Wifi router turning off automatically

Q: Wifi router turning off automatically

Hey, I was trying to setup an adhoc connection, but I'm faced with a dilemma.
I have internet via an ethernet cable, so I want to spread this wifi using my laptop's wifi connection.
However, whenever I connect the ethernet cable to my laptop and it's connected to the internet, the wifi light on my keyboard automatically turns red and the wifi router no longer works, hence I cannot create the adhoc connection.
After I remove the ethernet cable, the wifi light turns back on, and I'm able to create an adhoc network, but I won't have any internet to spread since, well, the ethernet cable is not plugged in...

I have an HP running on Windows 7.
Both ethernet and wifi adapters are fine.

How do I prevent my ethernet connection from shutting down my wifi router??

Thanks everyone!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hmm; IMO, Windows is attempting to keep you out of hot water.

Your PC WiFi is not intended to act like an open hotspot. I you what 'guest' connects via wifi, you should manage that in the router setup (several have the option for guest vs lan users).

You were to create this kind of network:

router = = PC - - wif - - guests
The routing table needs special entries and in effect, you would be creating a dual-home environment (the guests could just as easily be a secondary ISP).

Hello! I've read this forum great answers and help.. I am having lots of problem with my computer. The issues are:
1. Wifi turns off automatically and then cannot connect.. I have found the only way to make it work again is to disable-enable the wireless adapter but after few hours of use all networks disapear from list and cannot connect again. Any advice for this?
2. Probably not related but internet runs extremly slow on this computer. All others connected to the same network run normal. This computer loads programs fast, even heavy programs like abobe indesign or sketchup load very fast. The issue is just with internet. Same problem with all the browsers.
Downloaded Minitoolbox and can send the report. I also ran malawarebytes anti-malware and found nothing.
any advice?
Computer is an HP Envy running windows 10, i7, 8Gb RAM..

A:Wifi turning off automatically and browsing extremly slow - Help!

Ah yes!  There's a new setting deep in the Power Options applet of the Control Panel that can cause this.  Once in the Power Options applet, click Change Plan Settings -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> Wireless Adapter Settings -> Power Saving Mode.  Change the settings there to "Maximum Performance".
If you want my opinion, somebody at MS was really stupid to make this the new default in 10, but that's what they did.  I can't believe it saved enough power to amount to anything significant, and it causes folks to go crazy trying to figure it out, me included.  And it's burried so deep in the weeds, it takes a lot of digging to find it.
 Good luck.

Sounds like you need a driver update for your Wifi Adapter i would go to the ASUS site and check if they have any updates for your particular machine

If that doesn't fix the issue you might need to do a system restore to where it was working also check if the protocol has been changed from Wifi to fixed connection

Based on an article on the 'Lifehacker' website I noticed an article on how to use an old router as a repeater I was looking at eBay and noticed something a vs Using Wireless-N repeater an router old WiFi as Repeater turning called quot Wireless-N WiFi Repeater Router Signal Range Extender Amplifier Mbps quot which appears Using a Wireless-N WiFi Repeater vs turning an old router as repeater very small and is just inserted in your USB port of your laptop This begged the question At US with shipping included perhaps it is better to buy this as opposed to converting my old ''D-link Using a Wireless-N WiFi Repeater vs turning an old router as repeater DIR- quot in a repeater especially if doing so is a real hassle Hence trusting you guys here I thought I'd ask you if you think there are advantages and disadvantages with one or the other For ex a disdvantage to using my old router as a repeater is that it's not portable an advantage sort of is it's free the eBay one at this price range seems to have different models of brands unknown to me--China - - VOnets and - - LB-Liink seems to be imitating the 'D-Link' logo This nd seems to come in slightly different definitions 'USB Wifi Router AP Wireless N repeater Adapter WLAN Range Extender F' or 'USB Wireless WLAN WiFi Router AP Client Repeater Adapter SY' You opinion is valued Thanks -

I recently bought dlink D2750U WIFI ADSL modem/router, for my ADSL internet connection.

