Preferred Solution: Computer Freezing For Minutes At A Time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5128 running Windows 7. My computer has been randomly freezing for months now, whether it's with Mozilla Firefox or Chrome open, or if I'm playing League of Legends. It's usually with Mozilla Firefox open. I haven't been able to pinpoint the problem, and some help would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer. When FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste. This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Please download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan. Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool.

Open your browser and go to Downloads, then click on the Junkware Removal Tool to install it.

Click on Run to initiate the installation.

To avoid potential conflicts, temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall. You will want to be offline when you do this.

Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select Run as Administrator.

The tool will open and start scanning your system.

Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open. Copy and this and then post this in your topic.

A:Computer keeps freezing after a few minutes

Being able to run in Safe Mode is a solid sign that the issue is most likely with a device driver.

As for the registry "fixes" we here at TechSpot tell everyone to avoid using them because they cause more harm than good.

Have you tried a Windows Repair?

Every few minutes the computer will freeze for about 20-30 seconds, allowing me to move my mouse and minimize the current screen I'm in but that is all. I can hit Con/Alt/Del and then just close the popup screen that brings up and all is fine again. Any ideas on what the problem is?

I've run adaware and spybot every day to make sure the Comp stays as clean as possible, but this is getting very annoying.

I can post a HJ log if needed. Thanks!

About a week ago, my comp started freezing while playing games (chiefly World of Warcraft)
Since then, it's become more and more frequent, and is now crashing just while using Firefox.

I've scanned for viruses/malware/spyware etc. etc., Updated my video drivers. Done a system restore, and It's not overheating.

Haven't added anything recently that could cause this, only things I can think of are that Crap Cleaner may have deleted something it shouldn't have, or the actual card itself is damaged. (Can dust do that? :S)

Help?

And now when i go to leave my computer just playing music or sitting there for about 10-20 minutes it just locks up, i can move my mouse but i cant click on anything and shortly after my mouse stops moving also. Also sometimes but not often my computer just freezes up when i open Firefox. And always freezes when i try to start my FNA firewall (i uninstalled it, now im just using windows firewall)

When i have an active program running like AVG scanning my computer it doesnt freeze but 10 minutes after it stops my computer freezes and its driving me crazy.

ANY help would be much appreciated.
Temps for my system are around 45c for cpu and system according to nvdia monitorview and for my nforce (assuming thats my video card) is 55c as to my understanding anything under 70c is good

You might want to take the web site as knowing what they are talking about, and try some different RAM.

Just had this problem start today. Basically, I'll be using my computer, and it is working fine, and then it'll try to load something and freeze up.

Some background...

Was using this afternoon, had a problem loading a page. After a series of turning off and on, logging back in, experiencing the same problem, I finally got to the point where the system restored to a time where it previously worked, I'm guessing about yesterday morning based on what was on my desktop.

At one point when I loaded up, it ran a disc check. I have run malwarebytes and don't have any viruses. Please help/advise! Thank you in advance.

A:Computer freezing after using for a couple minutes

I ran a health check and in the system service checks, it failed an Abnormally Terminated Services Check. Everything else checks out.

Freezing lasts between 30 - 60 seconds then I can move the mouse or type for approx. 5 seconds before it freezes again. Could my HD be getting to hot or *please say no to this one* possibly something wrong with it?

Over the last 12 hours, I've noticed that when I start up my laptop, about 30 to 60 minutes later it will suddenly freeze and I can't move the mouse cursor or anything, forcing me to shut down the computer by pressing the power button.

I checked online and at first I thought it might be a hardware issue, but when running Vista in Safe Mode, the problem disappears. Some of the things I've tried include running a Malware program, doing a system restore, but the problem persists.

A:Old Old Computer Fails After ~6 Minutes Logon Time

It could certainly be the power supply. Try a new one and post your results.

If you believe it's because the PC can't handle WinXP, this isn't the case.Click to expand...

It may be able to handle XP but you'll have a much better running computer if you switch to Windows 2000. You're really meeting the bare minimum, which, imho, leads to a very unpleasing experience.

