I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I first made my custom pc strictly made for gaming I was able to run such games like arma 3 in ultra with 60+ fps (which is fricken amazing)
But now can only get it just above 30 on standard. I think this is because of my computer having many programs which maybe just stopping cpu/gpu usage when I play games. or the programs may even be viruses slowing the performance. so I really want to completely wipe my pc hoping that I can get my pc close to what is was when I brought it. nothing is externally broke when I looked at the things in my pc. so what I am trying to get at is what do I have to do to get my pc back to what is was? what program do I need to use? what do I have to do? please reply asap as I would like to be able to have it cleaned up before new year. your help will always mean a lot

My Kraken is picking up everything I say, before anyone says about unchecking ''listen to device'', it's not checked, the weird thing is, when I disable the mic from the sound options, it stills picks up everything, it's like the headphones and microphone are connected.

Hey everyone, Really loving this site so far, so much useful info for a nerd like me! ANYWAYS... Ok so I purchased the orig i7 2.7ghz when it came out like 3-4 years ago? and also the MSI x58 pro Mobo.. I cant seem to find if it's worth upgrading my gpu and my mobo. Im not sure if these are out of date or not, I see the x58 for sale for around $150 and my processor around $200.. I was wondering with the new technology in these new intel CPU's like the Ivy bridge and sandy ect.. Is it worth selling my i7 and picking up a new i5 or heck even a new i7... Also same for the mobo.

Thanks for looking and any help would be appreciated.

Note* Games run great, I just love upgrading

A:Original i7 versus new i5

It sounds like you have an i7 920?
Unless you're frequently using CPU intensive applications I don't think it's worth upgrading. Overclock it to 3.6-4.0Ghz and it will run all current games fine.

Just do what a lot of 920 owners are doing (including me): wait for Haswell next year.

I have an Xbox (not 360) and an old computer and am in need of ideas and preferably a guide of something that i can build out of the old parts. The computer has a monitor and keyboard and the xbox has one controller. My major problem is I do NOT have a soldering iron so many project ideas are not possible for me. I would also like to keep this project low budget.

I'm sure you've already ran across that though.

Whats wrong with just soft modding it and getting emulators for older console systems and playing old ROMs?

Hello,

I am currently trying to fix an Acer laptop for a friend of mine and from what I can tell it looks as if her laptop continues to reset itself back to its original settings. For example, the desktop background goes back to the slandered picture, desktop icons that were once there are gone and programs have to be reinstalled. Neither of us have an exact cause for this issue, except she did mention how she had a router problem within the last week, but I wouldn't see how that would constantly be affecting the laptop itself when the router has been fixed. Every day the computer resets itself and its becoming a frustrating task for her and she's just about given up on it.

Is there, perhaps, a control I could change? Could it be a possible virus or malware issue?

Please help, I'm becoming a little desperate for help myself.

Thank you,
Ashley

Hi, can someone give me some advice? I have an LG Flatron L1910BA monitor a few years old. worked perfectly fine. connected it to my ancient Toshiba Satellite and enjoyed the big screen display. worked fine. then when i reconnect it back to the original CPU (Korean TG Dreamsys) the display is completey horrid. all the text is absolutley tiny (maybe 2 point font - or less!), the icons are distorted in size but semi-coherent. What can I do? when i go into windows xp safe mode the display is the same. i have the original monitor drivers but i can't read the control panel as the windows that pop up are about 1" x 1" in size. It's really insane. and I don't know what to do or even where to begin. Thanks for any help that you give!

Hello and welcome to Techspot!

We need to back up a bit first. Open up your case and have a look.

When the system is not turned on, there is an LED light on your board. Can you see it? What color is it? When you hit the power button, tell us EXACTLY what happens. Any fans spinning? Does the color of that light change? Any beeps from the system?

Did you connect the power connector to your graphics card?

How many watts is your PSU (and what make is it)?

Tell us some more about your ram. What size and speed are the ram? How many sticks?

