Wiping free space - overwritting [how many passes?]

Q: Wiping free space - overwritting [how many passes?]

1 pass/3 passes/7 passes/35 passesI don't care about the time. I just want to know is it good to overwrite sth so many times. I don't want to do damage to my computer while thinking everything I do is good and 'so secure'.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Wiping free space - overwritting [how many passes?]

The Department of Defense had somewhere in a manual years ago that said something like 3-7 passes. It's been debunked. One pass is all that's needed. SSD have something similar, but it just tells all the blocks to go to a zero electron state. However, this will use up one life cycle of the entire ssd drive. I guess that's the price to have a clear conscience.

I recently cloned my old 160gb hdd on to a new 1tb hdd, then proceeded to format my old hdd. After formating it had lost 128gb only showing 32gb. I have checked for partitions (unallocated) but none can be found. Even tried remapping mbr, with no result. Any help to recover my lost storage space would be great.

Hi I have a 450GB hard drive and had only used up less than half of it.. or so I thought. Yesterday for some reason my disk space had been reduced to 38GB remaining. I ran WinDirStat and it told me my hard drive had 191 GB used space (which means I should have plenty of extra space) but when I right click the drive and look at properties it tells me that I have 416 GB used space! Help what is going on here?

A:Where is my disk space?

Download MiniTool Partition Wizard and check the drive that way. You may have a section of the hard drive not currently associated with a drive letter or you may have a defective hard drive. It's a free program and it will show you right on the screen every part of your hard drive (even if it is not showing elsewhere in other programs).
Also, you should probably run Disk Cleanup from within Windows. That will clear out old temp files.

As you can see from the screenshot, somehow I have acquired a partition of unallocated space of approx 195 GB...I want to delete this partition, adding the extra GB to my main, OS:C partition, but I cannot figure out how to do it...Can someone help? Thanks a lot,

Steve in Kansas

A:Deleting Unallocated Space Partition

It is already deleted, that is why you can't.

What you can do is grow your C partition into that space (forget whether it is called merge or grow or expand).

After updating the Windows XP to Windows 7, my computer becomes really slow and recently often receives a low disk space message. And there is only 3GB of free space left on my system partition. So, I think it is the time to extend my system partition space. But, I am not so familiar about the partition expanding things and don?t know what to do. Do you have any idea for me? Please, give me some suggestions! Thanks!

Hello all,

I've recently bought a HP Pavilion 15-n252sq laptop, with Free Dos - unfortunately I can't install Windows 7 over it, due to the following error I keep receiveing in the Installation screen:

"Select the driver to be installed" - and regardless of the paths I have and the available folders, I can not seem to proceed wtih the W7 installation.

Please notice that, I've tried to use both a W7 DVD and also a bootable USB drive (and yes, connected in the USB 2.0 port and not USB 3.0 ) - but I always get to the same point where I have to select drivers.

Please also notice that the BIOS doesn't allow me to make any modifications except for some minor ones (like select boot priority, or enable USB 3.0), as the rest of the MAIN features are greyed out .

Can anyone please help me with this issue?

You may have to use a program Like KillDisk to reformat the drive. Then try installing your Win 7 DVD.

I have two magnets I removed from a harddrive & am wondering if I move them over the discs, will that wipe the discs clean?

A:Wiping a harddrive clean

Most-likely yes. Magnets are highly destructive to hard drives, and if you pass them over the disks (in an opened case) you will most likely fry any data on it.

I have an external hard disk of Samsung 650GB which got damaged when I was transferring some files to my pc through it. Now when I connect to any PC or Laptop it shows the safely remove icon but there is no letter assigned to it and also doesn't show up in My Computer though it can be seen in Disk Management.

I tried Mini Tool Partition Wizard but when I create a new partition it stops at 90%. I tried wiping out the partition but to no avail.

Is there any solution for it??? Please help.

