Preferred Solution: No file sharing after modem replacement

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can file sharing be temporarily disabled in windows without affecting any other services. I guess what I am looking for is an "on or off " - switch" without having to disable file sharing the tradional way (rebooting etc). Is there a option? Windows service etc...

I would just really like to know how to turn it off....lets say for 5 minutes or 10 minutes at a time and easily resume all shared folders and services.

I really hope im just not overlooking the obvious!

How do you replace an intergrated modem on a HP pavilion notebook? Thanks.

A:Laptop modem replacement

Hi Roho,

Intergrated means its part of the motherboard. So you would then have to replace the entire motherboard. Its cheaper and easier to just buy a PCMCIA modem and disable the intergrated one.

A friend suspects their modem has been disabled by lightning. How can I determine this, recognize what the modem is, take it out, ground myself etc. milt.

A:[SOLVED] modem replacement

What exactly is happening when trying to access the modem?

The modem would be visible from the rear of the computer, it probably has two telephone connectors, but if it's older, it could have one.

I replaced a faulty Motorola SB5101 with a new SB5101. I use a Netgear router. Everything worked fine initially. After awhile our VPN connection stopped working, then started ...etc. Normal internet access works fine. Is the problem with the modem? the VPN? The computer? Comcast?

We use a IBM ThinPad laptop, XP Pro. This computer connects to the VPN successfully at all other wifi networks that we'v e used.

A:Intermittent VPN conection after modem replacement

Well, you can connect directly to the modem with one computer to test if the modem or Comcast are causing the issue, that will start to narrow it down. Hard to imagine this is the modem if you have normal Internet access, that modem is pretty dumb and doesn't care what kind of traffic goes through.

In Vista, what happens when you enable password protected file sharing over normal file sharing?

I realize it requires credentials but what is changed on the system to require this?

If I enable just File Sharing (and not the password protected option) and have the share/NTFS permissions set for a user, connecting to the share fails as it never prompts for the username/password.

When you turn on password protected sharing you are prompted then for a username/password. What I want to know is what changes on the system to then prompt for credentials?

Same thing in reverse. If I set the 'require password for sharing' and have the group 'Everyone' in the share and NTFS permissions I am still prompted for credentials if I connect.

can anyone recommend a software to share my internet connection with a better control about who uses it, how much bandwidth they get, etc?
I was using WinGate till now, but while it worked great with my WinXP 32, it does not work with my Vista x64, cause it's neither 64bit compatible, nor is it vista compatible...
I need to be able to set up rules like 10.11.*.* is not allowed to use my connection but some chosen ips can, the person with the netbios name XXX only can use 10% off the available speed, etc... If anyone got any tips at all (except for "change to linux" which i hear quite often *g*) I would be really grateful

I need to buy an ARRIS TM502G and quite paying the ridiculous rental fee per month to Comcast. I just want to know for certain that the one I buy will work. So, the actual numbers on the modem I now rent say TM502G/CT-8. Does the "CT-8" mean I must find one with CT-8, or will it work since it's the same otherwise?

Hi all,

I have a wireless network set up in my house and I want to share some of the folders on my computer so that other family members can listen to my music etc. When I click to turn Network Discovery on, and click apply, it just stays off, same goes for File Sharing.
When I try to turn public folder sharing on, after I click apply I get an error message saying "incorrect function". I have shared stuff on my work network so I'm not sure what's wrong here.

Hi all,

I have a client who would like 2 computers already connected to a router for a shared DSL connection to be able to share files. My problem is this: This is an office and the 2 computers are quite a distance from each other. I am trying to figure out the most cost effective and efficient way to link these two together for enabling file sharing? What kind of cables would I need and what are the steps I should take on each PC to set them up properly? They are both fairly new Dell computers with Windows XP. (I'm thinking Pro edition)

Please help me with this. Detailed steps and information would be much appreciated. My usual method of NIC cards and connecting cables just won't work here. I'm puzzled what the best way would be. Thank you so much in advance for your reply!

