I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm no genius, but if the computer is on I believe there is a way to check duration of which the machine has been on. Also, for connection to the internet, You can check duration of that as well... I dunno, maybe install surveillance camera's?

I reinstalled windows xp media center 2005 after installing a new hard drive.
After doing so, the information balloons in the taskbar doesn't appear, just
get popping sound. For instance, when using the safely remove hardware, I
don't get the balloon stating it's safe to remove. Only hear the popping
sound. When resting the cursor over an icon, I get the name of the program
and right clicking brings up the menu. But, I can't get the information
balloon.
I read a tip to log off and log back on to fix it but it didn't work. Any suggestions?

I had to do a clean install on a new hard drive and since then have not been able to get my task bar balloons to show. For example, when using the Safely Remove Hardware icon, I don't get the Now Safe To Remove balloon. I only get a popping sound. When running a Mcafee virus scans, I can't view the scan progress when resting the cursor over the icon. I do get the identifying pop up and that is all. I've tried the log off and on tip but it didn't work. Can anyone help me?

Hi All

Whenever I restart the computer or something goes wrong with explorer.exe and it has to close down, the items in QL all revert back to alphabetical order. I have it set up so the ones I use more often, are displayed and the rest are hidden away in the extension. Is there a way I can 'lock' these items in place?

A:Quick Launch in the Taskbar

hello, I had this problem before also, Right click on your taskbar near the quick launch icons and scroll down till you see "lock the taskbar", it worked for me.
also if you have alot of icons in your QL grab the dividing line with your mouse and move it to the right a little and you should be able to see more.

Today I noticed that there is a small problem in the height of the Win7 taskbar if I select Large icons in the Quick Launch toolbar. (before I always used small icons)

In the Large view the Win7 taskbar doesn't fill the space vertically but is aligned to the top leaving some empty space at the bottom.
Please check the attached screenshots to better understand what I mean.

I know is really a small detail, but maybe someone knows a way around it anyway^^

Thanks!

I just recently downloaded a new version of Quick Time. It put Quick Time and Quick Time Player on my task bar. Is it necessary to have it there to watch downloaded video? I know I can remove it by going to startup but would that effect performance? Also when I installed a new cdrw/dvdrom that came with Nero express software, incd was part of the software package. Do Nero and incd work together? Do I need to keep incd in startup in order for Nero to work correctly? Thank you in advance for your help.

I keep 'losing' my quick-launch icons on the left-hand side of the task-bar. The icons first become inoperative, and shortly afterwards vanish altogether. Hovering the mouse pointer over the quick-launch corner does briefly produce the outline of buttons, and the "tip box", but nothing further. They do return if I re-boot, but are soon gone again. If I right-click-Open Folder, Win explorer opens the folder containing the links, and clicking on those links does work. Any ideas folks?

This problem has been present since MS pushed WinXP Pro SP3.

But. . . What I want to know is,
Whether there any way to add it to list of toolbars in the taskbar context menu like the address, links, and desktop toolbars?
(So that it will stay in the list of toolbars even when it's turned off, like how it was in Windows XP.)

A:Help with adding quick launch and taskbar items

Right click on All Programs and select explore. Expand “Programs” and drag or paste a shortcut for the program you want to run at startup into the “Startup” folder.

You can just drag icons from your desktop to the quick launch.

To add stuff to the system tray (which is what I think you want to do) you can get one of dozens of freeware tray managers. This one looks like it will do what you want: http://www.gregorybraun.com/TrayTool.html If you don’t like that have a look through this list: http://www.nonags.com/nonags/launch32.html

You might have a look at RunIt. You just right click on the top of the screen and a menu drops down. You can put anything you want in the menu. It is a lot easier than looking through all of the icons in the tray: http://www.webattack.com/get/runit.shtml