A:Creating A New Partition Or Wiping A Partition On External Hard Disk Stuck

I would check the manufacturers site for a windows utility to low level format it. If you cannot find a utility to do that on manufacturer's site, then try this: to wipe the drive. WARNING!! this will destroy all data on the selected hard drive!! be very careful when selecting a drive to wipe that you don't inadvertently select the wrong disk. After a low level format, unplug the drive, plug back in, windows should detect as a new, virgin, drive and it'll prompt you to format it. Format it and hopefully everything will be fine from here on out for you.

Post back, Hope this helps!!

A:How much space needed on SSD for Win7 64-bit

Personally, I wouldn't use anything smaller then a 64GB SSD. A 32GB SSD will be good for a cache drive but not a boot drive. I think the 128GB & 256GB drives work best. They give you a lot of room for OS + Core Programs.

Prob basic stupidity, so bear with a troubled mind! I've been dumped with an Aspire 5020 to get up and running by a mate. Hard drive was fritzed so I got a second hand 80 gig drive and installed it. Went to install XP on the drive, but it would only format to 62%. I decided to partition it, with the operating system on C. Created a partition of 10gig. XP then installed with no problem.

Now I cannot see anything but C drive (10 gig) in My Comp, but if I open Disk Management, C Drive shows in the top section, but the rest of the drive only shows up as 60 gig unallocated space underneath.

Could some very kind person tell me how I can allocate a drive letter/format this unallocated space please?

Many thanks!

A:XP Pro 64: unallocated disk space

In Disk Management, right click on that unallocated space and create new primary partition. That should do it.

Edit for additional thoughts:
Before you do that, I can't remember if XP64 will allow you to expand a partition into unallocated space or not. If it does, I would urge you to consider giving the C partition more than 10 gigs. Sure XP will install and run fine on less, but a few months down the road you'll be running low on free space. Might be safer to give it 20. Or even consider just having the drive 1 big partition... If XP's disk management won't let you expand it, you might make and boot off a gparted disk and expand the partition that way.

Honestly, I would say get a bigger drive. 60GB isn't really enough for windows and core programs. You can uninstall all you want. Eventually you will run into the same problem.

A:Wiping a HDD and reinstalling

There is no need in such programs unless you are extremely paranoid.

Formating the drive during Windows installation and then using Drive Wiper from CCleaner to wipe free space after installation will be plenty sufficient. CCleaner also has the option to wipe the entire drive if you choose but thats not really necessary.

Hi All,
I have seagate 1.5TB external HD out of warranty a couple months ago(have it for 2 years). Today, I just checked HD tune, it shows health: warning because of reallocated sector count and spin retry count. So I just do the seatools test: I ran short driver self test pass, short generic: pass. I ran Long generic pass. Could someone tell me that should I worry or do something about it?Thanks for any helps!

A:Drive has warning in HD tune, passes Seatools -- should I worry?

You should always worry about your data. I have had hdds pass manufacturers diags and end up failing shortly thereafter, other pass and are fine for years. Keep in mind: the failure rate of hard drives is 100%, it's not a matter of IF it will fail, but WHEN. If it is a primary drive in your computer, then I would purchase a new one and clone the data to the new one. Keep the possible failing drive for non-trivial data, or put it into a system that is not as important/does not need backed up. Hope this gets you going in the right direction. Take care!

Restored laptop (Acer Aspire 5735, OS Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit) to factory settings a few months ago and noticed that there was a lot of space being used up on C: drive even though I hadn't started installing programs and putting files back on to laptop.

Used SpaceSniffer to see where all the space was being used up and it only found the C: drive to have size of 38.1GB even though it should have 69.6GB. Also ran WinDirStat and that also said C: drive had size 38.1GB.