But I have now changed my ISP, who provide internet via cable(not telephone line). The ISP guy provides a cable modem(old modem) along with it.

I have connected my PC this way:
Cable modem -> Router -> PC through RJ45. I am able to access internet from my PC, but I am not able to get wifi working on the router. And I am logging onto internet through a dial up connection.
1) Please help in configuring the router to get wifi working.
2) Also, my default gateway seems to be either or blank. So, I am not able to login to the modem unless I remove the modem connection. Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong here.

Here are a few more details:
Output of ipconfig:

A:Using dlink D2750U Wifi Modem/Router As a Wifi Router

Hey Narain. The D-Link unit you have appears to be a combo unit (modem and wireless router) since it connects straight to the RJ-11 phone line. This unit won't work with an ISP that provides service by way of coax cable. The D-Link will work if you want to use DSL, but you need a cable service compatible modem or combo modem/router if you use cable service.

Sometimes when I'm using the internet, most frequently when I'm using a lot of resources, ie torrenting large files, my wifi will stop working, and eventually go limited. That is usually caused by a router, or failing networking adapter.

Hi, on one of my computers when I choose to shut down XP will go through the steps to shut down and then automatically the computer wil shut off. On my other computer I had windows 98 previously and it would shut off aumatically too, but now since I freshly installed XP it goes to a screen telling me that my computer is now safe to shut off. Can i make the computer shut off automatically again? thanks.

A:turning off automatically

Yes you can. First make sure acpi is enabled in the bios. If it is enabled, check that you are using apm. If both of these do not cure your problem go to device manager and have it show hidden devices. See if nt / apm legacy support is installed and enabled. [It defaults to disabled] If it is not installed you can install it from add / remove hardware. You will have to choose to install from a list i.e. manual installation.
This will enable automatic shutdown.

A:Turning on my netbook automatically

If you want to wakeup your PC from Power-Off condition then it has to be done in BIOS. I have heard ASUS motherboards do have that facility. Check in your BIOS settings.

If you can keep your Windows in Sleep mode, then you can run create a scheduled tasks and create an action in the task to open your browser and open a website. here is some info about creating a task to wake up a sleeping computer and to make it run a scheduled scan.

This is a bit strange, but my PC have been turning on and off by itself. Sometimes in the middle of the night it would just turn on automatically for a good 5-10 secs then it would turn off. Sometimes when I am on the computer, in the middle of doing something, the computer would again turn off or restart automatically. What is wrong with my computer? I have to unplug my power cord in order to keep the computer from turning on by itself. any help? Thanks

A:Why did my wirless automatically switched OFF then turning back ON..?

Hi Koolman511,

This appears to be a normal behavior for the 'Wireless Adapter'. It takes a while to 'save new settings', which is the reason it resets the connection. It is perfectly normal; should happen with any 'wireless adapter'.

Do reply if you have any further questions.

IS this a Dell? Some Dell computers will go into some damned low-power mode, and the power light will change to Orange. The only way I have been able to fix it, was to put in a new power supply. I've done this for 2 workstations already.

Check your Power Light, is it Green or Orange, or blinking? If the computer is in sleep mode, it will Blink on and off once a second. Other blinking patterns are error codes. Sometimes a system will just get stuck in Sleep mode and you have to force it back on.

When you are trying to wake the system, does the Monitor come back on? I've had computers stall like this.

Try changing your advanced power settings:

Usually you can get to it by Control Panel, Power, Power Scheme, and open your scheme and go into Advanced. Try changing the values for "hard Drive Power Down", change it to 45 minutes. Also, try setting it so that the Monitor does not turn off, just enable toe screensaver after 15 minutes or so, then test it, make sure it recovers from Screensaver.

I don't know if you are just telling your monitor to go off or if you are allowing the computer to go into Sleep mode, I would change the Monitor Off to "Never" and just tell it to sleep after an hour of non-use.

Just try different variations, with the monitor turning off or staying on. You can always choose a Blank Screensaver.

