I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Slow browser, IE closing, Outlook and Yahoo closing

Hi Elise,
thank you. I ended up getting rid of PC Tools Internet Security and switching to AVG Basic Free. I think most of the major problems went away.
Yahoo has stayed up, Outlook has stayed up, browser seems to work quickly, facebook didn't have floating text and pictures anymore, was able to do some posting, sent some large emails. But, and not exactly sure, IE has frozen up, but not as often. The dds program you had me run this morning froze and I had to do a hard shut off, task mgr didn't respond and the weirdest thing of all, the clock stopped. Can't say I have ever seen that. So I am not sure what exactly is going on, if it really is malware or some setting is messed up. I wasn't able to run video on a site last night. Major improvement since I got rid of PC tools, but not quite right. Sorry, nontechie.

How do you use your Firefox? your system is not meant to be a power house its supposed to be used for general stuff like word, email, some video's and thats it.

Have you tried running with all add-ons disabled? Look under Help then click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled. Also how many tabs are you running during a session.

Hello everyone I'm having the issue noted above BSODs attribute the crash to either one of two files cdd dll most commonly and win k sys only once Screen turns jagged goes black and then BSOD but only when closing of Warcraft, World Chrome BSOD resizing/closing also when occasionally I've had this crashes happen to me only times in a whole week already World of BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome Warcraft crashes were all succesive BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome but after updating Catalyst drivers it never happened again PC was crash-free for or days thought it may have solved the issue and I could stop worrying about faulty hardware components but yesterday night closing Chrome it happened again I turned off Aero desktop after that just in case The problem is I can't find any Memory dump or minidump for those BSODs even though settings are on for that maybe MEMORY DMP is too large I have free Gb out of on my boot drive I changed it to minidumps just in case Oh also it was already set to overwrite so no idea what's going on Could not find them manually nor could SF Diagnostics tools which I just ran My rig is new only about months old and no hardware changes since The only components coming from my older PC are the boot HDD and graphics card The only thing that's happened is or power outages in December but BSODs started only last week If any hardware components are malfunctioning they are luckily under warranty but I need to determine if that's the case Only other strange thing is that when gathering my rig's data for this post Everest shows my Motherboard as quot Unknown quot I'll double check I installed all drivers Thanks in advance btw great tool that SF Diagnostics I'm no computer wizard but it's quite useful even for an amateur like me

A:BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome

Hi Haxiel.

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup tool before you upload another zip.

Obvious to anyone. You have three malware apps running live at the same time. You have Avast, Kaspersky, and AVG.

You need to remove them all and install Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST.

If you continue to crash even after removing them upload the DMP file as you have old drivers that need updating.

Everytime I open a certain program on my computer, I get this message:
"Studio program file has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
And then the program closes abruptly. Any ideas on how i can stop this?

A:How to stop programs from closing on their own?

There is a problem with the install of the program. Some files may be corrupt. Uninstall the program using Revo Uninstaller Do the advanced method and remove any leftover files from the Registry. restart the computer. then reinstall the software program. Look to the web site of the software manufacturer for an updated version.

Hello,
Can someone help me find out how I can stop the CD-RW from opening and closing all the time. I did check for virus' and the scan did not find any. I am running a Windows 2000 PRO OS. Im lost here.

Thanks
Mike

A:CD-RW opening and closing and it wont stop

Hi Mike and welcome to TSF.

This might not be the right place to ask this, but that is a strange problem. I know of some trojans that can do this. Does it happen if you are disconnected from the internet?

See if this finds anything:

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Try reinstalling the drivers for that cdrw and also check the cables (unplug and plug them back in).

Hi. My mums cd/cd-wr drive is going mad. It keep opening and closing continuesly. I have tried rebooting and shuting down but no luck. When the drive closes autoplay starts. The pc is slow and with autoplay flashing up its near to impossible to do anything. The first thing I want to do is disable autoplay and then we can fix the problem hopefully. So:

How do I disable autoplay?
How do I stop the drive from opening and closing continuesly?

A:Cd drive opening and closing - it wont stop

i would first try to remove the cd-rw from the device manager, start>control panel>system and reboot for windows to reload the driver for this hardware. if it is still the same it is most likely your hardware has internal problem/s.

