Suggestions to recovery from bad MBR/MFT?

Q: Suggestions to recovery from bad MBR/MFT?

I had a drive go south on me, looks like the MBR, MFT, and the backups for them got trashed on the drive after a reboot. The drive itself still is fully operational, and my usual go to software, ZAR, unfortunately is not doing the trick. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what to try?

Preferred Solution: Suggestions to recovery from bad MBR/MFT?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've used a program called testdisk to repair a messed up MFT, it's free.

A:Data Recovery..Any suggestions please

Larger files are seldom recoverable, as they are often fragmented. In this case cross linked with some video by the sound of it.

Specialist data recovery companies could probably do it given enough time and $. Lots of $.

I have a couple of flash drives I would like to get working. They are both recognised as a usb item but does not show up in my computer.

A:Any suggestions for Flash drive recovery?

Do you have them plugged in? Then try to coldstart computer and see if they show up. worked for me.

Also sometimes too many USB storage devices show in DEVICE MANAGER that are not plugged in, click VIEW - show hidden devices and the grayed out ones can be deleted.
and get

Are there any "good" file recovery programs for an external HD that is not functional ?

Files show up, but cannot open, Move, or Copy them.

Hopefully free, or inexpensive.

A:Lost File Recovery - any suggestions?

It doesn't say anthing about recovering from clumsy dogs and failed partial OS reinstalls but a try before you buy one can be dowloaded at http://www.runtime.org/products.htm.

A sudden impact followed by non-function infers physical damage so I don't know if any software recovery program is going to work in this instance.

A:[SOLVED] Data Recovery Help or Suggestions Please.

In Outlook Express you can't make a backup to a PST file anyway as that can only be done with Outlook from MS Office. That's why Outlook Express is pretty lame for an office environment as you have to back up every 'DBX' folder separately.

I'm afraid if Windows 7 has been installed on the previous XP partition, there is no chance of retrieving anything from the previous OS which has been overwritten.

I suggest your boss uses Office Outlook in future (Windows 7 has no built-in email client anyway so she'll have to decide on something). She can than easily make a regular backup as single a PST file which contains all contacts & all messages both sent & received.

A:Data Recovery Suggestions Needed

Often, when a bootable hard drive is moved from one system to another, users cannot access a group of folders (Docs/Settings, My Computer, etc.).This calls for a procedure known as "taking ownership" of the files. It's pretty routine, How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 <<Also Can I transfer everything from my crashed drive to a backup storage device and go ahead and format and reinstall everything on the original hard drive.>>I guess that I don't understand what you are asking. After you get all your desired data files off the troubled drive...you can do whatever you want with it.I would suggest that you do two things before even thinking about using it again: a. Run a manufacturer's diagnostic on it to ensure that it has no inherent, current problems...before attempting to reinstall XP on it. b. Use the XP CD to delete the existing partitions on it...then create a new partition/format/install XP...if that's your ultimate goal.Louis

Hi Fuzexi

This should help with some suggestions for software and guide you through the recovery:

If the files are corrupt then it seems more like a logical problem. Did you run a chkdsk on the drive? If the drive hangs then be careful your drive could be developing bad sectors.

I have the same problem.
Recently I updated my PC from windows 8.1 to windows 10.After almost a month I returned back to windows 8.1 from windows 10.
When I tried to install dell backup and recovery (Backup-and-Recovery_Application_64M9D_WN32_1.8.1.71_A00) I got factory error 5.
I cannot refresh my PC from windows also. I am getting the error “could not find the recovery environment”.
Now in command prompt
1. reagentc/info

2. reagentc/enable

3. Exit and reboot.
After the reboot I tried to install dell backup and recovery again. Then also I got the same “factory setup error 5”.

Then I checked the reagent/info in command prompt after reboot. It shows it is disabled.

Please help me.
Thank you

Hello,

Hoping to avoid a full reinstall of Windows XP, I'd like to try some repair procedures. The problem is, when I launch my "Vaio PCV-RS430G" recovery disc it goes straight to Sony's proprietary recovery interface which provides ONLY the preset option to wipe my 'c' drive and reinstall Windows. According to some MS articles I've read, an XP recovery disc should allow me to access the Windows Recovery Console (by typing "R" at the welcome screen). Can anyone suggest how I can bypass the Sony recovery and get to the Windows Recovery Console?

