Preferred Solution: Logoff / Task Manager / Windows Installer all hanging

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How long has this issue beein going on?What programs do you have running at startup? Have you tried disabling with a startup manager, then re-enabling one at a time?Have you tried using System Restore or System Restore from a command prompt in Safe Mode to return to a previous state before your problems began?

I've been cleaning up a friends PC in Safe Mode after frequent crashes. SuperAntiSpyware removed piles of Trojans & Spyware including the persistent BupProtector.
Now all clean (at least, according to SuperAntiSpyware), but crashes when logging on to a new Admin account in Normal mode. Will logon to existing user account in Normal mode, and appears to run stable, until Logoff or Shutdown, when it hangs whilst "Logging off", and eventually dumps.
Win 7 Event Viewer shows Event ID 1001 source Brother BrLog at time of hang.
I guess I should uninstall Brother printer drivers.
Please help.

my roommate has been having problems with her computer. i installed zone alarm security suite on her computer and have done numerous scans. but when she crtl-alt-deletes it says "task manger has been disabled by your administrator" (admin has not disabled it though) and when she opens a shortcut or an application it says "adobe installer" something or other and "installs" something. I've tried finding out what it was but if i can't get in task manger to see what process' are running when the "adobe" comes up i don't think i can figure out where it's running from. any help is appreciated. thank you.

Check Resource Monitor - does CPU, RAM, HDD, etc... pin at 100%?
START | type perfmon /res

Also check -

1. WERCON -
START | type view | "View all Problem Reports" | 2x-click on line item for additional crash info

2. Reliability Monitor -
START | type perfmon /rel

3. Event Viewer -

Extra info:
ClearPageFile is not set
No AV installed
Firewall disabled
DNS is definitely working, both forward and reverse.

Update:
Looking in the Application event logs suggests this might be being caused due to event ID 6005/6006 "The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> took xxx seconds to handle the notification event (EndShell)".
No other errors / warnings are showing.
Only issue in the GroupPolicy log is event ID 7320 "Error: Computer determined to not be in a site. Error code xxx".
Samba is not deploying any GPOs to our PCs (they are applied locally).
gpupdate / force completes in 10-20 seconds from the command line.

I have win xp home version running on IBM Desktop with 256 RAM and petuim 4 chip. We have 5 users set up on the main screen and several of the users will hang the computer when trying to logoff. I recommend that they log off when not using the computer becasue with only 256 Ram the computer can get kind of slow with 5 users logged on. How can i keep the box from hanging and forcing a hard reboot when these users select logoff???

Thanks Jim

A:WinXP logoff hanging problem

If all of these people are logged on at the same time, you are out of resources. XP uses a lot of resources to maintain multiple users. It's a nice concept, this fast-user-switching, but lacking in technology.

You know how after you end a program using End Task in Task Manager, it asks you if you want to tell Microsoft about the problem? I was able on my other XP system to change an option somewhere so it doesn't ask me that any more. I just can't remember how I did it....

Anyone remember?

Every time I log off or shut down I get a window that says End Program - Task Panel. I end the program but it should end by itself. It just started doing this after I tried to uninstall some programs, including Earthlink, which didn't uninstall completely. I also put in a new battery (BIOS battery maybe? - quarter in size, like a watch battery) because my computer wouldn't start up after a blackout.

Attached is a hijackthis log, if that will help.

I am in need of setting a task to run only when I logoff, reboot or shutdown the computer. Technically, this should be in another forum... as I am running the windows 7 beta. However, since it operates almost identically to vista and I have the same issue in my vista boot partition... here I am.

I experimented with the trigger options "when a specific event is logged" and found some entries for the restart manager/operations etc... is this my 'huckleberry' and if so what are the event id's and other info?

OR---> is there a better way to do this?

Update: used a different utility instead of Task Manager, and it shows dwm (Desktop Windows Manager) not responding. Problem could lie there. Last night I was able to launch and run Spybot. Nothing except cookies found. This morning, can't get it to run again. Basically, programs launch and hang.

Also tried changing display parameters, etc, to relieve the load on dwm, but no luck.

Am heading toward doing a re-install....

I think that once we hit the 6 day mark without a single answer it seemed safe to assume that no answer would be forthcoming.

I'm a retired computer programmer who fixes PCs for people in the area. I charge next to nothing and mainly do it to keep active.

