CDs, DVDs now playing too fast

Q: CDs, DVDs now playing too fast

Since sometime last night, I've had a problem on my computer - the two CD/DVD drives I have on my computer are running at far too fast a speed. This applies all sorts of different programs: iTunes 9.1, Windows Media 10, PowerDVD 7. With audio CDs on my D drive, it can play as much as six times faster on iTunes. It goes a little slower with PowerDVD and WMP, but still noticeably quick.

My D drive is a CD-RW/DVD combo which I purchased within the last two years, if that.
My E drive is just a CD-RW which is anywhere from 5-7 years old, and probably doesn't write anymore but still plays.

I'm wondering how both are all of a sudden not working properly. I just ran MBAM, and nothing came up. Currently running an anti-virus scan to see if that might be it. Anyone out there got a guess as to what's wrong?

Preferred Solution: CDs, DVDs now playing too fast

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If I am following your description correctly, you're saying the music is playing to the point that the lyrics are sounding like someone who has had too many Red Bull caffeine drinks?

Minor issue here. I have a lite on dvd recorder that came with a nero 6. Recently I upgraded to nero 7 ultra and now I notice that when I playback a burned dvd in my dvd player that it cannot fast forward over 2x the speed. It simply freezes up then return to the original menu. Before I could fast forward a scene up to 8x the speed(the maximum of my dvd player).
I tried changing the settings just before I burn my dvd. First making sure that it was a the maximum setting. Then i tried to change the write speed setting to 8x. No change. Like I said this is minor but I was wondering if this is a glitch with nero 7 ultra or did upgrading somehow change a setting or what? Thnks!

This is a minor issue but I have a external lite on that came with a nero 6. Recently I upgraded to nero 7 ultra. Now when I playback my burned dvd to my dvd player I notice that when I fast forward at anything more 2x the speed the dvd freezes then returns to the original menu. I never had this issue when I used my nero 6. I use to be able to fast forwarda burned dvd at 8x the speed, the maximum of my dvd player.
Except for this everything else seems to work fine. I tried changing the speed in the nero vision 4 just before burning. First I made sure that the write settings were on max. When that didn't work I tried setting the write speed to 8x. Still no change. Is this some glitch with nero 7 ultra or has my setting been some how changed when I upgraded?

A:Problems fast forwarding burned nero 7 ulta dvds

Are you still using the same media? Try changing to a different make of blank media and don't always assume that setting the write speed to max is a good idea!

Hey I recently upgraded to Vista bit service pack I held off because of a problem I was having DVDs playing not with service pack as I am about DVDs not playing to explain but I DVDs not playing thought service pack may have fixed the problem However it hasn't When I try to play a DVD through Windows Media Center it is just all fuzzy and static You can see the picture moving but it's so fuzzy and pixelated that it's impossible to actually make anything out When I play through Media Player the picture is just black The sound is working fine in both programs I downloaded a program called VLC media player and that plays the DVDs just fine so does this mean that it is a problem with codecs I'm not too sure hence why I'm asking here on how to fix the problem Obviously I could just keep using this new VLC player but I prefer using Media Center Thank you OS Vista Home Premium bit Graphics card NVIDIA Resolution x

Install the K-Lite Codec Pack PLUS the K-Lite Codec Pack 64-bit (you need both) and all your problems will be solved (hopefully).

I am working on trading/buying tennis matches with someone that lives in Europe, and he told me his DVDs are in the PAL system, but mine are in a different format. I did a search for "region" and saw a few posts but am still confused. I have a DVD recorder called a pioneer DVR-533H. I looked on the Pinoneer website and didn't see anything about regions there. Is there a way to switch back and forth between formats? I also have a computer DVD player, would this program actually work?

http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

I don't want to pay or trade for a bunch of matches and then have them not work b/c of a region difference. Just like they have outlet adapters I have to think there is a simple way to convert back and forth between the 2 formats.

A:Playing PAL DVDs in the US

the way I understand it, you would need a multi-system DVD player (able to convert a PAL signal to NTSC in the hardware) or a multi-system TV or monitor to play it (unlikely) The big problem is that your monitor and TV are only capable of playing a NTSC video signal - you need a video converter to change the signal to NTSC. After that, there is still the region issue, but there is software to get around that

DVDs have stopped working very suddenly. The DVD driver is recognised on "My Computer" and in Devices Manager it says that it is working properly, but the DVD itself is not recognised and will not play in media player or vlc. When I put a disc in, scanning noises continue for a very long time, then the DVD is ejected. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, cleaning the lens and rebooting, but nothing has worked. Thanks for any help.

