Preferred Solution: Sound card not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

changed integrated sound card for Sound Blasster Live but it is not working right. It shows up in the device mnager, but when I go to Start>>Settings>>Control Panel>>Sounds & Audio Devices, it shows that there is NO AUDIO DEVICES.....why. I am running Windows XP Pro, on a P4-1.8, which has an Asus motherboard model P4S333.

A:changed integrated sound card for Sound Blasster Live but it is not working right

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First. Go into your bios, and disable your onboard sound, and save and exit bios.

Once your computer has booted up, go into contol panel, and double click the sounds and audio devices icon.

Click on the audio tab, and set the sound playback device to your new soundcard.

Do the same for the sound recording device. Click on the voice tab and do the same. Click apply/ok.

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for your new soundcard, and that your speakers are plugged into the new soundcard.

Hi all,

I recently bought a relatively expensive sound card on Amazon and after the second boot of my PC with the card installed and working my on board LAN card decided to not work throwing error: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
The card IS enabled in the BIOS and I HAVE disabled the on-board sound card.

LAN Adapter Details:
-Make and Model: Realtek RTL8137/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
-Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
-Driver Version: 6.112.123.2014
-Driver Date: 23/01/2014

A:Realtek network card not working with external sound card installed

This sounds like an IRQ problem, which is strange because modern PCs can usually resolve these conflicts automatically. But seeing that your system is a Pentium 4, maybe the motherboard is old enough to still be dealing with the issue.

One thing you could try is to perform a Clear CMOS procedure. This will force the motherboard to re-enumerate all the devices and will often solve IRQ conflicts. Note all your current BIOS settings
Shut down the computer > remove the power cord.
Remove the 3v motherboard battery.
Move the CLRTC jumper from pins 1-2 to 2-3.
Touch a metal part of the case and Press and Hold the reset button for approx. 30 seconds to discharge all power from the board.
Put the CLRTC jumper back on pins 1-2.
Replace the 3v battery > replace the power cord > boot.
Immediately go back into BIOS and reset all your preferred settings. If the CLRTC worked you will need to reset the date and time in BIOS.
If that does not work then you could try to get the 2 cards to play nice together by installing them in different locations, if you have the extra slots.

Keep in mind that when removing any card it is important to remove it from Device Manager first. Remove it from Device Manager > shut down > then physically remove the card > then restart into Windows > then you can shut down perform the next procedure.

Sometimes you can simply install the newer card in another PCI/PCIe slot and that will resolve the conflict. (You must remove the device from Device Manager in order to change the slot)

Other times you might need to remove both cards, then install the newer card first and the older card second.

Let's see if any of that helps.

A:motherboard sound not working, sound card not recognize, help please

It sounds as though the driver for the sound card doesnt work on windows 7. Also I think that the driver for the motherboard audio will most likely not work either. It is hard to find drivers for windows 7 because hardly any one is using it yet. Have a look for your sound card drivers and see if they are ok to be used on windows 7.

Hi as stated in the subject I am unable to hear any sound from my speakers since upgrading to the windows bit I followed the other post that I found on this but I still cannot hear any sound I have a dell inspiron The hardware ids from the device manager are HDAUDIO FUNC amp VEN EC amp DEV amp SUBSYS E amp REV HDAUDIO FUNC amp VEN EC amp DEV amp SUBSYS E I have installed the realtek drivers and they as working but I still get nothing but a slight hiss from my speakers I have tried them on my laptop and they work fine Does anybody know what might be causing this I am half tempted to get a new sound card but I am reluctant as it says my existing one is working it just seems to have forgotten to tell the speakers If card sound drivers no but as still show working Sound anybody knows a fix for this I really would be eternally grateful Many thanks Mike

A:Sound card drivers show as working but still no sound

Let's start by right clicking the speaker icon in your system tray and select playback devices from the options...right clik on the speakers and set as default. You can select to disable the independent headphone jacks if the speakers are plugged to the sound card. Then clik on properties and go to the levels tab at top. Set the slider to 100%. Go back to the playback devices window and select Configure button. Test the individual speakers by clicking on them one at a time.

Dell OptiPlex 9020 All In OneWindows 7 ProfessionalThis computer is only a few months old, worked fine up till about a week ago.  Nothing new has been installed.  i went to the dell support page and typed in my service tag and updated sound driver and video drivers.  still no sound unless i disable the sound card and then enable it again.

