Preferred Solution: Can't move my mouse, but computer is not frozen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You can't use any USB mice in your laptop? How many have you tried?

After going through lots of programs and cleaning out an infection, I restarted it and it is almost totally unusable. I can confirm that both mouse and keyboard work, mouse light is on, and keyboard lets me open the calculator. Any help please? Thanks.

If the mouse is USB (not a PS/2 connection), try disconnecting and then reconnecting. You could also try a different USB port for the mouse.

HP Pavilion XP purchased 2001. The problems is that when starting up the Pc the pointer fails to move. The only option is to re-start. Sometimes when re-starting, the CPU does not seem to start up and there is nothing on the monitor. Repeated re-starts sometimes cure if for a short time so can move pointer. But problems keeps recurring. diagnostic on mouse says working properly. done a system restore. done a disc check for errors. Done start up from last known configuration. Tried to change the mouse for another PS2 but still cannot move pointer to enter run command for the disc.

Please can anyone help

My work computer occasionally does this There doesn t seem to be any specific pattern -- sometimes it will run for days without a problem sometimes it so not even move pointer occassionally will the locks that mouse up Computer only runs for an hour It seems to only happen when I m processing large data files but then again that s pretty much the only thing I use this computer for I really don t think it s a virus driver or Computer occassionally locks up so that not even the mouse pointer will move software issue becuz the computer totally locks Computer occassionally locks up so that not even the mouse pointer will move up The mouse won t move and ctrl-alt-del doesn t work either It seems more like a hardware issue to me When I st built this computer it crashed like this fairly often A member here who helped me pick out the parts said that it would take a few heat cycles before the thermal paste for the CPU cooler completely bonded It seemed like he was right -- after a couple weeks the problem mostly went away But it s been really bad for the last week or so I ve had crashes in days The analyses I run w this computer generally take - hours so I lose a lot of processing time when this happens Is there any kind of monitor program that could record what s going on w the hardware so I d have a log of what happened before the crash more thing -- I have a Linksys network switch so both of my computer cans be hooked up to the same ethernet port Whenever the computer crashes my other computer loses internet and I have to power-cycle the switch It s a chicken-and-egg problem -- is the computer crashing and causing the switch to crash or is the switch crashing and causing the computer to crash There is no overclocking or anything like that This is the mobo I have http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E nbsp

A:Computer occassionally locks up so that not even the mouse pointer will move

Lockups can be caused by pretty much anything (hardware, OS, drivers, software) and there is no real way to pin point the issue.

The fact that it has always occurred, would indicate there has always been a problem. You shouldn't need a "few heat cycles" to cure anything. At least that is my experience.

As for the switch, the only test would be to replace the switch or completely remove the switch and test.

Have you checked Windows Event Viewer? Windows may or may not be logging errors. Typically not, as everything is usually normal until the event occurs, at which time Windows can't log anything anyway.

A:Computer freezes, windows unresponsive but can still move mouse

Freezing is normally caused by over heating issues. If you have a laptop clean all air vents with a can of compressed air and keep the laptop elevated from couch and bed like surfaces. If you have a desktop clean out all dust inside fans, PSU vents, heatsync and fan with a can of compressed air.

Go into bios and look at the temp readings and voltage readings mainly the 12v reading.

It most certainly could be the PSU.

A:Completely Frozen - Pointer Won't Move

Please remember that system restore only restores Windows system files (hence the name) and not any file that you create/download/delete unless its directly related to the Windows operating system.

It sounds like the multitude of system changes have damaged Windows, I would opt for a reinstall but selecting the Repair option.

Assume all critical files you need (documents etc) are backed up?

A:Computer is frozen when loading Windows, frozen at the Gigabyte Utilities screen

Quote:

doesnt progress any further than the Gigabyte utilities splash screen. I cannot open the CD drive

This signifies a hardware problem. When you power up the computer can you press the eject button for the CD drive? Does the tray open? Does the light on the CD drive light or blink? on the Gigabyte screen can you enter Setup (Bios) usually by pressing the Del key?
If not, then shut down the computer and unplug all drives (CD/DVD, HDD's, Floppy etc) and start the computer. Can you get into the Bios? If not, then you may have a failing Power Supply Unit. Try testing with another.

Trying to delete a file. As soon as I click on it it freezes Explorer.
I've tried doing the same, delete, OR rename, via multiple other applications and in them I can click on them, and attempt a rename, but the application then freezes. If I try to delete, the deletion scan comes up, and runs till I force close (task manager) the app.
It's an exe file, the exact file name can be seen in the attached screen shot.
All I want to do is make it gone. Any thoughts on why this happened and solutions before I resort to loading up a Linux live disc and deleting it that way?