Despite the fact that I'd promised the customer I'd only charge them 20 bucks, they still wanted to have the PC back in a timely fashion. Seems reasonable. I've had it for a week now and I finally just backed up their data and reinstalled Vista. Everything works as it should.

Forums like this are great, and I appreciate the help I've gotten over the years, but sometimes the total lack of response can be incredibly frustrating. I see that relatively simple problems posted to the forum get answered immediately, but the tough ones, the ones that seemingly would interest people with expertise... well, those questions just languish unanswered.

Sometimes you just want some feedback - anything at all, if only to reaffirm your own existence.

Whenever I try to open pics, clipart, etc. the Windows Installer pops up and says, "preparing to install" and nothing happens.

It will not go away when I click cancel and if it does disappear it promptly starts again.

I have to go to Task Manager and End Task to get rid of it.

This started to happen about the same time I installed Office 2007.

I have been to Microsoft, unistalled and reinstalled Office and nothing has worked yet. It is connected to error 1635 but the fix information I've tried references an HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE line that does not match anything in my reg when I go to edit.

Help.

A:Vaio Analysis manager / Windows Installer window keeps popping up

Hello zolboo and a warm welcome to the Forum
I found this on the Sony website. If you follow the instructions it should solve your problem

Quote:
This is the Vaio Personalisation Manager which keeps track of your favorite music, programs etc. As far as I can work out it is designed to make personalised recommendations of music or other things you may be interested in when using Vaio Media Gallery. Rather like Amazon's Personal Recommendations.
If you don't want this service then just disable it. Go to VAIO Analysis Manager and you will find an option something like ' Preference Learning' - just uncheck it and reboot.

Hello. I am wondering why i have so many processes on my task manager, I have at the moment 53 processes and I am only using one browser. I understand that a lot of it is microsoft and windows processes but what I dont understand is when I un-click show processes from all users it has 11 and when I click to see all users it shows 53. I am the only user on this computer. Is this normal? Thanks for your time and help.

A:Windows Task Manager help

53 process showing all users is not to high. Mine has 54 and I run lean and mean.

Windows considers its self as a user and all the other things that are up and running.

Your normal don't worry about it.

I have a process that always seems to start up within half an hour of booting up that takes over 90% cpu and always makes my pc so slow it becomes unusable.

The process starts with the name fingerprint comp but I can't see any more because the field cuts it short.

I do not have any kind of fingerprint software installed (or hw) and cant think what this can be.
Is there a way of seeing more details about the process and does anyone have a thought as to what it might be ?
Thanks

Hi crosslc , welcome to TSG

Maximise Task Manager and click on the Processes tab ( as you describe it as a process I assume that's where you see it ) . Directly on top of the list of processes you'll see headings for Image Name , Session ID , CPU Usage , etc . These headings are divided by a vertical line . Hold your mouse over the divider between Processes and Session ID and then left-click and drag the divider until you can see the full name of the .exe . You can then Start / Search and type in the name of the process to find where it's located on your hard drive . A google search for the process will probably give you a very good idea of the underlying problem and how to deal with it - and of course posting any further information or developments here invariably yields dividends

Does anyone know the run command for windows task manager? I thought it was tskmngr.exe but that didn't work, or how I can rebind these keys to run the exe?

Welcome to TSG and happy birthday!

Piggybacks are not the preferred way to get support so I've split your post to a separate thread, please always start NEW topics when requesting help.

First make sure "show hidden files" is checked in Folder Options > View, have HijackThis and probably a copy of these instructions on the desktop. Make sure your antivirus is updated with the latest definitions.

1 -- shutdown completely and wait about 20 seconds, then press f8 promptly on restart to access the boot menu and select Safe Mode.

2 -- run Explorer and navigate to:

C:\WINDOWS\System32 and send OUAGTNP.EXE to the recycle bin

3 -- run HijackThis and check and 'fix' the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.searchv.com/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.searchv.com/search.php?qq=%s
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A28C2A31-3AB0-4118-922F-F6B3184F5495} - C:\Program Files\BonziBUDDY Web Compass\WebCompass.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [windows sockets start up 32] OUAGTNP.EXE

4 -- do a full system scan with your Antivirus in Safe Mode, then reboot and test for resolution.

If not resolved post a Startuplist instead of the Scanlog: run HijackThis, click Config > Misc Tools, check 'also show minor sections' and click Generate Startuplist.

