Q: Internet Locks Up Computer (nonBSOD) need hard boot/Cannot install Firewall or AntiVirus/New Program self Installed/Email was C...

My Computer has Windows XP Professional- Edition version Service Pack I use the Windows Firewall and Avira AntiVirus About a month and a half to two months back my computer began periodically freezing up not BSOD but just freezing and Ctrl Alt Del would not still does not work to shut it off so I have to hardboot with the button it to shut it off This would does happen repeatedly every night while on the internet however never during an online game session only while surfing the Internet Installed/Email hard Firewall (nonBSOD) Up Computer install Internet self was Program AntiVirus/New C... boot/Cannot or Locks need Not long after that my yahoo email was compromised where I started receiving email back from my contacts saying they think I had a virus because I had sent a blank message with a link to some drug site but there was nothing in my sent folder After this happened I removed all my contacts from my address book so this wouldn t happen again and changed my password to my email account I checked my Avira for updates and do a scan which I do weekly manually figuring I may have a Internet Locks Up Computer (nonBSOD) need hard boot/Cannot install Firewall or AntiVirus/New Program self Installed/Email was C... virus and realized that despite this being set to automatic start up when I turn on the computer it was disabled and could not be turned back on via the Avira control panel or services tab in the windows control panel I then got a message the file was corrupt so I uninstalled and reinstalled it after hours of trying because my computer Internet Locks Up Computer (nonBSOD) need hard boot/Cannot install Firewall or AntiVirus/New Program self Installed/Email was C... would lock and it would freeze mid way through the Internet Locks Up Computer (nonBSOD) need hard boot/Cannot install Firewall or AntiVirus/New Program self Installed/Email was C... scan and lock up While trying to look up the problems I was am having on line I was still getting the non-BSOD freezing issue and having to hard boot It was suggested to me that I stop using Internet Explorer and switch to Google Chrome which was fine for about three days now I have the same issue with Chrome So I thought maybe try to get a different firewall since I have never once received a pop up message or warning maybe it isn t working Well my computer won t let me download or install any other firewall program I have been able to download and save the files to desktop while in safe mode with networking but they refuse to be installed My non-techie husband has since tried to use some tools SuperAntiSpyware Malwarebytes Spybot Search and Destroy and no spyware is picked up but these can only be run in safe mode while unplugged from the internet or they freeze mid scan also We were able to get CC Cleaner installed but it also freezes through the scan so is useless I still cannot download any type of new anti-virus or firewall software and my computer is still periodically locking up where I have to hard boot Most recently a new program installed itself on my computer that I did not ask for Windows PowerShell I have no idea what it is or where it came from but I have automatic updates turned off so nothing should be downloading itself Also getting second by second strange errors and information updates in the Event Log Applications is giving LoadPerf Event System VSS MSDTC and security center notifications and System is giving DCOM Service Control Manager Event Log Dhcp Tcpip and IPses errors and notifications My security viewer is full of Users logon logoff and system event and account logon when I m already on the computer Please advise I think there is a bad virus and the constant freezing of my computer while online is driving me mad TY for any advice Ann

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just installed Window 7 professional in place of Windows 7 Ultimate RC to which I subscribed. I was not pleased to do a clean install as opposed to an upgrade and was not informed about it.

When I reinstalled Office 2007, my outlook does not work, although exchange on the web works. I get the following error message:

There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default programs control panel

Louis,This issue may occur if the Outlook registry key is corrupted. When other programs try to use the Outlook Simple MAPI interface, they cannot retrieve the required information from the registry. You must first remove the corrupted Outlook registry key, and then perform a Detect and Repair operation to have Outlook rebuild the key. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
In Registry Editor, locate the following subkey in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail\Microsoft Outlook
Select the subkey, and then press DELETE.
Click Yes.
Quit Registry Editor.
Start Outlook.
On the Help menu, click Office Diagnostics.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the repair.

Important: Above section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

I recently installed Kaspersky PURE Total Security on one of my computers. I'd go to the Security & Malware Removal section, but this is not a malware problem, it's a software problem.

Anyway, the computer I installed it on doesn't have a fast enough CPU, or enough ram to run it. So it won't finish booting. It goes through all of the early boot stuff, like Post and CMOS, and but after the Windows XP logo, I just get a black screen with the cursor. The cursor can be moved, but the Welcome screen never loads.

If I can get to System Restore, I can get to a point where Kaspersky hasn't installed any startup processes or anything, then I can uninstall it. Any ideas on how I can do that?

A:I've installed a program that I don't have the minimum specs for, computer won't boot

If you can boot into safemode it won't load Kaspersky and you'll be able to delete it.

I've been using Norton Internet Security 2004 for quite some time. I'm thinking of switching to a different protection software.

Here are my questions:
I have a router and I've read before that you can use that as a hardware firewall. How reliable is it?
Is the Windows Firewall good enough? Can I use the Windows Firewall and router firewall at the same time for added protection?
I have windows anti-spyware, is it a good enough anti-spyware program?