BTW, I have a "Spotmau PowerSuite 2008" CD. Just mentioning this in case it might be of some use here. Any help would be VERY MUCH appreciated

A:Hoping to undo partial recovery operation (recovery console)

If you have the installation CD you can do a repair installation. This will not affect any of the data or applications.Boot the computer from the XP CD. You may need to change boot order in the BIOS so that the CD-ROM is the first device in the boot order. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R. To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. You do not want to choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R.Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair isn't one of the option end the installation, this will mean that you will need to do a fresh installation of XP.The repair will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot, the repair installation will continue after the reboot.

If i then use that to restore the Windows 7 installation onto a new hard drive (as SSD) will that drive itself have the recovery media partition on it?

So if I then lose the USB stick could I restore again by holding down zero when powering on?

Or does it recover the Windows partition and nothing more?

Thank you

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEH25EN and while partitioning I lost somehow have lost the automatic recovery faciltiy that used to recover the whole system from the recovery files stored in a hidden drive.

Now I have copied the contents of the recovery drive using linux but am not able to create a bootable recovery disc with that so that I can recover to the original factory settings as I having a problem with many drivers if I install the same OS separately.

So is there any way that I can create a bootable recovery media for my system from that contents of the recovery drive, just copying in a pendrive or DVD isnt serving the purpose.

A:Dell Backup and Recovery is Unable to Create a Recovery DVD on Windows 8

Hi ylikonomos,
You can try to uninstall and re-install Dell Backup and Recovery Manager and Dell Support Center. Follow these steps:

Press Windows+ 'X' key on the keyboard.
Select 'Programs and Features' from the context menu that appears on the left bottom corner.

Uninstall Dell Backup and Recovery Manager and Dell Support Center from the application list.

Hereafter, check the BIOS version installed on the laptop. Press Windows + 'R' key, type msinfo32 and press Enter.   Locate the BIOS version. If it is A04, the BIOS update is not required. If not, update BIOS. Before flashing the BIOS please check the following:* No external devices (printer, USB drive, SD card, DVD) should be connected.* All other programs should be closed and documents saved.* The AC adapter and battery should be connected during this process. The battery should be 10% or more than 10% charged.
Here is the link for BIOS update: http://dell.to/VBwSAh. The laptop will reboot after this update. Visit this link: http://dell.to/VBz1fr and click Dell Support Center. Download and install the application. Once done, visit this link: http://bit.ly/UUjIs0 and install Dell Backup and Recovery Manager. Reboot the computer and check if you are able to create the recovery media.
Please try these steps and share the status.

Hello all Yup Got the XP recovery infection last night black screen then blue screen disabled task manager critical popups etc Protection was Microsoft Essentials Two main questions -Ran microsoft security scanner Microsoft essentials Rkill Malwarebytes Malware remover That seemed to have eliminate - viruses troj But it wasnt until I did a system restore that things started looking better After the Restore I infection,Windows icon recovery remains... XP still "Fixed" XP recovery had to run unhide exe and that made things seem normal Now to my question is what I did enough OR will I have to reinstall from disk etc I guess I kinda feel that the System Restore is not the best fix When would the malware rear its "Fixed" XP recovery infection,Windows XP recovery icon still remains... head again immediately or later I do not have the install disks Circa system that I cant unload for standard reasons -Also I have this "Fixed" XP recovery infection,Windows XP recovery icon still remains... shortcut icon on the desktop Windows XP "Fixed" XP recovery infection,Windows XP recovery icon still remains... Recovery what is that byte file that was created at the time of the infection pm Not sure what to do with this and where it came from malware Do I uninstall it I havent opened it Gratzi

A:"Fixed" XP recovery infection,Windows XP recovery icon still remains...

