Preferred Solution: Not sure what to upgrade this Christmas...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How does all that stuff look? I am using my existing RAM and my existing video card (for now) but in the future will be upgrading to a X1900GT or similar. And should 768MB of RAM be enough, because i have never used 768mb not while gaming or anything.

Hi i found a good deal for a BFG 7600GS graphics card with 512 megs of ram. i was wondering if it was worth the buy, or if i should just wait for more prices to go down. If i got this card would i be able to play the most recent games on high settings?

I need some expert advice. I was positive I wanted an xbox 360 elite, but since there are so many problems going on I don't know if I should get stuff for my pc. I don't really know the best upgrades I could get for $400-500 that would give me the best results for playing the most demanding games, so this is where i need you guys and girls.

A:Christmas

Are you talking about the whole pc for $400-$500? Your not just looking for a cheap stuff if you wanna go for gaming. You'll need to find out the cpu, ram and video card they have.

I bought my son a gaming desktop from Newegg,i This is what it is: BUYPOWER Desktop PC T.T Series NE623FX AMD FX-Series FX-6300 (3.50GHz) 16GB DDR3 1TB HDD AMD Radeon R7 370 4GB Windows 10 Home 64-Bit. I had it up and running last night, I installed the Charter Security Suite, when the computer went to restart, there was nothing. When I turn it on it starts with "MSI Motherboard page" and then goes to a page that says "using PCIE Gen 2" next line says "Can't find any devices" then it goes to a quick page that doesn't last long enough to read it, followed by a page with the Windows symbol that will sometimes say "preparing for auto repair" Any ideas? It didn't come with a Windows disc but it does have two MCI "drivers and utilities" discs.

plz help....i do not profess to know much about computers........my child wishes to be able to film skateboarding, take camera to computer, hookup, see the new film on screen and then, with appropriate downloaded software, edit that film to show friends, put on you tube?, do all kinds of editing. My problem is I don't know what would be required to purchase at the store to enable this ability. I guess i am asking, "What specs do I need inside the laptop?", ram, memory, graphics card, drivers, etc. (all words i have heard recently but do not necessarily understand). Thanks in advance, kid11111

Please download and run the TSG Sysinfo utility.
http://static.techguy.org/download/SysInfo.exe

Copy the information from that into your reply and we should have most of the critical information about your "specs".

I'm assuming that you already have the camera side of the task sorted out.

Hello,

This Christmas I'd like to get my with some sort of software program that helps prospective writers. She writes a lot, and is really good at it, so, if I can, I'd like to encourage it. I guess I'm looking for ideas to find some sort of software that would help her with her writing.

Thanks

Not bad. Certainly not gaming worthy, but not bad at all for a budget system. Nice one getting everything on sale too Should last you a good while. If you're building a new system with those parts though, I'd have to assume that the system you have now is pretty dated

Hi and welcome to techspot.com,

First off YOU NEVER WANT A PSU FROM A CASE

Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131578
ASUS is one of the most respicted brands and it offers SLi for future upgrades

The core2duo are currently the best dual-core CPUS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005
In modern day and time we no longer work off of a clock speed or (GHz) to represent the speed of the CPU.

PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103937

Video Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150195
it has a mail-in rebate that brings the price down to 200

RAM (memory)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145564
2 512mb moduals are better then 1gb because you can run them in dual-channel for 2x the standard bandwith.

Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129017
104 after mail-in rebate

I am awsoming that you are going to use your old moniture, keyboard, mouse and hard drive.

You are going to need an oem version of windows becuase the windows on your old drive won't work with your current setup do to driver conflict.

Also ask any questions ????

A:A Christmas 'Hijack This' Log

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Make sure to select the Autoclean option. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINNT\system32\xpsp2fw.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\nlsfuncs.exe

