New Build: Western Digital Blue or Black?

Q: New Build: Western Digital Blue or Black?

This build will be for my 77 year old mother who lives in another state and I am trying to build this as stable and problem free preventative mode as best as I can with the understanding that any hardware can fail at any time.

Anyway, NewEgg is having both their Blue and Black WD 1TB hard drives on sale that goes off of sale after tomorrow. I know Black is often the choice due to build quality and 5 year warranty. However, the Blue would really help budget wise because every dollar counts and it sees many people have had good success with the Blue.

She does MS Office, email, surfing plus she has an online business that keeps her very busy along with uploading a lot of photos.

Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Blue. Because of her work tasks.

For a while now, I've been curious to know what the differences are in the Western Digital Caviar Series.
So far as I know, Black is high performance, Green is eco-friendly and slow, but I'm not sure what the Blue series has to offer, other than a lower price tag.
Can anyone clearify what the techinical differences are between Black and Blue? For high performace reasons, I bought the Black series for my tower, but what would I have been missing out on had I gone for the Blue series?

Thanks in advance.

A:Western Digital hard drives: The differences between Black and Blue Series

In theory, the Black is supposed to be the faster drive. In actuality, there isn't much between them. Speed rather depends on platter size and cache - The Black drives are either 32 or 64Mb cache, while the Blue drives top out at 32Mb.
Black drives carry a five year warranty, while Blue drives are three years which is probably of more significance.

Hi, I want to buy a new hard drive for my desktop PC, and I was wondering if the western digital black 250GB hard drive or western digital enterprise 250GB hard drive would work better for such a PC. Both of the HDDs I mentioned are SATA, in case you're wondering.

Just received this drive today. Previously using a WD 320 SATA 2 drive which works perfectly. Wanted to use the new drive being it has a 32 bit buffer but having problems. I cannot complete any install with Vista because it is always looking for drivers. Motherboard is a KSI K9A2 CF. Tried everything I can think of but really like to use this drive as a boot drive.. The drive partitions and formats without a problem, just will not let you use it as a boot drive. Any ideas..

If you're saying/thinking that Vista is looking for drivers for that hard drive, that's not the case as it's not a requirement. Unless the hard drive is bad or damaged, your issues lay elsewhere.

- Check that the SATA cable is correctly hooked up, same for power connections.
- Check that the hard drive is connected to the correct SATA ports and that the ports are properly configured through the BIOS.

What Vista "might" be looking for are the MB's SATA/RAID drivers.

Are you using RAID? Is the SATA port the HD is on set to RAID? Again, check the BIOS settings. Unless you?re using RAID, you should be set to IDE/SATA. Check your manual though.

And for your reference, I just moved from 4 WD 320gig HD's to two 500Gig Caviar Blacks. One containing Vista Ultimate x64, the other containing Windows 7 x64. No special required to install the OS.

I just ordered this drive from TD, and I got to wondering if there is anything that I need to do different for it to be able to use the full capacity of the drive? I will probably partition the first 100GBs for adding another OS to my secondary rig, and the remainder in multiple partitions for archiving data.

A:Western Digital 1TB Black Caviar

There isn't anything special that you should have to do. As long as it your box recognizes the drive, you should get all of the capacity. A 1TB drive will show up as 931GB to Windows 7.

OK, I hope you guys can give me some advice here. Just installed my new WD Black Caviar 1TB.
What I would like to know is how to configure now? I currently have 3 Hard drives. 1 x 320gb Seagate Baracuda, 1 x 320gb WD, and then the 1TB drive. Currently I have three OS set up. Windows 7 7100 64bit, 7127 64bit, and 7100 Chinese 32bit. These are all on my Seagate HD. My data and everything else is on the 320gb WD.
Obviously the 1TB drive is the fastest, so I would like to utilize it fully. Should I move my default OS here? Should I partition it first? Or should I keep my data on this?
Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

A:Western Digital Black Caviar 1TB

What I usally do is this, and for the record I just bought that same drive from newegg for $90.00 so im stoked for its arrival!

First I always partition the drive in 2

Give your first partition something like 400 gigs and the d partition 600
I only install OS and Apps to the C drive all DATA, Images, saves, documents, pictures, music reside on D

so when I reformat I dont lose my data just the apps and its a much faster re-install.