I am looking to replace my tired Linksys WRT54G router that is about 10 years old. I love the router, and its even better with DD-WRT on it, but I'm starting to have troubles with the wifi dropping all the connects for a couple seconds when running all my wireless devices. I have 3 smart phones, 2 tablets, 1 Chromecast, a smart TV, and Roku + a laptop or 3 in my house right now, and it seems like its getting to be a bit much for it.
I have had to completely re-flash the firmware twice this year to get the wifi working again, so I'm thinking its time for replacement.
I have been thinking about just getting the new WRT54GL for $50, but I'm also thinking it might be a good idea to upgrade the wifi technology past wireless G .
I'm wondering if my Tablet (Nexu 9), and our smartphones (Razr HD Max) along with the Chromecast will take advantage of the new wireless standards and higher speeds or not? If they will can someone recomend a decent wireless router that takes DD-WRT nicely in the sub-$100 range? Thanks!

A:Looking for new Wifi Router - Will Tablet/Smartphone take advantage of new wifi Standards?

I been programming in Android/Linux since 2010 and there is code that supports VHT is Very High Throughput. Right now the standards are HT is High Throughput .

As for DD-WRT firmware is like your overclocking your router pushing it beyond the OEM limits. I use to use DD-WRT but had quit many years ago since the routers that used that firmware would fail too much.

So best to buy a better business type enterprise router wired then you can use WiFi router as AP or just get WiFi AP(access point). To me WiFi Router is also Wired Router, but to use just a wired router and use WiFi AP through a switch is better. If one or the other goes you can easy replace them. Where as if the WiFi Router fails you would need to replace it.

If you really want to use DD-WRT then Look at Buffalo WiFi Routers some come pre-installed with DD-WRT on them. Frankly you really don't need DD-WRT today because newer routers or WiFi routers are much better built and offer much more power NPU = network processor units and 128, 256, 512, 1GB of RAM some have Dual Cores.

My guess is you have a physical switch for wifi on your laptop that is turned off, which is forcing the software in the laptop to turn off. Also make sure you laptop has power plugged in or atleast is fully charged. If it only happens on battery power, I can show later how to disable power options which might be forcing the wireless to turn off to conserve power. What model laptop do you have?

As you seem to already know the problem is the driver for your atheros wifi device.
These drivers sadly can be a major pain to dig up.

I've had luck using these before.

since i got it i installed Alfa '' AWUS036H'' wireless adapter and it was working just fine,
But few months ago i deleted something by mistake and since then the alfa adapter isn't working any more..
i've tried every thing i could to fix it but i keep failing so far,
now when i connect the adapter to the usb port it keeps turning it self on and off and the usb drive mark on the tool bar keeps flashing till i remove it again,

can any one please help me fixing this?

A:Wifi adapter keeps turning off on Asus laptop

well go to the website of the usb wifi adapter and download the latest driver/software..

uninstall the anything you see related to the usb wifi adapter.. like in your "programs and features" .. uninstall the wifi adapter drivers..

then restart your computer.. take out your usb adapter.. restart..

then leave your usb adapter unplugged and then run ccleaner if you have it and registry clean.. and then install the software/driver you downloaded from your maker of the usb wifi adapter.. then plug in your usb wifi adapter..

start with that.. thats a rough way to do it..

A:WiFi not turning ON after upgrading to Windows 10 from windo...

NiteshSuthar Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about WiFi not working on your Pavilion DV6 after the Win10 Upgrade and wanted to help. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try: HP PCs - Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet If those don't work, then what MIGHT work is what I did with my HP DV6 -- clean install from Win10 install media with the WiFi turned ON. I ran into the same problem as you, and apparently, if you UPGRADE the DV6 to Win10, the WiFi button no longer works -- at least, that is what I ran into. The clean-install will erase the partition containing Win10, removing everything in it, so you need to save off any data you want to retain. You can create Win10 install media from this link: Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help Good LuckI am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.========================================================================If you feel my suggestions helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol to say thanks! If they helped resolve your issue, please click "Accept As Solution" to help others find similar information.