A:New Bell 1000 wifi modem replacement, causes atapi 11 errors??

You were almost right about ATAPI. Anyway, I can hardly imagine how the modem could even be indirectly responsible for those errors. Copying one of those events and posting it would be a good place to start, but I have a feeling this will be one of those issues that doesn't get solved to any degree of intellectual satisfaction. I found another thread in which one user apparently solved a similar issue by re-connecting a USB device that was disconnected following a power loss. WTF?

Does the cable come into a modem, which you then feed your Imac by ethernet cable? If the answer is yes, than there is no reason why not. You can buy a wireless router, about $40 or so, and create your own home network. The router will have instructions for creating such a network.

I've got a small problem that is troubling me.

I want to set up a small fax server on Win2000 server but I haven't got any more phone jacks near the server. I do , however, have spare modems connected to workstations. So, I was wondering if there was a way to share a modem connection over the network. I've had a look at some third party modem sharing software but am unsure if this is what I need as it seems to deal with Internet connection sharing.

Ideally, I would like to share out a demand dial connection that I am able to manually (or automatically) use the modem to send faxes through (and receive also).

Any help would be grealy appreciated.

I know you can on 98 and above, but not sure in 95. Been so long since ive used it, check your dial-up connection options, and in advanced menu (if its there) check to see if there is an 'enable modem sharing' box there. Tick it. You will need to set the NIC IP addresses on the other machines to floating however as the other machines will not see the connection otherwise

I have a DSL internet connection at home.
My modem is Thomson Speedtouch 585(i).
I have disabled the WiFi for security reasons (some very smart computer guys stay in the neighborhood).
Out of the four ethernet points on the modem two are connected to my desktop and my laptop respectively. The third I have given it to my neighbour. The fourth is unused.

Someone at work suggested that sharing the internet connection with my neighbour may land me in soup one day, because if he does anything illegal via the internet, then that transaction will be traced back to me!!!
He suggested I install some Software to track the ip addresses passing through my modem.
Is it really needed to install such a software?
If yes, can you please suggest any software which tracks the ip addresses through my modem.

I've got 2 computers setup over a crossover cable. I'm trying to share the connection between the two. I've tried a few programs, and here is what I have come back with

- ICS works, but gives me horrid lag while gaming
- Winproxy is best, but costs $60 (which I don't have at the moment)
- Sygate Home Network has bugs
- Normal proxies work (like analogx proxy), but many programs do not support proxies

Right now I'm using ICS, because my winproxy trial ran out, so I'm at a loss. If anyone else knows a good program that is easy to configure please let me know, or if you know some other methods, that'd be great.

I must assume that you needed to change it back to your IP / Modem address, so this should negate the infections.
However you can be infected via Modems - Update your Antivirus and Antimalware programs and Re-scan just to be sure.

Are you having problems at all, or do you think that your system is now clean -

(btw my isp allows upto 3 ip's so i know for a fact there wouldnt be an issue there) , i know i could get a router however its more expensive and honestly i dont need the extra features, please help

A:sharing cable modem via switch,possible?

If you actually get three public IP addresses, then a switch will allow you to share the Internet. Note that if they're really public IP addresses, it's very likely that you will NOT be able to share files/printers between the machine. I know that when Comcast issues multiple public IP addresses, they're routinely not in the same subnet, so there will be no communication between the machines.

Truthfully, since a router is only about $20-30 if you do any shopping, there is no reason on this planet that anyone that can afford to have three computers can't afford the extra $10 or so to get a router and solve the problem the right way, rather than the switch.