Hi,

i have a word document that has I, Student Name. in it and this code
Code:
Private Sub Document_Close()
Dim rng As Range
Set rng = ThisDocument.Content
If rng.Find.Execute("Student Name") Then
rng.Text = InputBox("Enter Your Name")
If Response = "" Then Exit Sub
End If
ThisDocument.Save
End Sub

and when i run the code it looks for Student Name and if its there it asks for me to insert my name
but it allows for you to press cancel and just exit with out entering a name
how can i make it so you cant hit cancel?
and when you do it just keeps coming up with the same input box?

A:Stop word from closing when hit cancel in input box

You cannot do it under a Sub Document_Close because it is already closing.

You will have to think of another option.

The last 2 days FF keeps closing after 1-2mins.

I don't even get the crash report now it just closes and upon opening it takes me the restore session.

I have done a fresh install of it deleting all known traces of FF and although better it still closes but now maybe after 7-10 mins.

I'm running Win10 Pro (clean install)

I tried to do a system restore to roll back 3 days but I get an error saying it couldn't complete the restore.

I have done a full system scan with defender that took around 10-12 hours but all came back clear.

I'm using edge for now but really would like to get FF back.

Any ideas most welcome please.

I have autoplay completely disabled.
I realize that Windows Explorer (WE) will open if a new dvd, usb drive, etc is connected/inserted.

But 'I open' all of the WE windows I use but "Win7 64 will close that WE window if the thing is removed, even when it did NOT create/open it" !!

Anyone know how to disable this 'automatic' CLOSING of WE by Win 7??

Thanks for any help!! , this is a pain (and infinitely stupid on Win7's part) !!

This started a couple of weeks ago, I think. Whenever I close Firefox, firefox.exe in the processes is still opened and taking up a whole lot of memory. I can't open another Firefox window unless I manually close firefox.exe in the task manager myself. Not sure if it's a trojan or anything.

On another note, my Windows Live Messenger is being wonky and freezing after resuming from hibernate (using a laptop) once in a while. I use task manager to close msnmsgr.exe, and reopen WLM, but again, when signing in, it just freezes.

Any help appreciated.

I have this strange problem. Occasionally (meaning when I'm asleep and my dad wants to use the computer, so he wakes me up) Firefox will not start. I have to go into the CtrlAltDel=> Processes, and sometimes there will be 2-3 and sometimes even 4 instances running. Whats keeping firefox from either not shutting down, or not starting up? Its really starting to bug me, since my father cannot figure out how to shut it down.

Wow, DD, I have ben using FF for quite awhile now, and nothing like this has occured. My wife no hablar FireFox, so we are switching back and forth from IE to FF all the time.

Pending the comments of experts, I think it may call for a reinstall.

However, I want to clarify that I have FF on my toolbar, and my understanding of shutting down is closing it, as it "click the X".

Hi, I'm new here, sorry if this question was asked before.

I've been having trouble using both Firefox and AOL. Firefox gets hijacked sometimes, but the most pain is getting the pop-up window saying it has to close with the "firefox.exe" statement.

Ran searches, only found Firefox issue with firefox.exe-06188867, deleted it several times and more just pop up.

Still yet to find out what is wrong with AOL. It keeps closing and signing me off.

Appreciate the help!

So I always close Firefox by closing the main window and If I've been using it for awhile it'll take a minute or two for it's processes to close in Task Manager Well after a load of slowdown from Windows Automatic Updates then getting everything back up to speed I closed down Firefox for the night So it did the usual thing but then I noticed the RAM usage stop lowering from both it's processes firefox exe and plugin-container exe All of a sudden crashreporter exe pops up and a button for the Crash Reported appears in the Firefox after Crashed Closing? Taskbar However no window for it appeared So I Firefox Crashed after Closing? closed the Crash Reporter in the task bar and then firefox exe and plugin-container exe went back to normal and closed about seconds after that However just to be safe I re-opened Firefox It went completely unresponsive so I had to close it in Task Manager manually Afterward I reopened it and it loaded everything quickly and worked fast like it should After closing that no crash reporter came up This little problem only happened last night The only plugin I had running before was Flash Still what caused it to crash Did it somehow crash when it tried to end it's own processes Was it maybe because of Windows Update eating up a lot of the RAM fifteen minutes earlier Maybe was it a one-time Firefox Crashed after Closing? thing I really don't see why it decided to crash They say that if Firefox processes remain in Task Manager after closing the Firefox windows then it is still running but is unresponsive Whenever it does this they'll close after about a minute Still what even happened I'm using Firefox

A:How stop Office programs bringing other files to front after closing?

I love how you ended it: "Word".