Actually my wifi adapter can catch all other wifi signal except my wifi router.

A:my notebook wifi adapter don't get my wifi router

There are several resons.1. The wifi signal might be too weak at the point where the computer is.2. Other device radiation/signals might be blocking it.3. Your router signal might be hodden (check EWS of router).4. Signal broadcasting might have been turned off on router. Since other signals are found on the computer, there shouldnt be a issue with your couputer.

Hello I am a bit of a hard time with routers on one network IP + dynamic Issues = with ADSL Wifi Router Router and unfortunately as things stand now they both have to be there So I just got ADSL and the only modem option available to me was one with a -port wired router I hooked that up into my existing network of about computers laptops and desktops which Wifi Router + ADSL Router = Issues with dynamic IP is connected by another -port WiFi router I started out with my only Wifi Router + ADSL Router = Issues with dynamic IP goal of hooking of these computers to the internet after I got the DSL by some MAC filtering configured in the WiFi router But having the DSL modem router has created another issue I am using separate IP gateways for both the routers which are in the same subset I can connect to both of them from all my machines The problem is I don t have any control over which computer connects to what router I am trying to avoid setting each PC up with a static IP that needs internet access Here is my setup in more detail My ADSL router is and my WiFi router is and both have the subnet My ADSL connection has dynamic IP and the modem router is connected into a LAN port on the WiFi router I have tried disabling DHCP on the modem router and changed my WiFi router IP to that of the modem which was counter productive to no avail Someone mentioned MAC address cloning but I am not sure if it will work in this setup Since I configured this I am seeing quite a few IP conflicts which are probably my fault as I didn t check when I was setting up static IP on computers that needed internet access I just want these routers to work in harmony if possible Can I just use one of them as a DHCP server I do not want to use static IP for any computer whether or not it connects to the internet Right now I am using it for computers that want access to the internet by guiding them to right gateway and the computers that need not be connected just have auto IP configured I would rather use MAC filters for this I am going to stop typing now before I dream about this mess I have on my hands Any help here will be welcome Thank You nbsp

I'm using an HP pavilion desktop, and an apple airport. Whenever I connect my desktop to the router, it stops sending its signal out. It simply stops appearing on the list of networks. It comes back if I restart it, but then will disappear again after 10 or so minutes. I'm using windows 7, and a Belkin USB adapter. The problem appeared after doing a factory reset. While it is not broadcasting, there is a green light still on on the front of the airport, and I can see other wireless networks.
Other computers, phones, and ipads have no effect on the router. Only the HP is shutting it down.

Shot in the dark. Try turning off UPNP support on the router. UPNP allows the the client computer to control the router.

Win 7 Home premium:

When I boot into windows, WiFi signal will spin as if it is looking for a site; however it will not connect. It shows a list of Wifi routers [My building supplies free Wifi]. There are three possible connections that I can use and a listing of over a dozen secured routers from ATT and Comcast. I check 'Connect automatically'' on the best signal router, but upon rebbot/start-up, I have to select the router and check again.

I have looked at all threads and found no possible fix.

I have a Linksys wrt320N router hooked into my desktop. It will be used for my home laptop, and to enable my Panasonic BD85 (Panasonic supplied dongle) and Panasonic 50V10 TV (Linksys wet610N gaming adapter) to communicate with the internet. Presently, only the laptop is sometimes being used wirelessly (but most of the time it is directly hooked to the internet via ethernet connected to my modem), while the other two haven't been wireless engaged yet. The question is since the wireless will only be used intermittently (and is easy to get to), what will happen, if anything, if I were to turn the router on and off as needed? Will doing this cause the router's or adapters' settings to change causing me to re-set them?

Depending on how you have your router configured.
No the router settings are flashed into memory.
How ever power bumps will cause the router to lose conectivity with the modem occasionally.

A:Turning a wireless router into a repeater?

