Hard drive "busy" light flashes when idle

Q: Hard drive "busy" light flashes when idle

Hey guys!

Recently, I've been noticing the hard drive "busy" light starts flashing a lot when it is not in use. The computer has been running slower since I noticed this. Websites "hang" for a second or two when trying to visit URLs as well.

Last night, I decided to get rid of AVG and installed Microsoft Security Essentials instead. Left it scanning overnight and it found a potential threat. I deleted the threat before taking note of the name of it. I did another scan after restarting and it nothing else was detected.

Afterwards, I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which found nothing. I also defragmented my hard drive and cleaned out some clutter with CCleaner (both haven't been done in months).

I have been using the computer all day and it still has the same issues. Not too sure what else to do next. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Luis

Preferred Solution: Hard drive "busy" light flashes when idle

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do not want to come across as a complete idiot, but........
PC is idle, no software active.
That little blue light will at times stay solid or it flashes constantly.
Task manager shows nothing running.

Is there any way I can see what is going on?

Not paranoid, just real curious.

A:HD light flashes for what reason when idle?

Well it could be a lot of things...

AV software scans while idle.

Windows indexing checks/scans when idle.

If you have auto updates enabled they may DL updates while idle.

Backup software will do it's work when the computer is idle.

And any number of other things that, for the same reason, need to perform background tasks but don;t want to interrupt you when you are actively using the computer.

You may be able to find out what it is using the windows resource monitor on the "Disk" tab.

[Edit]
Also log files, disk maintenance, page file maintenance, Microsoft office programs (like onenote, even if not open), some mail programs will check for the existence of mail periodically even when not open etc... the list is really endless [/edit]

Hey guys I posted this also on Tomshardware com as I'm trying to find a definite solution to my HDD issue Hoping to find some potential solutions here as well ------ I've been noticing lately that my hard drive seem to always be busy processing It doesn't matter what I do it's Drive busy Hard seems always busy, busy, as if something is working in the background Now the only change was last month when my video card died and I replaced it Hard Drive seems always busy, busy, busy with a new one Radeon HD but I don't see how it would related or does it In any case my computer isn't new It's a Dell Dimension The current hard drive is the original A gb Samsung HD LG I ran a whole bunch of different programs to check the disc such as HDTune and Active Smart and so on All say drive is ok so I'm confused The only message I received was from the Performance Monitor saying quot The average disk queue length is The disk may be at its maximum transfer capacity due to throughput and disk seeks quot I had done a clean install about months ago and not even half of what is currently on my HDD is back on as back then I realized I had too many games installed and didn't play them Hence there is even less data on Indexing is off defrag is off One thing I can point out is that some of the PC games I will play will make my HDD go berzerk they didn't before and some will literally freeze up and crash some other will freeze for a good - seconds and then unfreeze This is for any application even internet browsing through IE FF and Chrome Any thoughts on the possible problem Specs Dell Dimension E DuoCore ghz Windows bits gb HDD gb ddr ram Gigabyte Radeon - GB GDDR Factory Overlocked mhz

I?m on 2nd computer this week, another brother?s.. again. (I so hate owing them money, LOL)

Older computer: 350Mz, 256 RAM, 7.5 hard drive. Had 95 upgraded to 98. Fdisk with a 98 startup (yes it ask for CD support and I say yes and it recognizes it.) then formatted. Problem when I push the wondrous button for the door to open to put the 98 CD in, the pretty little green light flashed and that?s it? doesn?t open! aaaaaaa Using a paper click in the emergency opening in the front does nothing?. isn?t that what it?s for?

The thing worked last week. (I did remove it to put another one in but had to put it back. I checked the jumpers and it is correct.) What?s up, it?s like it thinks about it but then just doesn?t? :knock:

A:CD ROM drive door will not open even though light flashes..

Have you damage the front? It may have gotten jammed. My nephew hit mine with a spoon and it was stuck, so i lightly pried it open. If the cd drive is nothing specail you should try it.

I have the same issue with Windows 7, I will post a picture below.  It would be awesome if I could find out why the hard drive keeps whirling.  It is driving me crazy.  I work in a very quiet office and that is all I can hear.

A:Hard Drive Busy

You really should start your own topic.

