I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I love XP. It's so user friendly. When I insert blank media, it asks me...

Then all I have to do is drag and drop my data into the window it opens and click, "Write these files to CD". It opens up the Wizard, blah blah blah, a minute later my CD-R pops out. Done.

HOWEVER, when I insert a blank DVD, it gives me the same "What do I do" window shown above, I open a window and when I try to drag a file over to it (any file), it's gives me this error...

I can hit Retry a million times.

Windows XP Professional
AMD Athlon XP2000+ @ 1.66GHz
1 GB RAM
2 Maxtor 100 GB HDs
Emprex Dual Layer DVD+-RW / CD-RW
ZIP 100 (LOL I know, whatever)

I tried installing NERO v5.0, but it didn't work.

Any ideas?

Are you trying to burn a media file, or copy a dvd? I can not tell you how to copy a dvd, as it is not condoned by techspot, adn frankly, I don't know how to. Although, try download.com, and look for a dvd burner (usually free trials) and make sure you have a dvd-r/rw.

At the suggestion of a senior member, I'm moving this from another thread...

My DVD-RW drive suddenly (after I'd burned many DVDs and CDs over the past year or so) decided it was just a CD drive. I stumbled around and figured out how to get it to burn CDs (had to check an option in Properties), but it won't burn DVDs. When I go into the Properties dialog, it seems to be defaulting to just a CD drive. If I try to select a different hardware type for it, it ignores my selection (when I click OK then open Properties again, the previous setting is shown).

Any ideas?

And I do have Nero, which I've heard is sometimes the culprit for mysterious CD/DVD drive changes. Should I ditch Nero entirely? Or is there a way to cripple it just enough to stop it from messing with my stuff?

A:DVD-RW will burn CDs, but not DVDs

Try this little app:

http://dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

If that doesn't do it go into Device Manager, find your burner, right click-> uninstall then reboot. If all this fails buy a new one.

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite p25-s507 with XP Home sp2.

The event viewer is giving me these error messages:
\Device\CDRom0. has a bad block
NTMSEVT.dll
NETEVENT.dll

Hi, I have a dell inspirion 700m laptop, using XP home edition SP2, it has a sony DVD+RWdw-R56A drive on it and it will not recognize blank DVD disks at all, I have tried imitation+R and phillips-R disks. It does however play DVDs and CDs just fine. It does a little better with CD burning, it will recognize the blank CDs and burn them without any errors popping up, but when I try playing them they will only play the first few tracks and someitmes those skip. When I look at the actual burnt disk it has this ring that is about 3/4" from the center of the disk. It used to work just fine about 6 months ago. I updated the firmware and even tired uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but same problem. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Blank disks are recognized, but after a "sucessful" burn, the burner and one other DVD player (attached to TV) just give message "no disc inserted." I tried a second, identical burner (bought it for my son), and got the same results. Can anyone help me get this burner to burn?

As far as I understand you can burn the DVD and at the end it gives you error message -or- you cant burn one at all? In any situation try to update the drivers for the burner.
Also it is good if you provide us with the specs of the PC in question. OS, CPU, RAM,... and any specs about the problem area.

A:Cant burn DVDs!

How old is the drive. How much use has it had?
Optical drives are famous for early failures. DVD drives seldom last a year... much less if heavily used. Sony drives are not known for reliability.
Replacing the driver for $25 to $35 is probably an easier choice than trying to fix that one. Plextor, Yamaha, Samsung, LG and LiteOn are all more reliable for DVD burning than that Sony.
Three laser circuits to burn out or go out of alignment. Drive belts and wheels to wear or slip. When you stop using your Sony, tear it apart to see how much there is to fail from heat or wear.

The problem I have is converting the AVI, Quicktime, and MPG files into the proper format. I'm also looking for something that will allow me to author the title screens and such. It the app can cut or place chapters for me, that would be cool but not required.

The cheaper, in price, the better. BTW...Roxio Easy CD/DVD creator 6 has some serious beef with my PC and is totally out of the question.

A:What do you use to burn DVDs?