A:Sound not working unless i disable and the enable sound card

If only a few months old it may have a defect. Normally parts should last for years and not change in a few months.Still, to eliminate a possible software issue, use the system restore to go back to a earlier time. Try two days back, then four days and so on until you find the critical point where something was changed.IMO you must report this to Dell as soon as possible.

A:Sound not working, suspect sound card

I would do the following. download the latest driver from your motherboard manufacturer. Go to device manager and uninstall the device driver, then uninstall the device. restart the computer. Ignore the new hardware found wizard(cancel out). run the driver program. Check to see that the device is now present in device manager. check your sound. If nothing is coming out check your sound properites in the control panel to be sure your device is selected as the playback device, the volumes are up and there are no mute buttons checked.

edit: if none of that works you may need to add in a sound card to an expansion slot.

Hi there

Could you provide me with the exact make and model of your computer along with the make and model of the sound card if you are using one separate from the one that comes on the motherboard?

Also, what OS are you running?

When did the problem start? Have you installed/uninstalled anything lately?

If you go to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices is the Mute button checked?

Under the Audio Tab , what device is selected for Sound Playback? Click on the Volume button under that drop down menu, are any of the Mute checkboxes selected?

You need to fill out your system specs, ( bottom left of your posting window ).

The screenshots you posted: one is too small to read, and the other does not give any really useful information.

You can get some info on A8S-X downloads etc here;

I'm not sure what the problem is. My computer was recently reformatted and perhaps the sound card was not reinstalled. In itunes when I hit "play" nothing happens, I thought this might be an itunes problem. But when I installed realplayer it also wouldn't work. I get this message: "Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it"

I reinstalled soundblaster and when I rebooted my computer I got this message from the AudioHQ Taskbar: "A required DevCon32.DLL cannot be found. Make sure that the file is in the correct directory". I did a search for the file but it is nowhere to be found on my computer.

How can I fix this?

I have Windows XP and a "SigmaTel High Definition Audio" sound card. The other day my sound card stopped working and I found out that in the device manager, both my sound card and "Multimedia Audio Controller" had unknown drivers. I was able to find the drivers for my sound card, but "Multimedia Audio Controller" is still showing up as unknown. Can anyone point me to a website where I can download the drivers for Multimedia Audio Controller?

Thanks!

I think i found hte problem, but i have no idea how to fix it. I tried running winamp today just for the heck of it, to see if it would work. When i pushed play for the mp3 file, it said "MMSYSTEM032 The specified format cannot be translated or supported. Use the capabilities function to view supported formats" It also does this for .wav files. What would cause windows to suddenly view all sound files as unsupported types?

Good Afternoon,

My brother was on his computer, listening to music etc perfectly the other day. He then shut it down, moved the box, the monitor and a pair of headphones to a different location (where it is to stay) and plugged it in, wired it up etc. Computer turns on, everything is fine except no sound.

The sound card is "on-board", built onto the motherboard, the driver is up-to-date (at least it says it is when you try to update it)

Why has it stopped working?

He went to a shop and bought a cheapish one for ?30 and got a tech savvy guy to install it but that didnt work. Now, the tech guy, my brother and myself are stumped.

Anyone have any ideas?

Did you check if Windows Audio service is running?
Start-type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) and hit enter.
Scroll down to Windows Audio service and check if its running.
Try restarting it as well.
You could do some tests on the audio from Start-type "dxdiag" click No if prompted and go to Sound tab.
There you can test the sound card.

I have a Creative Soundblaster X-fi Notebook sound card and a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows XP. The audio has stopped working. Both the speakers connected to my sound card and the computer speakers do not work. When I go to manage audio devices in the control panel and test the sound card speakers, i hear the tone, they also play all system noises (the various dings, including the ding of an incoming IM) but don't play iTunes or Windows Media Player. The computer thinks its playing sound, but no sound comes out. Thanks for trying to help.

A:Help! Sound card not working properly

Hi
You can further test your sound card by running a program called dxdiag. Just go to start>run and type in dxdiag. Please run the sound tests in there. If you hear the sound playing on all of the tests, then let me know and we can troubleshoot further. Thanks

untouchable4,
Since it is a Gateway I am going to assume that you did not get any drivers with your puter.
Is the driver for your sound card a windows driver?
If you do in fact have a onboard or intergrated sound card perhaps the motherboard manufactuers website has some sort of audio driver you could download and run. To find out what motherboard or sound card you have you can download and run Belarc Advisor
It does not aways list motherboards, but you could see if it list a sound card.
Last resort try to track down mtherboard manufacter on gateways website.