A:Usb Modem Internet Sharing Problem

You need to enable the connection for all users, only then it becomes accessable. Under dialup connection properties, go to Options and tick boxes under Dialing Options, so when connection is made, you will get the dialog box (you can untick everything later, to not see that box more, it's important just for first connect). Now, there appear an option at connect to tick the box that sais something like, allow all users use this connection (don't remember exactly but think you will see it). Dial the connection, then you can again under connetion options untick all boxes. Disconnect and then re-connect again. Now you should be able to connect from other PC-s. Don't kow why this all is made so complicated, I spent all day figuring it out :S

Can you Share a modem in W2K/Pro.
If so How?
Thanks, Rick

A:{Advice Offered} - MODEM/Sharing

Yes. Go to the properties of your modem connection, and click on the Sharing tab.

I have not tested it so far, but my dad is planning to take his spare work PC home for my mom to use, and he is going to setup a small home network and will be using Win2K to share the modem, I will tell you how it goes.

If it does not go smoothly, you can always install a third-party modem sharing software, like aVirt Connection Suite.

Any hints or help would be great Dean "Posted by:Jone Now i know why the modem worked fine after i move it to another pci slot, i built a new pc and installed this modem on it, then all the problems started again, when i was checking the system settings i noticed that the modem was sharing the irq with the video card, so i moved it to a pci slot which was not sharing the irq with any other device then it got stable again."

I have 3 PCs and I'm having a cable modem installed and would like all the PCs to share the internet connection. I was just wondering if anyone knows of shareware modem sharing software or can recommend an off the shelf software that can share the modem with firewall protection. I just wanted to check my options, pricing, and to see what others have used.

If you want all the machines to have internet access then you should just run your modem/router LAN uplink to your existing 5p switch. Make sure all your machines, and the router are on the same subnet.

Hi Guys,

I'm using PPPsharlite to share modem internet
access between two Win95 computers on a LAN.
HTTP is the only access provided to the second

I have to grant PPPsharlite server status in ZA,
so does the second computer have a straight
pipeline to the internet (no ZA protection)?

I'm also wondering if ZA will work properly on
the second computer thru a utility like PPPsharlite.

Any experience (or ideas) on a setup like this?

Thanks, Mac

Hi Folks After too many hours of reading and trying 8.1 Windows Modem - Internet 3G Connection - USB Sharing various things It appears that Internet Connection Sharing ICS from USB G Modems has been broken in Windows On my Desktop PC which uses Windows Server I am Windows 8.1 - Internet Connection Sharing - USB 3G Modem able to share a Huawei E B Windows 8.1 - Internet Connection Sharing - USB 3G Modem USB Windows 8.1 - Internet Connection Sharing - USB 3G Modem G Modem to of the Ethernet ports to which is connected a Netgear Router with LAN ports and a Wireless Antenna which broadcasts a signal that can be used by my smartphone On my recently acquired Lenovo B Laptop I use the same SIM chip in a Huawei E USB G Modem but have not been able to share the connection with the Ethernet port I get the dreaded Unidentified Network and Limited connection statuses I tried the older modem but it doesn't appear to be compatible and I couldn't find any drivers for it for Windows I also tried sharing to an Ad Hoc Connection as the Laptop also has a Wireless NIC Network Interface Card The phone can see the signal broadcast by the Wireless NIC but is not able to communicate with the Internet I have tested the E USB modem with the Netgear router with a friend's Dell Inspiron that has Windows Vista installed and I was able to establish the sharing of the Internet Connection to the Router and hence could also access the Internet with the smartphone As soon as I am able I will perform the same test on the Laptop of another friend which has Windows installed Given that adding an Ad Hoc connection was removed from the GUI interface of Windows I am wondering if Microsoft have made a huge quot faux pas quot in overlooking the need for or eliminating without consultation this functionality which has worked fine in previous versions of the Operating System The following web page may also be related to this topic About the Wireless Ad Hoc API Windows However maybe there is a possibility that this problem is being caused by the modems needing updated firmware or quot Connection Management Software quot provided by the Internet Service Provider to be fully compatible with API changes in Windows Can anybody shed some light on this possibility So what alternative solutions are there It appears that Connectify allows the sharing of an Internet service between a USB G Modem and an Ethernet port If so what API would they be using to achieve this and could the same thing be achieved through the Command Prompt with Administrator Privileges using quot netsh quot Network Shell commands Does anyone know if Virtual Router Manager is compatible with Windows and is a viable solution to this problem Instead of an Ad Hoc connection being created using the wireless NIC can a secure Access Point be created to which the Modems connection could be shared Can quot netsh quot commands be used to achieve this I have also seen articles about creating an Access Point but they are using the same quot netsh quot commands that I have seen mentioned for the creation of an Ad Hoc Network connection Therefore can someone point me to a reliable and accurate resource for the creation of an Access Point using quot netsh quot commands If there is no reliable convenient software solution to this problem are there hardware related solutions Are there Routers with Wireless Output Antennas that can receive an inbound connection from a USB G Modem and then pass that connection to the PC Laptop via the Ethernet port of the PC Laptop as well as re-broadcast the signal via the output antenna If so how do you manage activating the connection to the service provider of the USB Modem Can the connection software that was installed when the USB Modem was connected to a USB port of the PC Laptop recognise that it is connected to the external router Even if it could maybe the sharing of a connection would again be thwarted due to changes in the APIs of Windows Thanks Michael