Sometimes this method of recovery works but other times it may not since System Restore was not designed to be a virus or malware removal tool. Whether it will be successful depends on what type of infection you are dealing with, what damage the malware has already caused, whether it disabled System Restore and if not, and what is restored during the process. This is what mvps.org has to say:NO. System Restore was not designed to be a virus or spyware removal tool and should not be depended on to do so. Click here for more information on virus and spyware removal. Can I use System Restore to remove virus or malware infection?Generally it's better to leave System Restore alone until the machine is clean and stable. However, in some cases, using System Restore may return some system stability if you are having problems running disinfection tools or booting up. If you are able to successfully use System Restore to return to a previous state there is no guarantee your computer will not still be infected. As such, you should immediately perform scans with your anti-virus and anti-malware tools afterwards, then monitor your system for any signs of infection. Also, I have this shortcut icon on the desktop 'Windows XP Recovery'...what is that? 819byte file that was created at the time of the infection 830pm 6/5/2011. Not sure what to do with this and where it came from...malware? Do I uninstall it? I havent opened it.If Malwarebytes Anti-Malware does not detect a file which you know to be malicious, use its built-in FileAssassin feature for removing stubborn malware files.Go to the "More Tools" tab and click on the "Run Tool" buttonBrowse to the location of the file(s) to remove using the drop down box next to "Look in:" at the top. When you find the file, click on it to highlight, then select Open. You will be prompted with a message warning: This file will be permanently deleted. Are you sure you want to continue?. Click Yes.If removal did not require a reboot, you will receive a message indicating the file was deleted successfully.Click Ok and exit MBAM.If prompted to reboot, then do so immediately.-- If the file returns, then you probably have other malware on your system which is protecting or regenerating it.Caution: Be careful what you delete. FileAssassin is a powerful program, designed to remove highly persistent files. Using it incorrectly could lead to serious problems with your operating system if removing a critical file.

A:Recover Deleted Windows 7 Recovery Files from Recovery Drive

You might be able to use a free recovery tool like Recuva or MiniTool Partition Wizard. But there are no guarantees that all deleted files will be recovered or that they will be in a usable condition.

Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

MiniTool Partition Recovery

It may be safer to contact HP support and buy a set of recovery disks for your particular machine. I'm taking a guess that you are in India?

Hi,
Just upgraded my new Inspiron do Windows 10.  Eveyrhing is now up-to-date (Windows updates, drivers, Dell updates, etc...).

Windows 10 has the ability to create a "Recovery USB Drive"... as well as the Dell Backup & Recovery application.  Which one should we choose ?... can they both be used to fully reinstall Windows 10 on a brand new disk drive ?  Is the USB recovery drive created with the Dell Backup & Recovery app is the same as the one created with Windows 10, except with a few more Dell applications ?

Oh and one last thing... let say in more than one year my hard drive crashes and I have to completely reinstall Windows 10, will I have to pay for it (since the 1 year free upgrade from Microsoft will have expired) or will I be able to reinstall and activate it ?

Thanks guys !

A:Dell Factory Recovery vs Windows 10 Recovery Drive

You'll need to use the windows 10 recovery, if what you want to do is restore windows 10. As for reinstall after 1 year, you won't have to pay anything, as your computer is activated under your Microsoft account.

We know nothing about your laptop, so it's hard to say. Who made it?? What model?

You probably have to access some program, either from a choice in your list of programs or through a particular keystroke during the boot process. Look in your list of available programs for something related to recovery or consult your manual.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 417NR having problems. It was bought used and at some point started having  cd-drive malfunctions where it no longer detected hardware and the drive didn't work. I reloaded completely from the recovery partition, it worked fine several days and I was able to install office but after that it stopped working again. I have tried an external usb cd drive but that doesn't work either. At this point, I'm thinking it has driver issues from the recovery and I'd need to buy the disk from HP but I'd like a second opinion as they are not free.

You can try adding Recovery partition to a boot menu to boot it using this method: Boot Recovery Partition using EasyBCD.

I am on Windows 10, and for the past couple months I have had booting/BSOD errors that usually give me "bad_system_config_info" and occasionally, "0xc000021a ". Sometimes, I have been able to boot in by accessing the UEFI settings, other times it seems like it just randomly decides to let me log in to my computer normally. When I am able to login, I check for viruses and I haven't found any, as well as run commands like "sfc/scannow", "chkdsk", or "bootsect".  I am trying to recreate recovery media via the HP Recovery Manager, but each time I insert the empty flashdrive, the Recovery Manager suddenly crashes. Please, any response to these combined issues would be greatly appreciated, I haven't been able to use this laptop regularly for months now.

>will I be able to use the "Expert Recovery Mode" of the Recovery CD to reinstall the Win XP Pro (factory pre-installed software) onto my C: partition, whilst not affecting the D, E & F partitions

Yes, this should be possible. Using the Expert Recovery Mode you should get the Ghost window in which you could select the partition where the OS should be installed. In such case only this partition would be formatted.

