Deciding on buying new graphics card and need help with motherboard slots

Q: Deciding on buying new graphics card and need help with motherboard slots

Hello, I have recently decided to get a new graphics card for my HP Compaq Presario CQ5320Y. After opening it up I only see one PCI slot and 2 black slots that are unkown to me. I have done a little research and some sites say that there are PCI express slots but i am not sure which ones those are. Anyways after looking around, I decided on this card but am still not sure if its the best i should get, an suggestions? I am looking for a card for mostly gaming and am willing to spend up to $100 - $150 tops. This is the one I have decided on so far. I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Deciding on buying new graphics card and need help with motherboard slots

The HP Compaq Presario CQ5320Y does have 1 PCI-E x16 slot and 1 PCI-E x1 slot. The best option for you would be to purchase an ATI Radeon HD 5770. It will give vastly superior performance compared to the GTS 250. However, for either card, your PSU will be insufficient. Presently your system has a 250W PSU. You will need one in excess of 400W with sufficient amperage on the 12V rails. The Corsair 400CX should be good enough but the 450VX is a safer bet.

Hello,

I currently have a 256 MB ATI Radeon x800 graphics card.

I've found that it doesn't quit run World of Warcraft like it used to. I checked Newegg and found that PCI Express 16x cards are really cheap.

Could someone suggest something that could out-perform my current graphics card for less than $75 or so?

I was considering this one... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130297

I really don't know much about graphics cards, so maybe I'm totally off here.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

So I will be adding another GB of RAM (once I figure out if it's the 4th slot or the 4th card itself causing problems) and I want to get a new graphics card. Here are my specs:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 13
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 3071 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS, 384 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 305234 MB, Free - 176130 MB;
Motherboard: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO.,LTD, MS-7514
I don't know how to find out if one is compatible or not. I am not exactly sure how strong my power supply is at the moment but that won't be a problem, because I can just get a better one if I need to. Any suggestions? I'm not exactly loaded on cash either.

Hi all
Guys please help me out in deciding the video card. I have two options Xpert vision nvidia 9800 gt 512MB and Xpert vision radeon HD 4850 512mb. I'm getting nvidia 9800 GT for a lower price than HD 4850. So what do you think i should go for. How much is the performance difference between these two cards?? I've read that HD4850 beats 9800 GT the only problem with 4850 is heating issue which also can be solved by increasing the fan speed. Also one more question what difference does a manufacturer makes in performance of a video card?? is Palit Xpert Vision a good brand?? Please help me out please i'm going to buy the card soon. I've a low budget....so if there's not much difference in performance i think i should go for Nvidia 9800 GT.

My personal opinion is that ATI is better so i was wondering what ati card would be worth the money? ive searched the site and the x800 is definetly out of the picture and the 9800 is still a reach so i was wondering, is the 9600 worth it? for $200 am i getting anything much better? or would i have to get a 256mb card to see any difference? any feedback would be greatly appreciated...my other specs are P4 with Hyper Threading 2.6ghz,512ram, XP Home SP2

Hi My brother is getting a new graphics card He currently has the ATI Radeon HD and it works He s looking at getting the ATI Radeon possibly HD series not sure It s the gig model In a Newegg review one person says it quot takes up two PCI-E slots quot Does this mean it takes up that much space or do you literally have to have two full length x slots side by side Or does it mean those little ones The picture just shows one I m not experienced in this kind of stuff so I two up PCI-E slots? Graphics takes card don t even know if a Graphics card takes up two PCI-E slots? card can take two of those Second question Is the Powerlink brand of Power supply units a crappy brand or a decent one If it claims to have watts what is it really rated at The card says it recommends a w power supply Is that an overrated estimate like it seems to usually be with cards The newegg reviews indicate that this card has a low power usage Also my brother s computer is only using one HDD and a small LCD monitor I ve heard that some cards need a certain amount of amps on the v rail How do you check your power supply s amount of amps His computers current specs AMD Athlon x ghz Ati Radeon HD gigs ram ddr g HDD nbsp

A:Graphics card takes up two PCI-E slots?

Hey there, To answer your first question it is the card that physically takes up two slots of space not two actual PCI-E slots. I don't know of any card that does that yet.

