I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm not sure if this is the right section for this question.

I really want to prank a friend by making a dialog box appear when they connect to a specific website. It would say something that would probably freak them out and give them a good scare. This would probably be reddit, since they visit it often.

Is there a way I can run some javascript code to display an alert box only when they enter that specific site, and any time they refresh the page/navigate through the site?

I have physical access to the pc.

i am trying to devise a senior prank at my high school that is harmless and does not cause any damage to the school. my idea is to make it so that whenever anybody prints anything, there is a watermark that says 07 rules! in the background in larger letters with like 40% opacity so that whatever the person is trying to print is still clearly visible. we have the new Intel based macs all around the school. most of our printers are large HP laser printers. is this possible to do? how can i do this? do i have to do something to each printer or can this be done on 1 computer and spread throughout the network to the printers. i have legitimate access to all admin passwords at my school because i am a tech there.

A:senior prank Coding help

I don't think that would be funny for more than 5 seconds, after that everyone would be really annoyed. What if someone had to print off and send an important, time-critical doc? They'd have to waste time trying to get it fixed. What if one of your friends needed a reference for a job/Uni and the doc didn't get there in time?
You are in a position of trust, think again please!

When I close IE, another window pops up and tries to send me to another site.....this site is listed below.
Being very careful, I have never allowed this site to open fully, so I don't know if it will or will not open.

I just recently went through a virus cleanup that I got by opening a link in MSN Messenger.

On start up, I would get the message about not finding logon.exe and managed to get that issue resolved thanks to this forum.

Now I would like to eliminate this redirection to the below site after closing any IE page.

I am about a 3, on a 1 to 10 scale of computer savvy so go easy on me please!!!

Running XP pro, IE 7.

Hello and welcome please run these next. I feel we can fix this quickly. If you have Spybot installed temporarily disable it.Next run ATF:Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.Click the Empty Selected button. If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select AllClick the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt. If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select AllClick the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

First off I am wondering if there is a possibility that this is a MySpace bug as opposed to an issue with IE as MySpace is the ONLY website I've been able to replicate this problem with But There seems to be an issue on my wife's Vista account where she can cause an infinite number of IE screens to open This happens when she tries to close IE while her MySpace page is being displayed I have played around with several variables here to try to narrow down the root cause as best I can Here is what I have determined - There must only be one tab If there are two or more tabs in IE the quot bug quot will not appear - This bug appears regardless of what MySpace profile is loaded tried with both my profile and hers - This bug appears ONLY on my wife's Vista account I have not been able to replicate the bug on either my own Vista account or the default Administrator account - The bug only appears when you close Internet Explorer while on MySpace If you navigate away from MySpace prior to closing no bug Initially I thought this could be a MySpace issue since it only happens while using MySpace However the fact that it happens only on my wife's Vista account tosses a monkeywrench into that theory If it was an IE issue I would think it would appear on sites other than just to Closing IE infinite causes windows open. MySpace - and I made a point of testing on sites with a variety of dynamic content to see Closing causes infinite IE windows to open. if that was a cause No luck Finally I ran the usual package of spyware malware scanners AdAware Spyblaster etc etc and came up relativley empty tracking cookies and that's about it Any situation in which you get the infinite opening windows bug error etc is always a bad thing imo but to only have it happen under what seems to be a perfect storm of conditions has got me puzzled Obviously there are a number of viable workarounds for this issue of course this also includes the traditional killing the iexplorer exe process from task manager However a problem is a problem and I would rather solve an issue than use a workaround especially if its indicitave of a bigger problem like malware etc Thanks in advance for any insight you could give -Eric

You have an outdated version of HijackThis.

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

I have rebooted a bouple of times also.

Hi, this is my first post so if i dont use the correct computer terms please excuse me...

My friend sent me a like to this page where a little guy jumps around inside of a box trying to get out. In the process your MAXIMIZED Internet Explorer window gets permanently moved about 1.2" down from the top of the screen so that it is not vertically centered. Changing the resolution and rebooting does not fix this.

All of the folder windows will maximize to their proper location.

