I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Hard drive change

Hi wcheard,

Welcome to Techspot!
Sometimes when you swap a hard drive over to another PC it doesnt like the hardware change.

Try the following:
Remove the HDD from the Compaq and re-boot the pc. Even though the HDD is missing you should still get a picture on the screen.
If you DONT get a picture with the HDD removed the the Compaq either has a) a faulty mobo OR b) there may a problem with the graphics card. This all dpeends if you have a graphics card installed or if you are using onboard VGA.

Hope this helps

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

A:External Hard Drive - Drive Letter changed - unable to change back

Welcome aboard.

Try this:

Download V 0.8.1 from

Drive Tools for Windows

Unzip to a folder. In it you will have two folders Win32 and x64, each containing DriveCleanup.exe for Windows 32bit and 64 bit respectively.

Now unplug all the USB devices from your PC (except of course the Keyboard and mouse), right click on the appropriate DriveCleanup.exe for your system and run it as an administrator.

This will remove all non-present drives from the registry.

Reboot and then plug-in your external drive.

The drive will be installed and hopefully you should be able to assign any free drive letter to it.

Please report whether it resolved your problem.

Hello Recently bought a new Laptop D External files Change Partitioned Hard to back up from Drive Drive? and went through all the setting up process one of which was Change back up files from D Partitioned Drive to External Hard Drive? Windows back up At the time I just went for the partitioned drive option but after a week I've decided to buy an external Hard drive for my back ups instead My questions are Can I easily change the destination of the back up files Do I just delete everything on Drive D once I'm backing up to an external Hard Drive or will Windows give me this option when I change to external Hard Drive The Back up is done on a schedule so how do I get on when the date passes Will it ask me to plug my external Hard Drive in the next time I boot up Finally I'd like to back up our Desktop too running on Vista Can I just partition the external Hard Drive and keep our laptop and Desktop backed up on the same hard drive Cheers Matthew

A:Change back up files from D Partitioned Drive to External Hard Drive?

Hi Matthew -

You don't need to partition the HD to keep your different backups on it.

The WindowsImageBackup file needs to be named only that and in the root of the external to reimage from the booted DVD or Repair CD, however you can click on it to see which PC it is for.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
Backup User and System Files

I don't like the way Win7 file backup works so I drag the active User folder from each computer here to external once per month, then update the backup image every few months. You may decide to go Manual after trying the automated backup, since you'll need to move the external to catch the backup anyway.

My External Hard Drive (My Book) was always Drive letter F.

I went to sleep and woke up to find Windows 7 Pro had updated and rebooted and I was welcomed by my login screen.

Consequently now my My Book external HDD now reads as Drive letter G.

I went into Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

Drive letter F is not available.

F is assigned to a drive that does not exist and never has. I am confused. I only have one CD drive and it says now that I have 2 even though the one addressed as F doesn't have any information. If I click on F it says "Insert Disk"

One things I have never been able to get right is changing a hard drive with Windows on without reloading Windows.

Let's say for example I have a laptop with one drive on it (and let say only one partition) and I would like to put in a bigger hard drive. How do I do that without reloading windows.

Other than copying all files over to the new drive and setting that partition with the Windows files on the new drive as the active one, what else do I need to do?

hello all!
i encountered a problem after installing a new hard drive
i have 3 HDs (including the one i just installed) C: wich is where windows is installed and E: and F: for data
after installing the new HD ( F: )and formatting it, my system stopped booting, it just hangs, so i changed the boot order and it boots fine, but not through C: but through E:
i also found new BOOT folder in E:, wich wasnt there before
i believe that the HD the system boots from should be the one Windows is installed on ( C: ) so if im not mistaken (very likely i am) i should have C: marked as BOOT and SYSTEM in the Disk Management window
i searched a bit but cannot find a way to fix this, help would be greatly apreciated!

I have a new computer that runs W7 Prof 64 bit. I noticed when I got it the following.