As for the PSU I have never heard of the brand so there is a fair chance that it is a low quality unit and it is anyone's guess as too how much wattage it can output.

I would recommend any of the following brands with around 500w for that card;

Corsair, OCZ, Seasonic, FSP, Coolermaster, and Antec.

HI, I'm planning on buying a new graphics card. I have an Inspiron 720. I have a premade computer with Intel Intetlrgrated Chip set G4/G3. Please ask for extra specs if required.

A:How to install/see available graphics card input slots

First you must look in the manual (and in the case) to check there's a pci-e slot and what version it is. Recent gfx cards are v3, which is somewhat backwards compatable with a v2 slot, but not necessarily with an earlier version.

Next you have to decide what type of gfx card you need - either hi-end for gaming or something cheaper, say, just to run multiple monitors. For gaming, you should check the websites of games you are interested in to see how powerful a card you need to play their game.

When you've got an idea of the type of card you need, you should check that the psu in your pc can power it. Store bought computers are built down to a price and don't allow much leeway for extra power demands (eg from the extra gfx card). A lower end card will probably run ok with the standard psu. A powerful card uses more watts and usually needs extra 12V power connectors that plug directly into the card. Standard desktop psu's can't usually supply enough watts for a hi-end card (or have the 12V aux connectors). In that scenario, you have to invest in a new psu.

A few ideas for you to think about.

Hi i am building my own computer (1st time),

I was considering buying the Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P motherboard as i want something suitable for gaming, hd movies, multitasking and a bit of everything.

The only issues i have with it, is that it has 2 PCI slots and i would prefer 3, but its not essential and that it has 2 video card slots.

I am also planning to buy a high end video card.

First off, Is it beneficial to have 2 video card slots when only using one monitor?? Can you even use 2 video cards with 1 monitor??

And is this a suitable motherboard choice?? Bearing in mind that i hope not to upgrade for a little while.. if not could anyone please suggest some others.

Cheers

Using 2 video card slots gives you the ability to use multiple monitors but the main reason for their existence is gaming performance. Both top GPU manufacturers, ATI/AMD and NVIDIA provide the ability to combine 2 identical cards for increased 3D performance. These technologies are called SLI for NVIDIA and Crossfire for ATI/AMD. So, of course you can use 2 cards with one monitor if you like!

The m/b you chose has pretty good features and uses a nice chipset. In case you decide to use a dual GPU configuration make sure that the P35 chipset supports both companies. Some time ago intel chipsets could only use crossfire.

A:laptops and graphics -- PC card slots, docking stations?

I don't think there's any way to get it upgraded. The only way is to buy a laptop with a fast gpu to start with, which isn't too easy.

A side note: There are usb 2.0 graphics cards to add a second monitor to some pc's, but they are likely much slower than your 5200. I think the company is called triton IIRC, they used to have them at newegg, not sure if they still do.

A:Buying new graphics card

I think you'd need to give us a few locations for websites and how much your budget equates to in local currency. There will be a huge difference in availability of parts and the pricing between US listed items and those actually purchasable in India.

The Seasonic I listed the other day remains the best option for a power supply, and is in my opinion far superior to the Corsair unit. Ultimately though, most main branded power supplies will be absolutely fine at your intended power levels (in terms of hardware).

The decision between AMD (used to be ATi) and Nvidia comes down to two things. Its quite simply the price you are prepared to pay vs. the performance of the GPU. In essence you want to purchase the fastest GPU in your budget. If thats the GTS450 then that is your decision. If you increase your budget you will always find something better, but you then end up in a position where you keep choosing the next fastest GPU and spending even more money.

I just need to know if this card should be compatible with my laptop or find one that is.

A:Buying a new Graphics card

I've seen the green lines with video cards that are burning up (bad fans). That makes me wonder if you've got all the connections made properly. Those little ribbon cables and clamp sockets can be tough.

One other thought: did you go into the Device Manager and Remove (Uninstall) the old 2600 graphics adapter before you shut down and switched the graphics cards?

As for whether the new card is compatible, have you tried contacting Lenovo Tech Support?
I would suspect that if it fits in the laptop it would work.

my friend wants to buy a new graphics card but is only willing to spend a 150 bucks. I've narrowed it down to a couple they are:

any refurbished 6600gt from newegg
a refurbished 6800 from newegg
or any new radeon 9800pro 256mb

i know the nvidias are a little bit stronger but not sure about buying a refurbished one, any input would help.