> will I be able to format the C: partition, using the "Expert Recovery Mode", without formatting the other partitions?

Yes, theoretically this should be possible.

> what is the exact "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
As I mentioned above, this mode allows you to restore the OS on a certain partition and only this partition will be formatted.

> where can I find further info on the "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?

Before I updated my laptop to Windows 10 I created a factory recovery media with Dell Backup and Recovery as suggested by Dell.  The upgrade went very well, but now I am getting reminders from Dell to update my recovery media.  However, when I use Dell Backup and Recovery and click the Update Your Recovery Media option, it always says near the end of the update that an error occurred during the process.  What is the cause of this error?  Is it possible to create another factory recovery media using the same USB drive that I used to create the current one, i.e. overwrite the current recovery data with new data?  Thanks for any information.

Hi all I'm new here, so I hope this is the right sub-forum for this question. I'm trying to create a Recovery disc for my laptop (Asus Zenbook), and as it doesn't have a CDROM, I'm following the instructions here 95 - Make a bootable Windows Recovery USB Flash drive from a Windows 7 system - RMPrepUSB to create the recovery disc on a USB pen drive. The problem I have is that when I look in the C:\Recovery folder, it looks empty to me. And yes, I have run the command prompt as Administrator. I can't proceed without this step in the process. Can anyone help? thanks

A:Empty C:\Recovery folder when trying to create Recovery Disc

   Information
We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.
startup repair disc-create

Did you make the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

Before you start make your Recovery disk.
Disable Boot Booster in BIOS setup before you perform system recovery from USB flash disk, external optical drive or hidden partition.

1. Press <F9> during bootup.
Ensure to press <F9> only once during bootup.
2. Select the language you use and click to continue.
3. Repeat the step 1—2 in the previous section.
4. Connect a USB storage device to your Eee PC and click Backup in the Recovery System dialog box to start the recovery files backup.
The size of the connected USB storage device should be larger than 16GB.
Memory cards are not supported for this function.
A dialog box appears as a reminder if you have not connected the USB storage device for system recovery backup to your Eee PC.
5. Select a desired USB storage device if more than one USB storage device is connected to your Eee PC and click Continue.
6. All the data on the selected USB storage device will be cleared. Click Continue to start the backup or click Back to backup your important data.
You will lose all your data on the selected USB storage device. Ensure to back up your important data beforehand
7. The system backup starts and click OK when done.

Win 7, I deleted during disk clean up and manually from AppData all files, which includes Chrome bookmarks as well! I tried to restore system to recover chrome bookmarks, but they are not showing up any more...

Is there any way possible to get those deleted chrome bookmarks back, even if it is by any files/data recovery software? is there any way of getting Appdata restored back to its previous state with all temp and data files back?

I noticed after system restore, my recycle bin was showing weird name files, i restored all of them and several time it asked me to merge or copy / replace with existing files, I have only one system restore back for previous date, if it can be helpful, I would like to know the steps to make it useful and effective to get chrome bookmarks back anyway possible...

After using samsung recovery, my computer won' t start properly. In normal mode it crashes immediately after loadin my background and desktop items. It shows a blue screen ( see image) and then will restart itself, giving me the option to start windows normally or in safe mode. I have tried safe mode, and that works slightly better. It doesn't crash all by itself before I even do anything. But it also won't open most programs properly ( like windows explorer). So I can't actually do something in safe mode. After I open a more advanced program ( like Chrome) it will crash again the same way as before. Can someone help me wih this?

P.S.: I am wriing this on my mobile phone, so please forgive me for any typos.

I'm running WinXP. My pc tells me that I already made a set of recovery discs, but I have no recollection of doing it. On many, many forums, I've found the recommendation of deleting the HPCD.sys files = problem solved. Only on *MY* pc [HP tower, btw], I get an error message of "recovery partition not found" when I delete just one of the HPCD.sys files and then try to run the cd recovery making tool.

Is there a way around this? If not, if I do a complete recovery -- back to factory settings -- will my ability to burn a set of recovery discs be restored?

Thanks.