Please download and run SeatTool for Windows.

Before the installation begins you will be prompted to either Decline or Accept the terms of the installation, click on I Accept.

Once the installation begins you will see an image similar to the one below.

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for HDDs and SSDs on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB ports.

2.  Detected Drives will list the HDDs and SSDs found.  Place a check mark in the drive box you want to run the scan on.

3.  You will see Basic Tests above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this.

4.  A menu will open with options for the different scans, please click on Long Generic Test

5.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

6.  Post the results of the scan in your topic.

7.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

When I first fire up my computer, it takes a while for the system to check things and be ready; I understand why that delay occurs. But often I will simply check one email on Yahoo or Gmail and while I am sitting quietly reading that email, I will see the light for the internal hard drive being very active and it will go out to my external hard drive and that light will come on for a long time. Then after several minutes of doing that, the lights will shut off and go quiet. I am curious, what the heck is the computer doing all that time?

A:Why is my hard drive so Busy?

I will see the light for the internal hard drive being very active and it will go out to my external hard drive and that light will come on for a long time. Then after several minutes of doing that, the lights will shut off and go quiet. Click to expand...

It sounds to me like your computer is doing a scheduled or automatic backup to the external hard drive.

Hello All-
New to the forums here....
I'd really like to know what's going on with my machine here; It's about a year old Dell Inspiron, Vista home premium Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz. Should be a hot rod, I hear, but......
It has slowed down quite a bit in the last few months. I noticed that while surfing, every time I click to change pages the hard drive light comes on steady for about 8 seconds, then, as soon as it goes out, the page changes. The modem lights don't start flashing till the page actually changes, so I'm thinking it's not the DSL, but my machine.
I'm using Qwest DSL, but it's the slowest DSL they have, due to being in a rural area. I also disabled indexing service. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

A:[SOLVED] Hard drive very busy

try a little disk cleanup. get rid of your temporary files and see if it helps. if your drive is getting full, it can slow things down.

I would like to know if what I am about to describe is occurring with many other users. Since I upgraded from Win7 to WIn10, I have noticed that my SSD seems to be a lot busier than it was in Win7. I've got a SSD so this disk activity is certainly not loud by any means. But I never used to hear those subtle little 'clicks' so frequently in the background as I do now. I have turned off many of the features under privacy (including the one that shares my internet connection with others to acquire WIndows Updates). But this 'busy' activity seems to continue. First, I thought if must be the new OS indexing all of my files since I did a clean install. But since it's now been a few weeks, that does not explain it. Does anyone have any thoughts on this issue? Thanks.

Have a look in task manager and see what is busy, also stop programs from opening with windows in the boot section.

My wife's ACER 5100 has lately slowed WAY down. It takes forever to boot and do anything. When it does finish booting the memory is 80% used up and the hard drive light is constantly flashing... I ran CCleaner and Easy Cleaner, as well as a full system virus scan. Any clue what the problem could be and how to fix it? I have attached the hijackthis log, but after that have no clue
Thanks for any suggestions.

A:Memory is all used up and hard drive ia always busy,,,

I see in your log that she has pcap installed. This is used legitimately in network monitoring/diagnosis software to capture info flowing across the wire. If you have never installed such software, I would deem it suspicious, as capturing network traffic can reveal account #s and other juicy things of interest to hackers.

A:Busy Hard Drive when connected to VPN

I found the culprit to be my security software McAfee Security Center was causing the problem. I narrowed it down by turning off services and found the McAfee Network Agent. Once that is stopped and disabled. The hard drive is not longer chugging away while I am on VPN. This does take away my ability to manage networks through McAfee Security Center.

- In Task Manager, select Performance Tab.
- Click on Resource Monitor button.
- Select Disk tab.
- Under Process with Disk activity you can see which programs are accessing your hard disk.

Which programs do you see? If possible attach a snapshot in your post.

