup. Any help or tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My company is running Exchange server 5.5 and it seems that whenever our employees try to email specific customers, the message either fails completely or they get partial messages. I talked with the Network admin at the customers company and they say that it is only with us that this issue occurs. We have only 3 customers that this happens to and the rest work fine. Our exchange server is pretty much all defaults and they seem to be universal values, nothing fancy. Any suggestions?

A:Exchange server issues!

What do the addresses that fail have in common? Are they web mail cusomers, do they use Lotus Notes or CC Mail? I would check you Internet Mail Connector and see if it is set up correctly and also find out if Exchange is using the least cost route to send mail. We had a problem where the mail was taking too many hops before it's final destination and the mail would never reach the intended mail server. If you are using DNS to route mail make sure the remote host is registered on the DNS server or it will not go out.

As far as I know, you install the Proxy Client on the Exchange server. Then, when your Internet Connector attempts to make a connection to the internet, it will go through the proxy server.

I just to confirm some facts about the way the Exchange Server 5.5 stores attachments on the server.

If a user sends a message with an attachment to a number of mailboxs on that same server is the attachment stored once in the Information Store or is is stored once for each mailbox. I am assuming it would be stored once but I would like some clarification.

If there is any documentation that explains can you please point me to it.

Guys, the problem seemed to be with the Network and sharing Center
Select Network and Sharing Center > Change the users network to private via the ‘Customize’ option
Disconnect\reconnect to VPN

NB: The Private or Work network location options allow file & printer sharing and Network discovery (other users can see you). A Public location doesn't allow any of these features.

Also this will explain the irregularity of this problem as not all users would be affected.

This is one of those areas where a bit of reading is necessary. An Exchange Server reference for Exchange 2000, 2003, or 2007 would be invaluable for you. This is not an area where a few notes will put you on the way to a quick fix. I am building an application that will allow a user to use a ColdFusion interface to add/edit/delete/change passwords in Windows Exchange 2003. While I have the CF code in place, what I cannot seem to find is a command line entry to add an Exchange-enabled user to the domain. For example, I can use:

NET USER testuser password /ADD /DOMAIN

to add a user to the domain. However, this user does not have an Exchange mailbox enabled. A server administrator would still have to RDP in and enable it through the Windows interface.

Does anyone know if there is a way to do this and, if there is, what it might be?

I'm installing a second exchange server and just wanted to get something clear. When I add second exchange server to the same site it is suppose to replicate with the first exchange server correct? And how extensive is the replication? Can I bring down the old server for upgrades and still not lose exchange functions? I guess what I asking is the replication good enough to remove the exchange services from the old box and just to run the exchange on the newer box. Trying to stay away from backups if possible because the old box runs other services and needs to remain on the network. Thanks in advance for any help.

A:{Advice Given} - Installing second Exchange 5.5 server

Well, if you want to REMOVE the first Exchange server, then you will have to first move all the mailboxes from the one server to the other, which is not part of the normal replication. What Replication does, is replicate the Directory information, and the public folders (if it has been set to replicate public folders).

There is a way of moving the mailboxes in Exchange, but I am not sure that you can automate the moving of ALL the mailboxes.
