Preferred Solution:

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please download SmitfraudFixDouble-click SmitfraudFix.exeSelect option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

In search of a new monitor...

Hi, just sold my old Samsung 205BW and started a tiresome search for a new monitor, been through the same thing when I've moved from CRT to LCD. I can afford a 300USD monitor.
So far my list consists in: BenQ G2420HDBL (LED backlit), Samsung SyncMaster 2494LW(BW), Asus VH242H, Philips 230C1HSB, Samsung 2343BW, Philips 240SW9FS (1920x1200).
I tend to go on 16:10 display instead of 16:9 but it's not a must and I'm open to advices as far as they are documented and pertinent.
Will use the monitor mainly for gaming but also for CAD and surfing the web.
Thanks in advance.

A:In search of a new monitor, LCD-LED backlit

$300 will buy you plenty of monitor. what size are you looking to go with? i am using a 23" Acer X233H with my desktop and I love it. i think i bought it for ~$230 back in 2009 and it was under $200 last time i checked. you should be able to go even bigger in the $250-$300 range. i would recommend something with a good contrast ration and around 5ms or less response time. pixel aspect doesn't really matter...

btw Darkseed is amazing

This is an advanced question. I'm just seeing what anybody might have to chip in. So I'm working with a SBS 2003 R2. We have the local intranet (companyweb) that uses SharePoint for the document sharing and what not. SharePoint has a feature that enables users to search on the companyweb page. However, this feature does not come standard. It has to be implemented. I've been finding a couple of different options available. The strongest one seems to be just installing SQL Server 2000 or higher to supplement the back end database for the SharePoint Search. Has anyone had to work with this before and have any suggestions?

P.S.- SBS does install SQL desktop engine "stock" onto the server. But it doesn't have anything actually running in the background. Thanks!

Hi all,

I'm searching for details on the Crescentec CT-DC1100 i.c. used in a chipset to convert streaming video to USB 2.0. I cannot locate their website though there are many hits on the search engine none direct me to their site.
When I try the URL suggested i.e. - it times out.

Any body know where they have gone?

for anyone interested I eventually found a link between Syntek and Cresentec:

"This is a generic driver for Crescentec/Syntek DC11xx series product."

But it does not say what the relationship is between the two companies.

while wondering around my local "PC WORLD" i saw an "IOMEGA CDRW/DVD-ROM/ 7 in 1 CARD READER" drive but it was in an external case and had a hefty price tag (£79.99) which was far too much for my student wallet.
What i was wondering is if it was possible to get this fantastically handy drive to be mounted internally for a lower price?
I have asked IOMEGA but they tell me they have stopped producing the product.

any help is appreciated

This is a run-of-the-mill combo-drive CD-Rewriter/DVD-reader (available from e.g. LG, Toshiba etc.) combined with a run-of-the-mill 7-in-1 card-reader (available from e.g. Jessop, Belkin etc.) in perhaps a special external case.

Combo-drive: £26.- (black)

12-in-1 card-reader: £ 7.49 (to be used with a USB-cable, NOT built-in)

A lot cheaper than Iomega, i would say.

alright, so ive been looking quite a bit on, and wanted to check here about cases. until i see a better case for the price, the antec cases have gotten insanely good reviews all around. great PSU, great design, great price. looks a little too simple for me, i was looking for something a bit more adventurous. however..most of the "pretty" cases come with mediocre or bad psu's..or so it seems. can anybody prove me otherwise? or have any cool case suggestions?

cases ive been looking into: rosewill (so far, my fav, but might have to replace the psu, as with the other cool-looking cases), raidmax, and aspire. im looking to spend around 70-80..100 if it's really worth it. any suggestions on psu's if i need to replace?

A:case search

You need to spend that amount on a decent PSU alone!
Enermax, Antec TruePower, the Fortron PSUs from 400w onwards (with 12cm fan). I love the Hiper Type R 480w.
Whatever case you buy (possibly with the exception of Antec), they nearly all have crappy PSUs, but at least you get a spare for emergencies that way.

Don't be panic, there is always a solution.

You can use the following syntax for searching: ?*?.
For example:
*123 -> searches for file which has the content 123
123 -> searches for files which starts with 123

A friend at work experienced the same problem on his PC. Turns out he had a corrupt indexing file. You could try posting the details from Event Viewer, if that is possible. I wouldn't be able to help you interpreting them, but maybe some of the more experienced members could.