Drive C (W7 on it and it's the boot drive)
Drive E (second hard drive
Drive D (CDROM drive)
Hard Drives are both 1TB SATA3
What is on the E drive is data I copied there.
I would like to change the E drive to D and the CDROM drive D to E.
This way my hard drives will be C and D and the CDROM will be E.
I have no idea how to do this. Can anyone help me?

A:Change Hard Drive Letter

You can do that in Disk Management. Right click on the drive(s) and you will see. But you will first have to assign a different letter (e.g. M) to E or D to free up that letter. If you have data on E, it may lose the path though.

My computer's Windows XP OS recently "crashed" so I put in a new hard drive with Windows ME OS. I've installed everything with the replacement hard drive, but for some reason I can't get it to recognize my other hard drives that have information written from the XP OS. The only way I have found to get my old hard drives to work is to reformat them, but that requires deleteing the information on the drives- something I absolutely cannot do. Is there any way I can get these to work with the new OS?
The 2 extra hard drives are a 160GB Western Digital
and a 120GB Maxor (formerly my boot-up drive)

I'm cloning my hard drive onto another one, but I'm not exactly sure what the process is for setting the cloned one as my No1 drive. My old one is on its last legs and I'd rather use it for my less important things. What will happen when I disconnect my old one from my computer and only have the new one on it?

Will everything be literally the exact same on the new one? Same partition names and everything? And if so, can I then reconnect my old one and use its 2 partitions just like normal in addition to the 2 new cloned ones in My Computer? And won't those partition names conflict?

Any help on what I should do for this transition would be greatly appreciated, thanks

A:How do I change to a cloned hard drive?

If cloning goes OK you will have exact copy of old hdd on a new one.
Then you can disconnect an old drive from the mobo and the system will boot from the new drive.

If your programs and Winows are installed on D : (as the bootable drive) then you cannot change the drive to C :.

There are thousands of Registry entries that would be affected and nothing would run.

You would have to do a complete reinstall.

Hi. I have two hard drives in my computer. One is 320GB and it is almost filled up. I also have a 1TB hard drive that I bought recently. All the programs I install automatically choose the C drive (320GB). How can I change the default hard drive to the A drive (1TB)? I know you can just change the install directory when your installing the program but it would be a lot easier if it automatically chose the A drive. Some programs don't even give you a choice where to install it.

A:Change default hard drive

If your 320 GB drive is filled up with user data, like pictures, songs, etc, just move them over to your new drive and use that for data storage. If the 320 GB drive is filled up with apps and games, you could either uninstall what you don't need, or clone the 320 GB to the 1 TB drive.

Options: 1) buy a usb to usb cable and somehow copy all the c drive to another pc. Will this work and how do I do it, dos xcopy?
2) Buy a zip drive. I have about 9 gig in use on the old drive.
3) Put the new drive in and do a "quick restore" and then copy all the files from the other PC?
4) Is there a way to write multiple cd's to make a backup of the entire c drive? I have NT backup loaded.
5) Buy an external drive and move everything to that first?

I've had this PC running the same way for about a year now (everything working fine) in the past week i noticed that 1 of my 4 hard drives started going really slow.
I checked all my IDE Channel and realized that the hard drive had changed to PIO Mode 4. I select it and check the 'Enable DMA' box and hit OK. the properties dialog closes but when i reopen it it's set back to PIO Mode 4.
Any ideas?

A:Hard Drive changes to PIO Mode 4 - can't change back to DMA

It should not be any slower on PIO 4 than it is on any DMA setting, they are capped at the same rate.

Ultra DMA would be different, doubling the transfer rate.

Could you help us out by:
1. Filling out your system specifications entirely?
2. Telling us if you were doing anything when this happened?

My guess is that V: might be in conflict with one of your removable media drives. On my new DELL with a multimedia card, I have a V: which is associated with a SD/mini-mmc/rs drive. There are also drive letters S:, U:, and Z: defined for various things (Z: is my CD/DVD drive).