A:Audio/Sound Card not working?

Hello,
My name is Krishna and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. Based on your description, the issue is more likely related to the audio drivers. Depending on your system model and operating system, you can download and install the latest audio drivers from www.support.dell.com
Also, Microsoft has created a detailed step-by-step troubleshooter for common audio problems. The troubleshooter detects the version of Windows your computer is running and adapts troubleshooting to match. You can run the troubleshooter from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/no-sound-in-windows .Hope this helps.

I have a Compaq PC with Windows XP Home SP2 an integrated SoundMax sound card. It is almost 4 years old.

The sound card has always worked fine, until recently. However, now it will stop generating sound (ie., using iTunes or RealPlayer) periodically. Then if I re-boot it starts working again... for a while. Then it stops again.

I have tried updating the driver several times, and the sound will work fine for a while, but the problem is still happening.

Any advice on how to diagnose the cause would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

A:Sound Card drive is not working

What you need to do is install drivers for the device. I'm not sure what exactually your situation is, but I'm guessing you just installed the sound card or a new operating system? If you just purchased the sound card, there should be a CD in the box it came in with the drivers you need. Or you could always go to the manufacture of the cards' Web site and download the drivers there.

If this information doesn't do it for ya, post back with what kind of card you are attempting to get to work and how you got into this mess in the first place.

This is a Vista issue because the unit works fine on an XP machine.

Vista seem to recognize it and install the drivers when it's plugged in, including the message that the device has installed successfully.

The only thing I can think of is that the drivers are bad. I've remove the device from device manager and nothing seems to help.

Any ideas?

Does it have custom drivers? You should use the ones that the manufacturer made, as they know what they are trying to achieve, where Microsoft makes general drivers for every possible soundcard :P

Check with Dell for updated drivers for your soundcard. Chances are you are not the only one having this problem. You can always delete the soundcard from your system in device manager and then have Vista search for new hardware after a fresh boot. Vista will probably find the soundcard during the boot process and try to install the proper drivers.

Hey guys, I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Prof 32bit, after installing it I relised I can't get surround sound with my onboard sound like I was able to with XP. I went out and bought be a genius 5.1 surround sound PCI card.

Now the thing is...before installing the genius drivers, Should I first unstalled the drivers that came with win7 and if i should how do I go about doing that.

I installed it thow, but at the moment when I enable 5.1 sound in my controle pannel only the front speakers work while playing music through WMP, I do however get surround sound in games and dvds, to get sound through all the speakers I have to select stereo sound again in the controle panel.

When I make any changes on the sound program provided by genius nothing happens. Think there might be a driver clash or something.

Hello,
I just installed a creative 5.1 channel soundblaster soundcard. The problem is that when I connect it up to my 5.1 sound system, the subwoofer is not working. Everything else is working, including the centre speaker which uses the same jack as the subwoofer.

Here are the details:
Sound card: Creative SoundBlaster 5.1 It has 4 jacks, 3 is for output (Front, Rear, Centre/Sub) and the other one is for line in and microphone.

Sound System: iBall booster 5.1

i have checked all the connection

I tested the speakers with a 5.1 dvd player. Everything is working, including the subwoofer.

I recently downgraded to Windows XP on my Toshiba Satellite laptop, and while the computer is running miles better than it did on Vista, certain drivers such as my wireless card and sound do not work. I'm assuming they were probably deleted when I wiped my hard drive and installed xp. However, I am not clear on how to go about making them work again. The inability to use wireless is a particulary big pain in the butt. Any suggestions?

What would cause a sound device to be listed as working properly in the "device manager" utility but no sound device is available in "sounds and audio devices" utility?

Also, Windows will not boot in normal mode. It freezes on the load screen.
It works fine in Safe mode with networking, which I am using now. Thanks.

A:Sound card working properly but not recognized!

Since you can boot into safe mode...I would do so and remove the sound device drivers. I would then see if XP is able to boot normally.

I would do that based on the premise that they are corrupt and incapable of working properly.

Device Manager cannot be relied upon to provide clues that driver files may be damaged...but the fact that the system boots into safe mode but not normally gives a clue that it is a driver problem. Might as well start with the sound drivers.

What sounds and audio devices might you be referring to?

The key question is whether the sounds function is working properly (e.g., you actually hear), not what some utility reflects.