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Something Christmas Nasty for of it I am Something Nasty for Christmas .... running XP Home with SP It started a few weeks ago when out of the blue Something Nasty for Christmas .... my computer rebooted itself for no reason Immediately the first thing I noticed was that all Google search result links were being redirected to bizarre and random websites - as soon as I saw the link was being redirected I didn t hang around to see what website would load This happened on both IE and Firefox But this wasn t every time I turned my computer on I could always tell if redirection was going to happen as a strange image would appear at the top of the Google search results page - made up of the Google logo and a couple of dozen Google icons like the back and forwards arrows shopping trolley cart icons etc If this image didn t appear the results Something Nasty for Christmas .... would not redirect I installed both Malwarebytes and Spybot S amp D - these both found and fixed several things but the Google links were still being redirected on and off During the scans I noticed that a HelpAssistant folder had popped up in Documents amp Settings I checked it out and lo and behold it had been created at the exact moment my computer had rebooted I was able to manually delete the folder and its contents but it would reappear on boot up Currently Google seems to be fine but I refuse to believe the problem just went away by itself If I turn my PC on with the modem already on AVG picks up c windows system services exe trying to make a connection to the internet Of course I block it but the HelpAssistant folder reappears If I start the computer with the modem off turning it on a few minutes after boot up no HelpAssistant folder appears and services exe doesn t try to connect or at least AVG doesn t pick it up However some things I try to run like my music sequencer software Reason last for a few minutes before the whole computer falls over - it gets slower and slower over the course of a few minutes and then freezes and a constant beep sounds from the PC internal speaker until I turn the machine off usually swearing at the time All current scans say my computer is fine although AVG seems reluctant to let me update Malwarebytes I think that basically covers the problem - any help would be much appreciated Regards Alex

A:Something Nasty for Christmas ....

Hi again,

Now my computer is having trouble booting up - if I start it normally it freezes at the welcome screen. Safe mode works, and I managed to get it to work in normal mode by selecting "last known good configuration" on the F8 start up menu, but I suspect there isn't long left until it explodes completely.

Please help!

Alex

For all the lucky members who will receive or buy a new computer for Christmas be sure to Dont install the antivirus software that pops up with instuctions to install Should be done at the end and this software although probably free for a while will cost money down the road and is probably not the best Windows updates should be done immediately as you are vulnerable to problems until updated be sure to include office updates Adobe reader should be updated the most recent version is a sandbox version which reduces virus vulnerablity to your PDF files This is also the oppotunity to Computer Your New Christmas download Adobe Flash Player Download an alertative browser ie FF or Chrome etc In the event of problems with IE Remove any unwanted program bloat They will slow up your computer and probably cost money in the future Download your antivirus Microsoft Security Essentials is suggested Now enjoy the internet In addition follow these maintenance instructions Suggestions for Proper Maintenance

I bought my daughter an ipod 8gb for Christmas. I gave my husband a 2gb for Christmas last year. I had trouble installing itunes in January but finally got it to work. For the new itunes I keep getting Windows intaller error. I have tried to uninstall itunes (unsuccessfully as far as I can tell) and anything to do with Apple. Nothing I do works. I installed itunes 8.0 just fine on my work pc but no luck on my hp pavillion/amd processor. I don't know what else to do. Can anyone help?

Paste this into the address field of your explorer and hit Enter - see what you find. It's a Christmas present from me.

When it says All Tasks, drag it from the explorer address field onto the desktop and you have a shortcut.

Just got back to work after christmas to find my PC won't turn on. I pressed the power button upon arrival and got to the windows login screen. I put in my password as usual and then as windows was loading up the screen went blank and didn't come back on. Now every time i turn the machine on it won't even post. I have swapped out the RAM, the graphics card and checked the HDD to see if it was any of them, all make no difference. It seems to be a Mobo failure. I don't want to start going about changing the Mobo until i am sure that it is at fault. Any suggestions?

Thanx.

A:Christmas hijack- Please Help

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Download FixAgent and unzip it. Run FixAgent.exe. It should fix something. If nothing is fixed, skip to the next step for the HijackThis fixes. If something is found, also download home_missing_114 and unzip it. Run the Home winkey missing batch file. Remember: ONLY run home_missing_114 if FixAgent found something.

Download AboutBuster and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Do not run it yet.

Download DelDomains.inf
Right-click and select..... Save Target As

To use: Right-click and select....... Install (no need to restart)
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone"

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINNT\crwv32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe
C:\WINNT\javakk32.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

P2P Networking

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\system32\qxcxw.dll/sp.html#59130

Im interested in getting some books for Christmas
Im currently learning all about viruses ? malware ? spyware ? adware.
I would love to get a good book or two and not some dud by mistake.

I will be using them to advise my boss on virus protection and spyware protection.

Malware by ed skoudis was recommended
Viruses reveled by c david harly looks to old?
The art of computer virus research and defense by peter szor looks good but not out yet.