I have a stock cooler currently on my cpu, its too loud and i want to replace it. Its just most coolers involve replacing the backplate on the motherboard which i dont really want to do. So if anyone knows of an easy to fit cooler for a K8 motherboard that would be appriciated.

Alex

A:would anyone reccomend a good Amd64 cooler that fits onto the original socket?

in your case, zalman coolers are out of the question. you can find thermaltake models that fit into your socket without the need to take the board out. (www.thermaltake.com) you should be aware that higher performance hsf assemblies (made from copper i might add) weigh more and therefore most of them require a backplate, so if you wanted one without a backplate your cooling performance isn't going to get much better.

card.

The 6600gt is an excellent card for a person that wants great performance without extrordinary costs. Be sure you get a compatible card(an agp card if your motherboard has an agp slot, pci express card for pci express motherboard.)

I don't think xfx is the best brand, but I doubt they are the worst. I think bfg, asus, msi, gigabyte, etc make good cards.

I don't know how many dollars L150 is, but I'm guessing like 200+? If that's right, then the 6600gt is about the best I know of. It's what I have, good card.

I had to replace the hard drive in my Pavilion when the original failed. I reinstalled the original software from the Recovery CD set I purchased from HP. The system now identifies my processor as an Athlon running at 750 MHz instead of the original Athlon 1.3 GHz. This 750 MHz figure is the same in the BIOS setup screen and in Windows XP My Computer Properties screen. I have not changed any components other than the hard drive, and the processor is the original Athlon 1.3 GHz. What would account for the decrease in speed and what can I do about it?

I have an older Toshiba laptop. 2gigs of Ram. I am running XP. I have done multiple virus scans with 2 different anti-virus programs and I am clean. I can't figure out what the issue is.

Also I keep getting a "sample.exe" will not terminate when powering off.

I've read this link here on TS and wonder if it is applicable: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic127234.html

A:Wallpaper keeps disappearing

Assuming you want to have a screensaver, right-click on the desktop, choose 'properties', 'screensavers', and select one of your choice, but not (none). Also there are some problems with pictures you choose to have as desktop wallpaper. Go into Display, and select one of the standard windows wallpapers, ok it, and reboot the pc. See if that fixes the 'sample' problem.

Hi Everyone,

I am using a dell widescreen monitor and its default resolution is 1920 by 1080

Usually when I look for wallpapers I get resolution of 1920 by 1200. I rarely find any which is 1920 by 1080. So what can do to get the best possible output?

I use windows xp and setting options like center, tile or stretch does make the image a little diff.

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks,

JG

A:Wallpaper & resolution

If you have a program that can resize I'd get the better quality image and scale it down. You definately dont want a smaller resolution picture and have to stretch it out to screen size. In which xp and vista give you the option anyway.

Hi guys/girls

Users Laptop will not update through Windows XP. Group Policy is updating everything else okay, however the Windows Desktop Wallpaper is not updating, giving her the old wallpaper. Even running gpupdate /force doesn't update her wallpaper.
just to complicate matters, she is a remote worker, and logs in via VPN. When the VPN has logged in successfully, Kixtart script runs and downloads updates, this works for all users except her Laptop, I have been informed that the only way to fix this is to rebuild the machine from scratch, but I feel this is a bit drastic.

You can do this whenever you want. Your monitor screen size may may a difference as to how the picture displays.

You should really include your system specs in your profile - more specifically what type of video card you are using in your machine. It will make it easier to help you with this since some sets of drivers handle dual monitor setups differently.

Is there any way by which i can use screensavers as wallpapers on desktop i.e. not a stationary photo on desktop but a moving screensaver on the desktop with all the icons and shortcuts on it ???