Have you tried disabling Windows Search? I did this on my friend's PC as a temporary measure . Got IE working, although searches were rather slow. It isn't a solution, but it could afford you a temporary -- albeit inconvenient -- workaround.

When i go on Firefox, or IE, or GC, and go to either Yahoo or Google search engine, and search something, and CLICK the link, it redirects me to random websites, usually YellowPages. If i copy and paste the link off of Google and put it in my address bar, it takes me to the site just fine. I contacted my ISP for assistance, and they decided that it wasn't a virus. They had me Reset IE, and IE works again, with searching. Google Chrome works again. But, Mozilla doesn't They had me uninstall Mozilla, and reinstall it, and it was still the same problem. Can anyone help me? My computer HAS been going a little bit slower than usual, so i hope it isn't a virus. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi, do you guys know of any Linux utility -or Windows- that is good for letting me jot down notes --simple ones, just a few words, no more than say 50-- but then later on allow me to search through all my notes for certain keywords? I know it sounds like a job for a mini database or a spreadsheet but I don't want to load a huge program for such a simple task. I'd like something lean and fast that has only those functions: New note, Edit note, Search in notes.

I would thereafter -when I have more time- organize and export my notes to a proper database or spreadsheet.

BTW, I'm using Kontact on FedoraCore6 right now, so it'd be beautiful if the proposed utility is compatible with Kontact.

A:Any utility to write notes and search in notes?

See if you can get hold of an old copy of ACT - anything before ACT2000. This would work as it can run as a TSR and also has a keyword search facility.

The visual aid: press Win+F if you have Win7 machine. That is the search box that I keep getting.

What is happening: Every time I boot into an account (any account, even new ones) search box launches 2-30 times at once. But once I close them they do not come back until next boot

What I tried: Full scan with HitMan Pro, Microsoft Security Essentials, Malewarebytes and TDSKiller. All came negative. I disabled everything from start up and verified it in registry. I tried creating a new account. I stopped all but Microsoft services. I ran Uniblue Registry Cleaner. I ran sfc.exe. I have also tried disabling windows search from features, but that opened up another can of worms.

No the keys are not stuck and system restore is not possible due to age of this issue (that is what you get for not calling me earlier)

Any ideas what so ever?

A:Search box keeps launching on boot

That is an interesting problem. I'm assuming since you cleared everything from Start up (via registry/msconfig) there is also nothing in the "Start up" folder (C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for specific users and C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for all users).

Have you looked to see if the "Restore previous folder windows at login" feature is disabled? It should be located under Tools > Folder Options > View. Could be that somehow that option got turned on, a bunch of search boxes got opened, then the computer got shut down. It's a long shot, but worth a look.

Laptop freeze apparently HD issue (?)

Last edited by mailpup; 9 Hours Ago at 08:33 AM.. Reason: Logs removed per Broni's request. Not malware issue.Click to expand...

Based on this action, I'm assuming someone determined that I don't have a virus, and perhaps they looked at a later post with disk test results to surmise that I have a HD issue. If I am wrong, please let me know. I appreciate the feedback. (And if indeed this thread is in the wrong location, please relocate.)

For those who happen upon this post, I *think* I narrowed the problem down to a faulty hard drive (or bad sectors) - apparently my auto defrag was accessing something that my HD didn't want to share (or couldn't access). [I was hoping to determine if this was indeed the case, but the additional test logs and progress posts have been removed.]

Thanks again for any feedback/advice... -Peter

I'm pretty sure these programs aren't supposed to be there because I just recently formatted the hard drive and started everything over from scratch...I just don't know where they came from or how to get rid of them. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi all,
don't really know what's going on here but a while ago I deleted a bunch of stuff from my computer, but have noticed recently that the Vista start menu search function will keep returning these files in it's results.

for example, a a bunch of holiday results i moved to an external harddrive to put on another computer, are now visible in the results folder that appears, and in duplicate.

when i try to delete these files, Vista tells me that they're not there....(surprising that.) and won't remove them

all subsequent searches keep returning the files, and nothing seems to work.

thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this, and thanks for any help.

My dad is making a Word document with all of his movies and I put hyperlinks on the different sections for him to jump through the 40+ pages from the index on the first page. He wanted to know if there was a way to see the actors, etc from there and so I was wondering if there was a way to have a uniform hyperlink for all of the movies that would search wikipedia or imdb for the words that were in the hyperlink. This way he could just copy paste the same hyperlink to any new movies.