Any suggestions ?

Problem Fix IE This My this issue occuring a few years ago on other computers with obviously earlier versions of IE gt I seach for images using Google regularly Sometimes to add to a text comment for extra explanation or gag effect in an email or web page blah blah blah Alright so here is what happens and it drives me CRAZY when it does because i cannot by any means fix it when it does You click on an image Google opens the referring page and there is a bar across the top of the winsow that deatils the name of the file and the option to quot see image full-size quot Here is an example Click me OK now when you click on the small preview or quot see image full-size quot it's SUPPOSED to open in a new IE window Fix My IE Problem This Christmas! LOL and that's it Ta da Simple When something goes screwy the following happens You get to the referring page with the Google info bar across the top You click the image almost always a photo in a blog for some reason and instad of simply opning the picture in a new IE window you're confronted with a quot File Download Box quot Hey guess what if i Fix My IE Problem This Christmas! LOL want to download it i'll right click the damn thing and quot Save As quot than-you very much IE just open the amp picture IN IE So yeah the dialog box appears and when you click open IE then redirects to using the default image viewer on the computer Now imagine this happening dozens of times when you just want IE to open the photo in IE and be done with it Check it out with this example Click the car picture in the upper left corner and see the dumb dialog box at work in my case Again this happens after a Windows Update or soemthing that screws up IE It just started a few days ago on my computer after i've had it for six months Changing file associations on the computer should have nothing to do with it as i'm referring to file management within IE not on the computer And again it's not all pictures returned in a Google image search just some and typically in blogs Can someone out there make it so that i can just click all images quickly determine if it's one i can use and be on my way without dialog boxes opening other computer programs etc You will be my hero this Christmas

First try re-downloading the internet explorer 8.0.

http://www.ie8optimized.com/MSN/?pkw...a=goa727edc441

This might help. If your just tired of internet explorer, or it doesn't work then try google chrome. Its much faster then internet explorer. you can even custimize the way your browser looks

http://www.google.com/chrome

I would use google chrome, but my mom hates it so i can't, google chrome is something people don't believe that its very fast, but it is, and less errors, so try it out now. I hope you get it working.

For years my dad has wanted a DVD with clips from our home videos on it. We have about twenty dvds packed with video and I wanted to edit those dvds to make a sort of "best of" movie. The thing is, my computer doesn't have a dvd drive but i'm not sure if that is needed. I was wondering if anyone could help by saying that there's either no way it will work without a dvd drive, or if i could just download some software that would enable me to make this dvd. If anyone could get back to me that would be soo awsome!
Thank a lot.
Sarah

I hope someone comes along and proves me wrong Sarah, but without a DVD writer on your computer or a stand alone DVD recorder I dont think its possible .....

With Christmas around the corner maybe it's a good time for "Christmas Avatar / Signature" type requests to be posted.
If anyone would like something along these lines please feel free to post your requests, and I'm sure that with all of the talent we have here we can sort something out

Well, I would like to request a vampire Santa avatar and sig.....call me unconventional if you will! (or just a bit odd)

Okay, here it is.

My artsy wife loves to make her own Christmas cards every year. She does a good job, but she gets me involved (which I don't want to be). This year, she wants a wallpaper background for Word in a Christmas style. She is looking to print a snowflake pattern on the outside of the card.

So I need a background. Does anyone know of a download Word?

A:Need a Christmas Background For Word

Since she's using Word just go to: http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/templategallery/ and look under stationary/for the holidays. They've got a pretty good selection.

You are now clean. Am I being hacked, I doubt it, will deal with that soon.A lot of programs, now give you the choice to install toolbars & other during the install. Either uncheck these items during install, or use Custom install. No more click, click during an install, you have to read after each click.I use Softpedia, down the bottom of the page, they make you aware what Ad-supported programs the author of the program has included.Sample pages http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD...First and foremost, extra attention needs to be paid during installation as ImgBurn offers to create desktop shortcuts to third-party apps, as well as install a browser toolbar onto the host computer, which are not required to ensure the smooth running of the app. SS of above.http://i.imgur.com/jgGYNsP.gifThis is what ImgBurn tries to install.http://i.imgur.com/ms4DzE9.gifhttp://i.imgur.com/vVkd39a.gifhttp://i.imgur.com/rqFVaHs.gifhttp://i.imgur.com/sm1T7h6.gifhttp://i.imgur.com/vhkKLYo.gifI did not run Debut Video Capture Software, down the bottom of the Sofdtpedia page it says this.Users are advised to pay attention while installing this ad-supported application: Offers to change the homepage for web browsers installed in the system Offers to change the default search engine for web browsers installed in the system Offers to download or install software or components (such as browser toolbars) that the program does not require to fully functionhttp://www.softpedia.com/get/Multim...Use Unchecky to help prevent these third party installs. Hi, Looking to buy a new beast laptop for Crimbo. I have been suggested pcspecialist.com and dell.