I also leave in a secondary Drive or an external drive and use that for backups of the D important data so if one drive dies your set.

I don't do any mirror because of costs, and speed issues (no im not setting up raid 0, or 5 on a home PC) my method works and is cheap done multiple recoveries this way.

Always do a fresh install never upgrade over something if possible!

When installing new devices remove all refrences to old devices PRIOR to installing new hardware.

Thats all I can tell you. Been living by this for years and no problems since.

If everything is passing then it may have been a glitch in the software and it just lost it's ability to talk to the drive.

Obliviously you should always be making backups anyway.

I recently built my first rig with a Samsung SSD and a Western Digital HDD The OS is on the SSD and the WD will be used for storage The problem is that both Windows and Disk Management do not recognize the drive My Bios reads it just fine however This is merely a recent development - last night the disk could be found in Disk Management but the problem arose when it started to randomly disappear during formatting I shut down the computer and attempted to switch the SATA ports hoping that would help but I wound up creating more problems for myself Now I've got the computer back in the same configuration it was in when I attempted to first format the HDD and it's not showing up in Disk Management or Windows As I said the bios is able to read it just fine This is the second HDD I've attempted to install The previous one just stopped during formatting and failed a number of diagnostics I bought this most recent one and I'm having 1TB Black Not Caviar Western Recognized Digital the current set of problems with it Last Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB Not Recognized night it was recognized both in Disk Management and the Western Digital diagnostics software passing just fine The problems all began when the disk began disappearing during formatting Now Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB Not Recognized I can't see it anywhere except the bios and post screen I'm this close to just reinstalling Windows and leaving the drive connected to see if I can format it during installation

ok, my hard drive is a caviar black 1tb, (WD1001FALS) , its like less than one and a half years old ,today my coomputer started freezing momentarily, i tested the hard drive and turns out it has some bad sectors...HD tune benchmark fails, WD Diagnostics utility fails during diagnostics...: heres screenshots of HD Tune:

so how can i fix this? i did some googling, turns out that the drives controller shouldve done it automatically and transparently ....well it didnt, so what do i do?

A:Bad sector on Western Digital Caviar Black

Time for a new drive. I've been where you are now. There are times when diagnostics can fix certain sector issues, but like you I have had to get a replacement because it was beyond the drive's controller to rectify the problem.

A shame for you because the WD Caviar Blacks are some of their best.

While Defraggler worked great in XP and was superior to XP's native defragger, I've found that it doesn't play well with Win 7 and caused far more problems than it corrected. It also was as slow as a dead turtle with four broken legs. Win 7's native defragger works much, much better than Defraggler and it's all I use now. I have it set on my computer to automatically defrag my HDDs (SSDs should never be defragged) every Wednesday during the wee hours (when I'm normally sawing logs). I check to see how fragmented my drives are every once in a blue moon and they are almost always at 0% (once in a while one of them may get up to a whopping 1%).

To get to Win 7's defragger, just hit the Windows key and type "defrag" (without the quotes).

I have a couple of 1TB Greens in external enclosures.
I like them because they run cooler and my externals don't have good cooling ... And I don't run them all the time.

I'm using 640GB Blacks in my Tower.
Their supposed to be better because of the double Disc Bearings .. and have a 5 year warranty.
I've heard that if the disc support gets sloppy .. It has trouble reading the disc.

My 640 backs are just a little noisy as compared to my older 320s ... The double platters are not balanced perfectly.

Okay I'm one of those computer repair guys, where people bring their pcs so I fix them. For the past month Ive gotten 3 pcs that have gotten hdd corruption errors and odd thing is that they don. Overheat they all had win vista and they all had western digital Scorpio blues. Some one tell me is this just suit luck coincidence or should I go sue western digital for making defective harddrives?

A:WTF western digital scorpio blue

Don't overlook bad or cheap ram. That can cause corrupt data on the hard drive too.

As for suing WD, that's pointless. If the drive is still under warranty they'll replace it once you've tested it with their own diagnostic software to confirm the drive is faulty. If it's out of warranty, WD are not liable anyway.

Bottom line is, you can't blame the drive until you've tested it with the maker's software.

Run the manufacturer's diagnostics on the run and get a their result, also the WD diagnostics offer an option to repair the drive - you may have to run the CD version of the diagnostics to be offered the repair though. Or if the drive fails then you can use the error code to have the drive replaced under the 3 or 5 year warranty.