A:Integrated Sound Card from Realtek Not Working please help

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

My thought on this would be to get another HDD.
Set it as Primary, do a clean install of xp pro.
You should be able to sort out the sound drivers.
We have the latest here @ TS, (top of this page, dead center)
Once you have stable install, slave your original Hdd to gain access
to your files.

I could use some help here my old headset had given up on me the last ear phone had blown out, so I decided to buy a new headset now this headset has the Green and Pink cables, My old headset had USB and I have tried so many things to try and get this to work but to no sign of it working I have almost given up,

It just does not detect the headset at all nothing Ive tried device manager or what not, I have checked my sound card and I am getting really frusterated with this headset,

I really need help I want to be able to use at a headset in game,

I have a LivCON MM30

Does this have anything to do with my sound card plus when you search LivCON MM30 you won't get much.

A:Headset not working relating sound card?

Assuming onboard audio, is it enabled in the bios and are the drivers for it installed? Checked in the Vista audio playback and recording settings that the sound card (and not the USB headset) are both set as the default devices?

One thing you need to remember is that a USB headset in no way whatsoever makes use of a sound card (either onboard or an actual card), as it usually has its own DSP and drivers (or depending on the headset, just use Windows own USB drivers).

Hi. I have a Darla sound card for recording music. It has always worked great. I tried to install it in my new Dell Dimension 4700 (XP Home SP2, 1G RAM, 2.8G P4, 160G HDD). The computer says that the card is working properly, but the sound is all static and scratch and video is stop and start. If I uninstall the card and use the on-board sound, everything works fine. The problem, of course, is I need the Darla card to record music.

Any ideas on a fix?

Also, is there anyway to keep the Darla card in my old computer and set up that computer as a slave to the new, so that I could access the old hard drive and use the Darla card but not have to switch from computer to computer??

Thanks!!

Hi,

I just installed my new 4850 card and now my sound is no longer working. I tried updating both drivers as well as a hotfix that was listed on the ATI support site, but so far nothing is working. Any suggestions?

A:Solved: Sound not working with 4850 ATI card

Ok, I fixed it (figures, right after I post this). Anyway, apparently the card is trying to take precedence over my on-board sound (yes I have on-board sound for my mobo, no card). So, I after giving up hope I went to my BIOS and checked to see if my sound was enabled. Sure enough it was set to auto. Therefore I swtiched it to enabled, booted up and it works. I feel kind of stupid for not thinking about that.

A:Mic not working while using Steelseries usb sound card and headphones

Is the Siberia USB sound card set as the default recording device? As the PC sound card works, that says the PC sound card is set as the Default recording device.

As you are using a separate sound card, the PC's sound should be disabled in the BIOS so it does not conflict and interfere.

I recently upgraded to DirectX 9. In this case it was not a good idea, as I've lost sound. I keep getting an error message when I shut down pertaining to Ddhelp. Searching MS, Google, and TSG, I have determined that the problem has to do with an incompatability with my soundcard Creative AWE 64, and the lack of driver support for it that will correct this problem.

Running Win 98 on a dinosaur Compaq 233 w/64 RAM (max). Running the DirectX.diag it indicates the incompatability problem. Therefore, I have determined that I must return to a previous edition of DirectX. there does not appear to be any method for doing this, other than using the extractor tool, and reinstalling an earlier version.

I'd appreciate any thoughts, ideas, experiences concerning this matter.

I have installed my creative soundblaster card into another tower... This sound card has worked just fine up until the switch, I disabled the onboard, reserved IRQ5 for it, as I don't have any printers or anything in line to use that IRQ, and installed the drivers.

it's not working. In device manager, it says the device is enabled and working properly, but the windows audio service refuses to start, giving the error message "no module found", and the same message is in the sounds and audio control panel module.

Please help? I'm getting severely agitated and I miss my sound.

Hi.
OS: Windows 7 64
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy

I was playing a game on ventrilo and got up from my seat and tripped over my headset cord.
I have a Sennheiser PC350. I didn't pull it out of the ports. So I checked and I could still hear out of everything.
But nobody could hear me. So I unplugged my headset and tried again. Microphone wasn't working.
So I tried a different headset. Brand new gaming headset out of the package. Sound worked. Microphone didn't.

Is it possible I broke my soundcard? I cant see how.
Is there anything else I can check?

A:Microphone stopped working. sound card?

Assuming you are connected directly to the sound card, yes, it could be damaged.

Enable the onboard audio chipset and test using front or rear panel ports. That will at least determine if you have a faulty sound card or headset.