A:Screensaver as wallpaper

Yes you can, do a Google search. i dont know of anything where you can make your own. But the software probably exsists somewhere. But there are many animated wallpapers you can download where all your icons on the desktop are still present. Keep in mind that downloading these, the program(s) are full of ad-ware, spyware at the such!

hello, i,m here for teh first timesearching for a solution.I have a lap top with Windows XP Media Center...I got a banner from awesomehomepage , now this banner appears on my desktop every time i connect. On the other hand I cannot get any wallpaper,I went into "properties" and it is all in grey colour and cannot activete any. I also tried to make show a photo but is also not working.
I guess they are 2 problems related or not...anyway the wallpaper problem was first, the banner just came in later.I passed the antivirus and I also scaned with other antivirus, they find nothing

A:Desktop with banner and no wallpaper

Had a friend with the same problem...I think it might be Browser Hijacking caused by malicious code that can alter your browser settings without your knowledge. Browser Hijackers are extremely common. You can give this a try...I won't guaranty it'll work...but its sure as hell worth a try

I was given a PC, XP Professional, pre-Service Pack 1, but on a company licence. So I needed my own version with pukka licence key. Following some software installs, Avast and Svc pack 2, now if I load, blue XP desktop, no applications running. I don't have any original disks to correct the 1st version. I've purchased an XP Home (Ver 2002) disk and want to install this (better all round) , but this will only run from a 'new PC' scenario. How do I clean the PC down please, so I can install from the new CD? There aren't any files/applications to save. I've been lent a Knoppix CD, to get onto the Internet.

Thanks in anticipation

A:Remove, reinstall XP without original disks

Simply insert the new XP disk, and, providing the bios is set to boot from cd, it will give you this option when you turn the computer on, then when XP setup loads, it will ask you to install windows or repair a current version, select fresh install, then it will ask you partition to use, select the main partition.

Then it will ask you if you want to format or leave the partition intact.

Select format partition with ntfs (quick)

And your away - this will do a fast format deleting everything on the drive and XP will install no problems.

Please be certain though that there is not data you need to save before following these steps!!!

...instead of background colour.

This is a very simple request, somewhat annoying because I KNOW it's simple, but I can't for the life of me remember where to go to change it!!

Basically I just want to know how to see the desktop background wallpaper under an Icon name rather than the colour the desktop background (behind the picture)is set to.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Oh yeah my OS is Win XP Home SP2.

Thanks,

Peter.

PS. I feel really stupid right now.

A:Showing background wallpaper under desktop icon text...

There's two settings that can cause it.

1. Right click the desktop and choose 'arrange icons by' and make sure that 'lock web items on desktop' is unchecked.

2. Open the Control Panel and select System. On the Advanced tab click the settings button under Performance. The box for 'use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop' should be checked.

A:Need help getting the original windows MBR back

I have the recovery console on the boot menu, and it's never asked me for a boot disk. - of course, thinking about it logically for a moment, that wouldn't help you anyway.

It sounds like you have the option of borrowing somebodies XP disk, or waiting here where no doubt someone will have an idea. I'm going to see if I can find something.

Ok - to start with, try using an XP NTLDR boot disk (readme1st) download from http://1gighost.net/jerseyboy/xpquick.zip and unzip to an XP formatted floppy disk. Boot the computer from this, and provided your windows partion is C: you should be able to get into your windows at the very least.

edit - I'm just downloading something which claims to be a bootable recovery console CD. I'm checking to see if it works atm - if it does I'll post the link.

edit 2 You could try downloading this zipped ISO, unzip it and use the ISO to create a win xp setup disk. Try the recovery console on that, and see if fixboot and fixmbr works... http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/tools/bootdiscs/xp_rec_con.zip

You will probably have to login to the account that has "User/Administrator" underneath it. In the Control Panel go to "User Accounts" click on "Change an Account" then pick the account you want to change then click on "change my account" and look to see what the settings are for that account. You should be able to turn off that function and/or many others to any account that is not the "User/Administrator".

Hi y?all,
Lately i have been dealing with a lot of under performance of my notebook. The cause of that is of all the ads which are constantly popping up while browsing.
Therefore, I have been searching the web for tips and tricks/solutions to get a rid of these pop ups, however with no success.
So now I found this new forum page, and my question is: How can I get a rid of these pop ups and boost up my notebook (i7 processor) performance. Should I reset my laptop and restore to factory settings?
Thanks

Same situation when I try to repair directly from the original CD (not a copy!!).
The decision to repair came about because I cannot install Service Pack 3 for Office 2007; I get a message regarding an installation database that is possibly damaged.