I would appreciate it if you can recommend me an anti-virus program and firewall that are free and reliable.

I'm currently using Zone Alarm, and many people have laughed when i say i use this as my anti virus and firewall software

i was just wondering which is the best [money not an issue] package to get

Thanks in advance

A:Best Antivirus/Firewall program please?

Zone Alarm is a great firewall Never used it as AV protection though.
I prefer AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 (it's free)

My internet connection keeps dropping out and I think it may either be the firewall or the Kaspersky antivirus program. If I have a AV program do I need to also have the firewall on? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

A:Do I need both firewall AND my antivirus program?

Yes, either AV or firewall can cause connection problems, I have just read today, that latest update prevented users with KAV to connect to steam, maybe it is related. Try to temporarily disable AV and test the connection a bit, then try to disable firewall, then both and see the outcome, once you find the culprit, you can focus on finding the solution.

If you have a router, a firewall may not be as much needed, but it is still recommended.
You can always keep using the inbuilt Windows Firewall with a better GUI, like GlassWire.

A:Best Antivirus + Firewall Program

Best anti Virus ----- The one you should be using Take your pick Pay for it or get a freebie You should not be without it . Update regularly and scan daily .

Firewall use the one built in to XP or get Zone Alarm Anything is better than nothing If you have XP SP2 you have a good firewall available there as well

Panda is an excellent priogram .

Hi.  I am a computer novice.  In the past I have been infected with a rootkit trojan.  I have been using Avast.  I am not sure that is the best software/firewall program available.  Their technical assistance has been horrible and has caused my computer to have more problems that I started out with.  I have a neighbor that has come over to solve several issues with my computer and I am now up and running ok now.  I have a quadriplegic son on life support and need the advice of computer experts.

WHAT IS THE TOP RATED ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM AND WHAT IS THE TOP FIREWALL PROGRAM?  I AM RUNNING MALWAREBYTES AND MALWAREBYTES ANTI-ROOTKIT UTILITY.  MY NEIGHBOR ALSO INSTALLED SPYBOT AND GLARY UTILITIES.

INSTEAD OF THE AVAST ANTISPYWARE AND FIREWALL DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS AS TO A BETTER SOFTWARE PROGRAM?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.
NANCY

A:WHAT IS THE TOP RATED ANTIVIRUS/FIREWALL PROGRAM?

You ask a common question for which you will receive varying opinions and recommendations. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your needs. Please read:Choosing an Anti-Virus ProgramSANS Institute Choosing Your Anti-virus SoftwareSame applies to Firewall...see Choosing a FirewallBTW, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not an anti-virus program nor should it be used as a replacement. Malwarebytes does not act as a real-time protection scanner for every file like anti-virus software so it is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute. The following quote is a statement from the Malwarebytes Team.Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not meant to be a replacement for antivirus software. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a complementary but essential program which detects and removes zero-day malware and "Malware in the Wild". This includes malicious programs and files, such as viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and rogue applications that many antivirus programs do not detect or cannot fully remove. It is important to note that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware works well and should run alongside antivirus software without conflicts. In some rare instances, exclusions may need to be set for your specific antivirus product to achieve the best possible system performance.Larry TateProduct SupportThus, you need both an anti-virus and an anti-malware program...together they provide the most comprehensive protection.See Supplementing your Anti-Virus Program with Anti-Malware Tools.I also recommend using SpywareBlaster and WinPatrol.

I am in the process of setting up our church's PC with WinXP Home. This computer will be used frequently by at least 3 people, each having their own logon. I need a quality integrated AntiVirus, Spyware and Firewall program which, once set up, will function with minimal user intervention, not be disk intensive, and be reasonably priced. Any recommendations?

A:Your Security Cocktail - Firewall + AntiVirus + AntiSpyware program combination you use!

If you reinstalled Z/A suite, then be certain you do NOT have two Anti-viruses applications providing real time protection; this can cause sluggishness in operating as well as serious conflicts. One possible option would be to install only the Z/A firewall, Avira, and then two anti-spyware applications of your choice (for example, Superantispyware). Cheers,John

I have mcafee agent installed on my laptop. Does this mean I have an antivirus program installed on my laptop. I ask because I used to have avira and then avg installed and they were programs that made it obvious that they were able to scan for viruses, that they could monitor my browser for websites that could download viruses etc. McAfee only has an icon near my battery indicator in the bottom right hand side of the screen which I can right click to update but it doesn't appear to be doing much else compared with all the notifications that avira and avg would give me. Any help would be appreciated.

A:is mcafee agent installed on my laptop an antivirus program?

