Western Digital hard drives: The differences between Black and Blue Series

Q: Western Digital hard drives: The differences between Black and Blue Series

For a while now, I've been curious to know what the differences are in the Western Digital Caviar Series.
So far as I know, Black is high performance, Green is eco-friendly and slow, but I'm not sure what the Blue series has to offer, other than a lower price tag.
Can anyone clearify what the techinical differences are between Black and Blue? For high performace reasons, I bought the Black series for my tower, but what would I have been missing out on had I gone for the Blue series?

Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In theory, the Black is supposed to be the faster drive. In actuality, there isn't much between them. Speed rather depends on platter size and cache - The Black drives are either 32 or 64Mb cache, while the Blue drives top out at 32Mb.
Black drives carry a five year warranty, while Blue drives are three years which is probably of more significance.

This build will be for my 77 year old mother who lives in another state and I am trying to build this as stable and problem free preventative mode as best as I can with the understanding that any hardware can fail at any time.

Anyway, NewEgg is having both their Blue and Black WD 1TB hard drives on sale that goes off of sale after tomorrow. I know Black is often the choice due to build quality and 5 year warranty. However, the Blue would really help budget wise because every dollar counts and it sees many people have had good success with the Blue.

Which do you think is better? I'm just wondering because I've recently been looking at both the Western Digital 2 TB external hard drives and the Seagate 3 TB external hard drives and trying to compare them in terms of features, benefits, reliability, and price.

I'm traditionally a Western Digital loyalist and have been using them for years, but lately I'm considering trying Seagate due to the fact that at the moment they are higher in capacity than the Western Digital drives.

Look no further than a solid state drive for breakneck speed. If a large-capacity drive for storage is what you're after, however, traditional spinning hard drives are still the best bet in terms of price per GB. And if you...

On a more interesting note, Seagate is already shipping 8TB HDD-s to its select customers, with 10TB ones to follow.

Besides, nothing beats the current 6TB Enterprise offer from Seagate anyway, in terms of price+performance+capacity. Let Western Digital lag behind as it does

Western Digital silently updated two of its Raptor series drives: the 36GB WD360ADFD and 74GB WD740ADFD 10,000RPM models have been blessed with doubled buffers to 16MB each. The performance specifications have improved over the 8MB cache models along with a slight increase in power consumption.

Among the performance updates are increases in 'Buffer To Disk' sustained transfer rates of 84MB/sec up from the previous models' 72MB/sec as well as lower overall average seek times.

I was thinking of getting a Western Digital 750 GB Green Power hard drive. Does anyone know if they are any good? One of the main reasons I'm thinking of getting one is they are supposed to run cooler since they are supposed to be energy efficient. The cooler it runs, maybe the longer it will last. One thing that worries me, though, is that the energy efficient features might make them more complicated and thus more likely to break.

A:Western Digital Green Power Drives

I just bought a 500 a couple days ago. It uses 40% less energy. Otherwise, it is indistinguishable from any other WD drive. All drive manufacturers strive to reduce power consumption, especially for laptop drives. It just so happens that this is now "PC" and they can advertize that they are socially responsible while doing what they would have done anyway. It's like all the soft drinks that added "No Caffeine" to their labels when reducing caffeine became popular--most of them never had caffeine in the first place (fruit sodas, in particular), so why not make a standard feature a selling point?

Has anyone purchased a Western Digital Passport portable hard drive recently? The reviews I'm reading are saying that they ship with software installed that cannot be deleted and that mounds a virtual CD drive when connected. I'm wondering if perhaps these reviewers just aren't savvy in deleting partitions using 3rd party utilities or if there really is something in the firmware of the drive that causes this behavior.

Or does anyone recommend another brand for a portable drive? I need a portable drive because an external power source is not practical in this case.

I dont know about that but.............they have changed the interface to where it plugs in though.
So basically you cant take it out of the case...pull off the usb adapter and toss it in PC...or just toss it in your old enclosure.
I remember reading about it here in the forums a few months ago.
IMO this is a big deal versatility is now taken away.
My next purchase will be a seagate......only after a little research ofcourse to make sure they havent done what WD has.