I am running Windows bit Yesterday my laptop froze and would not unfreeze I eventually used the power button to restart it Since then my computer has been freezing in this manner a few minutes after starting Seems related to Chrome freezing startup. Computer after minutes up Computer freezing minutes after startup. Seems related to Chrome Programs that I was running during the original failure are VLC utorrent Chrome and possibly Medieval Total War also there are likely others that I do not generally interact with running in the background I have noticed that whenever I launch Chrome now consistent after reinstalling it causes the computer to freeze up like this upon launching I have never had any similar problems with this computer before Computer freezing minutes after startup. Seems related to Chrome and have been using all these programs without problems for awhile Sadly I have no restore points I'm all for any solution that involves never using any of these again however I am at the point where formatting is looking like the only solution This is very undesirable as I do not have a working recovery partition hasn't worked since adding an ubuntu partition nor do I have a Windows disc as this came pre-installed with no CD I was under the impression that this could be malware related but so far my scans turn up nothing although they cannot fully complete before the computer fails as it does I tried AVG spyware doctor and adaware but only spyware doctor gets anywhere near finishing Anything I can do Anyone seen anything similar

A:Computer freezing minutes after startup. Seems related to Chrome

for a quick scan use malwarebytes the quick scan takes only about 15 minutes,
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
you can also use it in safe mode.

Win 7 Home Premium x64. Three users logged in. The computer will all of a sudden stop responding for minutes at a time. Everything stops Keyboard, mouse, sidebar clocks, etc. Will then get short bursts of activity. If I am lucky to get it to shutdown, it will BSOD while shutting down.

Sometimes this happens on wake from sleep and sometimes when watching videos (youtube), playing Minecraft.

I have attached 2 of the most recent files in minidump

How To Find Drivers:

Quote:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

The computer in question crashes every time a game (WoW, UT2004, Black and White 1&2 all tested) is loaded, after about 2-4 minutes. Usually works fine on other programs. Crashed once on load of a youtube page.

The crash goes like this: freezes, sound starts looping, screen goes black, then monitor shows it is receiving no signal. The sound looping does not occur in WoW.

Up to date drivers for both video and sound, ram passes memtest, PSU rated for 850 watts (way more than this needs).

Tried unplugging the sound card to see if it was the problem, and now it won't boot except in safe mode...

any suggestions?

A:Computer always crashes a few minutes after loading any game, and one other time.

Ok, plugged sound back in, now it boots.

Still won't play games though. Going to try uninstalling the card again.

A:Computer freezing a few minutes after boot. Works fine in safe mode + networking

Hello,

Try clean booting the PC and see if we maybe narrow down what is causing the freezing.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

Once we have the freezing issue resolved you can then uninstall Norton using there uninstaller. Norton Uninstaller

Hello S1Lv3R_Sh4rK,I see that you have an HJT log posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/220386/crazy-wormvirus/ I have removed your bump post from it for reasons I'll outline later. We do not allow more than one topic for the same computer and the same issue as this causes confusion, and in this case may make the disinfection process more difficult. This leaves you with a choice:1) Have this thread reopened and the HiJack This log topic deletedOR2) Keep this thread closed and wait for assistance in the HiJack This log forum. Please note that that forum is VERY busy. While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, you wouldn't want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it, would you? Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. Please send a Private Message indicating your choice.Assuming you wish assistance in the HiJack This forum, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.Orange Blossom

A:Computer is freezing at random time

Hello Tavish,

Is Internet Explorer affected, as well?

This could be Virus or Malware related.

Are you experiencing odd behavior anywhere else on your system?

When did you first notice the issue with GC?

Did you downloaded anything just before the issue started?

Accept a popup update, or open email from an unknown source?

Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. If you're not finding any malware, read Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware. There are reasons for slowness besides malware - i.e. disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential.

A:Computer freezing (Been doing it for a long time...)

Why would you replace the hard drive, is it defective? Are you getting a blue screen crash, is the computer just locking up?

A:Help please! computer freezing 2-10 seconds at a time :(

A computer that freezes is usually caused by overheating or a failing Power Supply Unit. Turn off the computer and take the side off and blow out all fans with a can of compressed air. Look at the label for the PSU and report the Make, Model and Wattage. Start the computer up and make sure all fans are spinning.
Also try a Clean Boot.