I'm guessing it's this item:http://tinyurl.com/pz6cghbPersonally I dislike "anything" being installed on "any" computer without the knowledge and consent of the user/owner etc... And even more when it presumes I am happy to have it "reporting back" at intervals - without my say so...As you do not appear to be using McAfee (you're using another anti-virus util) I'd remove the McAfee item. Details on how to to do that can be found here:https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/ind...and if the above isn't any help... then perhaps rerun the google trawl I have just done- using the string (search words):< mcafee agent uninstall > (no < > )or < mcafee agent removal tool > *(again no < >)as there are assorted hits about it... The second trawl/string may be more direct I suspect.message edited by trvlr

I have a couple Windows 2000 servers hosting some web services and mail list servers and email server software. They are directly connected to a Cisco 800 series router with simple NAT but I have had terrible luck keeping them really secure. I have used CA Antivirus for a couple years and Zone Alarm but now Zone Alarm has stopped working well with the 2000 server (it crashes all the time and the True Vector service will not run properly) and I am wondering what the best idea for a decent software firewall and antivirus might be to protect these servers. I dont have a ton of $ for these things either. The servers have seperate external IP addresses as well.
Thanks,
J5

Hi

Use this program to uninstall all instances of ESET from your computer, then try again

Please download AppRemover and save it to your desktop.Double click on AppRemover.exe to run it.
Uncheck "Enable anonymous usage statistics. No personal data will be recorded."
Click on the Next button.
Click on " Remove Security Application" or " Clean Up a Failed Uninstall" depending on what you want to do. (you want the failed uninstall)
Click on the Next button.
A scan begins, please wait. Once done, click on the Next button.
Now you should have a list of your installed programs, choose the one you want to remove and click on the Next button.
Follow the last step and reboot if asked to do so.
If you still feel you are infected, follow the instructions in the First Steps topic and post the logs:

Hello I thought my issues were solved locks - Computer hard but I was wrong Before I tell what the problem is here are the specs CPU Intel I GPU Computer hard locks - EVGA GTX Memory x gb Kingston Hyperx mhz Mobo Asus P P PRO Power Supply FSP Aurum Gold Audio Onboard My computer freezes during gaming when iddle in Windows when installing Windows and even inside BIOS latest version It can happen times in minutes or once every hours This computer is months old and I believe after - months the freezing started At start it would freeze maybe once ever days or so Then it started freezing almost daily and now it freezes - times a day - So far I've tried switching my GTX for other weaker cards and the freezing continued - Then I tried both sticks of RAM separately and on different slots I even tried another monitor as I had visual problems because of a bad HDMI cable in the past This also did not work Also my memory is set to run at a lower frequency and voltage mhz v This is automatically set by the mobo altough the memory has a XMP profile to run at mhz and V Both configurations did not work - I cleaned my entire case and all it's components of dust barely had any and reseated every component and replugged every cable twice - I've run several minutes sessions of furmark This did not cause any artifacts or shutdowns - I've run memtest boot version several times I've seen at least passes so far altough not sequential and not a single error - I've run Prime for over hours This did return a error on one of the workers saying quot rounding was expected less than quot The error occurred after hours - I've run CHKDSK and it did not return a single bad sector - In any of the previous steps my computer did freeze at least once but the pattern makes me believe the following - It is not memory because memtest did not return a single error after or so passes Also if it was memory it would probably be a single stick of it and not both of them at the same time - It is not the power supply because my system would most likely shutdown or restart and my motherboard would also most likely beep telling my there is not enough power Additionally this is a very good power supply and I've monitored the voltages and they are all correct with barely any percentage of fluctuation - It is not the GPU Running furmark for several sessions without artifacts or shutdowns and also trying different GPUs on different slots did not seize the freezing - It is not temperature The case is very well ventilated and the temps of every component is below the average reported by the manufacturers - It is not software I had most recent drivers for everything inside my computer and it still froze Stock drivers that were running fine during the first months of my PC also did not work Reinstalling Windows did not work The biggest proof though is that it froze inside BIOS - It is not the Hard Disk The proof is that it froze inside BIOS with the HD cables unplugged I believe the issue is either the motherboard or the CPU most likely the first I don't think there is anything else to do as I have no spare mobo or CPU to test I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard but before that I wanted to know what is everyone's opinion about this and if there is something else that can solve the problem Thank you

A:Computer hard locks -

Well, RAM would have been my first guess, but you seem to have covered that pretty well. I would lean more towards the motherboard before the processor, I can't remember the last time I had a problem with an Intel processor. I have had many ASUS mobo problems recently, a lot of the symptoms that you report, in addition to BIOS being screwed up (the screen is askew when in BIOS, totally strange, and ASUS unsuccessfully tried to repair it, hellooooo Intel Motherboard).

A:Can't Install Any Antivirus, Firewall And Online Virus Scan

Hello and welcome to BCWe apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. We aim to provide the valuable service known to come from BC to every member we can, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware. Thanks and again sorry for the delay. Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.alternate download siteDSS will do the following:Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.Close all applications and windows.Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
malicious. When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:main.txt <- this one will be maximizedextra.txt <- this one will be minimizedIf not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful. If you already preformed the steps above We still need to see the current state of the machine fresh scan and logs are still necessaryclick on Start, click on Run copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /configThis will open up DSS configuration click on Check Allclick ScanDSS will now run again when finishedPlease post back both logs that open in notepadMain txt and extra txtNextPlease do a scan with Kaspersky Online ScannerNote: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs. The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files. After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My ComputerThis will start the program and scan your system. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.Once the scan is complete, click on View scan reportNow, click on the Save Report as button.Save the file to your desktop.Copy and paste that information in your next post.