When windows starts up there is no mouse pointer, and will stay hidden until i move my mouse. This was the case without the logitech drivers; with the drivers installed but not running and with the drivers installed and running. So i doubt this is because of the drivers.

Power options are set at maximum performance.

A:No mouse pointer after startup until i move the mouse

Open Settings....in "find a Setting" box at top type mouse....this should give you several options to play with.

Have you tried using a different mouse to see if the mouse is the problem? How about trying a USB mouse to see if that works? You say you tried re-booting the pc by unplugging and plugging in the mouse, does this mean that you simply unplugged the mouse or did you actually try shutting down the computer and re-starting it (the proper way through your Operating System)?

The nearest restore date just happened to be about eight days before,on the same day as my renewing of Kaspersky. But I went ahead.
When it restarted,a few of the normal start up programs began to load including Skype, and thats where it stalled. mouse is frozen in the middle of the screen.
Have bought another mouse, even used it in a different port.
Have started in safe mode and bios setup, the keyboard arrows work ok but I cant operate this machine without the mouse
Please help

From Safe Mode (F8 right after PC starts and before Windows logo) uninstall whatever you installed, or perform System Restore. You may want to backup any valuable data first.

Go to the Mfg. Web site an DL the latest drivers - it should "self install"

You didn't mention if the mouse is connected to the round PS/2 port or to one of the rectangular USB ports.

If the problem is continuing even after changing mice, it's not a mouse problem.

Make sure that you're not using it on a glossy or reflective surface.

My system is now "frozen". On the screen is my two ientities. The mouse pointer is located midway between them and WILL NOT move. I downloaded a NVIDIA update last nigth that may be the culprit, but I cannot do anything because the computer is frozen. There is a round blue icon lower left of the screen the looks like a blue clock. I am not sure it was there before. Any help is greatly appreciated. A little more info on the problem- When I hit F12 during rebooting, and test the system, the mouse WORKS FINE. But when I try to log onto the system, aht the identities page, the pointer and two identities form a perfect pyramid in the lower middle half of the page and the mouse pointer is just flat out frozen. It isn;t the mouse, somehow my pdientities login page is frozen.

I've had a new mouse for less than a year and lately it will suddenly and often freeze up on me. I cannot move the cursor at all when the freeze occurs. If the freezing happens once, it will occur often, freezing up just a few minutes after restarting my PC because of the previous freeze (it just did it!). It is supposedly a good mouse (Kensington without the ball, movement powered by light/laser) so I don't know what the deal is. Can anyone help???

A:Frozen mouse!!!

I could be many things,
starting with a broken wire on the mouse/driver or software problem/a trojan horse installed on the system and someon is messing with you. etc.

First, I'd suggest to get a spare mouse and use it for a while, see if keeps freezing. If it does, then you know the mouse it's ok and we need to start looking somewhere else.

You can get cheap mouses for 2 or 3 dollars.

so you have reinstalled windows??, if not try.
Try a ps2 mouse (if you have a port)
try uninstalling and reinstalling your USB controlers (uninstall then restart, they should come up)

usualy you need to use a tool from nortons to remove that stupid program, i havent used kaspersky is it good?

for AV i use AVG free by Grisoft and Antivir Personal by Avira, both are free and somtimes detect diferent threts, i find most full blown Internet Security programs are anoying and expencive.

any way tell us how you go.

I have three wireless USB mice, they have all stopped working two days ago. The cursor is stuck in the center of the monitor. The USB keyboard and printer are both working.

I've swapped ports, no change. I have run anti-virus, anti-malware software they found no problems. I cannot do a system restore, it was shut off (its back on now).

My pc doesn't have any PS2 connections for a wired mouse.
I don't use any mouse software, just the generic windows xp drivers.

However, I did find a ps2 to USB converter, plugged in a wired ps2 mouse and it works.
So why won't the wirelss USB mouse work ?

So any idea's or suggestions as what I can try next ?

Thank you for your time,

Bonnie

I am unable to go beyond the log in page when starting my computer due to a frozen mouse. If I wait for some time the log in page reverts to a screensaver and nothing further happens and I am forced to close down by holding in the On/Off button.
I have changed the batteries in the mouse and keyboard which is Logitech wireless and tried it on another computer and it works ok. I have tried another wireless mouse and a cable mouse and neither work. I am running windows XP and until I installed a new Apple iMac alongside I had no problems. I have moved my Advent computer to a different location and it still doesn't work. I couldn't find any tips in previous threads that quite fitted my circumstances thus I am asking for HELP:

I have a machine that is running XP Pro. The keyboard and mouse does not work at the login screen. I have switched the keyboard and mouse out with working ones so I know it is not these devices. I can get into the bios of the motherboard with the keyboard. I doubt that this machine has had its virus or spyware updated while it was in use. I was told that it just quit working while they were surfing the internet. No recovery disk was created for this machine either. Can someone help me out?

