No desktop or icons in start menu after "privacy protection" installed itself "

Q: No desktop or icons in start menu after "privacy protection" installed itself "

After privacy protection installed itself I no longer have a desktop. The task bar is still on the screen as well as the start menu. But when I click on the start menu there is nothing on it. The only programs that are running are " privacy protection", "windows security center", and "XP anti-virus 2012". All three of these are running completely by themselves and I never installed or downloaded any of them. I cannot get on the internet or do anything with my computer. I know that privacy protection and XP anti-virus 2012 are fake virus protection but when my computer was still somewhat functional, these programs did not allow me to run anything which made it hard to fight it off. I have some really important stuff on my computer and I would hate to lose it all.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:change start menu icons "devices and printers" and "recorded tv"

Hello Danny,

The default icon for Devices and Printers is located at the registry locations below. This will also change the icon in all other locatations as well. For example in the Control Panel.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A8A91A66-3A7D-4424-8D24-04E180695C7A}\DefaultIcon

I have not found the Recorded TV one yet though.

Good day all.

I recently restarted my computer only to be met with an empty desktop.

Also, My Start Menu is empty. I can't locate any of programs or documents.a Right clicking and going to windows explorer, I could only view : "My Computer", "Windows (C); and when I click on them, they contain few irrelevant files.

In other words I can't find my personal saved documents, "my document" folder , recycle bin and all other programs.

My wifi still works so the only thing I can do on my system is browse on the internet.

However, I can open a microsoft office file, PDF files, if I download it directly from my email or from an external drive.

I can save files on my new blank desktop.

I presume this is a virus attack.

Can anyone be kind enough to advise me on what to do?

Thanking you in advance.

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Real quick. Just installed Win10, and installed all the programs.

So I have a bunch of "New" programs. Is there a quick way to clear New, without having to open every single program?

Can't seem to find an option or anything on google about it.

Also, I go to add more shortcuts to the Start Menu (All Apps List).

I go to both locations here:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu (which goes to C:\Users\[Login]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs)
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

But whenever I copy a Shortcut for this one particular program (HexChat) into those locations, it just pins the shortcut to the tile area of the Start Menu, and not in the All Apps list.

It is actually weird, because the first shortcut I added was added to the All Apps list just fine.

Edit: Seems to be only this one program, HexChat

Hi. Start menu -> I can only see shut down, or sleep, depending on how it's configured, but to access other power options I have to click on the small white arrow to the right of the power button.

So if the default setting of the big button is shutdown then it's a hassle to choose sleep because I have to click on the oh so small button arrow thing.

There's loads of room at the bottom right of my start menu so please tell me how to have a shutdown button AND a sleep button, because I frequently use both functions and don't want to have to choose only one for quick access. Cheers

ADKR,
I note that you have posted this question in Microsoft's Discussion Groups - Windows 7 - Word 2007 in Word General Questions.
Some reasonable replies were given to you that you didn't respond to. Did you actually try them?

This Tutorial written by our Brink would seem to be a reasonable alternative for you to use.

I recently noticed that I no longer have a "My Computer" icon or a "My Documents" icon on my desktop. I tried to restore by right clicking on desktop, clicking Properties, clicking Desktop tab, and clicking Customize desktop. The problem is once there, both the my computer and my documents are greyed and can't be selected. I'm clueless as to how they disappeared although I was also missing the calculator and the recycle bin. Fortunately, I've found a way to get those back but I'm at a loss as to resolving the missing my computer and my documents icons.

All help will be most gratefully appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

I'm guessing you're a fairly new computer/internet user, otherwise you would know that posting everything in CAPITAL LETTERS is considered shouting. It is also extremely difficult to read.

For that reason, I haven't even tried to read it, I'll wait for the edited version.

I am using "Classic Start" menu (Classic Shell)
I have copy/dragged Start > Programs > Desktop (shortcut) ... onto the Start (menu)

When any program is open neither the (default) Start/Programs/Desktop ... nor... Start/Desktop shortcuts do anything.
ie, Desktop is not activated.
I have been copy/dragging some Start/Programs/<shortcuts> around to reduce the size of the "Programs" menu.
In shortcut properties Desktop path "Show Desktop" is (disabled)
(But the same shortcut works on my Win7 PC.