A:Windows 8.1 - Internet Connection Sharing - USB 3G Modem

Following up on the idea that maybe the Firmware or Connection Manager software needed updating, I did some more searching in this regard. I didn't find any recently listed drivers for my modem but on searching for a Windows 8.1 version of Mobile Partner, Huawei's Connection Manager, I discovered the following page.

Mobile Partner Version Released | HuaweiNews

This provided a later version than the customised version provided by my ISP. With mention of WiFi Direct on the above page, I was cautiously hopeful that I may have found the solution I was looking for.

So, I installed the latest version and configured it the same as that which was provided by my ISP and BINGO.

I was able to share the connection with my Ethernet port and hence the smartphone could access the Internet via the wireless signal from the router.

I still need to test whether I can also share the connection to the Wireless NIC. I'll report back soon.

I want to set up a wireless home network where I can share my internet connection, printer, and also share files among computers.
For the past year, I have been using a dlink wireless router to share my dsl connection. The set-up is currently as follows: modem to router and from the router one pc is connected with wires and three laptops are connected wirelessly. This has been fine to share the internet, but I don't know how to share the printer connected to the pc.
I would really appreciate anyones help.

A:printer sharing/file sharing

You didn't say what operating system(s) you use, so I guess I get to choose.

Run the Network Setup wizard (found in Control Panel of XP). Tell it each of your computers connects to the internet via "residential gateway" and that you want to enable file and printer sharing. Create a disk at the end only if you have a Windows PC other than XP or 2k Pro or Vista.

Windows XP firewall (if SP2) will be properly configured by the wizard. You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine. Unique computer names and same workgroup, of course.

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders (or drives) or printers you want to share, just right click on them and sharing ... . When sharing a printer, accept the offer to load other drivers if your other PCs have different Operating System(s).

When you first go into My Network Places there will be nothing there. The first time you click on 'View Workgroup computers' will probably result in great disappointment. It takes awhile (20 minutes or so) before all the computers in the workgroup get up-to-date and accurate lists of the other computers. Often you can speed up this process via Search for other computers.

When computers show up in My Network Places, double click on one to see its shares. If that includes a printer, you can right click on the printer to connect to it.

Recently I have set up 2 PCs trying to connect to internet sharing a single broadband, using Win98SE's ICS.

After setting up host PC and client PC, I could not get the client PC to go to the internet.

I suspect it is the DSL Modem/Bridge which does not support NAT, hence does not allow internet connection sharing. I checked my DSL modem, it is a Prolink Hurricane 9000/B, the manual says it is in Bridge mode, no router mode.

The funny thing is I am able to connect to Internet using this DSL modem, but my client PC can't.