I have a question. As all you techies probably know, when you turn on a pc that has an external western digital HDD connected to it, the HDD turns on and off with the computer. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Reason being, I only back up to it seldom, and I often play loud music; I don't want my HDD on all the time when my computer is on. Is there some kind of workaround vs turning off the HDD right after it turns on with the PC every single time? (It's probably causing wear and tear when I do that).

Thanks everyone!

2) It doesnt show up in my computer

I at one time formatted it but alas it is now doing the same thing, when I look at device

What gives ?? I did disconnect it and reconnect it, selected from bios to AUTO

detect it but it seems that nothing I have been trying lately isn't working

Does anyone have any suggestions ??

Dose it mean i will have to update the Bios? Or is it windows?

I assume this is an internal HD.
Try connecting it to one of your standard ATA-100 IDE-cables first.
If there is already a HD or CD on it, set the new HD to slave.
If this is the first drive on an empty IDE, set it to Master.

In your BIOS set the corresponding IDE-connection to Automatic
(Primary ID Master or Slave, or Secondary ID Master or Slave)

I have a mybook 320gb drive. I use it stricktley for backup. Now the power won't come on and the world wants 600.00 beans for data recovery. You can't open these puppies cause they are laser sealed.
I ran my own little check on it. I used to be an electronics tech in a different field. Here's the deal. When the firewire is plugged in and the power cord is too there is no recognition. I plug in a usb cable and it recognizes "blank Oxford drive". If I unplug it the hardware goes away. The power button is fried I think... Have you ever had these issues thrown out to you? I really don't care about the warrenty but I want opinions before I crack this casing open...

Thanks,
Christopher

A:Western Digital got me down :(

The box should just have a regular ATA drive inside it, there should be no worry about opening the case if warranty is not an issue. Once you have the drive out you can try installing it internally inside your computer or another USB enclosure.

I doubt its the power button if the unit does get detected through a USB connection, its hopefully the electronics in the enclosure.

P.S. If the drive contains the only copy of data then it is NOT a backup. One copy is never a backup, its a disaster in waiting, or one that has already happened.

Oh yeah M8....
Just install in ur puter and connect to any of the MOBO unused SATA connections, pwr and data cables.
Check if HD is picked up in the BIOS durning start and or read in the device manager under disk drive
You need not move any of your drives around.....
I would guess that you can connect 6 SATA drives internally and a bunch externally....

Why are so many of my Western Digital HDD's expiring 2-3 years old?
Are Western Digital bad at making Hard drives?
4 Drives have failed in a year and they are only 2-3 years old....
Not covered by warranty...

A:Why are so many of my Western Digital HDD's expiring?

I don't think that is WD specific. Maybe it is due to your particular environment (heat, dust, etc.). I just had an external Seagate fail. But that was the first time any of my appr. 20 disks failed.

I have a 80 GB external harddrive and I plug it into my computer using a usb cable and my computer finds the hardware and installs the driver and everything worked fine.

I've been out of town for a month or so and now that i get back and plug everything back in my HD will not open.

Everytime I click on the F: drive in My Computer it will open a window and that window will freeze and when I hit control-alt-delete it says Not Responding. I have all my files and programs on this harddrive can anyone help me so I can get it to work again.

I'm using XP Pro any help is appreciated.

A:Western Digital External HD

I don't have a quick solution for you yet but the last thing you should try is removing the drive from the case and installing it on your computer as an IDE device (slave). You should be able to access your data that way.

If I were to get one of Western Digital's Raptor 10,000RPM hard drives, I was wondering what I should put on it.

The one I may get will likely be the 36GB, possibly the 74, but there is no chance that it will be the 150. In addition to this, I plan to buy a 320GB hard drive for additional storage.

But what sort of things would I put on the Raptor? I'm guessing putting Windows on it would decrease boot times, and I suppose I should put games that have incredibly long loading times so that they can load faster.

Really, I just want to clarify that this would be the proper use of the drive, and whether or not it is worth the insane $:GB ratio for the performance benefits.

Or should I just buy a 320GB and a 500GB?

A:Western Digital Raptor...