Also, on all 3 of the other accounts on our system(Win XP home)'s IE windows maximize to the proper centered location...
PLEASE HELP IM STUCK!

I click on "Libraries", then "Pictures" then a folder in the "Pictures" folder. What I want to do is then open a second (third, fourth) folder so that I can move images between them without the previous one closing.

I feel I am missing a simple step and look forward to your helping me correct this delimma.

I'm set up to run folder windows in a separate instance of Explorer for better stability. But now I'm having problems. When I close all the windows for the second instance of Explorer, the process frequently does not terminate. So then when I try to open another folder window, nothing happens. I have to quit Explorer manually to get it working again. This has happened several times now, and I'm getting tired of it. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm running XP MCE 2002 Edition, all the latest updates.

A:Explorer.exe hangs instead of closing, folders won't open.

Explorer uses up a lot of resources and your method may not be best suited if those, particularly memory, is in limited supply.

You might try doing a "system restore" to a date when there were no problems; these can be undone.

Most problems I've had with explorer disappear on a reboot.

But you can test in Safe Mode and also test using a "clean boot" method of troubleshooting.

CLEAN BOOT TROUBLESHOOTING technique

First, restart in Safe Mode if necessary -- (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu) or Normal mode

Then:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 << written for Vista, but applies equally well to XP

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

I just had to reinstall Windows XP Home and all the updates on a new hard drive. I am running antivirus and spyware software. I am having an intermittant problem (every few minutes) when I try to close or minimize Internet Explorer windows or other open application windows. The mouse and keyboard freeze up. When I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and click twice to close the Task Manager window everything frees up and I am then able to close the other offending window but it is annoying to constantly having to do this. I had this problem about a year ago and if I recall correctly, I found a download on one of the Internet computer forum sites that solved the problem. My chances of finding that again are probably slim to none. Has anyone experienced this particular problem and have a solution.

Thanks much.

Hello, all?

I use TeamViewer frequently to assist others, but too often when I click to close an open, maximized window on the remote PC, I inadvertently click the Close "X" of the open, maximized TeamViewer window...which closes the session and breaks the connection. (I know that care will prevent the problem...but the Close "X" icons of a maximized window inside another window are one directly below the other.)

Is there any Windows 7 option/add-on/util that can require me to do something extra?beyond just clicking the Close "X"?to close a specific open window on my PC? (E.g., set a window so that it requires Ctl+click to close.)

Have searched the forums and Web at large, w/o success. Thx in advance for any ideas.

A:Windows Explorer closing down whenever I open any files in My Document

Hi all,

I thought I would follow up with my findings and solution to my Windows Explorer nightmare as I am quite pleased with myself for persevering and fixing it. It was right under my nose all along but it was just knowing how to go about it.

Basically, "Event Viewer" gave me all the information I needed. In the event tree I clicked on "Windows" then "Applications" which gave a list of apps with either a blue info icon to the left of the information, an exclamation mark in red for error or a yellow exclamation mark for warning. There were plenty of red error icons which I hoped would be logs of Windows Explorer closing down, and sure enough they were. On following the "Failing Application Path" c:\program files\ASUSWSShellExt64.dll I found the highlighted shell extension, Which is basically Asus Web Storage. I promptly uninstalled the program and have had no crashes whatsoever, yee haaaaa!

Hope this helps someone else someday as it almost blew my brains out

Martin.

I am also facing the same hinge problem and luckily now I saw this post. As everyone mentioned I was just closing and opening my laptop and the right side popped open suddenly yesterday.
The replies from dell were exactly same as for other people $159 for the repair and this is an accidental damage. I am surprised with so many posts over 1 year they have not done anything to rectify this problem
According to me they should retake all the laptops sold and should not release this model until this problem is fixed.
Please let me know if anyone else is successful in overcoming this issue.

Thanks

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us with your feedback .
There are no inherent issues with the systems. All the systems that are boxed go through a quality check .
From looking at the pictures posted and i have also checked with my product team this is clearly falls under accidental damage and not covered under basic warranty .
Thanks
Robin

Hello,

I have the identical problem as outlined here:
It is seemingly impossible to reply or get attention there so I am reposting it.
I live in Thailand and have had the machine for approximately 2 years.
Please advise.
Thank you,
Phil.