Any suggestions on why there seems to be 31.5GB missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

A:Missing hard drive space after restoring laptop to factory settings

"it should have 69.6GB"...
Is the drive 80GB unformatted? Did you format the drive when starting the restore? This is known as a "destructive" restore. If you didn't, it is possible that the old Vista files are still on the drive, along with the new files, taking up the space

Hello tech forums My friends computer has been having a very odd issue regarding cpu usage I noticed it when trying to play DC universe online and noticed big fps issues in character creation all settings being turned down After that I monitored resources to see if anything is amiss and soon enough I saw my cpu usage randomnly spiking Also it easily hits and is probably trying to use more when DC Universe is on The other odd thing I saw was that the cpu usually operated at a higher frequency than actually being used in resource manager I have uninstalled Startup toolbar updater thinking it was using too. reason. Already for no malware overused CPU free tested being too much resources and have used the malware tech support to see if it was a infestation of any kind No dice all scans came up relatively CPU being overused for no reason. Already tested malware free too. clean My only other thought is that it might be DMA being reverted to PIO or some software issue This is my last shot before I reformat this frigging labtop gt lt Only thing stopping me is the possibility that it might be hardware though I can t imagine why On another note maybe the cpu is just messed up Whenever it spikes i don t see a reason why nbsp

A:CPU being overused for no reason. Already tested malware free too.

Okay some new observations. With a room temp of 12 C my CPU idles at 45 C. Mobo is seeing 25 C during this. Also just watching the CPU usage through speed fan for a couple of hours I noticed that it likes to dance between 2% - 5% constantly. Occasionally spike to 30% or 50%. Also, it can't hand DC universe at all. Through CPU-Z The processor seems to be acting normal. It runs at half power when it's not being used much and jumps to normal speed. That might explain a little bit of spikage, but it's performance overall doesn't make sense. It shouldn't be jumping so high when I start DC online.

It use to be used for ReadyBoost but I disabled that and I can't figure where all the space went

A:Missing space on USB flash drive

I'm not sure exactly what "Fix and scan for bad sectors" would do to a USB Flash drive since it's my understanding that it's a tool for mechanical hard disks only. If you haven't already I'd backup your data off of the USB flash drive and attempt a format of the memory.

A:Ran out of space on partition with Windows installed on it

You can extend the partition that you have installed Windows into, but in my opinion it would be a better idea to use a program such as Easus Partition manager; at;
The free (Home) version is fine for a job like this.
An alternative I have used is at;
These programs work in a similar way, by showing the partitions as they exist now.
You click once on the one you need to resize (to highlight it), then right-click, choose 'resize', drag the end markers out to where you want the partition to be,
click 'apply'. That's it, it does all the rest, and can take a few minutes to complete.
Note that it is a very good idea to when making major changes like this, to make a system image onto an external hard drive, just as insurance. But this method has worked perfectly for me on several different makes of drive, (1TB Seagate, 4 partitons) and
Iomega 320GB (3 partitions).

A:Nvidia GT220 problems with Borderlands, Dead Space and others

I would switch back to the 9800GT, the GT220 is quite a low spec card. Nvidia is known to re badge cards, and from memory the 8800GT, 9800GT and even the GTS250 where based off the same architecture just with minor improvements. For a upgrade card I would chose either a GTX 560 or Radeon 6950, has some brands both at $299, they should last a couple more years. Also you will need a new Power supply, go for a nice 850W like the corsair HX range which has 70A on the +12v rail. most high end cards need atleast 40Amps or more and minimum of 550W.

I hope this helped abit.

A:Radeon HD 5870 Crossfired low fps on Dead Space 2?

Probably a Crossfire driver issue I would guess. Have you tried playing the game using one card?
You may need to wait until AMD release a newer version of the CrossfireX application profile for some better compatibility. The present CAP was a 24 Jan release which would indicate that the driver itself is around a month old.

Single card performance shouldn't give you the same grief. It looks less than graphically demanding judging by this review benchmark out today.

I'm sure there is more factors involved and it wont make a huge difference but for the most part which is more important for gaming? (running windows 7) for example a 500gb 7200rpm 16mb cache hdd vs a 2Tb 5400-5900rpm 64mb cache.

A:Cache space vs RPM for gaming?