This hopefully should be short and sweet. I try to keep my processes at a minimum so that I'll have as much RAM as possible. First, I use Windows XP. Now when I do a Ctrl+Alt+Del to open my Windows Task Manager feature, I click the Processes tab to see what's running. I have been seeing two IEXPLORE.exe processes running when I do not even use IE. I use Mozilla Firefox. What's worse, is when I try to end them, they will pop back up again. Why is this happening and how do I keep IE out of my process tray?

A:Getting rid of IE in my Windows Task Manager

Here is some info. regarding IEXPLORE.exe

Name: IEXPLORE
Filename: iexplore.exe
Location: Unknown
Description: Added by the APHEXDOOR TROJAN! Note - this is not the legitimate Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) process, which should not appear in Msconfig/Startup unless you add it manually!
Startup Type: Currently being identified.

Here's a good start to understanding it: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...l.mspx?mfr=trueHere's a more in depth description (requires Internet Explorer): http://www.microsoft.com/emea/spotlight/se...001491050E0E6C3 David Solomon gives some specific examples of what contributes to each of the entries. Finally, the 4th Edition of Windows Internals by Mark Russinovich and David Solomon has even more information about this. But it's awfully heavy reading (I've been reading it for several months now and am only about ? way done!

If negative give us a screen shot of task manager, if that is not sufficient, we may need process exploerer; but just task manager for now.

Is it safe to end a process like wmiprvse.exe or any other process for that matter? That process takes up around 46% of CPU usage sometimes and slows computer to a crawl for like two hours.

A:Windows Task Manager ?

Here is what wmiprvse.exe
Windows Management Instrumentation Provider Service first introduced in Windows XP, and then in Windows 2003. WMIPRVSE is a host process for WMI provider services. It is a new Windows architecture intended to eliminate the previous problems in Windows 2000 where the failure of a WMI provider service would make the whole WMI service fail as, then, WMI provider services were loaded in-process with the WMI Service (a new request to WMI would restart the WMI Service). With the new WMIPRVSE model, failure of a single WMI provider service affects that service only rather than the entire WMI Service. For the layman : this is an essential Windows XP/2003 service which will start whenever a specific piece of software requires its facilities.

Initially while on XP Home Service Pack 1 I was able to cancel any task running shown in the Task Manager window (alt-ctrl-del). About three weeks ago I started getting "unable to terminate process" message when trying to cancel a SYSTEM task (i.e. javaw). This is still the case. I have since installed the SP2 on my PC.

My logon is as an administrator and has been all along. I did not change any settings that could have caused this problem.

Is there a setting that I am overlooking that controls this ability?
If so, how can I correct this situation.

Do you imagine that some malware may have altered my ability?

A:Windows Task Manager

I have SP2 and have done for many months, and I can still End Task on SYSTEM or any other App in Task Manager. I get a Security Warning notice but I can over-ride and end the process. I can't find a setting that could have been altered so it's best to have your system thoroughly scanned by anything you can get hold of. If you happen to have a Registry back-up, it may not be a bad idea to back-up the present Registry files and overwrite with your backup.

I have a Windows XP machine and the Applications tab of Task Manager has just disappeared! There are no tabs at all any more. What comes up when pressing ctrl-alt-del is a single window showing Processes and the only choice you have is to End Process. The Min, Max, and Close boxes don't even exist so no way to close Task Manager except to right click the box on the task bar and select close.

I know of nothing strange that's happened recently or anything that I might have done although I must have done something. At any rate, does anyone have any idea how I can get Task Manager back to normal? I can't end applications anymore since they don't even show.

I did a Search on Task Manager but found nothing that was useful. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Please help with the following issue. Windows XP operating system, in task manager a new process has installed itself. The file is 1080834558:29791167.exe. I have tried to stop the process without success. I searched for and found the file in C:\windows. Deleted the file and it keeps appearing. The file I found did not have the :29791167 as part of the name. Shortly before this process appeared my AVG Free anti virus stopped working. At this point I cannot reload AVG. Can anyone help me with this issue?

These are running in my windows task manager. Can anyone tell me what they are? wuauclt.exe , mwsoemon.exe , kbd.exe

A:Windows Task Manager (help)

wuauclt.exe AutoUpdate for WindowsME
KBD.EXE Multimedia keyboard manager
mwsoemon.exe is a spyware program

First of all download the following programmes: Spybot & Adaware

Update both of them first, then run both programmes and have them fix anything they find.