- My anti-virus cum security (ESET) has a firewall.
- I want set the Internet connection LAN setting for auto detection for proxy - so that Co's websites will open automatically and whenever anybody enters any URL other than Co's it will ask for id & password.
----- I am not sure but may be FIREWALL OF ANTIVIRUS & SECURITY IS CREATING PROBLEM to automatically detect internet proxy settings.
How could I set the firewall to resolve the problem?

Hello, yesterday I uninstalled norton antivirus that came with the computer because it expired, when it finished uninstalling I did not restart the computer, and installed avg. Since then the internet has been blocked, I tried restoring the pc to the day before, but it was still blocked. I removed the avg and the problem is still there. Windows firewall isn't working either, so I don't know where the problem is.

I hope someone can help me with this problem. thanks.

A:Firewall/antivirus blocking internet connection

hi you need the norton removal tool specific to your copy and possibly the code

My computer is a HP slate 500, with 2gb memory, 128gb ssd drive running windows 7 pro. A few days ago my computer began to freeze for no apparent reason. I ran chkdsk/f and it fixed a few things, but the freeze would continue. I ran a full scan of malwarebytes and windows defender, neither showed anything. Last night I tried to run sfc / scannow twice both times the computer froze. The first time it was a 50% the second at 81%. I tried again today and it got to 87% and the screen went black. I tried a system restore point, but that failed. I tried restore from system image and it failed. Tried startup repair three times all failed. I tried system repair disk it also failed. I tried to do a clean install with the win7 pro disk that came with my computer and it locks up at the installing point. Any advice?

A:Computer locks up on clean install of win 7 pro.

It sounds like there may be a hardware issue. Perhaps a failing memory module, motherboard, etc. One of the Forum members prepared these troubleshooting guides. They might help isolate the problem if you can boot your machine (perhaps in Safe Mode).

Installed program, now no boot into Windows, Help needed ASAP

I just installed this a few minutes ago, and then restarted my win7 64bit computer.

http://lifehacker.com/5561303/solut...peed-up-your-system-boot-fix-system-slowdowns

When the computer started to boot up, it got up to the boot page where the colorful spheres combine to for the microsoft symbol. After a few more seconds, I BSOD and get STOP: 0x0000001E. This is the only code that may seem to help.

Update: I got this after one another restart (total of 5 restarts, just hoping it may work)
An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

I have finals this week and the computer I'm using now sucks. Please help.

I have a Lenovo P Touch running Windows Hello first time post When conducting normal computer activities like booting connecting to a network surfing the web etc my computer will completely lock up sometimes for hours on end up/reboots - hard drive? Computer randomly be locks could the it Sometimes it will fail to boot saying something to the effect of quot checked media - failed quot or it will stick on the Lenovo load screen indefinitely These problems first began after upgrading to Windows though this is likely a coincidence I Computer randomly locks up/reboots - could it be the hard drive? reset the system back to Windows which solved the issues temporarily though they came back after about a week Thinking I may have had a virus I downloaded MalwareBytes and ran a scan and nothing came up I also ran Norton Power eraser and again no issues Turning next to the Computer randomly locks up/reboots - could it be the hard drive? hard drive I downloaded Seatools for Computer randomly locks up/reboots - could it be the hard drive? Windows The computer will sometimes fail the SMART diagnostic usually fail the Short Diagnostic Self Test and always fail the Short Generic test always with the code C AC A I know this means that the diagnostic couldn t find the drive s serial number but I have no idea what that actually means Is the hard drive failing or does the problem lie elsewhere Thank you in advance nbsp

A:Computer randomly locks up/reboots - could it be the hard drive?

Hello, a healthy drive will never fail any of these diagnostics. So it looks like you found your culprit.
Backup your data asap and replace the drive. Good excuse for moving to an SSD? Just saying...
Good luck and best regards

Hi everyone

for the last 2 weeks or so my computer has been locking up and freezing with the data light on the computer to go into a solid state of red.

i thought i had fixed it by trying a few other solutions i had found here on the net such as....

1. re-applying thermal paste to CPU
2. removing build up of dust
3. checking ALL connections
4. Re-installing windows
5. checking hard drive for bad sectors (which it found and fixed)

im running...
windows 7 32bit
3gb RAM
ATI HD6870
1 320GB western digital HDD
1 500GB western digital HDD ( which i think is causing the problems but its only a year old and shouldnt be failing now).

so yeaa..thats my problem..reall starting to anger me and im considering building a completley new system but this ones only a year and a half old :/ any help from you guys would be much apriciated

Thanks
Daniel.

A:Hard drive light goes solid red and computer locks up...

It does sound as though the hard drive has failed or is not far off it.

I may be wrong, but I think Western Digital have a five-year no-quibble guarantee on their hard drives so it'll pay you to check with them.