10,000 rpms is better but then again you have heat and PSU requirements. I use 7,200RPM either 16MB or 32MB cache. 1TB or higher users larger cache as large as 64MB. But don't buy those Green HDD they're slower and to be green and save power they spin slower. 7,200RPM is much faster less wait time. But you give up green features. The large cache just holds more I/D before it's needed. So best to use a fast spinner than a slow one.

The extra tools have file space cleaners that will show you what else you can free up? If you search for *.dmp, *.bak, *.GID, *.tmp you can remove these. I won't remove Zero bit files that are needed for the OS and programs. Some *.txt can be remove those take eat up space if you have to many of them. I would copy them all into one file though. When I build a system I disable and delete the system restore cache, Offline Files also. Remove Windows apps like MSN Messager, MSN Browser, Games, Wall-paper, *.cur *.bmp, *.jpg, *.png But make sure what you delete is not needed.

Also say you did all of that above, you might think it's time to buy a larger HDD. Also scan the system for pest also. Pest like to take up huge space also.

My Lenovo IBM R has always been a bit tricky to work with However I ve recently discovered that it doesn t gauge hd space properly The hard drive is rated for G with an actual capacity of G Not too long ago it suddenly went from saying I had about G free then G free I know that isn t right because my files added up to about G I do a lot of sound editing using high-quality WAV files I cleaned out some older files reducing what I had to about G TreeSize thinks incorrectly drive space is gauging Hard the hard drive is only G but it clearly shows quot G out of G free quot in places This is taking hidden folders into account and I ve already checked system Hard drive is gauging space incorrectly restore and hibernation They weren t doing anything out of the ordinary Showing G out of G is significant I think because that s exactly half of the stated capacity The disk defragmenter analyzer also seems to be broken Possible virus Please give me a few suggestions I m thinking about reinstalling XP to fix this and some other issues I know there are similar topics like this what has been suggested didn t seem to do anything I have a screenshot of TreeSize but I can t post it yet nbsp

I am attempting to fix my sisters Windows XP machine. She had another party attempt to fix it not too long ago and he ended up putting a bad copy of Windows on the pc and she is unable to validate. Not only is she not able to validate but she also has a worm infecting her pc that we have been unsuccessful in removing. I attempted to reinstall the OS and got to the point of choosing where to install the OS and found that he had created 2 partitions and had not only reinstalled on the C: drive but had also reinstalled on the 2 partitions he created. My thought is that I could just wipe the drive and start over. With that in mind, does anyone know of any free software that can be used to complete this task and also any recommendations would greatly appreciated.

A:Wiping hard drive

You don't need third party software. During Window XP Setup you have the opportunity to remove one of the partitions which will give you one large one (the whole hard drive). You then can format the whole drive and continue with Windows installation after that.

Till now, I've been using esnips for (non bit torrent) free file sharing. Problem is:

esnips started requiring the esnips download manager for any esnips download and
The new esnips installer includes sneakware: it installs its own home page, search page, etc. unless one carefully reviews and unchecks all the installation options
So everytime i give someone a file sharing link i don't want to worry about warning them about the sneakware (and worse yet, they overlook the options and install the sneakware by mistake)
Any other good site recommendations? And would you know how they compare to ensips offer of free 5GB storage with 200MB limit per file?

A:Recommendations for free file sharing sites?

DropBox is pretty awesome; I use it a lot. If you upload via the desktop app, there's no limit on the file size, but you're limited to 300MB per file if you use the web browser uploader. The max for free storage is 2GB I believe.

Some of the RAM is used by/ reserved for, the computer's BIOS.

Also, the GB to MB conversion is not as exact as you think. (It goes by 8s, not by 10s)

I'm in a difficult situation here. I have had over 3 years of free ADSL internet at my home now (due to a mistake with the ISP). Anyway, my speed has been stuck at 5mbps ever since, with no download/upload limit.

Today though, I've noticed that my ISP has an option to get fiber optic internet, which is 40/40mbps currently and the speeds will go up soon...