When you have run and fixed everything with Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware, please reboot before scanning, as not everything can be removed when Windows is running

Go to this page, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it

Do not change anything just yet
Come back to the forum, Right Click and paste its contents here

Someone will come along and have a look at it, and advise you what still needs to be removed.

Hi

My colleague has Windows XP Professional installed and an AMD Athlon Processor.

When he opens Task Manager the CPU Usage always shows 100% even with no applications running.

The PC runs perfectly and performs all tasks reqired without any problem.

Any ideas on what the cause of this might be?

A:Windows XP Task Manager

Try running a spyware and virus scan. You can use trend micros online scan and also download spybot. See if it finds anything.

Don't forget to hit the box at the bottom of the Processes tab that says "Show processes from all users".

Hello everyone,

a quick question..

I just got a new laptop with an i7-4700mq in it.. so for anyone else with 4th gen Intels.. what does your task manager performance tab show? Mine shows the processor at 1% usage, but the speed up at 3.2 GHz which is turbo boost speed I think.. see my attached picture for what I mean. I just remember my previous laptop (i7-740qm) would show it throttling right down to less than 1GHz when nothing was happening.
I have the latest drivers.

Cheers

A:Windows 8 task manager and 4th gen i7

What do you have for Power Options Minimum processor state in the power plan you are using? On default of 5% I got it throttled back, changed to 100% and didn't. I have old i7 620M though.

I have a PC that runs 2000Prof and I was ridden with trojans and viruses that I have finally gotten rid of, unfortunately now when I try to open Windows Task Manager through CRTL-ALT-DEL and click on the task manager, it pops up, but then the window disappears before I can even look at it and it closes itself out. I'm afraid that in all the cleaning and removing that something was accidentally deleted.

This is the screeshot of my windows task manager at the startup without running any other application.

Please have a look and tell me which services are starting unnecessary in my system and how to remove them to free up some RAM.

A:Windows Task Manager

I dunno what Wrapper.exe and DCPFLICS.exe is; you might want to do some searching on that if you don't already know. Make sure you put quotes around the search so it will search for .exe in the right way.

smss.exe is unnecessary; do a yahoo search to find out how to remove it (it's still only 344K though)

I'm not so sure about java.exe, I think you can turn that off. ; I think it will launch automatically whenever your computer needs to work some java programs, though it will take a little longer because it isn't already opened. Nonetheless, comparatively speaking, it's a heavy eater (18 megs of ram according to that screenshot); plus how often do you need to use the full fledged java machine. IMO not very often, so that little extra loading time is worth freeing up the RAM.

I use windows xp. I often notice that my hard drive, well I think it's my hard drive, is whirring away and my computer slows down. When I open task manager it ofter says that my CPU usage is very high, fluctuating from say 20% upto 100% per cent when I have no applications/programs open. When I open Processes in Windows Task Manager, what seems to using up a lot of Mem. Usage is svchost.exe SYSTEM, ybrowser.exe, explorer.exe and avgrsx.exe.

Can anyone explain what is happening and how to cure, thanks

I know this is probably a very elementary question but with the windows task manager, if you click on "proccesses" go to a program running and right-click you get a drop-down menu that reads: end process, end process tree, "debug"(grayed) and set priority. My question has to do with the debug part. Is this discontinued? Is there some way of using it and particularly what exactly does it do?

Many times I have opened the task manager to shut down whatever application happens to be tripping my trigger at the time. I've noticed that there are what appears to be WAY too many applications running under the processes tab. I'm sure that several of them are necessary, but how can you tell what is or is not necessary? Would it be safe to assume that the ones that have the word "SYSTEM" by them are, and the ones with my computer name by them are not necessary for XP to function? Can some or most of the ones with my name next to them be prevented from loading when I boot up? I'm figurin' why run the unnecessary apps when I could be using all those extra gozillion Mbs for Photoshop...