Double click on "My Computer". Right click your drive icon, and click "Properties". Click on "AutoPlay" tab. Make sure the box is checked next to "Prompt me each time to choose an action". If it's checked already, click the box next to "Select an action to perform", and then click on button to "Restore Defaults".

I put a DVD in. I get the option to play the DVD using Windows Media Player. I choose it.
WMP throws me an error about needing Codecs, and I'm given a link where I can get them.
I am taken to Microsoft.com somewhere, which I can't find now, since I'm beyond that point.
It tells me I need to buy "one of the following softwares".
I choose the first one. It takes me here:
http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/cineplayer/decoder/overview.html

I buy it.
I install it.
I activate it.
Still won't play.
It says Playing (menu), but it's not playing anything.
In the right-hand column is a list of titles, 1 through 34.
I've tried double-clicking titles, nothing happens. I mean..it's obviously TRYING to do something, but it's not.\
It DOES show the DVD info top-right.
Screenshots available.
Help!!

And thanks.

Hi, My aim is to watch DVD's playing on my pc clearly on my TV screen. I Have a P4 2.0 Ghz processor with a NView Geforce MMX 440 Graphics card which has s-video out. My TV has a Composite plug. When I connect my pc to the TV it appears slightly grainy and does'nt fit the screen properly. When I play a DVD it does'nt look any clearer. My friends laptop plays DVDS very well on the same TV although the Desktop screen(when DVD program is closed) is a bit grainy. Is there anything I can do to get this to work properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Playing DVDs through pc on TV

TV's are actually much lower quality than computer monitors as your desktop will never look as good on a TV and on the monitor... The technology is moving forward where their will be a happy medium someday... Some top of the line HDTVs come with the VGA input in the back and are respectively close to the computer monitor.

Anyway... I'm not familiar with the Nvidia's TVouts but head into the video card's properties...
right click on desktop--->properties--->settings--->advanced. There should be a tab along the lines of Display where you manipulate the TV out settings... You can also go back to the settings sections... and change resolutions until you see an improvement.

With my ATI card I noticed a significant improvement when I upgraded to the latest drivers

Good luck

A:Colors Are Off Playing Dvds

does it only happen when you play a dvd? or is it when you're even just on your browser? if it happens all the time, then it is just the video card. if not, then it may be the dvd drive. you may want to check the connect it has to the mother board,

A:Trouble playing DVDs

hi there!
First of all, iam just a member who uses this forum since today. I will provide some information that might help with your problems, though note that iam not a professional and that i cant and wont give you a 100% secure solution! I will just try my best!

Reading through your post I think you have already reinstalled vista, so there shouldne be any unsaved personal files on you pc. If not, save them somewhere else if you can.

Getting drivers back for a laptop can be quite a hazard. First you should check the toshiba site and get all the help and drivers you can for you laptop!

If you still miss some functions, I would get drivermax. Its a programm that compares your drivers with the drivers from other people on the net. drivermax will upload your profile to its servers and it will upload any drivers, which are newer than the ones in their database.
Also you can check for the newest drivers for your hardware via drivermax and download them from their database, note that downloads are limited if you are a free member! The limit is 2 per day!

I personally use the software to check for new drivers and then, if I cant find them on the net myself (ie nVidia and ATI drivers are easy to find) I use drivermax.

Another nice thing about the software is that you can export copys of all your drivers from you pc, so you can easily import them with drivermax after a reinstall.

Hope the information helped a little!

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.

* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

I have a Sony Disc Camcorder which takes 8cm discs. All goes well until we try playing them on our DVD drive. This drive works fine with full size discs but struggles with these smaller ones. It either fails to detect a disc in the drive or hangs up half way through reading it. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the disc - it plays ok in an ordinary DVD player/TV combination.

I'm using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. The problem I have (and this has been going on for a while) is when putting in a dvd (any dvd not just one or two) the dvd will be recognized, load up and show me the "do not copy or distribute warning" but once it gets to the dvd menu the dvd becomes completely distorted (pixelated, everything spots turn to a bright green) and completely unviewable. It's not a gpu error seeing as how all games run fine. I can rip these movies without any errors and they playback fine. The disc drive never has any errors reading anything it just doesnt play dvds correctly. At first I thought it was my old disc drive so I bought a new LG dvd/cd drive but the errors remain. Codec error? Region error? Idk. Thanks for any help.

What software are you using. That sounds like some kind of digital rights managment, copyright protection yadda yadda yadda interfering with your ability to use the computer you paid your money for, and that someone should be compensating you financially for depriving you of the use of that hardware.

/rant.

Try using K-Lite and Media Player Classic.