I recently bought an HP Pavilion AMD Phenom with 8GB RAM running Windows Vista. For a full 10 minutes, right after restart, my hard drive starts writing to a System Volume Information file, which is a very long file name that begins with "{". Is this normal activity? I've been searching the internet for days and days for information on this, to no avail. I keep running across folks talking about the lastalive1.dat, Search index, and Superfetch being possible culprits. Just yesterday, I downloaded HijackThis for the first time, to help me better analyze the situation. I apologize ahead of time if my etiquette sucks; I'm new to submitting these log files ... and I'm new to seeking forum help. I was curious about what "(file missing)" means in my HijackThis log. Oh yeah, I'm used to dealing with the quirks of XP, not Vista. Anyway, I'm gonna attach my HijackThis log.

START | type diskmgmt.msc into the start search box - hit enter

Your second item about the boot-up - I have an HP dv7-1020us and do like it, but I can tell you that I had to go in and get rid of some items that I found were hanging at boot-up or just causing problems. One was QuickPlay, another Norton Internet Security. There are still some lingering issues that I have yet to get to on my system. I'd like to see what is going on in your system to see if it mirrors this one in any manner.

Please click on the link below in my sig area for Live SysInternals AutoRuns and save it to your desktop. Right-click on it and run as admin. Then let it scan for needed registry info. Save it as an ARN file - you will see the default ARN file extension when you go to save it. For info, the SysInternals AutoRuns program is from Microsoft TechNet.

Also, run msinfo32 and save as NFO file -
START | type msinfo32 into start search box - enter. Save w/NFO default file extension.

Zip up the ARN and NFO files and attach to your next post.

Regards. . .

whilst playing music through wmp, any online flash player or watching films, there is a crackle over the top of playback. This will calm down once my hard drive led stops flashing from loading. The strange thing is the music is stopping and stuttering to the exact pulse of the led. On top of this, my computer is now running very slowly on startup. once running it is fine but startup is now more than 5 or 6 minutes... any ideas?

A:music stuttering as hard drive led flashes..

Run some scans. It sounds like spyware/malware using up system resources and causing the boot/sound problems.
Good apps are malwarebytes and superantispyware.
If that fails to solve the problem, I would run memtest86.
Good to test the memory once in a while. See if you have ram starting to fail.

Folks I have a strange problem which has gradually been getting worse over the past couple of months I have a system which I built with a primary SSD containing the OS and a secondary Tb WD caviar green drive which contains mostly media files The second drive is partitioned into mb mb and mb partitions The problem started to show up a couple of months ago Drive busy. lost when is being Hard Secondary primary when the partitions on the secondary drive would randomly disappear Over time Secondary Hard Drive being lost when primary is busy. the Secondary Hard Drive being lost when primary is busy. frequency of the drop out of the secondary drive is increasing I have spent some time investigating the problem as it is getting really frustrating and have tried the following replaced the sata cables on both drives changed the sata ports which the drives are plugged into changed the secondary drive run chkdsk on both drives run WD data lifeguard took over hours on the TB secondary drive None of this has made any difference What I have discovered is that the problem can be replicated fairly easily If I use iTunes to play some music from the secondary drive and then launch a disk intensive executable on the primary then the drop out happens if the load on the primary disk lasts long enough For example loading Opera or Chrome will cause the problem to appear If I go into the device manager and scan for hardware changes then the missing drive will reappear It seems to be therefore that there is some kind of bottleneck in the system when the primary drive is busy causing the OS to lose track of the secondary drive I have checked the BIOS and it is up to date as are the relevant disk drivers I'd be grateful if anyone has any suggestions on how to proceed next The details of the system are contained in my Specs Thanks M

Hi all,

My laptop will periodically slow way, way down, barely responding and the hard drive light is solid.  If I wait 30 minutes or so, the hard drive light starts looking normal and again and the computer responds again normally.  The problem usually occurs within a few minutes after I wake it up from sleeping.

Any ideas as to how to find out what's causing this?

I am running W7 on a Toshiba laptop with 3GB of ram.  The hard drive is regularly defragged and is only 2/3 full.

Thank You!

-Rob

A:Computer periodically slows way down, hard drive very busy

I would start by googling your make and model of the Toshiba laptop and looking up what the lights mean.  Sometimes just because a light is solid doesn't necessarily mean it's OK.

Pay attention from the start of POST as well.  Lots of times there will be a specific sequence with the lights that tell you whether they're fine or not.