Hi to all
I have just got my tower back after my son upgraded me to windows 7-32 and just linked my speakers into the system and my sound card is not working,It is a Hercules muse XL
MPN LWHA521-t9,A bit old but it also allows my disabled son to use the microsoft sidewinder wheel for his games,I have looked in the DxDiag and card is not showing,So I obviously need a driver compatible with windows 7,After looking on various sites and always ending up with Babylon toolbars after declining the download I have turn to you guru's here,So any suggestions would be very grateful
Dave.

A:Windows 7 upgrade,Now sound card not working

Older sound cards, that worked OK in Windows XP can be a problem in Vista/Win7/Win 8 as the XP drivers are not compatible. Some sound functions are handled differently and require Vista/Win7 specific drivers. Many older devices are not compatible (hardware and/or internal firmware) and thus a prime reason no compatible drivers are available.

Unfortunately, if you can't find any drivers, you will have to replace the sound card with a Win 7 compatible device. Same way with a new, compatible, USB connected gaming controller. The trials and tribulations of upgrading older hardware to new OS systems that are designed primarily for newer hardware.

If this is a game port joystick you may be able to use a USB/game port adapter but there are no guarantees with these - some devices work satisfactorily and some do not. That would probably less costly than replacing the sidewinder wheel.

Hello everyone, I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Windows Vista. I recently bought a USB audio sound card (since my computer's headphone jack was damaged).

The volume control on my computer has always worked fine, but when I plug in the sound card I'm no longer able to control the volume via the sound icon on the taskbar. The sound card's volume always comes in full blast, and I can only lower it through the controls in the program it's currently running (i.e. the volume control in a YouTube video). Therefore, when I try to control it directly through my computer it doesn't work.

Is this a common problem? Is there any way I can get this fixed or configured, or is there a problem with the sound card?

A:USB Sound Card - system volume control not working

As this is a software issue my response has to be quite limited. Basically, you may need to check a box specifying your default audio device in your sound settings. Hope this helps, if not drop your question into the software section.

I just re-installed Windows XP Professional from the CD. I did not use the recovery CD that came with the computer because it restored the system to its original state which means lots and lots of useless software. However, the clean installation does not have, that I know, drivers for my sound card, so I cannot hear anything from the speakers and when I go to Control Panel, System, Hardware Settings, the Sound Devide, PCI Simple Controller, and Video Controller all have a yellow question mark. Is there a way to get drivers for these devices without having to resort to a re-install using the factory CD? Thanks in advance.

A:Sound card not working after service pack install

So what hold on, you uninstalled what?

If you uninstalled the sound card physically, then put it back in, windows should recongnise it, install proper drivers and may fix problem.

If you uninstalled it virtually, then windows should detect it next time u start up, if it doesnt it might be faulty.

If you disabled it in the BIOS, enable it again.

ac97 is onboard sound. Crap at best, but still decent. Hmm that contridicts itself =/

A:Mixer For Sound Blaster 5.1 Audio Card Not Working In Vista

If I'm understanding that you're talking about the Software Mixer, you may want to install in compatability mody for XP.
This is done by right clicking on the File and choose properties. From there, click on the compatability tab and check the
apropriate box. (Select XP Service Pack 2) This may solve the issue. It may also be that you want to run with visual theme
disabled.

I just upgraded my Windows XP Toshiba Satellite laptop to Windows 7 and now the sound card, and the wifi feature (where it looks for signals) does not work! Is there a way to fix this, or maybe even revert back to XP. I didn't make a back-up disc.. but if there is a way to do so, I'd like to. Thanks!

A:Sound card and wifi stopped working once I upgraded to Windows 7?

Update the drivers to run them. Go to computer>system properties>device manager and look for updates for the audio and network adapter drivers

hi
i installed a new video card into my computer, and ever since sound has stopepd working, i tried uninstalling all my sound drivers
and could not manage to install them again
so i made a partition, to back up my data to do system restore, half way through the partition, my comp went into stand by and my hard drive became corrupt, i managed to get Fdisk and format my hard drive
now i back onto windows vista ultimate but now again i have no sound, and i dont have any of the Original HP software.
when i first got the pc. it came with a Realtek Sound icon in the task bar, but i instaleld many realtek drivers for my pc and none of them are making my sound work.
please can someone help me
if you wish to do remote desktop to help me .. add me on msn : [email protected]

Hi bubbleduck,

Welcome to the forum.

Your new graphic card has built in sound and has taken over from your old sound source.