The way that I found to remane drives and drive letter assignments is a disk management tool. Go to the Start menu, right click on Computer and click on manage. That opens up a menu to a lot of things. The thing you want is near the bottom called disk management.

Once you have the disk management screen displayed, you can right click on any drive volume to get a menu of things to do including change drive letter.

I have a SEVERE problem. My computer stopped recognizing my hard drive, so I took it over to a friend's and hooked it up to his computer, where I was allowed access to my hard drive. However, the vast majority of my files (pictures, word documents, etc) were stored under my personal folder, which was protected by the basic Windows XP password, and now it will not let me into the folder, as I haven't logged into the account it is used to seeing.

I know all my information is there, but I can't get to it. How can I solve this problem and retrieve my information? It may sound melodramatic but I seriously feel like a significant portion of my life is stuck in that folder, and I'd do nearly anything to get it back. I have been having some trouble lately with my home computer, every so often the Pc will crash with a blue screen, with white text saying that a physical memory dump bios is being completed or something like that, i turn it off then back on again and it works fine, however each time this happens my free space on my hard drive reduces!

Sometimes i will have the correct amount which should be something like 123gb free, but sometimes i turn it on and check and i only have 4gb or so free? could something have become dissconnected or something like that? the pc itself works fine but it just seems to crash when i am either trying to load too much at once, or most of the time this occurs when i am unplugging my wireless adapter, or even repairing the connection which does close quite regularly.

Any ideas?

Then last night, I formatted the drive because I wanted to get rid of this annoying virtual drive that would also come up when I plugged it in. So, I formatted it and now it seems I can not change the icon. I do all the autorun.inf etc. Here's a screenshot

Also you can see my other drive icons are gone. Ive reset the icon db before and no other icons have this problem but im not sure if I need to reset it again to get the rest back.

But my external hd is top priorite.

I just got my replacement H.D. back for my HTPC and I ghosted the bad drive and now reinstalled everything onto it. I had to set the drive letter to F: because I already had a drive C: on the computer that I was doing the cloning on. The computer that needs the replacement drive is looking for drive C:.

How can I fix this?

A:Ghosted Hard Drive (How to change back to C:)

If you are running XP go to computer management - disk management and you can reassign drive letters there by right clicking on the drive you want to reassign. You may have to do some moving of drive letters to get everything back to where you want it/or it shoulod be.

Does anyone know how to change the hard drive on the pavillion 15-r012na.  Having removed the screws from the back, it still won't come off.   I need to remove this in order to establish what new hard drive to buy.  Then I need to know how to fit it.

Hi all

I recently bought a new Western Digital external hard drive and mirrored it to my old Lacie external hard drive.

However now the WD hard drive is showing the Lacie logo - and I can't remove it!

I've tried going into "Properties > Customise > Choose File" to "Choose a file to show on this folder icon" however doing this doesn't change the icon at all.

I've also downloaded a program called "My Drive Icon" which is supposed to change the icon, however this didn't work either.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks

I'm working on a computer that currently has virtually no space left on the C:drive, but has over 20GB empty space on the other hard drive partition, the F:drive.

It's a shared computer, and unfortunately people keep downloading programs and other media onto the C:drive, despite my attempts to keep it's volume down. Now I get messages that pop up telling me that my C:drive is dangerously full and could effect the performance of my computer.

Do you know of any way that I could change the size of my hard drive partitions so that I can add more space to my C:drive and decrease the space of my F:drive?

I appreciate your help.

A:How do I change the size of my hard drive partitions

you could use partition magic to resize the drives. this is a trial version, but i cannot see what, if any, limitations it has. it is always very wise to back up data before you mess around with the partition sizes. i have used partition magic a good few times and never had a problem with it.

another option is to uninstall some software and reinstall on F:\ or whichever partition has the empty space.

there could be alot of trash on the C:\ drive as well. i use this program to view what folders are using the most space and very often you'll find user created files, that can be deleted, sitting on the HD.

really what I want is to boot into the vista setup. I can get data files but want to see a program setting for access to internet (if that's possible), and that requires opening the program on vista, not the win7.