I know with Dells in the past there has been 5 lights and depending on the sequence would indicate that either there was a problem or it was fine.  If there was a problem, you'd know exactly what parts to replace depending on the sequence.  Mind you that was for power issues but now knowing your specific model and how it was engineered, something similar may be taking place.

If I leave the computer on but not being used then, after 10-15 minutes, the CPU shows as 100% busy and everything else works very slowly. This does not happen when the computer is left on Standby or if I disable the Wireless network connection.
No malware is reported by Norton or XsoftSpy.

What is this?

I'm not sure what started to cause this My computer was working perfectly fine up until this week HP dv Pavillion laptop gb with free Windows with latest updates Gb RAM The symptom is this All of the sudden applications start throwing the quot not responding quot state I check my hard drive light and see it's on non-stop no flicker When I listen to the laptop I hear the hard drive in a quot loop quot of click sounds A bunch of rapid clicks for about seconds that ends in a quot double-click quot sound a pause then repeats It stop responding hard intensely busy, Sporadic apps drive just keeps going If I Sporadic hard drive intensely busy, apps stop responding close down Outlook and a bunch of other applications and wait the pattern eventually stops and my laptop is functioning normally again I've run a disk defragmenter program and overall my drive showed to be in good shape I also ran a disk surface detector and didn't find anything wrong no bad Sporadic hard drive intensely busy, apps stop responding sectors At first I thought Outlook might have been the culprit but I've seen it trigger when something else Sporadic hard drive intensely busy, apps stop responding is running like Event Viewer So my question is is my laptop suffering from a quot partial quot hardware issue Or is it a software problem I managed to get the task manager running when the busy hard drive issue popped up to see what program was taxing the CPU and nothing I couldn't get the Resource Monitor open because it was just too damned busy My Event Viewer had a clutter of messages but the only thing I saw peculiar were strings of about quot Bonjour Service quot errors I cleared everything out to start fresh and once this happens again I'll note the time and see if there are any event entries that coincide that might shed some light Meanwhile any ideas

Well the first thing I want you to check is this:
Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager

In the window that loads click the + next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers > Select Primary IDE Channel > Properties > Advanced Settings and tell us what the settings there are.

These setting controls the speed that your harddrive transfers data at.

It is also possible that your harddrive is failing which would cause slow read/write times. If you could post the maker of your harddrive we can direct you to their specific diagnostic tool to see if your harddrive is in fact failing.

Ok, i will ask a question and hope someone will answer it...

You know that busy light that is located next to the on light in the front of the computer case?
Well, up until several months ago it started to be on constantly, never turns off. Yeah thats the problem whats making it do that?
I checked the cpu usage in task manager and it seems normal always about 1-2%.

How do i fix it?

( fresh install of new (2007)winxp pro, unadulterated ) no other software.

The sound is tick tock tick tock, similiar to an old style mechanical clock, the sound is not loud, but perceptable, and about once every 1.3 seconds, in time with the led flashes.

The constant interval hard drive activity prevents the hard drive from auto power down when computer is unattended for long periods of time. In essence rendering that power saving feature useless.

Of course it would be nice to know, just what is causing the reads, and how to stop this.

A:Constant hard drive activity at 1.3 second intervals. Led flashes in time to the tick

Generally, this is normal and is the strobe of the CD-ROM for contents by the autoplay functionality. Some flash and some don't. But that is not supposed to prevent any power events from taking place.

Do you see any thing in the Task Manager that also pulses like that? Does it make any difference if the drive has a CD in it?

Download and run ProcMon to see what disk reads and writes are taking place and by what.

I found a 1.7 ghz p4 motherboard on the cheap to upgrade my old p3 667, and i bought it in "working" condition, but i don't think so. Anyways, i got a pentium 4 support psu hooked up, and some pc-800/8 ram (it takes pc-800, would it work with pc-800/8?), and powered it on, and it just makes some strange beep code, followed by 1-1-1-1 beep code, but it dosen't post or show the bios, just a blank screen. So i reset the bios by taking out the battery for about 8 hours to ensure there was no charge left, and powered it back on, now it does not beep, but the power light just blinks, and still no screen.

Anyways, it is an HP-Vectra VL-800 motherboard
P4 1.7 ghz socket 423

the cpu fan comes on if that is any help.