A:Windows XP Task manager

You can find information about start up programmes in the BC startup database (click on "startup programs" at the top of the page); here is listed almost all programs, with advice about whether they are needed, optional, or should be deleted. If you have Spybot on your hard drive, changing to "advanced mode" will enable many useful tools. One of these is System Startup; the information provided there makes it somewhat easier to figure out what each application does or provide a little more detail for further research, and allows you to manage what loads on boot. Many applications will want to run in the background after you boot up your computer; this makes lauching them very quick (since they are there "waiting for you"). The downside to this convenience is that each adds a little to the boot time, and each needs a small amount of processing resources to run in the background.Regards,John

Hello...this is my first post here. I found and used some great advice about another problem, so I decided to join up!

Here is my problem...I am used to using Win 98 and when I am going to load a game I open the task manager and close everything except the following:

iexplorer
systray

By doing that...the games appear to operate better. Now I am using Win XP and when I bring up the task manager there are tons of things going on under the processes tab. Which ones do I need while playing a game like Half-Life 2? I want to get the most out of my system and any little bit would help!

Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Familiarizing yourself with the processes running on your system is the first step to reconizing what you can stop.
You can go to Google and search the internet for the .exe. Always make sure you know what is running before you stop a process.
I hope this helped.

Hi,
This is my first post, so hopefully I am following proper guidelines!

I have a Sony Vaio, that is about 5 years old, with many quirks.
I am wondering if I have unnecessary Processes running that aren't needed

I can't seem to copy and paste them, so here are some high Mem usage ones:

50 processes running/ CPU usage between 1%-10%

Firefox.exe
System
TeaTimer.exe 91,736k
svchost.exe
*explorer.exe
iexplorer.exe 19,832k
iexplore.exe
hpqste08.exe
Evteng.exe
QBCFMonitorservice
S24EvMonitorservice 10,980k

*My IE is currently working on my laptop, doesn't open.

What happens if I just end some processes?

Thank your for your time!

I am running Windows XP. I have a problem with Windwos Task Manager freezing up at times. If I open task manager and select "Switch To" then I am able to use the program that it stopped on. Then when I am finished with the program I am working with, I need to select task manager again to close the screen that opened when I used "Switch To".

What steps do I need to take in order for correct this problem. It happens quite often and is frustrating.

Thank you for any suggestions you may be able to provide.

I suspect some malware tied it up or my Sunbelt Vipre deep scan may have something to do with its disappearance.

Others with the same problem find a fix?

A:Windows Task Manager

Try the fix at Kelly's Korner. Enable the Task Manager - #51 on the right.Right click on it and save the .reg file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

My grandson installed a new CD burner for me yesterday. During this process he brought up Windows Task Manger by using Cntrl+Alt+Delete. This was new to me. Anyway there are lots of *****.exe files on there - they're all .exe files. Mike said I probably don't need all of them.

So I have been putting the individual file names in the google bar to see what they are about. I have got about 1/2 way through and so far I need most of them.

Because this is new to me I would welcome any thoughts on this.

Thanks, Joan

A:Windows Task Manager

Ok I say only keep the ones you need. This will not make them stop. Where are you removing them from? Services or startup? As of startup just get as few as you need. Your pc will start up faster this way.

And you will then just have to manually open them if there not set to run on startup.

Hi there,
I am on a Dell Inspiron 6000 and lately it has been hanging. Is there a way to copy my windows task manager processes on here so that I can have someone analyze it for me? Or should I be looking else where? I have had this laptop for two years now and haven't done any repairs other than I did a format a while back. I wonder if I have something wrong. Maybe I should just take it in to a computer tech to have it over hauled. Although I see that the prices of laptops seem to be reasonable, I might just as well buy a new one? Any ideas people? Peace, Colleen

A:Windows Task Manager

Hi Colleenconnie- Welcome to TSG!

One thing I can do for you quickly is to look at an Hijackthis log, which shows us what is running/starting up with Windows....and it also can point out anything that should not be there... we do this routinely to check for bad software, malware, and other issues.

so I advise this:

Hijackthis:
go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
Click the blue "Download the Hijackthis Installer" link
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please also do this:

Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
Copy and paste that list here in your reply

Hello anyone who is willing to help a novice.

when the task manager window/dialog box comes up there is a button called new task when this is clicked on another window/dialog box appears called create new task.

This "create new task" window has a type in slot and also an arrow used as a drop down, when this arrow is clicked on about 20 applications/ website htmls appear.

Question:

I wish to permanently delete the websites/applications can this be done and if yes how do the deletions.

Very frustrated and sure would be thankful for any help.