Anyone have any reccomendations? As I wanna get what I want. Value for money wise.

A:Laptop Christmas shopping

How much you want to spend?
If your in the USA you can have one custom made for your needs?
Or you can go to any club warehouse and buy the top of the line there.
Or you can just wait it out and see what's available this month.

Hello Anybody and Everybody,

I have a shiny new laptop.. It's an Acer 5542 with windows 7.

My old laptop is a Medion and it is conneted to the internet via wired broadband.

I am trying to get the new one on and am NOT succeeding.

I plugged the new one in and did all the set up bits then plugged the router in and expected it to work. (silly me !!)

I've had a look through my 'bits & bobs' box (the one with all those start up discs in that you hope you'll never have to use !! ) and found a disc that came with the broadband router... SO... I put it in (thinking I was now very clever ) but I got a message to say that it was not supported by windows 7

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR............ I need help (or therapy... or BOTH !! )

pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese .......... -x-

Hi AbsoluteAngel! Welcome to SevenForums!
Try putting the disc in to the drive and then going to Computer.
Right-Click the Disc in there and click explore.
Look for a setup file.
Follow this tutorial to run the program in Compatibility Mode for whichever OS it is compatible with.

Post back with your results.

Thanks,
ZeshanA

Bad Christmas! I shift delete last night’s pictures by mistake when I copy them from SD card to PC. They are Christmas eve’s pictures with my family. What a stupid action! Is there any chance to get them back? It seems that some softwares would be helpful, but which one would be better?

several problems
1-AVG remove and replace with Microsoft security essentials

AVG - Download tools

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

2- Your Iastor driver has caused most of these. Re-install it with newest version.

After these are fixed we can start to ID the true cause of the BSOD's.

But im kinda wondering my mobo accepts PCI Express x16 but whats 2.0?

A:Video Card for christmas

2.0 is the new generation of pci-e cards. I'm pretty sure they are backwards compatible with first gen .
Have to check specs to make sure it dose.

Christmas games installed for son (half life 2 and sims 2)..... realised PC graphics card is drawing it's pension.
Question: I have P4 2.6 with 256 ram with am ATI Radeon 32mb graphics card.
It says on the motherboard sheet that I have 4 PCI slots and an AGP slot (spec 2.0).
Please advise me as to what AGP graphic cards I can purchase for around £40-£80 which will work with the given AGP slot. I presume I cannot buy a graphics card that supports 4x and an 8x as the 'pins slots' are totally incompatable?
Anyway, given my basic specifications above, which ATI (some say go for min' 128mb) will run best and please send link for me to browse.
Thanks.
Paul.

A:Christmas 'Card' question

If my conversion is correct, and prices are about the same... the best you could get would be the Radeon 9600XT i think.

A:Need help cleaning up this log. please thanks merry christmas

Hey pyro.......this one's not too dirty.

=========

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download AboutBuster and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Do not run it yet.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download WinsockFix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

Download Hoster (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe) and run it. Choose the 'Restore Original Hosts' button and press OK.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Viewpoint

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

Run AboutBuster and follow the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Probably preaching to the well aware with this audience, but...

Just bought a first laptop for my daughter for Christmas. Set it up a couple of days ago with the usual wait whilst Windows did its thing. Set up children's account etc -all was well.
Started it this morning just to check on the privacy settings and Windows dropped the 1511 update. This took 4 hours from start to end.

If that had been Christmas day I would have had a very disappointed daughter, waiting to use her new PC.

I will check again on Christmas eve for further updates before wrapping it up..

I've really been holding out replacing my printer, but apparently my HP 2000C realises it's Christmas and all of the lights are flashing, that is 2 green and red. Does anyone know what the problem might be? How do I go about fixing it?