Pinnacle's Studio 9 or Nero Ultra will do what you need. You will need a device to connect between the VCR and the PC. I use the Dazzle 80 (works fine for me) also from Pinnacle. You will need a lot of space on your hard drive. The average movie that runs around 120 minuets will take over 6G of space. You might check on e-bay or other discount stores and find the programs and converter
I use the Studio 9 to load the material into the hard drive and Nero to burn it to the DVD burner. Nero will no it all but is a little harder to use.

A:how do u burn DVDS?

You want to make a copy of a DVD? You won't be able to do that to actual movie DVD's (that you bought at the store) because they got a bleep load of "copyright" protection burnt into the DVD so it wouldn't work.

However if you want to burn a copy of a DVD your burned it shouldn't be that hard. I've never really used Nero but try looking for DVD burn 'on the fly.'

But do you have 2 DVD drives? With one of them being a DVD-Burner? Also you'll need the same format disc I think. Like if the first one is a DVD+R you'll most likely need a DVD+R for the 2nd copy when you burn it.

Any suggestions, and would I need a new burner?

It appears that neither one of my DVD drives will even detect that there is a CD/DVD in the drive now, it will not autorun or anything, it says there is a CD, but it says that the total size and size remaining is 0.

After installing XP SP3 in my desktop and in my laptop, I attempted a DVD+RW burn moving files using Windows Explorer and immediately ruined the disk. The disk shows full with only one file of zero bytes labeled Non-Allocatable Space. This file cannot be deleted. I have ruined several disks in ineffective troubleshooting. Both computers exhibit similar characteristics and I cannot erase nor format this disk in either computer. This problem is not evident in writing to a CD-R, it is limited to DVD burning.
Microsoft finally took control of my desktop and worked diligently with the computer for over an hour. Their troubleshooting process included the deletion of Nero and Roxio programs to no avail. The assigned tech finally had to turn it over to Research for further troubleshooting which has not yet happened.
To briefly summarize, I can burn a CD but cannot burn a DVD in either computer. Inputs anyone?

had a dvd rw installed am clueless on how to mount and burn nero burning smart and alcohol is installed

A:how to mount and burn dvds

Your question is a bit ambiguous.

Mounting and burning are 2 different things so can you explain exactly what you want to do in a little more detail please?

In general Mounting means inserting a disc into a drive and making it accessible, or with a virtual DVD drive mounting is the same idea but you LOAD a DVD image into virtual drive software to make it accessible.

And obviously burning means to burn the data to a recordable DVD media.

I have a windows 8 laptop. It's a few years old. It has always worked great until recently. I cannot burn DVDs or CDs anymore. It plays them fine. It's a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-B08AB drive. When I look at the driver it says Windows did not start a related device driver. To learn more, click the Driver tab and then click Driver Details. It says the driver has the current software. If I'm trying to burn a cd sometimes it will burn around half of the songs and then say there's an error. Sometimes it plays those songs and sometimes it doesn't. It did let me make a Blueray DVD once recently that played fine but nothing since then. I've tried multiple programs for burning a DVD or CD and no luck so far. Are there any programs that would clash with the drive? Any suggestions?

A:Can't burn DVDs or CDs anymore

If you right click the device in Device Manager->General tab. What is the device status? Is it working or is there an error code number?

Download and run Filter Load Order Tool. Select your drive. Click Clipboard the paste the result into next post

So I tried using Ashampoo Move Shrink & Burn 3, which burnt the movie (2.5 hr movie when the DVD rom only held 2 hrs) to 2 discs, which worked really well - except it came with no sound. Tried everything to fix it, but to no avail.

DVD Flick is apparently capable of burning a movie to 2 DVDs, but I have no idea how - can't find any settings or anything anywhere.

If anyone knows how to burn a movie to 2 DVDs with sound, help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,

You should able to burn a 2.5 hour movie on one disc with good quality, unless you have a really high end very large screen TV.

Hello everyone!

I have a big *.ISO ( 5.1GB ) and now I want to burn it into 2 DVDs which I can setup by insert the DVD #1.

How can I do that like a game DVD ?