Thanks,
Talagi

In the future, so you know: to recover from Updates as apparent cause of Win7 not booting, boot into System Recovery Options to System Restore to before the Update. Also to change Win7 to new hardware you need to Sysprep it's HD first, or run Paragon Adaptive Restore CD after moving the HD but before trying to start it. Memory also cannot be swapped between machines unless it exactly matches spec's.

Unplug all peripherals and all other HD's except the target HD plugged into SATA1.

Reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

While in BIOS setup, set SATA controller to AHCI to try install. If this fails, try IDE mode.

You may have a problem with installer. If retail, clean the disk with soft cloth using outward motion. If you downloaded and burned the DVD yourself, confirm ISO integrity and burn another using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Next write the confirmed ISO (or extracted from DVD with ImgBurn) to flash stick using this tool with Win7 in the drop-down: Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3 | USB Pen Drive. Boot under USB or HD's.

Test your RAM with memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes or overnight: RAM - Test with Memtest86+ then test your HD using maker's diagnostics/repair CD extended scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp

There are other steps to try after reporting back what happens with those given. Or you can install in your other machine, SysPrep the HD to remove all drivers to move to problem machine, or run Paragon Adaptive Restore on the moved HD before starting. SysPrep to move HD to another computer

I have been trying to install Java on my Windows Vista 64-bit system, but every time I download the latest version and run the install, it hangs during the installation. Any suggestions on what I can try? I tried disabling my anti-virus protection before installing, but that did not fix it.

Thanks!

Are you getting it here: java.com: Java + You
If you already have an old version, open Java in the Control Panel and update from there.

Whenever I bring up the Windows Task Manager (by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del), I find that there are way TOO many processes running. My computer is brand spanking new and it is already freezing to the point that nothing functions and I have to power if off manually. I don't like doing that, I think I'm damaging it further. I am attaching 3 screenshots of the Task Manager, yeah that's how many processes are open. Could anyone please have a look at it and tell me which of the processes are unnecessary, what they are and how can I prevent them from starting up whenever I switch on my computer. I am new to windows 8 and do not want to damage anything.

Thanks for all of your help in advance!

Hi,
thanks for reading.
I recently acquired a Gateway p4 desktop computer running Windows xp.
I made the mistake of connecting to the internet with an out-of-date version of norton.
I've since updated norton, but now i'm getting pop-ups about windows security center telling me to run a complete scan. any time i open an IE window it defaults to the same pop-up message. I tried to get to task manager and the option isn't there.

I'm new to this site, and fairly 'uneducated' about these types of problems.
having read a bunch of threads already on this site, i'm assuming i need to run highjackthis and post the results ???

and them something about combofix and posting results ???

i'm not sure what to do, but this is infuriatingly retarding me finishing my PhD and i'm about to lose it.

any help would be much much much greatly appreciated !!!

thanks,
-trout

I am wanting to know if my Task Manager looks normal and nothing is corrupting my system. I have Windows XP.

The main concern I have is Firefox sometimes redirecting to a random site after I try to search something in Google. It only happens once in a while and really can't pinpoint a consistent site that it sends me too..its weird and annoying.

I thought maybe the Task Manager might show something that I can't see.
Thanks and I will take any suggestions. I hope the image is clear enough.
Thank You

Alright Ive got a very annoying problem with windows task manager basically whenever i start it the whole top bar of it is gone with all the options like
minimize maximize exit ect..
witch is not really a problem because i can exit it from task bar but the main problem is that the processes tab and other such is gone and that gets very annoying because my Firefox browser likes to mess up alot and the only way to fix it is to end the process

so anyway to fix this? or is there some way to reinstall it

Hello TheGamerfreak, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like you may be in small footprint mode in Task Manager. Double clicking on the border like in the tutorial below should return you back to normal.

Hope this helps,

Running Win XP Prof. SATA HDD 6 Gig Mem. Velocity custom Computer When I open task Manager there is a IMAGE NAME SYSTEM and it's Mem Usage IS VERY LARGE and my CPU Usage Almost always is sitting at 100%.
I checked on my laptop which is running the same and A LOT of the same programs due to using it for the same stuff on the go. In task manager it stay's at about an Mem Usage of 274. My desktop Mem Usage for the SYSTEM is always well above 100,000 .
Something just isn't adding up? Have done Malyware, AVG, Defrag, Ect still SLOW and the same. Any thought ?