But if I switch, I'll have to pay for it... So do you think fiber is worth it? Or should I just keep my 5 mbps for the years to come

I'm finally going to get a domain name after years of using my ISP's free webserver. I'm almost set with a name. I think all the words in the dictionary has been taken. Does anyone disagree?

I want to dive further in the realm of web programming so I thought I'd look for more feature rich web servers. My ISP only provide basic html stuff. Since my website is simple and I doubt it will garner much traffic anytime soon, I thought I'd stay with free service rather than pay $50/year when I'm the only one visiting the site and still learning the ropes. I need advice on which free providers I should look into and hopefully ones that you can personally vouch for. Googling is easy but I don't want to simply pick one on the top of the list if there are far better.

My internal HD is total 10GB, last night it was 1.80GB, which is correct , but when i turn on my computer today, it reads this:

I check the temp folder, no large files there. I did a clean up, nothing. I notice it does this sometimes, but haven't done it in a long time, sometimes my internal hd will just disappear and come back a few hours or when it wants too.

I also notice in safe mode it says i have 2.30GB left, but when i get out of safe mode it says 1.80GB, but right now, it reads 900MB ????????????

Should i do a check my hd for errors?

A:Internal HD space disappeared

Do the below cleanups

Run CCleaner (get SLIM at bottom no Yahoo toolbar)
Run twice or more on Cleanup temps, then on left click Registry then Scan for issues also repeat till clean. You may have this from the 8 Steps.

Run ATF-Cleaner Temp and Registry, repeatedly until no more found.

Fantastic cleaner. (When installing uncheck Relevant Knowledge do not install)

Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk- System Restore and create a new Restore point. Name it "Cleanup at TechSpot". Or something meaningful to you.

Then Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Cleanup
Click OK to accept C:
Select all Boxes
Then click More Options
Here click System Restore and OK to "Are you sure" and the OK to Run.

As this runs it clears all but the most recent Restore Point but it does one other thing that can contain infested files and a huge amount of disk space.

It clears what is known as Shadow copies which are used by specialized back up programs.

This is if you have the Volume Shadow Copy running which is the default.

If you have not already done so go into System properties-Performance settings-Advanced-Virtual memory (the Page/Swapfile) and note your current setting. Then set c: to no pagefile and click OK. Then add it to d: and save.

OK, I've had this happen before, such as when I installed AVG AV. I know the trick for the IRPStackSize reg edit.

However, I am encountering more and more of this on my network on CPU's and drives that never did this before. Strangely enough, it may affect only some of the drives on a CPU and not others. I've tried all different settings for the StackSize value and it does no good. None of these CPU's has had AV on them as they don't sit on the web and are on a closed network. I had one CPU that was fine this morning and on the next reboot I could not share a video folder any more, but every other share off it worked fine. Anyone else encountering this?

Actually, getting 111GB free space after installing a 120GB drive sounds right. (I just happened to install a brand new Fujitsu 120GB drive and also ended up with 111GB free space)

This is NOT due to files you see on the hard drive but primarily due to formatting overhead (i.e. space on the drive reserved just to support the file system and keep track of all that 120GB and how files and info are distributed across it.

Sounds strange to me. I would use a good program such as Acronis to take a look. Also other recovery software. There are a variety of software programs (none good and free) to rescue your data, which you can find on and
I would use Acronis for a first look. It can often identify these missing partitions without erasing data.
We have very good luck recovering missing files using a number of recovery programs... even when the partition has disappeared.
Just go slowly.
I would put that drive in a USB enclosure and install a new drive, then using recovery software recovery all that is recoverable.

So i brought a new Compaq Presario A900 laptop last month (26th April to be precise), this thing is supposed to have a 160 GB hard disk, it came with two partitions, one of 139 GB and other of 9.65 GB which has system restore files on it.

As it is 10 gb is missing (im not sure how this happens)

And since then, something is eating up disk space in bouts of gbs, like i have stored only about 5.35 + 1 GB (for program files from my side if u take), rest is supposed to be windows stuff.