Somehow taskbar launch sorted Quick disabled and my quick launch taskbar got disabled I right-clicked on the Taskbar selected Toolbars and rechecked Quick Launch It came back but all of the icons were sorted alphabetically I had them arranged in groups for easier access Is there any way to restore it the way it was I have Carbonite doing continuous backups but I think it's mainly data files I don't think it backs up system files I also have the Carbonite Mirror Image Quick launch taskbar disabled and sorted backup on a USB drive so I should have a complete system backup with checkpoints every few days going back for over a year I've never restored anything from that backup so I don't know if there's a way to get a single file and even if there is which file I would need to get I'd appreciate any help If not no biggie I'll just manually rearrange them But then I'd like to know where the settings are stored so I can make a backup in case this happens again Thanks Now I'll try to describe the unusual events just before this happened Maybe someone can tell me why it happened I came back to the computer after being away for an hour or two On the screen there was a message from the Windows Update facility telling me Quick launch taskbar disabled and sorted that updates had been applied and my machine would be restarted in minutes It had a countdown timer going This was an unusual message because I have the Windows Automatic Updates set to the second option Download updates but let me choose when to install I ve never gotten Quick launch taskbar disabled and sorted this message before I always get a little Taskbar pop-up telling that there are updates ready to install I check the settings and somehow it had gotten changed to the first option Automatic I changed it back to the second option I clicked on the Restart Later button Of course that only made the annoying message go away for a few minutes So I closed what I was working on and rebooted the machine When it came back up I got a pop-up from the Taskbar telling me that updates were available for download As an aside it never seems to download them until I say to but whatever I thought this was odd since it just told me that updates had been applied I clicked on the update icon and got a dialog telling me that there were updates to apply Anyway I clicked on the button to install them While that was running I got a message from Malware Bytes It said it was unable to perform a rootkit scan and it was probably because of root record activity I figured that was the update The updates took about minutes and then I rebooted the machine When it came back up the quick launch toolbar was gone Any clues

My Vista taskbar icons are set to large and the taskbar is not locked - no problems ever. However, I have just installed the latest Adobe Reader update (9.1.3) and several of the taskbar quick launch 'buttons' show and work but the icons themselves do not show - ie the icons are blank. I have tried re-installing the shortcuts, also changing the icons to small but that makes no difference. Not sure where to go from here? Also carried out a full virus scan but nothing found.

I find it very annoying with labels appearing over the icons when I already know what the icon is for. This is even more annoying when the label covers almost the entire length of the taskbar.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these labels altogether? I suspect it may mean a visit o the registry.

Hi all I am fairly new to Windows 7 and its quick launch taskbar. However when I started using it once I clicked on a quick launch icon it stacked it to itself after opening. for instance Firefox or Chrome. Now however when I click one it quick launch icon does not "stack" after opening it creates another icon that then does stack. It now does this for everything on my quick launch. Any ideas. I know it is not a big deal but it drives the old lady crazy and I hate hearing about it LOL Thanks for looking and your help.

A:Windows 7 taskbar quick launch Does not stack creates new

Hello Nick, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Technically Quick Launch is a taskbar toolbar and not a pinned item. This is why when you open/run a item from Quick Launch, it will still have a separate icon appear on the taskbar for it's opened window. There's nothing that you could do about this other than pinning the item/program in Quick Launch on the takbar itself instead. This way you could run it from the taskbar instead of Quick Launch.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

A:Dial-Up Shortcut from Quick Launch or Taskbar in Windows 8

Hello Skippy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since the shortcut uses the {BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E} GUID, you might see if creating a shortcut using either location below may work for you to then add to Quick Launch or Pin to taskbar.
explorer.exe /e,::{BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

explorer shell:::{BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}
If that doesn't work for you, then you could open Network Connections, right click on the dial-up network connection, and click on Create shortcut. This will place a shortcut of it on your desktop than can then be place in Quick Launch.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

So lets say you have a program open, and its not pinned to the taskbar, calculator for example. You close it, and the animation for the programs icon on the taskbar disappears smoothly. Now, if I pin the calculator onto the taskbar and open it (or any current taskbar pinned item) and close it, the icon disappears with a sort of a chunky, or "blocky" animation leaving just the normal taskbar icon.

My question is, should this happen or is my Windows install lagging somehow? Can anyone recreate this and see if you get a similiar result? Simply, non taskbar pinned apps icons seem to close smoother, while ones that are pinned dont really have an animation and just close with maybe 3 different frames.

A:Quick Question About Closing Apps/ Taskbar (Could someone test this? )

Hello Keyes,

This would be the Animations in the taskbar visual effects setting. It's normal for there to be a slight delay with the animation. If it's to long or jagged, then you may have something else running that's using a lot of resources causing a temporary longer delay for this.

If you like, you could turn off (uncheck) this setting to have them be instant instead.

Hi,

The image below shows my current taskbar when I open a window that has a quick-launch icon (e.g. Opera) as you can see it combines the window and the quick-launch icon together however I would like it to create a separate taskbar item rather than doing this. Would this be possible? Are there any programs that fix this? Sorry if this seems like a vague question but it's quite hard to explain when I can't actually show what I want it to look like.

Thanks .

Hi everyone!