I've tried the basic things like cleaning out the startup, running Windows update, updating the display driver, etc.

I would appreciate any help tracking down the cause. Thanks in advance!

Hi, start with the task manager.
Please post screenshots of your task manager of each column where there is activity, organised by highest top-most (click on the tab).

Eg here's my task manager on my old PC, CPU highest
You should have plenty of RAM at 6Gb, and with 3rd party AV installed you shouldn't have a problem with Windows Defender. I'm wondering if you might be having a problem with 'system and compressed memory'. We'll see.

Also please try a clean boot, and advise if that makes a change.
How to perform a Clean boot in Windows 10 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki

(You will need to reverse that manually, or set a system restore point before doing that, and use the restore point to reverse it. Note S. Restore is off by default in Win 10, which is weird).

I've been running Vista Business -bit on an HP Elitebook p for a few months now and just recently this started happening Once it's all done booting up the cursor Between Idle/Semi-Busy Flickering Cursor goes between the idle and Cursor Flickering Between Idle/Semi-Busy semi-busy pointer circle states every second or so which while not really being a quot problem quot so to speak is a hell of an annoyance The Cursor Flickering Between Idle/Semi-Busy only things I've noticed that have been correlated with it are I run Symantec Endpoint Protection our university requires it and I've noticed that when the tray icon doesn't show up is when the cursor does its flickering This used to work but as of late it hasn't as much I'd run Registry Booster to fix errors in the registry and then restart and then usually afterwards the Symantec tray icon would show up and the mouse would be back to normal however there have been sometimes when it hasn't done anything lately I've run virus malware spyware adware scans and nothing's come up anyone have any ideas Thanks a ton also sorry if this doesn't go here I'm new to the forum and this looked like the best place to put this thread

A:Cursor Flickering Between Idle/Semi-Busy

Don't use registry cleaners - it'll only make things worse.
More info on that here (even though it's an XP article, it applies to Vista and Win7 also): XP Fixes Myth #1: Registry Cleaners - Windows BBS

I would suggest:
- downloading a fresh copy of the Symantec Endpoint Protection
- then use this link to remove the current copy: How to manually uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection client from Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 2008 32-bit
- then install the fresh copy.

If that doesn't work, try opening a support case with Symantec. Here's a forum post about their removal tool called "CleanWipe": Endpoint Removal Tool | Symantec Connect

I've been noticing after re-installing Win 7 that I get random floppy drive seeks and the hard drive light flashes like crazy and then everything is fine again.I have Clamwin AV,Spyware Blaster and Spybot S&D installed, but that's it,no Windows Defender or Essentials AV.Any ideas what causes this? It's a minor annoyance, but I just want to make sure it's not damaging anything. Also would Readyboost help me? I've got 2 gigs dual channel PC3200 ram(or I could go with 2.5 gig single channel PC2700)and a P4 at 3 gig until I can afford to upgrade my comp. This is my first post in quite awhile so I hope this is in the right place Thanks.

A:Random floppy drive seek and hard drive light flashing

I have a fix for the floppy drive problem. Unplug it!

But er, it could easily be the AV software doing it, or possibly the Windows indexer.

To track it down you could try catching it in the act (if it's prolonged enough) by using the "Resource Monitor" found on the Performance tab of the Task Manager. Click on the "Disk" tab and wait for it to happen and see if something new shows up as doing disk IO.

Though also, disabling the AV software temporarily and see if it stops might be a first try...

Greetings,, I have a Dell Dimension E510. The other night, my son went to shut down the computer, and before it went down the correct way, he turned the power off. Now when he tries to turn the pc on, the power light will flash slowly, but the pc will never boot up. If it was a bad power supply, the power button would not even light up... right? Any ideas?

A:power light flashes, but pc won't boot

Get your Service Tag number (on the system and the paperwork) and type it in here to access all the stuff on your PC: http://support.dell.com/support/top...t_central?~ck=ln&c=us&cs=04&l=en&lnki=0&s=bsd
Look in the FAQ's or the manuals for how to reset the CMOS and that will probably fix it.
Your system has gotten stuck in a power save state.
The E510's need a BIOS upgrade (under downloads) to fixe several problems. Get it too

I have a Gateway, model ID49C. I bought it new about 3 years ago but replaced its battery less than a year ago.