Oh yes one thing, this thing has windows vista on it and im new to vista. i dont have technical know how of its page file system or system restore or whatever... but i really wish to know and stop whatever is eating up my disk space, coz now im left with only 96 GB (i should be having atleast 115 or sth)

Anyone got any clue?

That's because storage manufacturers count bytes differently from customers. To a manufacturer GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30), to a customer it's 1,000,000,000 bytes, so there's already a 70/73.7 MB difference in just one gigabyte.

My system is showing low disc space and when I try to install programs its getting cancelled because of that.

I tried cleaning up my disc yet the problem exists, I always use the cleaning program.
yet its showing low disk space. Only my C:\ drive is full rest of all the drives have a lot of space. I tried uninstalling couple of programs from the C:\ drive but yet the problem is there. I was actually trying to uninstall some programs from the C:\ drive and installing it to the other drives but after I uninstalled it, it is not getting installed saying that I have low disk space.

Is there any way to change the location of the programs in the C:\ drive to other drives without actually uninstalling them.

Can I increase the space of my C:\ drive by adding a hard drive?
Can anyone guide me to add an additional hard drive?

A:Disk space showing low, cant install new softwares

Hi gopu again!

Actually you are not supplying all the information required

Your harddrive is 80Gig
Your C drive is Used? Free? amount. You can find this information by going to My Computer-->Right click on C drive-->Select Properties

Please supply this information

...and installing it to the other drivesClick to expand...

What other drive?
Is it an external drive? An internal Drive? Or another Partition on your single HardDrive?

Is there any way to change the location of the programs in the C:\ drive to other drives without actually uninstalling themClick to expand...

There are tools that can do this, but I wouldn't advise this
You are best to uninstall fully first
Be aware that installing programs to other drives (other than C drive) will, in most cases, still install some files to C drive (ie into Windows folder)

This question is too confusing! Please re-word it.

Can anyone guide me to add an additional hard drive?Click to expand...

This depends on if you have Sata or only ATA availability on your motherboard
Also this will also put more strain on your Power Supply and Motherboard
In most cases, it can be easily done, as long as there is availability of motherboard connection, and physical area available.

The program I use for audio editing is Audacity.

It is an amazingly popular open-source audio editor that really packs a punch. Just note that you'll need to download an additional .dll file to output in .mp3 format. Give it a try.

A:Need help server is running out of space

It all depends on what you have inside that server. How many free bays for hard drives? How many free SAS/SATA/SCSI ports?

Yes, you could get an iSCSI box, but that would be a bit over the top. No need to go shelling out that much money when you could get the same disk space for much less and with better performance.

In general you would add a hard drive (or a RAID array) and clone the D: partition there. Then you would remove the D: partition from your current system drive (or array) and use the free space to expand C:

I have a Toshiba Satellite, that only allows 4 DVD zone changes before it refuses to change zones. I do a lot of travelling, and my computer is stuck in zone 2 now, when I usually live in Zone 4. Does anyone know any FREE (not free for 30 days) software that I can download to fix this problem?

A:Region free DVD player, free!

I wonder if you had an external (USB) DVD Drive set to region 4, and an internal drive set to 2 (actually I've never tried this, but it should work)
Ofcourse this is not free (and actually dearer than DVD Free software) but at least it avoids having another program running all the time.

A:Raid 0 setup chewing thru storage space

Selecting all files in the drive root and checking the size of these does not give you a correct measure of disk space. (You didn't select all the hidden/system/inaccessible files in all the hidden/system/inaccessible subdirectories, did you?) If you do not have access to a file or directory, then you can not find out how big they are either. For example, if you have several users in your computer, then one user cannot see the My Documents folder of another user and therefore cannot count the sizes of the files in there.

As an administrator user, run a disk visualisation program like Seqoia View to get a nice overview of the disk space used.