I am experiencing the same thing. I happen to have Word 2003 and yep, it's doing the same thing. I didn't know that it didn't do this in XP and that it does this in 7 because I've never done anything to make me notice. However, I can see how stupid this is. It's inconsistent. It's almost as if Windows 7 is programmed to do this with Microsoft Office, almost like it's saying, "I see that you have other files open in Word. Therefore, when you close this one I'll shift the focus to the last document you looked at instead of shifting focus back to me". It's like, "Uh, wait a minute. That's inconsistent, Windows. What's wrong with you?"

I'm beginning to wonder if there's something in the Registry that is making it behave this way.

My apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.

I'm having problems closing Firefox in Windows 7.
It appears that the program is always still running in the background and uses large quantities of CPU usage.
I always have to stop the program in Task Manager or reboot before it will open again.
Does anyone have any suggestions or a possible fix please?

Many thanks in advance

A:Issues with closing Firefox in Windows 7

can i ask what version of firefox your running? this was a common issue in 3.5.4 (and 3.5.5 i think....) but the latest version, 3.6 seems to have eliminated it entirely,

Mozilla doesn't seem to have a clue what's causing the crashes.
I'm running only one other app which is the newest Flash (from Adobe website).
The faulting module is XUL.DLL.
Attatched a couple of files from Event Viewer.
The "after close" crash is sporatic (maybe once every two or three days).
Anyone have an idea ?

A:Firefox 19.0.2 Crashes Immediately After Closing

Hi bej,

While researching, I came across various instances where 'similar crashes' are reported with 'Mozilla Firefox version 19.0.2'; appears to be a known issue.

You may try the troubleshooting steps listed in this tutorial to see if that helps: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...t-and-get-help

If the issue persists, you may try moving back to install an older version of 'Firefox' to and check results.
Hope this helps.

Whats Up Guys.

For some reason, when I'm doing my normal computing activities, my Firefox window closes for no apparent reason.

I realised I had a problem right now when I was listening to a radio station in a window and that disappeared while the stream kept on playing.

Also, not quite sure if this is related or not, but I have a yellow triangle with a exclamation point that comes up in my start up tray from time to time.

Could any of you guys please give me some help as to why my Firefox windows are closing prematurely like this and to why that yellow triangle is coming up like that.

Any help or direction to helpful threads would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks As Always.

A:Firefox Windows Keep Closing/Disappearing

OS? Are you running the latest Firefox? Have you run a virus scan recently?

Also, what does the yellow triangle tell you? (there is usually a pop-up message displayed)

Hi,
I have been having problems with Firefox ever since I installed the external IP add on. Every time I open a new page it closes half a second later, I usually have to try about 5x till it finally stays open.
I am running on a PowerBook G3 with Mac Os X 10.4.9 and an eMac G3 also with 10.4.9.
I was wondering if anyone here has had the same problems or if anybody has any solutions I would appreciate them.
I wanted to try to uninstall the addons but I did not know how.

Regards, Icy

A:Firefox Windows closing right after being opened

Hi

Firstly try in Firefox Safe Mode. If it stays stable it's one of your addons.

Have Firefox closed. Go to Utilities (in the Applications folder) and open Terminal, then run:

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode

If you don't encounter the problem there, then close and open in normal mode as usual and in Tools>Addons, uninstall the faulty extension.

If you have more than one, keep disabling one by one and restarting Firefox to find the culprit. Yes, a pain but that's to save you from deleting all of them. If you don't really want them then you can delete all of them and it'll work.

This also applies to themes.

A:malware preventing firefox from closing

I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and it detected the file. It said that it deleted it, but it just pops up again in the same directory.
Also, I noticed that this process disguises itself as Firefox all the time, e.g. when Firefox is closed I see "Firefox" running in the processes window, when it's open, there are two "Firefox" there.

Help will be so much appreciated!

Hi,
A question about the sound on the PC. The Window's startup and closing jingle will not play ever sense I unwisely but temporarily had a beta program installed on my PC, Windows XP SP 2 OS. Actually it was removing the bate program after it was causing problems that it took the Windows startup and closing jingles with it. The jingles are still there in the Window's Sound Device but know matter what I do to reactivate them from Window's Sound Device they just will not reactivate. They are there but wont reactive! Anyone know a real solution to this that doesn't involve a total reinstall? Thanks.

John

A:Sounds - Startup and Closing Jingles!