I joined this community to get a solution to my problem that came up yesterday. I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. In the course of my work, my taskbar buttons for my running programs suddenly disappeared. The quick launch icons all showed and expanded to the right with the dotted separator beside the start button visible but the second dotted separator after the last quick launch icon which you can drag also disappeared. System restore did not work and always resulted in errors. Now, I'm just using alt+tab to change windows but I'm not used to it and is uncomfortable for me.

Any suggestions Friends on what I should do? I hope you can help me with my problem.

I installed Quick Launch on my Taskbar (Windows 7, 64-bit).

I don't know how to position it next to the Start button.

The area in the Taskbar between the Start button and the Quick Launch toolbar appears to be reserved to display open applications.

Dragging the Quick Launch toolbar all the way to the left doesn't work. It stops 2 inches from the Start button, allowing room for open application icons.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks.

What is the tweak to get rid of the "Now connected to _____" balloon? Thanks!

A:How to get rid of pop-up balloons in XP?

Method 1. Download and install XP Power Toys. Once you have it installed, go to Taskbar and uncheck "Enable Balloon Tips."

Method 2. You can perform a registry tweak.

The Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Create a new DWORD value, name it EnableBalloonTips, and set it equal to 0. If EnableBalloonTips is already there and equal to 1, set it equal to 0. Quit the registry editor, log off, and log back on. Voila! Your computer will stop talking down to you.

Bonus:

You want to know the coolest new thing about the Windows XP registry? It's the ultimate convenience for power users. Windows XP registry comes with a favorites menu. Now you can tweak and nudge and bump without having to keep a list of keys stashed around.

The title might not be the correct terminology. I am referring to the little window that pops up when you place your mouse pointer on the subject line in a forum such as this one.

I would like to eliminate this thing as it is a nuisance. Can you give me any information on taking this message window out?

Hello there ^^

Yesterday I had a few problems with the computer freezing. At one point, just af the computer was turning on, I got a pop-up balloon, sadly I only saw it a second, not having time too read it fully, and I am very certain that it will help me to figure out my problem.

So, my question is, does anyone know a list of all Windows pop-up balloons?

I know that I will recognice the one I it got as soon as I see it. Being something about my USB ports.

A:List Of Pop-up Balloons?

How about we approach this from a different angel. Would please look in the Event Viewer and post the error codes that are showing at the time that you are getting these pop-ups.

Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Event Viewer. Be sure that you are looking at the System error records. The error will appear in the left margin, they look like a red dot with a white X inside. At the top of the columns there are titles for each, the Event column is the one that you want. When you find an error follow across to the Event column and right click on the number, choose Properties in the drop down menu, another page will open with a description of the error. Please post the error codes (the number showing in the Event column) and the descriptions.

Another thing to try is to use the Pause/Break key. When you start your computer put you finger on the Pause/Break key (it should be the last key in the top row if this is a normal keyboard) as soon as you see the message press the key and it should hold it so that you can read it. Please post what that message is exactly.

I have just upgraded to XP and am already very irritated by the little balloon messages that just pop up. For instance, there's one that pops up every time I start up, that says I have updates waiting to be installed. I checked, and the updates were about French grammer or some such, but every time I start up, there's that balloon again. Then today there was a balloon asking me if I wanted it to remove some of my desktop icons. How do I turn these things off, so they quit popping up?

Are you talking about the balloon tips on your taskbar at the bottom right?
If so, the most direct way I can think of restoring them is downloading TweakUI.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/D...powertoys.mspx
(The download is in the right column).
After you install it, go to start, (all) programs, powertoys for Windows XP, TweakUI. Go to Taskbar and Start Menu and check the box enable balloon tips.
There may be a more direct way if you know the exact registry key off the top of your head though

Hello,
To Disable The Notification Area Balloon Tips

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
2. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

3. Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips.
4. Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0.
5. Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.

These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for this user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

Hope this helps

At what point in it's scan does DSS error out? Temp Files, Event Logs, etc...? You should be able to tell from the DSS status box which is open while it's running.

BALLOONS POPUP WANTED

A few years back I used a software that would produce
a balloon popup when the mouse passed on a file or folder in wich you could detail the use or content of any file or folder.

I would like to find this software for I found it very
practicle to help remember what the heck this file or folder is good for.
Anybody knows what software it is and where can i get it.

Madpegleg

A:Balloons popup software wanted

I wrote one called TipOff

Since it's a shell extension it only works in 32 bit windows. The way around it may be to use a 32 bit File Manager such as Free Commander.

It uses the Windows ToolTip shell extension. For this reason it can't be set to work with every file. It has to be registered per file type. It supports these file types:
.7z .arc, .arj, .cab, .exe, .gif, .gz, .jpg, .lzh,
.msi, .rar, .rpm, .tar, .tgz, .txt, .Z, and .zip

The idea was to add comments to downloads.