Do they work in Safe Mode ?
You can access safe mode by tapping the f8 key early in the boot process.

Hello to all at TSF,
I am using my computer for about 3 yr with Windows XP SP3 without any problem.
For protection I install paid software EMSISOFT Anti-Malware (starting at booth), Zone Alarm firewall and Avast Antivirus (starting manually ones a week).
A few days ago my computer starts rebooting itself randomly after 5 minutes to 2 hours regardless what program is in use at that moment. After reboot it behaves normal, I can use any program or internet as usual till next reboot. I uninstall some audio software (installed a month ago) clean computer and registry and now I get keyboard and mouse frozen instead rebooting. Only restart (power Off / On) helps until the next random time keyboard and mouse gets frozen.
I would appreciate it, if someone can help me to resolve this problem.
Regards,
GM741

I have been trying to fix problems, and a book provided steps that included start... lock

Later, I tried putting it in safe mode and it went through running some files and when it came back to the start menu, the mouse was frozen. I could still type in my password, and it went to the desktop but the mouse remains frozen, whether in safe mode or normal I hope I don't need some other password because I don't have one. Thanks. please.

Any suggestions on how to regain mouse control I have dual boot Win -Win and until recently I could still boot to a usable Win even though the lic registration was canceled presumably due to installing Win over the same lic on a different partition When you do the free upgrade it transfer s the lic from to I only use or trouble shooting problems where I want to make sure it s not a Win issue Now when I boot to I have no mouse The cursor just sits pointer Mouse frozen there Also the up down left right arrows don t work so can t select the MS key or any key Pretty hard to do anything when you lose all navigation ability Reinserting the USB connection and using different ports did nothing nor did plugging it into the main ps port with an adapter Also booting to safe mode does not change anything The USB mouse works just fine with Win Is this Microsoft s way of saying quot tsk tsk don t use that OS anymore quot nbsp

O/S Windows XP Home Edition w SP2--This unit has PS2 ports for both the mouse & keyboard. I purchased both a new mouse & keyboard. The mouse is laser type with a USB to PS2 adapter plug and the keyboard has a PS2 connector. After installation, they both worked but soon the the mouse froze. I rebooted twice and the mouse remains frozen. Dead mouse or what?

A:Mouse Frozen or Dead

Plug the mouse in using it's USB plug and see if it works.

The only other way to test is to try a different mouse, or put your mouse into a different computer and test.

If you are using PS2, then the mouse must be plugged into the computer BEFORE you start the computer in order to be recognized. However, you can plug in a USB mouse anytime and it should be recognized if it is working ok.

Hi
A friend has asked me to look at his comuter because when he boots up the mouse is frozen and he can't logon. (the picture comes up, but not able to click on it). I managed to get the welcome screen up once, and the message that personal settings were loading, but I left if for about 15 mins and it never came up. I can hear activity in the drive.

My friend doesn't want to do a clean install because he hasn't backed up any of his work and there is tons of artwork on there.

Any ideas please ?

I suggested taking the drive out and putting it into one of my machines to try and get the work off his drive, but only as a last resort.

Cheers

I am running Win XP Pro on an Abit KA7-100 board with an Athlon 700 CPU. WD-80GB HDD.

A few weeks ago I upped the memory with a 512 stick of Crucial memory to 1 GB of SDRAM. Everything was fine.

A couple of days ago the onboard RAM was reported as being only 512 MB. I reseated the memory modules without any effect.

Overnight, problems appeared. The principal one being that the mouse pointer is frozen in the centre of the screen.

The mouse is a Logitech MX700 cordless optical mouse.

I reinstalled the Logitech software without effect and attempted to reconnect the mouse with the base station. Result : No apparent effect.

The pointer is still frozen, after several reboots.

I propose to take out the memory and reseat it.

Is the order in which the memory banks are populated significant ?

Any ideas or suggestions will be gratefully received !

I recently reformatted a computer I got in 2000, for the first time. I put Windows XP Pro on, and so far everything seems to be perfect aside from the annoyance of downloading the occasional software when an old installation disc won't work.

However, one little thing is bothering me to death.

Whenever I am asked to restart, the mouse appears frozen. I have to use the windows key to get it to shutdown. Rebooting it, however, initializes the mouse and doesn't cause it to freeze.

Any idea what I can do to get my PC to recongize the mouse upon a simple restart function?