And 1 more question:
If I split that *.ISO into 2 parts of using WinRAR then burn them on each DVD, then can I extract the DVD#1 in processing ? ( *mean: the computer may require DVD #2 to continue )

Thank for read and reply!

There are quite a few pitfalls of doing it that way. Does your hardware (DVD burner) support Dual layer dvd burning? If so thats the way to go.

I am having problems with my burner/drive. I am trying to burn a dvd with nero8. I had previously had roxio but i removed it and later used roxizap to try to "superclean" my system. Nero goes thru the process as though it is burning but when it appears to be writing the lead-ins it just hums about every 15 seconds and the burner door doesn't even respond. after closing nero, the cd/dvd drive disappears from the my computer window. It only reppears after I restart the computer. I have tried the regedit approach but I don't seem to have the upper/lower text available to delete. Below is a copy of what is there:

As far as ripping and shrinking a DVD, are there any freeware programs that will do both, or am I going to have to use two separate programs?

If you are trying ot backup movies then it is the copy protection that is causing the failure. another thing that can cause failures is the Burner operating in PIO mode instead of DMA. you can check what mode the burner is using in device manger under IDE ATA|ATAPI Controllers. look under the advanced tab on the channel the drive is on.

A:Suddenly cannot burn DVDs

Was each test with the same file(s) selected?

I've not burned using that process. Are you creating data discs (ie: DVD with avi/mpeg/mkv files on it) or a video disc (ie: video files are converted to a DVD video disc for use in a standalone player)?

Assuming you are making a DVD video, and based on how quickly it fails, it's likely not a "burn" issue at all, but a problem with one of the selected video files which cannot be converted.

Does anyone use Toast 9 for saving files to DVDs? I just purchased a LaCie d2 DVD/RW Drive, and need some help ...

Several years back I tried burning DVDs using the internal DVD drive on my iBook, and what happened is that everytime I burned files to the DVDs, I couldn't go back and add more files. So I was only able to save files one time, then the DVD was no longer usable for burning files.

I know there is a setting that will allow you to continue saving a few files at a time. How exactly do I do that?

Would that be the Write Session mode?

A:How to burn dvds from the internet

Now, I'm assume you are downloading the 'DVD-Ripped' AVI files off the internet, using the vuze software?
If so, these AVI files are either DivX or Xvid encoded during the ripping process and are essentially DivX or Xvid files.
Some can also be of the MP4 file type.

On the computer, with a few essential codecs and software installed, you'll never have a problem playing those files but this is not the case with DVD players.
Your DVD player must support DivX/Xvid and/or MP4 files, to play the movies you have downloaded.

Alternatively, you can convert the files you have downloaded into the DVD format (AVI -> DVD conversion) using any third-party software, following which you can burn it as a movie onto a DVD.

whenever i download a movie (legally) and burn it, it seems like it takes way longer than it should, close to an hour. I have a blu-ray burner, so i would think that regular movies would burn much faster. Does the software have anythign to do with the speed? I am just using windows dvd maker to burn it?

A:dvds burn very slow

I don't have any Blue Ray. But it's pretty much universal that you control the burning speed through the writer application.
Check the Windows DVD maker for setting the burn speed.
Or are you talking about the whole process from dropping the movie into the DVD maker until the ready DVD comes back out?
In that case the timings seem reasonable (especially if the DVD maker has to demux and then re-encode and remux the film material)
Let's say you drop in any AVI and expect to get a standard DVD which is playable on about any DVD player
The AVI first gets demuxed (split into its Audio and Video tracks) then the videotrack gets converted to an MPEG2 file, reunited with the audio file(s) and formated into a valid DVD structure (IFO/VOB) and only after that all has been done the actual burning process takes place.Which means the total time depends on the movie's length, your computer's calculation power, amount of RAM and the quality settings for the output.
If you take all that into consideration, like I said, 1hr seems reasonable on a modern computer. On a singlecore comp I usually had times up to and over twice the movie length.

If you need more specific info or tips, try to explain as exact as possible what formats you are using and what exactly you expect to come out of it.