On Win8 PC when I create a shortcut to desktop (ie, C:\Users\MyName\Desktop-- the shortcut opens WinExp at Desktop.
It does not minimize all open windows to reveal the Desktop.
The Win8 "Start screen" is not being used because I have modified the Laptop to boot/awaken to Desktop

Obviously I am missing something ... would appreciate any help

Thank you

A:"Desktop" shortcut on Start menu does not work

Have you tried clicking on the "show desktop" button at the far right side of the taskbar , just to the right of the time? It works the same as in Win 7, the button isn't as obvious though.

I just saw this on a new HP laptop I am working on, it actually makes a kind of Program Menu, so if you don't want a full Start Menu like Windows 7, you can use this to just have links to your Programs:

The HP Quick Start Application (Windows 8) | HP? Support
Installation Causes a reboot so unless you are ready to reboot, don't install it.

It takes a few minutes to populate the Program Links trhe first time it is run, after that it pops up quick and it can be added to Startup Programs.

A:HP's "Quickstart" acts as a "Start Menu"

Looks good.

Yep. It is designed to be a start menu, I've seen it in action. They've made it to add missing start menu functionality back to W8. This is a strategy by HP to accommodate more 'classic' users with the new OS. I think other manufacturers may use similar programs.

When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.
What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I cannot delete one of two anti-virus programs (conflicting) because the "All Programs" with the green arrow does not appear at the bottom of the Start menu.

I do not know how to get it back and I can't get to any of the installed programs...help!

A:Cannot see "All Programs" in the "Start" menu!

If 'run' is available, click on it. In the box type msconfig then press the enter key.
When the program comes up, pick the startp tab. Under that tab is a list of programs
that start when the computer boots. Note the check boxes at the left. Uncheck your virus programs and exit. Reboot and see if you get your programs button back.
To uninstall, you can try using the control panel. In it, pick add/remove programs. There, click on the antivirus program you want to uninstall and tell it to uninstall.
If that don't work, you may have to restart your computer in the Safe Mode and remove it from there.

Hope this helps.

One feature I really liked in XP was the ability to look in a folder through My Computer and sort the files by extension. For example if I wanted to get all .jpg files to one side of the folder as I looked for a file, I could click View, Arrange Icons By, Type and make that happen. I don't see that feature in Windows 7. I'm using W7Pro and can't find that or a similar feature anywhere. Is it here and I just haven't found it? TIA

I noticed a 'check mark' icon in my system tray and on investigating it is a program called "Malware Protection Live". It just suddenly was there...It shows up in Control Panel > Programs and Features and it appears I could uninstall it there....It says it was installed yesterday, but I have no recollection of installing anything yesterday.

I'm running Norton Security with a current subscription and all Windows Updates are / have been in place.

I planned to upgrade to Windows 10 tomorrow while I'm working from home on my laptop, but I'd like to get this dealt with. Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Malware Protection Live is a infection. Have you downloaded anything in the last few days. If you did it probable came along as a rider.

This should help you.

I also recommend using AdwCleaner from Bleeping Computer. Select the Download button for Bleeming Computer not the authors button.

Hiya, I'm new to the site and also a complete amateur when it comes to computers but came across this site and was hoping someone could help me.

I turned my computer on this morning and saw a new red desktop image, saying that my privacy is in danger with 4 new icons on the desktop: ------

I've used my antivirus software but when it tries to fix the virus detected it says access denied. All of my virus protection was switched off also!

I'm really worried as I think I have wrecked the family computer but was hoping you could help me fix it? I've read some similar posts but am unsure what Hijackthis etc is so could you help clearly explain what I hve to do?

Thanks so much for your time and help, it is greatly appreciated :)

A:"Your privacy is in danger" Desktop issues, Please help

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Note:

DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts

If the following message from DSS appears, please click on "Yes" to allow it to download HijackThis, if you don't already have it.

Allow DSS through your firewall to download HijackThis by clicking "OK"

DSS has installed HijackThis, and placed a shortcut on your desktop. Click "OK" to allow the scan to continue.

.

DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

re:

Lower right hand "Quick Launch" Menu ( on da desktop) and
"Green Box" of CPU usage in it.

Many times while surfing on da net and opening some web sites, all of a sudden, I see,
a green square BOX in the lower right corner of the screen showing CPU usage and
filling the box with green color in it,...
and it clogs and blocks the whole activities
and can not even get out of it, or can close any of the application.

What is that? Why it does that?

It means low memory? Low space? or What?

What should be done to avoid it? What should we do when it comes?

All advices needed, please.

Thanks.