For whats its worth..My hdd in my laptop right now started out as a WD passport...I took the seagate out and put it in the WD enclosure..complete with Vista still on it as well as the recovery partition.
I still use it to back up files...I just copy them over to folders I created great.

Also to consider in regard to seagate is people like the backup software if you decide to use it that is.
People really dont like the WD software

Countering the rampant development of fast and expensive solid state storage, Western Digital has officially released the fifth generation of its VelociRaptor hard drives. The series itself hasn't changed drastically from 2008, but it does include new 450 and 600GB models, along support for Sata 6Gbps and a larger 32MB cache. According to WD, the updated drives can load data up to 15% faster than their predecessors with the same 10,000RPM spin speed.

I just ordered this drive from TD, and I got to wondering if there is anything that I need to do different for it to be able to use the full capacity of the drive? I will probably partition the first 100GBs for adding another OS to my secondary rig, and the remainder in multiple partitions for archiving data.

A:Western Digital 1TB Black Caviar

There isn't anything special that you should have to do. As long as it your box recognizes the drive, you should get all of the capacity. A 1TB drive will show up as 931GB to Windows 7.

Just received this drive today. Previously using a WD 320 SATA 2 drive which works perfectly. Wanted to use the new drive being it has a 32 bit buffer but having problems. I cannot complete any install with Vista because it is always looking for drivers. Motherboard is a KSI K9A2 CF. Tried everything I can think of but really like to use this drive as a boot drive.. The drive partitions and formats without a problem, just will not let you use it as a boot drive. Any ideas..

If you're saying/thinking that Vista is looking for drivers for that hard drive, that's not the case as it's not a requirement. Unless the hard drive is bad or damaged, your issues lay elsewhere.

- Check that the SATA cable is correctly hooked up, same for power connections.
- Check that the hard drive is connected to the correct SATA ports and that the ports are properly configured through the BIOS.

What Vista "might" be looking for are the MB's SATA/RAID drivers.

Are you using RAID? Is the SATA port the HD is on set to RAID? Again, check the BIOS settings. Unless you?re using RAID, you should be set to IDE/SATA. Check your manual though.

And for your reference, I just moved from 4 WD 320gig HD's to two 500Gig Caviar Blacks. One containing Vista Ultimate x64, the other containing Windows 7 x64. No special required to install the OS.

OK, I hope you guys can give me some advice here. Just installed my new WD Black Caviar 1TB.
What I would like to know is how to configure now? I currently have 3 Hard drives. 1 x 320gb Seagate Baracuda, 1 x 320gb WD, and then the 1TB drive. Currently I have three OS set up. Windows 7 7100 64bit, 7127 64bit, and 7100 Chinese 32bit. These are all on my Seagate HD. My data and everything else is on the 320gb WD.
Obviously the 1TB drive is the fastest, so I would like to utilize it fully. Should I move my default OS here? Should I partition it first? Or should I keep my data on this?
Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

A:Western Digital Black Caviar 1TB

What I usally do is this, and for the record I just bought that same drive from newegg for $90.00 so im stoked for its arrival!

First I always partition the drive in 2

Give your first partition something like 400 gigs and the d partition 600
I only install OS and Apps to the C drive all DATA, Images, saves, documents, pictures, music reside on D

so when I reformat I dont lose my data just the apps and its a much faster re-install.

I also leave in a secondary Drive or an external drive and use that for backups of the D important data so if one drive dies your set.

I don't do any mirror because of costs, and speed issues (no im not setting up raid 0, or 5 on a home PC) my method works and is cheap done multiple recoveries this way.

Always do a fresh install never upgrade over something if possible!

When installing new devices remove all refrences to old devices PRIOR to installing new hardware.

Thats all I can tell you. Been living by this for years and no problems since.