Hey all, long time lurker first time poster. This site has helped me change many an icon and other simple customization tasks so I thought I would ask this here. I'm trying to change the color of the meter that shows how full a hard drive is. It seems like it should be simple, but many things never are, and this is one item I haven't been able to find any info on but I know its possible through windowblinds (however, I don't want to run a 3rd party app just for an appearance).

I'm attaching a pic in case I'm not clear about what I mean. I have a very simple black and white theme going on and the light blue bar just kind of messes it up for me. Is this possible with a registry edit or file replacement? Possibly a setting I've missed? Any and all help is appreciated, thanks.

Yes that is possible to change that is just a image.

A:How can I change which internal hard drive runs windows 7?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums.

I'm not sure I understand. These two internal hard disks are in another computer? What operating system is running on this other computer?

Be aware that you can't transfer the MSI Windows installation to another computer for two reasons:

1. It probably won't run.
2. Microsoft does not allow transfer of OEM licenses between computers.

Also, please fill out your system specs completely, so that we can help you better.

I have two 1TB drives, each containing 4 partitions, used for backing up 4 computers. These drives are regularly switched between buildings as part of our backup strategy, always having one off-site. I have assigned drive letters M,N,O,P to respective partitions. When I swap the drives, the drive letters get reset and have to be manually reassigned. I have tried several suggested methods of assigning the drive letters, including USBDM, but get no results.

Computers: HP Compaq 8200 Elite - CMT - 1 x Core i5 2500 / 3.3 GHz - RAM 4 GB - SSD 1 x 160 GB - DVD?RW (?R DL) / DVD-RAM - HD Graphics 2000 - Gigabit Ethernet - Windows 7 Professional 64-bit - Intel vPro Technology
Docking Stations: ICY DOCK MB877SK
Hard Drives: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB

A:Drive letters change when swapping hard drives

Right you are using 2 different drives. Manually Assigning letter to one of them Restrict those letter from being used on the other. When you switch them out the letters have to be manually assigned again. That is how it is suppose to be. Windows Remembers each Drive serial # and or some other drive parameter and sees them as different drives, which they are.

The only way around it is to let Windows assign the letters automatically but that may not work on multiple systems if each of those system have different number of HDDs, Partition on the HDD and or different number of CD/DVD drives install in the systems.

My girlfriends computer has a hard drive that shows as having faults on the computer health scan. I would like to swap out the hard drive for another but obviously don't want to lose the Windows 10 installation. The computer had Windows 8 pre-installed and she later upgraded to Windows 10. Is it possible to swap out the hard drive without losing Windows?

The computer is a Lenovo C260 All-in-One.

A:How do I change the hard drive without losing the Windows install.

Hi, as the drive is faulty, unless you have already have created an image of your drive (which we very strongly recommend e.g. Macrium Reflect (free)), you will need to reinstall Windows.

Normally replacing a drive - even other parts- does not cause an activation issue. If it does, contact your regional MS activation support line.

Hey, I am about to change out the hard drive in an old Voodoo Firebird that has Windows 7 Home Premium on it and I have no factory disk. I want to reinstall the OS completely to erase any data because I am giving it away to a friend so cloning the disk is out of the question.

If I reinstall the same OS will it automatically activate like Windows 10 (the OS was installed legacy with no UEFI option)?

What is the best way to go about installing the OS and will I need to purchase another key? Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

A:Hard drive change and reinstall, will Win7 reactivcate?

Welcome to Seven Forums

No, Windows 7 won`t self activate.

You have to use the activation key on the COA, if it does not have a COA, then you`ll have to buy an OS or just give it to your friend and let him install Windows or Linux (free) himself.

If you are worried about your data, you could consider keeping the drive, hard drives and SSD`s are cheap

I was recently copying a heap of files to my new HP Simple Save external hard drive and all of a sudden it wouldn't let me, saying that it was read only.