I updated to Windows 10 a little bit ago on an older Dell Inspiron laptop. I regularly use the laptop for picture editing. Since updating about every 30 seconds the desktop and task bar will go black, then reload. It shuts down any files I have open, which is super annoying when I'm trying to move pictures from my camera card to my external hard drive. And, actually, when I try to move pictures, as of today it's shutting down almost immediately.
A techy friend thought it was a virus and had me download MalwareBytes. (We used Bullguard for antivirus protection). Malwarebytes found some malicious files, and I deleted all of them. But, the problem is continuing. What do I do next? I am so frustrated by this problem.
I did a quick search of the forum for this question and didn't see it on another thread.

Then make a complete checkdisk of your disk and external devices

More than once I have accidentally clicked the close button on the top right of my browser window. In the past this was not a problem because I had 'warn when closing multiple tabs' checked (I always have multiple tabs open). Firefox would shoot me a nice little warning and I could click cancel and not lose all my tabs. For some reason FF has stopped giving me a warning message, even though I still have 'warn me when closing multiple tabs' checked. I'm not sure when this started happening, but it has been going on for a while. I am running FF 22.

I have tried (unsucessfully):
*unchecking the checkbox and restarting FF, then checking the box it again and restarting
*starting in safe mode
*clearing cache and restarting
*restarting my computer

Does anyone have some ideas of what else I can try or know how I can get my nice little warning box back?

Good Day,

I'm hoping someone can tell me how to disable the music/whatever windowsXP makes when it loads or closes. My one computer has never "played" it, an I'd like to say the same for my new laptop.

So, if it's possible would someone let me know! It's really is like nails-on-a-chalkboard too me.

I'd be ever-so grateful.

Welcome to Bleeping Computer, please be sure you have read and followed the Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Instructions for receiving help in cleaning your computer http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/All advice given is taken at your own risk.I apologize for the wait, if your issues are not resolved, read the instructions posted above and then follow the directions below. If you no longer need help, I would appreciate a quick post letting me know so I can close your topic.I am not seeing a log in the HJT log, but I do see AVG 7 and my information says that is out of date as of 5/31/2008. If you know something I don, please make me aware.Assuming you are runing the free version of AVG, here is a link to the newest version:http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-an...us-free-editionIf you intend to run the free version, take care not to choose trials, etc. Download, install and update, then run a system scan. Quarantine (virus vault) at least what is found and post the scan results for me to view and we will work from that point. If you are going to run HJT on your Desktop, you need to create a folder to hold the .exe, logs and backups before they get los, right click and create one, call it HJT and it will look lik this:C:\Documents and Settings\Dark\Desktop\HJT\HiJackThis.exeThanks

I have two computers that have win x pro ult Recently both computers after typing in my poassword for login to windows I get the desktop icons the hardware meter gadgets then a windows pops up near the top left corner about a of the screen size and it immediately closes It isn't there long enough for me to read anything in it or even see if there is anything in it Under start-up folder in the start menu both computers do have logitech registration I click it fill it out and re start the computer Still happens and the start up folder still has logitech's product registration there I complete it restart the computer and the window still shos up then closes screen startup, window at closing opening instanly. and Damn near instantly Under start-up the logitech thing is gone window screen opening and closing at startup, instanly. so it is window screen opening and closing at startup, instanly. blank But it still happens Installing the webcam and using it for Logitech Vid is the only thing I have changed recently on both computers Also windows did have an update monday i believe Any thoughts I have no idea what to look for in regedit

A:window screen opening and closing at startup, instanly.

Type event viewer in search and see if anything appears there, that might be an answer

Try in safe mode

Try a clean boot to try to localize the cause.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Unless on a network, if two computers just started this recently, it is something that you did.

I upgraded to IE8 about a month ago. Everything has been working perfectly until about 3 days ago. I am running 1500/256 kps so everything happens pretty fast. Now when I try to close a window{click on the big red X in the top right corner}, it takes about 5 seconds for the window to close. I have run a full scan with AVG 9 and Uniblue Spy Eraser. Both have not picked up anything. More annoying than anything. Has anyone got any ideas

A:Closing programs is very slow

Sounds like there's something else that's eating away at your computer. You might want to run a virus scan (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/) to see if that's the case.

My MSWord program is slow, to the point of freezing momentarily, when opening and closing. I use Windows XP as my OS. I know that this problem can sometimes be associated with a corrupt normal.dot file, but cannot find a solution. Although I have looked for that file even with the option of 'show all files' checked, the file is nowhere to be found on my C:drive. What can I do to solve this problem?