Not having ever owned something that zoomed like 10K RPM, I would guess that the extra 2,800 RPM wouldn't make the extra money worthwhile. It's still not filling the SATA throughput cap of 3GB/s. Not a bleedin' chance.

Tell me if I'm wrong here, I'm just taking a stab at it.

First off, I do not know the answer to your question as to whether is can be done. But, I will advise you to avoid overlays if possible. Use whatever other means that may be available to you to accomplish what you want.

Overlays have always introduced a layer on instability.

What is it you want to accomplish? Perhaps we can help you do it another way.

A:Western Digital NAS box not recognised

First of all if the drive is out of warranty, you can open the drive and plug in bare sata drive to any sata port on your pc and copy out whatever you want to so not to worry.
I have been using Nas drives for years and the one issue I have always seen is the power cords go out and can cause what you are seeing. You probably have a 3 year warranty on that so I would contact WD. You can check "warranty status" on their site and request rma, but of course the first thing to do is carefully open it and copy out what is on it. They may also just know the issue and ie send you a new power cord as well.

First thing I would do is take the hard drive out and attach it to the secondary channel of a working pc to salvage data. Once you have the data safely backed up, you can out it back, download and run WD diagnostics to rule out drive failure.

A:Western Digital WD800

Try connecting it as master on the other channel. But it sounds like you may have the jumpers wrong. The other drive on the cable may need to have its jumper changed, too, since some drives require a different setting if there is a slave present on the same cable.

Or you may be using a CS-only cable. Again, check the jumper on the other drive to find out.

If the other drive had XP on it, you will probably be locked out of the files. You will need to own them before you can access them (and some folders may appear empty when they are not).

(You do not need to go into Safe Mode as those directions say if you have XP Home. You can get the Security tab using this:

While I was searching I found two identical hard drives, but one was WESTERN DIGITAL and the other one was SEAGATE.

What do you think which one is better (or more reliable)?

Even though I personally use Seagate, I would vote for either one. I've had equally good and bad luck with all drive manufacturers.

With only those two options, anyone casting a vote would be seen as biased (IMO).

Hi folks,

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive to serve as backup media for my laptop.
My current EHD is a Maxtor OneTouch III, that's about two years old. And it just died. This morning.

So I'm in the market.

What I've looked at so far is the following:

WD Passport: I'm leaning towards this one because what few reviews I've read say its pretty reliable. The price is also right.

Seagate eSATA: Again, also fairly decent reviews, and also priced right.

Basically, what I want is something that's pretty much just a hard drive. No frills or BS, because I have the backup programs which I need. Purists will say buy a hard drive and an enclosure and DIY, but I don't have that kind of time, as much as I'd love to do that.

Thanks,

-UnWarierMage

A:Western Digital Drivers

I really dont think you will be needing any drivers while using your HDD as an external source.... if its connected via USB then it should be plug and play same goes for connecting via external Sata
however should you need to obtain drivers then http://www.wdc.com will be the best place to start looking

I ghosted my maxtor harddrive to a 40 gig Western Digital harddrive and it will not run (the WD). Seems like I remember that WD has to have something installed on it before it will run correctly, even from scratch with a new operating system.
Is this correct, WD has to have a, what ever they (WD) calls it, to work in any computer? And if so, is this meaning I can not use a WD to clone my hard drive for futher use if need be?

I never have had any problems with a Maxtor as far as cloning or anything as far as that goes. What makes WD so complicated with their stuff?

The drive spent a year of the shelf and I just tried installing it as a secondary drive to my computer. The drive showed up and the data while still corrupt was there. When I attempted to reformat the drive it gave me an error(sorry I don't remember what the error said.) and the drive itself vanished from Disk Management. It shows up in the boot setup menu as Unknown. Is there anything I can do to salvage this drive or is it gone for good?

I wans't quite sure where to post this, but I am sure there are a large number of members that have prutchased drives between March 22, 2001 and FEBRUARY 15, 2006 and that they would be eligible to be a part of the suit. If they register and once the selttlement is approved they will be eligible to download a copy of EMC Dantz Retrospect Express version 7.5 for Windows users and version 6.1 for Mac users.