Also, filesystem cluster size and the amount of files affect the efficiency of disk use. If you formatted your filesystem with 64K clusters, then you waste 32K per file on average. If you have a lot of small files, then you lose even more. A million 10K files means 64GB disk space gone.

I've had this problem with my hard-drive for a long time. My harddrive capacity is 145GB but now I only have 2.71GB remaining. Ive checked how much space ive used up and its not that much:

videos - 15.16GiB
music - 11.81GiB
apps - 288.39MiB
p0rn - 6.37GB

add up all of that, and my downloads folder it comes out to me using 34 GB of my harddrive.

i think this has to do with me not formating my computer correctly, when i was reinstalling windows xp. maby i need the program, "Partition Magic". But im not sure.

Someone please help me...

Partition Magic costs money to buy.

Gparted is free:

You may also want to download CCleaner:

And check your download folder more closely. Some sharing programs like B!ttorent (as an example) make the shared folder look like it has hundreds of gig in (ie shared files) when it really doesn't.

If you have any of these sharing programs, I'd remove them.

I am new and would like your help. my CD-rom drive is showing no files in it.....
when i right click and see its properties, in it the USED space AND AVAILABLE space = 0 bytes......Please HELP!!!!!!!!!

A:CD DRIVE-SHOWS-O bytes space

That usually means either

There is no CD in drive
There is a CD in the drive BUT the drive can't read it
Why don't you start by putting a pre-recorded CD in there that you know is good and it has read before. Then check properties again

/* Edit - Added Comment */
And since you call it a "CD-ROM" drive make sure it is a CD in there, not a DVD as a drive labeled whose name is listed simply as "CD" drive won't read DVDs (vs. one labeled CD/DVD drive)

My roommate's ThinkPad has a hard drive that displays it as having 88GB of total space. It says he has 14GB of free space. However, I ran WinDirStat on it to see what was taking up space, and it only found 27GB worth of data. The same thing happens if I select all the files on his hard drive, 27GB. System restore is turned off, his recycle bin is set to a small size. I can't figure out what is taking up all that space. It's almost as if there is an invisible partition or some program is reserving 40GB of space for something. Any ideas as to what could be taking up this space?

Sorry, we just figured it out. He unknowingly has been backing up his hard drive using IBM's provided backup software, and for some reason those backups did not appear in any directory.

OK, so I have a 256MB flash drive. I've been using it for over a year already. Suddenly, I noticed that I cant use the drive's full capacity. After trying to write to more than 50+MB of files, that flash drive automatically goes to write protect mode. I have to replugin the drive and format it so that I can use it again, BUT I still cant write past 50+MB. It seems that its capacity decreased from 256MB to 50MB.

Anyone knows how I can fix this? Thanks

A:Missing 16gigs harddrive of space!

You can't fix it. Disk formatting used a big chunk of your drive. Disk manufacturers use 1000 bytes as a megabyte but a megabyte is actually 1024 bytes. They use the smaller measure to make their drives look bigger.

hi all!

i am having a problem with my c drive(the one which contains the windows xp installation).yesterday it had 700 mb of free space.and today i find it 70mb only!! and still decreasing.right now it's 3 mb
i just wanna mention that i started downloading something yesterday using downlaod accelerator and it's 1.2 gb in size.could that be the cause?may be it's creating a temp file or something.does that mean that the problem will end after it finishes download.or is it a virus or something.
anyone got a clue??
thnx alot

A:disk space decreasing by itself!!!

The temp files from your download could be causing this to go away. I'd say let it finish then see what happens. If no change then someone would be glad to help you.

My free space on partition C is dropping automatically, it's now about 11 MB
although i'm using only about 30-40 GB from 58 GB....i made a scan from viruses and i didn't find any thing..

A:Free space problem

Open up the task manager and see if there are any processes you don't recognize. Also you could try to find a program (I've heard of several, never used them though) that tells you what folder(s) are using the most space on your hard drive.

Hope this helps!