Hello again.

I have seen the sticky text for turning off notification balloons but cannot seem to locate it. I saw a thread on it which became confusing. And I saw the youtube but prefer to have the text in hand so as not to make any mistakes.

The one thread seems to indicate there is a problem finding the 'advanced' path mentioned.

Please add any clarification you have since these things have been posted.

I'm about to do a disk backup just in case of an error.

A:[SOLVED] turn off notification balloons

The sticky might have been removed. This should help you.

How do I disable balloon tips in the notification area in Windows XP or Vista?

There are all manner of registry modifications for turning these tooltips off it appears, and yet I still cannot turn off the quick-launch and taskbar button info tips. In the system tray the notifiers are a different matter and can be turned off.

So I would like to know where these things are stored and how they get there.

For example in Notepad which I have on the quick-launch bar I get "Creates and edits text files using basic text formatting." if I pause the mouse over the Notepad icon.

So where are the words "Creates and edits text files using basic text formatting." stored? Which file(s) are they lurking in and how can we all totally remove ALL of this infotips/tooltiops/balloon tips from our operating systems forever?

Someone must know the answer.

OR... is there a mechanism in the mouse pointer which will prevent the mouse from bringing these tips up?

I have created a flowchart in one of my powerpoint slides that references several products and how they work together. I would like to be able to move my mouse over each item, (basically a text box), and upon doing so have a text balloon appear that explains the basic features of the particular product represented in the text box. Action settings under PowerPoint does not appear to allow for this option and Microsoft's on-line tech support does not seem to address this option. Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Hi all new member here Upgraded from XP GB to file restore size balloons 2+ System a week ago and now playing with for the first time I pulled the trigger completely so no going back So System restore file size balloons to 2+ GB far I really like it but System restore file size balloons to 2+ GB need to get more comfortable with it Problem is my system restore points are ballooning and squeezing out old restore points Example I had roughly points after manually creating each one when I was doing my initial software installs A day later I looked and they were all gone except for point which had ballooned to fit my entire allocation or at the time So this point killed all my previous points And I can't understand how this happened So I upped system restore to GB to test what's going on and now I'm consistently seeing GB sized restore points vs a couple hundred megs which is what I expect The thing I can't abide is my restore points getting squeezed out for new ones Maybe or but not all of them for a single massive one that's auto generated by the system Any ideas on what's going on Thanks EDIT I've just confirmed that my system restore function is actually fluid the restore points grow I turned off restore deleted all points and rebooted Then I manually created a single new point as a baseline It started out as MB And continues to grow even as I check mail or open up my browser Now that same single restore point is MB So I can understand why I developed huge restore points especially as I was playing around with installing things etc The problem continues to be that a the individual restore point files can grow to be huge GB and b the huge files push out old restore points I'm curious if this is by design or an actual flaw I don't want my restore points to grow or be fluid I want them to be a snapshot in time that I can revert back to in case I mess things up Gold star to anyone that can turn the quot fluidity quot off Thanks

A:System restore file size balloons to 2+ GB

What you are seeing sounds like Previous Versions is what is causing the size to increase. Previous Versions is what System Restore is to system files but for all files. Every change that is made to a file is recorded and saved. I do not know of a way to turn off Previous Versions and keep System Restore.

I'm operating on an outdated machine and recently had Windows installed when support for XP ran out I also had a new hard drive installed and moved all my data to it while leaving only the OS on the main drive hoping to improve performance A few months ago I noticed that performance started to drop at random times I eventually discovered that it seemed to be tied to an instance of svchost exe becoming increasingly huge until the flimsy gigabytes of operating RAM I'm working with began to choke I have huge balloons issues svchost.exe up causes performance and no real idea of what the process is svchost.exe balloons up and causes huge performance issues tied to or what's causing it to behave like this It sometimes occurs svchost.exe balloons up and causes huge performance issues when I'm watching videos browsing Firefox or playing World of Warcraft and each time it affects performance rather violently Usually it eventually subsides but I have no idea why I don't know if this is a virus or simply a crappy program leaking memory I've seen it go up to gig of processing power in the task manager My computer runs worse now than it did before the upgrade and it's a pain in the neck I had planned to simply post a Hijackthis log and have people in the know tell me what doesn't belong but apparently that is verboten

How on earth do I remove those annoying little balloons/windows that appear when I keeps my mouse pointer over something for a second or two?

Unlike many, I find the notify balloons of the system tray useful, especially with certain applications I have that make use of them (Winamp, uTorrent, etc).