Candy said to post it here so here it is! ANd here is a link to the eligibility form:

I just thought I would mention this because I thought it was kind of strange About weeks ago I bought a Shady Digital Western new Western Digital Caviar Blue Gb HDD with Mb cache The drive failed the other day I needed to recover all of my music from the drive Because the drive would power Western Digital Shady up and read but would not hold a partition properly I was able to recover all of my files Now this is where things get weird I ran the recovery tool Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Pro By the way best bucks you will ever spend it works fantastic When the scan finished and I was looking at my files I noticed something that was out of place I bought the drive new not a refurb or any of that crap this is supposed to be Western Digital Shady a new drive The problem is that the recovery wizard found a whole bunch of office documents among other things on the drive When I bought the drive I installed it partitioned and formatted and then pushed all my music onto the drive I never put any office docs or other crap on that drive just music files So what's the deal Did western digital cut corners and put used platters in the drive and slap a new tag on it I would not be happy with that if it were the case and I doubt many other people would be Any of you remember all the trouble various computer companies have gotten into for using parts that were not factory new in the PCs they sold Would this not fit under that same type of thing You are basically lying to customers if you put a used platter in a hard drive and say that it is a factory new drive I plan to buy another new drive and before anything is moved to the drive run the recovery tool on it and see what comes up

A:Western Digital Shady

Have you confirmed that the files are actually office documents by trying to open them with office programs? Or did the recovery software just name some files as office documents? I've seen recovery software misidentify file types.

I'm in the market for a new hard drive and this year I don't know what to go for. Normally, I go for Caviar Black and everything's good. This year though, with the floods in southeast Asia, the rising prices, and the drop in quality, I am not sure what to do.

I am currently looking at 1-2 TB WD Caviar Blacks, but they do seem to have a higher than usual failure rate according to Newegg reviews.

A:USB Western Digital External HD Help

I also get this issue from time to time. Too infrequently for me to worry about it.

So rather than spending a lot of time tracking it down I simply restart the computer. When you restart (or shut down) Windows closes all working processes and "ejects" the drive before powering off. It is a safe way to disconnect the external without risk of losing data or other negative effects as far as I know.

I have read that the issue can be due to Indexing - try turning indexing off for the external, issues with Libraries, thumbnails, and of course, poorly written software.
There are a number of small programs you can download and install to explore Windows processes and turn them on and off if you want to try and track your issue down.

I plugged my new-ish hard drive in to back up my computer and realized that it was making this noise. WD20EARS - YouTube

I know it is not writing/reading because I connected only the power to test just that. It does this when it is sitting there and I was wondering if it is anything to be worried about. Like I said, this is new and is meant for backups. It would be ironic if the backup drive were to fail first (especially after little use).

Hi all,

I have a Western Digital Elements which has been working properly. This morning when I connected it to my laptop, i heard few weird 'tik tik tik' sounds when it was connected to laptop. Then the laptop could not detect my hardisk.

I tried connecting it to other laptops but the problem still persists; hardisk not detected and the tik sound.

I went to Google the solution but could not find suitable one. In the disk management, my hardisk is shown as not initialized and unknown, but there was no unallocated space at the right hand side as indicated by some other users.

Attach is the screen shot of my disk management, anyone please kindly help!

I am ready to give up my hardisk, but I just wanna get back my data inside, thanks!

A:Not initialized Western Digital Elements

It's either the hard drive or the enclosure. It's time to take the enclosure apart and try the hard drive on another usb adapter or on sata within a tower.

If a hard drive cash and it also make noise. Is anyway to remove the data from the hard drive. I tried to install it as a slave drive, but the computer not Recognize hard dive.

Thanks!!!

A:Hard Drive- Western Digital

If the drive has been damaged to the point where it cannot be accessed, then the easiest way to get the data off of it is to use a data recovery service. This would be very expensive, but in most cases, it is your only option.

You say it made a noise. What kind of a noise was it? It sounds like the motor or heads are damaged, which would definitely make data recovery your only option. However, if it is only the controller board that has failed, it is possible (although difficult) to replace the board with one from an identical, working drive.

How exactly do you have the drive set up as a slave (what channel, what jumper setting, etc.)? Does your BIOS recognize that it is connected?

Okay, I have these 2 drives chained together on an IDDE card (PCI), one is the WD and the other is the Maxtor. When they share an IDDE ribbon, they dont show up as mounted, when they are booted up one without the other on the same ribbon / cable they show up fine, even directly on the MB, nothing, independently works but the second I daisy chain them off the same IDDE cable...nothing. It came to the point where now I have them on separate IDDE channels solo working great.