So I got a little problem on my hands and I'm completely dumbfounded by it. My C Drive is 10 GB's, (I know small). My doc and settings folder has using 1 gig of space, my Program files is taking 1 gig of space, and my Windows folder is using 4 gigs of space..... My Drive has 1 gig of space free. Any Ideas at all where that extra 3 gigs is at? This has been frustrating me for a while now and have no Idea whats up.

A:HD Space being used.... But by what?

It's your boot record (partition table) that's the problem.

When you startup you comp, the BIOS reads the Master Boot Record (MBR) of your master drive. The MBR has a list of boot records (or partition tables). It must have at least one. Each boot record lists the info for that partition including it's size. Either when the partition was created it didn't use all the hard drive space or the boot record has been accidentally overwritten with an incorrect size.

There are two ways to correct this. You can use Recovery Console and run fixboot and fixmbr or some disk partition manager. Or you can manually edit the boot record using PTedit. The latter is tricky and if you make a mistake, it could disable your computer.

Hi folks,

I've got a 120 GB HDD chopped up into one 42GB primary partition for Windows XP and one extended partition with a 56.9 GB logical disk for My Documents. (Never mind the sizes, they just came out that way). Anyway, this leaves me with 11.36 GB unallocated. I want to add 2 GB to each of my existing partitions and use the remaining space for a Debian Linux install.

1. How can I add more space to the existing NTFS partitions using gParted?
2. What filesystem, if any, do I need to format the remaining unallocated space to so I can install Debian?
3. (Off topic): Is Debian even a good Linux distribution for me to start using, as I'm a complete newbie to Linux? (I've got the minimal netinstaller ISO burned to a CD)

A:Assigning unallocated space to existing NTFS partitions (with gParted Live)?

i do not know anything about Linux so I will not offer an answer to that. but u can use Partition Magic 8.0 as it will do about anything to any partition as far as formatting, distrubutting space or anything like that and can change what it is formatted as ( NFTS, FAT, FAT32)

I know I know The first thing that comes to mind is that a hard drive that claims that it can store X amount of GB s can only really store a certain percent of that However the problem I have isn t that - it just seems that my hard drive is randomly using more space than it should I m running Windows Vista Business with a gb Sata Seagate hard drive When I use right click gt properties on my C Drive it tells me that I have used up GB when I m pretty sure I have not In fact turned off the hide hidden files view thing and selected everything in my C Drive and double checked once again right clicking and going into the properties section Lo and behold it tells me that I have only used up GB Now my first instinct tells me that there is something wrong with my hard drive and that I need to format it I ve had this problem a while back and a simple format fixed that However I can t format the hard drive this time as I foolishly didn t partition it properly when I installed Vista and the supremely long installing time really discourages me from formatting my computer for a meager GB of missing space Having just moved to Vista from XP recently I m also not space..? hard drive Missing sure about whether or not this is a Vista thing or not I thought about defragmenting my hard drive as a solution but I m not sure if that even fixes anything as to my understanding defragmenting only makes your hard drive run smoother Any solutions would be great I may have said that GB was a meager amount of space but I d still like to have my computer running in tip-top condition Thanks in advance Again Edit Oh yeah I forgot to add I m also open to suggestions of programs that let you partition your harddrive without forcing you to format the whole thing I ve heard of Partition Magic but not sure if that works Missing hard drive space..? with Vista nbsp

A:Missing hard drive space..?

Select all and click properties, you are given two numbers - Size and Size on disk.

Also, if you have multiple users on the computer, you do not have the right to enumarate the files in the home directory of the other user. So these files would not be counted in the "select all" method.

Hey all

I recently bought a Leadtek DTV1000 TV Card, but had problems with the digital reception in my area. This card worked fine with my mother board. I traded it in for the DTV2000 for its analogue tuning.

I put the new card but i cant use the twin output on the Radeon 9600 any more. It says Code 12 - The device cannot find enough free resources that it can use.

I have removed my soundcard and my other PCI DSP Audio card to leave just the vid card and the TV Card in there to see if it would free up, but the error remains.