A:Help buying graphics card

well between those three i think u can go for the 6800 as it will outperform the the other two easily
between i dont know whether it is good to for a refurbished card

so the best advice will be to go for the ATI card as the performance will be good enough as well u get the satisfaction of going for a new card. :grinthumb

I want to change my graphic card so that I can play the latest coming games like call of duty mw2, assassin's creed, homm6, League of legends etc.

I don't have any huge desire to go for ultra graphics and I suppose my budget will also not allow me to go for cards giving that performance.
It will be nice if I can play the above games especially league of legends from medium to high graphics with around 60fps at least.

A:What should i consider when buying a graphics card?

the appalling information given by HP doesnt even detail what kind of pci version it has.
Its definitely pci e and 16x lol, id hazard a guess at 2.0.

Now that doesnt hugely matter as PCI is backwards compatible, and the difference between a pci 2.1 and 2.0 is minimal, the speed tranfers are still the same.

Im going to be blunt and say you cant really upgrade your GPU to anything half decent with your current power supply. As its only 300w it is less than most modern cards draw.
a 500w+ is recommended.

so you need to factor in the price of a branded PSU before you look into getting a new card.

I need a new graphics card as my graphics cards sucks (GeForce4 MX 4000) and so does my graphics card knowledge. But I wanna change that. I have a few questions I hope someone could help answer, thanks:

1. My motherboard can plug both PCI or AGP. Could someone tell me which is superior?

2. Could anyone recommend some low end graphics card that would meet the above requirements please? My budget range is ₤20 to ₤50. MY pc spec: 1.8GHz process, with 750 RAM.

Any gems shared would be appreciated! Thanks alot techies.

The choice of graphics cards is confusing me!

I can get a cheap on from eBay for under £5. (Or very cheap anyway.)
Or I can spend £XXXXX on a really expensive one.

I don't need it for gaming or anything: just standard use.
Won't really be watching videos on it or anything.

Should I just go for a cheap one?

I can get hol dof a second hand Matrox card with dual heads.
Are these OK?

Thanks.

First, let me start off by saying that I'm not the biggest gamer in the world...

I currently have an XFX Radeon HD 7770 1GB and it's just not up to the task anymore. I don't play a lot of games, but I do play the odd one and I would like to take advantage of my monitor's resolution when I do. I also do a lot of 3D CAD work and rendering, so speed there is important too.

I'm looking at an AMD R9 series card, and I've narrowed it down to the 280 and the 280X. The 280X is about $60 more expensive than the 280, but I'm wondering if it's really worth it to go for the 280X. I'm not sure that I'll need all of that power for modest gaming and rendering. On the other hand, it's only 60 bucks.

Opinions? Thoughts?

Thanks.

A:Buying a graphics card - R9280 or R9 280X? Help me decide, please.

If the extra $60 isn't an issue, I'd go with the 280X.

What games do you play when you game? If it's stuff that's not too demanding, then you'd be just fine with the 280. If it's stuff like FarCry 4, Assassin's Creed Unity or Dying Light, then you should get the 280X.

Hey guys.
Right now I have a HP Pavilion a1123c which is pretty good except for the built-in graphics card. Any suggestions on what motheboard both works and is cheap?

A:Need help deciding a motherboard

Take a look at the few PCI cards at www.zipzoomfly.com... anything above $60 and 128 MB will be good... the more you spend, the better they are... They may even have a couple of 256 MB cards left.
They do not have any bad cards... but it is a matter of cost.
When they are gone, they are gone.

Hi, I've got this motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP.
I just went looking around the BIOS, and found out how to use my other monitor (connected via VGA port on motherboard) but not how to use both my graphics card and motherboard internal graphics (Graphics card for main display and motherboard display for alternate display) at the same time. I read that some motherboards can do this, and I would think that mine could, due to it being quite a good motherboard, but am I missing something? I can't seem to find it!

And help/answers will be awesome.

PS. the 2nd monitor is ONLY VGA and my graphics card only has ports for HDMI and DVI, I do have an adapter... for HDMI to DVI... Damn...

PSS. If im unclear, ask in the reply section.