The hardware is a Sony DVD+/-RW DW-D56A on a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. Dell told me this is a software issue, not a hardware issue, so my warranty doesn't cover it. I'd have to pay $80 for them to tell me how to fix it (not happening), but they did give me a clue.

The problem is that the drive won't burn DVDs. It will, however, burn CDs and read both CDs and DVDs. (Hence this is a software issue rather than hardware.)

Dell support suggested there is a problem with Upper and Lower filters in the registry and that I would have to edit the registry. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks a bunch!

Before anything else, I'm not looking to copy DVDs. I have a bunch of video files on my PC that I've created, and I want to place them on a DVD so that I can view them on a set-top DVD player.

I've been using After Effects and Premiere for quite a while and my video projects have filled up one of my 120 gig Hard drives, though I still have an extra 160 to spare.

This system, which runs 32-bit Vista Home Premium, came with Roxio Creator, which I used a few times to burn DVDs, before it started freezing every time I hit the "Burn" button. Assuming that the problem lay with that particular software, I deleted it and installed ULead MovieFactory, which to my consternation is doing the exact same thing Roxio was: it lets me add videos to my project, create the menus, etc., all without a problem, but at the final step, when I hit the "Burn" button, MovieFactory freezes in an eerie imitation of Roxio. Am I right in now assuming the problem is the computer, and not the DVD-authoring software?

My dvd writer will read and play dvds and cds, also will burn cds,but will not burn a dvd. When I try it freezes my computer, refuses to shut off.
Ive checked the device manager, installed different burning software, uninstalled both the cd and dvd from the device manager so it would reinstall.
I have a service contract thru Circuit City but they want me to do a system recovery and then I would have to reinstall programs that I cant do without help.
Is there any other solutions?

This system, which runs 32-bit Vista Home Premium, came with Roxio Creator, which I used a few times to burn DVDs, before it started freezing every time I hit the "Burn" button. Assuming that the problem lay with that particular software, I deleted it and installed ULead MovieFactory, which to my consternation is doing the exact same thing Roxio was: it lets me add videos to my project, create the menus, etc., all without a problem, but at the final step, when I hit the "Burn" button, MovieFactory freezes in an eerie imitation of Roxio.

Since both software packages present the same problem, I can only assume the problems lies with Vista. I have no idea how to go about solving this and I would appreciate any help anyone could offer.

I have a Sony DVD-RW DRU-710A that will not burn files onto any format of DVD (-R,+R,-RW,+RW), but only onto CDs. I have been using Nero 6 successfully with CDs. But when I try DVDs, at the start of the burning prompt, the program informs me that it cannot proceed because I have to use a CD, not a DVD. How can I solve this?

A:Sony DVD-RW DRU-710A will not burn onto DVDs, only CDs.

ae you using the full nero burning rom or Nero express? if it is Express then make sure that in the drop down menu for recorders that the burner listed is for DVD not CDRW. as I recall nero express in version 6 always had two listings for the same burner one for DVD and one for CDRW.

Hey, hoping someone can help. I cant burn CD's or DVD's, at all. It comes back with an error 380136-24-0000000. I looked for this on various search engines and came across a microsoft fix but when i run the fix, the fix itself gets an error haha. So i done it the old fashioned 'do it yourself' way, removing the upper and lower thing in the registry but that has not helped.

I have tried a few burning programmes but none of them work. But as i say, the DVD player plays DVDs. Its really confusing me so any help would be really appreciated.

I have a Toshiba L300-20D and windows Vista 32 bit.

Thanks in advance folks

A:Get an ERROR CODE when i try to burn DVDs

Make sure you have the latest XP SP2-compatible version of Nero. Being a registered user, you should be able to DL the upgrade if any from the Nero site for free.

Secondly, I have never had success with the burn-at-once mode on Nero. With it off, you will have to have room on your hard drive for the transcoded files (usually 5 GB if you are burning a full 4.7 GB set of files), but the burn process takes about the same amt. of time. But every time I tried burn-at-once, I got errors.

A:Unable to Burn Recordable DVDs - Seen as CDs

Ways I have used to correct DVD/CD burning problems

Have found several reasons that you can not record properly:
1.