A hard drive can fail at any time so I think you've just been unlucky.

You should try and get any important data off the drive as soon as possible.

Hello,

We are experiencing problem where Norton/Symantec antivirus (any version) can not be uninstalled using uninstall utilities from the SYmantec. These are the mostly XP machines where there were some infection or spyware caused program either not get definitions or currupt.

After manually uninstalling by deleting files and registry entries, we found that antivirus program can not be installed. It gives error message that installation could be completed, due to either could not run liveupdate or could not start av services.

Any idea or thought would be highly appreciated.

Thank you,

I'm getting a brand new toy! Toshiba Satellite L655-S5114 NoteBook Intel Core i5 460M with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Comes with Norton Internet Security? 2011 (free 30-day trial), after which one must pay. Which free antivirus, firewall, and other privacy/security programs do you recommend? Much thanks in advance for your advice!

A:New computer -- advice on antivirus / firewall etc

Choosing a security toolkit with anti-virus, firewall and anti-malware programs is a matter of personal preference, your technical ability and experience, features offered, user friendliness, ease of updating (and upgrading to new program release), ease of installation/removal, available technical support from the vendor and price. Other factors to consider include detection rates and methods, scanning engine effectiveness, how often virus definitions are updated, the amount of resources the program utilizes, how it may affect system performance and what will work best for your system. A particular anti-virus that works well for one person may not work as well for another. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your use and your system. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone. For more specific information to consider, please read Choosing Your Anti-virus Software. No single product is 100% foolproof and can prevent, detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security community is in a constant state of change as new infections appear. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes malware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Thus, a multi-layered defense using several anti-spyware products (including an effective firewall) to supplement your anti-virus combined with common sense, safe computing and safe surfing habits provides the most complete protection.Important Tip: Always remember that security begins with personal responsibility. As a general rule, using more than one anti-spyware program like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SuperAntispyware, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, Spyware Terminator, etc. will not conflict with each other or your anti-virus if using only one of them for real-time protection and others as stand-alone scanners. In fact, doing so increases your protection coverage without causing the same kind of conflicts or affecting the stability of your system that can occur when using more than one anti-virus. The overlap of protection from using different signature databases will aid in detection and removal of more threats when scanning your system for malware. However, competing tools may provide redundant alerts which can be annoying and/or confusing as a result of the overlap in protection. If using multiple real-time resident shields (TeaTimer, Ad-Watch, MBAM Protection Module, Spyware Terminator Shields, etc.) together at the same time, there can be conflicts when each application tries to compete for resources and exclusive rights to perform an action. They may identify the activity of each other as suspicious and produce alerts. Further, your anti-virus may detect suspicious activity while these programs are scanning (reading) files, especially if it uses a heuristic scanning engine, regardless if they are running in real-time or on demand. The anti-virus may even detect as threats, any malware removed by these programs and placed into quarantined areas. This can lead to a repetitive cycle of endless alerts or false alarms that continually warn a threat has been found if the contents of the quarantine folder are not removed before beginning a new security scan.Keep in mind that you can overkill a system with resource heavy security programs that will slow down performance. Sometimes you just have to experiment to get the right combination for your particular system. Use trustworthy security tools like:Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: How to scan and remove malware from your computerSUPERAntiSpyware: How to use to scan and remove malware from your computerI recommend taking advantage of the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Pro) Protection Module in the full version which uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system and prov... Had a disk issue with my system, took to a local repairman, he installed something that the system boots into. My system will not boot to safe, bios or any other mode. I can get into safe mode via msconfig.

The real issue I am trying to fix is iTunes is not working, says it has no program associated with it. wanted to get into safe mode with command prompt to run assoc.exe=exefile Any suggestions of wait to repairman to open and have him help me uninstall what ever software he installed???

A:Repair tech installed a boot program

Welcome Walkingbird
A little more information will help us help you.
HP desktop model number will come in handy.
Can you describe what the program it boots into says? Such as does it say "recovery" or does it have a logo or name?
I take it the f8 key does not take you to the boot choice screen but does the f8 do anything?

It is difficult to say what to do without knowing what program we are dealing with. I would also ask you to make sure there are no cd's or dvd's in the drives prior to boot. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a repair or scanning disk left in the drive by repair personnel cause boot issues.

I'm unsure if this is a virus or some sort of problem with parts of my computer. My pc is locking up at random intervals and requires a hard reboot. Hi everyone

for the last 2 days my computer has been locking up and freezing with the data light on the computer to go into a solid state .
as for the locking up thing i mean it completley locks..mouse doesent move.. CTRL ALT DEL does nothing..only thing i can do is hit the power button untill it shuts off. I'v tried leaving it but the computer was still the same.

im running...
Hp pavilion desktop
windows 7 64bit
4gb RAM
Nvidia Geforce GT 130
500GB samsung HDD ( which i think is causing the problems )

And also i didn't mention to one thing that when I unplug the wire of Pc my BIOS didn't recognize the time and date , I have to change it myself (Not always) just when I unplug the wire .

so please help me with that im getting mad on that

A:Hard drive light goes solid and computer locks up and freeze

You seem to have a couple of issues.