Thanks Again!

A:How to use both graphics card and motherboard graphics at once?

Depending on what Graphics Card you have ... You should be able to run two Monitors of the one Card ...

As for using the Internal and another Graphics Card at the same time ...

That is not possible ... Though it is true that your Motherboard supports Switchable Graphics ...

My motherboard is a gigabyte 71xe4 and has never caused me any problems with my old gfx card (voodoo3 pci). However i just bought a geforce2 64mb mx400 AGP card and now my pc won't start. I have ensured the card is in the slot correctly and have removed the voodoo. When i switch on i just get the 2-1 beeps (2 quick beeps followed shortly after by another). I assume the pc is believing there to not be a gfx card so how do i solve this?

I am on the original BIOS (there is a prob with win 98 dos mode where the fan stops, there is an update to solve it but i never use dos so i dont see the point in risking my bios on an unnessecary update), will i have to finally update my bios to get it to work? Or is there some other way?

Thanks

I will not get into the merits of each motherboard, but the one in your reference has an AGP slot that would take the graphics card - but you mention a PCI card in your sig?

An AGP card would be MUCH faster than a PCI card.

A:PSU, Motherboard or Graphics card problem

read the "NO post" guide in the guides forum.
ensure your case can fit a PSU of adequate size. Do not try to use an underpowered PSU on a new system - you can fry stuff.
The PSU is perhaps one of the most important components in a new system.

Ok, so Im extremely new to the tech world, and I just built my first computer. I've been using my tv as my monitor via my hdmi cable. No problem - i plugged in a spare monitor to install the nvidia drivers, and I assumed I was done. Went to plug in the hdmi cable to the motherboard hdmi slot and it's not working. Am I stuck with using the two ports that are attached to the k620? Or can I use my motherboard hdmi port still? This is going to ruin me if I can't use the hdmi.

Thanks in advance

A:new graphics card - now I can't use motherboard hdmi

You can only use the new video card.

Why are you using a Quadro K620 ?

NVIDIA Quadro K620

You need a dvi to hdmi cable, but that won`t transmit sound, hope that is not an issue. (TV speakers suck)

What is the exact make and model of the PC ?

If you were happy with the PC, then why install the K620 ?

Basically I keep getting Ialmrnt5 display driver errors, even after reinstalling drivers and such, whenever I play WoW.

Thing is, I've had this PC for years and I've been playing Warcraft for about 9 months and never had this problem.

Either way I know I need a new graphics card, the only problem is that my PC was a ****ty one bought from PC world that has an integrated sound & graphics card.

Is there anyway of getting a new video/graphics card without buying a new motherboard/processor?

Also, if I do need to buy a new Motherboard, can you recommend me a decent but affordable one that I can upgrade with better VIdeo cards in the future (yeah, I know, I suck when it comes to computer hardware)

hello i'm new here and i already have a question ...

this is my motherboard:- http://www.asrock.com/product/product_k7vt2.htm - its getting on a bit but i'm very happy with it. i currently have the nvidia geforce4 mmx440 graphics card which is fine and so far hasn't given me that much trouble with gaming provided i keep the drivers updated.

BUT i want to play lego star wars the video game on my pc and my current graphics card doesn't support pixel shader version 1.0. can anyone recommend a card that supports pixel shader without my having to replace the motherboard? seems from my research so far that most of the nvidia 6600 and upwards card that i think i need are AGP 8x which my motherboard doesnt support.

can anyone help?

I don't know how to tell, and there's not much I could find online that could tell me. My computer has a Gateway FX6800-01e motherboard and I'm looking at buying a GeForce GTX 760 graphics card on sale.

This has come about mainly because I realized I need an upgrade after Star Wars Battlefront refused to run on my computer, so if it's not compatible, are there any other suggestions that are? The minimum specs required are either GeForce GTX 660 2GB or ATI Radeon HD 7850 2GB.

A:Graphics Card on my Motherboard - will it work?

It won't interfere with the RAM slots.

The components on a PCI-E card mount on the side that's away from the CPU. The 7950 is a dual slot card, so you'd cover the PCI-E X1 slot that's nearest the X16 slot.

Two questions:

What kind of power supply do you have? You'd need at least 500W, with two 6 pin PCI-E auxiliary power connectors.