Does anyone know of imcompatible drive issues between the two or am I missing something?

After some Googling of WDFME.exe I found that this is a Western Digital software pertaining to backups. When the service is running, it can consume an enormous amount of CPU and RAM. Lots of complaints. For me it was a lot. Actually enough to stall Macrium when creating an image. Sad to say I did not find any solutions to the WDFME issue other than stopping the service, which is not a permanent solution. It seems if you want to do backups and have a WD hard drive, you just have to put up with it. This also causes slow performance when using the computer.

Has anyone heard of a solution to this other than going Seagate? I'm still going to search but I thought someone here may have already been down this road.

Hello kiwijery and welcome mate what you can do is to download and make a bootable Ubuntu disk (DVD).

Download and save from here http://www.ubuntu.com/download when it has been saved burn to disk.

Set the BIOS to boot from the optical drive insert the Ubuntu disk and then when the Ubuntu OS boots up you will get an option the try or install -use the TRY option the other option will INSTALL it!! - it will then load the OS. When fully loaded in the bottom left hand corner you will find all the drives that are installed internally and externally.

Click on the on the drive you want and then proceed to open it out as in my pic. (It is a bit like opening it out in Windows) If you need to see (or save) docs pics etc plug in a drive of some sort and just copy / paste them to that - done!

NB When you have one drive open the others will be listed at the top as well as the bottom. Some files it cannot open but mostly it can all.

Any queries post back

My drive Western GB Digital Hard 500 issue is I had my old computer that I gave to my aunt to use as her old dell from died so they have had my computer for maybe year to years and I had had it fro like - years before that It was custom built not that it matters Anyways Western Digital 500 GB Hard drive the computer has been working just fine and they have not experienced any issues whatsoever until yesterday when Western Digital 500 GB Hard drive they woke up and the computer was sitting at a black screen saying select proper boot device etc etc They said when they went to bed it was on the yahoo homepage and when they woke up like this So my initial thought was maybe it got bumped and a cable came lose not the case then I tried different sata ports still nothing The drive doesn t even show up in the bios and so I ended up taking the PC back home with me and I took the Hard drive and put in an an external case I had and it spins up then starts like a whirring noise and then click click click not very loud but it s there if you hold the drive close enough to your ear and obviously the drive doesn t load up using the enclosure So I asked her had you been experiencing any issues at all I mean anything lately and she said no everything was working perfectly fine until that morning So my question is which I am pretty sure I can guess the answer but is three anything I can do to for the drive so that we can try and salvage some stuff off of it I mean she said it s not the end of the world and theres not a ton of stuff but still If I can I would like to at least try I can t find on the internet the exact sound or style of clicking it s making but it s not very loud clicking and it will spin up and then click like - times then like spin down and then back up and when it s spinning up it ll whir a little then start the - clicks or whatever The drive is a WD AAKS WD Cavier SE MFG May I also have the exact same drive just MFG date of Nov so I am not sure if doing something like that guy did in the video is feasible to try or if maybe trying to swap out the PCB s on the hard drive or will that not really do anything I am assuming the drive is toast and theres nothing that can be done but maybe someone on here has an idea or opinion https www youtube com watch v F Y BniaRXg Thanks nbsp

Hi,

I had to reinstall windows this evening and to my surprise I found that on my Western Digital Red WD30EFRX 3TB drive there was only 31.3GB found. I am not sure why this is and am concerned that my windows 7 64bit install won't be able to find all the space, or at least 1TB of it.

Looking for some thoughts on this or ideas on how to get some space back.

Cheers!

Go to start type in diskmgmt.msc hit enter. Take a screen shot of disk management and post here on your next post.
Btw I love Linux too. I use Ubuntu :D

So I've recently hooked this thing back up, the blue led on the front is lit. It is working perfectly so far except it's making this annoying chirping sound, is it supposed to do that?

A:Western Digital MyBook 500GB

No, it shouldn't chirp. I would suggest replacing your external and moving any files you have stored on your current device to the new replacement. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean it is dying, it may not be. Seagate HDDs have had chirping issues in the past and that's all it was, it didn't hinder the HDD's performance. But regardless, noises coming from an HDD are usually a sign to swap it out for a new one.