A:Word is slow when opening and closing

XP doesn't search hidden files and folders by default, you have to tell it to. In addition, where you tell it to is well buried.

1. Go to Start>Search
2. In the left hand pane, click "Other Search Options"
3. Click "Documents (word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)"
4. Towards the bottom on the left hand pane click on "Use advanced search options" (sometimes it says "More advanced options").
5. Still in the left hand pane, (you might have to scroll down) find "Search hidden files and folders" and check that, as well as any other options you want.
6. Click the "Back" button until you're back to where you can actually start the search.
7. Enter the name of the file you want to find, click "Search" and it will now look at everything...and sometimes take what seems like forever to do it.

Be sure to go to View in the Search window and click on Details to enable that view...so it will give you the location of the file. You can delete the file directly from the Search window.

Hi All:

Any thoughts on this problem?

My PC has been slow to shutdown recently, when I go to close down for the nite I notice the hard drive churning away, and during the shut down process I see a window pop up saying explorer.exe needs to shut down. There is a few seconds of a progress bar doing it's thing. Sometimes I see the same progress bar with defender.exe (I think, it's defender dot something) as well. The shutdown process just seems much slower than it used to be. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks!

Scott

I have a new (one-week old) install of XP/SP2.

The property page dialog of a shortcut takes about fifteen seconds to close if I have clicked the Find Target button and the target is found. Everything else works properly. The only problem is the slow closing of the dialog box. The 15 second time begins when the Find Target button is clicked. Also, this time is additive: if I click the Find Target button more than once, the delay increases (approximately one minute for three clicks).

When the Find Target button is clicked, an Explorer window opens with the proper folder and the delay is not affected by whether the Explorer window is closed or left open. If the target is not found, then the Properties dialog closes immediately, as normal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Howard

A:Slow Closing Properties Dialog

A short addition to the problem description:

When Find Target is clicked, the properties dialog box loses keyboard focus for the previously-described delay time. Any suggestions on tools I might use to find the problem? I have used SysInternals Process Explorer and can find nothing strange going on there. I have removed my anti-virus program and stopping unnecessary processes. Still no luck.

Please help - My Windows XP Sony Vaio PCG-K295HP laptop has developed a fault that causes windows to close of their own accord, web browsers to display 'stopped' and fail to load web pages and my laptop now beeps for approximately 30 seconds whilst booting up.

I have read as much as i can find about this on various forums and have attached a hijack this logfile.

Thanks in advance!

A:Constant beeping on startup, and windows automatically closing. Web browsers stopping

Constant beeping is always some sort of warning. Does your laptop have a video card that could possibly have become disconnected? Is your memory seated tightly. When a ram module becomes loose, it too can cause a beeping. Good Luck. I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about laptops otherwise.

What would cause Word 2000 to take a long time to open and close. We're talking approximately 30 seconds to do something that should take only a few seconds. Because it's taking so long to open I'm also having problems with the Write Letters feature in Quickbooks. Any suggestions? Please help!

I have googled many users experiencing in Closing Opening Windows Slow Motion and the same problems but they are either left unresolved or solved in methods that does not work for me I have an Alienware M x Windows Home Premium -bit The situation Windows Opening and Closing in Slow Motion is as such Everything runs perfectly well There are no random BSODs nor is the computer operating slowly The problem is that whenever i open or close a window Windows Opening and Closing in Slow Motion the window does so in slow motion It takes like seconds for the window to either fade in or out When Windows Opening and Closing in Slow Motion i try to play a game the game itself runs in slow motion There is no hit to the graphics or the sound I have such problems intermittently over the last few months but most of the time the problem is solved by either restarting the laptop or turning on the power adapter so that the laptop runs on A C power The problem went away for quite a while until two weeks ago where it started all over again This time i was unable to solve the problem through the old fixes Last week i thought i solved the problem when i did a clean install of both my Intel HD graphics driver and the Nvidia drivers For a couple of days the laptop ran fine Two days ago the problem came back but i solved it by doing the old restarting and plug in power adapter trick Today however both of these methods failed What i have done Ran Virus Malware Checks with AVG and Malwarebytes Nothing detected Ran SFC Scannow No problems Did a Clean Boot Problem persist Update whatever drivers i can and all Windows Update Problem persist Used Event Viewer No errors except for an error regarding DCHP Physical Memory from Task Manager is I have GB RAM Using Resource Monitor the biggest users of Memory is svchost exe Local System Network Restricted and Chrome In short i have no idea what is going on If there is any more information i can provide to facilitate any kind helpers i will be more than glad to EDIT It's weird I just uninstalled some programs which i don't use anymore which prompted a restart Seems to be alright for now I will monitor developments for the next few days If the problem goes away i will mark this as solved This kind of mirrors some of the other users solution to this problem The problem for some of them seem to mysteriously go away Regards Ben