Pls help. In dire straits. Any other solution? Such as using a 5 port switch?

A:DSL Modem/Bridge does not support Internet Connection Sharing?

If you are using Windows ICS then your modem doesn't have to support anything. It is the computer you are running ICS on that does the routing.

What exactly did you do trying to get the connection sharing going?

You will save yourself from a lot of headaches by getting a router. Either a small box from a store or any old junk PC with some firewall on it.

We have three 64 bit Window 7 machines on an Ethernet wireless/wired router (ASUS WL-520GC). Worked great? one of the three computers hosts a USB printer and shares with no problems (via a HomeGroup).

We had a broadband power line modem on the same Ethernet network connection and all three computers had sharing of the WAN internet? then we lost our internet connection capability when our supplier went bust!

We are now using a Verizon Wireless USB 720 broadband modem on the same computer that hosts the printer. That computer has internet connection and works fine. We cannot get the remaining two computers to see the internet.

Bridging the Verizon USB ?Home? network and the Ethernet ?Public? network doesn?t seem to work because we can?t set the local area network to ?Home.?

Any suggestions?

A:Internet sharing a Verizon Wireless USB modem and an Ethernet network

If I was going to use a Verizon USB modem on a network, I would use a router that you plug the modem into. Check out or do a Google search. I remember seeing routers for USB modems (cell service) for as low as $35, but most users recommend Cradlepoint routers.

If you are still on the Verizon 30 trial, you should check out, Millenicom has no contract and much higher usage caps, even unlimited using Verizon and Sprint service.

WMC recording/playback and media/file sharing seems to work fine until I go to copy a file between drives, where one of those drives is currently using some of its i/o bandwidth to do media. The copy hogs the i/o bandwidth, doing nasty things to the real-time needs.

How do I permanently tell Win7 x64 to do all [explorer] copies at a lower CPU and i/o (explorer.exe & system) priority and/or elevate WMC CPU & i/o (ehshell.exe?) and file/media sharing priorities a bit?

The PC is up to date on patches/drivers and should be able to prioritize obvious applications?

My questions are concerning confirming file replacement. I have a Hewlett Packard. My husband has an emachine. I've noticed on his computer when you are moving a picture from one folder to another it gives you a confirm file replacement option.

His actually shows you the picture itself which really comes in handy when making the choice to replace one file with another. On my Hp it simply shows you an icon. I would like to be able to view what file is being replaced.

We both have IE 6.0 Xp home edition with Sp2 ( if this helps )

Is this possible? If its not I will upload examples of what I am trying to accomplish to further help someone in assisting me with this problem.

I would be grateful to suggestions on how to accomplish this task.

Thank you

I have a PC running XP pro with SP2 and when I try and save a file from C: or D: drive to a network drive it comes up with the Confirm file Replacement window.

The problem with this is the file it wants to replace is the folder it is being saved into. The file and the folder have different file/folder names

If you need anymore info let me know

Saving files to the local HDD (C: & D:) are file.
Folder size limit is set to 5GB and only 11MB has been used and the user logged in has admin rights.
Also this happens under different logins so it is something to do with the PC, now a re-image will fix it but I don't want to use it as a first resort if I can find out what is causing this, if I can find out

From the help file:
"If your contact deletes a shared file, your local copy will be permanently deleted. However, if you delete a shared file, you can still recover it from the recycle bin. If you want to keep a file, copy it to a nonsharing folder."

So if you deleted it, it should be in the recycle bin as long as it hasn't been emptied. If the person who sent you the file deleted it, they should have it in their recycle bin.

Have done a windows file check and no problems.

This is normal after a cloning. The partition needs to be expanded. If you look in disk management is there a partition after your Windows C: partition? If there is then you will need to use a third party partition manager to first move the partition after C: and then expand C:.
Partition Wizard can do the job. All steps are virtual and will not complete until Apply is clicked. This lets you back out of any steps if a mistake is made.
If there is no partition after C: you can expand it in Disk Management by right clicking C: and selecting Extend Volume.
Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management?