According to the symptom, the issue is likely related to certain registry
key(s) loaded by CD-burning software; for example, Easy CD Creator or
DirectCD. You may perform the following steps to isolate it:

1. Run Regedt32.exe.

2. Locate the 'UpperFilters' value under the following key in the registry,
and delete it:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11

CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

3. Locate the 'LowerFilters' value under the same key, and delete it:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11

CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

4. Close the registry editor and restart the computer.

-----------------------------------------------------------

caution:
I have to delete some registry keys to get my cd-rom and virtual cd back.
For more information please refer the KB article:
CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

But your 3rd party cd recording software won't work properly after your deleting
the registry keys. Please be aware of thatClick to expand...

2. Depends on what your Burning Program is it might not be compatible with the meda.. due to size setting on burner program(reduce overburn)... and some times if you have more than 1 program installed this causes the problem.

2a. If you use or have used Roxio and Nero... they do interact with ea other.
the best know was to solve was install Roxio last...
3. Using Dr. Divx has also been noted as a problem.

I was wondering if someone could help me. I just purchased this dvd burner. The problem I am having is that I was able to burn a video dvd with the bonus light scribe disc that came with the burner. I then went to use the dvd-r's I had left over from before my last burner died. It would not record to the dvd-r's. It would encode the video to my harddrive but when it shouls open up and begin the writing process it fails every time. tried with 5 different dvd's but of same variety. Checked specs and it says it is both dvd+ and dvd-. Anyone have any ideas. Doesn't really pop up with an error message just tells me process failed. Thanks

Nero Version: 6.6.0.14
Windows XP Pro Version 2002

Originally, every once in a while a DVD might not work. Now one works out of many bad burns. I hate to keep putting more in the tray just to waste it.

The primary and secondary IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers have disabled drivers. Nothing I do enables the drivers. I don't know if this problem is related or not.

I've attached the Nero report from my last burn attempt. Please note I had tried a slower burn rate (12x - it didn't help).

I don't see how to download an update to Nero without buying their latest version. Is this correct?

A:How do I BURN large ISO files into MULTIPLE CDs (not DVDs)

CDs are not enough for a Windows 7 installer, you need to use a DVD drive, or a pendrive with at least 3GB free for it, as it won't fit in a smaller drive at all.

More generally, ISO files are an exact image of the final disc when burned, it cannot be splited into smaller discs. Moreover, the Windows installer is not aware of a "split installer" and won't know how to switch discs at all. A CD drive is not enough to support a Windows 7 installer.

A:Why can I not burn DVDs that play in my standalone DVD player?

Is this the first time using 16x discs? If so, is your burner rated for 16x discs? If not you may need to update the firmware of the drive.

Also if the player is a recent Divx compatible player, any .avi encoded with either the divx or xvid codec should play. So your avi files might already be compatible without conversion to DVD-compatibility, but that doesn't solve your underlying problem I don't think, just makes the process of going from file to DVD playback quicker and easier.

ok i got ulead mf4 and i have a mpeg2-dvd format file right and i load it up and do all my stuff and hit the burn button. It does all the finalize VOB and video/auido sync and whatever when it gets to the end which is the actual burning of the dvd to the disc the program freezes my computer and nothing happens and im forced to restart. I tried it several times and same thing, but one time it came back saying "Burner being used by another process!" when i no it is not. I can't seem to find a way to fix it. BTW using MCE 05 and UMF4 is version 4.02 i updated it with no luck. suggestions appreciated!

Hello everyone. my name is Adrian, i recently purchased a gateway gt5228 desktop with the windows 7 upgrade. It all works great but it has one problem, the dvd rw/cd rw drive can read dvds just fine but will not burn. the drive is a lite-on combo sohc-4832k ata device. Windows dvd maker says "a dvd burner was not found. make sure a dvd burner is connected and installed, and then try again". This same program wont even recognize the drive, however other software like nero, recognizes the drive just not that its a recordable drive. I've been researching this problem for awhile now and have found that many people have this problem but have not seen a solution anywhere. Id really appreciate your help so i can get to burning some family home videos. Thank you very much in advance. any i mean any help is greatly appreciated.