Hi all I hope someone can help me restore usability to my XP SP installation on my Dell refurb I've lost my original user and program settings after a repair installation It all started when the user told me they had an event using Firefox that necessitated rebooting their computer Upon restarting they got a black pre-Windows screen indicating that the SYSTEM file was not going to work I wished I copied the wording I didn't I tried booting off original repair XP didn't preserve my user/settings...HELP! Windows a Windows XP SP slipstream disc that I use for these occasions went to the repair installation option not the Recovery Console initially but the XP system could not be found just the partition Next I went into Recovery Console to see what registry hive files were in the CONFIG folder All five were there - SOFTWARE SYSTEM DEFAULT SAM and SECURITY - plus one called SYSTEM SAV with smaller size and much older file date I tried backing up these five files to a TMP directory but the SYSTEM file could not be copied I renamed SYSTEM as SYSTEM bak and SYSTEM SAV as SYSTEM but that didn't help reboot or recognize as a working system as again I tried doing a repair install Windows XP repair didn't preserve my original user/settings...HELP! from CD Next I found similarly named files in the REPAIR folder except the SYSTEM file was not there just one called SYSTEM BAK I copied all five of those files to the CONFIG folder having backed up the original five files minus SYSTEM which wouldn't copy I renamed SYSTEM BAK from the REPAIR folder as SYSTEM once it was moved to the CONFIG folder When I booted this time I got a blue screen of death after the Windows splash screen After this I booted using F to get the options at the bottom of that screen it said that lt Windows root gt system ntoskrnl exe was missing or corrupt I booted to recovery console and ntoskrnl exe seemed to be there but didn't try to reinstall it from disc - perhaps I should have The last thing I tried leading to this problem is that I booted off CD and went through the repair installation of the now listed Windows XP Professional system I chose R and let it do its thing It prompted me once about regional settings It seemed to progress maybe a little quicker than usual However after the whole process was over it was booting Windows as if for the first time asking me for user IDs and giving me the chance to learn more about XP Now Windows XP starts but when I look at Users in control panel I just have Admin and Guest - my original user account is not there However the programs that were installed are still listed they don't work quite right yet either prompting me for licenses or other issues such as Net Framework which I can describe later Also the C drive still contains the folders associated with the original user that I'm trying to restore which I backed up again to make sure The Outlook data files are there too Can anyone guess or suggest what my next step should be if I hope to restore functionality to this system sooner rather than later or never I'm about to go through Windows updates of which there are many pending I've thought about hunting for other registry hive files to restore or in a different combination By the way the Windows Restore doesn't show any previous restore points

A:Windows XP repair didn't preserve my original user/settings...HELP!

The registry hives in the Repair folder are placed there during the initial XP install. If you used those hives then no program installed after the XP install would work.

Do you still have the initial registry hives in config you backed up? Put those back in config. If not then you would need to reinstall all programs.

Look in the hidden folder System Volume Information. Is there a folder named restore with a long suffix. Double click it. Do you see any folders with a RPXX name where XX is a number?

Unless I'm missing something, this is a touch screen which you use your finger to navigate rather than a mouse.  If you are more comfortable using a mouse you can use a usb type with the laptop.  I personally don't know anyone who uses a stylus on a laptop touch screen.

Hi:

My sister recently purchased one of those all-in-one computers by Dell(thought it was HP) and it came preinstalled with Windows 8.

She used to have windows XP, which is what I still have and we both had this FREE little piece of software installed called powertoys wallpaper changer.  In my opinion it is a really cool piece of software that allows one to change your desktop background picture from anywhere to 15 minutes to 2 weeks as well allowing one to only view certain images on special days(Christmas etc.).  Unforunately, powertoys wallpaper changer doesn't work on Windows 8 because I installed it and it did nothing and I am totally disgusted about this development.