I have two issues that need to be addressed and I think that they are connected in some way The first problem is that my computer has begun freezing for long periods of time when I load things It most recently happened when I tried to load a new page on DeviantArt but it has happened keeps periods freezing of long Computer for time when doing things Computer keeps freezing for long periods of time as simple as opening a new tab in google chrome or trying to alt tab to skype The freeze either lasts a few minutes or much longer When it lasts longer then or so minutes I decide to force shutdown my computer The second issue that I am encountering is that task managers claims I am using of Computer keeps freezing for long periods of time my disk space Computer keeps freezing for long periods of time sometimes when I have very few things open Usually the culprit is System or Antimalware Executable two services I can't turn off without shutting down my computer or making it unstable but sometimes it says I am using of my disk space when the app service using the most disk space is using a measly gb s or lower I have tried multiple solutions to this problem including turning off Windows autoupdates and allocating more memory to certain things and disabling Super fetch and Windows search These are the specs on my Asus laptop Something I haven't mentioned is that I dual-boot Ubuntu but I haven't used it in some time After upgrading to Windows the BIOS reverted back to its default so I just kind of forgot about it but I never reallocated the space that I had initially allocated to Ubunutu The freezing issue started a while back and I haven't found any viruses on the computer nor can I find any programs through the control panel that I think might be causing the issue The disk usage issue has as far as I know been a problem since I first got the laptop I'm not sure if that in conjunction with something else is causing my laptop to freeze

I travel to Colorado from Texas frequently. The last three times I have made the trip, at some point when I change times zones, my 640XL displays a time that is 15 minutes faster than actual time. When this happens, it also will not automatically check emails so that I have to do it manually. The only solution I have found so far is to completely reset the phone and start over as if it is a new phone, uploading everything manually. This takes me a day. Anyone else experience this problem? Other solutions would be appreciated!

A:Computer Freezing for a short time (Hardware Fault)

Identical problem here.. hard drive light goes solid and pc just stops for 1 min, still able to move the mouse cursor but cannot slect anything or alt-tab etc. Any alt tab or double clicking is cached up and then all fired off at once when the minute freeze is up.

I'm pretty certain now it's down to my Asus P5K-E motherboard (which is what I assume the original poster has)

I'm looking towards M/Board now as I have swapped drives and changed CPU from Q6600 to Q8200 also switched from Vista 32bit to Win7 64bit and still get the issue.

I alleviated it for a while by switching my SATA 300 drive down to 150 mode by setting the jumpers.

Have flashed the P5K to the latest bios with no joy.

Full specs are..
Q8200 Quad
Asus P5K-E Wifi Premium
500GB Samsung SATA300
4GB Ram
lightscribe 20x DVDRW
Sony Bluray Drive (installed after problem had already appeared)
2 x ATI HD3870's in crossfire config.
Windows 7 64bit / WinXP dual boot.

I am running Windows XPSP3 with AVG Free, Spybot, Adware, Winpatrol and ZoneAlarm Firewall. Recently my computer has been running very, very slow. My anti-virus scans have increased from 40 minutes to 90 minutes. My anti-virus scan finds Adware.RogueSuspect and Adware.WhyPPC each time it scans and lists these are "warnings". Also, when I run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag recently, computer spends about 30 minutes compacting files (never had this much times spent compacting). Any idea about what is going on here?

A:3 minutes freeze from time to time

You had a BSOD yesterday, it was due to your hibernation file being too small.
To fix this, open an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt and type this code:

Code:
PowerCfg.exe /HIBERNATE /SIZE 100
and then press Enter.
If you don't get an error message, then this should fix the problem.

Many network issues in Device Manager:

Quote:
Microsoft 6to4 Adapter ROOT\*6TO4MP\0000 This device cannot start.
Microsoft 6to4 Adapter #2 ROOT\*6TO4MP\0001 This device cannot start.
Microsoft ISATAP Adapter ROOT\*ISATAP\0000 This device cannot start.
Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #2 ROOT\*ISATAP\0001 This device cannot start.
Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #3 ROOT\*ISATAP\0002 This device cannot start.
Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #4 ROOT\*ISATAP\0003 This device cannot start.
Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface ROOT\*TEREDO\0000 This device cannot start.

To fix this, open Device Manager, expand the Network Adapters category, then right click on each of the above adapters (6to4, ISATAP, and Teredo) and select "Uninstall" (DO NOT DISABLE!!!)
If needed the adapters will return on the next reboot - but in most cases they aren't needed and don't come back.