I noticed that you run of windows 2000 so your computer is probably pretty old. Check your disk drive and make sure that it is a dvd drive not a cd drive. If it is a cd drive buy one like this (below) and get a guy at a computer shop to install it for you.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

I have a Dell E521 AMD 64 Athlon x2 that has a DVD/CD RW. Recently the DVD drive quit playing DVDs. It still reads & plays CDs with no problem and will even burn CDs & DVDs without an issue. But no movies will play in the drive at all, although I prefer Windows Media Player, no other program will work either.

Would someone be kind enough to help me figure out this problem?

Many thanks in advance!

[edit to add: I did a Windows repair and still no luck!]

A:WMP No longer playing DVDs

Ok...to add to the information provided already, I get an error signature window that opens

AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer:10.0.0.3802 ModName: soniclicensemanager.dll
ModVer: 3.1.1.4 Offset: 000108fc

After that info it states to view technical information about the error report "click here" but when the report comes up I cannot copy any of the info nor can I find that file that it states the report is being saved in, which is listed as follows:
C:\DOCUME~1\EARTH_~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ee7d_appcompat.txt

Do I need to post a HJT report as well to provide enough info to get someone to respond to this?

Sorry if duplicating; can't find "low tech" answer...
Our once-fine DVD/CD player is now not recognizing DVDs (under 'My Computer").

I used a Microsoft Help thread to 'fix' problem with CDs; they now are recognized & play (control panel, add new hdwr, sound vid game, eventually clearing the DMA check box). CDs play fine, but DVDs aren't.

There's no autorun for DVD player; I try to bring it up, it says "DVD player loading", then fritzes out with this msg in a window: "Another application is preventing DVD player". Once, it actually loaded, but then msg said display unabled(?). Most recently, am getting blue screens and reboot is very slow.

Another MS thread said possible virus? I ran Mcafee VirusScan, nothing shows. A very low technical answer is greatly appreciated.

Hello again,

My saga continues with getting all the kinks out of this newly constructed
desktop computer. All and all things are going well.

I still have one pesky problem. I can not get audio from when playing DVDs.
I can place an audio CD in the drive and I hear that just fine.

I am using the canned dvdplayer.exe from windows 2000.
I have installed every service pack and patch available from Microsoft based on there windows update tool.

I also get no audio when I use the MaXimus DVD player version 1.2

I know that it must be a codec problem. That is all I know though.

I have attached a copy of the information tool from Nero 6.0.
It is information overload for me.
Can anyone guide me in correcting this problem? This is the last step before I hand the computer over to its proud new owner. :giddy:

A:No Audio while playing DVDs

I see on that report you have a Roxio driver on your machin CDralW2k, Cdr4_2k
These files cause a conflict with Nero .You will need to go to Nero's site and read a bit on this issue and clean it up. They have utilities for this .
I would use the Nero Showtime as a player and uninstall your DVD player.
Turn off Autorun and point media files to start Nero
There is a update for nero to 6.6 You may want to do this after you clear the conflicts.

My parents currently don't have a DVD drive in their computer. They would like to get a DVD drive added to their computer to be able to play DVD movies. If I buy a new DVD drive and connect it using the IDE cable and audio cable to their computer, will they be able to play DVD movies from the drive?

Do they need an encoder card or anything like that? Or is there something else they'll need?

Thanks.

You probably won't need anything more than what comes with the player. Of course you'll want the appearance of what you are watching to be acceptable. Older machines can be a problem. What do they have for a system?

I reinstalled Windows Media Player, I have downloaded some new codecs. Still anytime I try to play a DVD my Windows Media Player gives me an error message. The player says there is an unknown DVD. Hi all,

I recently had to perform a complete re-installation of Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition due to a software error on my computer. Prior to the re-installation, my computer came with WinDVD preinstalled on the system so I could watch DVD movies using my computers DVD-ROM drive.

However, after the re-installation, I no longer have this software, nor would it seem, the appropriate DVD codecs for Windows Media Player.

Since I no longer have the system discs that came bundled with my computer, I was wondering whether free codecs were available for download to allow Windows Media Player play DVD's. I have noticed plugins available from the Microsoft website, however these cost money, and I would like to avoid incurring any additional charges.

If you have any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,

Michael.

A:Player freezes when playing DVDs

1. Make sure the DVDs are scrupulously clean - a single fingermark can cause malfunction.

2. Defragment your hard drive regularly if you often install/uninstall apps or delete files.

3. Run the error-checker on the C: drive (right-click > properties > tools > "check now"

4. Lastly, the laser-lens in the DVD drive may need cleaning. For this you'll need to buy a purpose-made cleaning disc for DVD drives.
make sure it's for computer DVD drives, as some of those made for standalone DVD Players are not suitable for computer DVD drives.