Yes, I know about the background thiga-ma-bob that Windows 8 has but that isn't the same.  I don't want a slide show I want something will allow me the same capabilities that the powertoys wallpaper changer did.

Any help would be appreciated.

Forgive my noobish grasp of this. I need to backup my system. I don't care about the data files (i already back these up to an external drive), only the installed software. The software on this is worth more than the laptop holding it.
My dilemma is that I don't have any original software disc for the OS. Ultimately, I just want to backup the installed environment as is, so if this computer breaks, I can get a new one and load the working OS and Adobe software from a backup drive without jumping through registration hoops.
So which is more appropriate for me, imaging or cloning?
Appreciate the feedback from anyone who knows.

A:Cloning or Imaging? - No Original Disc, Need to Save Software

You could clone the hard drive to an new one... that way you can just cold swap them if anything goes wrong.

You can always create a system image also, but this won't necessarily save you if you don't have a running OS. (though you can use a repair disk)

I'd say clone, but of course there is the cost involved of buying a new HDD. The money is not lost though and you can store your spare HDD in a cool dry place for use at any time... for this machine or others.

You can disable it at startup but I would not recommend doing that. You can edit the registry offline using Kaspersky Resue Disk which has a nice Registry editor.

My sister in law gave me the Vista emachine and the first thing I did was to go in and mess with everything She wanted all her stuff off - personal and financial - So I deleted uninstalled etc but I am not yet the lone administrator and some remnants of the old backup program and pieces of stuff still Vista from lost original owner CD Possible replace for to msoft? there I know the system password It is kind of a mess but it runs pretty good but with some small aggravations - upon start-up several little signs come up about missing dll files There is no chance that she will come up with the CD but she may have the receipt for it I would like to clean the Vista back-up thats in it since Norton is doing that I really wanted a clean reboot where I could get in and fix it Also I bought a program to check repair and replace drivers I guess we don't use brand names and now I don't have a sound card working Thanks and I'm new here tell me if this is too long

A:Possible for original owner to replace lost Vista CD from msoft?

Also I bought a program to check, repair, and replace  drivers. < You can name the program if it is legal.
There are many Free programs that may also do this ......

I do not know of any such program, except for the original CD / DVD -

Every now and then, probably every 3 months or so, my desktop wallpaper will change into a flat bright lime green instead of my personal wallpaper on startup, within about a minute or so, my normal wallpaper will load and everything is fine though.

But just today I unlocked my computer out of sleep mode and it was stuck at the flat bright lime green background. A restart simply fixed it. This was the first time I was stuck with the bright lime green background so I finally got some motivation to quit ignoring it since it would usually fix itself before and look into it, anyone know about this problem and a solution?

Google isn't much help and I'm sure I will have better luck here like I usually do. Thanks in advance.EDIT: After another restart, the green background becomes stuck again on startup. I have to set my wallpaper to fix it.

Hi All

Not so long ago i had an unfortunate mishap which resulted in me losing a file etc
from my WMP and now it can not run correctly ie missing files.
After advice from you guys to download and use VLC Player, which i did and I am
extremely happy with, I am doing some housekeeping and cleanups on my XP Pro
system.
I do not want to remove WMP or know whether i can safely, so i would like to know
if i can re-install WMP using my installation disc, maybe as a repair option. If I am
to have stuff on my pc it would be nice if it all worked ok.

Thanks in advance

Keep up the good site BC and regards to all.

Depends on what your system is...and just what type of "install disk" you have.

How can I modify or get rid of a picture that appeared on my computer as wallpaper? I was downloading some xrated pictures from a Website and as I copied and pasted one of them to my desktop, intending to move it later to the appropriate folder, it automatically set itself up as the wallpaper. Now I personally love it. But my girlfriend would probably not.

I know I can probably select a different picture from the wallpaper list. But it would be still on the list. She might run across it there.and I'd be still in trouble with her.Actually some of my other pictures from my pictures folder are also on that list. and how and why they got there I have no clue. Any ideas? Thanks.