Other common issues:
- please uninstall Daemon Tools until we're finished troubleshooting. Often it will cause BSOD's in Win7
- please uninstall the ATI Catalyst Control Center as it has had BSOD issues in the past with Win7

Please verify that Windows Update is working for you - lot's of errors in your EventViewer logs.

Beyond that I haven't found any other reason for this issue. I'd suggest trying the above suggestions and then seeing if it fixes things. If not, post back and we'll try some other stuff.

So I recently have had the problem of my computers cpu spiking, I looked at some things and monitored the task manager/process explorer and saw that services.exe, Mcshield.exe, svchost.exe and sometimes even chrome, but this only started yesterday and I have had this computer for around 3 years now. Anything that would help me solve this problem would be greatly appreciated, because I am stumped.

I know three different Vista x64 systems with the same issue, all starting within a week or two of each other. . . different boards, different ages, different hardware, but common is Vista x64. . . i built two of them, and a friend built his own. . .

software all tests out fine, memory tests out fine, and anti virus, spy ware does not detect anything. . .

does anyone know of a hot fix or update that is buggy to Vista x64?

when the freeze up happens, everything stops, even the hard drives stop reading, though still spin. the event view does not give an consistent events preceding each freeze up. . . and usually a restart solves the issue, but not every time. .

thanks

A:Freezing usually within 5 minutes of boot up

This procedure frequently helps to determine whether the cause of a complete lockup is software or hardware:

Lockup with sound loop, NO BSOD/Error report

The fact that 3 systems around you are (suddenly?) locking up makes a software cause slightly more likely - you're installing something on all 3 systems and there's a kernel-mode driver which is misbehaving. However, there's absolutely no guarantee at this stage that it's the same problem on all 3 systems.

If this was a general Vista bug, I'd for one be very upset, seeing as how I'm typing this on an x64 Vista installation.

A:My PC keeps on freezing randomly every 2-5 minutes

freezing is usually down to heat, power bad RAM or hard drive issues.

First download CPUID HWmonitor and post a screenshot.
Second download your hard drive manufacturers diagnostic tool from their site or seatools for windows and run both tests, if you drive fails the tests backup your data and replace the drive.
Third download memtest86 burn it to disc and boot from the disc and let memtest run for 7 passes which can take 6 hours or more. If you get errors on memtest then your RAM is faulty and needs replaced.

Recently after I tried to add another cooling fan PC of freezing keeps after couple minutes being on into my NZXT phandom case my pc would turn on and freeze Sometimes before the windows logo even comes on my mouse and keyboard lights would turn off I have since disconnected the extra cooling fan but the problem did not go away I have PC keeps freezing after couple minutes of being on checked my temperatures and they are not very high My only thought on this problem is that when I also tried to add a nd extra fan which PC keeps freezing after couple minutes of being on did not fit well with its clamps due to the graphics card being right below the location onto my north bridge which at some time had a heat problem as all with this motherboard do but was fixed with a cooler In trying to add the nd fan I might have moved the cooler slightly and messed up the thermal paste connection However I am not completely sure because my temperatures seem normal and are not in the high range The only problems or hints I can see are the freezing after several minutes after startup not reaching the windows logo at all and my mouse and keyboard lights not turning on when the pc does not reach windows logo before being a black screen nbsp

A:PC keeps freezing after couple minutes of being on

When your computer gets a black screen only sometimes, it usually means your ram is on the way out..For example if you boot your computer and it doesn’t work, then go back an hour later, and it does work, your memory is playing up. You can try taking the ram out, gently cleaning it with an antistatic cloth, and replacing it. This may solve your problem.

I have Lenovo U330, 4GB Ram, Dual Core Intel Processor, With windows vista 64bit.

A few days ago my computer went crazy. Every few minutes windows keeps freezing for a minute or two and than everything is back to normal for another 3-4 minutes.
I tried to recover my windows but it always tells me that there is an error.
I tried the tutorials about maximize my performance and I ran the disk error check and nothing came up.

I don't have windows vista installation CD/DVD as Lenovo don't give it to you.

Any help please before I'm formatting the computer and Install windows 7 :-)

Welcome to the forum

Type the words event viewer in search and look for errors about the time the problme ocurred

Type the words memory diagnostic in search and take the test over night. Several hours of testing is needed.