Thanks.

Does this mean anything special i.e. does the manual say anything under troubleshooting. Unpluging from the mains for a short time sometimes cures electronic blips. Has the carriage possibly jammed?

I must have been bad this year! My daughter tried to install Spore this morning on our HP Pavillion desktop running Windows XP. The computer now locks up after booting with an Antivirus 2009 screen that says it is scanning. I can't even clt-alt-del, I have to turn the power off. Needless to say I can't even get to Hijack This to run it.

Should I boot up in safe mode? I scared to do anything, for fear of making things worse. I always rely on you guys for advice, you are awesome.

There has been much confusion about the Windows Desktop because the computer and software industries have an unfortunate tendency to call many things by the same name instead of making up a different name for each thing This post will eliminate all that confusion Or else it will double the confusion -- Desktops of Twelve The Christmas I'm The Twelve Desktops of Christmas not sure which Naturally I just couldn't resist using this post title but it's a dastardly lie because actually there are not merely but Desktops The Desktop GUI that is the display of icons that you see in Desktop mode when there are no windows in the way The quot Show Desktop quot icon which minimizes all windows so you can see your whole Desktop It's in the folder quot C Users The Twelve Desktops of Christmas Default AppData Roaming Microsoft Internet Explorer Quick Launch quot and is a quot virtual quot shortcut with no target address like the system's built-in shortcuts for Computer Control Panel The Twelve Desktops of Christmas Recycle Bin and the quot Window Switcher quot The OTHER quot Show Desktop quot icon which does the same thing but looks like a File Explorer icon It's in the folder quot C Users UserName AppData Local Microsoft Windows WinX Group quot and uses a CLSID see item below The Show Desktop quot Non-Icon quot which can be clicked at the lower right corner of the screen but doesn't look or behave like an icon in general The User Desktop folder in your User folder which controls the contents of your Desktop GUI Display The Treetop folder as I call it -- a quot virtual quot folder which is the top of File Explorer's quot tree quot of folders It has the Desktop's contents plus the quot default quot Desktop items like Libraries Computer Control Panel Network Homegroup Recycle Bin and your User folder The Shortcut to the User Desktop folder There's none in the system that I know of but you can create one if you like See under next item The Shortcut to the Treetop folder It's in the quot Favorites quot folder -- not the one inside your user folder but the File Explorer Favorites folder shown at the top of the Navigation Pane Note Strangely that shortcut's target address appears as quot C Users UserName Desktop quot which is actually the address of the User Desktop folder And even more strangely if you make a shortcut to quot C Users UserName Desktop quot using the Create Shortcut Wizard that one will open the Treetop folder too You can use the Wizard to make a shortcut to the User Desktop folder but only by typing quot explorer C Users UserName Desktop quot as the target Something ever more weird Open a File Explorer window and click the first appearance of your UserName folder in the Navigation Pane right near the top Then open another window and find quot Computer quot further down in the Pane and navigate from there to Computers gt C gt Users gt UserName Now you see your User folder in both windows they look identical Each one contains an icon called quot Desktop quot and naturally they both go to the User Desktop folder -- the one that's in the folder you're looking at But now in the first quot User quot window right-click the quot Desktop quot folder icon shown there and select quot Create Shortcut quot The resulting shortcut icon will of course appear in both windows since the same folder is being displayed in both Then do the same thing in the second window and a second shortcut will appear in both windows But the two shortcuts are different The first one appears as a folder icon and opens the User Desktop folder the second one looks like the Show Desktop icon and it opens the Treetop folder Here's the quot tree of folders quot as shown in the Navigation Pane Favorites gt Desktop gt Downloads gt Recent Places Desktop gt Libraries gt Homegroup gt UserName gt gt Desktop gt Computer gt gt Drive C gt gt gt Program Files gt gt gt Program Data gt gt gt Users gt gt gt gt Default gt gt gt gt Public gt gt gt gt UserName gt gt gt gt gt Desktop gt g... Dear friends:

My PC (Windows XP Professional NT/XP) despite the Easycleaner and SpyBot Search & Destroy anti virus, was hit by a very strange virus that does not permit me to open Windows. While it was still running I deleted what I thought was malware by the name of "WinLogon".