While Defraggler worked great in XP and was superior to XP's native defragger, I've found that it doesn't play well with Win 7 and caused far more problems than it corrected. It also was as slow as a dead turtle with four broken legs. Win 7's native defragger works much, much better than Defraggler and it's all I use now. I have it set on my computer to automatically defrag my HDDs (SSDs should never be defragged) every Wednesday during the wee hours (when I'm normally sawing logs). I check to see how fragmented my drives are every once in a blue moon and they are almost always at 0% (once in a while one of them may get up to a whopping 1%).

To get to Win 7's defragger, just hit the Windows key and type "defrag" (without the quotes).

Don't overlook bad or cheap ram. That can cause corrupt data on the hard drive too.

As for suing WD, that's pointless. If the drive is still under warranty they'll replace it once you've tested it with their own diagnostic software to confirm the drive is faulty. If it's out of warranty, WD are not liable anyway.

Bottom line is, you can't blame the drive until you've tested it with the maker's software.

A:Hard Drive- Western Digital

If the drive has been damaged to the point where it cannot be accessed, then the easiest way to get the data off of it is to use a data recovery service. This would be very expensive, but in most cases, it is your only option.

You say it made a noise. What kind of a noise was it? It sounds like the motor or heads are damaged, which would definitely make data recovery your only option. However, if it is only the controller board that has failed, it is possible (although difficult) to replace the board with one from an identical, working drive.

How exactly do you have the drive set up as a slave (what channel, what jumper setting, etc.)? Does your BIOS recognize that it is connected?

I have tried to install a Western Digital My Book 2 750GB external hard drive on my friends Toshiba Windows Vista laptop. It does not show as being on the laptop other than when you go to safety remove hardware. I have successfully installed it on my Toshiba Windows Vista laptop without any problems. I have been to the WD website and downloaded software which had to go straight on to the hard drive. Obviously I could not do this on my friends laptop but could on mine, with success. However this has not helped for my friend. Can anyone help please. Johanne

Can someone tell me the easiest way to solve this problem?

I have a western digital external hard drive that has just stopped working.

I was accessing it through a 3.5 USB 2.0 to SATA external hard drive box.

I ordered a new external hard drive box and that works fine, however the hard drive still does

not show up on my laptop.

I have concluded that the hard drive has died.

Is there any way to recover this data? Do I need another external hard drive?

Is there a way to transfer the data from the bad hard drive to a memory stick.

Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

I hope this the right spot for this post, if not I apologize. I have a my book 1tb extremal hard drive and due to the mini usb piece falling off, I had no choice but to take it out and hook it up in my computer. I have windows 7 and disk manager recognizes it as unallocated. If I assign it a drive later it says that it needs to be formatted before I can use it which is NOT what I wanna do. Going to it's properties, it recognizes it as a gpt disk. How do I get it to ntfs without deleting anything? Or at least be able to use it, still without deleting anything. Before it messed up I only had about 30 gigs left and everything on it is very important. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Files that are not backed up are files you do not expect to keep.

Why was it initialized as GPT?

Try recovering the files or partition table with Testdisk (for Windows). Do not run chkdsk, or make any other changes to the drive until your files are recovered or they will be gone forever.

Some other possible tools (it may be tril and error until something sees the files). Test a file before you recover them all in case the program is not getting the real files.

Then I changed the power supply in the system( it is an AT power supply) and starting up the hard drive makes much noise powering up and only autodetects half the time. I rechecked the cables, everything seems fine. Additionally, the power supply came with a green cord hanging off the power switch button, and this cord has a circle at the end. I would assume this is a ground but there is no place to put it. What should I be checking first?

WD had a bad period for a couple of years in the race with Maxtor, but their products have improved to the level they once had, since last year.

If you connect the sata drive with USB2, it will be horribly slow.

If your computer has an e-sata connection, buy an e-sata external disk and the performance will be equal to internal drive.

There are also e-sata adapter boards to put into your computer, allowing you to connect the e-sata drive.

Just something to think about.

It's getting really annoying. Is there any way to fix it?

A:Western Digital Hard drive disconnects....

Tried another SATA cable just in case?
If you disconnec the SATA cable and reconnect it is fine for a while right?
How often does this occur?