I have googled what seems to be everything and tried a range of options including-
-unchecking read only option in properties
-using cmd.exe option to look at storage device and next to read only it said no
-registry files - found some instructions to change read only in storage device options, but there was no storage device options, there was storage, but no option to remove read only
-i have also ensured that i have enough permissions etc..

Some details about my computer are-

Asus F5
Windows Vista
AMD Athlon X2 64 (not sure if this is relevant?)

Would really appreciate some advice if anyone can help me?

A:HP External Hard drive - files are all read only and I can't change it

From what I have heard about those drives, it is a problem with the proprietary setup of the drive. It is classic HP stupidity. The drive is coupled with junkware, which eventually fails to work properly.

I know it sucks, but I would backup everything off that drive. Uninstall all the HP software and drivers related to it. Then go into the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Storage. Kill all the partitions on the drive, setup a new one, reformat, and use it without all the HP junk.

After that, make sure to setup proper permissions on the new volume, and re-copy everything back. If you do not need NTFS security, then format it with exFat.

There should be a law against junkware..

I have a Toshiba EHD 300GB.. When I first connected it, it had its own unique icon.. I decided to format it and now it's icon is a plain white sheet with little squares .. I've tried doing the procedure in this link (Drive Icon Change - Vista Forums) but it still didn't work. I'd love to show you what it looks like, but I don't know how to paste the image I captured.

I've tried renaming it, but that doesn't help. It doesn't even want to be renamed.

I was thinking if there's any other way we could return that unique icon it had and rename it other than the link I followed above.

My EHD works perfectly. I'm just bothered as to why I can't change the icon and its name. Thanks in advance for your advices..

For Windows 7, you might use these tutorials instead.Drive Icon - Change

Double check the item in the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial to see if you may have a autorun.inf file on the root of the external drive that needs to be deleted.

If Option One did not work, then be sure to also try Option Two as well.

I have an HP notebook which runs on Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

I have two external hard drives, both Western Digital Elements. The older one, 1 TB, uses the FAT 32 file system. This is inconvenient since some files I wish to add are larger than 4 GB.

The newer WD, 2 TB, is NTFS, so sometimes I have to use this drive for the larger files that would ordinarily go onto the older drive, based on how I organize my data.

Is there any way to change the older drive from FAT32 to NTFS???? (That is, a solution that "even I" can understand????)

Thanks if you have anything to suggest.

A:[SOLVED] How to change external hard drive file system from FAT32 to NTFS????

You can use the command line tool "convert" to convert a FAT32 volume to NTFS. Example:

convert X: /FS:NTFS

NOTE: This operation is not without risk. Be sure you have a backup of all important files before proceeding. Of course you should have this anyway. Usually the command works without incident but it can fail, leaving the volume in an undefined state. It is a good idea to check the drive with the chkdsk command before proceeding. Do not do this on a drive whose reliability is in question.

Also be aware that the command is non-reversible. Microsoft provides no tools to convert NTFS to FAT32.

I moved about 10GB of files (using Photoshop Elements) from my laptop's hard disk to an external hard drive. I double checked and the files were moved correctly - they don't show up on the laptop and show up on the external hard drive. However, the laptop's C drive does not show an increase in space. I restarted the laptop but it still shows the same free space as prior to the move.

Any idea why? This is with a Lenovo T440s with Win7.

I lost my Event Viewer, and had to do a repair installation to fix it. Unfortunately, during the repair install, Windows decided to rename my second HD as the D: drive... it was K: before that. Now I cannot access any of my docs, pictures, music, or videos through the normal means... they don't show up in libraries or explorer, and apps like Restorator and Sure Thing (CD labeler) cannot find them. I think that means the paths are broken..?

It won't allow me to rename the HD back into K: (it's not listed as available). I can access the data by clicking Computer > D, and I can see the data is there, but its unusable as of now. Any ideas?