This phenomenon has been happening for more than a year: When I plug in my computer to charge, sometimes the front power light (orange when charging) and the light for the power button start flashing in unison and the computer stops receiving charge. It immediately stops when I unplug the computer. This only seems to happen when the computer is open -- I can still fully charge it overnight. Lately it's started to happen so often that my computer can barely charge at all from the number of times I have to unplug it.

Does anyone know what's going on, or where I could look to find more info? Thanks for your help!

I have a a Seagate Free Agent Go 1TB. Few days back i connected it and the indication light on it continuosly flashes and it beeps. I suppose that the head of the drive has gone bad some how. is their any way i can remove the disk from the enclosure and use it with another 2.5" enclosure. The hard drive is still under warranty bt i do not want to send it to seagate as there is alot of important data in the drive and seagate will jus replace the hard drive with a new one..

Plz suggest..

A:Seagate 1TB Portable Not Reading (light Flashes)

The only other solution you have is to open the case and try the hard drive connected directly to a computer. If the drive is bad, getting your data off it by adata recovery service is going to be expensive. If it is just the enclosure using another enclosure would work fine. If you do not intend to make use of the Seagate Warranty, then I would say try an new enclosure. or you could go with something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707199 For future reference, data you do not have at least 2 back ups of is data you don't really care much about.

Hi, My daughter mentioned that her laptop was no longer working. It was working on battery and would not charge, eventually the battery drained and turned off. When you attempt to power it on the lblue light within the power button flashes 5 times. Tested the power supply and there was no output. Tried another 19V power supply with slightly more ampage, no luck. Tried with battery dettached... No Joy Found a few forum replies suggesting disconnecting the battery and charger, hold the power button down for 40 seconds and then reconnect the battery and power supply... No joy. I bought a replacement DC power socket cable harness (dc30100jn00 64Watt), fitted that.... No joy. I don't know anyone else with a battery the same size battery otherwise I would try that. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

A:Hard Drive Light / Hard Drive Problems

Hi sdh31873

Do not put both hard drives on the same string as the controller will default to the lowest speed hard drive. In fact I would think about getting rid of the old drive entirely as its age means that it should be very slow.

Have you tried turning the led HD connector to the motherboard over?

You can get an Promise PCI controller card that will allow you to add some extra IDE ports. The controller will show the devices on it to be D0, D1, D2 etc. It looks like a SCSI device to the system but hooks up IDE devices.

You need to FDISK and format a new hard drive before windows can see it.

A:hard drive light

First check in Task Manager (processes tab - click on "CPU" to order the % of use highest to lowest) to see what application is hogging the CPU, it *might* be the same one that is causing the HDD activity.

I would also suspect a trojan or other malware as a possibility.

Also make sure that the HDD actually has useable space left (My Computer - select drive with right click - Properties)

Yes, thats right, four svchosts! Anyways, this hard drive access is real annoying! It slows down my computer a lot! It seems that in linux, my hard disk light only flashes when I'm actually doing something, but it's always flashing in windows.

How do I get my hard drive to stop being accessed. I want to play my video games at fast speeds, without hard drive access slowing me down.

I recently installed a Western Digital SATA 250gig HD on my E-Machine W3107 as a secondary drive. I needed an adapter since this machine has an IDE cable and the original (main) drive is IDE. After installing and formatting, everything is working properly (to my knowledge), but the HD light is always on. I've adjusted my pagefile (since I also upgraded my RAM from 512meg to 2gig) so that on the main drive, it's set to 3-4gig and 4-5gig on the secondary (WD) drive. I have also gone into "msconfig" and stopped all non-windows processes to no avail. Is there something else that might fix this, or should I even worry about it? Thanks in advance!!

A:Hard-Drive light always on

you're going to need a massive amount of free space to support that size
swap file. After setting the new size, the system is going to mung the HD
to make it active ... it may take a long time.

suggest you reset it to something more reasonable,
shutdown most services,
disconnect from the Net,
and defrag the volume.

then resize as you please and reboot.