1. When I turn on the PC, it makes all the usual noises prior to start-up, opens the window to start session an immediately afterwards closes it.

2. No time or chance to go to system recovery.

3. Mouse useless.

I would trulyappreciate your kind assistance.

Best regards,

Has anyone bought a Surface for their kids? The SP3 is a little out of my price range. Would appreciate any experienced suggestions from parents..

She plays a few online games like Animal Jam, Club Penguin, and Roblox. She currently has a laptop but always seems to get adware, hijackers, and other nonsense.. Is the surface just as prone to all that?

Thanks..

A:Surface for my 10 yr old daughter for Christmas.

The adware, highjackers, etc. is not a problem of the device but a problem of the setup and the usage. Get a good AV program (at least MSE) and this program for the adware.

AdwCleaner Download

With any other Windows device including a Surface you will have the same problem. For a kid I would suggest to look into an Android device (e.g. a Nexus 7 or 10). Unlikely you get those kinds of problems with Android plus there are a lot more Android kids games (from the Google playstore) then for Windows.

Btw - if you are talking about the cheap Surface - that is a RISC machine. Windows x86 programs do not run on it. x86 is the architecture for windows PCs and laptops. So the programs the kid is running on the laptop will not run on that Surface.

Hey im new here and want your opinions on the hardware I have chosen for the build I will be doing for Christmas

MB: Asus Sabertooth X58

CPU: Intel i7 930

Memory: Patriot Viper II 6GB 1600MHz CAS 8-8-8-24

Cooler: Noctua NH-D14

i already have a Antec 900 a 650w power supply and a GTX 260 i was hoping to either add a second 260 or wait for the GTX 570's and grab 2 of them

what do you guys think overall, any suggestions?

And thanks

A:Thinking about overhauling my PC for Christmas

If you are going to add a second graphics card, the 650W power supply might be sufficient, depending on its quality, but most 650W PSUs would be marginal. Although I'm sure nVidia is conservative in their recommendations, see this list for some guidance: http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html. IMO you should upgrade your power supply accordingly.

I have a tb Freeagent that got from my father back in June Its worked absolutely fine since then but ever since last night it hasn t worked a single bit The last thing I was doing was copying some files and then kaputz I have checked many forums At first I could see it come up in My Computer every once in a while frequently more like it it gave me the dreaded message You must format this hard drive Foolishly I didn t as it is my only back up drive with everything I have ever had on it since last year By the way it had been Christmas... Not failure? on drive external clicking on and off but before the Not on Christmas... external drive failure? light could completely turn off it restarts Because of that I cannot or could not copy back up or even format the damn thing at all I thought by going to sleep I would wake up on Christmas morning and everything would be okay It got worse Now I can t see it in My Computer it doesn t show up as a random drive Local Disk J for instance instead of Freeagent Drive G and it clicks on and off and does squat When I plug it in everything that I could use for it freezes until I unplug it even the safely remove hardware thing It doesn t show up in Disk Management and device manager says that nothing is wrong but when I right click on it it freezes just like everything else I didn t droop it or anything either I unplugged it for something else and lo and behold chaos ensued PS I have tried it on five computers three different cables two AC power cords four different outlets three different ports and unplugging everything but the AC cord in hopes that it wasn t receiving enough power I am not good with computer speak seeing as I m in high school so please take it easy on me Any help would be appreciated Even if its quot It s dead Jim quot nbsp

A:Not on Christmas... external drive failure?

...and it clicks on and off and does squat.Click to expand...

Sounds to me like the external drive might be kaput, sorry.

If the drive is still under warranty you can most likely send it back to the manufacturer and they will replace/repair the drive and recover your data for free.

If not, you can try to recover the data yourself but this will almost definitely void the warranty and the process can be fairly complicated.

Hope this helps.

PS: Many times manufacturers will replace your faulty device even if it is not covered by a warranty. Make sure to ask them before you attempt any repairs yourself if you aren't confident.

A:Over 800 outbound connections. Merry Christmas

hi,

Your seeing these connections via COMODOs firewall?  There all established connections? What about when you try using Internet Explorer?

Get a copy of this and post the log as a starting point:

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system, download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Right-click FRST then click "Run as administrator" (XP users: click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    Press the Scan button.
When finished, it will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool was run from.
Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.

The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory the tool was run from). Please also paste that, along with the FRST.txt into your next reply.