Anyway, they never work for me. I installed vista many times over and the balloons only work at the early stages of the system, then something is installed or updated and they just stop working.

I have checked all the needed registry settings, tried all the variations of them: and that's not the problem unfortunately.

The thing is, as the title says: when I deliberately kill explorer and restart it, the notify balloons start working!

How so? Why don't they work right from startup then?
What happens when you kill and restart explorer that gets them working?
Any ideas?

A:Notify Balloons won't work unless Explorer is killed and restarted

Welcome
I will assume that you mean the UAC notices. Notices that ask are you sure etc?. The notice that forces you to give approval for changes that affect the entire system and not just an individual user account.
If so make sure that it is turned on

I'm reviewing a table in Word and the balloons are so far to the left, that are partially blocking the text. Is there a way to move them (I don't want to hide them).?

A:Solved: How to move track changes balloons in Word 2003?

Hi caliaa,
You can change their width, which might be all you need. You can also choose whether they're on the left or right side of the page.
Go to Tools/Track Changes to get the Reviewing Toolbar.
On the toolbar, click Show and then Options.

There are options for the Balloons near the bottom of the Options pane. Hope that helps.

A:Trojan/malware Spam Popups And Fake Virus Balloons

Hello Harrisn, I am SifuMike and I will be helping you. I see some bad items in your log, so let's run these scans. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan. Disable your antivirus program and go here to run BitDefender Online Scan. Click on I Agree. Avoid clicking on other links as you don't need to try out the full install at this point, just the online scanner. When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan". Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer. NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat the BitDefender Online Scan. When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here. Post the BitDefender log.******************Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5.After download, double click on the file to launch the install process. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update successful" message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". (Note: When run in safe mode, sometimes the GUI is larger than the screen and the buttons at the bottom are partly or completely hidden, making them unaccessible for doing a scan. If this is the case, press the WINKEY + M key to "Minimize" the AVG display. Then right-click on AVG in the Task Bar and select "Maximize". If that does not help, then you may have to run your scan in normal mode and advise your helper afterwards.)Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate reports" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.Click "Complete System Scan" to start. When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there. You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop.
A copy of each report will also be saved in C:... Read more

I am wondering if there is a way to make a popup for an application (balloon, notification, etc) from the system tray to stay open until the user manually closes it? I know that you can adjust the timing of how long they stay up but we have an application that we want a popup indicating a new communication to stay open on the desktop until the user closes it. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

A:Force popup balloons and notificaitons to stay open until user closes

You can set them to stay open (until user clicks close) for a maximum of 136 years. I suppose that's long enough.

Notifications - Change How Long to Stay Open

Option Two = Step 6

Time in seconds. For 136 years try 4294967295 seconds.

yup, one of those. it doesn't seem to be messing with anything but who knows. it's taking cpu juice and making my fan run higher.
i've tried the various malwarebites, microsoft scan, and one other with the ccleaner afterwords. nothing worked. i was on a different thread and read about combo fix. i ran it and the problem seemed to go away. back in non safe mode the tray icon was gone but my comodo security kept updating over and over and didn't recognize previously trusted apps and programs on startup. i tried to uninstall comodo to reinstall fresh and the fake icon came back.
i ran combofix in safemode and here's the log. please help me get rid of the stupid thing entirely.
thanks

Hello, Welcome to TSF.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

Please do not install or uninstall any programs, or run any other scanners or software, unless I specifically ask you to do so. Also please copy and paste logs into the thread, rather than add them as attachments.
===

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

rkill.exe
rkill.com
rkill.scr

It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested on another computer and then transfer them to the desktop of the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive.
===

You may now be able to download and run this tool.
Post the log if you can.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.[list]
alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.

If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

An explination would be very helpfull Thanks in advance.

A:[resolved] Quick question hopefully quick answer

I am 99% sure you got what you ordered. Go to start, run, and type in 'dxdiag'. It should say on the first page for sure what you have.

Hello, I'm running a Dell Latitude D500 w/XP Pro and have installed SP. Now, everytime I boot I get this balloon that tells me my computer may be at risk. The thing is, it isn't. And if it was, I hate the balloons along with others that tell me other things.
The question, how do I shut that thing off? I can't find it anywhere in the Windows Security Alert section or Security Alerts section. Does anyone of you pros know how?
Thanks so much and may God bless you all!!
Peter

Helpful "balloons" appear on my "XP Pro" computer when the connection to the Internet is active. Likewise, when my wireless network (sp?) has activated. However, this does not occur on my "Ws 7" computer. Consequently, I have to guess when I can begin using the Internet or my network.

Perhaps I am missing an alternate way that this info is conveyed?