A:Windows Opening and Closing in Slow Motion

To me this sounds like a possible lack of enough ram. Even though the system is not acting slowly; the system could still be suffering from lack of enough available ram to run not just windows itself; but background programs and services, etc. so you might want to consider upping the amount of ram you have to at least 8gb. Especially if its for gaming use; you want to have more than enough for gaming rather than not enough at all.

A:Solved: WindowsXPSP3 Booting & closing Extremely Slow

I would try these if I was having your problems and I have put them in the most logical order, so take your time and read each tutorial before you begin and backup all personal files first
Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer;
Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
Click Properties, and then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

My wife's PC running XP with Outlook 2000 has become very slow at opening and closing emails in the last couple of weeks. The email windows hang and break up on closing, like there is a memory issue or something else going on. All other programs run well---PC has 1.5 MG ram and runs Norton 2007 antivirus and superantisptware programs. Uninstalled and then reinstalled Norton and Superantipsyware to see if they caused it, but same problem. I have posted a hijack log in Security forum to see if that may be an issue. Just wondering if any thoughts in this Forum regarding what might be slowing things down. Are there any add-ins or similar things in Outlook 2000 that can be unchecked like in Outlook 2007?
Thanks.
G

I run XP Professional with Word and Excel 2003. I "think" my problem started after I upgraded to Office SP3. The apps open and close very slow. If I open Word without addins using winword.exe /a -- it's fine. How do I figure out what addin is causing the problem or does anyone know which one might cause this? It's making me nuts!

Ideas?

Thanks

A:Word/Excel 2003 Slow Loading and Closing

I had the same issue, and after reading your post I tried the winword /a also. Word opened in a few seconds. After some searching around I found an old autorecovery file in c:\documents and settings\myusername\application data\microsoft\word.
The name was something like "autorecovery save of .....".as$.
I deleted this file and now Word opens and closes normally again.

You should also check the Startup subfolder in the folder mentioned above. Move anything there to another folder temporarily and see if it helps. You could also try moving your normal.dot (and any other templates) from the Application Data\microsoft\Templates folder.

I've also seen this happen when accessing documents on a network share, when the local DNS settings point to an external (i.e. Internet) server as the primary, then an internal one as the secondary (it should be the reverse). You can check this from a command prompt using ipconfig/all.

Other than that you'd have to disable (or remove) the add-ins one by one to determine which it is.

Hope you got it solved already, but if not, hope this helps.

Steve

Hello I need some assistance I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that runs Vista Home Edition Whenver I boot up and try to open a program or application it takes a really REALLY long time for it to open For example whenever I try to open Firefox or Internet Explorer or even my control panel the window will open and will be blank Then it will start to load but either take an enormous amount of time or after I've become tired of waiting I'll try to exit and it will say response apps slow EXTREMELY opening/closing times when programs and Not Responding Now eventually this goes away and the window does close but like I said it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer EXTREMELY slow response times when opening/closing apps and programs or Mozilla any links that I click or addresses that I type it again takes forever I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and again nothing Any suggestions

Now eventually this goes away and the window does close, but like I said, it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up. If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer or Mozilla, any links that I click or addresses that I type, it again, takes forever.

I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing. I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and, again, nothing.

Any suggestions?!

A:Windows XP hangs a little after closing Firefox or Windows Mail and lag games.

A little update...

I ran Advance WindowsCare V2 Peronal and let it "clean and fix" everything but I still get the delay/lag after closing almost any program. For instance, I opened up Windows defrag utility, closed it and tried clocking on start and it didn't open for about 3 or 4 seconds. I don't know what's causing this but it will also slow my game mention above down like I have something else using a lot of CPU power or something for a few seconds...and this happens in the game quite often...I'd say it does it at least once every minute.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? It's very annoying and I would hate to have to reinstall Windows since I just literally got everything reinstalled and copied back over when this problem started occurring. If you need any more info or logs, let me know. Thanks.