If the router supports it, then yes. If not, then no. Simple
You may be able to use some custom firmware like OpenWRT to get WDS support.

In any case, WDS does not support WPA encryption so your repeated wireless network will be much less secure.

A:Can't Automatically Connect To Home WiFi

Another Problem Found that the Trouble Shooter detects is, "A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken."
The above problem just means you don't have the Ethernet cable plugged in. If you do have the Ethernet plugged in, then you have a problem though!
For the above problem and the wireless issue I would do a System Restore to before Skype was installed, and see if that fixes it.

It is a lot of articles about how to automatically connect to ad hoc networks at Windows 7/Vista (since Windows Vista you can't do this), it uses a windows profiler to perform this operation, but I'm afraid this solution is not suitable for you, cause actually you will have to run the task every fixed period of time.

Yeah.... In your Netowrk and Sharing you'll find a list of recent wi-fi connections. Forget the one that you'ld liketo connect to, then reconnect, enter the password and check the box that says "Connect Automatically". I'm sure I'm getting alot of syntax wrong but, that's the general idea.

I'm new to 7 (all my desktops are XP Home).

With XP, the OS just connects automatically to my home wireless network.

However with this netbook, I have to do it manually everytime I reboot - it's a real pain.

Not sure if this OS, hardware or both.

Can anyone advise ?

I've looked at services.msc WiFi service and it's set to automatic already ....

PS Also, is there a way to get 7 to boot straight to desktop, without having to click on user icon or enter password ?

The reason these 2 are important to me is that this netbook is basically a music server, so when I come in from work etc., I'd like to just power up the netbook then walk off and play stuff via my network (Squeezebox) players

A:windows 7 not automatically connecting to wifi!

Welcome to Seven Forums,

You might want to check out the Realtek site for the latest driver for your Wi-Fi adapter.

Also, see if it helps disabling the Power saving mode of your Realtek adapter in Device Manager, see image attached.

I take my Windows 8 laptop to several boutiques that I'm building websites for and it's a bit of a pain to have to find the appropriate hot spot from the list shown at each store and enter the password for it. I'd like to just open the lid and have the laptop automatically connect to the right hotspot for this store.

Any way to do that?

A:Connecting automatically to WiFi hot spots

That should be the default behavior as long as you're saving the password for the hotspot. I forget the exact wording, but there should be a setting on each connection like, "Connect automatically if in range".

Hi,  Wifi connection was getting disconnected sometimes after booting the system. When I checked the Device Manager, Wifi driver was uninstalled. So, I installed SP65649 and I was able to connect with Wifi. After some 10 minutes, the connection got abruptly stopped (I have not restarted the system; I was in middle of my work).Wifi driver got automatically uninstalled. Could you please help me with this request.

A:Wifi driver getting uninstalled automatically

@SPSamy, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  Generally speaking when you have any driver getting dropped and uninstalled like that, it is due to bad hardware. If you can please post back with your full Model and Product number.  WIth this I can provide you with some more information based on your system specs.  HP Notebook PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? Please post back when you have a chance. Thanks again for posting and have a great day.

Hi, I have recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 on my lenovo z470. Recently I have noticed that when I switch on my laptop with AC power (with battery removed), wifi does not automatically start up. I have to manually switch on the wifi through the hot key fn + F5. However, this does not happen if I run on battery without AC power. The wifi will have automatically started and connected. I have untick the network adapter properties of "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. I have also ensured the WLAN AutoConfig is set to automatic. These do not solve the problem. What could have gone wrong?

A:Wifi does not automatically start up when running on AC

Welcome to the forum deddy.

Do you have the latest drivers from the manufacturer for your WiFi adaptor ? The machine was running Windows 7 before so will probably need compatible drivers to run it on Windows 8.