A:Getting rid of wallpaper

You can try doing a search for file extensions such as .jpg or .bmp and deleting the images you recognize as the ones you want to remove.

You may have another problem which is some type of malware. Have you scanned for malware and if so what programs did you use?

A:Deleting original user account

Can you distinguish between the two accounts when they are opened?

If you can go to Control Panel and open Administrative Tools. Double-click the Local Security Policy.

When the Local Security Settings appears, open the Local Policies\Security Options branch and double-click the Accounts: Rename Administrator Account policy.

When the Accounts: Rename Administrator Account Properties dialog box appears, type a new name in the text box, and click OK.

You will want to rename the account you want to delete, this will allow you to be sure this is the account you want to delete.

I need to try and boot a copy of windows that has been recovered from a formatted hard drive. I can?t restore the original boot sector, or clone the original partition. I have managed to get a copy of all the partitions? files and folders, including what I think are all of the boot critical system files (e.g msdos.sys, io.sys, ntldr.sys etc). This is to boot Windows XP.

Is there a way that a blank hard disk can have a bootable partition created, the restored data copied to it, and then somehow configure the drive to boot windows from the files? I know there is a lot more to it than that, with boot sector / boot loader files / config that is normally written during the OS install ? but I can?t restore this data and need to boot the windows installation that was originally on the hard drive before it was formatted.

Any help appreciated.

I have a laptop running xp professional with 2 gig of ram. hen I attempt to boot it, it loads up to the wallpaper then stops ..no icons, can't get to task manager or anything else. About 10 minutes later, it finally loads and everything seems fine from that point on. Before I decided to wait to see if it would eventually load, I tried a hard reboot and the same thing would happen. I've run antivirus, spybot, and tds killer. Nothing was found on any of these. Doesn't need defragging, no hard drive errors so i am at a loss. I have seen a lot of "can't boot" but haven't seen anything where it eventually boots on up. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Two questions This first one is a question about what two registry keys do HKEY LOCAL MACHINE gt SYSTEM gt CurrentControlSet gt services gt Tcpip gt Parameters gt DNSRegisteredAdapters gt Corresponding NIC What are the Flags and RegisteredSinceBoot keys keys do do change DNSRegisteredAdapters' what once Also, these to values. original back changed, will keys What do they do I attempt to change the values of these keys They go back to their original values if I restart log in or run ipconfig registerdns nbsp Here is some background I am on an IT engineering and I have been looking into a DNS issue we have had for quite some time The issue is that our AD DNS server records do not update for DNSRegisteredAdapters' keys once changed, will change back to original values. Also, what do these keys do about half of our machines We have timestamps dating back a couple of months I know I know scavenge The team in charge of that is in the process of getting that set I have been looking into a multitude of things to ensure all computers' DNS records update nbsp In my testing I have checked several machines and notice that those keys mentioned above have the values of- flags and registeredsinceboot On the computers that aren't updating their values are I have attempted to change to and on a computer that isn't updating but the values always revert back to nbsp Perhaps the issue we are seeing isn't related at all to the keys presented but if you can help me identify the purpose of these keys and how to save the values if changed that would be greatly appreciated At least for testing purpose nbsp Some more info if you'd like Since these are the AD DNS servers only computers on the domain connect to them yes the security settings specify this I have taken machines that aren't updating off the domain and re-added them Their records did not change I took off machines that are updating and their DNS records was removed almost immediately I re-added them and their record was updated in the DNS servers almost immediately Also there were some machines whose DNS records hadn't updated in months but as soon as I ran ipconfig renew and ipconfig registerdns they updated Others didn't update with this nbsp

only had a handful of BSOD's due to video card drivers and that's it.

Win 8.1 Pro
Intel MB graphics
2 DVI monitors
On only one of my Win 8.1 systems does this occur. I leave them all day. It is part of a domain. Screen goes into "turn off" mode after 2 hours. After midnight I lose the wallpaper (single image) and the screen is black. Icons are visible
and when I hover over them, they appear. The day/time in the system tray is stalled at the time of "blanking". This just started happening. I apply MS patches regularly. I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot and the wallpaper comes back.
The other Win 8.1 Intel system also uses intel graphics and it does not have this problem.