Try in safe mode and see if the problem is still present.

Take the clean boot test and see if still present
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Before doing anything run an antivirus scan and download and scan with malwarebytes.

I every freezing minutes! Laptop few have an HP Pavilion G - DX It s only about months old About weeks ago after turning it on a screen came up saying the cooling fan wasn t working and continued use could result in lost files I went ahead and continued so I could backup files Later in the day the fan made a funny noise and then started again Since then it has been working A few days ago the laptop started freezing randomly during use The last couple of days it has been freezing every - minutes or so I have to hold in the button to turn it off I don t know if this is due to the fan maybe not properly cooling the laptop According to HP my warranty has already ran out I thought they typically lasted a year I imagine it would be cheaper at a repair shop than to send to HP if needed But before I spent any money I wanted to see if maybe it was a simple fix I could do myself I ran startup repair and restored it to a previous day It didn t fix the problem I don t know a lot about computers Laptop freezing every few minutes! so I Laptop freezing every few minutes! was hoping to find some help here Thanks nbsp

A:Laptop freezing every few minutes!

Hi and welcome to TSG forums.
If you computer is less than a year old, I would contact HP customer service...I believe they will replace the fan...You may have to send it to them for service. Worth contacting them to see what they have to say.

Recently after I tried to add another cooling fan into my NZXT phandom case my pc would turn on and freeze Sometimes before the windows logo even comes on my mouse and keyboard lights would turn keeps on PC of couple freezing being minutes after off I have since disconnected the extra cooling fan but the problem did not go away I have checked my temperatures and they are not very high My only thought on this problem is that when I also tried to add a nd extra fan which did not fit well with its clamps due to the graphics card being right below the location onto my north bridge which at some time had a heat problem as all with this motherboard PC keeps freezing after couple minutes of being on do but was fixed with a PC keeps freezing after couple minutes of being on cooler In trying to add the nd fan I might have moved the cooler slightly and messed up the thermal paste connection However I am not completely sure because my temperatures seem normal and are not in the high range The only problems or hints I can see are the freezing after several minutes after startup not reaching the windows logo at all and my mouse and keyboard lights not turning on when the pc does not reach windows logo before being a black screen nbsp

Hello,

For some time now, my computer has been starting up and after about 5 minutes of slow operation it freezes. I can move the cursor around but cannot click on anything. During start-up I get a command to perform a disk scan, sometimes the scan doesn't complete. If it does complete there is no difference in how the computer works, the same problem persists.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Just Vista after 5 freezing minutes.. yesterday my Vista started acting really strangely it won't stop freezing after I have Vista freezing after 5 minutes.. it turned on for about minutes I'll turn a browser on or anything really and after a few minutes it'll freeze up and i'll wait to see Vista freezing after 5 minutes.. if it comes back around as a frozen internet usually would but no instead of going back to normal the cursor comes back but I cannot click on anything after that Everything on the desktop freezes up and it never comes back to normal I can't shut it down regularly or anything After it froze I tried to bring up the Task Manager but when I did instead of the manager it would go black on me and bring up a pop saying that there was a quot security error quot security why would that even be coming up you know The only strange thing that I did that was abnormal was I tried out my memory card slot that you can put your digital camera memory cards in so you don't need a USB cord But anyhow about an hour after I did that and everything seemed normal quot my computer said it installed the new device as usual quot My computer suddenly freezes up a blue screen takes it over with some words on it but it flashed too fast for me to read and then flashed to black and shut itself off That part was really strange to me it definitely not normal Now it just keeps doing freezing up and I can't have it on for more than minutes without it doing that unless i'm on safe mode like now I thought it might need scanned on safe mode so I did but that didn't help at all What I'm thinking is it might be a driver problem Maybe Can anyone help me I have an Dell Inspiron Vista Home Basic

A:Vista freezing after 5 minutes..

Hello celestialpocky,
I think your right, it looks like it is a driver problem, as you are already in safe mode and it's working ok, that tends to confirm it. (although my first thought was a memory issue).
Boot in to safe mode and carry out a system restore to the point before you put in the memory card. Reboot and post your results. Good luck.