It sounds to me like your rescue and recovery partition may be corrupted. My recommendations is to get the rescue and recovery CD's from Lenovo. I had to purchase some for an old T40 and it cost me like $45, but after you have them you can have piece of mind that you can replace the hard drive and still restore back to Factory settings. After you get the recovery CD's I would recommend reinstalling rescue and recovery.

This “HowTo” provides information and instruction how to create a USB recovery media flash drive using the Toshiba recovery ISO image files or Toshiba Recovery discs (DVDs)

To create a USB recovery media flash drive, a USB flash drive with at least 16GB disk space is suggested (depends on the size of the ISO images or recovery discs).

Note: Since 2015 the ISO layout has changed and a different procedure must be processed to create the USB media. The new recovery media type can be identified by the names of the ISO files.

I have a customer's NB200 on the bench. It came in with complete OS failure and would not boot from either the OS partition or the Recovery Partition.

I have checked the Hard Disk and it is in perfect working order. However it seems that all is not well as I cannot get it to boot from the recovery partition even after holding doen the 0 key.

I tried to instruct it to start from the BOOT.INI file by pointing a 'revoery' option at the partition but it just comes up with an error saying <Windows Path>\system32\HAL file is either missing or corrupt. Does anyone know how I should instruct the partition to start or how I could extract the information from the image files?

A:recovery lenovo 6072bvu withfactory recovery disks

'Startup sounds' as in the windows music or 'startup sounds' as in you hear fans and drives spinning up? If the former then you've got some kind of video problem. Try booting to safe mode. If it loads to the desktop set resolution to 800 x 600 and reboot to normal mode. Then try setting a higher resolution if desired. If the latter, well it still sounds like video. Do you have both an on-board video port and an added card? If so try both.

Do you mean a XP recovery Console cd? or a whole system image?

A:[G510] Recovery partition deleted and no Recovery ...

hi izadfard

Welcome to the Forums.

If you didn't create a recovery drive (using this method) then I recommend you contact lenovo on how to obtain a copy of the recovery disc which restores the preloaded Win8 OS, drivers, and apps.

Alternatively, if the machine came preloaded Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, you can try the following:

For Windows 8:
1. Obtain a Windows 8 installation disc and use it to reinstall Windows (if the system is preloaded with Windows 8, the installation will automatically detect the Win8 product key in the UEFI Firmware / BIOS and will automatically activate Windows).
2. From here, you can obtain the drivers from the G510 drivers page and/or upgrade to Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store (see this guide)

For Windows 8.1:
1. Check this guide on how to obtain a Windows 8.1 ISO (see Option One)
2. When finished, follow this guide to make a bootable UEFI Win8.1 installer via DVD or USB flashdrive and use it to install Windows (the installation should be able to detect the Windows 8.1 product key in the UEFI firmware that will let you activate Windows).
3. If successful, obtain the drivers from the G510 drivers page

Regards

Well I finished my project - the program script allows me to create MBR and GPT hard drive partitions with a recovery image partition. The script also allows me to install 3 different versions of windows. and lastly it allows me to capture a recovery (push button reset) image. which can then be used to create recovery media..

Here is the Menu Snippet:
(A) CREATE A "BIOS_MBR TYPE" PARTITION STRUCTURE
(B) CREATE A "UEFI_GPT TYPE" PARTITION STRUCTURE
(C) CAPTURE AND CREATE A "BIOS_MBR TYPE" RECOVERY
(D) CAPTURE AND CREATE A "UEFI TYPE" RECOVERY
(I) INSTALL MICROSOFT WINDOWS FROM THIS USB DRIVE
(X) QUIT THIS PROGRAM

WinPE 5.1 was the preinstallation environment use for testing

Hello! I'm a owner of a HP Mini 5101. It has a function to press F11 to return the system into the "out-of-the-box" state. But my problem starts here. When I press F11 I imediately get a screen that says Windows Boot manager on top and and error : 0xc000000e and required device is inaccessible. This started after I made a "clean" install with the DVD Windows 7 that came with the computer as I tried to avoid all the "crapware" that comes included with the new notebook. If I boot into Windows, the HP_RECOVERY partition is visible and the HP recovery image is on it. Is there anyway to get the F11 recovery back to working state? I have some BCD editing knowledge in that would help in any way with my problem..... Thank you very much! U

A:F11 HP recovery doesn't boot into recovery partition

Thank you very much for getting back to me so fast.I have to apologize as I did not explain my problem in the right way. Technically I am able to boot the partition, but the problem occurs when the partition needs to boot into WinRE or WinPE I guess so that the recovery can start. The loading process gets stuck immediately at the beginning even before anything "Windows related stuff" starts loading. So about five seconds after I turn on the computer and boot into the recovery partition, or pressing F11 the error that I'm describing shows up. Update: I managed to fix my problem. After setting the recovery partition to active, and booting from the installation USB with windows 7, I managed to fix the mbr that was corrupted and the partition didn't know what to boot. So after fixing it, i had no problem running the recovery. Thank you!