Any thoughts?

Hello and welcome deckard

I guess you know how to change logon screen : Log On Screen - Change

Now, open the logon wallpaper with an image manipulation program like Photoshop, Paint.net or GIMP, change the color as you want and apply it ?

Not quite the thing you are wanting, but the output will work.

I've got a problem I'd an doesn't new one SSD; original works, but Cloned like to solve I don't have to solve it for reasons that are clear below but I'd really like to know what happened Call it an exercise for exercise's sake I've searched the forum but can't find any threads on this issue Recently I cloned my existing SSD to a new SSD to give the Windows free upgrade a try without risking my original configuration I'm running W Pro -bit SP and I cloned the drive Cloned an SSD; new one works, but original doesn't with the Acronis software that came with the new SSD The new SSD booted up to W without a hitch Cloned an SSD; new one works, but original doesn't The upgrade to W didn't work I tried times but the SSD was returned to W without alteration so the only thing I lost was time But here's the thing the original SSD will no longer boot up There's no message about a missing system disk just a black screen with a blinking cursor at top left And when I look in the BIOS with Cloned an SSD; new one works, but original doesn't that SSD connected the Windows Boot Manager that used to appear in the boot options is missing Some searching and testing revealed that the BOOTMGR was installed on my D drive but the D drive had been connected and running all along Moreover when I re-connected the new SSD it worked as it should It would appear that BOOTMGR location has something to do with the original SSD not booting but I can't see how unless the cloning software altered the original SSD and that doesn't make sense I tried using the Repair function from the W installation disk but it gave me a message about the version being wrong which I'm guessing occurred because my PC has SP I have a Rescue Disk I made with Windows but it won't boot I expect I'm missing a step there For what it's worth the original SSD is a Crucial M gb which is a little over three years old but has not given me a second's trouble until now The new SSD is a Crucial MX gb Once again the new SSD works so I don't have to solve this puzzle but I want to Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated BTW I expect that the BOOTMGR location was the reason the Windows upgrade didn't work I had no idea that Windows installation would load it on a second drive when present and I'll be darned if I know why but that seems to be common I've since fixed it with EasyBCD thanks to a post on this forum

A:Can't add folders for desktop wallpaper

I have almost exactly the same problem as above. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

I cannot add a new location to the Personalization > Desktop Background wallpapers dropdown.

I even tried to go into regedit and delete the old location strings in KnownFolders, then manually add the new locations under the KnownFolders area as new strings, but that did not work.

The Desktop Wallpapers still shows the old default location library and continues to display folders of wallpapers that are no longer in existence.

No number of restarts, or even logging on as a new user, will solve the issue. What am I missing here??

There must be some other registry area that holds these locations? Did the guy above ever solve his issue?

Hi guys I'm not all that computer literate but I have Windows Professional -bit on my laptop and its hooked up to my quot Full HD TV used as my computer's monitor I have downloaded and am trying to use this moving gif image http upload wikimedia org wikipedi e by nevit gif as my desktop background wallpaper I've Googled and Youtubed the subject as many seem to say that Microsoft doesn't allow you to use animated gif desktop backgrounds in Windows but they say there are ways around it They pretty much all say to use a program called DreamScene but that didn't work for me at all I tried several times I eventually found a trial version of a program called BioniX Desktop Wallpaper Animator that ran as an add-on program in as desktop b.g./wallpaper my do animated I moving How a set image .gif the quot Tools quot menu inside another program called Bionix Wallpaper Changer This worked perfectly I stretched the gif to fill my screen You could even set the speed of the gif frames to make it seem exactly like the How do I set a moving animated .gif image as my desktop b.g./wallpaper speed of real flames rising the default speed was slightly too fast BUT I just turned my computer back on this morning and tried to run BioniX Desktop Wallpaper Animator as I do every startup to start the gif running as my desktop background and it wouldn't let me A small window popped up whenever I tried to select the fire gif to use saying quot Please Update quot I opened the main BioniX Wallpaper Changer program which still works I might add you can still use a playlist of normal jpg's as a slideshow fade-transition type background and clicked the quot Check for Updates quot button but it said I already have the latest version The Bionix Desktop Animator tool program within it does not have a quot Check for Updates quot button So I can only assume that because both are only free trials that quot Please Update quot actually means quot Please pay for the full version quot I can't do that I don't have a credit card But anyway I also tried un-installing the program and re-installing it This didn't work either I was wondering if anyone knows of any other alternatives to BioniX that will allow me to permanently use this moving gif as my desktop background wallpaper and select change the play speed frame-rate of the gif The search for an alternate program is doing my head in Thanks again