I have tried to search for this problem and haven't found any other reference. I have tried virus, malware & spyware scans and seem to be clear of such. I am running Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. Laptop is Toshiba Satellite, Intel Pentium 1.50 MHz, 2.00 GB RAM. All of my programs seem to work and I have no problems with internet access or speed. It is very annoying and, if I am typing, I miss letters or spaces if the flashing of the command prompt window opens and closes. It never stay open long enough for me to read any text so I can't tell you what is going on. Just in the time I have been typing this, the event has happened 10-12 times. I would really appreciate any help. I have tried "System Restore" but get a "Failure to Restore" message for all of the restore points I have tried.

A:Black "command prompt" windows keep flashing open & closing immediately

Hello let's do this to stop the screen so you can read it and post the error.. Then do an MBAM scan and post a log.Click on Start, then right click on My Computer.Scroll and select Properties, then choose Advanced tab.Under Start up and Recovery click Settings. Under System Failure uncheck Automatic System Restart. Now when the BSOD occurs the screen will stop and you can write the complete error down to post.Next run MBAM:Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.36) and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

As many have already mentioned in other threads, Inspiron 5547 used to make click sound while closing/opening the laptop. 2 days ago, I found the right corner edge has popped open.
Laptop is now out of warranty but this seems to be manufacturing defect as this has been common complaint from so many people over a constant period of time.
Can someone please let me know what is the course of action?
Thanks

Hello everyone I'm having the issue noted above BSODs attribute the crash to either one of two files cdd dll most commonly and win k sys only once Screen turns jagged goes black and then BSOD but only when closing of Warcraft, World Chrome BSOD resizing/closing also when occasionally I've had this crashes happen to me only times in a whole week already World of BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome Warcraft crashes were all succesive BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome but after updating Catalyst drivers it never happened again PC was crash-free for or days thought it may have solved the issue and I could stop worrying about faulty hardware components but yesterday night closing Chrome it happened again I turned off Aero desktop after that just in case The problem is I can't find any Memory dump or minidump for those BSODs even though settings are on for that maybe MEMORY DMP is too large I have free Gb out of on my boot drive I changed it to minidumps just in case Oh also it was already set to overwrite so no idea what's going on Could not find them manually nor could SF Diagnostics tools which I just ran My rig is new only about months old and no hardware changes since The only components coming from my older PC are the boot HDD and graphics card The only thing that's happened is or power outages in December but BSODs started only last week If any hardware components are malfunctioning they are luckily under warranty but I need to determine if that's the case Only other strange thing is that when gathering my rig's data for this post Everest shows my Motherboard as quot Unknown quot I'll double check I installed all drivers Thanks in advance btw great tool that SF Diagnostics I'm no computer wizard but it's quite useful even for an amateur like me

A:BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome

Hi Haxiel.

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup tool before you upload another zip.

A:Slow browser, IE closing, Outlook and Yahoo closing

Hi Elise,
thank you. I ended up getting rid of PC Tools Internet Security and switching to AVG Basic Free. I think most of the major problems went away.
Yahoo has stayed up, Outlook has stayed up, browser seems to work quickly, facebook didn't have floating text and pictures anymore, was able to do some posting, sent some large emails. But, and not exactly sure, IE has frozen up, but not as often. The dds program you had me run this morning froze and I had to do a hard shut off, task mgr didn't respond and the weirdest thing of all, the clock stopped. Can't say I have ever seen that. So I am not sure what exactly is going on, if it really is malware or some setting is messed up. I wasn't able to run video on a site last night. Major improvement since I got rid of PC tools, but not quite right. Sorry, nontechie.

Obvious to anyone. You have three malware apps running live at the same time. You have Avast, Kaspersky, and AVG.

You need to remove them all and install Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST.

If you continue to crash even after removing them upload the DMP file as you have old drivers that need updating.