This laptop is about to go flying through a window if it keeps messing up on me It all started with a broken DC jack Before I took that to be repaired my laptop started freezing after about to minutes of use When I run it in safe mode as I am now I have no problems whatsoever I had this hopeful idea in my head that everything would be back to normal when I got the circuit board replaced The fact after freezing a Vista few of use Windows minutes that I am here should tell you how well that went Some general info about my laptop before I go any further Dell Inspiron running Vista Home Premium SP - gb of ram - Intel Core Duo CPU T GHz Now as I've said my laptop freezes like crazy unless I'm running in safe mode My first thought was viruses and malware I've scanned with AVG Free MalWareBytes Windows Vista freezing after a few minutes of use and SpyBot and didn't find Windows Vista freezing after a few minutes of use anything wrong I've also cleaned my registry using CCleaner I thought that maybe my circuit board problem could have been the culprit as well for some reason but I've got a shiny new part sitting in there just installed yesterday with the utmost of care and it is still freezing Attempting a system restore proved fruitless since for some reason I have no restore points FML I did a little looking around and found the suggestion to run Verifier and got the expected BSOD out of it Using a program called BlueScreenView I retrieved this A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer The problem seems to be caused by the following file CLFS SYS DRIVER VERIFIER DETECTED VIOLATION If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer If this screen appears again follow these steps Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed If this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need If problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components restart your computer press F to select Advanced Startup Options and then select Safe Mode Technical Information STOP x c x x x x CLFS SYS - Address xfffffa a base at xfffffa DateStamp x e d I've attached the dmp file just in case Anyway I'm hoping I've finally found the source of the problem This is getting really frustrating If anyone has any other ideas as to what the problem may be please by all means let me know One more thing if anyone recommends any software keep in mind that I am a broke college student with no more money to spare Freeware suggestions would be greatly appreciated if possible

When I boot my PC it does the normal boot lands me at my log in page. I enter the PW then I am at desktop. After 30 seconds it will just freeze and nothing works but doing a hard reset. From there it might do this 4-5 times or might not and just work. I am really unsure what is going on but I am starting to feel I am damaging the computer as it has been doing this for 3 days now. Any help would be great thanks in advance.
I have the OTL logs if that is needed. I saw it mentioned in a post while researching but it was never resolved.

For the last few months I've had this annoying glitch on my computer every 2 to 10 minutes, everything including the mouse pointer freezes or moves very slowly for 5 or 6 seconds, if I'm on my voip phone it cuts me off. Using process Explorer I've finally tracked it down to dnsrslvr.dll which says:

Quote:
Service name: Dnscache
Description: The DNS Client service (dnscache) caches Domain Name System (DNS) names and registers the full computer name for this computer. If the service is stopped, DNS names will continue to be resolved. However, the results of DNS name queries will not be cached and the computer?s name will not be registered. If the service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

If I stop this service then the problem stops. Why is it doing this and how do I resolve it?
Thanks.

Hey! I have had my HP Pavillion since over a year now, with no such problems arising. But yesterday as I started up my laptop and logged in, 2 minutes later, it froze and stop responding. Even safe mode started freezing. I have no idea what could be causing this. I have already disabled Windows Defender which seems to be the most frequent cause to all of this, but it didnt work. I have also been getting 2 error messages:

When pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete: logon process has failed to create the security options dialog.
With a dialogue message of: Failure - Security Options

AND

Error: HPHC_Scheduler.exe Application error.

Any help would be appreciated! Pleasee??

If you suspect Kaspersky and it's coming up for renewal, have you considered ditching it for good and using Microsoft's freebie, Microsoft Security Essentials?

Hey, my PC configuration is:

Vista Home Premium 64-bit, 2 GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 @ 2.53GHz 2.40 GHz

EVGA eGeForce 8800 GTS 512MB DDR3

I play Call of Duty 4 and Counterstrike: Source, both on Valve's Steam, and my PC freezes after I play for a short time. It's only when I play games, though, so it must be my GTS video card over heating, right? It freezes the screen and sometimes there is a loud scratchy noise that comes out of the speakers. Once in a while the PC will just restart, but it usually just sits frozen until I force shutdown.