If you have a means to roll back your system then that should take care of it. Or your trackpad needs updated drivers.
Go to the support pages on the net for Asus and they will gve you the required info
Your son may have right clicked somewhere disabling the mouse.
Look in system properties under track pad and see if the check box is unticked

My computer keeps freezing, I can't move the mouse, and nothing moves on the screen. this lasts for maybe a minute, not too long, and then a box pops up saying:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://vsitoolbar/content/vsiUtils.js:1943

what is this and is there a way to stop it? Somtimes the page that has the pop up is not the one I am currently on, and so I have to navigate away from what I am doing to get rid of the box.

lately I have had the CPU usage box minimized in my taskbar, and I noticed that it did not move either.

I hope this is enough information, if not let me know and I'll try to find out what I can.

I'm currently on my husbands laptop looking for any help, I dont even know if this is the right catergory for my problem. I digress.

My puter on start-up goes to desktop but then it starts flickering and my mouse is frozen in the one spot.

My chosen remedy was to just let it "load" or whatever and left it for half an hour came back and it was going fine, but the next time I started it, its been stuck flickering for over an hour.

My O.S is windows XP, ran a diagnostic with trend micro before i turned it off last time, it found 3 trojans which have been quarantined, is any of this information relevant?

any help given will be appreciated

Hi,

Windows XP Pro.

At the office I use an external mouse on my computer.

At the end of the day I (usually) unplug the mouse before going into standby mode.

When I forget to disconnect mouse before going into standby mode...when I get home and resume my touchpad ends up being frozen and won't work.(Note: Built-in notebook keyboard does work however).

When this happens the only way I know how to correct the problem is to restart the computer.

Is there some magic or alternative way to unfreeze my mouse without having to restart the computer?

Thanks.

A:Want to Unfreeze a Frozen Notebook Mouse (Touchpad)

Ctrl \ Alt \ Delete. Click Processes and see if the mouse app is still running. If it is, right click on it and end processes.

Hi everyone - newby here. I have this acer (aspire 5100 series) about 3 yrs old with windows xp. It starts more or less normal but the entire board and mouse are not working. I have tried pressing F2 during start but it will not allow the keyboard to work. I have also tried Fn + F6 and every other key but it simply starts with a browser open and the pointer in the middle of the screen but nothing but the start button works. I have pulled the battery numerous times, it is not fried. I think there is a simple fix to this as I had a guy repair this problem a couple of months ago and he didnt reformat it. I think it may have something to do with a video driver or lack of..Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Hi! My computer has been acting weird lately. Sometimes it freezes and I can't use neither my mouse nor my keyboard, I have to press the power button and restart it manually.
It's not related to any particular activity, it happens at random, once only 1 minute after startup.

Most of the times it's just that, it freezes and I can't do nothing about it, but sometimes a BSOD appears.
I think it's hardware related because yesterday I reset the pc to the factory defaults, reinstalled 7 and got a BSOD while my PC is basically clean.

I've attached the DM log and a picture of the error. Do you know what it might be?

Many times when you get to this point you need to reformat and start from scratch, once clean you will need a legit copy of windows. When you get it up and running you may need some drivers from Toshiba.

Description of Problem:

It happens at random, but frequently. The user interface of me being on my computer will freeze, but I can still mouse around. I cannot click on applications, links, X out programs, anything. I hit CTRL ALT delete and bring up the tast manager, I can simply X out the manager and everything is normal again, until the problem happens again. Any ideas? questions for me?

I find it weird that I can simply X out the task manager and everything goes back to normal again.

Every few minutes my monitor screen freezes for 20 to 60 seconds. The mouse pointer still moves, but neither mouse nor keyboard commands have any effect. I have installed all updates for both XP and for Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900.

My system has:
Pentium 4 630 (3.0GHz)
2 GB PC-3200 DDR RAM
XP Media Center, SP 2 with all updates.
I use one monitor for two computers via a Belkin "Flip" A/B switch.

Unfortunately we do not support Hiren's Boot CD, not only does the image contain copyright-protected microsoft files, it contains also a few illegal/questionable applications.Try this please. You will need a USB drive.Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computerRun GETxPUD.exeA new folder will appear on the desktop.Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.batThe program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.Next download driver.sh to your USB driveRemove the USB & CD and insert it in the sick computerBoot the Sick computer with the CD you just burnedThe computer must be set to boot from the CDGently tap F12 and choose to boot from the CDFollow the promptsA Welcome to xPUD screen will appearPress FileExpand mntsda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDDsdb1 is likely your USBClick on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded therePress Tool at the topChoose Open TerminalType bash driver.shPress EnterAfter it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txtRemove the USB drive and insert it back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt

I am running Normal XP and the mouse pointer (serial Mouse) will not move. In fact, when the pointer is seen on the black monitor screen just before the startup list of names, (immediately after the Microsoft logo and blue dot loading indicator against the black background) the pointer is solid. I exchanged the mouse with one from another computer which I knew works, and it appears it is not the mouse's fault. Tried safe mode to do a system restore and no luck. How can I ascertain the problem without a mouse to navigate the menus?