See if the drive is still under warranty at
Typically the warranty is 3 years. You can look it up on the site with the serial number on the drive.
If it is, and you feel it should be replaced WD is really good about that.

A:Western Digital 1TB External Hard Drive Failing

Have you tried plugging the external into some other port on the PC?

You need to go to WD web site and download their disk tool for that particular drive. It will have a couple of tests. Try the simple quick one first.

And look up the return procedures for the drive at the WD web site if it fails the drive tests.

You might want to make an image of the drive with a tool like Macrium to preserve whatever is now on it in the current state.

S.m.a.r.t logs hardware failures at hardware level. That disk is dead.

Can you try booting and then connecting it afterwards? If it is a SATA disk it will get recognized eventually, but might also freeze the PC.

I usually use external enclosures to do these things (file transfers from dying HDDs), as the enclosure's interface board does shield the PC from the bunch of errors that would freeze or lock it up if connected directly.

Look Shawn I ma no expert but have you tried DISKPART to see if it is in there - I sometimes have this problem and pretty well all the time it will show up in that.

Nb ""
"****" is just to show the letters to be typed not the quotation marks

Start > type "cmd" in search > right click the cmd at the top of the Start menu > left click "run as administrator" > let it work to a balck and white DOS screen > type in "diskpart" > Enter > DISKPART will come up > type "list disk" > Enter it will show all the drives (disks) on or in the machine.

If you know how to snip or capture the screen post back the screen.

I have a Western Digital external hard drive model: WD3200B007-RGB. Recently after a Windows update and reboot the computer would no longer recognize the hard drive. A reboot tried to reinstall the hard drive but could not find a valid driver and searching support on the WD website found that WD no longer supports Legacy hard drives. I have tried two other computers with no success (assuming that, of course, those have also received the most recent Window update). I am running on Vista on one computer and XP Pro on the other two. I absolutely have to have access to that drive - does anyone know where to get a new driver? This is a firewire drive.

I recently got the hard drive in my Acer V3 laptop replaced since the first one had failed, and this new hard drive seems significantly slower than the old hard drive. The first hard drive was a Hitachi and was constantly getting anywhere from 20 to 60 seconds to boot to desktop, whereas this hard drive, a WDC WD7500BPVT, is taking anywhere from 60 to 90 seconds to boot to desktop and then another 30 seconds to finish booting everything. Now this hard drive was a clean reinstall of Windows 7, so I don't understand why it's taking so long to boot. I only have about 80 GB on this 750 GB hard drive, and I don't have many programs running at startup either. Why is the old Hitachi beating this new replacement hard drive? They're both 5400 RPM 750 GB hard drives, with a SATA speed of 3 GB.

A:Western Digital Hard Drive is Slow- 2 minute boot times

Not good. Very slow drive can mean a failing drive. And yes, I know it's "new" -- but I had three WD drives fail me last year and one was only a few months old. If you can, go to the WD website, download their drive health checking utility (sorry, forgot the name) and run it on the drive. It's not destructive but it will check the health of the drive. IF it's only a few weeks old, and it's already failing, you should be able to get a replacement through the warranty for free.

So I bought a used 2 TB Hard drive and it supposedly was only used a couple of times and I got a good deal.

I plugged it in and the software was installed successfully but it doesn't show up in the explorer with a drive letter. Now when I go to the device manager it does show up but I am not able to format it or give it a letter etc. Also like I said in the title it doesn't have a fat32 or NTFS File System.

The hard drive I right clicked is the one I am talking about. If you need more pics let me know.

I would appreciate if you could help me get this external hard drive to work so it is viewable etc.

A:Western Digital 1021 2TB Hard Drive - No file system and can't format?

I will assume you do not want any of the data that might be on the drive.

In the lower section of the Disk Management window there are 3 'boxes' next to Disk 2.
Right click on that middle (hatched) box and click "delete Volume".

Then Right click on the first box (System Partition) and click "delete Volume".

There should now be just unallocated space for the whole drive (black box). Right click on that and choose "Format".

Let us know if that will work.