It woudl be great if there were a tool I could download that would allow him to highlight then right click>search wikipedia or imdb that would work in Word. I searched for something like this but they all seemed to be plugins for firefox or for seaches already made from a browser...

Hello there,

I've one issue with MS Access forms. So, let me explain a bit this problem to you guys and hope you lads can help me one way or another.

Ok, so I've created a MS Access form wheres about 15 different object fields that are connected to one table. Next thing is, that I try to make one of those fields a some kind of search field, so when I type to that field some number like "2", it suppose to fill automatically all other fields as well. By the way, that "2" is unique number and every single data record have different number combination, but that isn't a primary key though.

Should I use queries/macros/visual basic code or what?

Any further questions etc. you want to know, please feel free to ask.

Cheers, IP

Yes, I see this at work fairly frequently. First off, if it's up, close the Office toolbar. Then with one of the Office apps open (Word, Outlook, whatever) click on Help at the top and then Detect And Repair. You'll need the Office cd's for it, but it should repair the installer issue.

Hope it helps.

It doesn't show up in add/remove programs, I can't find any files on the harddrive relating to it, and even if i 'uncheck' the toolbar to hide it, it's always there the next time I load up IE! It won't go away!

I recently uninstalled the original shareware but it's still there! It's a blue toolbar with a "search" field and it seems to be from the site However the site gives no indication of this toolbar or how to deal with it.

It's really getting on my nerves!! Anyone?

If that doesn't help perhaps it's listed in the startup.
Click Start -> Execute... and type msconfig, then check the last tab about system start for strange entries.
That helped me a while ago with a bootup problem which could not possibly related to that program in startup.

Hi all, i am trying to get a simple batch file to find the path to a certain file, which may vary, but the file name remains the same inside different folders.. would this be possible using batch or would there be a way to do it using a different method?

Also would it be possible to take the path to this file and set it as a variable for use in a DIFFERENT batch file, i have setx in system32 to set a new environment variable if i can get the filepath to be set from there..

anyone needs any more information please ask but any help would be appreciated.

A:Search for file/folder using batch

Probably need to full description of what you want to do - maybe a batch file is not the best answer.

For simple example, you could try a batch file containing the command

DIR C:\%1 /s > pathout.txt

Then %1 is a variable, so you would use the batch file as : findfile name_of_a_file where you substitue the name of the file you are searching for each time you use the batch file. The DIR command lists all the files of that name (and wild card could be used just as easily), with the /S switch causing a recursive search through subdirectories, starting at C:\ The redirection parameter causes the ourput of the DIR command to be output to a text file called pathout.txt.

If you examine pathout.txt it contains a set of paths and files found in the format

Directory of C:\mydocu~1\personal

where (because this is a surviving Dos program), the pathname is stated in the old Dos 8.3 layout. You see what I mean by 'not the best answer' ? Then the path(s) could be extracted by, for example, a simple basic program which in turn could actually build, or create the actual paths for use in a different batch file.

There are umpteen freeware programs from the days of yore capable of doing the same thing as DIR in a million different ways, but sticking to just Windows XP, the Dir command works as described, the ATTRIB command (found in c:\windows\system32) can do much the same thing but outputs full path names without surrounding quote signs.

There may be no reason not to use the straightforward Windows SEARCH process and just copy and past the results into a batch file opened by notepad, but as I say, depends what you want.

I have a problem with the Vista instant search tool.

I just deleted a load of files with Ccleaner, but they still show up on the search tool.
I try to delete them from the list but it just says it can't find it (therefore can't delete it), of course it can't because I deleted it.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of these file 'ghosts'

Thanks in advance

A:Items remaining on Vista Search Tool

In case anyone else has had similar problems.....

I found out after extensive searching that 'ghost' entries can be caused by an out of date index, what vista uses to quickly find matches.
To solve the problem you go into Control Panel, seach for indexing, click on indexing options, then go into the 'advanced 'section.

You then click 'Rebuild Index' and leave it for a few hours until it has finished. Then, ghosts are gone and stuff that previously did not show up, does, since it has completedly updated.