A:Can't change hard drive letter to needed letter

Hello Stevie,

To be safe, you should create a restore point before doing this in case you make a mistake and need to use it to do a system restore.

1. If the K letter is not being used by another internal drive, then you can open regedit and navigate to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
2. In the left pane, Take ownership (step 2 in Option Two of METHOD TWO) of the registry key MountedDevices and "Allow" yourself "Full Control" of it as well.

3. In the right pane of MountedDevices, right click on \DosDevices\K: and click on Delete and OK.

4. Restart the computer to apply. You should now be able to change the second hard drive letter to K.

It's a mole hill of a problem, but it is a bit annoying to have to click on my principal drive ("C") every time I'm doing a "save". I have enclosed an excerpt of a screen shot of my "save as" window to display how the default drive being automatically selected is the "D" drive rather than the "C" drive that I use primarily. To be honest, I don't know whether this can be corrected by a software change, or whether it's the way the two hard drives are connected in my computer.

I've used ZAR to recover files from a RAID box that seemed to have been corrupted due to a bad power supply.

You might check it out. It's free. Meaning it will only allow you to recover so many files at a time. I bought it, and like it.

They have a forum that is monitored quite often, from the developer too.

Good luck.

Try installing another operating system onto the disk and seeing if that crashes as well. If it doesn't you probably have a bad Windows cd. I suggest trying Kubuntu, a version of Linux meant to look somewhat like Windows (You can click here to skip directly to the download page). Just remember to actually install the thing. Most Linux operating systems can be ran directly from the cd without any need to be installed onto a hard disk. There's usually a program on the desktop that will install the system for you. If it runs properly for a week or two, get a new Windows disk. If it crashes just as much as Windows did, get a new computer.

Also, how much RAM does your computer have? If it's very low (256-512 megs or less) it can sometimes cause these kinds of crashes too.

I see it can be done from an installed to an external, but can it be done in reverse, taking the external cased hard drive and cloning it to an internal? The old hard drive is from an xp laptop, and I can aquire another xp laptop if I can clone this way. Perhaps if I set the enclosure hard drive as master? All ideas are greatly appreciated. Many thanks

I have two laptops, a ThinkPad T30 and a Latitude C840 (they are both working with XP SP2, except the T30 doesn't have a screen). I'd like to move the T30's drive into the C840, but when I do this, the C840 will hang right after the BIOS screen (incl. the XP CD's Press a key to boot off the CD if I tell it to boot from the disc drive first).

My first thought was to try Recovery Console from the XP CD. I can log into the install, and I've already tried fixmbring and fixbooting it. This doesn't help.

This leaves the option of the drivers not being right. I installed the C840 chipset drivers, nothing.

I'd really rather not go on a wild goose chase trying to figure out what'll get things up and running, so can you guys gimme a suggestion?

A:Moved hard drive and cannot boot; hard drive accessable from Recovery Console

You can't simple move one drive from one machine to another because the drivers are specific to the hardware. Did you receive recovery CDs for the Latitude? If so, you could use them to "restore" it to its factory default with the new drive. This may actually be on a partition of the hard drive.
As an alternative, you could create an image of the original drive and restore it to the new one using some freeware such as DriveImage XML. To restore the image to the new drive, you'll need to boot to a bootable CD using something like UBCD4WIN and restore the image from somewhere on your network.

A:Hard Drive Bootup Problems, Help required - Windows not seeing new hard drive Options

This is what I would do to enhance performance and storage strategy:

1. Use the 20g for the os and housekeeping utes such as av, spyware, etc only, nothing else goes on that drive.
2. Use the 160g for apps installs.
3. Use the 200g for data.

This might get you past the bios/firmware/os/drive letter issue and make better use of the drives. The 20 isn't really good for storage anymore, but would be great for an os/system ute drive. It's performance is less than the other drives, but that's ok, most of the os will stay in ram anyway after boot, you won't make any real diff having a faster os drive.
You might want to place a pagefile on each drive so pageing can occur concurrently too.