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Please use the link above my signature to Fill in your system spec's page,
Using a gif will not be possible but you can convert the gif to a wmv file to use it instead,
how to play gif images in wall paper in windows 7
But this is resource hog,
Cheers.

Here's a 1600-900 version of the gif which might be more appropriately sized for a desktop background,
The file is 11.3mg so this is where the resources get eaten up

I wanted to use the background slideshowing and it stopped working on my Windows. It's somehow funny, after restart Windows switches the background exactly 1 time. After this first time it doesn't work until I do another restart. I've tried several things to get it working, not loading all applications, using the built-in themes, removing graphics card drivers and much more. But this is obviously a bug in Windows itself. (on 2 other PCs with Windows 7 RC it works like a charm). Any ideas? .

A:Desktop Wallpaper Slide-Show stopped working

Resolved the issue (at least for me).
This had to do with the Power schemes. Do this

Type edit power plan in the Start Search box, and then click Edit power plan.
Click Change advanced power settings.
Select Available in Desktop background settings->Slide show.
That's it you should see the background changing.

Hopefully that helps.

I cannot create a new folder on the desktop. Right click of the mouse pad does nothing. Shift Control N does nothing. This is ridiculous. Any help is appreciated.

Does right click work at all? Try right click on Start button and see if it produces a menu. Some people has experienced problems with their touch pad, try using a mouse and see if right click works.

Hi guys,

i bought a tower that had windows 8 on it originally
i installed 7 pro to keep everything uniform...for the users mostly

i bought a win 7 pro license but when i went to activate it says windows is activated
with the ask for genuine microsoft software logo software on the right

there is no option to change the key...
i dont remember activating during install and assumed i would get the 3 days before the nag screen
i used a dell windows 7 pro 64 bit install disk...how is this possible?

any ideas?
i suppose i can change the key via other means...but is it necessary as i could use the license on another box...

what would you do?

A:Does windows 7 auto activate if windows 8 original?

There's your problem, you used a Dell disc. Dell, and some other OEM's, embed the keys into the installation disc. You shouldn't use a Dell disc except on the Dell computers its designed for. Change the key and do a proper activation to keep your client legal.

This isn't (now) a real issue, but am curious as to what happened. Before the 10 upgrade mess, my account was a Microsoft Live account. When I upgraded to 10, I did something and had to logout. When I tried to log back in, my account used my hotmail account. That's when I had to use the Macrium backup for 8.1 because I didn't have the password for my hotmail account. BTW, it didn't change my PIN number. Go figure.

I noticed recently that when surfing web from yahoo homepage that when I return to homepage that its not in the same position as when I left it.
I have to scroll up or down to find where I left off.
This started several days ago.
This is not a major issue. I was just wondering if there may be a quick fix for this?
I am up to date with Windows, Adobe and Java and have Windows 8.1 and ie 11 browser.

I have an Alienware 17 computer that I recently reinstalled Windows 8 on because of a hard drive failure.

However, I can't find the wallpaper that I always used. I'm pretty sure it came with the computer because I don't look for wallpapers online.

All I have is the screenshot I took to remember where my icons were.
Does anyone know where this wallpaper came from?

A:What is this wallpaper?

I use a Microsoft account.
After reinstalling my OS my wallpaper appeared automatically.

Do you use a Microsoft account ?