Quote:
And also i didn't mention to one thing that when I unplug the wire of Pc my BIOS didn't recognize the time and date , I have to change it myself (Not always) just when I unplug the wire .

This happens when the CMOS battery is unable to keep enough charge, so when you unplug the PSU power source
+5V Standby Power also drops and clears your CMOS (BIOS).

Hard Hangs are usually hardware related .
I would start by taking a closer look at the HDD indeed as it is the first culprit that comes to mind.

Testing the HDD:
Perform a Disk Check | Disk Check
Then Post the results following | THIS METHOD
Download SeaTools for Windows if you don't want to use a CD to test the HDD you can use YUMI – Multiboot USB Creator to create a bootable USB (instructions are found at the bottom of both pages).

A salesman for us just installed McAfee Personal Firewall on his laptop. He says that shortly after this, his laptop no longer allows him to Shut Down or Log Off. It simply does nothing when he clicks on either of those. (Running XP Home)

He is also asking how to tell the software to configure for programs itself, rather than giving him popups asking if it should allow access to the internet.
Everyone here is using either ZoneAlarm or Norton, so I can't help him.

Does anyone know solutions to either of these? Thank you.

Looking for a new email program for Win 7 home premium. I think I want program installed on new install rather than a web based version(I'm not sure about Outlook.com). Any recommendations? Would be nice to work with 32 & 64 bit but not necessary.
Maybe Thunderbird?
Install windows mail from Vista that I have running?
Anything better(For free)
Thanks

A:Which email program, new install

When I was running on free I used Thunderbird at home and Windows Mail on my laptop. Then I went to Outlook(desktop application not outlook.com), it synchronizes with my phone email, calendar and task, I never went back after that.

Most people don't get a mail client application do you really need one?

I have this very annoying pop up that is trying ot highlight these problems on my system, but i know its a rogue virus that is trying ot get me to buy their antivirus software by pretending to be a legit warning.

I downloaded 'search & destroy' and it did a great job as it found other problems, but this problem keeps popping up and not allowing me to use the internet.

It comes up with other false problems too, and I have been to other sites that say to delete these ceratin files, but I havent got the skills for that, and I dont know where to look or how to delete them.

I am using windows 7 and its a Novateck tablet.

Be grateful if anybody can help with this one.

Cheers

Hello everybody At the beginning of the month my computer began experiencing what I assumed were random lock ups I could have the computer on for about minutes or so at a time before the lock ups occurred The odd thing about these crashes was that they took place one program at a time First my browser would lock up but I could still use my taskbar until I tried to use the start menu or open the clock etc Then my desktop would lock up if Computer locks on defrag drive up and hard chkdsk; suspected failure I tried to use any shortcuts I eventually got frustrated with trying to troubleshoot it and completely reformatted installing XP from scratch Everything was perfectly fine up until I installed Diskeeper and tried to run a defrag on my computer The lock ups occurred once more Because Diskeeper also uses its auto-defragger tool I realized that it was the cause of my lock ups prior to reformatting my drive as well I tried defragging in safe mode using a different defragging software and ran chkdsk In all cases my computer froze with chkdsk consistently locking up on phase at I suspect that my hard drives I have two GB WD Raptors in a RAID array maybe failing or at least one of them but it s hard to tell outside this defragging chkdsk issue my Computer locks up on defrag and chkdsk; suspected hard drive failure computer runs flawlessly though I have noticed the slightest bit of lag when accessing files and programs lately which could be attributed to the lack of a defrag If one of my hard disks was failing I would expect a much more cumbersome degree of errors like blue screens or disappearing inaccessible files The computer seems fine unless I try to defrag or run chkdsk and I just don t understand it Like I said everything on my computer is nestled on a RAID array of two GB WD Raptor drives on a P N-E SLI motherboard nForce i chipset with Windows XP as my OS The stripe size is kb and my Nvidia RAID controller always lists the array as healthy I ve considered the possibility that my motherboard s RAID controller is failing or somehow damaged but I wouldn t know how to verify this My computer with this hardware and using Diskeeper as my primary defragging software has ran flawlessly up to this point about years I would love to save myself from spending - on a replacement hard drive so any and all help that can be contributed would be much appreciated If there is any other information required please let me know Thanks in advance nbsp

I recently changed some of my hardware since when nearly every time I connect to the Internet dial up the whole system freezes I can launch no program from the desk top icons and all icons on the task bar are also dead Even Ctrl Alt Del does nothing Sometimes the quot Connected quot icon simply disappears However if I launch programs before dialling up these will run once connected but only very slowly Eventually after anywhere between and minutes the system usually unlocks and returns to normal However sometimes only a hard reset will clear the problem There is virtually no activity being Computer Internet. A:Computer Locks Up When Connecting To The Internet.