Hey guys, I was working with my grandfathers computer. The computer would not boot, it kept getting the BSOD with "Unmountable Boot Volume" At the top. Annoyed, I decided I was going to just back up whatever files were on it (Just his favorites, he has absolutely no documents or anything else) plugging his HD into my home PC as a slave and copying them to my flashdrive. Then I would reinstall XP Home on his Desktop, and use the flashdrive to put back his files...Sounds easy enough right? NO!!!!.....Problem is, his user account on the computer (Ralph), was Password Protected so now when I try to access any of his files (using Windows 7) I get a message saying Access Is Denied. How do I get around this. It is not possible to boot his old computer to take off the password. Are his files recoverable?
Thanks for any help!

A:Recovering hard drive files from unbootable, password protected hard drive?

You don't have to do all that to overcome an unmountable boot volume error...try running chkdsk /r command on the drive.

Start/Run...type chkdsk X: /r (where X is the drive letter assigned by XP and with spaces between k and X: and X: and /) and then hit Enter.

I just installed a brand new Western Digital Hard Drive 160 gig. I partitioned it with FDISK, then formated, then did a clean install of windows XP. Everything was fine until after i finished the installation, and i tried to connect my old maxtor 20 gig so i could transfer some files over, and the computer stopped reading both hard drives. When i start it up, the computer can't boot from either drive. I've tried disconnecting each of the drives and only booting with one connected, with no luck. I also tried changing the gray strip, I can't remember what its official name is, but that didnt help either. When I go into BIOS and let it auto detect my drives, It wont recognize either of the drives.

A:Scanning dirty hard drive from clean hard drive in same computer

Hello, and Welcome
Detach the drive without the FBI virus. On another computer download Kaspersky Rescue Disk. Burn the iso to a CD. On a Windows 7 computer simply right click the iso and select Burn Disk Image. Connect the computer with the FBI virus via a Ethernet cable so Kaspersky can update it's definitions. Boot the disk and then open the terminal and type windowsunlocker (all lower case) shown in this guide. Then run the antivirus on the Kaspersky disk

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Galilee Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about wanting to restore your PC and wanted to help -- but need more information. Your PC did not come with Win10 preinstalled, so if you were to order HP Recovery Media and use that, it would restore the original operating system, drivers, and HP utilities.  I presume this is NOT what you want, right? So, while you can make Win10 media to recover your PC, it would be a clean-install and nothing would be preserved. You can make such media using this tool: Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help Note that when you go do download and build install media, the tool defaults to matching what is already installed on your PC (as in, Home for Home, 64-bit for 64-bit).  While you CAN change these settings, do NOT. If you do, the resulting media will be different and will force you to enter a NEW product code! Good Luck

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

A:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

I have an old 320GB hard drive that's dying and slowing my computer down. The OS is on a 20GB partition. I want to copy that partition onto an empty, 110GB hard drive.

Will the data copied be corrupted? am I better off re-installing windows?

How can I do this?

A:Cloning a hard drive partition onto a smaller hard drive

Hi there

1) download something like FREE macrium and boot it up.
2) Image the OS
3) Restore the image to the new HDD --if it's a Laptop you can do it with a USB==>SATA cable without installing the new HDD first
4) swap the drives if it's a laptop
5) Boot.

Remember though if the Windows system partition exists to copy that as well as the "C" partition.

The rest of your data (User data etc) on the HDD - just save anywhere with File explorer / Windows explorer to wherever you want to keep it -- there's no reason why you couldn't keep it on the old HDD -- if it's an INTERNAL HDD you can get a powered SATA / IDE case and connect via USB or SATA.

I suspect you are installing an SSD -- EXCELLENT MOVE -- you won't be in any way disappointed. You can connect the 110GB SDD to the computer via a USB==>SATA cable - very cheap so you can restore to SSD BEFORE physically changing the drives. Even if it isn't an SSD the methodology applies -- ensure though the BOOT partition is ACTIVE !! or the system won't boot.