When I open "my computer" or "control panel" after I close it...it automatically goes into Internet Explorer as a blank page. Most of the time, when I close the IE blank page...it stops responding and I have the control-alt-delete to "end the program"
Thanks in advance for any help.

Try holding down the Power button until you hear the drive spin down(if you have a spinner.) In any case it should shut it all the way down. Wait about 10 seconds and hit the Power button again to bring it up.

You will need to locate the installation files for your applicatons ( including firewall )

You should be able to find the drivers on the Manufacturers web support site . . save to CD or on your backup

You can run the Belarc Advisor to capture the details of the system, including install keys.

Q: wipe HD

Hey, I am upgrading my mobo, CPU, fan, etc etc, and I was told I should reformat my hard drive so that I won't have any troubles having Windows ME detect all the new hard ware. First off, what is reformatting? Also, what other steps do I need to take if I am going to make it so there will be no problems in having Windows detect new hardware?

Second off, if I have to wipe my HD, is it safe to burn all my files from my hard drive to CD's and drag them back to my HD after I get my hardware working?

I was just wondering if it were possible to wipe a HDD with a PSU. I wouldn't want to try it, but what if one were to put a HDD on top of the case just above the PSU. Would the PSU erase all data on the HDD?

I don't suggest you try it... just in case.

A:can a PSU wipe a HDD?

Hi
No, the drive will be unaffected by proximity to the psu. What will get rid of data is an app to write zeros to the drive.

Hello, my girlfriend recently bough a Laptop, It had Windows Vista on it but she installed Windows 7. The trouble with this laptop is that it works very slow, it was formated. I presume that there are still some old registry files or visues which were not removed on format.
Can someone tell me how i can set up this laptop as fresh one? Like from store ? So then she can enjoy it

A:Wipe everything

You cannot set it up as it came from the store, since it had Vista on it, along with the typical junk that OEMs install on laptops.

The first thing I would do before attempting to install a different version of the O/S...would be to run the appropriate hard drive diagnostic on the system hard drive...to ensure there are no problems there which may defeat any efforts to install/use an O/S.

Then...assuming that I have a legal copy of Win 7 on DVD and the drive checks out as functionally sound...I simply insert the Windows install disk into the optical drive...reboot...delete existing partitions...and create new partition/format/install Windows by following the bouncing ball presented onscreen during the install routine.

I'm thinking about installing Win 8 on my desktop which is not my main computer. It currently has Win 7 home premium 64 bit. The computer also has a Dr. D: which has the System Recovery. If I do a fresh install of Win 8, will it wipe out Dr. D:? I'm assuming that it won't, but I've been know to be wrong. Thanks~~Frank

A:Wipe out Dr: D?

Windows Eight will install where you tell it to install. If you tell it to install on D it will probably do it. If you wan to install Eight, just create a new partition and install it there. They recommend a partition size of at least 25 gigs.

Did AVG catch the backdoor malware during delivery or a scan? Backdoors can be serious problem once they have established themselves on your computer. I would change all passwords and check all financial accounts such as banking, credit cards, paypal, Ebay, etc. if you have used those on the computer if the backdoor was not caught during delivery.Run a scan with Super Antispyware and let us know the results please.Install Super Antispyware. A:Action center won't open, Internel Explorer only browser that will open, no MalwareBytes and RKill will not open

An update.

I've tried running MalwareBytes and RKill from a flash drive which is also not working. Windows also ends up unable to load, the startup repair runs and things work fine. Not long after Windows tries to update and then it becomes unable to load again and the startup repair runs again.

I tried running a registry fix for the .exe problem and I get an error stating that the registry is being used even when no programs are running and I am in safe mode.

Hope this information helps

Hi, to bleeping computer, Trinilady. I am [email protected], and I will attempt to help you with malwarewipe. I am only a HJT trainee, so I may ask you to post a hijackthis log later on. Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home UsersDouble-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation. An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program. If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.Click the Scanning Control tab.Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):Close browsers before scanning.Scan for tracking cookies.Terminate memory threats before quarantining.Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer. On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive. On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer. After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor. Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.Click Close to exit the program.after you have accomplished this, Please run a BitDefender Online ScanClick I Agree to agree to the EULA.Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.Click Click here to scan to begin the scan. Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan. When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.