(I thought I had posted this query already, but , as a newbie, I must have pressed the wrong button. Sorry if it appears twice!)Problem. The computer "locks" when I connect to the Internet, when nothing will run and no program can be opened - including Ctrl/Alt/Del. This does not happen every time, but, on average, about three times in four. Sometimes it will unfreeze after anything from 2 to 10 minutes, but at other times a hard reset is necessary.Background.New computer installed in December 2006 and the problem surfaced almost immediately.Intel Pentium 4CPU 3.06 Ghz504 Mb Ram80 Gb hard disc (69 Gb free)DVD drive **CD drive **Printer **Scanner **Wireless keyboard and mouse.Internet connection is by dial up (56 modem ** but seldom achieve more than 28).(** transferred from previous machine) Broadband not available. No problem with my previous computer of similar specification.Running Widos XP Home Edition with SP2.The system locks completely, with no activity being shown by Windows task manager (WTM).During the locked situation, no program can be launched from any desk top icon, and the cursor changes to an hour glass or a double arrow when moved to the task bar area, from where again, no program can be launched. When the Internet connection is made, the "Connected" message, above the Connected icon, is often ghosted, so that the icons below can be read. However, if I launch a program while off line (eg Outlook Express or Firefox), these will run, but only painfully slowly. If I click on the Hijack This icon, when in a locked situation, it is recorded in the WTM listing, with no activity, but eventually, will start and produce a report. Then eventually, the system will start to run normally. Sometimes, the Connected icon simply disappears from the Task Bar!I have scanned the system with Spybot, AVG, Avast and Advanced Spyware remover, but found nothing. However, fairly early on I did detect the Trojan "asrupdate", and removed this with Killbox. I have also tried deleting a number of programs, one at a time, but still with no solution to the problem. So here's the HJT log file. Hi there.

I've searched round and round, tried some freeware that didn't do what it says on the tin. Then thought "Tech Support...!"

I was installing Microsoft Webcam software on Vista (LifeCam 1.4) and it hung up part way through the install. Elements of the software are in place (icons on the desktop, when clicked on, work ... to an extent) but it's not right.

Trouble is, it doesn't appear on the add/remove list in order that it be uninstalled .. and I can't reinstall without uninstalling (says the setup.exe).

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers!

How do I do a system restore if I can't get xp to start. It only gets as far as the window that shows when "Windows is starting" except that those words do not come up. It just sits there. I installed a program last night and this has now happened. I do have a "Spotmau" recovery disk. But don't know how to get to restore.

So I finally got a new motherboard to boot, but got a Stop 0x0000007B error. I booted from the XP CD, and after attempting to install (first option) or recover(second option), the CD says that it cannot find any "hard disk drives installed.." I made sure the HD was connected, and the same thing happens, so I find this odd. The IDE hard drive worked fine on the old motherboard until that motherboard died. The HD is connected with the same cable as the the CD drive.

After experiencing precipitously slowing performance of my MSN email program on a WinXP Home machine (yes, with SP2), I attempted to re-install MSN premium from CD. Notta. Attempted to uninstall previously installed program and came up with an error message that indicated I could not proceed. I have spent numerous hours online and on the phone to no avail. I suspect some kind of setting on xp that is interfering with both installation and uninstallation.
Any similar experiences out there?? Any thoughts or suggestions? MSN Explorer works fine, it is just the MSN premium email program that is the problem.
Thanks

A:My computer badly locks up when I'm browsing on the internet.

I don't know what your tech shop had you run in order to stress test it. But one of the most popular apps out there is freeware and will get right to the problem if one exists with your CPU or memory or even heat.

http://mersenne.org/freesoft.htm
Download PRIME95

There are a couple others people will suggest. But one you install this, you want to run "Torture Test" and use the default blend setting.

Now as far as locking up during browsing. I've only had one experience with this. To my knowledge, it was cleared up with a driver update for the NIC (Network Card)

There are also tweaks that some shops do to try to squeeze more juice out of the system but have drawbacks sometimes. If I think of internet, I think of the Internet explorer maximum connections tweak. That tweak takes the maximum simultaneous connections from your browser to 10. I'm not sure what the Firefox default is, but I have a plug in that brings it to 48.

I actually would start with updating the NIC driver. It's the easiest thing to do and causes the least risk. I think it's always nice to have the latest drivers running my machine. But especially if weird things start occurring.

I don't see your system specs so I can't send you a link for your nic. If you are willing to try the above two suggestion, let us know if you get an error from Prime95 and/or if you'd like to try updating your nic driver.

A:INFECTED with Internet Antivirus Program

Hello and welcome. Please tell us which Antivirus and spyware tools installed. Is this an XP system. What firewall is operating? Thanks ...Now run an MBAM scan and post it's log. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

AntiVir Personal Edition Classic 7. It has the highest detection rate of the freebie antiviruses. It does not have a e-mail scanner but that should not be a problem if you configure it for optimum protection. Take off scan boot sectors only. Put everything at the highest option. It uses very low resources but I am not sure if it wil run so you should try it out

I recently installed a new SSD and put my OS on it but every now and then when I boot up it just wont get an internet connection. Once its booted up and I restart Windows though its fine. It doesn't happen everytime but 50% or so I'd say on boot up. I'm thinking its something to do with how fast its booting up now and for some reason my network settings or drivers have not had a chance to load or something and its not getting a handshake with my router. I would appreciate any ideas you awesome guys may have on it. Im running Win7 64bit.