Hey guys I have this old Linksys WRT G V in my room Downstairs we have a Wireless point. spare router access Turning an into a DSL router Right now i have a wireless card in my computer and it takes up a PCI slot My problem is is that because of the size of my video card i only have PCI slot that is usable So Turning a spare router into an access point. right now i have my Creative Sound card Sitting in its box because I can t sit it in the other PCI slot on my mobo Vid card blocking What I m trying to do here is make my wireless router receive the wireless connection from the DSL router downstairs and act as an access point so i can plug in a lan cable to it and then to my Comp I have been trying this for hours today and googling for answers to no avail I m sure there must be a way Most people tell me that the only way this router would be an access point is if it was hard wired to the DSL router I find that to be absurd because the reason behind wireless is so you don t have feet of cord strung about Any of you guys have any idea how to do this I can t seem to find any instructions online and would much appreciate your help Thanks in advanced -Brendan nbsp

I play Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360.

I have my Xbox connected to my computer via ethernet and Windows ICS and my computer is connected to the internet via a Linksys WUSB54g wireless adapter. We have a Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router. Every once in a while, I'd say once an hour, when I'm in a game I get kicked off my router and it appears that everyone leaves the match. I can't use the internet on my computer afterwards either. So, I must manually restart (plug and unplug) my router so that I may get reconnected to the internet. I looked in the settings and I have UPnP enabled, and I can't seem to find a setting relating to this matter. I can play any other game online on my Xbox and I'll never get this problem. Any help would be highly appreciated!

1.  Right click on wi-fi icon.
2.  Click on Open Newtwork and Sharing Center.
3.  Click on Wi-Fi (wi-id).
4.  Click on Wireless Properties
5.  Click Security Tab

I am having trouble getting an HP laptop to automatically connect to our home wifi. It won't connect either on start up nor after it has woken from sleep mode. Both times it has to be manually connected.
I have checked the 'automatically connect' in the wireless networks properties box but it seems to uncheck itself after it shuts down.
This is the 2nd router that it won't connect to whereas all the other wireless computers etc we have have no problem connecting to the router
If someone would be kind enough to suggest a fix I would be much appreciative.

You said that you "manually connect it". What do you do?

I read bunch of articles on how to remove a Wifi profile.. However I have problem with networks which aren't in profiles (I only have 1 profile and its my home network)..

I have currently 7 networks when I click on the Wifi icon in the task bar. they are from people living around me I guess. They all have "Connect Automatically" checkbox ticked. If I untick it - it goes back once I move my mouse away.

I cant right-click on it and there is no other options. And as I already said - these aren't in the Wifi profile which you can manipulate through netsh.

Windows 8.1 Pro with all latest updates..

I am pretty sure I saw other people complains about the same issue without much of the results..

Any ideas how to uncheck Connect Automatically for ever and ever?

A:All WiFi networks in range are Connect Automatically.

Unless you have the security passphrase, you are not going to connect to any of those Access Points. All it is showing is available Wifi Access Points that are available to connect to.

I have windows 8. I set my computer to connect to my network automatically, but I have to log in every time. That is fine, I can live with that. But let's say my network is called AARON. Well now when I connect, and hover my mouse over the connection it says AARON 1,2,3,4,5,6,7........etc. Like every day I connect it's adding another number. I'm up to 50 right now. And forgetting the network does not make this go away. If it matters, my network is "hidden"

A:Wifi won't connect automatically, shows 50 sessions?

The same kind of thing has happened to me since I upgraded to Win 8. Our WiFi too is hidden. I have no trouble connecting each time. But if I check "Connect automatically", Windows says, "Cannot connect to this network"?even though it's just connected to it.

Windows is not adding numbers after our network name, though. If it were, I wouldn't try to fix it. It'd be too exciting seeing how high the numbers would go. Of course we live in the suburbs; where you live, more interesting forms of entertainment may be available.

A:Solved: Turning router into JUST a wireless access point

What speeds do you get when connected directly to the DSL modem/router?

What speeds do you get with the same computer connected to the Linksys via ethernet?

Use something like to test.

If they are not about the same a cable is bad, a connection is bad (loose, oxidized) or the ethernet switch part of the Linksys is failing. Of course, try different ports on the Linksys.