My hard disk was about 300gb full at the time, and that took about 2-3 hours, in case you want a time estimate

A:Cannot Access My Computer My Documents Or File Search

I had a similar problem once before but in my case there was a read error on the hard drive that was causing the problem. Same story- I clicked on my computer and it gave some error about Explorer, and I got the same from search etc. just like you. To fix this one you might have to reinstall windows, but I would back up your files first. You might have to slave your hard drive to another computer to do that or move the files off to a USB drive or something. In my case I didn't have another computer to slave the files to, but I did have an external hard drive and a copy of BART PE. I was able to use the file manager program in BART PE to copy and paste all my files onto an external USB drive. Then I bought a new hard drive (because I knew the one in question had read errors on it) and formatted and installed windows on it. If your problem is just caused by a virus you might get away with doing Windows repair with the XP CD, or you might have to repave it (format and reinstall).

This is one I've never seen before.

In a WinXP SP2 environment, if you double-click on a folder, it does not open the folder, but it pulls up the Search for Files or Folders application. The computer does not have one of those fancy mice (nor the software for such) where you can re-program what the clicks do. Everything else I looked at in File and Folder setting, Mouse, etc, is otherwise normal. I'm presently scanning for virii and spyware, but I do wnat to know if anyone else has seen this and what was done to fix it.

Many thanks.

(sidebar search - custom - autosearch settings - select choice from drop down menu for address bar search)

Can anyone please tell me how to get my desired search engine (either MSN search or Google) into the address bar. I guess when I installed yahoo messenger something in the program took over my address bar. I do not want to change my home page.

It still functions - as a search and with actual web addresses. It just doesn't use the search engine I want. (and I don't like using the sidebar Search option)

I have WinXP, IE 6.0

I have tried to do the fixes I found in past posts on the subject, but still get the ///?%20cats.

I want to not be refreshed to a new search page if I incorrectly enter a url. What is the fix to just get a whoops, so you can just change the address instead of retyping it over again?

I would advise you to use IE only for Windows updates.

Are you using NAV by any chance? Norton has a feature that scans floppy and it is set ON by default.
Could also be some other utility doing similar scan. Might want to check the settings of any system utilities running in the background for such a feature.

Any help?

A:How to turn off auto run/search

From Powerdesk Pro 5:
To control the drives that display in the drive bar: Go to OptionsàPreferences. Click the Drives tab.By default, all drives are checked. Uncheck the box next to the drive letter(s) you don?t want displayed. You can also use this to specify what categories of drives you want displayed. If you don?t want, say, removable drives to appear, uncheck that box.Drives that are not checked will not display in the drivebar or the tree list. This doesn?t delete the drive, or any files on it. To have the drive reappear in PowerDesk, just recheck the box.If you have a lot of network drives mapped on your system, or have really small partitions, the drivebar may cut off the last few drive letters. To display the items in the drivebar on multiple rows:

A:Search not working on my Windows 7 (professional) PC -- how to fix?

Thank you for that link.  Yes, I did go to that link before.  What I did end up doing was to go ahead and delete all the subfolders in the FolderTypes Folder in regedit.  Then I went to control panel to Indexing Options, I went to the advanced
button then to the File Types tab and added a few more extensions, then I clicked on rebuild on the Index tab.  I had to wait several hours to make sure all the indexes were rebuilt.  Then I restarted my workstation.  Now the search is working
correctly again.

You may be able to "Roll Back" to Windows 7 and save some important files if they are still intact. You should always back up important files especially moving from one OS to another. A "clean" install of Windows 10 works best...

When I open Windows Explorer (Windows 8.1) the search box on upper-right corner doesn't work in the Google drive folder. It works on all other folders. That is: when I enter the name of a file inside this folder, the search returns "0 items" (usually, just typing the first characters of a file starts churning out results).
I've tried rebuilding the index and making sure that folder isn't excluded in the indexing, to no avail.

A:Windows explorer Search doesn't work for Google drive folder

I believe that is due to the Google Drive being non-local, ie: not on the PC, but on in the Google cloud.

I just discovered a folder by the name of Searches. It contains 3 sub-folders: Everywhere, Indexed Locations, and Microsoft OneNote. The first 2 contain a HUGE number of files, and the same files are in each. The OneNote folder is empty.

From the title of the folder, I guess this is all the searches I've ever run on this machine using Windows search. Why do the first 2 subfolders contain the same files, and why does Windows retain these files? I'd like to delete them. Will that upset Windows?

Was your SSD drive shown in the list of "safely remove" hardware?
You may have accidentally selected your OS drive during the removal process.
Disconnect the SSD and boot, shut down, then reconnect the SSD, reboot, hopefully it will be shown in the list again.