Hi there.
In my flat we have a wireless network for sharing files and internet to everyone. But in my room i have a wired network to just share between my computers.
I have been wondering how to share files only throught the ethernet network and not throught the wireless. Does anyone know how to do this? I have one mac with OS X Leopard and one Windows XP computer

A:File Sharing

yes it can be done; I've got three systems and rent two rooms and provide Internet access to the roomies.
I fully share my three and block everything else with this technique;
you must control the ip address assignments;
I like mapping the trusted systems MAC addresses into predetermined ip addresses.
(you can also assign STATIC ip addresses, but still need [y] below)
This allows my systems to have ip addresses like, 0.3, 0.4;
[y] I then add (clone) 6 fake MAC addresses
(take any known MAC copy it and just modify the last XX settings)
to map ip assignments like, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 0.10
[y] which creates a range of trusted ip addresses (used in the firewall rules)
of --->
you have to have a better firewall than the default windows version
(eg Comodo, SunBelt)
enable sharing as normal
allow port access for your trusted systems only
(add a rule Allow i/o tcp/udp ports 135-139,445,631 source and dest ip range 192.168.x.1 -- 192.168.x.10)
everything else will default to denied access
on [4] above, some firewalls have a means to define a trusted subnet which works well too.

monitor the firewall log for exceptions and you will see denied access entries for
192.168.x.11 and above.

Any suggestions? It's really important that I get this working for school work.
I have everything checked correctly in the network card. I've turned off my firewall and disabled Kaspersky,,,what am I missing

Have a desktop WIN 7 and a Macbook running Win XP via Parallels.

XP on Mac can see drives folders and files on PC Win 7 OK!
PC Win 7 cannot see MAC XP drives, folders or files.

Have jumped thro all hoops and protocols to solve the network connection issue but have failed. I am probably too easily confused with the procedure to make this work.

Would appreciate some help or illustration of steps to take. Thanks

A:File sharing XP & Win 7

Parallels is tricky to access from outside of the Mac it is installed on. Mainly because it's OS that its running is virtual and all data is stored on the Mac's hard drive, which is a different file structure from Windows.

How much file sharing must be transferred?

It may be best to use a program like OneDrive and install that on both Windows OS to transfer files between Microsoft's cloud.

We recently set up a wireless network in our student house and can't seem to get file sharing to work too well. There are five PCs all connected; two on Vista and three on XP. I'm on Vista and can share files with one of the XP PCs but we can't access anyone else's and no one else can access anyone else's. We can all get on the internet fine though.

The other Vista PC appears on the network map but the XP ones don't though I think there's an update for XP to fix that (?). In any event that's obviously not too big a problem seeing as I can access XP files.

I get the following error message:
Error code: 0x80070035
The network path was not found

and when I click diagnose I get:
[NAME] is not a valid host name

Dunno whether that all makes sense but any ideas?

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt for the following commands.

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
PING <computer name>

<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
TCP/IP Netbios helper

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

I have 3 systems. Windows XP, Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. I'd like to get some clarification on the infamous "file sharing". I'd like to be able to copy items from my Windows XP machine to my Windows Vista machine securely. Is this possible? Thanks in advance. I tried looking through the Windows utilities but it just confused me more.

A:File Sharing

Throwing the word "securely" kind of puts a level of complexity into your possible answers. You can enforce some sort of authentication to get/put files from/to a share, but creating the share in the first place introduces some level of security risk. What you might want to make sure of is that your network is secure. Is there wireless access to your network? Does it require any type of key/encryption to access it? Which kind? Are you broadcasting your SSID or doing any MAC filtering? What other users are on your network and what sorts of activities do they do on the computers?