Can your case handle a card that is 275 mm (10.8") long? The card is longer than the width of your micro-ATX motherboard.

My question, how can I tell if its my MB or GFX card? Or both?

silly question, but does the AGP/PCI-e slot have a sliding card lock on it? If so, make sure its being used.

Also, as above, use the motherboard as a variable: put the card in another PC. If it works, then its the mother board. If it doesnt, then its the card.

check the games website. it should tell you min performance specs for the computer/card to run the game.

it sounds like you're using onboard video and it depends if you have an agp and or pci slots as to what will be available.

a lot of computers with ob video/sound don't have a lot of options for upgrades.

A:Solved: graphics card for this motherboard?

What games do you want to play/what programs do you want to use? What resolution? Also, tell your power supply model, that will be the only limiting factor here, there's thousands of new and old cards to choose from for you. I would assume your power supply is insufficient and you need a new one(reason: that board comes in a pre-built system and they have crappy power supplies).
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139008
Graphics card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150247
That would be enough for you if you don't want to play the latest games. 100 $ after MIRs.
If you want to play some new games, get Radeon 4670 instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127383

Hey All, i currently own a Dell Vostro 410 desktop and was wondering if my motherboard supports SLI?
Board: Dell Inc. 0J584C A00
If it is not SLI compatible, is there anyway of making it SLI without changing the motherboard.
If the answer is no to the above... then do you suggest i overclock my 512 mb Nvidia 8800GT or just buy a new graphics card with double the memory... the real problem is that i want to enjoy playing high intensive games at 1680x1050 but at the same time not get graphics lag.
Lastly, any suggestions of good graphics card with the budget of ?1-?90

A:Graphics Card/Motherboard Question

I don't think it is SLI compatible, and the only way to change that is to upgrade the motherboard.

If you can stretch to an extra ?10 or so, (?15 including postage on scan.co.uk), then I'd recommend this card GS-250X-YDFC - 512MB XFX GTS 250, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), Mem 256Bit 2200 MHz, GDDR3, GPU 738 MHz, HDTV/DVI, Retail - Scan.co.uk. Or you could get something like an ATI Radeon 4850 as well Computer Hardware - All - GPU - ATI - Scan.co.uk, but again you'd need to stretch your budget a bit more.

The only card you could upgrade to in that price range is a 9800GT or something, but that won't really give you a noticable difference over your 8800GT.

A:Graphics Card - Motherboard Compatibility

It should be compatible, my only concern would be this is a double-height card so if you had something in the adjacent slot space could be an issue.
A bigger concern is your power supply - does it have the required connectors and does it meet the power requirements of the card? It requires a 500w PSU, but you would be better off with a qood quality higher wattage unit.

edit: it looks like it comes with the molex to six-pin adapters, but you still need four free molex connectors.

I was looking at the Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 An for the life of me i cant figure out a good graphics card combination or solo for it, It has 1 PCIe X16 slot to fit the high end card then 1 PCIe X1 then two PCI slots. Its crossfire works as long as the cards are within the same chipset (so 6000 series e.g. 6570, 6670) Has anyone used or have any idea about the best way to use this motherboard? It can support an incredible CPU and A very large portion of RAM but i need to know what kind of GPU (or GPU's) i can place in it before i am willing to set myself to buy it.

Any and all help will be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

I have a Dell 8300 with a ddr motherboard, and purchased a ddr2 graphics card. Are these compatible?

A:Will a DDR 2 graphics card work on a DDR motherboard?

Yes, it will... but our Dell 8300 is not DDR, it is RAMBUS

i was thinking about buying this EVGA 01G-P3-N959-TR GeForce 9500 GT Video Card - 1GB DDR2, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Support, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, VGA Support at TigerDirect.com

for this Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H AMD 880G Motherboard - Micro ATX, Socket AM3, AM 880G Chipset, 1600MHz (O.C.), SATA 3.0 Gb/s, RAID, 8-CH Audio, Gigabit LAN at TigerDirect.com

and i was just wondering if that would work or not.
cuz i want boosted graphics for my games and stuff.

A:can i install a graphics card to this motherboard?

Gigabyte makes a good board
And yes that card will install just fine. (PCI Express) I don't know Nvidia drivers so much perhaps someone that does can chime in.