When I go to insert a picture in a certain program the "picture services" window pops up. I go to choose the "icon size" for my photos and it will not remember the selection, "medium icons" for the size of my photos in the selection window. It always reverts back to "large icons". I can only see 2 pictures at a time with "large icons" instead of 8 with "medium icons". No matter which option I choose to view my pictures it always reverts back to "large icons". Well, that's it really.

I'm using Excel 2007 and when I right-click on a cell or row, the "cut" and "copy" options are greyed out. I can still work using the toolbar menus and icons, or the shortcut keys, so it's not a big problem, but I'm not comfortable with the context menu not working properly.

This happens in all workbooks, including brand new ones. I've looked through the Excel Options but can't find anything.

Any ideas?

A:remove the "open" and "merge" entries from context menu?

Open I don't think so, Merge sounds like it is added by a 3rd party program, and likely can be removed. Have a look at ShellMenuvVew and ShellExView from NirSoft. You can remove entries with both. But Open will not be listed, and I have seen no way to remove it. A Guy

Download http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

A:Windows update "hang" - menu shortcut & installed updates

I'm not sure that resetting WU would actually cure your problem - it sounds to me more of a systemic problem, possibly to do with one of the involved technologies (scripting, NET, etc.).

My wuapp.exe has TrustedInstaller as owner, with only Read and Execute permissions for users and Admins.

I'm not sure that I'm describing this right so please help me out with the description if necessary I have two Win installs that I plan to upgrade to Win Each is on a separate physical drive one SSD and one HDD Thanks to good advice in this forum I used bcdboot so that both of them are included in the same boot menu OK so my TEST install was active and my PRODUCTION install was not active Or so I thought As an experiment I changed the drive letter of the PRODUCTION install from C to K and Windows complained saying that Drive C was being used And then Skype shut down Huh So what happened My goal is to have two or three menu, two in Win seems to boot Joined installed "depend" on one other Win installs that are all included in one boot menu for convenience but which should be isolated from each other That Joined two Win installed in boot menu, one seems to "depend" on other way I can do experimental downloads and general testing without messing up my PRODUCTION install x

A:Joined two Win installed in boot menu, one seems to "depend" on other

Under normal conditions, whichever Windows you are booted into at the time gets the C: drive. When you attempted to change the PRODUCTION install from C: to K:, it was in use - because that is why it was C: to begin with - because that is what you were booted into at the time.

Let's say you have a second Windows installation that is currently D: drive. When you run the bcdboot D:\Windows command to add it to the boot menu, it does not actually add the D: drive letter to the boot menu, it adds the GUID of the partition that is marked as D: drive to the boot menu. Then when you select that Windows to boot into, it gets C: drive letter. It does not retain the D: drive letter that it had when you added it to the boot menu.

Best thing to do is to add volume labels to your partitions so you always know exactly which partition has the C: drive letter at the time.

I got a quot new quot to me anyway desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn t working So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card and inserted that onto the motherboard Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard Since then to my horror the machine has failed to boot All plugged in keyboard working screen on and being used on another box for this very post All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes definitely depressing so I guess they re suggesting something s failed There s no further action from the CPU the fan still works but there is no screen output whatever Have I fried the motherboard without realising Also ironically the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware I d love a bit of help on this one because my knowledge of computers insidey bits is pretty poor Many thanks Joe nbsp

A:NO DESKTOP after booting up & SYSTEM RESTORE "Incomplete" & "Strange" Temp Files

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

Hi guys. I noticed that in Win7, the applications in the new Quick Launch move if you run one of the applications in the "Pinned to Taskbar" section. For example, if I have Windows Explorer and Firefox next to each other and I click to open Windows Explorer, the Firefox icon will slide far to the right so that it's after the Windows Explorer task in the taskbar.

Is there a way to keep the new quicklanuch icons in Win7 in the same place, like WinXP?

I have Windows XP Pro., sp3.

When you install a new program, what determines where it is listed: All Users>Start Menu>Programs or "user name">Start Menu>Programs?

reoneill

A:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

Hope that helps mate.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Go in via safe mode find out the necessary information about the driver then go to the website to download to desktop. Then install.
Follow this tut to up date the driver

If it cannot be updated in this way, follow to step 7 and go to website and explained above.

If you unistall the driver, you can use automatic update.

I am not sure if that is your problem, however.

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

Your best bet is to fully uninstall Norton (see their instructions on the Symantec website.
It is a pig of a job though.
Then re-install it and run all of the updates.