First, make sure your router is properly configured. In your ipconfig screenshot, I see the connections have DNS servers set to, and the secondary value is That's not correct. Since both computers use 192.168.1.x, your DNS server needs to be, not Also, make sure your router is set up for DHCP, and make sure your computers are also set up for DHCP and not static IPs.

Once you've fixed that, accomplish the following steps.

1. Uninstall any third party security/firewall applications (Norton, Mcafee, etc) from both computers. Reboot.
2. Install Microsoft Security Essentials on both computers. Reboot.
3. Enable the Windows firewall on both machines.
4. Verify both computers belong to the same workgroup. If they don't, put both computers in the same workgroup. Reboot.
5. Create identical users and passwords on both computers. For example, create user "Bob" with password "qazQAZ123" on both computers, and make both of them administrators. (They don't need admin access, but both users need to have the same type of access, ie power user, user, etc.) Reboot.

Once you've done those steps, see if you can access each computer.

I have a Windows Vista machine acting as a VPN server. I can connect fine through a Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP computer on another network. But, I have a few problems.

1. Can't ping server by name or public, private ip address

Now, yes I have set up all the shared folders security permissions but still when I type into run \\Server-PC , all it gives me is a little X that says Network device could not be found (or something similar to that) And yes my computers name is Server-PC. I have searched many websites and all they told me about is WINS server NETBIOS and the DNS tabs. I am a geek when it comes to computers but I don't get what WINS NETBIOS and the DNS tabs do. Any help solving these issues would be great! Thanks

A:VPN File Sharing

I think I have solved it. Anyone out there reading this listen!!!! I think all you have to do is go to ipv6 properties and uncheck use default gateway on remote network. I just read this on the internet and it is the only reasonable answer I could find!

This usually relates to a permissions issue. Try the tutorial in the link below for the win 7 machine.

For XP permissions it's in the link below.

I have a Netgear wireless router to share internet between 2 PC's and a WII.

Today I tried to set up file sharing as well.

I have names my workgroups the same and can see the PC upstairs from the one that is hard wired to the downstairs PC.

I have shared the main C: completely on both PC's

I can change all the files from downstairs without a problem.

When I go upstairs I can see the C: on the PC downstairs but it says I don't have permission to view them. I can't find the permissions tab anywhere.

The PC downstairs is connected with a network lead while the one upstairs in a USB dongle.

Please help

Have you enabled Simple File Sharing in both systems?

Have a look and run through these points here to see if it helps:

If you allow yourself full read/write and share access to all drive from both computers, it should work.

Hi. I have 2 computers hooked up to a router. I'm trying to set up a home network.

On one of the computers, the wizard recognizes the shared connection, but on the other it doesn't. It asks me what type of connection I have instead. I went through on the latter one and finished the setup wizard, however when I restarted I never saw a "Shared Documents" folder like I saw on the other comp. Please help. Thanks.

Hi Gang!

I just ordered a Dell laptop. It will be running XP home just like the desktop I already have. I want to set up a wireless network between the two machines. My question is this. If I want to share all files between both machines, do I need to install the basic program on both machines or will the laptop "read" both the programs and the associated files from the desktop. For example, do I need to install my Quicken program on the laptop inorder to work with the Quicken files located on my desktop? This will be my first networking attempt, so all help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

A:File Sharing

Simply sharing the files needs no special setup outside of the networking basics. BUT in order to run the program from both machines, it needs to be installed on both machines because of the need for support files that are installed within the operating system on each machine.

Hi, have a pc with xp sp2 and a laptop with vista home prem. They connect to the web fine using a router but I cannot for life of me get them to allow me to file share. I see the pc in my laptop network folder but when u click on the pc I get error message 0x8007035 network path could not be found. I don't see the laptop on the pc. I have tried many things, file sharing is all ok, I am getting frustrated to the extent the window is looking very vunerable to a flying laptop crashing through it. Any help would be most welcome. Firewalls are disabled.

One extra point, I can ping the lap from the PC but not vice versa.