Nothing pops up to allow me to easily click play or anything like that. I put the DVD in, I goto the DVD Drive click it and it has it broken down into about 3 different things. Audio_TS, Video_TS and Jacket_TS

Yes, I can go in there find which file is the main folder and then play it, then it plays, but it is fairly annoying having to do this every time. Well, I've got a problem playing DVD movies in Windows Media Player, PowerDVD and InterActual Player. The only DVD program I've been able to play them successfully in is the PCFriendly player bundled on The Matrix DVD, and even then the screen noticeably moves up and down.

Every other type of movie will play fine in WMP, it's just the DVDs that don't work right. The programs will all crash right off the bat, iplayer.exe with the following error message:

Error signature:

What else is needed to determine what's causing this problem? Thanks a ton.

I have wmp11. Recently, my dvds will not play when using wmp11. This did not happen before. I have googled this topic and the error seems to relate to a codec problem. However, I have not uninstalled any codecs that i know of. I used microsoft's codec checking program and it lists one codec that i have that supposedly works with wmp11. That codec is from cyberlink with the filename CLVSD.ax. From my knowledge, I do not have any cyberlink products installed on my computer, so I do not know where it came from. I have also tried the xp codec pack. that did not help.

VLC player plays the dvd, but I would prefer if wmp11 could play them as well.

A:Audio problems playing DVDs

check in windows task manager the performance tab click it and check what memory is available for use by windows and cpu percentage available or being used...sitting at the desktop run the video and check again if memory is very low then your system needs more memory if the cpu percentage is high then to many of your programs are running that are not required to run,at start up of the pc.if the pc is hogging to much of the system resources then poor video play and display will result.
also make sure the dvd device is set for direct memory access

I have a Dell Latitude CPx laptop (model number PPX) with an Intel Pentium III processor, 497 MHz and 192 MB of RAM. It has both Windows xp and puppy linux on it (though I am less familiar with linux).

I'll be taking this laptop to university in less than three weeks' time and while it doesn't have a DVD drive, I'd like to be able to play DVDs on it (videos rather than data), so I'm interested in finding an external device I can plug into it, but don't know what exactly to look for. It has a USB 1 port and a slot for an Ethernet card which may or may not help.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hello everyone:) I am having a few problems with my nieces laptop when ever she watches dvd's,plays music, or the microsoft games the computer tends to freeze in the first 10 seconds of inserting a dvd or playing a game ect... Other than that the laptop is great. Here are some things thought you should know

System: Microsoft windows XP
Professional
version 2002
service pack 2

Computer: Intel Pentium III processor
746 MHz, 384 MB of ram

Any help would be apreciated thanks.

A:Lpatop freezes when playing dvds or music:(

Hi Julian24 and welcome to TSF

It seems to me that her laptop is going slow because of lack of Random Access Memory (RAM). 384 Mb of RAM only slighty hits over the minimum of RAM needed to run XP which is 128 Mb. Even though this is double of minimum she should upgrade to 512 Mb and this should fix the issue. RAM goes cheap these days so just look for laptop memory.

This is what laptop RAM looks like

Do you have DVD playing software installed? Windows media player does not have native DVD playing capability and only uses the codec from third party DVD playing utilities to play DVD's.

Previously I was using Windows Media Player 9 and DVDs were playing smoothly. But now, after formating my Hard Disk, I have installed Windows Media Player 10. But to my surprise, DVDs are not playing at all. What is the technique to play DVDs in Windows Media Player 10?
Secondly, please let me know how to delete Windows Media player 10 from The folder 'Program files' Thanking U.

You probably need a DVD decoder. You usually get them by installing a commercial player like PowerDVD etc.

Hey guys I have a blue screen related question Does anyone know what could cause a blue screen to pop up and my computer to basically shut down while trying to watch a DVD If I put this DVD in and start watching it not long into it I ll get a blue screen that says it s going into a phisical memory dump and my computer just stops I can t escape DVDs while memory Physical dump playing out of it or anything So I switch it off and start again and that s not where the trouble ends As soon as windows Physical memory dump while playing DVDs reboots and starts my computer won t stop churning over and as a result I can t get Internet Explorer AIM or any net related programs to start I have no idea why it continues chomping away but it does I can run Adaware and things like that but not IE This happened again yesterday and it s annoying as I don t know what s causing it Does anyone have any idea what on Physical memory dump while playing DVDs earth is wrong with my computer or how I can fix it I m running Windows XP but I don t really know what hardware I have in my computer at the moment It s only recently well in May June been upgraded to include more RAM and it had a complete clean out etc This problem has only been happening recently and it doesn t happen with all DVDs nbsp