My processor recently crashed, so I installed a new one. I decided to upgrade the fan while I was at it. Since then, the computer runs like a champ. However, if the computer goes into standby and I bring it out of it, the hard drive light is constantly solid and the computer responds much slower every now and then. If I restart the computer, the problem goes away until it goes into standby again. I've ran a virus scan, did a check disk, and double-checked the connections. Anyone have any idea what could cause this? I'm stumped.

I'm running a Pentium D processor, Asus P5LP-LE motherboard, and Windows XP.

Right click the Task Bar and choose Task Manager. Go to the Processes tab, see what program is using the most CPU usage when it is running slow. Disable or uninstall if you don't need it.

Even when Task Manager and Resource Monitor show no disk activity, my hard drive light won't go off. My computer has two hard drives, a 250 and a 1 TB. The 250 has Windows 8, the 1 TB has Windows 7.

If I boot into 7, it's fine.

The light is fine as the computer is doing pre-OS loading but it seems like once Windows 8 gets control of the drive, the light won't turn off.

I have a single drive in my computer, and since installing Windows 8, the drive activity light blinks at approximately two second intervals, continuously. It did not do this under XP.

I sat down today to find out why I couldn't awaken my hard drive after finding it asleep. It is set to never sleep. After a manual shutdown and upon boot up, the hard drive light went out within a few seconds of the appearance of the desktop. Just before the light went out I could move the cursor, but the boot up process never completes and the cursor can no longer be moved after it goes out. I tried this three or four times with the same result. I run xp pro on that machine which is a six or seven year old hp, I don't know the processor type. Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

I have recently gained a Tecra A7 but without a battery or power adapter.
I purchased a power adapter (15V, 6.0A) and plugged it in.

Whenever I try to power the laptop, the only response I receive is the battery light flashing orange 11-12 times.
Note: I do not have any battery plugged in.

Could this be the problem?

Does anyone know a solution for this problem I'm experiencing?

Kind Regards,
Cheers,
KrisK

A:Tecra A7 - battery light flashes amber many times

Hello

If there is no hardware problems notebook must run with AC power supply only and without battery.
Of course we don?t know if this notebook is defective or not but fact is that you use, according Tecra A7 specification, right AC adapter.
If you can see flashing power led only it can be that power supply electronic is defective and need to be checked by authorized service provider.

Sorry but on this virtual way it is not easy to say more than that.

Hi I got this notebook new in November  and in January it died, it was sent to HP and it took them til the end of April to fix it, it was the mother board. The bloody thing has just died again. My oh noticed the battery was low earlie so plugged the charger in but didn't notice it wasn't charging until the battery completely ran out. He plugged said charger in again but nothing, the notebook will not turn on nor does the charger seem to work, we changed the fuse and still nothing. If you press the on button there is a rapid flashing light on the left hand side of the notebook which seems to be the charging light but the notebook remains unresponsive. Any ideas please? Thanks

Hello All

Would anyone have any idea what is causing a flash of light (a very thin line~~kinda in a square shape) to go across my screen once at startup just as the desktop finishes loading? See it once at every startup, but only at startup, and only at the end of the desktop loading.

Been happening for a few weeks now. It appeared a few times while I still had ME, but appears at every startup since installing XP SP2, which is about 3 weeks ago. My Screen Resolution is set at 1024 by 768 pixels, and my Color Quality is set on high (24 bit). My screen resolution is set at 75 Hertz.

Here's what I have done so far~~I ran all the tests (on all the tabs) on the DIRECT X DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS, and passed them all~~no problems found.

Don't know where to go from here~~help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi,

I have a Toshiba notebook and I've noticed something strange lately. If I haven't used the PC for several minutes and the monitor has shut off, the hard drive starts making a lot of noise. The noise isn't unusual itself, it just sounds as if the hard drive is really working, as if I'm loading a bunch of programs or something. As soon as I touch the mouse, the noise stops immediately. At first I thought it was making noise to activate the screen saver, but I disabled the screen saver and the noise hasn't stopped. It just doesn't make sense to me, and I keep wondering what my hard drive is doing to make all that noise (it continues for quite awhile too). Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

The Sleep option puts the entire computer to sleep, so that would likely cause any downloads or whatnot to stop when the computer enters the Sleep state.