A:Firefox is freezing for 2 minutes when I open , then its Ok

I would have said to check your add ons but resetting should have done that.Try updating Flash Player.Try opening Firefox up with a different page rather than your home page in case it is something there that is slowing you down (save a simple webpage to the desktop and open that). You could try uninstalling and reinstalling but wait on that for a bit in case other suggestions come in first. You could check Task Manager before opening Firefox the first time and see if anything is using CPU resources at that point. Then maybe watch Task Manager after launching Firefox and see if something, maybe antivirus program or some invisible add on is using resources. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I have had it. . . Vista keeps freezing about 5 minutes after boot up. . .

Software up to date, drivers up to date, BIOS, up to date,
memory tested, no errors, switched out 4GIGs RAM, no change, Event viewer , no errors. . .
Shut off Avast, still freezes chkdsk /r no change, ccleaner, no change, deframentation, no change. . .

it used to be after the first reboot, the machine ran fine, until yesterday, when after any and every reboot, 5 minutes, system freezes, nothing works, disk activity can not be heard.

other drive XP, no problems running, no freezeups, am using it now. . .

so what's the deal, any suggestions?

thanks

Hi

I really hope you can help. I built a PC for a mate. It was great until after about 1 month it started freezing when windows 7 was booting up. I tried to reinstall the OS but that froze also at different stages of install. To cut a long story short I swapped the GX card and RAM, then the MB but still had the same issue. I them swapped the CPU. This worked and I re-installed the OS. About a week later it started freezing on win7 boot screen again. I replace the CPU again and all was great. Soon though I started getting a BSOD after about 40 minutes of run time. I have tried installing the OS again but the old issue happens when it freezes during set-up. I have wasted and lot of time and money on this and now have come across this fab site. I hope I have uploaded the correct files. Thanks.

Just ran your dump file which is slightly inconclusive, if you have more please post a few more recent ones for comparison
dump states error code 0xDE POOL_CORRUPTION_IN_FILE_AREA
as you have already changed several components my initial thought would be to check HDD

First off I would like to thank everyone on BC for their gifts of insight and valuable time I have tried to learn as much as I can before bothering anyone with posting redundant questions but alas I m stuck I have this old Sager t notebook with Belkin wireless card and my trusty laser mouse see sig below Whenever I restart this machine it quite literally takes about minutes for Boot Minutes 20 Time the HDD light to quit blinking and be ready for use I have defragged ran spybot normally and in safe mode Norton won t scan completly in safe mode quits after a while and says components are missing but returns a clean bill of health when ran normally I have unchecked all but ccApp symantec and ipoint mouse in the startup menu I have removed items in the startup menu using Spybot startup tool that I was sure were unnecessary I have recently maxed out the ram on this machine to meg but only reports This seemed to help a little Used Reg Mechanic and Windows Care to clean registry I cleaned up the desktop and moved everything to a folder on my taskbar thanks to this site I m now out of ideas I have noticed there is a very long list of things listed under the Services Tab next to Startup in Boot Time 20 Minutes MSCONFIG and all are checked and over half are running I attributed this to my overall slowdown of the machine I don t pretend to know the first thing about these When I check Windows memory cleaner it reports Free Physical mem meg of meg Virtual mem meg of meg and pagefile of The physical memory is usually meg left out of meg right after Boot Time 20 Minutes startup Actual running processes are minimal and cpu is at around when idle Can anyone point me in the right direction I have spent many a Sunday morning over a Cold cup of coffee waiting for this machine to Warm up

A:Boot Time 20 Minutes

First, "Welcome to BleepingComputer.com".The difference of 512mb and 448mb of RAM represents the amount of RAM dedicated to your video card. You should be able to adjust the amount allocated from the BIOS. If you run video intensive application you may want to increase the amount.Let's see if you have a program or driver that may be hanging. Got to the Event Viewer located in the Administrative Tools, under the Control Panel. List the last four error messages here. When you find an error message right click on it, and select properties. That is the information we need you to post here.

Well, for the last three months, I've been getting random 1-3 minute freezes at a time. This happens during any activities that I may be partaking in, either it be gaming or even just chatting on skype/facebook. It used to happen a lot less often than it currently does and I just dealt with it but now it's become increasingly annoying so I figured I'd check out some forums. I did get one BSOD a couple of weeks ago for the first time. I put the PC together myself and this was my second build. I checked out the page file business and nothing changed.