A:Malware Wipe (3)

spindle82 same goes for you do not post into another's thread it gets confusing - this will be split off

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new hijack log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Im sorry if this is a real stupid question im just so confused.. I know how to access the BIOS but im not sure if itll still be there after the wipe.... Thank You

The bios is independent of Windows and is in memory on the motherboard, not on the hard drive. If you have a full installation Windows XP CD you should be able to format the drive (use NTFS not Fat 32) and do a fresh install of Windows XP.Make sure you have the 25 digit Windows key handy for the computer on which you are reinstalling XP.(this key must have never have been used on any other computer but this one or it won't activate)How to perform a Clean Install Windows XPhttp://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Well, my old XP computer is sitting in a corner, now that this Windows 7 machine is up and running. So I've decided to sell my XP machine--reluctantly. That machine saw a lot of creative work!.

Of course, I had some personal files on the HD, and I'd like to ensure they're unrecoverable. How do I do that to sections of the old HD (not the entire HD)?

Thanks.

I have 2 accesible drives (Other one being Samsung Recovery, its only readable and hidden).

First drive is C, where Windows Vista is installed on now, and drive D is my ''Games'' drive.

I want to completly wipe drive D, but still have it useable when I install Windows 7 on C.

A:Wipe my drives?

Simplest method is to click on the drive and then "Format".

Make sure you are aware of the difference between a "Drive" and a "Partition".

If you want to thoroughly wipe the drive or partition.

I am sorry if this question has already been asked, but I have a dell Inspriron Laptop and a few months ago it was running really slowly- that has now been fixed thankfully, but I am now left with the problem of the screen resolution size being just bigger then 800 by 600.

I have rung dell about this and they want to charge me about ?40 for them to fix it and I was wondering if I wiped the PC and then load the driver etc back on would this fix the problem?

Any suggests would be helpful!

Thanks

Amanda

A:How Do I Wipe My Computer?

on your desktop
right click anything that is not an icon. choose properties (bottom option)
choose the settings tab (on top, to the far right)
see the slider in the middle of the window.
slide that bad boy left if you want bigger everything and right if you want smaller everything. (it will not do anything until you hit apply, then click the OK button before time runs out)
if this makes your screen totally unviewable, wait 15 seconds for it to revert.

Hi

how do I get my win 7 prof HDD reset to factory settings with the OS still there - I do not have the OS cd

A:Wipe HDD drive

May we get some more information on your system, is it a desktop or a laptop hard drive you're trying to reformat.

If it is a desktop hard drive that did not come with a recovery partition, you will need to obtain the cd legally. We can't help you obtain them any other way.

This thread might provide some insightful links to help you.

To be honest I love XP and can sort nearly every problem. I got a Laptop for me and one of my kids to share and have played with Vista home for a few months. lately I have not used it but my daughter has used it for school and chat to mates.

Now the machine is freezing, slow and impossible. I have tried all the spyware, a/virus stuff but am at a loss. plus everything is harder to find.

So soon into an OS im feeling like wiping and starting afresh with XP.

is it me or is it harder to sort Vista

A:Should I wipe vista

Suggestion

Your going to have to learn vista sooner or later there is no getting around it. But for right now Id suggest doing a dual boot that way you can tinker with and learn vista while still having XP on there for your normal everyday stuff.

I didnt want to learn vista either but it is somthing that I have to do. Id imagine that there will soon be many vista installs seeking my help at my computer shop and I for one can not be ill prepared with this new OS.

I found a useful tool called Directory Snoop, but unfortunately some of its features don't work on Vista due to drive not lock problem. Is there a patch for this? Does anyone know a similar program with similar features(i.e. cluster level search)?

I liked this program, because unlike most software where you wipe the entire free space, with this you can specify which clusters to wipe, thereby avoiding the unnecessary wiping of unused (i.e. never used) clusters. My hard drive is rather new and I don't like to diminsh its quality by increasing its MTTF, with unnessary wipage.

thanks

Mike