Hello,

I have looked around google and in this forum to see if someone else had the same problem and found a solution but I could find nothing. Here's the issue:

I have two sata hard drives (raid setup) and it gets noisy when idling. It doesn't seem to be a physical problem (like bearings), it is more like a speaker beep but constant and not so loud (sounds like a high pitched mosquito). Whenever the OS requests something from the hd, this noise will go away and start right away when it idles.

I tried looking at the BIOS setup but I didn't found anything related to alerts/beeps/hard-drives.
I also noticed that this noise only happens afther Windows Vista is booted and sits at the login screen.

What should I do to fix this?

Useful info: Motherboard Intel DG45ID and 2x500GB SATA II 7200 Samsung (RAID)

Thank you!

For some time now my Hard Drive light remains ON even with no programs running. It blinks as I start up in the morning but soon goes ON and remains so. I've checked Task Manager and had a local geek help me look at processes running, but stopping everything but essential Windows systems, the HD light won't go out. I have uninstalled my antivirus program and the light will go out, but it reappears at next startup. I've uninstalled my antispyware program and the light will go out, but it reappears at next startup.

Can anyone offer a suggestion? I've also changed AV programs but with the same results.

A:Constant Hard Drive Light

Maybe those programs you removed...are running scans (which would account for HD activity).

Uninstalling a program shouild have no impact on a hard drive...unless doing so terminates a running application.

This week I noticed my hard drive light is always on. It used to be predictable with the computer slowing when the light was on during certain operations and then normal speed when the light was off. There is no noticeable slowdown. 24GB of 40GB western digital drive is free. I compared running processes with another similar machine and all were explainable or mandatory. I've run adaware and cleaned up, defrag regularly.

Could the light mean the drive has a problem or is a mystery process doing something to me?

New problem...

My hard drive light blinks every second or two, and is accompanied by the 'reading hard drive' sound.

Why is this?

More importantly - can any of you please help me fix it (i.e., stop it from blinking / reading the drive every second or two)?

Many thanks.

A:My hard drive light blinks every second or two..

Hi

simple fix...turn off the computer

no seriously, even though you arent using the computer , it is still working away, reading and writing to the drive, windows doesnt stop just because you arent using it.

There are many processes running on the average computer and its these that are using the drive.

My Pc's Hard Drive power LED light stays on. It started doing this shortly after I did a complete HD re-format and install of Win XP.
Is this just a coincidence?
The drive only makes noises when accessed for a read or write function, otherwise there is no noise from the drive, even though the LED stays on.
It never did this before!
Is this something that needs to be corrected? How?
Starting in Safe Mode has the same results--LED stays on.
Thanks for any help.

I came home Saturday night around 3am to look at my computer monitor led yellow. I knew something was wrong. I have tried to replace the battery on the mother board swapped the motherboard tried switching the video card slots everything. I am left clueless. I am not very experienced in working on computers so any help would be greatly appreciated. I am going to try replacing my video card next. I have also tried plugging a different hard drive in and it still makes no beeps or anything on power up but I know it is getting power because the fan is working. The Hd LED is SOLID RED!!

A:Constant Hard Drive Led Light on

if u get no beeps, try flashing the bios. look in your mobo's manual how to do it. it should be shortin some pins using the jumper provided there. if that doesnt work, try takin out the ram. if your comp starts beeping that means its the ram thats the problem. check your mobo for any bulging capacitors. or no...you said you changed your mobo. if you have any pci cards plugged in, take them out and also disconnect all ide or sata devices so you only have the cpu, video card and memory plugged in...if that doesnt work, like i already said, start by removing the ram first...if no beeps are heard, proceed to the video card...if it still doesnt work, change the power supply...if again, doesnt work, remove the cpu and if u have another one, try installing it. wish you the best of luck

It is still powering up but the Hard Drive light is on permanently and nothing is showing on the monitor. I have restarted and powered off and up again but it is still the same. HELP !!!"

You need to get inside it and check both the power and data cables on the back of the hard drive and the data cable to the mobo to see if they are seated properly!!!

It may be best to pull the plugs out and refit them to make sure!!!!