I'm not sure what other information I can provide that will be useful but let me know what else I can do to help out. Thanks in advance!

A:PC freezes for three minutes at a time

could be a number of things including a virus or possibly even faulty hardware (less likely). a lot of freeze ups can be traced back to heat problems and/or an incorrectly configured BIOS. i can't say what your experience level is but if this isn't your first build i'm gonna say you know the basics and how to troubleshoot more common things.

firstly, the dxdiag log looks pretty normal to me, and since there aren't any problems listed i would be looking more at the audio or video drivers themselves... with the latter of the two being the more likely candidate for problems. directx installation is pretty cut and dry but sometimes graphics drivers can just be "broken" on certain machines, so I would start there. are you using the latest graphics drivers? i'm guessing you are not overclocking so i wont ask about 3rd party apps or anything but you'll also want to make sure that the BIOS is configured correctly and at least double check the RAM timings. i always put these in myself using the factory timings that are located on the modules or on the packaging. memory can cause a number of different issues if not configured correctly.

so i would start there and post back with the results. good luck!

Some months ago, my PC suddenly started taking 10 minutes to boot. The shutdown time increased dramatically as well.

This happened after I installed a game (through Steam) that had some kind of DRM install with it. The install also, I recall, seemed to force a DirectX install. After that my PC started having this problem. Aside from startup/shutdown time increase (from 1 minute to 10 minutes), one software I use started acting up in one way: loading a plugin inside the software shows a progress bar "Scanning DirectX FX... " & "Scanning 2/7: Tee/Sink-to-Sink Converter". The problem with this, is that it now takes like 30 seconds when it was nearly instant before.

Otherwise everything seems fine. Really hope I don't have to do a clean OS install. Attached images of event viewer, which show the 3 errors beginning at startup.

A:Boot time = 10 minutes (OS on SSD)

It's a software problem I'm pretty sure, you can test that theory by going to start bar search box typing msconfig , hitting enter, then going to the startup tab and unchecking everything.

If I'm right and this does solve the problem on reboot I would start rechecking items one at a time until you find the culprit.

I had installed Adobe Photoshop CS5, but it is unchecked to start up upon booting up.
Also, Nov 8th Windows installed some security updates.
And I copied a 34 GB Blue ray disk ISO file to my C drive. I travel allot and put allot of movies on my laptop for easier travel.
But, 15 minutes to actually login in a bit much, in my opinion.
I am a novice when it comes to event viewer etc. If there is any assistance I would appreciate it.
Also, booting up in safe mode works great and fast.
All this happened with the past day as all of these programs and updates were done yesterday.
Only one setting was changed on my laptop. I changed Hibernate to 3 hours.

A:Login time 15 minutes, W7 64 bit

malware/virus free?
run chkdsk /f on the drive
run disk cleanup and defrag lately?

you have some program upon startup that is taking all the time. not related to copying files to the hard drive.

Might use msconfig to uncheck all apps starting up and add one back at a time until you are not fast again.

Hi, I've recently been having problems playing my computer games (WoW and Guild Wars). I would log on and the game will be running smoothly for 10 minutes or so and would suddenly become very choppy and sometimes freeze. After about 2-3 minutes (sometimes longer) of this, the game will run smoothly again for another 10 minutes or so and repeat its behavior.

I don't consider myself very computer savvy, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Computer won't shutdown after 15 minutes...I have to hit the reset button to get a restart.

I am running the 64bit Ultimate Release Candidate

System:
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe
Opteron 185 OC'd to 2.75Ghz
4G OCR memory
Sapphire 1650 PCI-E video
2 green Western Digital 1Tb HD's
2 Western Digital 500Gb HD's

Haven't had any difficulties with Windows 7 other than this inability to restart...HELP!!!

A:shutdown time over 15 minutes

this is most likely not due to your hardware, but due to the software/gadgets and also drivers you may have installed yourself. You would have to go down the list, trial and error (or by searching here for known apps that have problems with 7), and uninstalling 1 by one quite possibly. If you can boot to safe mode and it seem alot faster, no shutdown hangs, then you know your answer isnt the OS install or something registry related.

This also could be if you have a usb hub in use, or the externals making this hang. Which also could be the issue with the 3gb in drives you have there... are those external or internal?