If you have a recovery drive - that includes the recovery partition - made on one computer, but have a toshiba laptop with a bad drive (but the recovery partition is ok), can you replace/copy the partition on the recovery drive with the recovery partition from the bad laptop HD?

My friend's laptop would not boot, and would not factory recover, reset, or refresh. I tried to clone the hard drive before I started messing with the disc. It would not clone, but I was able to copy the recovery partition to a USB drive.

He never make recovery discs, so could not re-install, but I can borrow the recovery drive that my aunt made for her laptop.

A:replace recovery partition in recovery drive?

There may be a couple problems with that. The Factory Image is too large to be just copied to a Fat32 partition, so it has to be divided in sections. You could do that using DISM and put the .swm files in the sources folder. Not even a guess as to whether it would work.

There is other information concerning the configuration of the computer making the recovery drive. If it was made on a different computer, that info would probably be incorrect and not allow a reset.

I have never tried, but you might be able to copy the Factory image to a drive formatted as NTFS and then set the recovery to look for that file for a reset. Maybe you have already copied the entire recovery partition...

If you assume the factory image is the same for both systems, can you copy the entire Recovery Image partition from the bad drive to the good drive?

A:Don't have Recovery partition and Recovery Manager to Reset ...

Hi there @HPian_B,  Before I provide troubleshooting documentation, I would like to take a minute to welcome you to the HP Support Community, where you can ask questions, find solutions and get help from the community! I read that you would like to reset your HP Pavilion g6-2310ex Notebook PC to factory settings.  Please read the document called Backing Up Your Files. This will provide you with ways to back up the files you have on your Notebook. Here is a document for you to read called Creating Recovery Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive. I pulled some information from the document for you. The first thing I would like to make you aware of is that only DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD+R, or DVD+R DL discs are compatible with the Recovery Media Creation program. The following disc types are not compatible with the Recovery Media Creation program:CDsDVD-RWDVD+RWDVD-RW DLDVD+RW DLYou will then also see that in the document it says: The Recovery Media Creation software program allows  only one complete set of discs to be created. The Recovery Media Creation software program  requires an uncorrupted recovery partition (Recovery Image (D) to create a set of discs. Uncorrupted means the recovery partition has  not been modified or removed. The creation process takes about 30 minutes per DVD. The entire recovery set does not need to be created in one session. The Recovery Media Creation software can be aborted at any time, except during the writing (burning) process, by clicking  Cancel. The next time the Recovery Media Creation software program is run, it automatically starts where it last stopped. You can use the recovery discs you create on your computer on another computer only if the second computer is the same model as the one that created the recovery discs. Here is a document called Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7) and another called Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using Microsoft Windows Backup and Restore. - This is used to Recover, Restore, or do a Clean Install of Windows 7.  Please make sure that you read these documents very carefully before you decided to reset to factory settings.  Thanks for being a part of the HP community. Please let me know if this helps resolve the issue by marking this post as "Accept as Solution". If you require further assistance let me know and I will gladly do all I can to help. Please also re-post with the exact error message you received. If you wish to say "thanks" for my effort to help, click the "thumbs up" to give me a Kudos. Thanks!Have a great day

Does anyone know how to create an ISO from a recovery partition? I'm looking to create a bootable flash drive to install XP on my ASUS 1005HA. (I have Windows 7 starter, but I don't want to pay the 80 bones to upgrade to the full version.) I also have an ASUS 1000HA with XP--and the corresponding recovery partition--that I'd like to use to put XP on the new netbook. Unfortunately, I don't have a USB optical drive (I'm cheap--sue me) and so I need to use the bootable flash drive.

Long story short, I know how to make the bootable flash, but I need an XP recovery ISO to load onto it to allow me to install the OS. Anybody know how I can make one from the recovery partitions?