I have a dell Vostro 200 slim tower with 250 gb hard drive, running win7 ultimate 32 bit. I've just put in a 1tb western digital drive. It won't boot past the dell screen. However, if I unplug the keyboard then plug it in, so I get the keyboard error message, plug the keyboard in and press f2 (to get into bios), the drive is shown correctly. In the bios, all the settings appear correct ie boot sequence etc. if I press f1 instead of f2, the pc boots properly and the drive is shown in my computer / disc manager etc.

I have updated the bios but still it won't go past the dell screen. I have re-formatted the drive so it is completely empty but still it won't go past the dell screen.

Any ideas?

Clarification needed:

Was everything OK until you got the 1 TB drive? Why do you mention it?

Are you trying to install on the 250 GB or the 1 TB?

When did the PC last operate OK and what have you done to it since that time?

I assume you have some type of installation disc. Is it OEM, retail, borrowed, burned, or what?

I had to go to westerndigital.com and install lifebuoy 10 for it to recognize all 20 gb as it would only register 6.3gb. So if winxp boots to safe mode what can I do to make it boot normally? I ran msconfig and had it try to boot with just a sys.ini and/or the diagnostic startup.

This is my first encounter with winxp, I was using win 98 previously.

Thanks, Kelly

A:installed Win XP on a new hard drive..won't boot

I think my first post had a very ambiguous question. All I really need to know is what to look for in safe mode to change to make my pc boot normally? I am sure it is something small, but I can't think of it!

Thanks again,
Kelly

I'll start with the usual disclaimer which I'm sure you've heard ad-nauseum I have little-to-no computer knowledge All I've learned has been from this wonderful forum On to my issue HP Pavilion dv - b us laptop For the last year I've been having more and more BSOD's freezes etc and all of the indications pointed towards a failing hard drive I wish I could tell you specifically what the error messages said but I honestly don't won't now Installed hard boot... new drive, remember them exactly I can say that each time I took the diagnostic steps it always reported a problem with the hard drive Usually I was able to get it going again but it continued to happen more and more often Finally it refused to start Win so I figured the hd had given out No big deal hard drives are cheap So Installed new hard drive, now won't boot... I ordered http www ebay com itm TB-Hard-Drive-for-HP-Pavilion-DV - NR-DV - B XX-DV - B US-DV - B NR- hash item d d b g pLcAAMXQBkpSMOM Installed it yesterday Unfortunately I don't have a Win disk came pre-installed but the machine does have the reg key sticker on the bottom Soooo my plan was to install XP the only disk I have to get onto the internet then download Win ISO file onto a flash drive then just boot from that that should work right Anyway put the XP disk in and it appears Installed new hard drive, now won't boot... to load the XP files just fine However just before it wants to start Installed new hard drive, now won't boot... Windows I think - the attached BSOD screen pops up hopefully it's attached In case it doesn't attach it's essentially the usual BSOD and near the bottom it says STOP x E x xF B D xF D EA xF D B C acp sys - Address F B D base at F AD DateStamp d I've been googling STOP errors for days now but I only understand a fraction of what I'm reading I think the acp is important and possibly is referring to a hardware problem memory But honestly I have no idea Hence I once again come before the masters here HELLPPPP And THANX as always Striper

My ex-wife, who is an IT expert, has installed some kind of spy program to my computer. She is getting information that only I would know. I have a new log-on for my aol and she has found this out.

Norton keeps sending me warnings that someone is trying to access my computer.

I have searched my files and can not find a spy program, but she would know how to hide it.

Is there anyway I can find out what it is and remove it from my computer. I have Pest Patrol and have done a search with it and removed what was on the log but I still keep getting the Norton warnings.

Thank you for any help you can give me. Tx

My internet provider has its own internet security system for sale, should I buy it or stick with Norton.
My service provider is called eastlink, their internet security is called Eastlink Internet Security Services.
Has anybody used this before. I am in Northern Ontario, Canada

A:Internet provider has its own antivirus program for sale

I do`t know of any ISP who writes their own Security program. The programs they provided are usually an already written program, Norton, McAfee, etc. with a face lift to make it look like it is from the ISP.

If you already have and are comfortable with Norton then I see no real reason to change. Or at the least wait until your current subscription is about to expire and maybe opt for the free program then.

Well, I created a dual-boot system for Vista - XP, Vista being installed first. The two operating systems seem to be working fine and well with each other, but the internet is not working for the windows XP. The Vista internet is working normally though. When I go onto my XP's Network Connection, it is blank, no Local Area Network what so ever. I really want to use XP because Windows Vista is Microsoft's fail operating thingie.

Help please