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

I'm trying to remove the Personalize option of the desktop context menu via GPO - if I use the Microsoft.Personalization object in the User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Hide Specified Control Panel items GPO then the item is removed from control panel as expected, but the menu item remains in the desktop context menu and clicking on it throws a generic "Unspecified Error" pop upIs there a better way to achieve this?

I've noticed that if I right click a jpg file I get "set as desktop background" option in the context menu.

How can I remove this option?

PS: I just want to remove the context menu option, not the function ..

A:Remove "set as desktop background" in Explorer Context Menu

I believe all the options that will remove the context menu entry will also disable the function. I have yet to find a program that cleans up all available context menu entries. Most only do limited removal.

Some links for disabling:

Hi there I have a weird and frustrating problem In my desktop context menu the option quot Sort by quot doesn't show up I don't know why and did some Google searches but almost everything I found was related to explorer issues not to desktop issues I also read menu show doesn't up "Sort context by" in desktop through quot How to Change "Sort by" doesn't show up in desktop context menu the Desktop Icons View Alignment and Sort By Order in Vista quot and quot How to Change "Sort by" doesn't show up in desktop context menu the Group By - Sort By - Arrange By View in Windows Explorer quot yet the only thing I found is that indeed the quot Sort by quot option should be available I also found Quote You ve always been able to auto-arrange your desktop icons by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing Sort By Now Windows makes it even easier To auto-arrange the desktop icons according to your default settings simply press and hold F Order is instantly accomplished Source Windows Tips Part Now you have total things to try - Windows Live which I consider being ridiculous at least from my feeling at the moment edit Attached an actual screenshot I hope there is a way out and that M did not kill off this important -feature Thanks in advance Kind regards

Hello KnowledgeWorker.

Please excuse my mess but I get "sort by" on my desktop though I'm not sure where to start to help you sort your issue; I'm sure someone else with some knowledge of it will come along to help shortly.

Time to boot to an external testing/repair environment, such as a Win7 Repair disk or a hard drive test disk.

Hiya I could use a little help resolving what should be a simple problem It sound Navigation i.e. "Click" Start.wav" file, "Windows s really a long story but "Windows Navigation Start.wav" file, i.e. "Click" sound to skip to the important part I ll just recount this little tale I wanted to delete some files off of an old external hard drive to make space for some new stuff It didn t matter since the files I was deleting had been long since copied to a new drive However Vista in its infinite wisdom told me I couldn t delete the files and it was for my own good I politely said quot okay Vista Thanks for keeping me honest quot But "Windows Navigation Start.wav" file, i.e. "Click" sound then I muttered quot I already "Windows Navigation Start.wav" file, i.e. "Click" sound have a mother quot under my breath and proceeded to go behind Vista s back and turn off User Account Control so I could delete the files anyway Well I knew that wasn t the best idea so I immediately turned UAC back on afterwards but it was too late Vista caught me and after the second restart smote me with a problem I d seen once before nearly every program on my computer was said to have been closed after it quot encountered a problem quot or some nonsense and when restarted again the disk checker was run found numerous problems and did whatever it had to do to go about fixing them all Now I m not sure what all that was about because everything seems to be running okay now save for one minor thing That little quot click quot sound you get when navigating windows explorer was nowhere to be heard I tried another restart and another disk check but nothing When I go to the sound personalization window all other sounds are fine but the quot Start Navigation quot sound under quot Windows Explorer quot shows a little quot quot icon next to it and the quot Windows Navigation Start wav quot file that accompanies it is missing I don t know why and more importantly I don t know how to restore it It s not like my computer has been rendered useless or my files irrevocably destroyed but ya know I got attached to that little quot Click quot sound and I want to bring him back If anybody can suggest what may have caused this that would be great But if anybody can tell me how to return that long lost wav file to his rightful place that would be even better I ve searched online but all I ve found are about kajillion pages describing how to disable that sound but I don t want to disable it I want to bring it back Is there a place somewhere in the depths of the internet where I can download the file and place it in the C Windows Media folder or perhaps a way to restore the original Thanks in advance for any response nbsp

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

On another installed Win7 system I opened START menu and entered

regedit

into the search entry field at the bottom. Then I hit RETURN.
Much to my surprise not the Registry Editor was opened but WinExplorer.

On my main computer the regedit tool is started.

So how can I tell Win7 to start regedit if I enter regedit?