A:Physical memory dump while playing DVDs

Hi, and welcome to the TSG forum
could be a n umber of things - the DVD h/w - driver, video h/w - driver, sound h/w, - driver, memory

lets start by finding out what the blue screen says - then post the result - looking for stopcode and any filenames

goto
control panel>
system>
advanced tab>
startup and recovery - settings>
under the title - system failure
untick - automatically restart

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320299

now when it crashes - it willnot restart and the blue screen should stay on the screen
post the info on the screen
it will give the errorcodes and a filename, if caused by a driver.

in the meantime
you may want to try running a memeory test

A:Playing DVDs on HP Compaq DC5850 Microtower PC

You may have made the wrong choice of DVD. Frozen is a Disney title and their films are well known for copyright protection. Unless it's a legit copy you've no chance. Try another non Disney DVD and see if it plays. Assuming Frozen is a genuine Disney DVD read on.

I have Windows 8.1 but it's on a netbook so I can't replicate your situation. Instead, I stuck Brave, also by Disney, into the DVD drive on my Windows 7 laptop and opened it in My Computer to show all the files as per your screenshots for Frozen. The film doesn't like this and I couldn't get it to play by clicking on the files. However, I opened VLC Player first then clicked on Media (top left) Open Disc and then Play. It took a while to kick in but the screen opened for options like the language and then it played fine.

FROM WITHIN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER THERE IS A LINK THAT TAKES ME TO PLUGGINS THAT WILL DO THIS, BUT THOSE PLUGGINS ALL STATE THAT THEY ARE FOR WIN XP. WILL THOSE SAME PLUGGINS WORK IN ME, OR ARE THERE OTHERS THAT I SHOULD DOWNLOAD?
THANKS

A:Playing Dvds With Windows Media Player 9

We don't help with with illegal stuff here, and DVD ripping is sort of a gray-area. I understand that you own a legal copy of the DVD, but ripping it is still illegal because it uses DeCSS to crack the encryption. So im not sure if I should be helping you here.

That aside, those plugins won't work for you, however PowerDVD will play VOB files for you.

Hi.

I have recently purchased an Advent Milano mini notebook complete with Windows 7 Starter Edition. (ADVENT Milano Netbook - Cheap ADVENT Netbooks. Buy the ADVENT Milano Netbook at PC World.)

I'm using a LG optical drive with it, which installed Cyberlink Power DVD 9 when installing the drivers. (PC World - LG Portable slimline Re-Writer DVD REWRITER DRIVE - Shop for cheap DVDRWs)

However it appears to be the bogstandard edition, and won't play Dolby Digital sound when I pop in a DVD.
Same problem with WMP. Is there a way of overcoming this?

Recently I have started having problems playing DVDs in Windows Media Player 11.

Discs that previously played without any problem now do not play smoothly at all and seem to "stutter".

CDs appear to play OK - although, having said that, I am not sure they are playing as smoothly as they used to. It could be my imagination but I am sure there is a discernible change on live CD recordings where one track runs into another.

I have completely uninstalled and re-installed WMP 11 and the problem remains the same.

Anything played via Media Center is problem free.

I only purchased my laptop in November 2006 and am a bit of a novice so this might be something really simple but I would be extremely grateful for any advice.

Thank you.

Every time I try to play any DVD in Windows Media Center, I get this error:

"CANNOT PLAY DVD
The DVD may be in use by another application. If all other applications are closed, the video resolution may need to be lowered or the display connection type may not support playback of the DVD."

I know the issue is not with my physical DVD drive because of the following reasons:
I am presently dual-booting XP Pro SP3 and Windows 8 Pro with Media Center. The former can play DVDs just fine.VLC Player on Windows 8 can also play DVDs just fine.

I'm curious if there's any way to get this to work on Windows Media Center on Windows 8, then, because I paid for the upgrade from Pro to Pro with Media Center, after all.

A:Windows Media Center not playing any DVDs?

If the DVD is copy protected, and your monitor is not HDCP enabled, then that could be the problem. You wouldn't see this on XP because XP doesn't have HDCP requirements.

Hello,

I'm having a problem. It seems that Windows freezes entirely (so you can't even move the mouse cursor) a few seconds after I stop playback of DVDs or DVD .VOB files. I've tried with both K-Lite Codec Pack and ffdshow and the same thing happens on both. It happens on both VLC and Media Player Classic. The problem does not occur with any other type of video files.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

The software isn't corrupted since they can run other DVDs. I have updated my drivers. My DVDs work in Windows 7, so what is my problem?
